The olfactory epithelium and the vomeronasal organ of the Japanese striped snake were examined by lectin histochemistry. Of the 21 lectins used in the study, all lectins except succinylated‐wheat germ agglutinin (s‐WGA) showed similar binding patterns in the vomeronasal receptor cells and the olfactory receptor cells with varying intensities. The binding patterns of s‐WGA varied among individuals in the vomeronasal and olfactory receptor cells, respectively. Four lectins, Bandeiraea simplicifolia lectin‐II (BSL‐II), Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA), Sophora japonica agglutinin (SJA), and Erythrina cristagalli lectin (ECL) stained secretory granules and the organelles in the olfactory supporting cells and did not stain them in the vomeronasal supporting cells. These results suggest that the glycoconjugate moieties are similar in the vomeronasal and olfactory receptor cells of the Japanese striped snake. J. Morphol., 2010. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

A novel serum protein inhibiting specifically the enzymatic activity of the basic phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) from the venom of the Chinese mamushi snake (Agkistrodon blomhoffii siniticus) was purified from a nonvenomous Colubridae snake, Elaphe quadrivirgata. The purified inhibitor was a 150-kDa glycoprotein having a trimeric structure, composed of two homologous 50-kDa subunits. Their amino acid sequences, containing leucine-rich repeats, were typical of the beta-type PLA(2) inhibitor (PLIbeta), previously identified from the serum of A. blomhoffii siniticus. The inhibitor inhibited exclusively group II basic PLA(2)s and did not inhibit other kinds of PLA(2)s. This is the first paper reporting the existence of PLIbeta in a nonvenomous snake. The existence of PLIbeta in the nonvenomous snake reflects that PLIbetas are widely distributed over the snake species and participate commonly in regulating the physiological activities of the unidentified target PLA(2)s.  相似文献

Intermorph differences of thermoregulatory abilities in colour-polymorphic (dimorphic) species have been demonstrated in many ectotherms. Usually, these studies reported slower body warming in pale-coloured morphs than in dark-coloured morphs. Under this circumstance, one way in which pale-coloured individuals can manage their slower body warming is to perform better at lower temperatures than dark-coloured individuals. If this is the case, the former need not necessarily raise their body temperature to the same level as the latter. Based on this scenario, intermorph differences in thermal sensitivity of performance were examined using the melanistic/striped colour-dimorphic snake Elaphe quadrivirgata as a model species. As an indication of performance capability, the crawling speed was measured at several temperatures. Although striped individuals exhibited slower body warming than melanistic individuals under experimental conditions, the former did not exhibit faster crawling speed than the latter at lower temperatures. Shape and position of the performance curve were almost identical between melanistic and striped individuals, indicating a highly static nature in thermal sensitivity of crawling. Coupled with the results of field studies, it is suggested that striped individuals manage their slower body warming by efforts of behavioural thermoregulation. The possible significance of ecological performance in the wild was discussed.  相似文献

The extrathyroidal conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine in the snake, Elaphe taeniura, has been determined in vitro. The liver, kidney and pancreas are important organs showing significant 5-deiodinase activity. The pancreas has a higher conversion rate (18.5±3.58 pmol·min-1·mg protein-1) than other vertebrate tissues that have been studied. The 5-deiodinase activity is dependent on substrate (thyroxine) concentration, cofactor, i.e. dithioerythritol concentration, temperature, duration of incubation and pH. It is sensitive to iopanoic acid, propylthiouracil, salicylate and propranolol. It is also indicative that the 5-deiodinase activity increased and decreased, respectively, in snakes with experimentally induced hyper- and hypo-thyroidism. These characteristics suggest that snake 5-deiodinase is similar to that of mammals, probably of type I category.Abbreviations ANOVA analysis of variance - BSA bovine serum albumin - BW body weight - cpm counts per minute - 5D 5-deiodinase - DTE dithioerythritol - EDTA ethylenediamine tetraacetate - IOP iopanoic acid - K m Michaelis-Menten constant - L/D Light/Dark - MW molecular weight - NRS normal rabbit serum - PEG polyethylene glycol - %B percentage of added label found in the pellet - PTU propylthiouracil - RIA radioimmunoassay - rT3 3,5,5-triiodothyronine - SPSS Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - T3 3,5,3-triiodothyronine - T4 thyroxine - TRIS Tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane - Tx thyroidectomized - V max maximum velocity of enzyme reaction  相似文献

