Tonic immobility (TI), also known as animal hypnosis, has been observed in a wide variety of taxa and reported in all vertebrate classes with the exception of Agnatha. To date, TI has been reported in six species of elasmobranchs. Preliminary results are presented here for five species of galeomorph sharks, one species of squalomorph shark, and six species of batoids. Tonic immobility was induced in the leopard shark. Triakis semifasciata; the whitetip reef shark, Triaenodon obesus; the blacktip reef shark, Carcharhinus melanopterus; the Caribbean reef shark, Carcharhinus perezi; the swellshark, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum; the California round ray, Urolophus halleri; the shovelnose guitarfish, Rhinobatos productus; the clearnose skate. Raja eglanteria; the cownose ray, Rhinoptera bonasus; and the southern stingray, Dasyatis americana. The broadnose sevengill shark, Notorynchus cepedianus and the yellow stingray, Urolophus jamaicensis failed to exhibit the tonic immobility response, but only one individual of each species was tested. The average induction time ranged from 16.7 sec in the shovelnose guitarfish to 45.7 sec in the clearnose skate. Average duration times ranged from 34.3 sec in the clearnose skate to 274.0 sec in the Caribbean reef shark. Depending upon the species involved, TI has been used as an aid in a few husbandry and medical procedures in captive elasmobranches at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. These procedures have included gross examination, measuring lengths, tube feeding, and drawing blood via caudal venipuncture. Using tonic immobility during these procedures is beneficial as once induced, the subject's struggling is minimal and usually requires little restraint. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Tonic immobility and escape are adaptive anti-predator tactics used by many animals. Escape requires movement, whereas tonic immobility does not. If anti-predator tactics relate to weapon size, males with larger weapons may adopt tonic immobility, whereas males with smaller weapons may adopt escape. However, no study has investigated the relationship between weapon size and anti-predator tactics. In this study, we investigated the relationship between male weapon size and tonic immobility in the beetle Gnathocerus cornutus. The results showed that tonic immobility was more frequent in males with larger weapons. Although most studies of tonic immobility in beetles have focused on the duration, rather than the frequency, tonic immobility duration was not affected by weapon size in G. cornutus. Therefore, this study is the first, to our knowledge, to suggest that the male weapon trait affects anti-predator tactics.  相似文献

Tonic immobility and several accompanying behavioral changes were examined in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus). It was found that either the occurrence of a loud noise immediately before induction or the presence of a stuffed Cooper's hawk increased the duration of immobility in some subjects. Subspecies differences in durations of immobility were also found. The number of inductions required to produce immobility in squirrel monkeys were unusually large, and were negatively correlated with duration of the response. Behavioral variables accompanying tonic immobility showed qualitative differences when compared to what is known concerning their relation to immobility in other species. The findings support the belief that tonic immobility evolved as a predator defense in squirrel monkeys or one of their ancestors, but suggest that it no longer plays an active role in their survival.  相似文献

Salmon sharks, Lamna ditropis, belong to a small group of sharks that possess vascular counter-current heat exchangers (retia mirabilia) allowing retention of metabolically generated heat, resulting in elevated body temperatures. The capacity of free-swimming lamnid sharks to regulate rates of heat gain and loss has not been demonstrated. Using acoustic telemetry, we recorded swimming depth and stomach temperature from four free-swimming salmon sharks in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Temperature data were obtained over time periods ranging from 3.8 to 20.7 h. Temperature profiles of the water column were obtained concurrently for use as estimates of ambient temperature. Mean stomach temperature among four individuals tracked ranged from 25.0 to 25.7°C. These sharks defended specific elevated temperatures regardless of changes in ambient temperature, which ranged from about 5–16°C. The maximum observed elevation of stomach temperature over ambient was 21.2°C. Because stomach temperatures were so strictly maintained relative to changes in ambient temperature, a thermal rate coefficient, k, (°C min–1 °C thermal gradient–1) for cooling of 0.053 min–1 was obtained via a `control' experiment with a dead salmon shark. We show that free-swimming adult salmon sharks maintain a specific stomach temperature independent of changes in ambient temperature through a combination of physical and physiological means, and essentially function as homeotherms. This unique ability is probably the underlying factor in the evolutionary niche expansion of salmon sharks into boreal waters and in their ability to actively pursue and capture highly active prey such as salmon.  相似文献

