This paper focuses on the invasion by Turbinaria ornata (a brown algae) in the Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia [(5–35°S)/(200–230°E)]. Prior to 1980, this alga existed only in the Society and Austral archipelagoes. Between 1985 and 1990, it began to appear in the southern and northern parts of the Tuamotu archipelago. Genetic analyses have been shown not to be appropriate in determining the origin of this algae population. This study investigated the possible ocean drift of floating aggregates of algae. Ocean currents were calculated from satellite data from 1993 to 2001. Their spatial variations as well as their seasonal and interannual variations are described along with calculated drift trajectories. While it was found that mean currents cannot directly transport algae from the Society and Austral archipelagoes to the Tuamotu, the large interannual changes during the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon produce current reversals that are strong enough to create a transport pathway in a short enough time to allow their survival. 相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of the plastid (chloroplast) DNA matK gene of Zosteraceae species was undertaken. A molecular phylogenetic tree based on matK sequence data showed the monophyly of Heterozostera tasmanica and subgenus Zosterella and did not support the separation of Heterozostera from the genus Zostera. The tree based on matK supported the monophyly of the subgenus Zostera, and showed that Zosteraceae consist of three main groups: Phyllospadix, which is clearly defined by being dioecious; the subgenus Zosterella and Heterozostera; and the subgenus Zostera. Character-state reconstruction of chromosome number and geographic distribution for our molecular phylogenetic tree showed
that 2n=12 is a plesiomorphic character for Zostera and Heterozostera, that the chromosome number was doubled or tripled in two lineages, and that the initial speciation of Zostera and Heterozostera occurred in the Northern Hemisphere. The matK tree showed the close affinity of Z. noltii and Z. japonica, which have disjunct distributions. Zostera marina, which is the only widely distributed species in the subgenus Zostera, also occurring in the northern Atlantic, was shown to be embedded within other subgenus Zostera species. 相似文献

This study deals with two range-extending brown algae from Tahitian coral reefs, Sargassum mangarevense and Turbinaria ornata; their alginate properties, mannitol and phenolic contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were determined. Turbinaria ornata showed the richest alginate content with the highest extraction yield (19.2 ± 1.3% dw). Their alginates also exhibited the
highest viscosity (50 ± 18 mPa.s), but the M:G ratios (mannuronic acid to glucuronic acid) of alginates (1.25–1.42) were similar
in both species. Alginate yield displayed spatial variations, but no significant seasonal changes. The highest mannitol content
was found in S. mangarevense (12.2 ± 2.1% dw) during the austral winter. With respect to other tropical Fucales, both algae exhibited also a high phenolic
content (2.45–2.85% dw) with significant spatio-temporal variations. Furthermore, high antioxidant activity and activity against
Staphylococcus aureus were also detected in extracts. According to these preliminary results, these two range-extending algae are of key interest
in numerous industrial areas. 相似文献

The antibacterial properties of the three seagrasses namely Cymodocea serrulata, Halophila ovalis and Zostera capensis were tested against the human pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi, Salmonella typhimurium and Micrococcus luteus, using six different solvents namely, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol and water. Ethyl acetate
and methanol extracts showed maximum activity against most of the pathogens when compared to other solvents. Experiments are
underway to isolate active compound(s) implicated in controlling the growth of the pathogens in vitro. 相似文献

Matrix polysaccharide from the brown algae Sargassum turbinarioides collected in the coastal waters of Nosy Be (Madagascar) in the Indian Ocean was isolated and its structure was studied by
1H-NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEC-MALLS and HPAEC. An alginate with a molecular weight of 5.528 × 105 g mol−1 was identified as sole polysaccharide. Values of the M/G ratio, F
GG, F
MM and F
GM (or F
GM) blocks were measured at respectively 0.94, 0.39, 0.36 and 0.25 and compared with those of alginates from other Sargassum species. This sodium alginate appeared similar to some of the other Sargassum alginates with M/G < 1, high values of homopolymeric blocks (η < 1) and significant polyguluronic block content. 相似文献