Summary A variety of inclusion bodies occur in the mitochondria of several cell types of the snake, Elaphae quadrivirgata. These lie in the mitochondrial matrix or within the space of the cristae. The inclusions in the matrix are as follows: dense homogeneous and fine granular materials, structures with finger-print appearance and with filamentous and/or crystalloid pattern and fine ring-shaped and/or microtubular structures. The inclusions within mitochondrial cristae are glycogen particles, globular materials, and strand-like structures. These inclusions occur not only during the hibernation period of the snake, but also in the arousal period. Furthermore, some inclusions are encountered in fetal tissues. The functional significance of these inclusions is unknown; however, the present study suggests that they are related to the metabolic activity of the cells.  相似文献

In a population of adders (Vipera berus) in Southwest Sweden, melanistic males were heavier than normal coloured males of the same length. Victory in male-male sexual combats was positively related to size. Higher risk of predation in the black morph was inferred from experiments showing a high predator attack rate on models of the black morph. Even the bright colour in newly moulted basking males of the normal morph gives cryptic protection. In females, melanism probably also affects body size and risk of predation by visually searching predators. The thermoregulatory influence of black colour, the reproductive success and the maintenance of two colour morphs in the population are discussed.  相似文献

The spleen of the blue-green snake (Elaphe climacophora) lies at the head of the pancreas and is separated from it by a fibrous capsule. A hilus is not clearly distinguished. Arteries and veins enter or leave the spleen through the capsule, but no collateral relationship is observed between these vessels. Histologically, the spleen consists of the capsule-septal tissue, lymphoid tissue (the white pulp), and a fibrous zone (the perilymphoid fibrous zone: PLFZ) around the lymphoid tissue that includes many small veins. The PLFZ probably represents the involuted red pulp. The border between the white pulp and PLFZ is unclear in routine histological sections due to diffuse infiltration of lymphocytes into the latter region, but the border could be distinguished clearly in silver-impregnated specimens. Arteries enter the spleen, run within the septa, and divide into terminal arteries in the lymphoid tissue that form end branches. There are no ellipsoids around the terminal arteries. The end branches communicate with veins of the PLFZ through transitional vessels within the lymphoid tissue (closed circulation). The veins of the PLFZ anastomose with drainage veins in the capsule. The snake spleen retains the basic histological characteristics of a spleen and is morphologically distinguishable from a lymph node. It may represent an extreme example of a spleen modified by the remodelling of the intrasplenic vasculatures during evolution. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary Video-densitometric DNA measurements of Feulgenstained tissues of 42 day old eggs of the corn snake,Elaphe g. guttata (Columbridae, Serpentes), revealed a basic DNA content of 2C=2.17 pg, with somatic polyploidy in the allantois, the chorioallontois, the yolk sac, and other extraembryonic membranes. The maximum value determined was 128C (in binucleate cells 2×128C) at the distal pole of the egg. This is the first report of somatic polyploidy in a snake, and one of the first in reptiles in general.  相似文献

Arboreality is widespread in multiple lineages of snakes and these habitats are important for foraging, escaping predators, and thermoregulation for many species. However, very little is known about factors influencing the arboreal locomotor abilities of snakes. Arboreal performance was assessed in a semi-arboreal snake (Elaphe guttata) using an artificial perch apparatus. Locomotor velocity, body posture, and balance was measured during movement on three perch diameters (3, 6, 10-cm) at three temperatures (10, 20, 30 degrees C). Velocities attained by E. guttata on perches are much slower than those of terrestrial lateral undulation and swimming and somewhat slower than concertina velocities recorded in other species across the same experimental temperatures. At higher temperatures, faster speeds were associated with a more elongated posture. At lower temperatures, snakes displayed a more looped body posture, but still fell more often than at higher temperatures. Our results suggest that temperature has a large influence on both balance and movement by snakes on perches. Although there were no differences in velocities resulting from perch diameter, snakes fell more often from thicker perches. This differs from arboreal velocities attained by limbed vertebrates, which decrease with decreasing perch diameter, suggesting that snakes have a size-relative advantage over limbed animals, such as lizards, when traversing a network of narrow branches. Future studies investigating arboreal locomotion among snakes that vary both phylogenetically and morphologically are needed to assess the potential benefits of limblessness in complex, three-dimensional environments.  相似文献