Fishing is the major threat to marine fish populations, particularly to higher trophic-level predators such as sharks. Many sharks, and other fish, are caught as commercial by-catch or for recreational purposes and then released; therefore, it is important to understand the effects of capture stress on their physiology and subsequent survival. Nonetheless, although important data have been collected for some sharks, there can be substantial interspecific differences, and the consequences of capture stress are still poorly understood for most species. In this study, the authors quantified the physiological effect of capture on four catshark species endemic to Southern Africa, which are regularly discarded as by-catch and targeted by recreational fisheries. Fifteen pyjama sharks, nine leopard sharks and nine shysharks were captured, and a blood sample was collected to measure their physiological response to capture stress. Stressed blood biochemistry was compared to samples obtained after the sharks recovered for 24 h in an underwater pen. Levels of pH and K+ were significantly lower, and lactate levels were significantly higher, in sharks immediately after capture stress compared to after the 24 h recovery period. Although the species showed a similar response to capture stress, they differed significantly in pH, K+ and lactate levels, and there was some evidence of size affecting the strength of the response to capture stress. The substantial physiological response elicited by even the relatively quick capture event in this study suggests that common fishing practices will have a stronger impact on catshark homeostasis because of longer hooking times and more disruptive fishing gear. Although the relationship between survival and physiological changes elicited by capture needs further investigation, the results provide further evidence that minimizing stress would be beneficial to maximize the survival of sharks and other fish following capture-and-release fishing practices.  相似文献

Forty-eight college students were assigned randomly to four groups in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of phasic conditional stimuli (same vs. different) and tonic conditional stimuli (same vs. different) to receive 2 days of classical conditioning with a transswitching procedure. Tonic stimuli were a 5-minute projected white triangle or circle; phasic stimuli were a 5-second red or green square superimposed over the tonic stimuli. There were six tonic stimulus segments each day, separated by 20-second periods of no stimulus, three containing six trials of the phasic stimulus paired with shock and three containing six trials of the phasic stimulus alone, in the counterbalanced order. Tonic responding at the onset of the tonic stimuli or during brief periods following its onset were recorded, along with phasic responses to the phasic stimuli. Responses included magnitude of skin conductance responses, frequency of unelicited skin conductance responses, and tonic heart rate. Both skin conductance measures of responding to the tonic stimuli differentiated significantly between positive and negative tonic segments during Day 2, but only in the group with two different tonic stimuli and one phasic stimulus ("standard" transswitching). This supported the hypothesis that tonic stimulus differentiation would be absent when two different phasic stimuli were present. The heart rate data did not support this hypothesis, showing tonic differentiation in both groups with two tonic stimuli. Phasic differentiation controlled by the different phasic stimuli was observed on Day 1; on Day 2, phasic differentiation was present only in the group with two tonic and one phasic stimuli and the group with one tonic and two phasic stimuli.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Biogenic amines, caffeine and tonic immobility in Tribolium castaneum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Biogenic amines are physiologically neuroactive substances that affect behavioural and physiological traits in invertebrates. In the present study, the effects of dopamine, octopamine, tyramine and serotonin on tonic immobility, or death-feigning, were investigated in Tribolium castaneum. These amines were injected into the abdomens of beetles artificially selected for long or short duration of tonic immobility. In beetles of the long strains, the durations of tonic immobility were shortened by injection of dopamine, octopamine and tyramine, and the effects of these amines were dose-dependent. On the other hand, serotonin injection did not affect the duration of tonic immobility. In the short-strain beetles that rarely feign death, no significant effects of the amines were found on the duration of tonic immobility. Brain expression levels of octopamine, tyramine and serotonin did not differ between long- and short-strain beetles, in contrast to the higher dopamine levels in short strains previously reported. Caffeine decreased the duration of death-feigning in both oral absorption and injection experiments. It is known that caffeine activates dopamine. Therefore, the present results suggest that the duration of tonic immobility is affected by dopamine via the dopamine receptor in T. castaneum.  相似文献

Factorial correspondence analysis was performed on 341 quails from a F2 cross between two lines divergently selected on the duration of tonic immobility over 29 generations. Several fear- or stress-related traits were recorded, i.e. tonic immobility duration, number of inductions needed to induce tonic immobility, open-field behaviour (time spent walking, latency before first movement and number of defecations), asymmetry of tibia lengths and corticosterone concentration after restraint stress. Variables were categorised in classes and analysed by factorial correspondence analysis. The first axis was mostly described by open-field behaviour, and the second by tonic immobility traits (duration of tonic immobility and number of inductions), which showed that these behaviours were almost independent. No relationship was found between axes of the factorial correspondence analysis and corticosterone concentration or asymmetry of tibia lengths, showing that these variables reflected other characteristics of stress susceptibility than those described by tonic immobility and open-field behaviour. These results show that reaction to stress of quails is a multidimensional trait and cannot be summarised by one trait.  相似文献