Diatoms stand out among other microalgae due to the high diversity of species-specific silica frustules whose components (valves and girdle bands) are formed within the cell in special organelles called silica deposition vesicles (SDVs). Research on cell structure and morphogenesis of frustule elements in diatoms of different taxonomic groups has been carried out since the 1950s but is still relevant today. Here, cytological features and valve morphogenesis in the freshwater raphid pennate diatom Encyonema ventricosum (Agardh) Grunow have been studied using light and transmission electron microscopy of cleaned frustules and ultrathin sections of cells, and scanning electron and atomic force microscopy of the frustule surface. Data have been obtained on chloroplast structure: the pyrenoid is spherical, penetrated by a lamella (a stack of two thylakoids); the girdle lamella consists of several short lamellae. The basic stages of frustule morphogenesis characteristic of raphid pennate diatoms have been traced, with the presence of cytoskeletal elements near SDVs being observed throughout this process. Degradation of the plasmalemma and silicalemma is shown to take place when the newly formed valve is released into the space between sister cells. The role of vesicular transport and exocytosis in the gliding of pennate diatoms is discussed. 相似文献

Transposable elements might be importantly involved in citrus genetic instability and genome evolution. The presence of gypsy like retrotransposons, their heterogeneity and genomic distribution in Citrus and Poncirus, have been investigated. Eight clones containing part of the POL coding region of gypsy like retrotransposons have been isolated from a commercial variety of Citrus clementina, one of the few sexual species in Citrus. Four of the eight clones might correspond to active elements given that they present all the conserved motifs described in the literature as essential for activity, no in-frame stop codon and no frame-shift mutation. High homology has been found between some of these citrus elements and retroelements within a resistance-gene cluster from potato, another from Poncirus trifoliata and two putative resistance polyproteins from rice. Nested copies of gypsy like elements are scattered along the Citrus and Poncirus genomes. The results on genomic distribution show that these elements were introduced before the divergence of both genera and evolved separately thereafter. IRAPs based on gypsy and copia types of retrotransposons seem to distribute differently, therefore gypsy based IRAPs prove a new, complementary set of molecular markers in Citrus to study and map genetic variability, especially for disease resistance. Similarly to copia-derived IRAPs, the number of copies and heterozygosity values found for gypsy derived IRAPs are lower in Poncirus than in Citrus aurantium, which is less apomictic and the most usual rootstock for clementines until 1970.Communicated by C. Peroxynitrite formationin vivo is implicated in numerous human diseases and there is considerable interest in the use of antioxidants and natural products
for their treatment. The three components (1–3) isolated fromSargassum thunbergii as well as the organic solventsoluble fractions and the aqueous layer ofS. thunbergii were evaluated for their potential to scavenge authentic ONOO and ONOO derived from 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). The
antioxidant activity of the individual fractions was in the order of 85% aquaous (aq.) MeOH>n-BuOH>n-hexane> H2O. The three known compounds sargahydroquinoic acid (1), sargaquinoic acid (2) and sargachromenol (3) showed peroxynitrite-scavenging activities comparable to those of L-ascorbic acid and penicillamine. These results showed
a possible antioxidant activity in major constituents ofS. thunbergii. 相似文献

The development of tissue culture systems in duckweeds has, to date, been limited to species of the genus Lemna. We report here the establishment of an efficient tissue culture cycle (callus induction, callus growth and plant regeneration) for Spirodela oligorrhiza Hegelm SP, Spirodela punctata 8717 and Lemna gibba var. Hurfeish. Significant differences were found among the three duckweed species pertaining to carbohydrate and phytohormone requirements for callus induction, callus growth and frond regeneration. In vitro incubation with poorly assimilated carbohydrates such as galactose (S. oligorrhiza SP and L. gibba var. Hurfeish) and sorbitol (S. punctata 8717) as sole carbon source yielded high levels of callus induction on phytohormone-supplemented medium. Sorbitol is required for optimal callus growth of S. oligorrhiza SP and S. punctata 8717, while sucrose is required for callus growth of L. gibba var. Hurfeish. Sucrose either alone (S. oligorrhiza SP, L. gibba var. Hurfeish) or in addition to sorbitol (S. punctata 8717) is required for frond regeneration.Abbreviations

