Ultrasound (A-scan mode) and skinfold methods were evaluated in the measurement of subcutaneous fat thickness and prediction of total fat weight (by whole body potassium counting). Based on intraobserver correlations on 39 men at 15 body sites, skinfold caliper measurements were more reproducible than ones obtained by ultrasound. Measurements made with the two techniques at the same site typically produced different mean estimates of fat thickness. However, scores were often highly correlated with each other, indicating similar relative rankings of subjects by each technique. Skinfolds were more highly correlated with total fat weight than were ultrasound measurements, but body weight and anthropometric measures had even higher correlations with total fat weight. Anthropometric measurements were highly correlated with fatness because of their association with body weight, and when this relationship was statistically controlled for, they typically lost their predictive effectiveness. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the best predictors of fat weight were body weight along with skinfold and ultrasound measurements. These results suggest that skinfolds are a more effective means of assessing subcutaneous fat than ultrasound, especially when the large difference in cost of equipment is considered.  相似文献

In a stratified random sample of 278 children aged 7–15 years of an entire biracial community, skinfold measurements were taken on six standard body sites. We found that white children had generally thicker skinfolds than blacks for the same body weight, with a consistent exception: the subscapular skinfold was relatively thicker in blacks. It is suggested that this racial difference in distribution of fat may manifest a genetic adaptive trait developed under circumstances demanding both a caloric reserve and facilitation of convective heat loss in tropical climates.  相似文献

An anthropometric study of 552 Tartu city and Tartu county recruits aged 17 years was carried out. Height and weight, 33 anthropometric measurements and 12 skinfolds were measured. Body fat percentage was assessed by Omron BF 300 hand-held segmental body fat analyzer. From anthropometric measurements bone mass was derived by the Drink-water et al. (1986) equation, and total skeletal muscle mass by the Lee et al. (2000) equation. The data were systematized into five height-weight SD-classes. There were 3 classes with harmony between height and weight class: 1--small (small height and small weight), 2--medium (medium height and medium weight), 3--large (large height and large weight), 4--weight class dominating (pyknomorphic) and 5--height class dominating (leptomorphic). It was revealed that in classes 1, 2 and 3 the height and weight increase corresponded to the increase in all heights, breadths and depths, circumferences, skinfolds, body fat, muscle and bone mass. In class 4 circumferences, skinfolds, body fat and muscle mass were bigger. In class 5 all heights and the relative bone mass were bigger. The present investigation confirms the hypothesis that the five height-weight class system is applicable to seventeen-year-old recruits.  相似文献

The relationships of Quetelet index (w/h2), or body mass index (BMI), with the sum of skinfolds at five sites, two skinfold-corrected limb girths, and two bone breadths were studied in a cross-sectional sample of 12,282 men and 6,593 women aged 20–70 years. The correlations of the BMI with skinfolds (0.50), bone breadths (0.51), and girths (0.58) were too low for individual prediction. Contingency tables of the BMI and sum of skinfold categories further indict its use for the purpose of assessing adiposity status or monitoring change in individuals.  相似文献

Three protocols for measuring subcutaneous fat thickness were compared and their level of association determined in young adults. Subjects included 21 men and 21 women, 18-24 years of age. Skinfold calipers, A- and B-mode ultrasound were used to measure the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer overlying the anterior and posterior aspects of the upper arm. Each protocol was independently administered within a 30-min block of time in a randomly rotated sequence. Significant differences (p less than 0.05) between protocols were observed depending upon site of measurement and gender of the subject. At both the anterior and posterior sites for men, B-mode and halved skinfold were similar but significantly less than A-mode measurements. At the anterior site for women, A-mode and skinfold were similar but significantly greater than B-mode measurements. At the posterior site for women, all three measurements were similar. Correlations between the protocols were positive with men's levels ranging from 0.59 to 0.74, while women's levels were from 0.39 to 0.89. It was concluded that although skinfold calipers, A-mode ultrasound, and B-mode ultrasound may be used to obtain moderately associated measurements of upper-arm subcutaneous fat thickness in young adults, the three protocols yield inconsistently similar data.  相似文献

