During 2006 to 2008, the water, sediment and fish in Albasini Dam, used as a reference site outside a DDT-sprayed area, had been found to be as affected as those in the nearby DDT-sprayed area were. Accordingly, the aim of the current study, conducted in 2014, was to determine the health status of fish from Albasini Dam by means of a histology-based fish health assessment protocol. High levels of nitrates, as well as the organochlorine pesticides aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane and methoxychlor, were found in the water. Fish muscle tissue contained pesticides, including methoxychlor. A semi-quantitative histological assessment on Clarias gariepinus, Coptodon rendalli and Oreochromis mossambicus showed diverse histopathology in selected target organs, with the gills being most affected. Notably, the testis tissue of one C. rendalli was filled with eosinophilic liquid, characteristic of necrosis. Microscopic intersex was found in two of the nine O. mossambicus sampled. This is the second time that intersex as microscopic testicular oocytes has been reported in O. mossambicus in South Africa. This finding perhaps indicates that reproduction may be compromised and this will be investigated further. The presence of intersex and other histopathology in organs could be early warning signs of the declining water quality in this dam.  相似文献

The present study investigated the impact of cumulative irrigation with wastewater on the soil properties and, its health hazards on the consumers of cabbage plants at south Cairo Province, Egypt. Irrigation water, soil and cabbage plants were sample d from two polluted and other two unpolluted farms. The physicochemical properties of water and soil were analyzed and the growth parameters, as well as nutrients and heavy metals concentration in cabbage were investigated. In addition, the daily intake of metals (DIM) and health risk index (HRI) were estimated. Wastewater posed a decrease in the availability of N, P and K, but increases heavy metals in the soil solution. Cabbage stem and root lengths as well as the number of leaves and biomass were greatly reduced in the polluted farms. In addition, the photosynthetic pigments, carbohydrates and proteins were decreased under pollution stress. The concentration of most investigated metals in the leaves and roots were increased with translocation factor greater than one for Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Ni, Fe, and Co. The study revealed that the HRI exceeded one for Pb and Cd in polluted and unpolluted plants; and Fe in polluted ones. Irrigation with wastewater is not suitable for cabbage as it has health risks on humans due to accumulation of heavy metals. It worth noting that, the high ability of cabbage plants to accumulate Pb and Cd from both polluted and unpolluted soils should be taken into consideration when consuming this plant.  相似文献

A histology-based fish health assessment protocol was used in 2009–2010 to assess the health status of Clarias gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam, South Africa. Nineteen fish were collected by angling. The histology of liver, kidney, gills and testes or ovaries was semi-quantitatively assessed and compared to that of fish from a reference site in the Okavango Panhandle, Botswana. Necropsy observations indicated that C. gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam were in poorer condition than those from the Okavango Panhandle. Microscopic analysis showed that the mean liver index (I L), gill index (I G), testis index (I T) and ovary index (I O) were higher, although not statistically significant, in fish from the Okavango Panhandle. The difference in the results between the necropsy-based observations and semi-quantitative histological results was due to the external abnormalities detected in the necropsy analysis, including parasites and skin lesions, not expressing as changes to cell and tissue structure. According to the parameters measured, C. gariepinus from Pongolapoort Dam were in a healthy state.  相似文献

The gross pathology and the histopathological alterations identified in juvenile specimens of the European hake (Merluccius merluccius), one of the most important target species of commercial fisheries in the northwest Mediterranean, are described. A qualitative and semi-quantitative histological approach was performed in specimens from 2007 and 2019. Prevalence and mean intensity of parasites and histopathological changes were calculated in both years. No macroscopic alterations were found in any organ but several parasites (e.g., copepods, nematodes, digeneans) were detected. Microscopically, alterations identified in gills included foci of inflammation and hyperplasia (present in 77.38% of hakes from both years), extensive hyperplasia (33.33%), and inflammation (16.65%) that were potentially related to the mechanical effects of monogeneans and copepods, cysts of unknown etiology (62.69%), and lamellar inflammation associated to Aporocotyle spinosicanalis eggs (8.33%). Granulomas and inflammatory focus were detected in the liver, spleen, and stomach, apparently associated with the presence of nematodes. Coelozoic myxosporean parasites were detected within the renal tubules (66.66%). Most of the pathologies detected were similar to those described in other gadoid species (i.e., Gadus morhua) and were usually related to the presence of ecto and endoparasites. The potential impact of parasites on the health of this fish species is discussed for improving the knowledge and management of these valuable fishing stocks.  相似文献

