Sound recordings and behavioural data were collected from four primate species of two genera (Macaca, Presbytis). Comparative analyses of structural and behavioural aspects of vocal communication revealed a high degree of intrageneric similarity but striking intergeneric differences. In the two macaque species (Macaca silenus, Macaca radiata), males and females shared the major part of the repertoire. In contrast, in the two langurs (Presbytis johnii, Presbytis entellus), many calls were exclusive to adult males. Striking differences between both species groups occurred with respect to age-specific patterns of vocal behaviour. The diversity of vocal behaviour was assessed from the number of different calls used and the proportion of each call in relation to total vocal output for a given age/sex class. In Macaca, diversity decreases with the age of the vocalizer, whereas in Presbytis the age of the vocalizer and the diversity of vocal behaviour are positively correlated. A comparison of the data of the two genera does not suggest any causal relationship between group composition (e.g. multi-male vs. one-male group) and communication system. Within each genus, interspecific differences in vocal behaviour can be explained by differences in social behaviour (e.g. group cohesion, intergroup relation, mating behaviour) and functional disparities. Possible factors responsible for the pronounced intergeneric differences in vocal behaviour between Macaca and Presbytis are discussed.  相似文献

We earlier reported the successful experimental transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti from humans to the Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus) [Misra, S., Tyagi, K., Chatterjee, R.K., 1997. Experimental transmission of nocturnally periodic Wuchereria bancrofti to Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus). Experimental Parasitology 86,155-157.; Dube, A., Murthy, P.K., Puri, S.K., Misra-Bhattacharya, S., 2004. Presbytis entellus: a primate model for parasitic disease research. Trends in Parasitology 20(8), 358-360.] using a small number of animals. The present study, involving 27 langur monkeys, found the development of pathological manifestations ranging from filarial fever, lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, hydrocoele, and limb edema to minor histopathological changes in tissues after single, double, triple, or multiple inoculations of infective larvae of W. bancrofti recovered from Culex quinquefasciatus fed on human microfilaraemic blood. Thirty-eight percent of the infected langurs developed detectable microfilaraemia in their blood. Single or double larval exposure resulted in better worm establishment than multiple exposures with small numbers of larvae. All of the langurs receiving a single large inoculum and 85.71% of those receiving two inoculations harbored adult parasites. Worm establishment decreased with increasing number of larval inoculations. In all, 60% of infected langurs developed classical gross-pathological symptoms of lymphatic filariasis. Of these, 29.16% developed thickening of the lymphatics, 25% suffered from periodic rise in rectal temperature, and 16.66% developed scrotal swelling with presence of microfilariae in the hydrocoele fluid. Only one out of 25 langurs (4%) developed acute limb edema. It appeared that a single inoculum of a large number of infective larvae was able to induce maximum pathology. Fifty-six percent of the infected langurs acquired a peculiar sitting posture, retracting both the hind limbs, usually after 4-5 months of larval inoculation and eventually resulting in reduced mobility. Oral administration of diethylcarbamazine (citrate) at 12mg/kg for 12 consecutive days to one langur caused 80% suppression in microfilaraemia on day 8, killing all the adult parasites. Of the two immunosuppressed (cortisone- or prednisolone-treated) male rhesus monkeys included in the study, neither developed any of the above lymphatic symptoms or parasites after receiving larval inoculations on two or three occasions; however, a rise in rectal temperature in one of the animals was noticed. The present study thus reveals that the Indian leaf monkey, P. entellus, may serve as an ideal non-human primate model of human bancroftian filariasis for carrying out longitudinal studies on pathology, host-parasite interactions, and preclinical evaluation of candidate anti-filarial drugs or vaccines.  相似文献

Analysis of data on age and reproductive performance in 16 captive female Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus) shows that adult females under the age of 6 years and over the age of 19 years had the lowest rates of reproductive success as measured by the production of viable young that survived beyond 30 days of age. With the possible exception of one female, females over the age of 19 years experienced a variety of idiosyncratic reproductive problems but did not experience a true menopause as defined by total cessation of menstrual cycles. There was no support for the hypothesis that langur monkey females have evolved a lengthy postreproductive period.  相似文献

Serum samples from wild Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus) from Mysore State, India, were compared to samples from a laboratory colony from Davis, Calif., for antibodies to rotavirus, which is an important cause of gastroenteritis in mammals. Animals from the laboratory colony had a higher frequency and higher levels of antibody than wild animals. It is likely that wild populations of langurs have a much lower incidence of rotaviral infection than laboratory populations, which are exposed to both crowded conditions and rotaviruses from other species.  相似文献

