Eurygnathohippus feibeli is a small African species of hipparionine horse that is known from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Libya from the latest Miocene to the early Pliocene. It is characterized by generally primitive and moderately hypsodont maxillary cheek teeth but advanced, elongate distal limb elements. This study focused on developing our understanding of the evolution of paleodiet in the E. feibeli (sensu lato) clade, based on two different methods of analyzing tooth mesowear on upper molars from Lothagam, Kenya, and localities in the Middle Awash, Ethiopia. When tooth cusp shape—as described by two variables for paleodietary reconstruction—was considered, all of the studied samples clustered together with recent species that feed on graze, with the majority clustering together with less extreme grazers like waterbuck and sable antelope and a minority presenting the greatest similarity to extreme grazers such as tsessebe and white rhino. The mesowear method involving a univariate standard reveals scores that compare best with values of recent grazing and some mixed-feeding ungulates, suggesting a similar dietary range within the E. feibeli lineage, and which show a modest trend over time from E. feibeli to E. aff. feibeli towards lower and blunter cusps. While older populations of E. feibeli sensu strictu must have included more browse in their diet, younger populations increasingly preferred graze. The E. feibeli sample may represent an intermediate step within a likely general African hipparionine dietary trend that evolved from more mixed feeding towards extreme grazing through the late Miocene–Pleistocene interval. Some results indicate parallels in the dietary adaptation of North American and African late Miocene to earliest Pliocene equid faunas.  相似文献

The arrival of hipparionine horses in the eastern Mediterranean region around 11 Ma was traditionally thought to mark the simultaneous westward expansion of savanna vegetation across Eurasia. However, recent paleoecological reconstructions based on tooth wear, carbon isotopes, and functional morphology indicate that grasses played a minor role in Late Miocene ecosystems of the eastern Mediterranean, which were more likely dry woodlands or forests. The scarcity of grass macrofossils and pollen in Miocene floras of Europe and Asia Minor has been used to support this interpretation. Based on the combined evidence, it has therefore been suggested that Late Miocene ungulate faunal change in the eastern Mediterranean signals increased aridity and landscape openness, but not necessarily the development of grass-dominated habitats.

To shed new light on the Miocene evolution of eastern Mediterranean ecosystems, we used phytolith assemblages preserved in direct association with faunas as a proxy for paleovegetation structure (grassland vs. forest). We extracted phytoliths and other biogenic silica from sediment samples from well-known Early to Late Miocene ( 20–7 Ma) faunal localities in Greece, Turkey, and Iran. In addition, a Middle Eocene sample from Turkey yielded phytoliths and served as a baseline comparison for vegetation inference.

Phytolith analysis showed that the Middle Eocene assemblage consists of abundant grass phytoliths (grass silica short cells) interpreted as deriving from bambusoid grasses, as well as diverse forest indicator phytoliths from dicotyledonous angiosperms and palms, pointing to the presence of a woodland or forest with abundant bamboos. In contrast, the Miocene assemblages are dominated by diverse silica short cells typical of pooid open-habitat grasses. Forest indicator phytoliths are also present, but are rare in the Late Miocene (9–7 Ma) assemblages. Our analysis of the Miocene grass community composition is consistent with evidence from stable carbon isotopes from paleosols and ungulate tooth enamel, showing that C4 grasses were rare in the Mediterranean throughout the Miocene. These data indicate that relatively open habitats had become common in Turkey and surrounding areas by at least the Early Miocene ( 20 Ma), > 7 million years before hipparionine horses reached Europe and arid conditions ensued, as judged by faunal data.  相似文献

近年来在青海柴达木盆地中新世地层内新发现的犀科化石 ,经研究有 3属 3种 ,即Ac erorhinustsaidamensis,Hispanotheriummatritense和Dicerorhinusringstromi,其中后两个种是在这一地区的初次报道。新材料虽较破碎 ,但其发现扩大了H .matritense和D .ringstromi的地理分布范围。更重要的是 ,柴达木动物群原来被确定为晚中新世早期 ,其主要依据是安琪马动物群的残余分子与三趾马动物群共生 ,而此次的发现证明这一地区确实有含H .matritense的中中新世动物群存在。D .ringstromi的发现还证明柴达木盆地有相当于保德动物群时代的晚中新世晚期沉积。  相似文献

