Fifty-three adult female and 51 adult male white-tailed rats (Mystromys albicaudatus) were killed with ether and weighed; the spleen, kidneys, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, brain and gonads were dissected free of adhering tissue and weighted. The mean absolute organ weight and organ:body weight ratios by sex and organ were calculated and compared. The male rats were significantly (p less than or equal to 0.05) heavier. The mean weight of the males was 110.0 +/- 23.8 g versus 82.9 +/- 16.1 g for the females. The absolute weights of the heart, liver and kidneys were significantly (p less than or equal to 0.05) greater for the males. The organ:body weight ratios, except for heart and brain (excluding ovary and testicle), were unaffected by sex. The heart to body weight ratio and the brain to body weight ratio were significantly (p less than or equal to 0.05) larger in female rats.  相似文献

The activity of antiviral nucleoside analogues like acyclovir is influenced by a number of cellular factors, one being the deoxythymidine (dThd) concentration. We therefore analysed the dThd concentration in human plasma and skin and in organs of guinea pig, the common experimental animal. High-performance liquid chromatography showed low amounts of dThd in human skin, 0.20-1.15 nmol/g, whereas guinea pig skin and spleen had 20-30 nmol/g and the concentration in guinea pig plasma was 10-times higher than in human plasma. These animals are therefore in this respect less suitable as accurate models for antiviral nucleoside activity in humans.  相似文献

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has been reported to relax, in a concentration-dependent manner, cholecystokinin-induced tension in guinea pig gallbladder strips. It is now shown that this CGRP-induced relaxation is body weight dependent with the degree of relaxation inversely related to weight. Radioimmunoassay demonstrated that the amount of CGRP in the gallbladder increased with body weight. Receptor binding showed that the number of binding sites and the affinity of the receptor decreased with increasing body weight. CGRP may play a role in the normal pattern of gallbladder contraction and relaxation. Decreased motility, even between periods of complete emptying, has been demonstrated to have a role in gallbladder diseases. The decreased sensitivity of the gallbladder to CGRP may explain the increase in abnormalities with age.  相似文献

We present the first cross-sectional organ weight by body weight reference standards for captive baboons (Papio hamadryas). Organ weight data were obtained from necropsy reports for 634 healthy, pedigreed, captive female and male baboons. From summary statistics we calculated and fit cross-sectional sex-specific percentile curves for: adrenals, brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, liver plus gall bladder, lungs, pancreas, pituitary gland, spleen, and thyroid gland in three kilogram body weight intervals and cross-sectional summary statistics by sex for each organ in one kilogram body weight intervals.  相似文献

Summary Early post mortem changes in the Organ of Corti are described. 15 minutes after death, when kept at room temperature, 20° C (63° F), an oedematous swelling is observed within the cytoplasm of hair cells and nerve endings, the latter being more severe affected. After 30 minutes post mortem the mitochondria of the hair cells have also become significantly swollen. Three hours post mortem the general character of the hair cells is still recognizable, but most of the nerve endings have been completely destroyed. Acknowledgement. We demonstrated the localization of metallothionein (MT) in rat uterus and ovaries and in guinea pig mammary glands. During the cyclic changes from one estrous period to the next, strong MT immunostaining was found in the glandular epithelium of the endometrium and weak immunostaining was observed in the simple columnar epithelium. Interestingly, during estrus, the intensity of MT immunostaining decreased in the cytoplasm, whereas during metestrus, diestrus, and proestrus the intensity of strong and similar immunostaining was observed in both the cytoplasm and nucleus. During proestrus and estrus, the number of vaginal epithelial cells containing MT increased on the luminal side of the epithelium and inside the lumen. In rat ovary, strong immunostaining was observed in the cytoplasm and nucleus of granulosa-lutein cells of the corpus luteum and in the cytoplasm of the ovum. In mammary gland of non-pregnant guinea pig, very strong but scattered MT immunostaining was demonstrated in both cytoplasm and nucleus of some epithelial cells of the lactiferous ducts. The mammary tissue of the pregnant guinea pig showed an increase in MT staining in alveolar cells that had proliferated due to pregnancy. The presence of MT in the female reproductive organs, the tissues of which actively grow under the control of female sex hormones, indicates some as yet unknown association of MT with cell proliferation and differentiation.  相似文献
