AimsWe tested the hypothesis that body fat percentage determines cardiac sympathovagal balance in healthy subjects.Main methodsHeart rate variability (HRV) measurements were made of the standard deviation of the normal–normal RR intervals (SDNN) and the low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio, from time domain and fast Fourier transform spectral analysis of electrocardiogram RR intervals during trials of uncontrolled and controlled (paced) breathing at 0.2 Hz. Body fat percentage was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometric (DEXA) scanning. Significance of differences between uncontrolled and controlled (paced) breathing was determined by analysis of variance and correlations between body fat percentage and HRV measurements by Pearson's coefficient at P < 0.05.Key findingsPercent body fat was negatively correlated with LF/HF during the uncontrolled breathing (r = ? 0.56, two-tailed P < 0.05, one-tailed P < 0.01) but not during the paced breathing trial (r = ? 0.34, (P > 0.1).SignificanceWe conclude that sympathetic activity produced by paced breathing at 0.2 Hz can obscure the relationship between body fat percentage and sympathovagal balance and that high body fat percentage may be associated with low sympathetic modulation of the heart rate in healthy adolescent/young adult males.  相似文献

Anthropometry is simple, cheap, portable and non-invasive method for the assessment of body composition. While the Nagamine and Suzuki body density prediction equation has been frequently used to estimate %BF of Japanese, the equation was developed more than 40 years ago and its applicability to the current Japanese population has not been studied. This study aimed to compare %BF results estimated from anthropometry and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in order to examine applicability of the Nagamine and Suzuki equation. Body composition of 45 Japanese males (age: 24.3+/-5.5 years, stature: 171.6+/-5.8 cm, body mass: 62.6+/-7.1 kg, %BF: 15.7+/-5.6%) were assessed using whole-body DXA (Hologic QDR-2000) scan and anthropometry using the protocol of the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK). From anthropometric measurements %BF was calculated using the Nagamine and Suzuki equation. The results showed that the Nagamine and Suzuki equation significantly (p<0.05) underestimated %BF of Japanese males compared to the DXA results. There was a trend towards greater underestimation as the estimated %BF values using DXA increased. New %BF prediction equations were proposed from the DXA and anthropometry results. Application of the proposed equations may assist in more accurate assessment of body fatness in Japanese males living today.  相似文献

Anthropometry is a simple and cost-efficient method for the assessment of body composition. However prediction equations to estimate body composition using anthropometry should be 'population-specific'. Most popular body composition prediction equations for Japanese females were proposed more than 40 years ago and there is some concern regarding their usefulness in Japanese females living today. The aim of this study was to compare percentage body fat (%BF) estimated from anthropometry and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to examine the applicability of commonly used prediction equations in young Japanese females. Body composition of 139 Japanese females aged between 18 and 27 years of age (BMI range: 15.1-29.1 kg/m(2)) was measured using whole-body DXA (Lunar DPX-LIQ) scans. From anthropometric measurements %BF was estimated using four equations developed from Japanese females. The results showed that the traditionally employed prediction equations for anthropometry significantly (p<0.01) underestimate %BF of young Japanese females and therefore are not valid for the precise estimation of body composition. New %BF prediction equations were proposed from the DXA and anthropometry results. Application of the proposed equations may assist in more accurate assessment of body fatness in Japanese females living today.  相似文献