The North American grassland biome first appeared around 18 Ma in the mid Miocene. The familiar story of the Neogene evolution of this biome is of the replacement of ungulates (hoofed mammals) having a primarily browsing diet by the more derived grazing ungulates. However, new data show a more complicated pattern of faunal succession. There was a maximum taxonomic diversity of ungulates at 16–14 Ma, including a large number of grazers, and the subsequent decline in overall diversity was largely due to the decline of the browsers, with little corresponding increase in the grazers. Additionally the mid Miocene faunas (∼18–12 Ma) contained a much greater number of browsers than any comparable present-day habitat. We discuss possible explanations for these non-analogous grassland faunas, including the possibility that the primary productivity of the vegetation was greater in the early to middle Miocene than it is today. One possible explanation for increased primary productivity is higher Miocene levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide than in the present day. The proposed difference in vegetational productivity also may explain why horses radiated as the main grazers in North America, in contrast to the radiation of antelope in the Plio–Pleistocene African grasslands.  相似文献

Mandibles and teeth of ungulates have been extensively studied to discern the functional significance of their design. Grazing ungulates have deeper mandibles, longer coronoid processes, flatter incisor arcades, and more hypsodont molars in comparison to browsers. If the functional significance of both mandible and teeth shapes is well‐established, it remains uncertain to what extent mandible shapes are really adapted to grazing, meaning that they evolved either to serve their current biological function or just as a structural requirement to accommodate higher crowned molars. Here, we address this question by studying the contribution of phylogeny, hypsodonty, and body size to mandibular shape variation. The mandible shape appeared to be significantly influenced by hypsodonty but not by body size. Interestingly, hypsodonty‐related changes influenced the tooth row in artiodactyls and perissodactyls significantly but in the opposite directions, which is ultimately related to their different digestive strategies. Yet, we obtained a strong phylogenetic effect in perissodactyls, suggesting that their mandible shape should be strongly inherited. The strength of this effect was not significant within artiodactyls (where hypsodonty explained much more variance in mandible shape). Digestive strategy is deemed to interplay with hypsodonty to produce different paths of adaptation to particular diets in ungulates.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Eronen et al. (2010; hereafter EEFJ) observe differences in occlusal morphology, tooth crown height, and mesowear pattern between populations of the Miocene tridactyl equid Anchitherium from Spain and Germany, proposing that Spanish Anchitherium underwent adaptive evolution to local or regional arid conditions. However, these authors do not take into account the actual diversity of Iberian representatives of Anchitherium, or the fact that the Spanish fossils cover a wider temporal and geographical range than those from Germany. For these reasons, we suggest that their subsequent statistical work should be reconsidered.  相似文献

The Maragheh Formation, northwestern Iran,provides a local biostratigraphic base upon which to build a biochronology of hipparionine horses that has potential regional importance in ordering faunas of Vallesian and Turolian age in other areas of the Old World. This, as well as faunal and radiometric analysis of the Maragheh sequence, is compared with those aspects of other districts. The radiometric age of the so-called «Hipparion Datum» is 12 Ma, if not slightly older, and more than one species of «Hipparion» may be associated with it. Based on cranial morphology, hipparionine horses of Vallesian age consist of a single group; faunas of Turolian age contain four hipparionine groups by these criteria. A group composed of Hipparion prostylum and later members appears to be the most useful in compiling a possible biochronology. This group may have had an endemic European rather than allochthonous (American) origin. Based on the various assessments discussed here the following temporal sequence of certain faunal localities is proposed (oldest to youngest): Vallesian-Höwenegg (Germany), Bou Hanifia I (N. Africa) and Hostalets de Pierola (Spain). Early Turolian-Kopran, Lower Maragheh (Iran). Medial Turolian-Mont Luberon (France), Kerjabad or Ketschawa, Middle Maragheh (Iran), Saloniki (Macedonia), Pikermi (Greece), Shol'avand, Upper Maragheh (Iran), Samos (Greece). Our assessment of the age of the Mont Luberon and Samos faunas differs from conventional assignments.  相似文献

