Shallow lakes often alternate between two possible states: one clear with submerged macrophytes, and another one turbid, dominated by phytoplankton. A third type of shallow lakes, the inorganic turbid, result from high contents of suspended inorganic material, and is characterized by low phytoplankton biomass and macrophytes absence. In our survey, the structure and photosynthetic properties (based on 14C method) of phytoplankton were related to environmental conditions in these three types of lakes in the Pampa Plain. The underwater light climate was characterized. Clear-vegetated lakes were more transparent (K d 4.5–7.7 m−1), had high DOC concentrations (>45 mg l−1), low phytoplankton Chl a (1.6–2.7 μg l−1) dominated by nanoflagellates. Phytoplankton productivity and photosynthetic efficiency (α ~ 0.03 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 W−1 m2) were relatively low. Inorganic-turbid lakes showed highest K d values (59.8–61.4 m−1), lowest phytoplankton densities (dominated by Bacillariophyta), and Chl a ranged from 14.6 to 18.3 μg l−1. Phytoplankton-turbid lakes showed, in general, high K d (4.9–58.5 m−1) due to their high phytoplankton abundances. These lakes exhibited the highest Chl a values (14.2–125.7 μg l−1), and the highest productivities and efficiencies (maximum 0.56 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 W−1 m2). Autotrophic picoplankton abundance, dominated by ficocianine-rich picocyanobacteria, differed among the shallow lakes independently of their type (0.086 × 105–41.7 × 105 cells ml−1). This article provides a complete characterization of phytoplankton structure (all size fractions), and primary production of the three types of lakes from the Pampa Plain, one of the richest areas in shallow lakes from South America. We measured water quality monthly for 22 years in water entering, within, and exiting a 65 km2 shallow polymictic and eutrophic freshwater lake in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Fertilizer use in the watershed is the dominate source of phosphorous (P) going into the lake and controls the lake’s P concentrations, but nitrogen (N) fertilizer use was not related to total nitrogen concentration in the lake. Half of the particulate P entering the lake is trapped within it and there is a net accumulation of N that appears to be from the stimulation of nitrogen fixation. The lake’s concentration of Chlorophyll a (µg Chl a l?1) and increase in N in the lake was directly related to the concentration of P in water entering the lake. Variations in the Chl a concentration within a freshwater lake downstream are also directly related to the annual use of P fertilizer, but not to N fertilizer use. Reducing agriculture-sourced P runoff will lower (but not eliminate) both the frequency of algal blooms within Lac des Allemands and the amount of N delivered to the estuary.

Little research has been conducted on effects of iteroparous anadromous fishes on Arctic lakes. We investigated trophic ecology, fish growth, and food web structure in six lakes located in Nunavut, Canada; three lakes contained anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) whereas three lakes did not contain Arctic charr. All lakes contained forage fishes and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush; top predator). Isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) of fishes and invertebrates did not differ between lakes with and without anadromous Arctic charr; if anadromous Arctic charr deliver marine-derived nutrients and/or organic matter to freshwater lakes, these inputs could not be detected with δ13C and/or δ15N. Lake trout carbon (C):nitrogen (N) and condition were significantly higher in lakes with Arctic charr (C:N = 3.42, K = 1.1) than in lakes without Arctic charr (C:N = 3.17, K = 0.99), however, and ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) condition was significantly lower in lakes with Arctic charr (K = 0.58) than in lakes without Arctic charr (K = 0.64). Isotope data indicated that pre-smolt and resident Arctic charr may be prey for lake trout and compete with ninespine stickleback. Linear distance metrics applied to isotope data showed that food webs were more compact and isotopically redundant in lakes where Arctic charr were present. Despite this, lake trout populations in lakes with Arctic charr occupied a larger isotope space and showed greater inter-individual isotope differences. Anadromous Arctic charr appear to affect ecology and feeding of sympatric freshwater species, but effects are more subtle than those seen for semelparous anadromous species.  相似文献