Previous research has often used correlations as a statistical method to show agreement; however, this is not a valid use of the statistic. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bias and limits of agreement for three methods of estimating percentage body fat for 117 male and 114 female university athletes: hydrodensitometry (HYD), bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and skinfold calipers (SKF). The mean (SD) percentage body fat for males as assessed by HYD, BIA and SKF methods, respectively, were 13.2 (3.3)%, 14.1 (3.3)% and 13.0 (3.2)%. Female body fat measurements were 22.5 (3.9)%, 23.7 (4.3)% and 23.8 (4.2)%, respectively. Pearson product moment correlations for male and female body fat percentages between the three methods were high, ranging from 0.81 to 0.86 (P < 0.05). However, compared to the criterion measure of body fat percentage (HYD), the magnitude of agreement BIA and SKF revealed a different pattern. The mean absolute difference between HYD and BIA measurements of body fat for males was −0.8 (2.0)% fat, and between HYD and SKF was it was 0.2 (1.7)% fat. The mean absolute difference for females between HYD and BIA was −1.2 (2.5)%; for HYD and SKF it was −1.4 (2.2)%. Compared to the HYD measures for males and females, the BIA and SKF measures were as much as a 3.8% underestimation and a 6.2% overestimation of body fat. This study provides evidence that the strength of a correlation does not indicate agreement between two methods. In future, reliability and validity studies should examine the absolute differences between two variables and calculate limits of agreement around which a practitioner can appreciate the precision of the methodologies. This study aimed to search for relations between body fat percentage and skin temperature and to describe possible effects on skin temperature as a result of fat percentage in each anatomical site. Women (26.11±4.41 years old) (n =123) were tested for: body circumferences; skin temperatures (thermal camera); fat percentage and lean mass from trunk, upper and lower limbs; and body fat percentage (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry). Values of minimum (TMi), maximum (TMa), and mean temperatures (TMe) were acquired in 30 regions of interest. Pearson's correlation was estimated for body circumferences and skin temperature variables with body fat percentage. Participants were divided into groups of high and low fat percentage of each body segment, of which TMe values were compared with Student's t-test. Linear regression models for predicting body fat percentage were tested. Body fat percentage was positively correlated with body circumferences and palm temperatures, while it was negatively correlated with most temperatures, such as TMa and TMe of posterior thighs (r =−0.495 and −0.432), TMe of posterior lower limbs (r =−0.488), TMa of anterior thighs (r =−0.406) and TMi and TMe of posterior arms (r =−0.447 and −0.430). Higher fat percentages in the specific anatomical sites tended to decrease TMe, especially in posterior thighs, shanks and arms. Skin temperatures and body circumferences predicted body fat percentage with 58.3% accuracy (R =0.764 and R2 =0.583). This study clarifies that skin temperature distribution is influenced by the fat percentage of each body segment.  相似文献

Background

Limited data have indicated that body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) of athletes and young adults provide misleading results concerning body fat content. This study was aimed at the evaluation of the relationship between different surrogate indices of fatness (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR and body adiposity index (BAI)) with the percentage of body fat in Polish students with respect to their sex and physical activity.

Methods

A total of 272 students volunteered to participate in the study. Of these students, 177 physical education students (90 males and 87 females) were accepted as active (physical activity of 7 to 9 hours/week); and 95 students of other specializations (49 males and 46 females) were accepted as sedentary (physical activity of 1.5 hours/week). Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were measured, and BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were calculated. Body fat percentage was assessed using four skinfold measurements.

Results

Classification of fatness according to the BMI and the percentage of body fat have indicated that BMI overestimates fatness in lean subjects (active men and women, sedentary men), but underestimates body fat in obese subjects (sedentary women). In all groups, BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were significantly correlated with the percentage of body fat (with the exception of WHR and hip circumference in active and sedentary women, respectively). However, coefficients of determination not exceeding 50% and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients lower than 0.9 indicated no relationship between measured and calculated body fat.

