Recent studies of taste receptors in Drosophila show remarkable parallels with the mammalian gustatory system, although the pathways are anatomically distinct. These parallels may reflect crucial constraints in the design of taste detection systems.  相似文献

Models are useful when studying how architectural and physiological properties of muscle-tendon complexes are related to function, because they allow for the simulation of the behaviour of such complexes during natural movements. In the construction of these models, evaluation of their accuracy is an important step. In the present study, a model was constructed to calculate the isometric force-length relationship of the rat extensor digitorum longus muscle-tendon complex. The model is based on the assumption that a muscle-tendon complex is a collection of independent units, each consisting of a muscle fibre in series with a tendon fibre. By intention, values for model parameters were derived indirectly, using only the measured maximal isometric tetanic force, the distance between origin and insertion at which it occurred (optimum lOI) and an estimate of muscle fibre optimal length. The accuracy of the calculated force-length relationship was subsequently evaluated by comparing it to the relationship measured in isometric tetanic contractions of a real complex in the rat. When the length of distal muscle fibres, measured during isometric contraction at optimal lOI of the whole complex, was used as an estimate for muscle fibre optimal length of all muscle fibre-tendon fibre units in the model, the calculated relationship was too narrow. That is, both on the ascending limb and on the descending limb the calculated tetanic force was lower than the measured tetanic force.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Recent work on the identification and perception of fricatives has focussed on the use by listeners of spectral moments derived from the whole spectrum and there appears to be no work in the literature on the use of prominent spectral peaks. In this study, we map the response of a single listener to narrow bands of noise that "mimic" the spectral peaks of English voiceless fricatives. The stimuli are based on the critical-band rate scale (Zwicker and Fastl, 1990) which divides the audible frequency range up to 15,500 Hz into 24 abutting critical bands. The results suggest that listeners have knowledge that enables them to connect a narrow-band spectral peak with a particular fricative consonant. We demonstrate that such knowledge, particularly in conjunction with a normalization metric that takes account of an individual speaker's vocal tract characteristics (F0 of the vowel following the fricative), could be used to good effect, particularly in noisy conditions which impair the use of the whole spectrum.  相似文献

Isokinetic plantar flexion: experimental results and model calculations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In isokinetic experiments on human subjects, conducted to determine moments that can be exerted about a joint at different angular velocities, joint rotation starts as soon as the moment increases above the resting level. This contraction history differs from the one in experiments on isolated muscle, where the force is allowed to increase to an isometric level before shortening is initiated. The purpose of the present study was to determine the influence of contraction history on plantar flexing moments found during maximal voluntary plantar flexion on an isokinetic dynamometer. In ten subjects, plantar flexing moments were measured as a function of ankle angle at different angular velocities. They were also calculated using a model of the muscle-tendon complex of the human triceps surae. The model incorporates elastic tendinous tissue in series with muscle fibers. The input of the model consists of time histories of active state (the force generating capacity of contractile elements) and shortening velocity of the muscle-tendon complex. Different time courses of active state were offered at fixed length of the muscle-tendon complex. The time course yielding a close match between the calculated rise of plantar flexing moment and the rise measured during fixed angle contractions was used to calculate moment-angle curves for isokinetic plantar flexion. The active state value reached when a peak occurred in calculated moment-angle curves was found to be lower if the angular velocity was made higher. Comparing measured and calculated results, it was concluded that moment-angular velocity diagrams determined in studies of isokinetic plantar flexion in human subjects reflect not only the influence of shortening velocity of contractile elements on the force which can be produced by plantar flexors.  相似文献