Longline fishing is the most common elasmobranch capture method around the world, yet the physiological consequences of this technique are poorly understood. To quantify the sub-lethal effects of longline capture in the commonly exploited Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus perezi), 37 individuals were captured using standard, mid-water longlines. Hook timers provided hooking duration to the nearest minute. Once sharks were landed, blood samples were taken and used to measure a suite of physiological parameters. Control data were obtained by sampling an additional three unrestrained Caribbean reef sharks underwater at an established shark feeding site. The greatest level of physiological disruption occurred after 120-180min of hooking, whereas sharks exposed to minimal and maximal hook durations exhibited the least disturbed blood chemistry. Significant relationships were established between hooking duration and blood pH, pCO(2), lactate, glucose, plasma calcium and plasma potassium. Longline capture appears more benign than other methods assessed to date, causing a shift in the stress response from acute at the onset of capture to a sub-acute regime as the capture event progresses, apparently facilitating a degree of physiological recovery. Continued investigation into the physiological response of elasmobranchs to longline capture is vital for the effective management of such fisheries.  相似文献

Many sharks are captured as untargeted by-catch during commercial fishing operations and are subsequently discarded. A reliable assessment of the proportion of discarded sharks that die post-release as a result of excessive physiological stress is important for fisheries management and conservation purposes, but a reliable physiological predictor of post-release mortality has not been identified. To investigate effects of gill-net capture on the acid-base balance of sharks, we exposed gummy sharks, Mustelus antarcticus, to 60 min of gill-net capture in a controlled setting, and obtained multiple blood and muscle tissue samples during a 72-h recovery period following the capture event. Overall mortality of gummy sharks was low (9%). Blood pH was significantly depressed immediately after the capture event due to a combination of respiratory and metabolic acidosis. Maximum concentrations of plasma lactate (9.9 ± 1.5 mmol L(-1)) were measured 3h after the capture event. Maximum intramuscular lactate concentrations (37.0 ± 4.6 μmol g(-1)) were measured immediately after the capture event, and intramuscular lactate concentrations were substantially higher than plasma lactate concentrations at all times. Sharks in poor condition had low blood pH and high intramuscular lactate concentration, but blood pH does not appear to be a reliable predictor of survival. Suitability of intramuscular lactate concentration as predictor of delayed mortality deserves further investigation.  相似文献

Tiger sharks, Galeocerdo cuvier, are apex predators that may structure marine communities through predation. Despite a large number of studies in other areas such as the Pacific Ocean, there are no quantitative data on the diet of tiger sharks in the northwest Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Diet was assessed from 169 tiger sharks by life stage, area, and environmental factors. Fifteen prey groups were identified, with teleosts, molluscs, birds, cephalopods, and reptiles being the predominant prey categories. There was an ontogenetic shift in diet, prey size and diversity. Molluscs were the most common prey in smaller sharks, while teleosts and reptiles became more important in the diet of larger sharks. Dietary overlap was significant by area (Gulf of Mexico vs Atlantic Ocean) and among all life stages except for young-of-the-year and adult tiger sharks. Juvenile tiger sharks also demonstrated selective feeding by targeting gastropod feet over ingesting the entire animal. While results were similar to feeding studies conducted on tiger sharks in other ocean basins, an understanding of area-specific trophic interactions is necessary to inform decision support tools for ecosystem-based approaches to management.  相似文献

Serum corticosterone was previously studied in numerous elasmobranch fishes (sharks, skates and rays), but the role of this steroid, widespread throughout many taxa, has yet to be defined. The goal of this study was to test whether corticosterone varied in response to acute and chronic capture stress, and across the reproductive cycle in the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, and Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina. Serum corticosterone in S. tiburo increased following capture and again 24 h post-capture, possibly caused by interference with 1α-hydroxycorticosterone, the primary stress hormone in elasmobranchs. Higher serum concentrations in males compared to females were observed in both species. Variations in corticosterone also occurred during the reproductive cycle in both species. Consistent with other taxa, elevations in male bonnethead sharks and stingrays coincided with peak testicular development and mating. Elevations in female bonnethead sharks occurred from the time of mating through sperm storage into early gestation. In contrast, corticosterone levels in female stingrays were low during their protracted mating season, but elevated through late gestation and parturition. These results indicate that corticosterone has a limited role, if any, in acute and chronic stress associated with capture in S. tiburo, but likely has physiological functions associated with its glucocorticoid properties across the reproductive cycle of both species.  相似文献