Fluorescence histochemistry was used to study the adrenergic innervation of the large arteries and veins at six points along the body of the semiarboreal rat snake Elaphe obsoleta. Apart from the vessels adjacent to the heart, there was a marked contrast in the density of adrenergic innervation of anterior and posterior systemic arteries and veins. The anterior arteries and veins have little adrenergic innervation in contrast to the extremely dense innervation of the arteries and veins posterior to the heart. The innervation pattern is consistent with known physiological adjustments to gravity and suggests a mechanism for regulating dependent blood flow via sympathetic nerves. In comparison to the posterior systemic arteries, parallel segments of pulmonary artery taken from the same body position of Elaphe contained a much sparser innervation by adrenergic nerves. The sparser innervation can be correlated with less gravitational disturbance in the pulmonary artery, which is relatively short in this and in other arboreal snakes.  相似文献

Blood supplying the brain in vertebrates is carried primarily by the carotid vasculature. In most mammals, cerebral blood flow is supplemented by the vertebral arteries, which anastomose with the carotids at the base of the brain. In other tetrapods, cerebral blood is generally believed to be supplied exclusively by the carotid vasculature, and the vertebral arteries are usually described as disappearing into the dorsal musculature between the heart and head. There have been several reports of a vertebral artery connection with the cephalic vasculature in snakes. We measured regional blood flows using fluorescently labeled microspheres and demonstrated that the vertebral artery contributes a small but significant fraction of cerebral blood flow (∼13% of total) in the rat snake Elaphe obsoleta. Vascular casts of the anterior vessels revealed that the vertebral artery connection is indirect, through multiple anastomoses with the inferior spinal artery, which connects with the carotid vasculature near the base of the skull. Using digital subtraction angiography, fluoroscopy, and direct observations of flow in isolated vessels, we confirmed that blood in the inferior spinal artery flows craniad from a point anterior to the vertebral artery connections. Such collateral blood supply could potentially contribute to the maintenance of cerebral circulation during circumstances when craniad blood flow is compromised, e.g., during the gravitational stress of climbing. Two sympatric morphs (type A with a vertebral number of 25 and type B with a vertebral number of 24) of striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex (Bloch & Schneider) were analysed genetically. A part of the 16S–rRNA region of mtDNA was amplified with polymerase chain reaction for 24 specimens, and a restriction enzyme fragment polymorphism showed significant differences between the two types. While all specimens sampled in Ogasawara were identified as type B, about 90% of striped jack in Oita were type A and 10% were type B. Although the spawning areas of these two types are still unknown, significant genetic differences between the two sympatric morphs show that recruitment and migration patterns might differ from each other. The current system suggests the possibility that the juveniles of type B in Oita may migrate from the Ogasawara Islands.  相似文献

Radioactively-labeled microspheres were used to quantify adjustments of regional blood flows in 15 snakes (Elaphe obsoleta) subjected to 45 degrees head-up tilt. Heart rate and peripheral vascular resistance increased during tilt to compensate for the passive drop of pressure at the head. Two snakes failed to regulate blood pressure, but in 13 others arterial pressure increased at midbody (where passive changes in pressure are unexpected due to tilt alone) and arterial pressure at the head averaged 67% of the pretilt value. Tissue blood flow was reduced significantly in visceral organs, posterior skin and posterior skeletal muscle, but was maintained at pretilt levels in brain, heart, lung and anterior tissues. Ventricular systemic output averaged 24 ml/min X kg in horizontal posture and 9.4 ml/min X kg during tilt. Comparable values for pulmonary output were 4 and 6.5 ml/min X kg. Patterns of intraventricular shunting of blood acted to maintain pulmonary flow during tilt. A large right-to-left shunt (mean 76%) was present in horizontal snakes, but the shunted fraction declined during tilt (mean 54%). Left-to-right shunt increased during tilt from 7% to 14%.  相似文献