Algal biomass during colonization of polyurethane foam islands (5.1 cm × 7.6 cm × 7.6 cm) was approximated by measuring chlorophyll a levels on islands after exposure periods of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 weeks at six locations in a small lake in central Tennessee, USA. Chlorophyll, ash-free dry weight, and concurrent environmental data were collected for two colonization periods: one in late winter and spring (Set 1), a second in summer (Set 2).During Set 1 algal biomass levels, as indicated by chlorophyll a, showed a sharp rise initially, but Set 2 islands exhibited a lag period of 7 to 12 days before a rapid increase in algal biomass was noted. Equilibrium chlorophyll a values were similar for both sets. High levels of phaeopigments were found at Stations 2, 3, and 4 during Set 2 resulting in large corrections in chlorophyll a readings. Ash-free dry weight values increased steadily through each colonization period.A model of biomass accumulation during colonization was constructed postulating three major processes — photosynthesis, respiration, and passive accumulation — which were modulated by three environmental factors — light, temperature, and plankton chlorophyll a levels. For simulations parameter values were taken from the literature where possible. Additional parameter values were set and literature values adjusted when the model was tuned to Set 2 data. A simulation with the tuned model using Set 1 environmental input resulted in a good prediction of equilibrium values, but a misinterpretation of initial values. The discrepancy between model predictions and data was alleviated when the passive accumulation rate was increased demonstrating the dependence of biomass values early in colonization on passive accumulation from the plankton.  相似文献

Commonly, attempts have been made to learn about the structure and function of the pulmonary vascular bed from measurements of arterial and venous pressures and blood flow rate under steady-state conditions (e.g., from pressure vs. flow data) or dynamic conditions (e.g., from vascular occlusion data). Zhuang et al. (J. Appl. Physiol. 55: 1341-1348, 1983) have presented a detailed model of steady-state cat lung hemodynamics based on direct measurements of anatomical and elasticity data. This model provides an opportunity to better understand the information content of the hemodynamic data. Therefore, in the present study we carried out a series of steady-state and dynamic experiments on isolated cat lungs. We then compared the results with those predicted by the model. We found that the model provided a good fit to the steady-state data. However, to fit the dynamic data, some modifications were necessary to account for the viscous behavior of the vessel walls and to move the first moment of the distribution of vascular resistance toward the arterial end of the vascular bed relative to that of the distribution of vascular compliance. Due to the sensitivity of the vascular resistance to small changes in vessel diameters and branching ratio, the modifications in morphometry represent small changes in morphometric data and are probably within the range of uncertainty in such data. The modifications had little effect on the steady-state model simulations but substantially improved the dynamic model simulations, suggesting that the dynamic data are quite sensitive to small changes in the relative distributions of vessel diameters and elasticity.  相似文献

The stochastic model of human reproduction presented in this paper removes some of the limitations of the Perrin—Sheps model. It considers the possibility of dependence of amenorrhea period on the preceding gestation period, and also for live births, on the breast-feeding practices of the mother. Two models, virtually identical in concepts, are considered depending on whether time is treated as a continuous or discrete variable. The basic distributions in the models are kept arbitrary, and, therefore, the results for all the existing homogeneous fertility models can be obtained directly from the general results as special cases. The results presented here include the distribution of the interval between two live births, and the probabilities of different states at a point in time. We also illustrate the applications of the models to special cases and generate many known results.  相似文献

In this paper, we offer a stability analysis of the cue interaction model of depth perception (House (1984)). Depth estimation using stereopsis suffers from the matching problem, the problem of correctly matching the retinal image of a feature in one eye, to its retinal image in the other eye. The Cue Interaction Model overcomes this by using monocular cues to disambiguate between the correct matches and the incorrect matches. Its decision making is based on the concept of cooperation and competition in a neural network. A general class of cooperative and competitive models has been mathematically analysed by Amari and Arbib (1977), with special attention given to equilibrium states and stability. In this paper we adapt their methods to study the above model. In particular, we prove that if the parameters are correctly tuned, the model successfully achieves its goals by suppressing the cues which represent the incorrect matches.Preparation of this paper was supported in part by NIH grant number NS-1 R01 NS24926 from NINCDS  相似文献

