The volatile components of whole-body extracts of males, females and workers were analyzed in four species of Neotropical ants in the formicine genus, Camponotus. The species, C. kaura, C. sexguttatus, C. ramulorum and C. planatus, represent three different subgenera. Volatile mandibular gland components were found only in male extracts in three of the species. In C. ramulorum, volatile components were found in male and female reproductives and workers. 3,4-Dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methylpyran-4-one and octanic acid were found in different sets of three of the species. Methyl 6-methyl salicylate was found in two species and the isocoumarin, mellein, was found in a third species. The significance of the mandibular gland secretion for formicid systematics is discussed.  相似文献

Twenty one species of ticks belonging to five genera of the family Ixodidae (Order Acari, sub-order Ixodida) - Amblyomma, Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma, Ixodes and Rhipicephalus (including the sub-genus Rhipicephalus (Boophilus)) - were collected from 1260 mammals, representing 29 species, 14 families and 6 orders, in four vegetation zones in Ghana during the period 1971-1978. Four other species were collected from humans in 1977. In all, eight species appeared to be new records for Ghana: Amblyomma tholloni Neumann; Dermacentor circumguttatus Neumann; Haemaphysalis houyi Nuttall & Warburton; Ixodes loveridgei Arthur; Ixodes oldi Nuttall; Ixodes vanidicus Schultze; Rhipicephalus complanatus Neumann; Rhipicephalus cuspidatus Neumann. The updated list of tick species in Ghana given here includes 41 species of ixodid ticks and four species of argasid ticks. Most species have been found in neighbouring regions of West Africa but 56 of the 121 different combinations of ixodid tick species and host species found in the collection described here have not apparently been reported before. The new combinations recorded here bring the total number of different combinations of ixodid tick species and mammalian host species now reported in Ghana to 151. The tick species found on wild mammals in Ghana mostly differed from those reported from domestic stock by other authors. The data showed that different tick species occurred in different vegetation zones and that most species displayed a pronounced preference for certain groups of related host species. Some tick species were found in the savanna feeding mainly on large bovids and/or suids; others were found in forests feeding mainly on small bovids, large rodents or small carnivores.  相似文献

A survey in Louisiana of gastrointestinal helminths recovered at necropsy from 117 ponies with minimal exposure to anthelmintics between 1989 and 2000 is compared with a survey conducted 20 yr earlier in the same region. An objective of this study was to determine whether species diversity has been affected by the advent and use of the macrocyclic lactone (ML) parasiticides and by the increased anthelmintic pressure on the helminth species infecting the general equine population. Twenty-six cyathostome species and 8 strongyle species were recovered. Two cyathostome species that were not found before, Cylicostephanus asymetricus and C. bidentatus, and 1 species of large strongyle, Oesophagodontus robustus, were added to the list of species found in Louisiana. All cyathostome and large strongyle species found previously were still present. But prevalences and intensities were significantly reduced for almost all large and small strongyle species. Prevalences and intensities of Oxyuris equi adults and larvae were reduced, whereas the prevalence of Parascaris equorum remained constant. The tapeworm Paranoplocephala mamillana was added to the list of parasite species found in Louisiana. Anoplocephala perfoliata remained the most common cestode. This species was found at the same level of intensity but increased slightly in prevalence. Anoplocephala magna was found less frequently than previously. The overall diversity of species remained reatively unchanged. The reasons for the differences in intensity and prevalence of strongyles between these 2 periods are unknown but might be related to the development and use of the broad-spectrum ML anthelmintics in the intervening period, a difference in the population of equids surveyed, different techniques used to identify the parasites, or differences in numbers of parasites identified (or to all).  相似文献

We assessed woody plant communities in two widely separated forests in the tropical dry forest (TDF) biome of Mexico for evidence of similar patterns of species commonness and rarity. We used belt transects laid out along contour lines (i.e., constant elevation) and stratified across elevation gradients at sites in Jalisco and Oaxaca to sample woody plant species diversity, abundance, relative frequency and basal area. We assembled a combined species list and compared species found in both sites (shared) to species found in only one site, assessing whether the most and least common species at a site tended to be shared or unshared. Of the 8242 individuals sampled, 370 species or morpho‐species were identified, with 222 species recorded at the Jalisco site and 270 at the Oaxaca site—122 (33%) species were shared across sites. Abundance, frequency and basal area of shared species were greater on average than for unshared species, and were positively correlated across sites. A subset of 68 shared species (18%) accounted for over half of all individuals encountered at the two sites. Species in the most common quartile were more likely to be shared than expected by chance, while species in the least common quartile were less likely. A genus‐level analysis found similar patterns. Our findings suggest that the TDF of Pacific coast Mexico shows evidence of widespread dominance by a small subset of species. These findings have potentially important implications for predicting species composition, understanding the role of oligarchic species in ecological processes, and conserving rare species.  相似文献