The Tertiary sediments of northern Pakistan are an exceptional record of terrestrial sedimentation and represent most of Neogene time. Foremost is the Siwalik Group of the Potwar Plateau, for which multiple, superposed fossil levels span ∼18–6 Ma. Well-developed magnetostratigraphic control provides secure dating so that Siwalik fossil horizons may be interpolated into a time scale with resolution to 100,000 years. We describe the geographic setting of the Potwar, give an overview of the temporal distribution of faunas, and discuss changes in paleohabitat and paleoecology with coinciding faunal change, as seen from the Siwalik viewpoint. The long Siwalik biostratigraphy of many successive assemblages with its resolved time scale may be compared directly with other well-dated sequences. Immigrant arrival and timing of faunal change may be traced. The basins of the Iberian Peninsula show somewhat different timing of introduction of hipparionine horses, and faunal turnover in the Siwaliks clearly precedes the Vallesian crisis in Spain. In contrast to the increasingly seasonal precipitation of the late Miocene Potwar, the paleohabitat of coeval North China appears to have been moist and equable, with high diversity faunas. Continued development and comparison of resolved Neogene records allow increasing resolution of the patterns of faunal change on regional to global levels.  相似文献

Voles (Microtinae) are among the smallest of mammals which feed extensively on plant leaf material. They achieve higher digestive efficiencies than large ungulates, and this study considers the role that dentition may play in grinding food into small particles, so assisting efficient digestion. Bank ( Clethrionomys glareolus) and field voles ( Microtus agrestis) were found to chew their food into far smaller particles than ungulates, field voles producing smaller particle sizes than bank voles. Scanning electron micrographs showed differences in tooth wear patterns between species, and in bank voles a change in diet led to changes in tooth wear and to changes in the efficiency with which food was processed. Field voles have a pore structure on the occlusal surface of the molar teeth which could play an important role because when the teeth act antagonistically these pores could grate fragments of plant leaves into very small particles and hence enable the animals to achieve high digestive efficiencies.  相似文献

尽管中国发现的中新羚(偶蹄目,牛科,蓝牛族)化石较少,但由于其重要的生物年代学意义而备受重视,被作为与欧洲Vallesian期动物群对比的重要分子。描述了新近在陕西府谷喇嘛沟发现的头骨标本。依据下颌骨形态与牙齿特征,将其归入Miotragocerus gregarius (Schlosser,1903)。新发现的材料完善了该种的鉴定特征:中等大小的蓝牛类;角心强烈后倾, 中等分散度,具前后两条棱,横断面呈椭圆形;雄性个体角心前的额骨部分强烈隆升,雌性个体则无明显隆起;脑颅部分成梯形,其最大宽度在角心后,最小宽度在枕骨位置上;基枕骨前后突之间没有沟槽发育;P2与P3具发育且后置的次尖;p4下后尖前后向扩展。对比研究表明,该种较Miotragocerus spectabilis原始,而后者为中国发现的蓝牛类的最后代表且于中新世末期绝灭。对比巴基斯坦以及欧洲的蓝牛,认为中国的Miotragocerus可能与欧洲的种类关系较为密切,而不同于巴基斯坦的Tragoportax。最新的研究资料表明,Miotragocerus在中国主要发现于晚中新世中晚期(Turolian期),可能在8Ma之前从欧洲迁移至东亚,由于剧烈的气候及生态环境的改变于晚中新世末期与Urmiatheriinae等大型牛科化石一起绝灭。  相似文献