Two troops of grey langur monkeys (Presbytis entellus entellus) were observed in the Gir Forest, western India for approximately 220 hours in two of three seasons at very high crude densities ranging from 115–128 langurs per km2. Daily activity patterns and home range use are described and a scan-sampling technique of activity distribution employed. Food and predator avoidance are estimated to be major determinants of population density and home range size, structure, and composition.  相似文献

This behavior repertoire for the Indian langur monkey (Presbytis entellus) is based on observations of free-ranging langurs in north and central India and on an ongoing study of social behavior in colony-living langur monkeys. The purposes of this repertoire are: (1) to allow the investigator to record all social behavior observed, (2) to allow comparison with the results of other observations, and (3) to draw a baseline picture of behavior against which the effects of experimental manipulations may be measured. The behavior units of this repertoire are organized into the categories of general behaviors, infant caretaking, sexual, play, vocalization, agonistic, and grooming. Each unit is defined and examples are given of the contexts in which behaviors are most often used. The repertoire, as designed, is appropriate for use with a focal animal sampling method.  相似文献

Acoustical signals of free-ranging Presbytis entellus were analyzed with the aid of sonagrams. Tape-recordings were from two ecologically-different habitats in North India, the Kumaon Hills on the southern slope of the Himalayas and the plains habitat of Rajasthan. The acoustical quality and the spectrographic structure of the signals are described and their communicative functions within the social context discussed. We found significant differences in the acoustical repertoire of the langurs of the two habitats both in the tone quality and the spectrographical structure of single signals serving the same functions in both regions and in functional deviations of identically or similarly structured vocalizations. Some of these differences appear to be phylogenetic adaptations to the different environmental conditions of the habitats or to be related to special types of social organization in the two separate langur populations.  相似文献

Adult male Nilgiri langurs (Presbytis johnii) utter loud call bouts consisting of one or more phrases. Phrases are made up of several units showing similar or different structural features. The units involved differ with respect to not only their physical structure but also their overall utilization: three vocal patterns are uttered exclusively by mature males living in bisexual groups or all-male bands and, in addition to being part of loud call bouts, are given during encounters with terrestrial predators; two vocal patterns are uttered by males and females, again not just as constituents of loud calls; and one vocal pattern is given exclusively by mature males living in bisexual groups. Within a given bout, phrases differ not only with respect to their composition but also in their temporal organization. In addition to the acoustic components, loud calls are regularly accompanied by stereotyped motoric displays. The motoric and acoustic components of loud call displays appear independently of each other and at different times during ontogeny. The development of the display is characterized by combination of units with different structural features and synchronization of vocal and motoric components. Although more evidence is needed, our observations suggest that the development of loud call displays coincides with the aquisitation of social maturation and competence and requires not only social experience but also a certain amount of motoric training. In spite of the high degree of ritualization, loud call displays are not completely fixed in form, but instead are open to individual- and population-specific variation.  相似文献

The two recently proposed taxonomies of the langurs and leaf monkeys (Subfamily Colobinae) provide different implications to our understanding of the evolution of Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs. Groves (2001) [Groves, C.P., 2001. Primate Taxonomy. Smithsonian Institute Press, Washington], placed Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs in the genus Trachypithecus, thereby suggesting disjunct distribution of the genus Trachypithecus. [Brandon-Jones, D., Eudey, A.A., Geissmann, T., Groves, C.P., Melnick, D.J., Morales, J.C., Shekelle, M., Stewart, C.-B., 2003. Asian primate classification. Int. J. Primatol. 25, 97-162] placed these langurs in the genus Semnopithecus, which suggests convergence of morphological characters in Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs with Trachypithecus. To test these scenarios, we sequenced and analyzed the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and two nuclear DNA-encoded genes, lysozyme and protamine P1, from a variety of colobine species. All three markers support the clustering of Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs with Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus), while leaf monkeys of Southeast Asian (Trachypithecus) form a distinct clade. The phylogenetic position of capped and golden leaf monkeys is still unresolved. It is likely that this species group might have evolved due to past hybridization between Semnopithecus and Trachypithecus clades.  相似文献

