The mesopelagic zone is a visual scene continuum in which organisms have developed various strategies to optimize photon capture. Here, we used light microscopy, stereology-assisted retinal topographic mapping, spectrophotometry and microspectrophotometry to investigate the visual ecology of deep-sea bioluminescent sharks [four etmopterid species (Etmopterus lucifer, E. splendidus, E. spinax and Trigonognathus kabeyai) and one dalatiid species (Squaliolus aliae)]. We highlighted a novel structure, a translucent area present in the upper eye orbit of Etmopteridae, which might be part of a reference system for counterillumination adjustment or acts as a spectral filter for camouflage breaking, as well as several ocular specialisations such as aphakic gaps and semicircular tapeta previously unknown in elasmobranchs. All species showed pure rod hexagonal mosaics with a high topographic diversity. Retinal specialisations, formed by shallow cell density gradients, may aid in prey detection and reflect lifestyle differences; pelagic species display areae centrales while benthopelagic and benthic species display wide and narrow horizontal streaks, respectively. One species (E. lucifer) displays two areae within its horizontal streak that likely allows detection of conspecifics'' elongated bioluminescent flank markings. Ganglion cell topography reveals less variation with all species showing a temporal area for acute frontal binocular vision. This area is dorsally extended in T. kabeyai, allowing this species to adjust the strike of its peculiar jaws in the ventro-frontal visual field. Etmopterus lucifer showed an additional nasal area matching a high rod density area. Peak spectral sensitivities of the rod visual pigments (λmax) fall within the range 484–491 nm, allowing these sharks to detect a high proportion of photons present in their habitat. Comparisons with previously published data reveal ocular differences between bioluminescent and non-bioluminescent deep-sea sharks. In particular, bioluminescent sharks possess higher rod densities, which might provide them with improved temporal resolution particularly useful for bioluminescent communication during social interactions.  相似文献

A new species of the lanternshark Etmopterus splendidus is described. This new species is distinguished from the congeners by the combination of the following characters: distance from snout tip to 1st dorsal spine much less than distance from the spine to upper caudal origin; caudal fin short, much less than head length; dermal denticles on lateral side of trunk with very small, erect thornlike, conical crowns, those on trunk arranged in regular longitudinal rows, and distinctly arranged on interdorsal area and on lateral trunk of interspace between 2nd dorsal and caudal, but not arranged in regular longitudinal rows on dorsal surface of interorbital and o abdomen; color in life purplish-black above and with inconspicuous bluish-black flank marks and three other bluish-black marks at base of caudal fin and along its axis; shape of flank marks narrow anterior to, but broader posterior to pelvic fins.  相似文献

对9种并殖吸虫成虫形态特征进行主成分分析及聚类分析,结果表明:在并殖吸虫成虫的6项主要特征中,体形因素及卵巢类型是重要的分类依据。在被分析的9个种中,怡乐村并殖吸虫、斯氏狸殖吸虫、巨睾狸殖吸虫、三平正并殖吸虫、异盘并殖吸虫、陈氏并殖吸虫与卫氏并殖吸虫7个种具有种的独立地位,而泡囊狸殖吸虫和扁囊并殖吸虫未能分别从斯氏狸殖吸虫和卫氏并殖吸虫中分开。  相似文献

Two previously recorded new species of the large-eye seabream genus Gymnocranius (Gymnocranius sp. D and Gymnocranius sp. E) remain undescribed. Here we describe Gymnocranius sp. E as Gymnocranius obesus sp. nov. This new species is morphologically distinct from all other known species under Gymnocranius by the following combination of characters: relatively deep body, with ratio of standard length to body depth 2.2–2.4; protruding large eye, with eye diameter about equal to or slightly larger than inter-orbital width; caudal fin moderately forked; no blue spots or wavy blue lines on cheek and snout in adults; fourth transversal dark bar on flank running from the sixth spine of the dorsal fin to the origin of the anal fin; anal, caudal and dorsal fins drab with yellowish to yellow margins. Gymnocranius obesus sp. nov. is distinct from G. griseus, with which it has been previously confused by a relatively larger head, scales above lateral line without dark basal patch, and a smaller number of front scales on the dorsal side of the head. Gymnocranius obesus sp. nov. is genetically distinct from its closest known relative, Gymnocranius sp. D by 104 diagnostic nucleotide characters, which translates into a 9.6% sequence divergence at the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Gymnocranius obesus sp. nov. reaches a length of at least 295 mm. Its distribution, from the Ryukyu Islands to Bali, including Taiwan and the Flores Sea, mostly coincides with the western half of the Coral Triangle.  相似文献