Body composition is an excellent indicator for assessing obesity and nutritional status of both individuals and populations. Youth obesity has important health and social implications, because a large proportion of adult obesity has its origin in childhood. Numerous studies report that adverse levels of cardiovascular diseases risk factors are associated with adiposity in children. Concerning the Turkish population there is up to now only limited information with regard to adiposity in children. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the anthropometric and body composition characteristics and to investigate sex differences in fat patterning including fat distribution in a group of children living in Ankara. The present study evaluated the body composition of 332 boys and 269 girls aged between 8 and 11 years, attending public schools. It was carried out by a cross-sectional study and was focused on that anthropometric variables, which reflect body fat and fat-free mass. Anthropometric measurements including height, weight, triceps and subscapular skinfolds thickness were carried out on these children. The body mass index (BMI) was also calculated. The measurements were used to estimate the two-compartment model of body composition: fat-free mass (FFM) and body fat (BF) from skinfold equations. The mean fat percentage in boys is highest at 11 years (16.8%) and lowest at 10 years (15.6%). In girls these figures come to 18.2% and 17.1%, respectively. Girls of these age groups have a significantly larger percentage of body fat and skinfold thickness. At this young age there is therefore clear evidence of sexual dimorphism in fat patterning, as girls are showing a greater subcutaneous adiposity, which is mainly contributed by the triceps fat. The body fat (kg) increases in both sexes all over the investigated age groups. The Pearson correlation matrix showed a high significant relation between the anthropometric measurements (p < 0.01). The present study confirms the findings that sexual dimorphism of fat patterning in children is to be seen in the age of 8 - 11 years. It furthermore presents basic data of body composition, which could serve as reference data in other studies on the Turkish population.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This field-based investigation examined the congruence between skinfolds and bioelectrical impedance in assessing body composition in children. METHODS: Subjects were 162 female and 160 male children 10-15 years of age. Skinfold measures obtained at the triceps and medial calf and a leg-to-leg bioelectrical impedance system were used to determine percent fat using child-specific equations. Pearson product moment correlations were performed on the percent fat values obtained using skinfolds and bioelectric impedance for the entire data set. Separate correlations were also conducted on gender and age/gender subsets. Dependent t tests were used to compare the two techniques. RESULTS: Percent fat did not differ between skinfolds and bioelectrical impedance for the total subject pool. Bioelectrical impedance overestimated percent fat in girls by 2.6% and underestimated percent fat in boys by 1.7% (p < 0.01). Correlations between skinfolds and bioelectrical impedance ranged from r = 0.51 to r = 0.90. CONCLUSIONS: Leg-to-leg bioelectrical impedance may be a viable alternative field assessment technique that is comparable to skinfolds. The small differences in percent fat between the two techniques may have limited practical significance in school-based health-fitness settings.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) at the 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase locus and adipose tissue distribution pheno-types. A total of 132 unrelated individuals from the Quebec Family Study were followed prospectively for an average period of 11.3 years. The BglII polymorphism in exon 4 of the 3β-HSD gene was detected by PCR. Body mass, body fat, and regional fat distribution indicators were adjusted for age and age2 within each gender. Associations were assessed in unrelated adults with ANOVA across three genotypes. No association was found for the indicators of body mass, body fat, and regional distribution of adipose tissue measured in 1992. In women, the changes (difference between data collected in 1992 and at entry) in the sum of six skinfolds (p=0.04), abdominal skinfold (p=0.01), and abdominal skinfold adjusted (p=0.03) for the sum of six skinfolds at entry were related to the BglII polymorphism at the 3β-HSD locus. These relations were not found in men, but they gained less body mass and body fat over the 11.3-year period. This suggests that sequence variation at the 3β-HSD locus or in neighboring genes on chromosome 1 may contribute to individual differences in body fat content and adipose tissue distribution in adult women, particularly in abdominal adipose tissue deposition as they grow older and gain body fat.  相似文献

Objectives: This National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study report assesses racial differences in fat patterning in black and white girls ages 9 to 19 years, comparing the sum of triceps and subscapular skinfolds (SSFs) and percentage of body fat (%BF) from impedance as two indices of adiposity. It is hypothesized that racial differences in fat patterning manifest during puberty. Research Methods and Procedures: SSF and %BF were measured annually. Racial differences in SSF and %BF were evaluated by age. Associations between %BF and SSF were evaluated using the Pearson's correlations coefficient. Classification agreement was evaluated using the kappa‐statistic. Effects of pubertal stage and race on classification agreement were examined using multivariate models. Results: White girls had a greater mean %BF at 9 to 12 years of age; black girls had a greater %BF thereafter. Black girls had a greater mean SSF at every age. The correlation coefficient between SSF and %BF was 0.79, and there was good agreement between %BF and SSF in separating high (>85th percentile) from not high (kappa = 0.60 for whites and 0.66 for blacks). SSF associated more with %BF in prepuberty and early puberty than in late puberty. Discussion: Despite good correlations between %BF and SSF, the two methods indicate different fat patterns in black and white girls.  相似文献