The effects of autogenic-allogenic status on the species-area relationship and the relationship between geographic distance and intercommunity dissimilarity were investigated in macroparasite communities of the bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus. Rank correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship between pond surface area and species richness of all species collectively and of autogenic species and allogenic species separately. A positive relationship was found for allogenic species, whereas there was no association for all species, nor was there an association when the study was restricted to autogenic species. Mantel tests were used to determine the relationship between geographic distance and community dissimilarity for all species and for autogenic and allogenic species independently. Total community dissimilarity and allogenic dissimilarity were found to be influenced by geographic distance, whereas autogenic dissimilarity was random with regard to interpond distances. These findings serve to illustrate the importance of the autogenic-allogenic dichotomy and demonstrate that dispersal ability can influence commonly observed ecological patterns.  相似文献

Summary Four species of gall-forming sawflies were each frequently found to have clumped distributions among shoots within their willow host plant across four sites and three years. When all species were considered together by clone, year, and site, species showed independence of distribution among shoots two thirds of the time and showed positive covariance one third of the time. When pairs of species were considered separately, but clones were combined within sites and years, 60% of the chi-square tests of association were significant. All but one of the significant tests showed positive associations between pairs of species. The stem galler was positively associated with the leaf folder at all sites in all years, and the petiole galler was positively associated with the stem galler and leaf folder for most year by site combinations. When species paris co-occurred on shoots they were usually found at the same or higher density as when found alone on shoots. Only 2 of 100 tests showed a depressed density of a species when co-occurring on shoots with heterospecifics.All sawfly species were found on shoots that were significantly larger (mean node number) than on shoots without sawflies, and species responded to shoot size variation similarly. Sizes of shoots occupied by heterospecific species combinations were usually significantly larger than shoots with only conspecifics, for all species. These data supported the hypothesis that similar species' responses to within-plant variation would lead to positive rather than negative or random species associations. The data do not support the hypothesis that interspecific competition was important in determining shoot choice or species density.  相似文献

A total of 127 species of stoneflies, dayflies, caddisflies, and chironomids were found in the lakes and small watercourses of the Northern and Pre-Polar Urals. The highest species diversity (78 species) and number were the characteristics of chironomids. Along with widely distributed species, Siberian and Arctic species were revealed in the fauna. The Arctic stonefly Capnia zaicevi Klap and 24 chironomid species were found for the first time on the territory of Komi Republic. Quaking fens and floating forests in the Westbroek Polder, the Netherlands, have seed banks with an estimated mean total seed density of 920 and 690 seeds m-2, respectively. Fifty nine species were found in two or more quaking fens of which 39 were also found in their seed banks. Fifty species were found in two or more floating-forests and 31 of these were also found in their seed banks. The seed banks of fens and forests had 36 species in common. The seed banks of fens and forests were more similar (Spearman rank order correlation coefficients of 0.64 on the basis of percent presence and 0.61 on the basis of mean seed density in the seed bank and mean species cover in the vegetation) than were the seed banks and vegetation of either fens or forests (0.46 and 0.46 for fens; 0.26 and 0.23 for forests).When the tree canopy is removed from a floating forest to try to restore it to a quaking fen, it is predicted that a total of 47 species from the floating-forest understory will persist. Eleven of these species are not present in fens. Fifteen additional species can become established potentially from the forest seed banks. Sixteen species found in fens, however, are predicted to be missing from cleared sites. Of these 16 species, 7 are uncommon aquatic-and fen species.  相似文献

This study compares two stations each sampled at the Øresund (Denmark) and the German coast (western Baltic Sea), with respect to sublittoral Harpacticoida. The associations were found to differ considerably in diversity, species numbers, evenness and also in the species composition. At the two northern stations, mainly polyhaline species were found and they showed the highest species and individual numbers as well as the most even species distribution. At the two southern stations, mainly pleiomesohaline species were found and they were dominated by one species that was very resistant to eutrophication, so that they showed an uneven species distribution, but also had lower individual numbers and thus lower diversity. Some samples at the German coast were found to have an extremely low harpacticoid number, which was attributed to the severe oxygen deficiency that occurred in autumn 2002 in the western Baltic Sea. This can also be considered to be the main reason for the low species diversity of the southern stations.  相似文献

