Previous investigations have demonstrated the importance of predator diet in chemically mediated antipredator behaviour. However, there are few data on responses to life-stage-specific predator diets, which could be important for animals like amphibians that undergo metamorphosis and must respond to different suites of predators at different life-history stages. In laboratory choice tests, we investigated the chemically mediated avoidance response of juvenile western toads, Bufo boreas, to four different chemical stimuli: (1) live conspecific juveniles; (2) live earthworms; (3) snakes fed juvenile conspecifics; and (4) snakes fed larval conspecifics (tadpoles). Juvenile toads avoided chemical cues from snakes that had eaten juvenile conspecifics, but did not respond to the other three stimuli, including chemical cues from snakes fed larval conspecifics. In addition, the response to cues from snakes fed juveniles differed significantly from that of snakes fed larvae. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate the importance of diet in predator avoidance of juvenile anurans and the ability of juvenile toads to distinguish between chemical cues from predators that have consumed larval versus juvenile conspecifics. No significant differences were found in the temperature of the onset of behavioural response spasms and equilibrium loss in Ictalurus punctatus maintained in constant and fluctuating temperatures. The preferred temperature was determined in an aquatic gradient to be 29.0°C and the temperatures avoided were 21.7–34.1°C. The temperature that causes the loss of equilibrium of acclimation at constant or fluctuating temperatures changes the organisms final preferendum and the avoided temperatures were significantly different (p<0.05) if compared with the control group. The behavioural response that should be considered as the critical thermal maximum (CTMax) of I. punctatus is the equilibrium loss that reflects a major deep core reaction.  相似文献

Tadpoles exposed daily to UV-B (290–315 nm) enhanced radiation developed an anomalous, concave curvature of the spine at an early stage of development. They also developed abnormally thick, pigmented corneas. The radiation damage to the dorsal surface of the tadpoles was severe, resulting in epidermal hyperplasia and desquamation. The survival rate was also reduced. Daily exposure to photoreactivating radiation (> 315 nm) following UV-B insult mitigated the potentially lethal damage to the tadpole population.  相似文献

An alarm response in larvae of the western toad, Bufo boreas, was examined in the laboratory. A natural predator, the giant water bug, Lethocerus americanus, while capturing and feeding on a tadpole, can cause sufficient damage for the release of toad alarm substance and subsequent alarm response in prey conspecifics. Larvae increased their activity and avoided the side of the tank that had a predator feeding on a conspecific tadpole in a visually isolated but interconnected container. Larvae did not increase activity or avoid the side of the tank that had a predator feeding on a heterospecific tadpole. Performance of the alarm response in conspecifics increased survivorship. The capture efficiency of predators (naiads of the dragonfly Aeshna umbrosa) hunting larvae that had been exposed to the alarm substance of conspecifics was reduced: predators required more capture attempts per successful attack compared to control tests.  相似文献

In preliminary experiments, salamanders of three species (Desmognathus ochrophaeus, Plethodon cinereus and Plethodon jordani) required 5-11 days to complete metabolic acclimation to a constant warm temperature; the rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) decreased 16-28% during acclimation. Unfed animals of each species underwent cyclic exposure to 5 and 21 degrees C at three different cycle periods (12 hr, 4-5 days, 51 days), or constant exposure to 14 degrees C for 102 days. The experimental treatments significantly affected the VO2 measured at 5, 14, 17.5 and 21 degrees C. The direction and magnitude of the acclimatory effects upon VO2 were inconsistent among species and among experimental temperatures, and resulted in little energy saving. The VO2 during exposure to cyclic temperatures averaged only 83% of that during preliminary experiments, perhaps as a response to starvation.  相似文献

Male and virgin female Aedes taeniorhynchus were maintained on a sugar solution at constant temperatures, at split-temperatures, and at alternating temperatures from immediately after emergence until death in order to study the effect of temperatures on their longevity. Life spans were found to be temperature dependent at constant temperatures of 22, 27, and 32°C, but they were divided into ‘ageing’ and ‘dying’ phases at split-temperatures. The rate of ageing, which was independent of temperatures, was the same in males whether they were transferred from low to high or high to low temperatures. The rate of ageing was the same in females transferred from 22°C or 27 to 32°C, but much longer than expected when transferred from 22 to 27°C. Also, the rate of ageing was the same for females transferred from 32°C to either 22 or 27°C and from 27 to 22°C. The rate of dying was essentially temperature dependent in both males and females with slight temperature compensation occurring in some cases. Life spans were the same in males when alternated between 22?27°C, 27?32°C, and 22?32°C. In females they were same at 27?32°C and 22?32°C, but were much longer than expected at 22?27°C. It is concluded that the threshold theory is confirmed when mosquitoes are maintained at split-temperatures and at alternating temperatures in their optimum range of temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract The diversity of bacterial communities isolated from Antarctic lake sediment in chemostats under constant low temperature (8°C) or diurnally fluctuating temperature (1°C to 16°C) was examined. The median optimum temperature for growth of the freshwater bacteria isolated from the fluctuation chemostat was significantly lower ( P < 1%) than that for those from the constant temperature chemostat. The diversity of the enriched bacterial community isolated in the chemostat culture subjected to short-term temperature fluctuations was greater than that enriched under constant temperature. At least 4 different groups of bacteria, that occupied separate 'temperature niches', were isolated from the fluctuating chemostat compared to only one group isolated from the stable chemostat. Furthermore, a pseudomonad from the fluctuating chemostat was shown to out-compete another pseudomonad from the stable chemostat when both were subjected to the fluctuating temperature regime. However, the pseudomonad of constant (8°C) temperature origin out-competed that isolated under fluctuating conditions when subjected to a stable temperature regime.  相似文献