The age, growth, and population structure of the smooth clam Callista chione were determined from samples collected by hydraulic dredge and SCUBA at four locations in the eastern Adriatic during 2007 and 2008. The age of 436 clam shells was determined from internal growth lines present in shell sections, and the timing of growth line formation was ascertained from monthly collections of clams to occur between August and September when sea water temperatures were maximal. In addition, age of 30 older individuals was verified with acetate peels of polished and etched shell sections. Differences were apparent in the age structure and growth rates of clams collected from the four locations studied. Von Bertalanffy growth (VBG) curves obtained for clams from these locations were L t  = 72.4 (1−e−0.25(t − 2.68)) (Rab Island), L t  = 74.5 (1−e−0.15(t + 0.57)) (Pag Bay), L t  = 79.3 (1−e−0.34(t − 0.97)) (Cetina estuary), and L t  = 82.5 (1−e−0.11(t + 2.88)) (Kaštela Bay). The age of the clams ranged between 3 and 44 years; median clam ages were similar at three of the four locations (14, 12, and 12 years, respectively), but was significantly lower in the Cetina estuary (4 years). The VBG growth constants recorded from clams were within the range of values obtained for this species by previous authors. The observed local differences in population structure indicate different levels of exploitation and illustrate the need to establish long-term strategies for a sustainable exploitation of smooth clams in the Croatian Adriatic.  相似文献

Growth, biomass and production of two small barbs (Barbus humilis and Barbus tanapelagius) and their role in the food web of Lake Tana were investigated. From length–frequency distribution of trawl monitoring surveys growth coefficient, Φ′ values were estimated at 3.71–4.17 for B. humilis and 3.70–4.14 for B. tanapelagius, respectively. Values for B. humilis were confirmed in pond experiments. Mean biomass of the small barbs was 13.3 kg fresh wt ha−1, with B. humilis being most abundant in the littoral and sub-littoral zones, whereas B. tanapelagius was most abundant in the sub-littoral and pelagic zones. The two small barbs had a production of 53 kg fresh wt ha−1 year−1. Although their P/B ratios of about 4.0 were relatively high for small cyprinids, both their biomass and production were low in comparison with other small fish taxa in other tropical lakes. Of the zooplankton production only about 29% was consumed by the small barbs. However, they did not utilize calanoid copepods, which were responsible for approximately 57% of the zooplankton production and it is likely that small barb production was food limited during certain periods of the year. Piscivorous labeobarbs consumed about 56% of the small barbs production annually, but additionally, Clarias gariepinus, and many bird species were also preying on them. Therefore, limitation of Barbus production by predation during certain periods in the year cannot be excluded.  相似文献

In this study, two laccase isoenzymes (Lac1 and Lac2) from the culture supernatant of Trametes hirsuta MX2 were purified, and the genes (Lac1 and Lac2) coding the isoenzymes were cloned. Both Lac1 and Lac2 contained an open reading frame of 1563 bp with an identity of 79%. The two isoenzymes showed significant biochemical differences. The maximal activities of Lac1 and Lac2 were at pH 2.5 with 2-2′-azino-di-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and the optimal temperatures for the activities of Lac1 and Lac2 were 60 and 50 °C, respectively. Lac1 exhibited excellent resistance to acidic conditions and retained 62.17% of its initial activity at pH 2.5 after a 72-h incubation. Lac2 was more thermostable than Lac1 with half-lives (t1/2) of 9.58 and 3.12 h at 50 and 60 °C, respectively; the t1/2 of Lac1 were only 4.19 and 0.88 h, respectively. Both Lac1 and Lac2 isoenzymes have a strong tolerance to Mg2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, and EDTA (50 mM). At a low concentration of 0.05 U mL?1, the enzymes could decolorize towards Remazol Brilliant Blue R, Acid Red 1, Crystal Violet, and Neutral Red in the presence of ABTS. These unusual properties demonstrated that the two laccases have strong potential for specific industrial applications.

