The proportion of the total plant radioactivity present in shoots at the end of a 24-hour exposure of the roots to 0.5 milligram per liter 14C-3-amino-2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid (14C-amiben) ranged from 1.4 to 74.3% in 13 species. When roots of 10-day-old wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell., Triumph) and 13-day-old barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli L. Beauv.) plants were treated with 0.5 milligram per liter 14C-amiben for 12 or 24 hours, barnyard grass shoots contained at least eight times more of the total plant radioactivity than did wheat shoots. In similar experiments with 14C-2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamine)-s-triazine (14C-atrazine), there were no differences in translocation between these two species.  相似文献

Aims

The possible involvement of the chemical-mediated interaction in allelopathy between rice and barnyard grass was investigated.

Methods

Effcts of rice seedlings and rice root exudate on the alleloapthic activity of barnyard grass were determined and a key compound invovled in the allelopathic interaction between rice and barnyard grass was isolated.

Results

Allelopathic activity of barnyard grass was increased by the presence of rice seedlings. Rice root exudates also elevated the allelopahtic activity of barnyard grass. A key compound, which increased the allelopathic activity of barnyard grass, in the rice root exudates was isolated and determined as momilactone B. Momilactone B increased the allelopathic activity of barnyard grass at concentrations greater than 3 μM, and increasing the momilactone B concentration increased the activity.

Conclusions

Momilactone B is known to act as a potent rice allelochemical and to possess strong growth inhibitory activity against barnyard grass. The present research suggests that barnyard grass may response to the presence of neighboring rice by sensing momilactone B in rice root exudates and increase allelopathic activity. Thus, momilactone B may not only act as a rice allelochemical but also play an important role in rice-induced allelopathy of barnyard grass. The induced-allelopathy may provide a competitive advantage for barnyard grass through the growth inhibition of competing plant species including rice. Barnyard grass allelopathy may be one of the inducible defense mechanisms by chemical-mediated plant interaction between rice and barnyard grass. Rice allelopathy was also reported to be increased by the presence of barnyard grass through increasing production and secretion of momilactone B into surrounding environments. During the evolutional process, rice and barnyard grass may have developed the chemical cross talk to activate the defense mechanisms against some biotic stress conditions by detection of certain key compounds.  相似文献

A novel lipid transfer protein called Ec-LTP was isolated from resting caryopsis of weed barnyard grass Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv.; its molecular weight, amino acid content and N-terminal amino acid sequence were determined. Ec-LTP was a 9150 D protein, containing eight cysteine residues, which formed four disulfide bonds. The isolated protein could significantly inhibit the development of pathogenic fungi Phytophthora infestans and Helminthosporium sativum, causing the late blight of potato and tomato and the root rot of herbs, respectively.  相似文献

Atmospheric CO2 enrichment may impact arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) development and function, which could have subsequent effects on host plant species interactions by differentially affecting plant nutrient acquisition. However, direct evidence illustrating this scenario is limited. We examined how elevated CO2 affects plant growth and whether mycorrhizae mediate interactions between C4 barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv.) and C3 upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in a low nutrient soil. The monocultures and combinations with or without mycorrhizal inoculation were grown at ambient (400 ± 20 μmol mol?1) and elevated CO2 (700 ± 20 μmol mol?1) levels. The 15N isotope tracer was introduced to quantify the mycorrhizally mediated N acquisition of plants. Elevated CO2 stimulated the growth of C3 upland rice but not that of C4 barnyard grass under monoculture. Elevated CO2 also increased mycorrhizal colonization of C4 barnyard grass but did not affect mycorrhizal colonization of C3 upland rice. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased the shoot biomass ratio of C4 barnyard grass to C3 upland rice under both CO2 concentrations but had a greater impact under the elevated than ambient CO2 level. Mycorrhizae decreased relative interaction index (RII) of C3 plants under both ambient and elevated CO2, but mycorrhizae increased RII of C4 plants only under elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and mycorrhizal inoculation enhanced 15N and total N and P uptake of C4 barnyard grass in mixture but had no effects on N and P acquisition of C3 upland rice, thus altering the distribution of N and P between the species in mixture. These results implied that CO2 stimulation of mycorrhizae and their nutrient acquisition may impact competitive interaction of C4 barnyard grass and C3 upland rice under future CO2 scenarios.