Temperature fluctuations may influence the behaviour of insects. Frankliniella occidentalis and Thrips hawaiiensis are sympatric pests on flower and vegetable host plants in China. This study evaluated the influence of constant (23.0°C) and fluctuating temperatures (average of 23.0°C) on the population development of these two species. The results showed that both of these pests showed faster development and higher fecundity at a constant temperature than at fluctuating temperatures when fed on Rosa rugosa flowers, and F. occidentalis showed faster development and higher fecundity than T. hawaiiensis under both conditions. Under the constant and fluctuating temperatures, the development times from egg to adult were 9.57 and 10.62 day for F. occidentalis and 10.71 and 11.82 day for T. hawaiiensis, respectively. The total numbers of first instar nymph produced were 103.08 and 86.32 by F. occidentalis, 86.96 and 73.32 by T. hawaiiensis, under the constant and fluctuating temperatures, respectively, and a higher intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) (0.173 and 0.160) and R0 (46.31 and 36.86) were obtained in F. occidentalis compared with T. hawaiiensis (rm for 0.154 and 0.141 and R0 for 34.46 and 27.81, respectively). Our results indicate that the constant temperature had a positive effect on the population development of both F. occidentalis and T. hawaiiensis. Furthermore, F. occidentalis showed a stronger adaptability over T. hawaiiensis at both constant and fluctuating temperatures, according to its faster development and higher fecundity. These results may contribute to the better understanding of the biology of different thrip species, especially the interspecific competition between invasive and native thrips under the changing environment. These findings also provide basic data for the thrip pests control by using fluctuating temperatures.  相似文献

Growth of largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides , was tested under constant (15° C, 29° C) and cyclic (18 h at 15°C, 6 h at 29° C) temperature conditions. Six groups of 10 fish each were tested; one group under each constant condition, and four groups in the thermocycles. The four latter groups differed in the timing of their feeding; one group each was fed at the start and middle of the warm and cool periods, respectively. All groups were fed to near-satiation. The fish fed at the start of the warm cycle and start cool group grew most rapidly, followed by the constant warm, mid warm, mid cool, and constant cool groups. These data were evaluated in relation to vertical migrations of fish to test the physiological enhancements that may be important to vertical migrations. Apparently thermocycles allow more rapid consumption of food than constant cool conditions and lower metabolic rates than constant warm conditions, which allows some fish to grow more rapidly under thermocycles than under constant conditions at either extreme of the cycle. However, the timing of feeding in relation to temperature in the thermocycle is important in the degree of growth enhancement.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption and body temperature of active and resting honeybees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We measured the energy turnover (oxygen consumption) of honeybees (Apis mellifera carnica), which were free to move within Warburg vessels. Oxygen consumption of active bees varied widely depending on ambient temperature and level of activity, but did not differ between foragers (>18 d) and middle-aged hive bees (7-10 d). In highly active bees, which were in an endothermic state ready for flight, it decreased almost linearly, from a maximum of 131.4 microl O(2) min(-1) at 15 degrees C ambient temperature to 81.1 microl min(-1) at 25 degrees C, and reached a minimum of 29.9 microl min(-1) at 40 degrees C. In bees with low activity, it decreased from 89.3 microl O(2) min(-1) at 15 degrees C to 47.9 microl min(-1) at 25 degrees C and 14.7 microl min(-1) at 40 degrees C. Thermographic measurements of body temperature showed that with increasing activity, the bees invested more energy to regulate the thorax temperature at increasingly higher levels (38.8-41.2 degrees C in highly active bees) and were more accurate. Resting metabolism was determined in young bees of 1-7 h age, which are not yet capable of endothermic heat production with their flight muscles. Their energy turnover increased from 0.21 microl O(2) min(-1) at 10 degrees C to 0.38 microl min(-1) at 15 degrees C, 1.12 microl min(-1) at 25 degrees C, and 3.03 microl min(-1) at 40 degrees C. At 15, 25 and 40 degrees C, this was 343, 73 and 10 times below the values of the highly active bees, respectively. The Q(10) value of the resting bees, however, was not constant but varied in a U-shaped manner with ambient temperature. It decreased from 4.24 in the temperature range 11-21 degrees C to 1.35 in the range 21-31 degrees C, and increased again to 2.49 in the range 30-40 degrees C. We conclude that attempts to describe the temperature dependence of the resting metabolism of honeybees by Q(10) values can lead to considerable errors if the measurements are performed at only two temperatures. An acceptable approximation can be derived by calculation of an interpolated Q(10) according to the exponential function (V(O(2))=0.151 x 1.0784(T(a))) (interpolated Q(10)=2.12).  相似文献