Pulse wave evaluation is an effective method for arteriosclerosis screening. In a previous study, we verified that pulse waveforms change markedly due to arterial stiffness. However, a pulse wave consists of two components, the incident wave and multireflected waves. Clarification of the complicated propagation of these waves is necessary to gain an understanding of the nature of pulse waves in vivo. In this study, we built a one-dimensional theoretical model of a pressure wave propagating in a flexible tube. To evaluate the applicability of the model, we compared theoretical estimations with measured data obtained from basic tube models and a simple arterial model. We constructed different viscoelastic tube set-ups: two straight tubes; one tube connected to two tubes of different elasticity; a single bifurcation tube; and a simple arterial network with four bifurcations. Soft polyurethane tubes were used and the configuration was based on a realistic human arterial network. The tensile modulus of the material was similar to the elasticity of arteries. A pulsatile flow with ejection time 0.3 s was applied using a controlled pump. Inner pressure waves and flow velocity were then measured using a pressure sensor and an ultrasonic diagnostic system. We formulated a 1D model derived from the Navier-Stokes equations and a continuity equation to characterize pressure propagation in flexible tubes. The theoretical model includes nonlinearity and attenuation terms due to the tube wall, and flow viscosity derived from a steady Hagen-Poiseuille profile. Under the same configuration as for experiments, the governing equations were computed using the MacCormack scheme. The theoretical pressure waves for each case showed a good fit to the experimental waves. The square sum of residuals (difference between theoretical and experimental wave-forms) for each case was <10.0%. A possible explanation for the increase in the square sum of residuals is the approximation error for flow viscosity. However, the comparatively small values prove the validity of the approach and indicate the usefulness of the model for understanding pressure propagation in the human arterial network.  相似文献

Auditory information is processed in a fine-to-crude hierarchical scheme, from low-level acoustic information to high-level abstract representations, such as phonological labels. We now ask whether fine acoustic information, which is not retained at high levels, can still be used to extract speech from noise. Previous theories suggested either full availability of low-level information or availability that is limited by task difficulty. We propose a third alternative, based on the Reverse Hierarchy Theory (RHT), originally derived to describe the relations between the processing hierarchy and visual perception. RHT asserts that only the higher levels of the hierarchy are immediately available for perception. Direct access to low-level information requires specific conditions, and can be achieved only at the cost of concurrent comprehension. We tested the predictions of these three views in a series of experiments in which we measured the benefits from utilizing low-level binaural information for speech perception, and compared it to that predicted from a model of the early auditory system. Only auditory RHT could account for the full pattern of the results, suggesting that similar defaults and tradeoffs underlie the relations between hierarchical processing and perception in the visual and auditory modalities.  相似文献

Summary Dotted (Dt) is the regulatory element of a two-unit controlling system in maize. Dt causes the inherited change from the recessive a 1 (colorless) to its dominant allele, A 1 (anthocyanin production), during the development of the stalk, leaves, and endosperm. The mutation events are observed as sectors of color in an anthocyaninless background. One of the most puzzling, but perhaps significant, aspects of controlling elements in maize is that they originate in conjunction with chromosome or chromatid breaks. This fact invokes a requirement that either an existing regulatory mechanism is disturbed by the breakage or that a foreign element is incorporated before fusion of the broken chromatids.Experimental crosses were made between Dt tester stocks and a pollen parent, a large proportion of whose chromosomes 9 were undergoing the chromatid type of bridge-breakage-fusion cycle. New Dt's were induced in endosperm sectors of 250 of 154,422 kernels tested (1/600); among these, two germinal Dt's (Dt crown 4 and Dt 5) were recovered, presumably due to chromatid breaks during meiosis or the first microspore division. Dt 5 produces a mutation pattern very similar to the original Dt 1 and is located 0.33 crossover units away from the yg 2 locus. This is close to the known location of Dt 1 (7 crossover units distal to the yg 2 locus) and is suggestive of a specific site for Dt inductive breaks. Dt crown 4, on the other hand, is inherited independently of the yg 2 locus and does not support this contention. Dt crown 4 represents a new state causing a high concentration of fine dots in the crown of the kernel, with little or no dotting at the base. The phase variation of Dt crown 4 is discussed together with the tissue-dependent expression of Dt in-ac 1 (Dotted, inactive-active). Dt in-ac 1 is a new state of Dt 1 and shows inactive (no a 1 to A 1 mutations) and active (a 1 to A 1 mutations) phases in the endosperm, whereas it is only in the active phase in the diploid scutellum. The observed phase variation was shown to be a property of the regulatory elements, Dt, responding to differences in the cellular environment. In appreciation of his help and guidance, I dedicate this article to Professor Marcus M. By numerical continuation of equilibria, we study a size-structured model for the dynamics of a cannibalistic fish population and its alternative resource. Because we model the cannibalistic interaction as dependent on the ratio of cannibal length and victim length, a cannibal experiences a size distribution of potential victims which depends on its own body size. We show how equilibria of the resulting infinite-dimensional dynamical system can be traced with an existing method for numerical continuation for physiologically structured population models. With this approach we found that cannibalism can induce bistability associated with a fold (or, saddle-node) bifurcation. The two stable states can be qualified as 'stunted' and 'piscivorous', respectively. We identify a new ecological mechanism for bistability, in which the energy gain from cannibalism plays a crucial role: Whereas in the stunted population state cannibals consume their victims, on average, while they are very small and yield little energy, in the piscivorous state cannibals consume their victims not before they have become much bigger, which results in a much higher mean yield of cannibalism. We refer to this mechanism as the 'Hansel and Gretel' effect. It is not related to any individual 'choice' or 'strategy', but depends purely on a difference in population size distribution. We argue that studying dynamics of size-structured population models with this new approach of equilibrium continuation extends the insight that can be gleaned from numerical simulations of the model dynamics.  相似文献