Summary The innervation of the pulmonary vasculature of the semi-arboreal rat snake,Elaphe obsoleta, was examined with glyoxylic acid-induced catecholamine histochemistry, peptide immunohistochemistry, and in vitro perfusion of the pulmonary vasculature. An adrenergic innervation was present on the pulmonary artery, the smaller pulmonary arteries, the veins draining the lung, and the main pulmonary vein. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like immunoreactive axons were observed on the pulmonary artery and vein, small arteries, and occasionally small veins within the lung parenchyma. A dense plexus of substance P-like immunoreactive (SP-LI) axons was observed on the distal extrinsic pulmonary artery. SP-LI axons were found on the more distal arteries within the lung parenchyma, but not on the veins. The distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide- and SP-LI axons was similar suggesting that the axons are sensory nerves. In the perfused pulmonary vasculature, vagal stimulation caused a predominant vasoconstriction which was abolished by atropine indicating it was cholinergic in nature. A post-stimulus vasodilatation was abolished by bretylium and propranolol indicating it was adrenergic in nature. The responses to nerve stimulation were located in both the extrinsic and intrinsic pulmonary vasculature. No evidence for non-adrenergic, noncholinergic transmission to the vascular smooth muscle was found. The extensive, functional innervation of the main pulmonary artery, as well as the more distal vasculature within the lung, may reflect adaptation to cardiovascular problems imposed by an elongated body and arboreal habits.Abbreviations VIP vasoactive intestinal polypeptide - VIP-LI vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like immunoreactive - SP substance P - SP-LI substance P-like immunoreactive - SOM somatostatin - SOM-LI somatostatin-like immunoreactive - CGRP calcitonin gene-related peptide - CGRP-LI calcitonin gene-related peptide-like immunoreactive - NANC non-adrenergic noncholinergic - PI perfusion inflow  相似文献

Electromyography and cinematography were used to determine the activity of epaxial muscles of colubrid snakes during terrestrial and aquatic lateral undulatory locomotion. In both types of lateral undulation, at a given longitudinal position, segments of three muscles (Mm. semispinalis-spinalis, longissimus dorsi, and iliocostalis) usually show synchronous activity. Muscle activity propagates posteriorly and generally is unilateral. With each muscle, large numbers of adjacent segments (30 to 100) show simultaneous activity. Terrestrial and aquatic undulation differ in two major respects. (1) During terrestrial undulation, muscle activity in a particular region begins when that portion of the body has reached maximal convex flexion and ends when it is maximally concave; this phase relation is uniform along the entire snake. During swimming, however, muscle activity passes posteriorly faster than the wave of vertebral flexion, causing the relation of muscle activity to flexion to change along the length of the snake. (2) In the terrestrial mode, the block of active muscle segments remains approximately constant in size as it passes down the snake, whereas during swimming the number of adjacent active muscle segments increases posteriorly. Despite the fact that Elaphe obsoleta has nearly twice as many body vertebrate as Nerodia fasciata (240 vs. 125), the only difference observed in the swimming of these two species is that a larger number of adjacent muscle segments is simultaneously active in comparable regions of Elaphe obsoleta than in Nerodia fasciata.  相似文献

The yolk splanchnopleure and chorioallantoic membrane of oviparous reptiles transport calcium from the yolk and eggshell to the developing embryo. Among oviparous amniotes, the mechanism of calcium mobilization to embryos has been studied only in domestic fowl, in which the mechanism of calcium transport of the yolk splanchnopleure differs from the chorioallantoic membrane. Transport of calcium is facilitated by calbindin-D(28K) in endodermal cells of the yolk splanchnopleure of chickens but the chorioallantoic membrane does not express calbindin-D(28K). We used immunoblotting to assay for calbindin-D(28K) expression in yolk splanchnopleure and chorioallantoic membrane of the corn snake, Elaphe guttata, to test the hypothesis that the mechanism of calcium transport by extraembryonic membranes of snakes is similar to birds. High calbindin-D(28K) expression was detected in samples of yolk splanchnopleure and chorioallantoic membrane during late embryonic stages. We conclude that calbindin-D(28K) is expressed in these extraembryonic membranes to facilitate transport of calcium and that the mechanism of calcium transport of the chorioallantoic membrane of the corn snake differs from that of the chicken. Further, we conclude that calbindin-D(28K) expression is developmentally regulated and increases during later embryonic stages in the corn snake.  相似文献