Water clarity in three lakes, Chagan, Xinmiao, and Kuli, in northeast China was evaluated based on Landsat TM data and in situ measurements in this study. The agreement between satellite data and water clarity from field-collected Secchi disk depth (SDD) for individual lakes was strong (0.72 ≤ R 2 ≤ 0.98), and four regression equations were used to estimate SDD values. Lake clarity showed strong geographic patterns: Lake Chagan had low clarity and Lake Xinmiao and Kuli had high clarity. The study indicates that Landsat TM can be effectively applied to estimate water clarity for inland lakes in the area.  相似文献

In contrast to other lakes studied in Cape Breton Highlands National Park (Nova Scotia, Canada), our paleolimnological results indicated that Glasgow Lake has been impacted by acidic deposition starting in the early 1900s. Based on analysis of diatom assemblages, the lake experienced a decrease in diatom-inferred lakewater pH from a pre-industrial pH of ~5.8 to a current pH of 5.3 (2000–2002 measured mean pH = 5.0) as well as a decrease in diatom-inferred Gran-alkalinity. In this study, diatom-based paleolimnological techniques were used in conjunction with a dynamic biogeochemical model (MAGIC) to assess both the timing and extent of the acidification trend, as well as determine a probable explanation as to why this lake, and none of the other 15 Cape Breton Highlands lakes studied for paleolimnology thus far, acidified under a peak non-marine sulphate deposition load of 43.6 mmolc m−2 year−1 in the mid-1970s. Steady-state models estimate that Glasgow Lake had the lowest buffering capacity of six study lakes and estimated critical sulphate loading of <1 mmolc m−2 year−1. MAGIC also estimated a loss of charge balance alkalinity from a pre-1850 value of 38 μmolc l−1 to a low of 12 μmolc l−1. While no evidence of biological recovery has been recorded, MAGIC estimates an increase in charge balance alkalinity to 27 μmolc l−1 in 2002 in response to decreased SO2 emissions. Of the five other lakes that were modelled, all showed trends towards more acidic states and subsequent increases in charge balance alkalinity; however, the empirical paleo-diatom approach applied to these lakes showed no evidence of acidification. Thus, Glasgow Lake has the lowest buffering capacity among the Cape Breton Highland study lakes and serves as a sentinel of potential acidification trends and recovery in this region.  The autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum Lohmann was observed during winter and spring in saline lakes ranging in salinity from 2 to 78‰ in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica. The ciliate remained active during winter, and contained chlorophyll even though the level of light available for photosynthesis was minimal. No evidence of encystment as a means of survival during winter was observed. A seasonal study in one of the lakes, Ace Lake, revealed that M. rubrum was present throughout the year at abundances ranging from 1×104 to 3.5×105 cells l-1. During the winter period, when little light penetrated the lake’s ice cover, cells were most common immediately under the ice at 2 m, where cell numbers were typically 8×104 cells l-1. Benthic algal communities can play an important role in matter and energy flux of shallow lakes. Their contribution to total primary production of lakes has been largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to estimate the primary production of the epipsammic algal communities at different water depths in Lake Balaton (Hungary) with photosynthetic measurements performed in laboratory. The photosynthesis of the benthic algae of different origin was studied at nine different irradiance levels, in three replicates. The maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) was always higher in samples from the shallow parts than those from the deeper regions of the lake. Along the west–east longitudinal axis of the lake P max decreased in the southern part and increased in the middle of the lake as a consequence of differences in the chlorophyll-a concentrations. Knowing P max, I k, global radiation and extinction coefficient, the primary production (mg C m−2 day−1) of the epipsammic algal community was calculated at different water depths. In the shallow regions at 0.5 and 1 m water depth 75–95% and 60–85% of the production was attributable to the epipsammon. The percentage contribution of epipsammon was at 2 m water depth 20–65%. In the deeper pelagic region (>3 m) more than 85% of the primary production originated from the phytoplankton.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other non-polar organics in resident brackish water clams (Rangia cuneata) at selected sites near an oil refinery; (2) determine if the tissue burdens were causing adverse effects to the clams, and (3) evaluate potential seasonal variations from reproduction in clams taken from the same beds in the spring and fall. Clams were evaluated from three beds located in the refinery discharge plume (near-field stations), three beds located up river outside of the Refinery effluent plume (north far-field), and three beds down river (south far-field) of the Refinery plume. Total PAH concentrations in the tissues of the near-field clams were significantly higher than in the clams located at the far-field stations in both the spring and fall. Total PAH concentrations of the near-field clams were significantly higher in the spring than the fall. No difference was found in total PAHs in the spring or fall in the far-field clams. Total pesticide and total PCB concentrations were significantly higher in the spring than the fall at all stations. The highest concentrations of both pesticides and PCBs were found at the north far-field stations. A tissue residue concentration analysis and three theoretical approaches for estimating detrimental effects to clams in both the near- and far-field suggested that no adverse effects should occur from total PAHs, total pesticides, or total PCBs. Some uncertainty, however, was associated with the theoretical approaches. An estimate of clam density in each clam bed showed that Rangia were growing and reproducing at all stations.  相似文献