Cycles II and III of the Health Examination Survey included measurements of the skinfolds of over 14,000 individuals 6 through 17 years of age, statistically weighted to provide an accurate national probability sample. Analyses of the triceps and subscapular skinfolds of Negroes and whites are reported here, utilizing the median in preference to the mean. Females of either racial group have thicker skinfolds at all ages studied. Whites have greater median triceps thicknesses than Negroes of the same sex and age, but there are no differences between the two racial groups in the subscapular. Since, between all but one pair of adjacent ages in males, from 12 years on, the median triceps fold decreases, but the estimated cross-sectional are of fat increases, it is strongly recommended that reductions in triceps thickness not be automatically interpreted as meaning a loss of subcutaneous fat. Since greater skewness is found in the subscapular distributions in whites, but not in the triceps, it is suggested that racial differences in triceps thickness at these ages occurs from the operation of hereditary factors, while differences in the subscapular skinfold arise from environmental causes.  相似文献

Subcutaneous fat skinfolds represent a reliable assessment instrument of adiposity status. This study provides current percentile references for four subcutaneous skinfolds (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac) applicable to children and adolescents in Spain and in Latin American countries where data are scarce.The design consisted of a cross-sectional multicenter study performed with identical methods in 5 countries (Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela). Total sample comprised 9163 children and youths (boys 4615 - girls 4548) aged 6–18 years, healthy and without apparent pathologies. Percentiles 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, 95 and 97 were calculated by the LMS method. Sexual dimorphism was assessed using the t-test and age differences with ANOVA. Normalized growth percentile references were obtained according to sex and age for each skinfold. The mean values of four skinfolds were significantly greater in girls than boys (p < 0.001) and, in both sexes, all skinfolds show statistical differences through age (p < 0.001) with different magnitudes.Except triceps in girls, peaks between 11 and 12 years of age are more noticeable in boys than in girls. Although the general model of growth is known, the skinfold measurements show variability among populations and differences of magnitude are presented according to the analyzed population. Therefore, these age and sex-specific reference percentile values for biceps, triceps, subscapular and suprailiac skinfolds, derived from a large sample of Spanish and Latin American children and adolescents, are a useful tool for adiposity diagnosis in this population for which no reference values were available.  相似文献

Physical activity levels were measured in obese and non-obese 8- to 12- year-old schoolboys (n=296). Anthropometric measures included weight, height, body mass index (BMI), triceps and subscapular skinfolds, predicted fat percentage, fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), FM index (FMI), and FFM index (FFMI). Physical activity was assessed using an electronic pedometer for three continuous weekdays. Boys were divided into active and inactive groups based on daily accumulation of pedometer counts above or below 13,000 steps. Obesity was defined as body fat content that equals or exceeds 25% of body weight. The international age- and gender-specific child BMI cut-off points were also used to define overweight and obesity. Estimated fat content for the whole sample averaged 23.3+/-9.7%. More than 37% of the boys were classified as obese. The mean step counts were about 13,489+/-5,791 steps per day (range: 335-29,169 steps). Over 71% of the boys accumulated 10,000 steps or more per day. Based on BMI standards, mean step counts for the obese group (10,602+/-4,800 steps/day) were significantly (p=0.004) lower than in the normal group (14,271+/-5,576 steps/day). Based on fat percentage, obese boys also accumulated significantly (p=0.009) lower numbers of steps per day (12,682+/-5,236) than did non-obese boys (14,915+/-5,643). Further, there were significant differences (p<0.05) between active and inactive boys in weight, BMI, triceps and subscapular skinfolds, fat percentage, FMI, and flexibility. It is concluded that the prevalence of obesity and inactivity among Saudi boys aged 8-12 years was high. Active boys exhibited significantly lower body fat percentage and BMI than inactive peers. Obese boys, on the other hand, were significantly less active than non-obese boys. Increased prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity among Saudi children is a major public health concern.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the 2‐year changes in body composition of white and African American boys and girls. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 114 boys and girls ages 12 to 14 years with equal sex and ethnic distribution between African American and white races participated in measurements of body composition using DXA, underwater weighing (densitometry), skinfold thickness, corporal diameters, circumferences, isotope dilution (H218O), and bioelectric impedance. Results: Sixty‐eight of the 114 children advanced from Tanner Stages 1 and 2 to Tanner Stages 3 to 5 over a 2‐year period. More than 50% of the children were in the top 15th percentile according to normative data for body mass index but not for triceps skinfold. All measures except for percentage of fat, density, and four of the six skinfolds increased significantly during the 2 years, with no differences between races, genders, or fat group. The boys who advanced in Tanner Stage reduced their percentage of fat and a number of skinfolds and increased their lean body mass, but the girls did not. The percentage of water was significantly higher in the fatter children and declined significantly over 2 years. Most children remained in the same quartile of body fat, lean body mass, and bone mineral content over 2 years. Discussion: The data are consistent with the hypothesis that over 2 years, growth is the major determinant of changing body composition, with body‐fat group and sexual maturation being additional variables.  相似文献