Analysis of a Nilgiri langur (Presbytis johnii) home range change   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Little published information exists detailing home range changes among nonhuman primates. Resulting from human destruction of the habitat, one of the observed Nilgiri langur troops was forced to relocate its home range, during which several interesting behavioral patterns emerged. Most important was the observation that the animals were very reluctant to desert the home range, even when the last trees in the core area were being destroyed. Adult males and adult females responded differently to the destruction and resultant shift. The males appeared less nervous than the females and deserted the home range prior to them. The reaction of surrounding troops to the shift of troop A, strongly suggests territorial behavior among Nilgiri langurs. Finally, this shift, along with other observations reported elsewhere, demonstrates that Nilgiri langurs are quite adaptable and appear to possess the ability to survive in an ecology being rapidly destroyed by the human population.This study was supported by Public Health Service grant MH 11099-01 attached to Fellowship 2 F1-MH-22, 140-02 (BEH).  相似文献

The primary structure of pancreatic ribonuclease from langur (Presbytis entellus) has been determined. This sequence differs from that of human pancreatic ribonuclease at 14 (11%) of the amino acid positions. Eight of these 14 differences involve changes of charge, with the langur enzyme having five fewer positive charges than the human enzyme. The difference in charge between human and langur ribonuclease may be an adaptation to the different requirements for a nondigestive and a digestive role, respectively. A number of similarities in expression, gene duplications, and properties between mammalian ribonucleases and lysozymes have been observed, indicating similar adaptations in both enzyme systems.  相似文献

We assessed the distribution and abundance of 4 species of diurnal primates viz. lion-tailed macaque, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri langur and Hanuman langur, in 2 areas—Brahmagiri-Makut and Sirsi-Honnavara—in rain forests of the Western Ghats in the state of Karnataka, India. The Nilgiri langurs in Brahmagiri-Makut and the lion-tailed macaques in Sirsi-Honnavara are the northernmost populations of the 2 species in the Western Ghats. The 2 regions represent changes in ecological zones in the Western Ghats. In Brahmagiri-Makut, Hanuman langurs and bonnet macaques occupy lower elevations whereas Nilgiri langurs live in relatively higher altitudes. Only one group of lion-tailed macaques was in Brahmagiri-Makut. In the forests of Sirsi-Honnavara, 3 species of primates viz. lion-tailed macaque, bonnet macaque and Hanuman langur were in larger numbers throughout the forest. A self-sustainable single population of 32 groups of lion-tailed macaques occurred in Sirsi-Honnavara. Few subspecies of Hanuman langurs exist in the study regions. Due to local hunting practices, the relative abundance of primates in Brahmagiri-Makut is lower than that in Sirsi-Honnavara.  相似文献

During a field study on habituated groups of wild Nilgiri langurs (Presbytis johnii),four cases of group fission were observed which differed markedly from group changes reported in other species of the same genus. All fissions occurred in groups with more than one mature male and roughly coincided with the onset of loud call vocalization by the second mature male group member. As a result of the fission the founder group factions acquired the structure of a onemale group. The filial factions consisted of both mature males and females and occupied, at least temporarily, a part of, or an area adjacent to, the founder group. During fission, the amount of aggressive interactions between the two mature males increased. However, the majority of agonistic interactions involved ritualized threat and intimidation behavior without physical aggression. In at least three cases the two mature males involved in the fission had not joined recently but had lived in these groups for three years or more. Although the presence of all male bands and single males in the two study populations indicate that male replacement by invasive takeovers may occur, it is suggested that in Nilgiri langurs, noninvasive fissions are probably another common mechanism for the foundation and maintenance of bisexual one-male groups.  相似文献

Spatial arrangement and social interactions of two sympatric and ecologically similar primate species, Hylobates klossii and Presbytis potenzianai, are described from field observations made between July 1972 and October 1974 on Siberut Island, Indonesia. Gibbon territories and langur home ranges overlap extensively. Because gibbons have the ability to supplant langurs at shared food sources, langurs are at a competitive disadvantage. To avoid or decrease the frequency of hostile interactions with gibbons, langurs locate their core areas on boundaries between adjacent gibbon territories, which permits langurs to retreat across these barriers in response to gibbon movements. Langurs further enhance segregration by leaving their sleeping trees earlier than gibbons, gaining additional feeding time on contested food sources. This form of interspecific spatial organization between gibbons and langurs resembles certain predator-prey spacing systems, where territorial boundaries between adjacent predators serve as sanctuaries for prey populations.  相似文献

Recent molecular studies on langurs of the Indian subcontinent suggest that the widely-distributed and morphologically variable Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus) are polyphyletic with respect to Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs. To further investigate this scenario, we have analyzed additional sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b as well as nuclear protamine P1 genes from these species. The results confirm Hanuman langur polyphyly in the mitochondrial tree and the nuclear markers suggest that the Hanuman langurs share protamine P1 alleles with Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs. We recommend provisional splitting of the so-called Hanuman langurs into three species such that the taxonomy is consistent with their evolutionary relationships.  相似文献