本文是猕猴(Macacamulatta)7个亚种130个头骨的牙齿比较研究结果。在22项变量中,有12项表现出明显的性二型,对另外10项不等于22项的单因子方差分析表明,除M_2近中远侧距离(LM_2MDL)外,其余变量在7个亚种之间具有显著性差异。判别分析结果说明,其中6项变量虽对亚种的划分具有显著性贡献,但各亚种间的总判别率仅为32.56%,亦即牙齿结构在猕猴各亚种间的变异较小。6项变量组成的星状图表明,印度指名亚种与中国各亚种的牙齿形态有较大差异。在中国猕猴各亚种间,指名亚种mulatta(China)与福建亚种littoralis和西藏亚种vestita与川西亚种lasiotis表现出较大的相似性。猕猴的牙齿结构随纬度不同呈现出梯度性变化。各亚种间的牙齿差异主要表现在大小或形状方面,这与不同亚种的个体大小相关。  相似文献

A new approach of reconstructing ungulate diet, the mesowear method, was recently introduced by Fortelius and Solounias ([2000] Am Mus Novitat 3301:1-36). Mesowear is based on facet development on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. Restricting mesowear investigation to maxillary cheek teeth would allow mesowear investigation only in assemblages of large numbers of individuals and therefore would generally restrict this method to relatively few assemblages of recent and fossil ungulates. Most of the fossil, subfossil, and recent ungulate osteological assemblages that may be assigned to a single taxon have smaller numbers of individuals. This results in a demand to extend the mesowear method to further tooth positions in order to obtain stable dietary classifications of fossil taxa. The focus of this article is to test if a consistent mesowear classification is obtainable for mandibular as well as for maxillary teeth. For statistical testing, large assemblages of isolated cheek teeth of the Vallesian hipparionine horse Hippotherium primigenium and of the recent zebra Equus burchelli were employed as models. The upper tooth positions P4, M1, M2, and M3 as suggested by Kaiser and Solounias (2003) as the model for the "extended" mesowear method and the lower tooth positions P4-M3 were tested for their consistency in classification of the mesowear variables. We found a considerable shift of the mesowear signature towards the grazing edge of the mesowear continuum in lower cheek teeth. In order to adjust the signal of lower teeth to the signal of the upper teeth, a calibration factor was introduced which allowed incorporation of lower cheek teeth into the same model of mesowear investigation together with upper cheek teeth. We propose that this model is particularly suited for the reconstruction of paleodiets in hypsodont hipparionine and equine equids. We further investigated the functional relation between the mesowear profiles and the distribution of dental tissues along the course of the occlusal contact. We therefore correlated mesowear profiles with enamel distribution profiles and found the mesowear profile to be strongly controlled by the attritional environment encountered by a given apex area. The differential signal observed in cusp apex morphology between upper and lower cheek teeth was found to be more closely related to attrition by the antagonistic tooth than to the distribution of dental tissues in the tooth under consideration. The results suggest a general extension of the mesowear method of paleodiet reconstruction and a basic scenario for the evolution of anisodont dentitions.  相似文献

1. Molar tooth wear is considered an important proximate mechanism driving patterns of senescence in ungulates but few studies have investigated the causes of variation in molar wear or their consequences for reproductive success. 2. In this study, we assessed molar tooth wear at death among red deer Cervus elaphus of known age on the Isle of Rum, Scotland. 3. First molar height showed a decelerating decline with age. In females, the rates of molar wear with age varied with location of home range and individuals experiencing low resource competition showed reduced molar wear. We suggest that this spatial variation in molar wear is related to differences in the availability of high-quality grazing habitat and levels of resource competition. 4. There was no evidence that females with more heavily worn molars had reduced reproductive performance late in life or that first molar height was associated with reproductive senescence.  相似文献