Differences exist in body composition assessed by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometers (DXAs) between devices produced by different manufacturers and different models from the same manufacturer. Cross‐calibration is needed to allow body composition results to be compared in multicenter trials or when scanners are replaced. The aim was to determine reproducibility and extent of agreement between two fan‐beam DXA scanners (QDR4500W, Discovery Wi) for body composition of regional sites. The sample was: 39 women 50.6 ± 9.6 years old with BMI 26.8 ± 5.5 kg/m2, body fat 33 ± 7%. Four whole body scans (two on each device) were performed over 3 weeks. Major variables were fat mass, nonosseous lean mass, and bone mineral content (BMC) for the truncal and appendicular regions. Extent of agreement was assessed using Bland and Altman plots. Both devices demonstrated good precision with mean test–retest differences close to zero for fat mass, nonosseous lean mass, and BMC of the truncal and appendicular regions. Evaluation of interdevice agreement revealed significant differences for truncal and appendicular BMC, nonosseous lean mass, and fat mass. The greatest interdevice difference was for truncal fat mass (0.69 ± 0.60 kg). Differences in truncal and appendicular fat mass increased in magnitude at higher mean values. Furthermore, differences in truncal and appendicular fat mass were strongly related to BMI (R = ?0.61, R = ?0.55, respectively). In conclusion, in vivo cross‐calibration is important to ensure comparability of regional body composition data between scanners, especially for truncal fat mass and for subjects with higher BMI.  相似文献

Male college students (N = 381) residing in several districts of Eastern India, classified into two groups, urban (N = 193) and rural (N = 188), were studied by anthropometric measurements of skinfold thicknesses in several sites of the body to determine their body fat content. The mean value of percentage of body fat was found to be significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the urban group of students (12.07 ± 3.04) than in the rurals (11.04 ± 2.63). The mean values of skinfold thicknesses of the biceps, triceps, and subscapular regions were also found to be higher in urbans (P < 0.01), but no such significant differences in mean values of supra-iliac and abdominal skinfolds were found between the two groups of students. Most of the subjects of both the groups had a greater thickness of the abdominal skinfold compared to thickness of the biceps, triceps, and suprailiac skinfolds. It was found that the college students of Eastern India were leaner than the youths of North America, Europe, Japan, and Northern India.  相似文献

Morphometric data collected from 118 male and 169 female savannah baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) aged between birth and 5.5 years were analyzed to describe the morphology and physical growth of this species. Measurements included weight, crown-rump length, triceps circumference, and skinfolds at the neck, subscapular, suprailiac, and triceps anatomical sites. Principal components analyses were applied to the data to provide multivariate assessments of morphological patterning among the variables. These analyses resulted in the extraction of two unrotated orthogonal components that accounted for 88% of the overall sample variation. The first component accounted for 77% of the variation and represents an axis of overall body size. The second component represents an axis of shape variation that contrasts body size with fat patterning, and was interpreted as a measure of body leanness. Individual component scores were computed for determining age, gender, and age-by-gender interaction effects. Both components were found to be age dependent for both genders. Males and females shared similar age patterning along the two components; however, gender differences did occur in patterning along the two components; however, gender differences did occur in respect to leanness. The multivariate measure of overall body size increased for both genders similarly with advancing age. Age patterning along the leanness component was described as a decrease from birth to 1 year, followed by an increase in leanness in older ages. Females had a delayed and significantly less intense increase in leanness relative to males.  相似文献