Macro- and microscopic characteristics of flank scales for 12 species were investigated from the Persian Gulf Coral Reefs. In Lutjanus argentimaculatus and L. russellii (family Lutjanidae), the scales of different flank regions were not different, while four characters showed variation in the scale of L. lutjanus i.e., scale shape (pentagonal, hexagonal and square), anterior margin (waved, scalloped and smooth), focus shape (circular and oblong) and focus position (postero-central and central), displayed variation. Scale type (ctenoid) and posterior margin (transforming ctenii) did not show variation and could be considered to be specific in this family. In Epinephelus chlorostigma (family Serranidae), the scales of flank regions did not display variation, while in E. areolatus, E. diacanthus and E. radiates, the scales showed considerable variation. The most variable characters were scale shape, posterior margin and focus shape. Therefore, in fish systematics studies on the base of scale, it is particularly important to compare scales from the same flank regions. Also, some criteria such as size-dependent alternation, ontogenetic changes and variation between flank regions, should be considered. This study supports the potential of scale morphology to help for the understanding of fish diversity in the coral reef ecosystem.  相似文献

Tetrahymena thermophila transforms from a pyriform-shaped trophic form to an elongate rapidly swimming, dispersal form under the appropriate conditions of starvation [Nelsen, E. M., and DeBault, L. E. (1978). J. Protozool.25, 113–119]. The development and control of the dispersal phenotype are examined. After an initial starvation period, the cell replaces its oral structures. During oral replacement, a caudal cilium emerges at the posterior end of the cell. As oral replacement is completed, the cell becomes spindle shaped and the newly-formed oral membranelles are positioned beneath the surface of the cell with somatic ciliary rows exterior to them. The spindle-shaped cell then elongates to become the dispersal form. While the cell is developing the new oral structures, it is also drastically increasing its numbers of somatic basal bodies and cilia. The events in the transformation pathway may be arrested or reversed by feeding the cell, except that once oral replacement has begun, it is completed along with an associated streamlining of the cell. Refed cells revert to the normal vegetative phenotype, except that some shape changes persist for several hours, suggesting that they are compatible with, but independent of, growth. Blockage of protein synthesis with cycloheximide prevents all changes associated with transformation, including the shape changes and elongation of the caudal cilium. The relation between transformation and conjugation has also been examined. Less transformation takes place when mating is possible, but transformed cells may also mate.  相似文献

A new nematode species, Rhabdochona (Globochona) puntii n. sp. (Rhabdochonidae), is described based on specimens collected from the intestine of the pool barb Puntius sophore (Hamilton) and Neolissochilus hexastichus (McClelland) (both Cyprinidae) from the Gadhena River, the Western Ghats, Maharashtra State, India. The nematode was also found in Wallago attu (Bloch & Schneider) which probably acts as postcyclic host. Rhabdochona (Globochona) puntii n. sp. differs markedly from its congeners in the body size, the number and distribution of caudal papillae, in the presence of an unpaired papilla-like structure on the anterior cloacal lip, and in having unusual shape and structure of the terminal crown of mucrons. This is the seventh species of the subgenus Globochona Moravec, 1972 reported from freshwater Indian fishes.  相似文献

The role of heterochronic phenomena in molluscan evolution is insufficiently understood but potentially significant. The aim of this paper is to explore some paedomorphic trends in the evolution of the Myophorellidae (Bivalvia: Trigoniida). Early ontogeny of general shell shape and ornamentation of one species of Steinmanella was analyzed and compared to data obtained for three species of Myophorella: two belonging to the subgenus M. (Promyophorella) (one from the Jurassic and one from the Cretaceous) and one belonging to the Jurassic M. (Myophorella). For general shell shape, a geometric morphometric analysis was performed on lateral views of the shells. Regarding ornamentation, flank costal disposition on the marginal carina, tubercle separation and relative development of the sub-commarginal subset of flank costae were quantified. A qualitative analysis was also performed. A two-trend shell shape development is considered as primitive. The first trend is marked by a relative reduction of the posterior margin together with a relative elongation of the shell. A tangential opisthogyrate growth component characterizes the second trend. There is a transitional stage where both trends interact. Early flank ornamentation is characterized by two or three sub-commarginal costae, continuous through the area, after which oblique costae with fine tubercles start to form. The subgenus M. (Myophorella) evolved by paedomorphic retention of juvenile shell shape and ornamentation, resulting in a large shell with coarse tubercles. Shell morphology in Steinmanella evolved by paedomorphic suppression of the primitive second trend in the development of the shell, resulting in an orthogyrate shell shape, and the retention of juvenile ornamentation (coarse tubercles, more sub-commarginal costae, juvenile rates of costal disposition). The paedomorphic (most likely by deceleration) retention of juvenile shell morphology within the Myophorellidae seems to have been recurrent within the group, resulting in many cases of convergence, and obscuring the phylogenetic relationships among its species.  相似文献