We investigated monogonont rotifers in two natural Macedonian lakes that greatly differ in age, size and trophic state: Lake Ohrid and Lake Dojran. A main characteristic of Lake Ohrid is the scarcity of nutrients and consequently a low level of primary production. Lake Dojran represents a typical eutrophic lake. Results clearly indicate that species numbers are negatively correlated with trophic degree. Qualitative analyses of rotifer compositions in Lakes Ohrid and Dojran showed the presence of 70 and 55 taxa, respectively. Rotifer assemblages differed in their community structure, population densities, and the occurrence pattern of dominant species. The density of rotifers increased with increasing nutrient concentration, varying from min. 0.67 ind. L−1 in June, 2006 to max. 8.2 ind. L−1 in July, 2004 in Lake Ohrid, whereas min. 28.8 ind. L−1 (in December, 2005) and max. 442.5 ind. L−1 (in September, 2005) were recorded in Lake Dojran. Gastropus stylifer and Keratella cochlearis were the most abundant species in the pelagic zone of Lake Ohrid, averaging monthly densities of 1.2 ind. L−1 and 0.6 ind. L−1, respectively, thereby contributing 29% and 15% to rotifer abundance. In contrast, Lake Dojran rotifers were dominated by Brachionus spp. Brachionus diversicornis and Brachionus calyciflorus f. amphiceros were most abundant, comprising 40% and 25% of the total rotifer density. These results corroborate our idea, that the trophic state is an important factor in determining the composition of rotifer communities.  相似文献

The phytoplankton communities and the production of cyanobacterial toxins were investigated in two alkaline Kenyan crater lakes, Lake Sonachi and Lake Simbi. Lake Sonachi was mainly dominated by the cyanobacterium Arthrospira fusiformis, Lake Simbi by A. fusiformis and Anabaenopsis abijatae. The phytoplankton biomasses measured were high, reaching up to 3159 mg l−1 in L. Sonachi and up to 348 mg l−1 in L. Simbi. Using HPLC techniques, one structural variant of the hepatotoxin microcystin (microcystin-RR) was found in L. Sonachi and four variants (microcystin-LR, -RR, -LA and -YR) were identified in L. Simbi. The neurotoxin anatoxin-a was found in both lakes. To our knowledge this is the first evidence of cyanobacterial toxins in L. Sonachi and L. Simbi. Total microcystin concentrations varied from 1.6 to 12.0 μg microcystin-LR equivalents g−1 DW in L. Sonachi and from 19.7 to 39.0 μg microcystin-LR equivalents g−1 DW in L. Simbi. Anatoxin-a concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 μg g−1 DW in L. Sonachi and from 0 to 1.4 μg g−1 DW in L. Simbi. In a monocyanobacterial strain of A. fusiformis, isolated from L. Sonachi, microcystin-YR and anatoxin-a were produced. The concentrations found were 2.2 μg microcystin g−1 DW and 0.3 μg anatoxin-a g−1 DW. This is the first study showing A. fusiformis as producer of microcystins and anatoxin-a. Since A. fusiformis occurs in mass developments in both lakes, a health risk for wildlife can be expected.  相似文献