The evolution of increased tooth crown height is considered to be an adaptation for coping with excessive rates of dental wear associated with abrasive herbivorous diets, such as grazing and(or high levels of exogenous grit (e.g. dust, sand, ash). Evolutionary trends in the crown heights of North American ungulates are grossly consistent with a transition from closed forests in the early Eocene to open grasslands in the late Miocene. However, the evolutionary proliferation of hypsodonty (high crowned teeth) in the early and middle Miocene occurs later than the apparent origin of open grassland habitats in North America. The paleoecology of species from the interval between the appearance of grasslands and the evolutionary proliferation of hypsodonty is critical to understanding the role of Cenozoic climate change in mammalian evolution. The paleodiets of late Eocene to middle Miocene oreodonts (Merycoidodontidae) were reconstructed by examining the relative facet development of molars (mesowear). A two-phase diet trend was discovered. Phase 1 suggests either an average reduction in the amount of exogenous grit from the late Eocene to early Oligocene or a decrease in fruit consumption related to the disappearance of more wooded habitats. Phase 2 is a gradual transition from early Oligocene low-abrasion browsing to high abrasion diets similar to mixed feeding and grazing in the Miocene. According to mesowear data, oreodont diets similar to those of modern grazers in terms of abrasion are not seen until the early Miocene (early Hemingfordian land mammal age). The coevolutionary relationship of molar crown height and diet, as represented by mesowear, was examined using phylogenetically independent contrasts. No significant coevolutionary relationship was found. In several instances, diet was found to shift over time despite morphological stasis (i.e. within a single species). These results do not clearly indicate that the overall trend of increasing dietary abrasion imposed sufficient selection to drive crown height evolution in oreodonts. Therefore, direct fossil evidence of dietary abrasion as a causal factor in the evolution of crown height, at least in this clade, is elusive.  相似文献

Abstract: The Laventan Quebrada Honda Fauna of southern Bolivia is one of the best sampled middle Miocene South American faunas. The present study describes the toxodontid, interatheriid and mesotheriid notoungulates from Quebrada Honda and summarizes the present state of knowledge of the fauna. Toxodontid specimens from Quebrada Honda include two isolated molars, one upper and one lower. The upper molar compares favourably with Paratrigodon and may represent a new species, but too little material is known to make an adequate diagnosis. The lower molar may pertain to the same taxon, or to a distinct species that is even more poorly represented. A new species of the interatheriid Miocochilius is described, M. federicoi, on the basis of a partial skull. It differs from M. anomopodus in its significantly smaller size (at least 20 per cent smaller based on linear upper molar dimensions); relatively wider P4 with deeper lingual sulcus; more prominent middle lobes on upper molars; and M3 with deeper lingual sulcus and more prominent metastyle (distal lobe). The generic allocation of this new species is considered tentative, pending a better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among currently recognized species of Miocochilius and Protypotherium. Mesotheriids are represented at Quebrada Honda by a pair of poorly preserved mandibles that are referred to Plesiotypotherium minor, a species previously recorded from slightly older deposits near Cerdas, Bolivia. A newly revised faunal list for Quebrada Honda is compiled that includes 30 species of non‐volant mammals, 27 of which have been identified to at least genus level. This revised faunal list is used to compare Quebrada Honda to other well‐sampled middle–late Miocene faunas (including La Venta, Columbia; Collón‐Curá, Argentina; and Arroyo Chasicó, Argentina) using the Simpson Index of faunal similarity. In order to compensate for inadequately identified specimens (i.e. those not identified to genus level), minimum and maximum values of faunal similarly were estimated using two different sets of assumptions. The analysis indicates that the middle‐latitude Quebrada Honda Fauna is more similar to the slightly older high‐latitude fauna of Collón‐Curá than to the contemporaneous low‐latitude fauna of La Venta, suggesting that isolating mechanisms between the low and middle latitudes were in place during the early and/or middle Miocene. The relative paucity of taxa shared between Quebrada Honda and La Venta, despite their contemporaneity, suggests that the system of South American Land Mammal ‘Ages’ (SALMAs) may not be useful for biocorrelation between low‐latitude faunas and those from elsewhere in South America.  相似文献