Tinospora tuberculata Beumee has been used widely as a folk medicine and several bioactive compounds have been isolated. However, no herbicidal compound has been reported in this species. Therefore, we investigated the presence of phytotoxins in T. tuberculata. The aqueous methanol extracts of T. tuberculata inhibited the growth of roots and shoots of cress (Lepidum sativum L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.). The extract was then purified by several chromatographic runs with monitoring the inhibitory activity and the main phytotoxic substance was isolated. The chemical structure of the compound was determined by spectral data as syringin (4-[(1E)-3-Hydroxyprop-1-en-1-yl]-2,6-dimethoxyphenyl β-d-glucopyranoside). It inhibited the root and shoot growth of all test plant species at concentrations >10 µM. The concentrations required for 50 % inhibition of root and shoot growth of cress and lettuce ranged from 78.2 to 412 μM, and that of timothy and barnyard grass renged from 9.8 to 73.2 µM. Effectiveness of syringin on monocotyledonous (timothy and barnyard grass) plants was greater than that on dicotyledonous (cress and lettuce) plants. These results suggest that syringin may contribute to the allelopathic effect caused by the T. tuberculata extract.  相似文献

When watermelon seeds were cultured in a Petri dish together with amaranth, barnyard grass, cockscomb, lettuce or tomato seeds, the shoot growth of amaranth and cockscomb was markedly promoted, whereas the shoot growth of lettuce and tomato was inhibited. The shoot growth of barnyard grass was not affected. These results suggest that plant-selective allelopathic substance(s) affecting the shoot growth of other plant seedlings were exuded from watermelon seeds. An allelopathic substance was isolated from the exudates of germinating watermelon seeds and identified as vanillic acid by its spectral analysis and Rf value on TLC. Vanillic acid promoted the shoot growth of cockscomb at the concentrations of 300 to 10 mg/l and that of amaranth at the concentrations of 30 to 3 mg/l, although the shoot growth of amaranth was inhibited by 300 mg/l of vanillic acid. The shoot growth of lettuce and tomato was inhibited at the concentrations higher than 30 mg/l by vanillic acid. However, the shoot growth of barnyard grass was not affected at the concentrations used. All these results suggest that vanillic acid may play as a major component of allelopathic substance(s), which shows plant-selective activity, in the exudates of germinating watermelon seeds.  相似文献

Organic agriculture emphasized using of biologically originated herbicides and phytotoxic substances are being considered as a replacement to chemical herbicides. Marsilea crenata is an aquatic perennial fern distributed in the South-East Asian countries and is well known for various biological properties. However, to date, there has been no report that addresses the phytotoxicity of Marsilea crenata. Therefore, we explored phytotoxic properties and phytotoxic substances from Marsilea crenata. An aqueous methanol extracts of Marsilea crenata showed inhibition on the seedling growth of cress, lettuce, alfalfa, barnyard grass, Italian ryegrass, and foxtail fescue. Inhibition increased with increasing extract concentration. The extract was purified by several chromatographic steps and two phytotoxic substances were isolated and identified by spectroscopic analysis as loliolide and isololiolide. At the concentration of 30 μM, loliolide and isololiolide inhibited seedling growth of cress and barnyard grass by 41.3 to 51.1%, and 58.15 to 87.5% of control seedlings, respectively. The concentrations required for 50% inhibition of cress and barnyard grass seedlings ranged from 32.1 to 128.5 μM for loliolide, 37.0 to 176.2 μM for isololiolide. These results suggest these compounds may be responsible for phytotoxic effects of Marsilea crenata extract and could be an important part of organic agriculture.  相似文献

An isolate of Exserohilum longirostratum obtained from Rottboelia cochinchinensis in Malaysia was highly pathogenic to barnyardgrass (Echinocloa crus-galli,) a serious weed in rice fields in Malaysia. In glasshouse trials, high levels of barnyardgrass control were achieved when E. longirostratum was applied as a conidial concentration at 105 conidia/mL. This conidial concentration may not be sufficient for field use; therefore, a mini plot trial was carried out to assess the bioherbicidal potential of the fungus and the efficacy of different inoculum types under field conditions. Excellent barnyard grass disease as indicated by Area Under Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) was achieved with mycelium (AUDPC = 583.8 unit2); mycelium + pretichlaclor (AUDPC = 610.4 unit2) and conidia alone (AUDPC = 468.3 unit2) compared to conidia + pretichlaclor (AUDPC = 395.8 unit2). Although conidia caused lower disease severity on barnyard grass compared to mycelium, this inoculum equally reduced the competition from barnyard grass as indicated by lower mean dry weight and fewer barnyard grass tiller numbers. Positive correlations between AUDPC of rice and its tiller number and AUDPC of rice and its dry weight were recorded while negative correlations were observed for the AUDPC of barnyard grass and its tiller number and AUDPC of barnyard grass and its dry weight. These findings confirmed that E. longirostratum applied either in the form of conidia or mycelium was effective against barnyard grass under field conditions.  相似文献