Del Azul creek (Argentina) is a natural water body used for recreational bathing in which heavy metals and pesticides have been detected. The aim of the study is to estimate the probabilistic non-cancer and cancer risks by recreational bathing, applying U.S. Environmental Protection Agency models for aggregated (exposure through accidental oral intake of water and dermal contact) and cumulative risks (combined exposure to groups of substances) for bathers of 5, 10, 15, and 20 years old. Bathing in Del Azul creek does not generate risks at the concentrations and the exposure scenarios considered. Cypermethrin and arsenic and heptachlor were the riskiest non-cancer and cancer substances, respectively. Our study highlights the importance of considering both routes of exposure because of the great significance of the dermal route and because of the variability of population characteristics, as it has been stated in other studies. These considerations are highly significant for Argentina, where the quality of recreational water for other than microbiological causes is frequently evaluated based only on the harmful oral intake and applied to a hypothetical individual representative of the population.  相似文献

The study measured the concentration of Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, and Zn in various fish tissues (muscle, gills, and liver) of 18 fish species (C. gachua, C. marulius, C. punctatus, C. nama, C. ranga, H. fossilis, C. batrachus, P. ticto, P. phutunio, L. rohita, L. calbasu, L. gonius, T. putitora, T. tor, R. rita, G. chapra, H. ilisa, and N. botia) collected from Ganga river. It is the survey regarding metal concentration in fish tissues increasing day by day. The metal concentration in different fish tissues varied on the following range: Cu (0.45–8.54 µg/g wet wt), Zn (0.07–2.2 µg/g wet wt), Pb (0.20–2.62 µg/g wet wt), Cd (0.07–2.32 µg/g wet wt), and Cr (0.09–1.74 µg/g wet wt). The results show the concentration of Pb, Cd, and Cr metals to be higher than internationally recommended standard limits (as determined by the WHO and FAO) and other similar studies. Generally, higher concentrations of metals were found in liver and gills than muscles. Despite lower estimated daily intake (EDI) of fish in the area (per recommended daily allowance guidelines), values of daily average consumption were lower than the recommended values by FAO/WHO/EFSA, and in fish samples these were below the provisional permissible levels for human consumption. The continuous exposure to heavy metals has been linked to the development of mental retardation, kidney damage, various cancers, and even death in instances of very high exposure in human body.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term bioaccumulation and elimination of Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Fe by Pinna nobilis tissues after their 90 day-transplantation period at Téboulba fishing harbor. During the transplantation period, the Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Fe concentrations in the different tissues of the mussels were measured before and after exposure period. Metal (Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Fe) accumulation in P. nobilis mussels varied depending on the analyzed tissue and the caging times. Notable differences in Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Fe accumulation patterns within the digestive gland, gills and muscle were found and may be due to the ability of each tissue to accumulate metals. During the depuration phase, the elimination of Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Fe depended on the target tissue and the metal speciation. Cd, Pb, Mn and Fe were eliminated rapidly from one organ and increased in other when compared to those of 90 day transplanted mussels. The increase of metal loads during the elimination phase is not clear and particularly what kind of processes is responsible for such response. However, it is reasonable to assume that metals increase is related to the existence of an accumulation/detoxification mechanism, which involves the transport of metals from an organ to another. The data obtained indicate that because of the significantly high quantities of Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Fe accumulated during the exposure phase, the transplanted mussels are suitable bioindicators for monitoring trace metals in marine ecosystem.  相似文献