A total of 462 schoolgirls aged 7-8 and 17-18 years were examined anthropometrically (45 body measurements and 10 skinfolds) in a cross-sectional study. The data were processed in two age groups: 7-8-year-olds (n = 205) and 17-18-year-olds (n = 257). Relying on average height and weight in the groups, both groups were divided into five body build classes: small, medium, large, pyknomorphous and leptomorphous. In these classes, the differences in all other body measurements were compared, and in both age groups, analogous systematic differences were found in length, width and depth measurements and circumferences. This enabled us to compare proportional changes in body measurements during ten years, using for this ratios of averages of basic measurements and measurement groups in the same body build classes. Statistical analysis by the sign test revealed statistically significant differences between various body build classes in the growth of averages. Girls belonging to the small class differed from the girls of the large class by an essentially greater increase in their measurements. Our results suggest that the growth rate of body measurements of girls with different body build can be studied by the help of body build classification.  相似文献

Body composition was estimated in 169 young tennis players using the multi-frequency impedance method to predict their fatfree-mass, fat, extra-cellular water, and total body water. Bioelectrical impedances at 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 kHz were determined. Ratios of impedance at low to high frequencies (Z1/Z100; Z5/Z100) were also used as indicators of body water distribution. This sample is characterized by a greater body mass — fat mass, above all-than other Italian sport participants. Sexual dimorphism in body composition is also evident in this sample. The parameters of body composition, predicted by impedance measurements were compared with parameters obtained through other methods (skinfolds and BMI) on the same subjects. Results varied considerably, in relation to the various equations or different techniques employed. Besides demonstrating the value of multifrequency impedance measurements in the assessment of body composition, our findings indicate the necessity of further methodological research to validate the method under controlled conditions.  相似文献

People of South Asian origin (e.g. Indians) usually have a more centralized distribution of body fat with thick trunk skinfolds and markedly higher mean waist circumference (WC) for a given level of body fat percentage compared to Europeans and are exceedingly susceptible to coronary heart disease (CHD) worldwide. Owing to ethnic heterogeneity, population specific information on the interrelationship of fat topography with metabolic and blood pressure measures in different Indian populations is immediately required. In view of the above consideration the present work was undertaken to study the interrelationship of the WC and the sum of four (biceps, triceps, subscapular, suprailiac) skinfolds (SF4) with metabolic and blood pressure variables among the well-off Bengalee men aged 30 years and above from Calcutta and suburbs. The sample of the present study comprises 212 male railway employees of the Eastern Railway, Government of India. All 212 subjects were residents of Calcutta and its suburbs. Anthropometrics, lipids (total cholesterol, fasting triglyceride, high, low and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol), fasting plasma glucose and blood pressure measures were taken from each participant. Two-sample (unpaired) t-test revealed that centrally obese men (waist circumference=90 cm) had significantly greater means compared to centrally non-obese subjects for metabolic risk factors and blood pressure. Inter-tertile comparison of lipids, lipoproteins and glucose revealed that there existed no significant differences in their distribution according to SF4 tertiles. The results of multiple regression analyses (after controlling for the linear, cubic and quadratic effect of age) using waist circumferences and SF4 as independent variables demonstrated the significant effect of central obesity on metabolic and blood pressure variables in the study population. This finding indicated the clinical and physiological importance of central body fat accumulation particularly in and around the waist line in explaining risk factors for chronic diseases, e.g. CHD.  相似文献

Diabetes Alert is a multidisciplinary genetic and epidemiological study of Type II (non insulin-dependent) diabetes in Texas Mexican Americans. We report the anthropometry of 1,155 individuals 10 to 70 or more years with particular reference to overweight, fatness, and anatomical fat patterning in the sample. Children ages 10-18 of both sexes are growing at the 50th percentile of the reference data (U.S. Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-1) for height, Wt/Ht2, and triceps and subscapular skinfolds. Adults are well below median height but well above median Wt/Ht2 and skinfolds. Prevalence of obesity (Wt/Ht2 greater than or equal to 30) among adults is typically 30% or higher by age 30. Diabetics compared to age/sex-matched non diabetics have shorter sitting heights, have more upper body fat (subscapular skinfold), have less lower body fat (lateral calf skinfold), and were heavier at maximum weight and at age 18. The ratio of lower to upper body fat distribution decreases over the life cycle, being highest at adolescence and lowest at ages 40-50 in both sexes. Our results show a precipitous weight gain after maturity in the sample and an association of diabetes with differences in anatomical fat patterning. The age-related changes in fat patterning need to be explained in terms of their ecological and genetic influences.  相似文献
