Objective: Free radicals have been implicated in the etiology of type 2 diabetes. Cross‐sectional studies have demonstrated associations between oxidative damage and type 2 diabetes. However, no prospective data on this association are available. Research Methods and Procedures: A case control study was conducted within the prospective cohort of the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study: 26 cases who developed type 2 diabetes in the follow‐up period and 26 controls who remained free of type 2 diabetes were randomly selected. Oxidative status was assessed by measuring 2, 3‐dinor‐5, 6‐dihydro‐15‐F2t‐isoprostane (F2‐IsoPM) in baseline urine samples using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Type 2 diabetes was defined by serial oral glucose tolerance tests and World Health Organization criteria. Results: Urinary F2‐IsoPM varied between 0.18 and 2.60 ng/mg creatinine; 25th/50th/75th percentiles were 0.42, 0.60, and 0.89, respectively. A trend toward higher levels were observed in women and in persons with impaired glucose tolerance at baseline (p = 0.1). F2‐IsoPM increased with BMI (r = 0.36, p = 0.01). After adjustment for age, gender, baseline impaired glucose tolerance status, and BMI, F2‐IsoPM levels were inversely associated with development of type 2 diabetes: odds ratio = 0.32 (95% confidence interval, 0.12 to 0.81) for the difference between the 75th and 25th percentiles. Discussion: These results suggest that oxidative damage is not a cause of type 2 diabetes. Positive cross‐sectional associations of F2‐IsoPM with the risk factors for diabetes, BMI, and impaired glucose tolerance and inverse associations with development of type 2 diabetes indicate that F2‐IsoPM might reflect a compensatory mechanism.  相似文献

Levels of four urinary F2‐isoprostanes (F2‐IsoPs) were examined in a large sample of the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study (IRAS) multiethnic cohort: 237 African Americans (AAs), 342 non‐Hispanic whites (NHWs), and 275 Hispanic whites (HWs). F2‐IsoP isomers — iPF2a‐III, 2,3‐dinor‐iPF2a‐III, iPF2a‐VI, and 8,12‐iso‐iPF2a‐VI — were measured in 854 urine samples using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection. In AAs, levels of all four F2‐IsoPs were lower compared with NHWs and HWs (P values <0.05). When stratified by BMI, this gap was not observed among participants with normal BMI but appeared among overweight participants and increased among obese participants. Examining the slopes of the associations between BMI and F2‐IsoPs showed no association between these variables among AAs (P values >0.2), and positive associations among whites (P values <0.05). Taking into account that positive cross‐sectional associations between systemic F2‐IsoP levels and BMI have been consistently demonstrated in many study populations, the lack of such an association among AAs reveals a new facet of racial/ethnic differences in obesity‐related risk profiles.  相似文献

Objective: The relationship of visceral adiposity with adipocytokines and low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) particle distribution and oxidation in Asian metabolically obese, normal‐weight (MONW) individuals has not been evaluated. We aimed to investigate the association between visceral adiposity and adipocytokines and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in MONW Korean women with normal glucose tolerance. Methods and Procedures: We examined the metabolic characteristics of 135 non‐obese (BMI <25 kg/m2) women aged 25–64 years. Twenty‐five women (BMI <25 kg/m2 and visceral fat adiposity (VFA) ≥100 cm2) were classified as MONW and 25 women (BMI <25 kg/m2 and VFA <100 cm2), pair‐matched for age, weight, height, and menopausal status, as control group. Plasma lipid profiles and adipocytokines were evaluated in these two groups. Results: MONW subjects had higher systolic (P < 0.05) and diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.005) and higher concentrations of triacylglycerol (TG) (P < 0.005), insulin (P < 0.01), and free fatty acid (FFA) (P < 0.05) than control subjects. There was no significant difference between two groups in LDL‐cholesterol (LDL‐C) concentrations; however, MONW subjects had smaller LDL particles (P < 0.01) and higher concentrations of oxidized LDL (ox‐LDL) (P < 0.05) compared with controls. Moreover, MONW subjects had higher concentrations of tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) (P < 0.05), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) (P < 0.05) and leptin (P < 0.05), and lower plasma adiponectin concentrations (P < 0.05). Higher intake of saturated fat with lower ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to saturated fatty acids (SFA) and lower fiber intake than normal subjects were found in MONW women. Discussion: We found an unfavorable inflammatory profile and a more atherogenic LDL profile in MONW female subjects even in the absence of a known CVD risk factors. Moreover, MONW consumed more saturated fat and less fiber than the control group.  相似文献