The aim of the study is to assess the probabilistic non-cancer and cancer risks by recreational bathing in Tres Arroyos creeks (southeastern Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). In these waters, hazardous substances (heavy metals, pesticides) have been detected, possibly related to agricultural activities. To assess such risk, USEPA models in aggregated (exposure through accidental oral water intake and dermal contact simultaneously) and cumulative approaches (combined exposure to more than one substance) were applied, performed for bathers of 5, 10, 15, and 20 years old. The results show that chronic bathing in these waters is not harmful at the concentrations and the exposure scenarios considered. Arsenic was the riskiest substance for both non-cancer and cancer effects, affecting mainly the youngest age group, and the accidental water intake during bathing was the most relevant pathway of exposure. On the other hand, the study highlights the key role of the frequency and duration of the bath event. We discuss the results in light of a previous paper of our authorship concluding that the health risk assessment is a valid alternative to analyze recreational water quality, which, unfortunately, is unused by water management agencies in Argentina.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the ecotoxicological effects of exposure to copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on the gill of the swan mussel Anodonta cygnea using several approaches including qualitative and quantitative histopathology, ultra-morphology (scanning electron microscopy [SEM]) and measures of clearance rate (CR) and bioaccumulation of CuO NPs. Histological alterations in mussels exposed to 0.25 (T1), 2.5 (T2) and 25.0?µg L?1 (T3) CuO NPs for 12 days include changes in the length and form of gill lamellae, changes in inter-lamellar spaces, epithelial hyperplasia, atrophy and tissue rupture. Ultra-morphological changes following CuO NP exposure included epithelial hyperplasia and hypertrophy, epithelial lifting, tissue rupture (water channel fusion) and extensive necrosis of the gill surfaces. IGill (gill damage severity) index values for both histopathological and ultra-morphological data were significantly (P?0.05) higher in T3. The CR of mussels was significantly (P??1 g?1 dry weight]) in comparison to controls (CR?=?108?±?47.14 [L min?1 g?1 dry weight]). CuO NPs accumulated in exposed mussels at all exposure concentrations until day 4, but there was no further change in accumulation levels by the end of the exposure period. The accumulated content of CuO NPs was significantly (P??1 exposure concentration. Based on these results, significant accumulation of CuO NPs in the gills of swan mussel could affect histological and ultra-structural characteristics of this organ and consequently have deleterious impacts on its filtration activity.  相似文献

Summer mortality ('die-off') is common in striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), in the San Francisco Bay-Delta region. Tissue and blood samples of moribund and healthy striped bass collected during the summers of 1986–1988 were analysed. Sixteen moribund and 25 healthy reference fish from the Carquinez Strait area and eight fish caught in the Pacific Ocean were studied. Moribund fish plasma was invariably yellow-orange; most of the moribund fish had discoloured livers with haemorrhagic regions, and approximately one-third had haemorrhagic intestines. Piasma levels of aspartale aminotransferase, uric acid, alkaline phosphatase and cortisol were significantly higher than in reference fish from Carquinez Strait and the Pacific Ocean, whereas cholesterol, sodium, chloride, triiodothyronine and glucose levels were significantly lower. Hepatic heavy metal concentrations and bacterial content were similar in moribund and reference fish. Gill Na.+, K+ -ATPase activity was significantly lower in moribund fish. Liver, kidney, intestine, and thyroid follicles of moribund fish displayed various histopathological changes, and corticosteroidogenic (interrenal) tissue could not be identified positively in moribund fish. These findings are discussed in relation to recent work on the chemical burdens (industrial and agricultural hydrocarbons) found in livers from some of the fish examined in this study.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to investigate the capability of Brassica napus to bioaccumulate zinc and copper from artificially contaminated soil at the flowering and maturation phenological stage. The trial was set up in a greenhouse and the plants were cultivated in pots. The agricultural soil utilized was contaminated with zinc and copper sulfate (300 and 600 mg/kg, respectively). The soil and plant samples were simultaneously collected during the flowering (8 weeks after seeding) and maturation (harvest time, 13 weeks after seeding) stages, and the heavy metal concentrations were then analyzed. The production of vegetable biomass and the length of the roots were measured. The results showed that B. napus accumulated zinc and copper and translocated these elements in different ways in the harvestable parts of the plants. The zinc bioaccumulation was higher than that of copper. At flowering, zinc was mainly accumulated in the shoots (stems + leaves). Copper was particularly accumulated in the roots, during the entire life cycle. Taking into account the biomass production, the highest heavy metal removal by the shoots (above‐ground parts) occurred at the flowering stage for both zinc and copper. The high bioavailability of zinc and copper in the soil did not severely affect the root length and the biomass production.  相似文献