Continental gateways occur where mountainous topography interacts with changing climate and sea level to open or close dispersal corridors. The interaction of permeable or impermeable montane barriers with changing or stable climate yields four biogeographic states, each associated with changes in diversification rates and ecological structure of faunas. For example, permeable montane barriers and climatic stability result in low rates of immigration and extinction, elevated endemic speciation, and stable ecological structure. Three examples from the mammalian fossil record test these scenarios. (1) In Miocene faunas of Pakistan, immigration rates peaked and faunal proportions changed during an interval of cooling and open corridors. (2) In Miocene faunas of Spain, elevated extinction and origination rates and changing trophic structure occurred during regional aridification with open corridors. (3) In Quaternary faunas of South Africa, ungulates experienced range reductions and elevated extinction during the transition from glacial to interglacial climates as corridors closed.  相似文献

根据已有的中国晚新近纪哺乳动物化石记录,综合新近研究成果,初步探讨中国晚新近纪哺乳动物群落演变进程及其对于气候与环境变化的响应。结果表明,自中中新世晚期至晚中新世(约13 Ma至7-8 Ma),中国北方哺乳动物群落组成上没有明显的分异;而在其后的晚中新世晚期发生了较为明显的区域性分化,分化为东部地区以适应潮湿的较为封闭的动物群落与西部地区适应干旱的开阔环境的群落,这种分异可能与东亚夏季风的加强密切相关; 青藏高原及其周边地区化石类群的扩散与交流资料也表明由青藏高原隆升而形成的地理阻隔也可能发生在该时期;上新世哺乳动物群落演化表现出对于持续的干旱化气候背景的适应,而晚上新世某些类群的分异与主导地位的确立与该时期气候环境背景的剧烈震荡相一致。由于化石资料的不完整,时段分布的不均一,以及地理分布区域的局限,全面认识中国晚新近纪哺乳动物群落组成以及与环境变化的关系尚有很长的一段历程。  相似文献

The incidence of teeth lost antemortem was investigated in 244 archeologically derived dried skeletal specimens from the Ipiutak and Tigara burials at Point Hope, Alaska, and 83 Koniag Eskimo specimens excavated at Jones Point, Uyak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska. Ipiutak skeletal remains date from approximately 1500 years B.P. and the Tigara remains from 300–400 years B.P. The Kodiak Island sample is undated. Specimens were sexed and aged in five-year groupings using standard techniques. Teeth lost antermortem were identified as having occupied tooth sockets which showed healing of alveolar bone following exfoliation. Numbers of lost teeth were calculated as percentages of total number of tooth sites of each tooth classification for each age, sex, and site subgrouping. Tooth loss was very low in the Kodiak Island sample, with little difference between sexes and no identifiable age trends. The Tigara ramains displayed moderate tooth loss, with strong correlations to increasing age and little differentiation between the sexes. The Ipiutak specimens lost the most teeth antemortem, with notable between-sex differences and strong correlations with increasing age. In all groups loss of anterior teeth was probably due to accident or heavy wear, while loss of posterior teeth was due to heavy wear, periodontal disease, or agenesis.  相似文献

The well preserved anterior upper and lower jaw fragment of an adult specimen of Coloborhynchus robustus (Pterosauria: Ornithocheiridae), SMNK 2302 PAL, allowed investigations of the replacement pattern of the dentition macroscopically and by using CT scans. The quantification of the dentition by Zahnreihen, Z-Spacing, and replacement waves indicates a complex pattern of different replacement stages in which large gaps within the dentition were avoided. The specialized prey-catching apparatus of Coloborhynchus thus could retain its function even following tooth replacement. The replacement process in the specimen took about 2/3 of the total life-time of a tooth, and damaged teeth in the anterior jaw region may have been replaced more rapidly than posterior teeth. The distolingual replacement of the functional teeth delayed the time of their shedding in comparison with the circular resorption present in crocodiles. In contrast to these, the distolingual position of the replacement tooth did not decrease the biomechanical stability of the functional tooth, which can also be observed as a convergence in other thecodont dentitions, e.g., recent carnivore mammals. Teeth were shed when their replacement had reached about 60% of the full-grown height. A comparison of the observed pattern is constricted by the preservation and preparation of other specimens. Unfortunately, no known specimen in public collections reaches the quality of Coloborhynchus robustus, SMNK 2302 PAL, so that comparable patterns in other specimens are not likely to be detected.  相似文献