Tonic immobility was induced in adult laying hens using different methods and substrates, factors which have shown great variety of response in previous work. The fact that topic immobility was induced in every situation confirms the robust nature of this phenomenon. Placing hens on their backs and restraining them in a U-shaped wooden cradle covered with cloth was the most reliable and consistent method. Not only was the duration of response greatest when this method was used, but less handling, with its possible stressful effects, was required to induce it. There were no significant differences in the latency to the first head movement or in the duration of immobility between adolescent ‘T’ (Rhode Island Red × Light Sussex) and ‘S’ (White Leghorn) lines but both these characteristics were considerably shorter in the ‘J’ line birds (Brown Leghorn). There were no significant sex differences in the duration of tonic immobility but male ‘T’ and ‘S’ line birds showed greater latencies to the first head movement and fewer subsequent alert head movements than females. These results are discussed in terms of sex and strain differences in fearfulness.The varied nomenclature used to describe the immobility reaction is discussed and an alternative term “righting time” is proposed. It is further suggested that the immobility response consists of an inhibitory and an alert stage.  相似文献

Many insects show a typical antipredator behavior. The two simplest tactics are immobilization and flight. The antipredator behavior of wireworms, the soil-dwelling polyphagous larvae of click beetles, has not yet been investigated. Birds are known to attack wireworms. Our experimental method (picking up and dropping wireworms) mimics the first attack of a predator, such as a bird. In Europe, some Agriotes species are of particular importance as crop pests. As these species differ considerably, in ecology, damage threshold, and pathogen resistance, knowing more about the species specific biology and behavior will support the establishment of successful control measures. In an extensive microcosm study, we observed the antipredator behavior of wireworms belonging to four different Agriotes species (A. lineatus, A. obscurus, A. sordidus, and A. ustulatus) before and during digging into the soil after a startle-stimulus. We recorded wireworm immobility frequency and duration, and locomotor activity at three temperatures. We also analyzed genetic and morphologic attributes of A. lineatus larvae from two different origins. Following behavior types were found reflecting different escape tactics: (a) distinct tonic immobility (A. lineatus), (b) brief/inconsistent tonic immobility (A. obscurus, A. sordidus), and (c) immediate fleeing/burying (A. ustulatus). Additionally, we found small but significant differences in morphology, behavior, and genetics (PCR results) between A. lineatus larvae originating from the Netherlands and those originating from Germany. The biological information we gathered about each species will further increase the understanding of these insects and improve interpretation of future experimental data. In addition, the described behavioral differences between Agriotes obscurus and A. lineatus wireworms may represent a useful additional criterion in morphological species identification.  相似文献

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activates synaptic GABA(A) receptors to generate inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. GABA also acts on extrasynaptic GABA(A) receptors, resulting in tonic inhibition. The physiological role of tonic inhibition, however, remains elusive. We explored the neurophysiological significance of tonic inhibition by testing whether selective activation of extrasynaptic GABA(A) receptors is sufficient to curb excitotoxicity. Tonic inhibition was selectively enhanced by increasing ambient GABA. In both acute hippocampal slices and cultured hippocampal neurons, boosting tonic inhibition alone is insufficient to withstand the hyper-excitability of hippocampal neurons induced by low-magnesium (Mg2+) baths. Furthermore, selective activation of extrasynaptic GABA(A) receptors resulted in no significant neuroprotective effects against glutamate or low-Mg2+-induced neuronal cell deaths. These data imply that under physiological conditions extrasynaptic GABA(A) receptors are optimally activated by ambient GABA and that a further increase in extracellular GABA concentration will not significantly enhance the effect of tonic inhibition on neuronal excitability.  相似文献