Botanical dietary supplements have a long history of use in Europe and Asia, but the use of these products is becoming increasing popular in the United States. Because these products are classified as dietary supplements, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not routinely monitor them for environmental contaminants. Ginseng served as a model botanical dietary supplement and was purchased from suppliers in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Samples were analyzed for metals (e.g., cadmium, nickel) and chlorinated pesticides (e.g., PCNB, DDT, and metabolites). Flame and furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry were utilized for analysis of metals, while gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrophotometry were utilized for analysis of chlorinated pesticides. Because no formalized guidelines exist to determine risk of botanical dietary supplements, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for protection of human health were used. Metals and chlorinated organics were found in Ginseng samples, but the concentrations posed no noncarcinogenic hazard; however, a 1000?mg/d dose for 350?d/yr resulted in 1 × 10?6 carcinogenic risk in 19% of the Ginseng samples analyzed. At a lower usage rate (42?d/yr), no samples exceeded 1 × 10?6 risk. Chlorinated organics, such as aldrin and heptachlor epoxide, accounted for the carcinogenic risk (1 X 10-6) in the Ginseng samples.  相似文献

The present study investigated the potential changes in hematologic parameters and histology of fish Heteropneustes fossilis when exposed to industrial waste water of different concentrations. The toxicant enter into the fish body from different rout, inhalation, dermal oral, and other several rout for entering in the fish body. The blood parameters of fish H. fossilis control group and treatment were investigated on 1st, 5th, 10th, and 20th days of experiment, hematologic variation was observed in RBC, WBC, MCV, MCH, and MCHC count. Histopathologic changes in liver, intestine, gill, muscle, and heart showed increasing degrees of damage in the tissues in correlation with the accumulation pattern of pesticides, while liver, intestine, gill, muscle, and heart of control group exhibited a normal architecture. Toxic effects of pesticides vary in different organs of the fish H. fossilis significant. The fish exposed to higher concentration showed uncoordinated alterations in behavioral responses, especially erratic and jerky swimming, physiologic, malformation, histologic, hematologic and biochemical changes, frequent surfacing and in gulping, mucus secretion, an increase in opercular movement, and copious secretion of mucus of all over the body.  相似文献

Wastewater particularly from electroplating, paint, leather, metal and tanning industries contain enormous amount of heavy metals. Microorganisms including fungi have been reported to exclude heavy metals from wastewater through bioaccumulation and biosorption at low cost and in eco-friendly way. An attempt was, therefore, made to isolate fungi from sites contaminated with heavy metals for higher tolerance and removal of heavy metals from wastewater. Seventy-six fungal isolates tolerant to heavy metals like Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni were isolated from sewage, sludge and industrial effluents containing heavy metals. Four fungi (Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Aspegillus awamori, Aspergillus flavus, Trichoderma viride) also were included in this study. The majority of the fungal isolates were able to tolerate up to 400 ppm concentration of Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni. The most heavy metal tolerant fungi were studied for removal of heavy metals from liquid media at 50 ppm concentration. Results indicated removal of substantial amount of heavy metals by some of the fungi. With respect to Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni, maximum uptake of 59.67, 16.25, 0.55, and 0.55 mg/g was observed by fungi Pb3 (Aspergillus terreus), Trichoderma viride, Cr8 (Trichoderma longibrachiatum), and isolate Ni27 (A. niger) respectively. This indicated the potential of these fungi as biosorbent for removal of heavy metals from wastewater and industrial effluents containing higher concentration of heavy metals.  相似文献