A microorganism attributed to the genus Rickettsiella was found as a pathogen of the amphipod Rivulogammarus pulex collected in the south of Sweden. The rickettsiae were studied using light and electron microscopical methods, and different stainings were tested. The polychromatic staining by J. M. Vetterling and D.E. Thompson (1972, Stain Technol., 47, 164–165) appeared most suitable. Several tissues were infected, most heavily in the fat cells. Infection was restricted to the cytoplasm and infected cells were hypertrophied. The rickettsiae developed inside membrane-lined vacuoles and three morphological types were observed. Type 1 was irregular rods with a length of 0.6–1.4 μm; type 2 electron-dense, slightly bent rods of regular shape, 0.5–0.6 μm long; type 3 rounded cells with a diameter of 1.1–2.8 μm containing irregular crystal-like bodies.  相似文献

Erromyzon damingshanensis, a new sucker loach is described from the Pearl River drainage in Guangxi, China. The new species Erromyzon damingshanensis is distinguished from the other species of the genus in having a crescentic median lobe of the rostral fold, rostral barbels shorter than rostral fold; postlabial groove broadly interrupted medially, seven branched dorsal fin rays, 16 branched pectoral fin rays, lateral line scales 88–95, caudal peduncle depth larger than its length; body with 12 irregular bars on flank, interrupted on dorsum.  相似文献

Cucullanus brevicaudatus n. sp. (Cucullanidae) is described from the intestine of Balistes capriscus Gmelin (Balistidae) off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The new species can be differentiated from its congeners in the small body length, the shape of the gubernaculum, the particular size and morphology of the tail in both males and females, the arrangement of the caudal papillae, the narrow oesophageal base, and the eggs with rugged shells. In addition, the combination of some features, i.e. number of caudal papillae, spicule length, oesophagus/body length ratio, host family and geographical distribution, can help to easily distinguish the new species from other cucullanids. Considering these features, C. brevicaudatus differs from the species assigned to Dichelyne Törnquist, 1931 which exhibit morphological proximity with Cucullanus Müller, 1777. Regarding the life-cycle of cucullanid nematodes, available evidence suggests that some species are primarily heteroxenous using invertebrates (i.e. crustaceans, polychaetes) as intermediate hosts, but in other a histotrophic phase in the definitive host replaces the intermediate host.  相似文献

Aphelenchoides resinosi n. sp. and Ektaphelenchus joyceae n. sp. are described and illustrated from red pines of the Allegheny plateau of Maryland, USA. The new species were found in trees infested with Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Primary diagnostic characters of A. resinosi females are constriction of the head, basal stylet knobs, tong postuterine sac, two incisures in the lateral field, and conical tail four to five anal body widths long with a simple terminal mucro. Diagnostic characters of the males are two pairs of subventral caudal papillae and spicule shape: Primary diagnostic characters of E. joyceae females are a slight constriction of the head, six similar lips, conical tail, and short postuterine sac. Diagnostic characters of the males are spicule size and shape, a single row of spermatocytes, and one pair of caudal papillae. Within-tree distributions of A. resinosi and E. joyceae are presented. A total of 70% of both red-needled and chlorotic-needled trees in the study were positive for A. resinosi and E. joyceae. Branch hierarchy was related to the percentage of samples positive for A. resinosi.  相似文献

Between 1951 and January 1972 listeriosis was diagnosed bacteriologically in 101 Canadian patients. This study adds 80 cases to the 21 reported from Metropolitan Toronto by Sepp and Roy in 1963. The Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, Ottawa, collated epidemiological and clinical data. Serotypes of Listeria monocytogenes included 4b (53), 1 (15), 1b (6), 1a (2), 2 and 3. Clinically, 54 patients had meningitis and 23 septicemia. The mortality rate was 30%.Between 1954 and January 1972 listeriosis affected 15 British Columbian patients: nine were male and six female; 12 were less than 1 or more than 45 years old. Among the patients were a pregnant mother and the son to whom she gave premature birth. A day-old infant and an elderly man died.  相似文献