During two vegetation seasons (2004–2005), we compared feeding spectra of Arctodiaptomus salinus (Calanoida, Copepoda) populations inhabiting two neighboring salt lakes, Shira and Shunet, Khakasia, Russia, using fatty acid (FA) trophic markers. Sestonic FA composition in two lakes moderately differed, whereas levels of diatom FA markers were higher in Lake Shunet and of Cyanobacteria and green algae markers in Lake Shira. In general, markers in storage lipids—triacylglycerols (TAG) of A. salinus—reflected the differences in sestonic composition of the two lakes. Nevertheless, TAG fraction was also enriched by FA trophic markers of the minor components of seston, which were selectively ingested by the animals. In Lake Shira, A. salinus had significantly higher concentrations of bacterial FA markers in TAG. In Lake Shunet, TAG of A. salinus contained significantly higher relative amounts of 18:4ω3, 18:5ω3 and C22 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which indicated marked contribution of cryptophytes or (and) flagellates into the diet. Laboratory experiments showed feeding on Cryptomonas and sulfur purple bacteria in Lake Shunet and ciliates and colonial picoplankton in both lakes, and generally confirmed the differences in FA trophic markers in A. salinus between the lakes. The two populations of A. salinus markedly differed in levels of essential long-chain PUFA, eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, although the levels of these FA in seston were quite similar between the two lakes. The higher levels of the essential ω3 PUFA in A. salinus in Lake Shunet may be an adaptive response of the animals to a vertical stratification of physico-chemical conditions and significantly higher salinity levels at the boundary of adjacent bottom layer in this lake.  相似文献

In winter of 2009/2010, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae bloomed in the ice and snow covered oligo-mesotrophic Lake Stechlin, Germany. The photosynthesis of the natural population was measured at eight temperatures in the range of 2–35°C, at nine different irradiance levels in the range of 0–1,320 μmol m−2 s−1 PAR at each applied temperature. The photoadaptation parameter (I k) and the maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) correlated positively with the temperature between 2 and 30°C, and there was a remarkable drop in both parameters at 35°C. The low I k at low temperatures enabled the active photosynthesis of overwintering populations at low irradiance levels under ice and snow cover. The optimum of the photosynthesis was above 20°C at irradiances above 150 μmol m−2 s−1. At lower irradiance levels (7.5–30 μmol m−2 s−1), the photosynthesis was the most intensive in the temperature range of 2–5°C. The interaction between light and temperature allowed the proliferation of A. flos-aquae in Lake Stechlin resulting in winter water bloom in this oligo-mesotrophic lake. The applied 2°C is the lowest experimental temperature ever in the photosynthesis/growth studies of A. flos-aquae, and the results of the P–I and P–T measurements provide novel information about the tolerance and physiological plasticity of this species.  相似文献

The presence of crustaceans in some Antarctic lakes adds a level of complexity to the food webs of these environments. The grazing pressure of the crustaceans on phytoplankton and other protists, and the role they play in controlling food web structure, has not yet been examined in any detail. This paper presents the first data on grazing pressure of crustacean zooplankton in continental Antarctic lakes. In this study the grazing rates of Paralabidocera antarctica in saline Ace Lake, Vestfold Hills, were assessed using a radio-tracer method. Clearance rates ranged from approximately 1 to 8 ml ind.−1 day−1, depending on developmental stage. Due to their high abundance, nauplii exhibited the highest daily carbon ingestion rates. The population cleared about 3% of the water column per day, accounting for a significant fraction of primary production. P. antarctica has a considerable impact on the carbon cycle in Ace Lake and, by inference, in the other lakes in which it occurs. Accepted: 30 October 1999  相似文献

The golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei is a freshwater bivalve that adheres to water intake facilities, leading to problems of several kinds. Biofouling problems have been increasing recently in East Asia and South America, and the planktonic stage of this species is considered to play an important role in its dispersal. We investigated the larval dynamics of L. fortunei in two reservoirs, Lake Ohshio and Lake Takenuma, which are connected by a headrace channel. An aeration system for water quality conservation was present in the former reservoir but not in the latter. Larval density in Lake Ohshio was more than 10,000 individuals/m3 with a maximum of 80,000 individuals/m3 in summer. The density in Lake Takenuma was much lower, with a maximum of around 200 individuals/m3. Water temperature (WT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration were almost uniform regardless of water depth in Lake Ohshio because of destratification due to continuous aeration. Summer WT and DO in the lake were considered to be suitable for survival and reproduction of L. fortunei. On the other hand, stratification was found for WT and DO in Lake Takenuma throughout the summer. The low WT and DO found in the deep areas of the lake in summer were considered to be not suitable for survival and reproduction of this species. Thus, the population of L. fortunei larvae differed widely even in two adjoining lakes, and WT and DO are considered to be critical factors, especially for reproduction.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), chlorophyll-a and inorganic nitrogen were investigated in two small mountainous lakes (Lake Hongfeng and Baihua), on the Southwestern China Plateau, based on almost 2 years’ field observation. DOC concentrations ranged from 163 μM to 248 μM in Lake Hongfeng and from 143 μM to 308 μM in Lake Baihua, respectively, during the study period. DON concentrations ranged from 7 μM to 26 μM in Lake Hongfeng and from 14 μM to 47 μM in Lake Baihua. DOC showed vertical heterogeneity with higher concentrations in the epilimnion than in the hypolimnion during the stratification period. The DON concentration profiles appeared to be more variable than the DOC profiles. Apparent DON maxima occurred in the upper layer of water. In Lake Hongfeng, DOC concentration in the surface water was highest at the end of spring and early summer. DON concentration was 2–5 μM higher in May 2003 and in June 2004 than in adjacent months. DOC and chlorophyll-a concentrations were significantly correlated (r = 0.79, P < 0.05). The period of highest concentrations of DOC in Lake Hongfeng was also the season of concentrated rainfall. Algae activity and allochthonous input might result in an increase of DOC and DON concentrations together. In Lake Baihua, the maximum concentrations of DOC and DON in the surface water occurred simultaneously in May 2003 and February 2004. DOC concentrations were significantly correlated with DON (r = 0.90, P < 0.01), indicating the common sources. Allochthonous input, biological processes, stratification and mixing were the most important factors controlling the distributions and cycling of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and inorganic nitrogen in these two lakes. Inference from the corresponding vertical distributions of DOM and inorganic nitrogen indicated that DOM played potential roles in the internal loading of nitrogen and metabolism in the water body in these small lakes. The carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio showed a potential significance for tracing the source and biogeochemical processes of DOM in the lakes. These results are of significance in the further understanding of biogeochemical cycling and environmental effects of DOM and nitrogen in lake ecosystems.  相似文献

Urban lakes belong to various groups, for example from “young” to “old” with regard to development, and from “natural” to “anthropogenic” with respect to transformations due to human activity. The majority of these lakes are eutrophic and polytrophic, but special attention should be paid to mesotrophic ones, with relatively unchanged vegetation, with species of the class Charetea, e.g. Lake Redykajny (43.3% of the phytolittoral) or Lake Tyrsko (44.0% of the phytolittoral).  相似文献