We examined variation in woody fruit size among 362 Australian Eucalyptus species with respect to predictions relating fruit size to fire exposure and rainfall. Predictions for fruit size variation were established that focussed on selection for small or large seeds, given a positive allometric relationship between fruit and seed size within the genus, and on the potential for fruits to protect their valuable seed contents. Comparatively smaller fruits were found in species that continually experience frequent disturbance by fire, while both small and large fruits were found among species subjected to both short and long fire intervals. In the latter case where a broad range of fire intervals is possible, some species have adopted a strategy of producing small seeds that provide superior colonisation ability in disturbed conditions, while other species have adopted a strategy of producing large seeds which are more competitive during longer intervals between disturbance by fire. Only when taxonomic membership at the subgeneric level was accounted for in analyses across all species, did a significant relationship emerge between fruit size and rainfall independently of fire interval and plant height; comparatively larger fruits were found in species experiencing lower average annual rainfall in the subgenera Eucalyptus and Symphyomyrtus. In contrast to previous studies, larger fruits were found only in short species, while small fruits were found in both short and tall species. Many short species have adopted a strategy of protecting their seeds from high fire intensity by producing larger fruit. Since tall species can elevate their fruit far above high fire intensity, they make considerable energy savings by producing smaller fruit. It remains an open question as to why small fruit size occurs in some short species, but we suggest that these species may invest more heavily in vegetative regrowth after fire than in re-establishment by seed.  相似文献

The structural proteins of polyoma virions and capsids were analyzed by isoelectric focusing and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Polyoma virion VP1 was found to be composed of six distinct species which had pI's between pH 6.75 and 5.75. Polyoma capsid VP1 was found to contain four species with pI's between pH 6.60 and 5.75. The different forms of virion and capsid VP1 appeared to be generated by modifications (phosphorylation and acetylation) of the initial translation product. The most basic of the virion VP1 species (pI, pH 6.75) was absent in capsids and was found to be exclusively associated with the viral nucleoprotein complex. Three of the virion VP1 species and three of the capsid VP1 species were found in capsomere preparations enriched for hexon subunits. Two VP1 species were specifically immune precipitated from virions with hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies. These two VP1 species were common to both virions and capsids. Polyoma virions, but not capsids, possessed a single VP1 species which was immune precipitated with neutralizing antibodies. Both virion and capsid VP2 were found to have pI's of approximately pH 5.50. Virion VP3 had a pI of approximately pH 7.00, whereas capsid VP3 had a pI of approximately pH 6.50.  相似文献

The composition of the rumen ciliate fauna in 76 Kafue lechwe inhabiting a limited area in Zambia was surveyed and five genera containing 24 species with 16 formae belonging to the family Ophryoscolecidae were identified. Four new species belonging to Diplodiniinae were recognized and described as Diplodinium lochinvarense n. sp., Diplodinium leche n. sp., Diplodinium zambiense n. sp., and Metadinium ossiculi n. sp. In addition, Ostracodinium gracile form fissilaminatum Dogiel, 1932 was found for the second time and described as Metadinium fissilaminatum n. comb. The species composition was fairly unusual. Seven of the species have been found only in African wild antelopes and these species were found more frequently than cosmopolitan species. There was no evidence of isotrichid species. The average density of ciliates per 1 ml of the rumen fluid was 25.7 x 10(4), and the number of ciliate species per head of host was 10.8.  相似文献

The species composition and distribution of ostracods were investigated at two sites with different pollution levels on the eastern coast of Amurskii Bay within the limits of Vladivostok City. A total of 41 species were found. In all, thirty-eight species (28 of them alive) were found at the first site between Krasnyi and Groznyi capes. Another twenty-seven species were found at a depth of 1.5–3 m in the phytal zone with a diversity of microbiotopes. As the bottom became increasingly silty and the depth increased, the number of species decreased. A total of 25 species (only 15 of them alive) were found at the mouth of the Vtoraya Rechka River, which is heavily polluted by municipal and industrial sewage discharge. No valves of ostracods were found in surface sediments on silts at a depth down to 5.5m. At 4 m, only 2 species were found alive on stones overgrown with Saccharina japonica. At 500 m from a sewage discharge site, few ostracod valves were found that seemed to have died recently. At a distance of over 1 km, an ostracod assemblage typical of the silty substrates of Amurskii Bay was found below a 7 m depth (21 species, 12 of them alive).  相似文献

To detect differences in the information available on freshwater fish species found in Mexican biosphere reserves, the number of species considered in three sources of information: management programmes, Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the scientific literature were compared. Additionally, management actions for the reserves were evaluated. More than 55% of freshwater fish species registered for the reserves were found only in one of the three sources of information, while just 12% was shared among all the three. Fifteen threatened species were registered in GBIF and the scientific literature that were not found in management programmes. Although all the management programmes described conservation actions, none of them gave details about how they would be implemented. Lack of communication among the sources studied, unawareness of the existence of threatened species and the absence of detailed management actions hinder the development of adequate conservation strategies.  相似文献