Hg and As are the major hazardous pollutants in marine sediments due to their high toxicity to benthonic organisms. Understanding the spatial distribution, speciation and bioaccumulation of these toxic elements in sediments is therefore of high environmental importance for identifying their potential risks. Sediments and bivalves Paphia undulata were collected from the mariculture area of Dongshan Bay, China, for characterizing geochemistry (by using the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction procedure) and bioaccumulation of Hg and As [by calculating the biota sediment accumulation factor (BSAF)]. Both elements in sediments were mostly associated with the residual fraction (69.52–95.06% and 88.22–91.12% of the total concentration, respectively), followed by the oxidizable (bound to sulfides and organic matter) fraction (1.25–25.32% and 3.62–6.00%, respectively). However, Hg presented a higher bioaccumulation than As. Correlation analysis indicated that As in residual fraction and Hg in oxidizable fraction exert positive contributions (R = 0.927, P < 0.01 and R = 0.869, P < 0.05, respectively) on their own bioaccumulation factor. This indicated that P. undulata could adsorb both Hg in organic fraction and As in residual fraction from the sediments. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the potential dissolution and release of metals bound to sediments in the digestive tracts of marine organisms.  相似文献

In the present study Prosopis juliflora plants grown in hydroponics solution were exposed to 50,100 and 1000 μM CdCl2. The cadmium uptake, transport and toxicity on the photosynthetic activities in the plants were measured at 48 h after starting cadmium treatments. The results showed that the concentration of Cd2+ in P. juliflora tended to increase with addition of Cd2+ to hydroponics solution. However, the increase of Cd2+ in roots and leaves varied largely. In this sense, the accumulation of Cd2+ in P. juliflora roots increased significantly in proportion with the addition of this metal. In contrast a relatively low level of Cd2+ transportation index, and bioaccumulation factor were found in P. juliflora at 48 h after of treatments. On the other hand the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and the activity of photosystem II (Fv/Fo) ratios in P. juliflora leaf treated with Cd2+ not showed significantly changes during the experiment. These results suggested that the photosynthetic apparatus of P. juliflora was not the primary target of the Cd2+ action. Further studies will be focused in understanding the participation of the root system in Prosopis plants with the rhizosphere activation and root adsorption to soil Cd2+ under natural conditions.  相似文献

The excised intestines of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, were perfused at 20 or 4 degrees C for 1 h 45 min, with methylmercury (CH(3)HgCl) alone, or in the presence of excess L-cysteine (L-Cys), D-cysteine (D-Cys), L-methionine (L-Met); or with ouabain or probenecid to identify the potential CH(3)Hg(II) uptake pathways in fish intestines. A temperature effect was noted, with CH(3)Hg(II) concentrations in tissues perfused at 20 degrees C being higher than at 4 degrees C, substantiating the idea that mechanisms requiring metabolic energy are involved in CH(3)Hg(II) uptake in fish intestines. The results indicate that, when CH(3)Hg(II) is complexed as the CH(3)Hg-L-Cys complex, it is taken up via an L-neutral amino acid carrier and rapidly transported to the serosal side of the intestine. Methylmercury uptake could be inhibited by probenecid and ouabain, although probenecid had less impact on CH(3)Hg(II) uptake than ouabain. Our results for CH(3)Hg(II) uptake in the presence of D-Cys, L-Met in excess of L-Cys, or with a metal mixture further established that CH(3)Hg(II) uptake across fish intestines occurs via a variety of pathways, including an energy-dependent L-neutral amino acid carrier, and that the route and amount of accumulation were a function of CH(3)Hg(II) speciation in the digestive tract of the fish.  相似文献