Over 150 sequences of terrestrial movement were timed and measured in the toque macaque, the gray langur, and the purple-faced langur to determine the relation between velocity, gait, and psychosocial context. Species differences were found in mean velocity, “favored” gait, and surface preference. All three species used the walk and the gallop at the slowest and fastest speeds respectively. The macaques and gray langurs walked frequently, but the purple-faced langurs were never seen to do so. At intermediate speeds, the macaques used either the “fast” walk or the “slow” gallop, whereas the gray langurs used irregular patterns of walk-gallop-walk-gallop. The purple-faced langurs were faster (about 20 fps) and less variable than the other species, regardless of distance. These data suggest that motor expression varies among the Cercopithecoid monkeys: the correlation between locomotion and anatomy is not as close as it is among wholly terrestrial or arboreal forms; slowness in the macaque is an expression of social confidence, not of biomechanical inability; high speed in the purple-faced langur is due to psychosocial factors rather than to “terrestrial” adaptability.  相似文献

An intensive study of the Indian langur monkey (Presbytis entellus) reveals an interplay between biological and social processes. This study which involved captive animals and over 1,500 observation hours suggests that grooming behavior alone cannot be used to measure status differences between the sexes, nor as a means to understand how pathogens carried by ecto-parasites are controlled. It is shown that the type of grooming exhibited in an interactional setting and the region of the body presented by one animal to another for grooming is often determined by the immediate social events and by the nature of the relationship existing between the participants. For these Colobine langur monkeys grooming behavior not only facilitates integration but it also enables an animal to manipulate a tense situation into a peaceful one. Without reference to many of the other patterns of behavior which only relatively, not absolutely differentiate age and sex classes, grooming behavior cannot be entirely understood.  相似文献

According to ecological theory, the concept of niche differentiation is essential to our understanding of how sympatric species can limit competition over resources. We here examine ecological niche differentiation in 2 sympatric Asian langurs, Presbytis potenziani and Simias concolor, both endemic to the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra. We collected data (home range size, canopy use, activity budgets, diet, and niche breadth and overlap) using GPS and scan/focal animal sampling methods on 2 groups of Presbytis potenziani and 3 groups of Simias concolor living in a mixed primary rain forest in northern Siberut. Results show that home ranges of the 2 species overlapped completely and that the home range size of Presbytis potenziani was ca. 4 times larger than that of Simias concolor. Lower canopy levels (<20 m) were used more often by Simias concolor, whereas Presbytis potenziani preferred the canopy >20 m. Apart from foraging and other activities, there was little difference in overall activity budgets of the 2 species. Regarding diet, although 60% of all food species examined were used by both langur species, they shared only 3 of the 10 most commonly eaten species. Presbytis potenziani fed more selectively on fruits, whereas Simias concolor fed predominantly on leaves. Levin’s niche breadth indices revealed that the diet of Simias concolor is more general (0.34) than that of Presbytis potenziani (0.22). Based on a Pianka index of 0.32, we conclude that there is a relatively small food niche overlap between the 2 colobine species and that diet represents an important mechanism enabling their coexistence.  相似文献

Numerous morphology-based classification schemes have been proposed for langurs and leaf monkeys of South Asia but there is very little agreement between them. An incorrect classification scheme when used as a basis for biogeographic studies can support erroneous hypotheses. Further, lack of taxonomic resolution will also confound conservation efforts, given that conservation biologists use traditional morphology-based-classification schemes to prioritize species for conservation. Here, I have revisited recent molecular phylogenetic studies done on langurs and leaf monkeys of South Asia. Results from these studies are in turn used to derive a rational and scientific basis for prioritizing species for conservation. Molecular data support the classification of langurs of the Indian subcontinent—Hanuman, Nilgiri and purple-faced langurs—in the genus Semnopithecus, whereas Phayre’s leaf monkey along with other Southeast Asian leaf monkeys form another distinct clade (Trachypithecus). The phylogenetic position of capped and golden langurs remains unresolved. Molecular data suggest that they are closely related to each other but this group might have evolved through past hybridization between Semnopithecus and Trachypithecus. Additionally, genetic data also support the splitting of the so-called Hanuman langurs into at least three species. The scores for taxonomic uniqueness of langurs and leaf monkeys of South Asia were revised using this molecular phylogeny-based classification. According to the revised scores, Phayres leaf monkey and golden langur are priority species for conservation followed by capped and Nilgiri langurs.  相似文献