Conclusion

The findings in the present study support the concept that irrespective of physical activity and sex none of the calculated indices of fatness are useful in the determination of body fat in young adults. Thus, it seems that easily calculated indices may contribute to distorted body image and unhealthy dietary habits observed in many young adults in Western countries, but also in female athletes.  相似文献

C-reactive protein (CRP) is considered a marker of inflammation, which is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. However, determinants of CRP remain unclear and were studied in a strictly defined cohort of healthy premenopausal women (n=233) using multiple regression models. Independent predictors of serum CRP (model R2=0.59) were percentage body fat, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), sex hormone-binding globulin and white blood cell count. The close association between CRP and ALP suggests that enzymatic activity of ALP may be important for the anti-inflammatory effects of CRP, which should be confirmed with additional studies.  相似文献

A heritable ventricular septal defect (VSD) was found in a strain of Yucatan miniature swine. The defect was determined to be a high membranous VSD analogous in anatomic location to the most common from of VSD in humans. Eighteen animals were studied clinically, hemodynamically and at necropsy to characterize the defect. Three mature animals developed pulmonary hypertension. Three animals were found to have a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in addition to the VSD. VSD is heritable probably due to polygenic factors. VSD in Yucatan miniature swine may be a suitable model of the human disease syndrome.  相似文献

Hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and associated insulin resistance are hallmarks of diabetes mellitus. Purposes of the study reported here were to develop practical methods for assessment of in vivo insulin sensitivity and determine contributions of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia to insulin resistance in the porcine model of alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. Male Yucatan swine groups were treated for 20 weeks: control (C), high fat-fed (2% cholesterol) hyperlipidemic (H), alloxan-induced diabetic normolipidemic (D), diabetic high fat-fed (diabetic dyslipidemic, DD), and diabetic dyslipidemic treated with the lipid-lowering agent atorvastatin (DDA). Plasma cholesterol concentration increased sixfold in animals of groups H, DD, and DDA, whereas triglyceride concentration increased threefold in animals of group DD only. Diabetics had decreases in glucose tolerance and pancreatic immunostaining for insulin. Use of the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp procedure indicated that maximal insulin-stimulated glucose uptake was similar to that in humans, but this method was not practical for use in pigs. Instead, a more convenient and valid insulin sensitivity test involving suppression of insulin secretion with somatostatin and a single insulin injection was used. Insulin sensitivity was greatly impaired by anesthesia with isoflurane, but was not affected by use of the anxiolytic agent diazepam. Insulin sensitivity decreased by 75% in diabetics (groups D, DD, DDA), compared with animals of groups C and H, and was inversely related to fasting blood glucose concentration (r = -0.72). Insulin treatment to restore blood glucose values of diabetics (> 250 mg/dl) to near control values (< 100 mg/dl) promptly restored insulin sensitivity to control values. We conclude that hyperglycemia is a major cause of insulin resistance in the porcine model of alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia.  相似文献

A symmetrical body may signal the ability of an individual to cope with developmental perturbations and may thus be considered a ‘health certificate’. It is known that symmetrical men are considered more attractive by women and that their reproductive success is higher. This study examined the associations between measures of body structure and fluctuating asymmetry in young Turkish men. Weight, height, and bioelectrical impedance were measured in a sample of 250 men residing in Ankara (mean age = 18.4, SD = 0.6), and body mass index was calculated. Fluctuating asymmetry was measured using hand length, hand width, elbow width, wrist width, knee width, ankle width, foot length, foot width, ear length, and ear width. According to the obtained findings, there is a negative linear relationship between composite fluctuating asymmetry (CFA) and height, and a positive quadratic relationship between CFA and fat mass. These results might indicate that the tall Turkish men with medium body fat mass percentage display more developmental stability.  相似文献

We investigated the regulatory effects of structural differences among methylxanthine derivatives on the elevation of body fat percentage in developmental-stage rats. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine were used as the methylxanthines. High-fat diets (20% lard) containing each methylxanthine (0.025%) were administered to male Sprague-Dawley rats for 12 weeks, with the result that the body fat percentage was generally reduced in each methylxanthine-fed group. The abdominal adipose tissue weight in the caffeine group was also significantly lower than that in the control group, the serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the caffeine group also being significantly lower than the levels in the control group. The study results suggest that caffeine could contribute most to preventing arteriosclerotic diseases.  相似文献