We aimed to assess the bioaccumulation of selected four trace metals (Cd, Ni, Zn and Co) in four tissues (muscles, skin, gills and liver) of a freshwater fish Wallago attu (lanchi) from three different sites (upstream, middle stream and downstream) of the Indus River in Mianwali district of Pakistan. Heavy metal contents in water samples and from different selected tissues of fish were examined by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The data were statistically compared to study the effects of the site and fish organs and their interaction on the bioaccumulation pattern of these metals at P < 0.05. In W. attu the level of cadmium ranged from 0.004 to 0.24; nickel 0.003–0.708; cobalt 0.002–0.768 and zinc 47.4–1147.5 μg/g wet weight. The magnitude of metal bioaccumulation in different organs of fish species had the following order gills > liver > skin > muscle. The order of bioaccumulation of these metals was Ni < Zn < Co < Cd. Heavy metal concentrations were increased during the dry season as compared to the wet season. The results of this study indicate that freshwater fish produced and marketed in Mianwali have concentrations below the standards of FEPA/WHO for these toxic metals.  相似文献

Waste water fed pisciculture is nowadays a common feature in aquaculture belts across the globe. East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW) a nature’s wonder where waste water fed natural aquaculture beltis is active for more than 70 years now and is efficiently operating as a natural waste management system. The peri urban wetland is also a site of international importance and is listed in Ramsar. Field and lab-based investigations were carried out using three commonly edible carp variety of fishes such as Rohu (Labeorohita), Catla (Catlacatla) and Nile Tilapia (Oreochromisniloticus) collected from ponds (bheries) of the wetland located on the eastern fringes of Kolkata, India. The lab-based analysis revealed the presence of toxic metals such as Cr, Pb, Cd and Hg in the samples with the seasonal order of accumulation being monsoon > post-monsoon > winter > pre-monsoon in the successive years of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Bio-accumulation of toxic heavy metals in fishes follows the order Tilapia > Rohu > Catla where as the bioaccumulation pattern of toxic metals shows the trend Pb > Cd > Cr > Hg across all the seasons and years. The ambient media was also investigated to understand in detail the bioaccumulation pattern at different trophic levels of the ecosystem. Water and sediments were analyzed to evaluate the contamination of toxic heavy metals from point and non-point sources. Current study shows the observed bioaccumulation pattern of the toxic heavy metals in one of the fragile ecosystems that raises an important question of environmental safety in the food we intake on daily basis.  相似文献

Ganga is the largest riverine system of India with a fragile ecosystem. Its prone to anthropogenic disturbances because of its cultural, economic and environmental values. The contamination of river Ganga by heavy metals (HM) is due to biotic (anthropogenic sources) and abiotic (pesticides, fertilizers) sources that poses a devastating health hazard to human, plant and edible fish life. The chemical analysis with the help of atomic absorption spectrometer performed on its water samples demonstrated the accumulation of heavy metals such as Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn). Moreover, the spectrophotometric analysis indicated clearly the accumulation of heavy metals in order of occurrence (Fe > As > Cd > Zn > Pb) in liver and (Zn > Fe > As > Cd > Pb) in kidney of edible fish Channa punctatus. The present study has be used to sensitively monitor the extent of heavy metals pollution in the biotic aqua life of river Ramganga system and its suggested that the bioaccumulation of heavy metal in Channa punctatus has reached above permissible limits for human consumption, indicating potential health risks. Necessary biological steps should be taken to handle such food pollution and prevent the environmental risk and food chain disruption.  相似文献