Salicylic acid (SA), which is known as a signal molecule in the induction of defense mechanisms in plants, could be a promising compound for the reduction of stress sensitivity. The aim of the present work was to investigate the distribution of SA in young pea (Pisum sativum L.) seedlings grown from seeds soaked in 3H-labeled SA solution before sowing, and to study the physiological changes induced by this seed treatment. The most pronounced changes in SA levels occurred in the epicotyl and the seeds. Radioactivity was detected only in the bound form of SA, the majority of which was localized in the seeds, and only a very low level of radioactivity was detected in the epicotyl. SA pre-treatment increased the expression of the chorismate synthase and isochorismate synthase genes in the epicotyl. Pre-soaking the seeds in SA increased the activities of some antioxidant enzymes, namely ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11) and guaiacol peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) and the level of ortho-hydroxycinnamic acid, but decreased the level of polyamines. These results suggest that the increased level of free and bound SA detected in plants growing from seeds soaked in SA solution before sowing is the product of de novo synthesis, rather than having been taken up and mobilized by the plants.  相似文献

The allelopathy of a serious weed, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli L.), was investigated. Root exudates of young barnyard grass showed allelopathic effects and plant-selective activity and inhibited root elongation of all plants tested. With respect to shoot growth, the exudates did not show inhibition of barnyard grass only. The allelopathic substance was isolated and identified as p-hydroxymandelic acid by NMR. p-Hydroxymandelic acid strongly inhibited shoot growth and root elongation of all plants tested. The effects of three congeners of p-hydroxymandelic acid were tested on rice shoot growth. In the biological activity exhibited in rice, shoot growth was related to the hydroxyl groups. A white, compact embryogenic tissue was obtained from young inflorescence segments ofEchinochloa crusgalli (barnyard grass) cultured on Murashige and Skoog's medium containing various concentrations and combinations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 6-benzylaminopurine. Histological and scanning electron microscopic studies revealed that the white compact callus contained embryoids in various stages of development. Typical embryoids were bipolar and possessed scutella, coleoptiles and coleorhizae. The embryogenic nature of the callus was maintained throughout eight to ten subcultures spanning more than six months. A high frequency of plant regeneration was obtained when the 2,4-D concentration was reduced or 2,4-D was removed from the medium.  相似文献

Barnyard grass-induced rice allelopathy and momilactone B   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Here, we investigated chemical-mediated interaction between crop and weeds. Allelopathic activity of rice seedlings exhibited 5.3-6.3-fold increases when rice and barnyard grass seedlings were grown together, where there may be the competitive interference between rice and barnyard grass for nutrients. Barnyard grass is one of the most noxious weeds in rice cultivation. The momilactone B concentration in rice seedlings incubated with barnyard grass seedlings was 6.9-fold greater than that in rice seedlings incubated independently. Low nutrient growth conditions also increased allelopathic activity and momilactone B concentrations in rice seedlings. However, the increases in the low nutrient-induced allelopathic activity and momilactone B concentration were much lower than those in barnyard grass-induced allelopathic activity and momilactone B concentration. Root exudates of barnyard grass seedlings increased allelopathic activity and momilactone B concentration in rice seedlings at concentrations greater than 30 mg/L of the root exudates, and increasing the exudate concentration increased the activity and momilactone B concentration. Therefore, barnyard grass-induced allelopathic activity of rice seedlings may be caused not only by nutrient competition between two species, but also by components in barnyard grass root exudates. As momilactone B shows strong allelopathic activities, barnyard grass-induced allelopathic activity of rice may be due to the increased concentration of momilactone B in rice seedlings. The present research suggests that rice may respond to the presence of neighboring barnyard grass by sensing the components in barnyard grass root exudates and increasing allelopathic activity by production of elevated concentration of momilactone B. Thus, rice allelopathy may be one of the inducible defense mechanisms by chemical-mediated plant interaction between rice and barnyard grass, and the induced-allelopathy may provide a competitive advantage for rice through suppression of the growth of barnyard grass.  相似文献

Brachypodium distachyon (purple false brome) is a herbaceous species belonging to the grass subfamily Pooideae, which also includes major crops like wheat, barley, oat and rye. The species has been established as experimental model organism for understanding and improving cereal crops and temperate grasses. The complete genome of Bd21, the community standard line of B. distachyon, has been sequenced and protocols for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation have been published. Further improvements to the experimental platform including better evaluation systems for transgenic plants are still needed. Here we describe the growth conditions for Bd21 plants yielding highly responsive immature embryos that can generate embryogenic calli for transformation. A prolonged 20-h photoperiod produced seeds with superior immature embryos. In addition, osmotic treatment of embryogenic calli enhanced the efficiency of transfection by particle bombardment. We generated transgenic plants expressing Arabidopsis thaliana galactinol synthase 2 (AtGolS2) in these experiments. AtGolS2-expressing transgenics displayed significantly improved drought tolerance, increasing with increased expression of AtGolS2. These results demonstrate that AtGolS2 can confer drought tolerance to monocots and confirm that Brachypodium is a useful model to further explore ways to understand and improve major monocot crop species.  相似文献