The biological role of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its less active sulphated conjugate DHEAS was investigated in two experiments using Yucatan miniature swine. In experiment 1, plasma levels of both DHEA(S) among males were greater than female pigs that ranged in age from 0.3 to 84 mo old (P < 0.0001). In males, DHEA(S) were related inversely to serum triglycerides; DHEA was positively related to triglycerides in females (P < 0.01). In experiment 2, four 2-yr old male pigs, used as their own control, showed a 5% decrease in body weight, 11% increase in energy expenditure, 88% increase in lipid, and 100% decrease in glucose utilization (P < 0.0001) in response to DHEA vs. placebo treatments when adjusted for body weight. Plasma DHEA(S) were not different between treatment conditions. Glucose tolerance and plasma insulin levels were not different from controls. In vivo response to norepinephrine indicated beta-adrenergic sensitivity was altered by DHEA. Present findings suggest DHEA and/or its hormone products are important in modulating energy expenditure and lipid utilization for energy in male animals. The role of DHEA in energy metabolism and the difference between sexes warrant further investigation.  相似文献

Today, serious health problems as overweight and obesity are not just constricted to the developed world, but also increase in the developing countries (Prentice 2006, Ramachandram et al. 2002). Focusing on this issue, BMI and percentage of body fat were compared in 2094 schoolchildren from two cross-sectional studies from India and Germany investigated in 2008 and 2009. The German children are in all age groups significantly taller, whereas the Indian children show higher values in BMI (e.g. 12 years: Indian: around 22 kg/m2; German: around 19 kg/m2) and in the percentage of body fat (e.g. 12 years: Indian: around 27%; German: around 18-20%) in most of the investigated age groups. The Indian children have significantly higher BMI between 10 and 13 (boys) respectively 14 years (girls). Indian children showed significant higher percentage of body fat between 10 and 15 years (boys) and between 8 and 16 years (girls). The difference in overweight between Indian and German children was strongest at 11 (boys) and 12 (girls) years: 70% of the Indian but 20% of the German children were classified as overweight. In countries such as India that undergo nutritional transition, a rapid increase in obesity and overweight is observed. In contrast to the industrialized countries, the risk of overweight in developing countries is associated with high socioeconomic status. Other reasons of the rapid increase of overweight in the developing countries caused by different environmental or genetic factors are discussed.  相似文献

Objective: Increased BMI is a well‐recognized risk factor for radiographic knee osteoarthritis (rKOA); however, the contributions of the components of body composition, body fat distribution, and height to this association are not clear. Research Methods and Procedures: We examined 779 women ≥45 years of age from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project. Body composition was assessed using DXA, and rKOA was defined as Kellgren‐Lawrence grade ≥2. Logistic regression models examined the association between rKOA and the fourth compared with the first quartiles of anthropometric, body composition, and fat distribution measures adjusting for age, ethnicity, and prior knee injury. Results: The adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence interval of BMI and weight were 5.27 (3.05, 9.13) and 5.28 (3.05, 9.16), respectively. In separate models, higher odds of rKOA were also found for fat mass [4.54 (2.68, 7.69)], percent fat mass [3.84 (2.26, 6.54)], lean mass [3.94 (2.22, 6.97)], and waist circumference [4.15 (2.45, 7.02)]. Waist‐to‐hip ratio was not associated with rKOA [1.45 (0.86, 2.43)], and percent lean mass was associated with lower odds [0.20 (0.11, 0.35)]. Taller women had higher odds of rKOA after adjustment for BMI [1.77 (1.05, 3.00)]. Discussion: This study confirms that BMI and weight are strongly associated with rKOA in women and suggests that precise measurements of body composition and measures of fat distribution may offer no advantage over the more simple measures of BMI or weight in assessment of risk of rKOA.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to describe postpubertal changes in total and abdominal adiposity in young men and the relation to changes in physical activity (PA). The study included 107 white men with a mean age of 17.1 +/- 1.7 years at baseline. Total percentage body fat (%BF) and abdominal percentage body fat (abd%BF) were measured at baseline and after a mean time of 28, 68, and 92 months using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). PA (h/week) was assessed at each visit by questionnaire. Over the study period, significant increases of 7.8 +/- 5.5%BF and 9.0 +/- 5.6 abd%BF were observed. Subjects who were active athletes throughout the study (n = 24), or nonathletes not changing their level of PA during follow-up (n = 27) increased 5.7 +/- 3.2 and 8.1 +/- 6.7%BF, respectively. Athletes who quit organized training during follow-up period (n = 56) increased by 8.7 +/- 4.9%BF. In the total cohort, the average annual gains in BMI, %BF, and abd%BF were 0.4 kg/m(2), 0.9%BF, and 1.1abd%BF (all P < 0.0001), respectively. Adjustment for changes in PA altered the coefficient magnitudes only marginally. Changes in PA were, however, significantly and inversely associated with changes in %BF and abd%BF (P = 0.005 and P = 0.02, respectively), but were not significantly associated with BMI development (P = 0.15). In summary, our results indicate that the natural course of adiposity development in postpubertal men is characterized by adiposity gains. The influence of PA on especially abd%BF may influence the future risk of cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