Summary Dotted (Dt) is the regulatory element of a two-unit controlling system in maize. Dt causes the inherited change from the recessive a (colorless) to its dominant allele, A (anthocyanin production), during the development of the stalk, leaves, and endosperm. The mutation events are observed as sectors of color in an anthocyaninless background.Since its discovery over 40 years ago, Dt has always been found in the terminal knob of the short arm of chromosome 9. This is puzzling because controlling and regulatory elements in general are not located permanently, but change positions (transpose) within the chromosomal complement. To resolve this seeming discrepancy, transpositions were looked for in a homozygous a Dt stock. Because the frequency of aleurone mutations is exponentially related to Dt dosage, a Dt transposition would result in a greatly increased number of dots if the egg or sperm nucleus contained both the transposed Dt and the Dt remaining on chromosome 9. A total of 6 transposed Dt's (Dt-T) were recovered in this manner. Dt-TA was found linked to the gene Y (yellow endosperm) of chromosome 6. Dt-TB no longer showed linkage with yg2 of chromosome 9, but remains unlocated (the original Dt in this stock is separated from yg2 by 6 or 7 cross-over units.). The remaining transpositions (C-F) assorted independently of Dt on chromosome 9.The transposed Dt's had the same effect as Dt on the frequency and timing of aleurone mutations. An increase in transposition frequency and losses of Dt-T's was characteristic of several of the transposed Dt's. Dt-T's B-F transposed so frequently that testcross ratios of 71 (three Dt' s) and 15 1 (four Dt' s) were observed. No secondary transpositions or losses of Dt-TA were detected. Thus, Dt-TA resembles the original Dt with regard to its transposition frequency and stability.Journal Paper No. J-8333 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa. Symmetry is usually computationally expensive to detect reliably, while it is relatively easy to perceive. In spite of many attempts to understand the neurofunctional properties of symmetry processing, no symmetry-specific activation was found in earlier cortical areas. Psychophysical evidence relating to the processing mechanisms suggests that the basic processes of symmetry perception would not perform a serial, point-by-point comparison of structural features but rather operate in parallel. Here, modeling of neural processes in psychophysical detection of bilateral texture symmetry is considered. A simple fine-grained algorithm that is capable of performing symmetry estimation without explicit comparison of remote elements is introduced. A computational model of symmetry perception is then described to characterize the underlying mechanisms as one-dimensional spatio-temporal neural processes, each of which is mediated by intracellular horizontal connections in primary visual cortex and adopts the proposed algorithm for the neural computation. Simulated experiments have been performed to show the efficiency and the dynamics of the model. Model and human performances are comparable for symmetry perception of intensity images. Interestingly, the responses of V1 neurons to propagation activities reflecting higher-order perceptual computations have been reported in neurophysiologic experiments.  相似文献