Comparative genome analysis has been performed between alfalfa ( Medicago sativa) and pea ( Pisum sativum), species which represent two closely related tribes of the subfamily Papilionoideae with different basic chromosome numbers. The positions of genes on the most recent linkage map of diploid alfalfa were compared to those of homologous loci on the combined genetic map of pea to analyze the degree of co-linearity between their linkage groups. In addition to using unique genes, analysis of the map positions of multicopy (homologous) genes identified syntenic homologs (characterized by similar positions on the maps) and pinpointed the positions of non-syntenic homologs. The comparison revealed extensive conservation of gene order between alfalfa and pea. However, genetic rearrangements (due to breakage and reunion) were localized which can account for the difference in chromosome number (8 for alfalfa and 7 for pea). Based on these genetic events and our increasing knowledge of the genomic structure of pea, it was concluded that the difference in genome size between the two species (the pea genome is 5- to 10-fold larger than that of alfalfa) is not a consequence of genome duplication in pea. The high degree of synteny observed between pea and Medicago loci makes further map-based cloning of pea genes based on the genome resources now available for M. truncatula a promising strategy.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at Communicated by W. We have analyzed the expression patterns of two Fox genes, FoxE and FoxQ, in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis. Expression of Ci-FoxE was specific to the endostyle of adults, being prominent in the thyroid-equivalent region of zone 7. Ci-FoxQ was expressed in several endodermal organs of adult ascidians, such as the endostyle, branchial sac and esophagus. In the endostyle, the pattern of Ci-FoxQ expression was similar to that of CiTTF-1, being prominent in the thyroid-equivalent regions of zones 7 and 8. Therefore, these Fox genes may perform thyroid-equivalent functions in the ascidian endostyle.Edited by N. Satoh 相似文献

The Cactaceae, a family of about 1,800 species of succulent perennials, contains numerous species that exhibit self-incompatibility (SI). The objective of the current study was to determine the number of incompatibility groups present among diploid (2n=2x=22) cultivars of the genera Schlumbergera Lem. (Christmas cacti) and Hatiora Britton & Rose (Easter cacti). Two partial diallel crosses were performed, one with 19 cultivars of Christmas cacti [= S. truncata (Haworth) Moran and S. × buckleyi (Buckley) Tjaden] and the other with 10 cultivars of Easter cacti [= H. gaertneri (Regel) Barthlott, H. rosea (Lagerheim) Barthlott, and H. × graeseri Barthlott ex D. Hunt]. The compatibility/incompatibility status of crosses was determined by percent fruit set and presence of seed in mature fruit. None of the cultivars set fruit when selfed or crossed with a cultivar in the same incompatibility group, but fruit set ranged from 35% to 100% following compatible crosses. For the Christmas cacti, eight intra-incompatible but reciprocally compatible groups were identified, with 13 of the 19 cultivars assigned to three incompatibility groups (68%). The ten cultivars of Easter cacti yielded nine intra-incompatible but reciprocally compatible groups, with two cultivars in one incompatibility group and the other eight cultivars each assigned to a unique group. One cultivar of Christmas cactus ('Abendroth 6') was incompatible when crossed as a male with cultivars in incompatibility group 2 but was compatible in reciprocal crosses, results that suggest that this cultivar is an S-allele homozygote. The crossing relationships are consistent with a one-locus, gametophytic SI system with multiple alleles. Allozyme locus Lap-1, shown previously to be linked with the S locus (recombination frequency 7%) in Schlumbergera, exhibited insufficient allelic diversity for determining the S genotypes of the 19 cultivars of Christmas cacti. Based on the number of incompatibility groups in each diallel, at least five S-alleles occur in the 19 Christmas cacti and the 10 Easter cacti.Publication 3337 of the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station. This study was aimed at determining the optimal depth and photon irradiance for growth of Sargassum fulvellum. Sampling and measurement of underwater irradiance were carried out at farms cultivating S. fulvellum at Wando, southwestern coast of Korea, from May 2004 to April 2005. Growth of thalli, underwater irradiance and photosynthetic
quantum yield were measured over a range of depths for three culture stages. During their nursery cultivation stage (Stage
I), length increase was greatest at 1.5 m depth (2.5 ± 0.2 cm), where the average midday irradiance over 28 days was 488 ± 58
μmol photons m−2 s−1. During the pre-main cultivation stage (Stage II), the greatest length increase occurred at 1 m depth (10.9 ± 0.1 cm) with
an average irradiance of 845 ± 169 μmol photons m−2 s−1. For the main cultivation stage (Stage III) of the alga, thalli showed maximal length growth in March and early April at
depths of 1–2 m and 3 m. These results suggest that growth at each cultivation stage of S. fulvellum could be controlled by depth of cultivation rope.