For some anuran species, synchronous metamorphosis may function as an antipredator adaptation by swamping predators during the period of transformation. We examined the levels of synchrony of emergence from the water of metamorphosing western toads (Bufo boreas) in the presence and absence of a live snake predator, the common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) in a laboratory experiment. To compare between the treatments, we measured the time to emergence from the water, the number of metamorphs emerging together, and the level of aggregation (before and during emergence) of the toads in each treatment. There was a difference between the treatments when all three factors were considered. We attributed these differences to a behavioral response in which B. boreas emerged sooner in the presence of the predator, regardless of whether individual toads had reached the point at which they were physically better suited to the terrestrial environment than the larval environment.  相似文献

Whole body Co60 gamma radiation induced changes in lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, pyruvate, lactate content and rate of oxygen (O2) consumption in a tropical hibernating anuran (Bufo melanostictus). In 3.5 and 7 Gy treated groups, a significant increase in LDH activity and lactate/pyruvate ratio was observed, whereas a significant decrease in O2 consumption rate was observed in treated animals on post-irradiation day (PID) 1, 5 and 10. Increase in LDH activity was observed on PID-1 in both the treated groups, reached to a peak on PID-5 in 7 Gy treated group and then declined on PID-10.  相似文献

The goals of this study were to test the effects of exogenous hormones and hibernation on breeding behavior and gamete release by boreal toads (Bufo boreas boreas). Each year, a subset of 77 toads was hibernated and then paired with hibernated or nonhibernated mates and treated with luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), or left untreated. Amplexus and egg and sperm production were recorded. At 1 yr of age, only 19% of pairs exhibited amplexus, and no sperm or eggs were produced. At 2 and 3 yr of age, most male toads treated with LHRHa exhibited amplexus (56.9% and 100%, respectively). Among 2-yr-old males, amplexus was more prevalent (P < 0.05) in those that were hibernated than in those that were nonhibernated (54.0% and 33.3%, respectively), but most males in each group (93.3% and 75%, respectively) produced sperm in response to LHRHa treatment. Only one 2-yr-old and two 3-yr-old females produced eggs. At 4 yr of age, eight females produced eggs, but two died from egg retention. More nonhibernated than hibernated females developed eggs (7 of 10 vs. 1 of 10, P < 0.05). Mean (±SD) weight of female toads producing eggs (58.9 ± 11.9 g) was greater (P < 0.05) than that of nonproducing females (43.6 ± 7.0 g). Similarly, four of seven nonhibernated females (58.8 ± 8.3 g) produced eggs at 5 yr of age. All eggs were produced by females treated once with LHRHa. Number of eggs per female varied (141 to 3307), and development to tadpoles was low (0 to 36.5%), although tadpoles did become toadlets. In conclusion, male and female boreal toads matured at 2 and 4 yr of age, respectively, and heavier females were more likely to produce eggs. To enhance breeding success, males should be hibernated and treated with LHRHa. In contrast, female productivity was enhanced by improving their body condition instead of subjecting them to hibernation prior to LHRHa treatment.  相似文献

Toads, Bufo marinus, allowed to maintain an ad libitum state of hydration were dehydrated by 10 15% of their standard weight and allowed to rehydrate from either deionized water or from 10 or 50 mmol l(-1) NaCl solutions. Toads rehydrating from the dilute salt solutions recovered a larger fraction of their standard weight than did toads rehydrating from deionized water despite there being a reduced osmotic gradient. Amiloride did not reduce water gain from these solutions. Water uptake from 100 mmol l(-1) sucrose and 50 mmol l(-1) Na gluconate was reduced relative to deionized water by a fraction predicted from the osmotic gradient. Thus, the presence of both Na+ and Cl- are required for the augmentation of water gain from dilute salt solutions. Toads allowed to rehydrate from 120 mmol l(-1) NaCl for 180 min recovered nearly as much water as toads rehydrating from deionized water for 120 min and the lymph osmolality was not reduced relative to the dehydrated condition. The recovery of water from the salt solution was greater than that predicted from the reduced osmotic gradient and amiloride partially inhibited the rehydration from 120 mmol l(-1) NaCl. Solute coupled water transport can therefore be demonstrated in living animals but only from a NaCl solution that is nearly isoosmotic with the lymph. The mechanism for enhanced water gain from dilute salt solutions remains unresolved.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of a freshwater shrimp Caridina fernandoi is measured at 28°C in three levels (viz) the standard (the minimum level compatible with life), the active (the maximum possible under forced activity) and the routine when the organisms are spontaneously active. The measurement was made both when oxygen partial pressure was not and was limiting oxygen uptake by the organism. New techniques are described for these measurements.  相似文献