The use of miniature swine in biomedical research is increasing; however, a comparison of cardiac function and morphology between strains has yet to be characterized. The purpose of this project was to examine comprehensive hemodynamics and cardiac morphology of three groups of ten normal, 4 months old, age-matched Yucatan miniature (MINI) pigs, Yucatan micropigs (MICRO) and Hanford (HAN) miniature pigs, 5 males and five females per group. Closed chest cardiac catheterization under equivalent conditions was performed followed by post mortem cardiac morphometry. Mean arterial pressure was significantly greater in the Hanford group when compared to both the minipig and micropig pigs (HAN: 89 +/- 4; MINI: 48 +/- 3; MICRO: 53 +/- 2 mmHg). Pulmonary vascular resistance was significantly different between the three groups (HAN: 9 +/- 1; MINI: 60 +/- 12; MICRO: 111 +/- 29 dyne x sec/cm x m2). The Hanford strain had a significantly smaller heart weight to body weight ratio than the other two groups (HAN: 4.6 +/- 1.0; MINI: 5.7 +/- 0.1; MICRO: 5.5 +/- 1.0). Variations in cardiovascular parameters occur among these strains and should be considered when constructing experimental designs.  相似文献

Objective: This study presents total body volume (TBV) and regional body volume, and their relationships with widely used body composition indices [BMI, waist circumference (WC), and percentage body fat (% fat)] in severely obese adults (BMI ≥35 kg/m2). Research Methods and Procedures: We measured TBV, trunk volume (TV), arm volume (AV), leg volume (LV), and WC and estimated % fat in 32 severely obese persons with BMI 36 to 62 kg/m2 (23 women; age, 19 to 65 years; weight, 91 to 182 kg) and in 58 persons with BMI <35 kg/m2 (28 women; age, 18 to 83 years; weight, 48 to 102 kg) using a newly validated 3‐day photonic image scanner (3DPS, Model C9036–02, Hamamatsu Co., Japan) and calculated TV/TBV, AV/TBV, and LV/TBV. Results: Men had significantly larger TBV and higher TV/TBV and AV/TBV, but significantly lower LV/TBV than women, independently of BMI. TV/TBV increased while AV/TBV and LV/TBV decreased with increasing BMI, WC, and % fat, and the rate of increase in TV/TBV per % fat was significantly greater in severely obese individuals than in individuals with BMI <35 kg/m2. The relationships for TBV with % fat were much lower than with BMI or WC. Conclusion: Body volume gains were mainly in the trunk region in adults, irrespective of sex or BMI. For a given BMI, WC, or % fat, men had a significantly larger TV than women. The implication is that men could have higher health risks due to having higher trunk body weight as a proportion of total body weight compared with severely obese or less severely obese women.  相似文献