An organ-specific-growth inhibitory substance was isolated from an aqueous methanol extract of red pine needles and determined by spectral data as 1-mono(16-hydroxyhexadecanoyl)glycerol. This substance inhibited root growth of cress (Lepidium sativum L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv) seedlings at concentrations greater than 0.01 and 0.03???M, respectively. The concentrations required for 50?% growth inhibition on roots of cress and barnyard grass were 0.16 and 3.4???M, respectively. However, the inhibitory activity of the substance on shoots of cress and barnyard grass was very weak. The endogenous concentration of 1-mono(16-hydroxyhexadecanoyl)glycerol in the pine needles was 4.6???mol?kg?1. Two related compounds, 1-monohexadecanoylglycerol and 16-hydroxyhexadecanlic acid had no activity up to 1,000???M on cress roots and shoots. The effectiveness of 1-mono(16-hydroxyhexadecanoyl)glycerol on root growth inhibition and the occurrence of 1-mono(16-hydroxyhexadecanoyl)glycerol in pine needles suggest the substance may play an important role in the allelopathy of red pine. Root-specific-growth-inhibition by the substance may be one of the strategies for red pine to compete with neighboring plants for nutrients and space because root growth of competitive plants may be very important for their whole plant development.  相似文献

Echinochloa (Poaceae) includes two domesticated species,Echinochloa utilis (Japanese barnyard millet) andE. frumentacea (Indian sawa millet) and 20–30 wild species. The two millets are morphologically very variable and overlap in spikelet and inflorescence characteristics. Both species are hexaploids based on x = 9. Cytogenetic studies point to the hexaploid wild speciesE. crusgalli andE. colona as possible progenitors ofE. utilis andE. frumentacea, respectively. The tetraploidE. oryzoides is considered as a possible genome donor to wild and domesticated barnyard millet. Markers from Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA method were used to assess the proposed phylogeny and examine the genetic diversity in both domesticated and wild species. The data were analyzed numerically.Echinochloa utilis andE. frumentacea appear very distinct, but grouped withE. crusgalli andE. colona, respectively. The tetraploidE. oryzoides show strong genetic affinity to theE. utilis—E. crusgalli group. The data are in general agreement with the cytogenetic information; however, some disagreements on the interpretation of some of the cytogenetic information is raised. The variability in DNA markers observed in the domesticated species, particularlyE. frumentacea, points to the feasibility of using RAPD markers in cultivar fingerprinting and breeding programs of these millets.  相似文献

Exposure of germinating seeds of lettuce, barnyard grass and wheat to volatile substances released from pulverised leaves of some Cruciferae species resulted in delay of germination and reduction of overall growth.B. juncea andB. nigra volatiles were the most damaging to all of the tested species. It is suggested that degradation products of glucosinolates occuring in cruciferous plants caused this allelopathic action.  相似文献

Heterodera graminophila n. sp., a member of the H. goettingiana group, is described and illustrated from roots of barnyard grass, Echinochloa colonum (L.) Link, in Baton Rouge, La. This new abullate species, having second-stage larvae with only three lines in the lateral field, is most closely related to H. cyperi Golden, Rau &Cobb, 1962, and H. graminis Stynes, 1971, but differs particularly in having a small, inconspicuous anus without a circum-anal pattern and located about 20% of the cyst length from the vulval cone terminus, and a longer vulval slit averaging 45 μ in length. A key, based on cyst and larval characters, is presented for identification of the 10 Heterodera species in the H. goettingiana group.  相似文献

In 1991–1993, we investigated the incidence of seed dormancy in 25 local populations of barnyard grass, Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.Beauv., in the western Czech Republic. The percentage of germination after 4 months afterripening of dry seeds at 25°C varied between 0.0 and 83.6%. Although there were significant annual differences in the percentage of germination at some localities, typical proportions of dormant seeds persisted over 3 years at field sites where the seed bank was not disturbed. One-way ANOVA (using data from 14 cultivated or abandoned fields) revealed that 73.0% of variance in seed dormancy incidence could be attributed to the effect of locality (P<0.001). Incidence of dormancy was not correlated with mother plant stature (dry above-ground biomass, number of tillers, maximal stem height) nor seed mass. There was a significant correlation (r 2=0.403, P<0.005) between dormancy incidence at natural localities in 1991 and in F1 offspring sown at experimental grounds at Praha-Ruzyn in 1992. The results indicate that heredity is important in maintaining local variation in seed dormancy, probably favoured by the self-pollinating reproduction of barnyard grass.  相似文献