In vitro pollen germination of five species and two interspecific hybrids from the genus Brassica was tested in four media. Genetically fixed differences in the demands for optimal pollen germination among species were found. The experiments were designed to define optimal content of mineral salts, sugar, and PEG for every investigated species or hybrids. 2008年6~7月间对吉林省白城及松原地区4个大型湖泡中的藻类植物进行了调查,共鉴定藻类植物86个分类单位,包括76种10变种,分别隶属于5门7纲12目20科37属,初步分析了白城及松原地区4个大型湖泡中藻类植物群落的种类组成及生态类型,在该区域出现的大部分藻类属于普生种类,同时出现了一些碱水种类,此外还有少量的污染指示种出现。根据种类组成及分布初步推断,夏季白城、松原地区部分湖泡的藻类植物群落组成主要为硅藻—绿藻类型。  相似文献

The forces involved in the buoyancy of the genus Synodontis are unusually large owing to the well-developed cephalo-nuchal shield possessed by all members of the genus, and the large swim bladder and high levels of body fat needed to counteract this. A new method of determining the quantity of crude lipid in the tissues was developed and tested against a recognized method. Negative correlations were found between the total quantities of fat present and the volumes of the swim bladder for several species. Two species which maintained neutral buoyancy but occupied different ecological niches were found to achieve neutrality by different means, one possessing an abnormally large swim bladder and the other very large quantities of fat. The amount of bone present was found to be considerably greater than in species from other genera.
Several species of this genus regularly invert and swim on their backs. Three of the species known to do this were found amongst the 16 species present in the man-made Lake Kainji on the River Niger in Nigeria. The orientations of many of the species were studied both under natural conditions and in the laboratory. Several possible causes of inversion were investigated, including both physical and behavioural factors. The position of the food source was found to be the most important factor controlling the orientation of the species. By manipulating this it was possible to persuade normally orientating species to invert, and inverting species to return to normal orientation. Three theories to explain the inverting habit are advanced and their merits discussed.  相似文献

Drainage melioration in the Polesye resulted in a sharp increase in the number of tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) which quickly included into the parasitocenosis of the drained land. There were found 26 parasitic and nonparasitic species of Gamasoidea, 3 species of Ixodidae and 2 species of Trombiculidae, 10 species of Aphaniptera, 3 species of Anoplura but there was found no species specific only for the tundra vole. All found parasites occur on many hosts. This explains wide parasitic links of the tundra vole with other homothermic animals which especially extensive with the bank vole and it may have important consequences for epizootiology of tularemia and tick-borne encephalitis.  相似文献

The distribution of isopod species along a 70 km transect through northern Israel is described. The transect started from the Mediterranean seashore through Mt. Carmel and the Gilboa Mts. to the Jordan Valley. The habitats ranged from grassland, macqui to woodland in the Mediterranean region, onto grassland in the semi-arid region. Thirty isopod species were found, of these only one species was common to all the regions, and two species were found in four out of five regions. The largest number of species inhabited the mountainous habitats of Mt. Carmel and the Gilboa Mts: 20 and 14 species, respectively. Twelve species were found in the Coastal Plain; five of these were found exclusively there. Two of the four species found in the Jordan Valley were characteristic of that semi-arid region. Beta-diversity was found to be low in most cases and especially in the comparison between Mediterranean and semi-arid habitats.  相似文献

Summary The distinctive peridial appendages ofArthroderma were of little value for the delimitation of species. The peridial appendages as well as the conidia of certain species were so similar as to be value-less for the delimitation of species. Further, morphological and physiological variation was found to be as great within, as between, species. The usual morphological methods for classifying species were, therefore, inadequate and the concept of biological species was considered.The following points were found to favor the applicability of biological species concepts. Nine of ten species were heterothallic which assured crossing. A gene pool, the result of sexual reproduction and an essential requirement of a biological species, was maintained. This was evidenced by complete fertility between isolates of the same species from diverse geographic areas. Finally, no hybridization between species was evident in over one hundred attempted crosses.Strains which were readily compatible and produced viable ascospores were considered to be members of the same species. Conversely, incompatible strains were differentiated into separate species. In this way over fifty strains from more than one hundred isolations were found to be members of ten species. Six of the species correlated with species previously described on morphological bases, and confirmed their validity. Four species were considered to be new. All four were previously confused withA. quadrifidum orA. cuniculi because they possessed similar types of conidia. Once separated on an incompatibility basis, they were found to possess characteristics of distinct species. The only reliable method for their differentiation, however, was found to be interspecific incompatibility.Several strains, some pathogens, were crossed with soil borne species ofArthroderma. Some mated but others did not. Several incompatible strains possessedArthroderma-like appendages and partial compatibility was indicated. Partial compatibility also occurred in certain interspecific crosses.  相似文献