Crop to weed transgene flow, which could result in more competitive weed populations, is an agricultural biosafety concern.
Crop Brassica napus to weedy Brassica rapa hybridization has been extensively characterized to better understand the transgene flow and its consequences. In this study,
weedy accessions of B. rapa were transformed with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cry1Ac- and green fluorescence protein (gfp)-coding transgenes using Agrobacterium to assess ecological performance of the wild biotype relative to introgressed hybrids in which the transgenic parent was
the crop. Regenerated transgenic B. rapa events were characterized by progeny analysis, Bt protein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Southern blot analysis,
and GFP expression assay. GFP expression level and Bt protein concentration were significantly different between independent
transgenic B. rapa events. Similar reproductive productivity was observed in comparison between transgenic B. rapa events and B. rapa × B. napus introgressed hybrids in greenhouse and field experiments. In the greenhouse, Bt transgenic plants experienced significantly
less herbivory damage from the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella). No differences were found in the field experiment under ambient, low, herbivore pressure. Directly transformed transgenic
B. rapa plants should be a helpful experimental control to better understand crop genetic load in introgressed transgenic weeds. 相似文献

An investigation was carried out on the mycorrhizal colonisation, growth and nutrition of two members of the Ericaceae in close proximity to an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) association. This was undertaken by separating mycorrhizal (EM) and non-mycorrhizal (NEM) Erica cinerea and Vaccinium macrocarpon from AM (inoculated by Glomus mosseae) and non-mycorrhizal (NAM) Plantago lanceolata using a 30 µm nylon mesh in a sand culture/pot system. Ericoid mycorrhizal colonisation by Hymenoscyphus ericae on root systems of E. cinerea and V. macrocarpon was in the range 14–22% and 58–69%, respectively. The presence of AM P. lanceolata had no effect on the ericoid mycorrhizal colonisation of E. cinerea and V. macrocarpon. NEM E. cinerea showed reductions in shoot biomass and shoot nitrogen concentrations after exposure to AM P. lanceolata after incubations of 6 and 9 weeks but there were no differences in dry mass, length, and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of the root systems between the treatment combinations. Reductions were also found, after incubations of 6 and 9 weeks, in shoot dry mass, leaf area and shoot nitrogen concentrations of NEM V. macrocarpon in the presence of AM P. lanceolata but no changes occurred in the length and dry mass of the root systems. There were no differences in maximum photosynthesis in V. macrocarpon between treatment combinations but NEM V. macrocarpon in the presence of AM P. lanceolata had the lowest transpiration rates and stomatal conductance and the highest nitrogen- and phosphorus-use efficiencies compared with the other treatment combinations. These results are discussed in relation to the type of interaction found in these compatible and incompatible mycorrhizal associations. 相似文献

Molecular access to amino acid excretion by Corynebacterium glutamicum and Escherichia coli led to the identification of structurally novel carriers and novel carrier functions. The exporters LysE, RhtB, ThrE and BrnFE each represent the protoype of new transporter families, which are in part distributed throughout all of the kingdoms of life. LysE of C. glutamicum catalytes the export of basic amino acids. The expression of the carrier gene is regulated by the cell-internal concentration of basic amino acids. This serves, for example, to maintain homoeostasis if an excess of l-lysine or l-arginine inside the cell should arise during growth on complex media. RhtB is one of five paralogous systems in E. coli, of which at least two are relevant for l-threonine production. A third system is relevant for l-cysteine production. It is speculated that the physiological function of these paralogues is related to quorum sensing. ThrE of C. glutamicum exports l-threonine and l-serine. However, a ThrE domain with a putative hydrolytic function points to an as yet unknown role of this exporter. BrnFE in C. glutamicum is a two-component permease exporting branched-chained amino acids from the cell, and an orthologue in B. subtilis exports 4-azaleucine. 相似文献