We evaluated individual behavioural patterns of isopods expressed as tonic immobility following some intrusive treatments. Common rough woodlice, Porcellio scaber, were kept individually in plastic boxes and tested for tonic immobility repeatedly. Reactivity, sensitivity (number of stimuli needed to respond), and endurance of tonic immobility (TI) according three types of treatments (touch, squeeze, drop) were evaluated. Touch was the weakest treatment and it was necessary to repeat it a number of times to obtain a response; while squeeze and drop induced TI more frequently. Nevertheless, duration of the response persisted for a longer time with the touch treatment. Within each set of the three treatment, the strongest response was the third one, regardless of treatment type. Duration of reaction was affected by the size of the woodlouse, the smallest individuals feigning death for the shortest time. Despite body size, we found a significant individual pattern of endurance of TI among tested woodlice, which was stable across treatments as well as across time (5 repetitions during a 3 week period). Knowing how often animals engage in different behaviors and their energetic costs may explain why animals behave the way they do in the wild. This study sought to investigate the relationship between the frequency of various swimming behaviors and their associated energetic costs (oxygen consumption rates) in situ for juvenile lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris). Behaviors were identified for captive animals and remotely observed for animals in the wild with accelerometers, and oxygen consumption rates of behaviors were estimated using acceleration-calibrated relationships. Lemon sharks rested infrequently (4.3% of deployment), and the occurrence of active swimming behaviors was inversely related to their respective oxygen consumption rates. Furthermore, time of day and tide state influenced when lemon sharks exhibited active swimming behaviors – but not resting – such that sharks were most active during the day on flooding tides. Oxygen consumption rates also differed across and within different behaviors with time of day and tide state, although mean oxygen consumption rates were highest on daytime flooding tides and uniformly reduced across all other diel and tide combinations. Despite variation in oxygen consumption rates, however, lemon shark activity occurred at 32.3–35.6% of their aerobic metabolic scope. These data do not provide a clear oxygen consumption basis for swimming behaviors observed in situ, which may have been masked by potentially stronger ecological drivers (e.g., predator-prey dynamics). However, these data are relevant to linking behavioral modifications to changes in energy use that shows much promise for addressing conservation issues in fishes.  相似文献

Synopsis We compared growth rates of the lemon shark, Negaprion brevirostris, from Bimini, Bahamas and the Marquesas Keys (MK), Florida using data obtained in a multi-year annual census. We marked new neonate and juvenile sharks with unique electronic identity tags in Bimini and in the MK we tagged neonate and juvenile sharks. Sharks were tagged with tiny, subcutaneous transponders, a type of tagging thought to cause little, if any disruption to normal growth patterns when compared to conventional external tagging. Within the first 2 years of this project, no age data were recorded for sharks caught for the first time in Bimini. Therefore, we applied and tested two methods of age analysis: (1) a modified minimum convex polygon method and (2) a new age-assigning method, the cut-off technique. The cut-off technique proved to be the more suitable one, enabling us to identify the age of 134 of the 642 previously unknown aged sharks. This maximised the usable growth data included in our analysis. Annual absolute growth rates of juvenile, nursery-bound lemon sharks were almost constant for the two Bimini nurseries and can be best described by a simple linear model (growth data was only available for age-0 sharks in the MK). Annual absolute growth for age-0 sharks was much greater in the MK than in either the North Sound (NS) and Shark Land (SL) at Bimini. Growth of SL sharks was significantly faster during the first 2 years of life than of the sharks in the NS population. However, in MK, only growth in the first year was considered to be reliably estimated due to low recapture rates. The bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) is a widely distributed species found in tropical and temperate waters of every ocean, yet we know relatively little about their basic biology including their life history and population structure. From 2003–2007, we collected over 300 biopsy samples from sixgills during research operations in Puget Sound, WA, USA. Genotypic data using ten polymorphic microsatellites were used to describe sixgill genetic diversity, relatedness and mating pattern. Diversity within sixgills was found to be moderate with an average observed heterozygosity of 0.45, an average expected heterozygosity of 0.61, an average of 12 alleles per locus, and an average allelic richness of eight within microsatellite loci. Our data suggests all of the sampled individuals come from one intermixing population, and we found no historical evidence of significant population bottlenecks. Many of the sharks were sampled using longline techniques with several sharks captured at the same time and place. Similarly, multiple sharks were sampled on several occasions during research events at the Seattle Aquarium. The proportion of individuals that were full- or half-siblings was high among sharks sampled at the same time and place (range 0.65–0.87). Analysis of the genetic relationship between one large female washed ashore and 71 of her near-term pups suggested a polyandrous mating system with as many as nine males contributing to her offspring. This study is the first to investigate genetic diversity, relatedness and paternity within sixgill sharks and sheds light on important conservation implications for this little known shark population.  相似文献