Results of studies comparing overall obesity and abdominal adiposity or body fat distribution with risk of mortality have varied considerably. We compared the relative importance and joint association of overall obesity and body fat distribution in predicting risk of mortality. Participants included 5,799 men and 6,429 women aged 30–102 years enrolled in the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who completed a baseline health examination during 1988–1994. During a 12‐year follow‐up (102,172 person‐years), 1,188 men and 925 women died. In multivariable‐adjusted analyses, waist‐to‐thigh ratio (WTR) in both sexes (Ptrend <0.01 for both) and waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) in women (Ptrend 0.001) were positively associated with mortality in middle‐aged adults (30–64 years), while BMI and waist circumference (WC) exhibited U‐ or J‐shaped associations. Risk of mortality increased with a higher WHR and WTR among normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2) adults. In older adults (65–102 years), a higher BMI in both sexes (Ptrend <0.05) and WC in men (Ptrend 0.001) were associated with increased survival, while remaining measures of body fat distribution exhibited either no association or an inverse relation with mortality. In conclusion, ratio measures of body fat distribution are strongly and positively associated with mortality and offer additional prognostic information beyond BMI and WC in middle‐aged adults. A higher BMI in both sexes and WC in men were associated with increased survival in older adults, while a higher WHR or WTR either decreased or did not influence risk of death.  相似文献

For women, menopausal transition is a time of significant hormonal changes, which may contribute to altered body composition and regional adipose tissue accumulation. Excess adiposity, and especially adipose tissue accumulation in the central body region, increases women''s risk of cardiovascular and metabolic conditions and affects physical functioning. We investigated the associations between menopausal progression and total and regional body adiposity measured with dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry and computed tomography in two longitudinal cohort studies of women aged 47–55 (n = 230 and 148, mean follow‐up times 1.3 ± 0.7 and 3.9 ± 0.2 years, mean baseline BMI 25.5 kg/m2). We also examined associations between menopausal progression and skeletal muscle fiber characteristics, as well as adipose tissue‐derived adipokines. Relative increases of 2%–14% were observed in regional and total body adiposity measures, with a pronounced fat mass increase in the android area (4% and 14% during short‐ and long‐term follow‐ups). Muscle fiber oxidative and glycolytic capacities and intracellular adiposity were not affected by menopause, but were differentially correlated with total and regional body adiposity at different menopausal stages. Menopausal progression and regional adipose tissue masses were positively associated with serum adiponectin and leptin, and negatively associated with resistin levels. Higher diet quality and physical activity level were also inversely associated with several body adiposity measures. Therefore, healthy lifestyle habits before and during menopause might delay the onset of severe metabolic conditions in women.  相似文献

Objective: This study aims to examine the association between various measures of adiposity and all‐cause mortality in Swedish middle‐aged and older men and women and, additionally, to describe the influences of age and sex on these associations. Research Methods and Procedures: A prospective analysis was performed in a cohort of 10,902 men and 16,814 women ages 45 to 73 years who participated in the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study in Sweden. Baseline examinations took place between 1991 and 1996, and 982 deaths were documented during an average follow‐up of 5.7 years. All‐cause mortality was related to the following variables measured at baseline: body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat, lean body mass (LBM), and waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR), with adjustment for age and selected covariates. Body composition data were derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: The association between percentage of body fat and mortality was modified by age, particularly in women. For instance, fatness was associated with excess mortality in the younger women but with reduced mortality in the older women. Weaker associations were seen for BMI than for percentage of body fat in both sexes. Placement in the top quintiles of waist‐to‐hip ratio, independent of overall body fat, was a stronger predictor of mortality in women than in men. The observed associations could not be explained by bias from early death or antecedent disease. Discussion: The findings reveal sex and age differences for the effects of adiposity and WHR on mortality and indicate the importance of considering direct measures of adiposity, as opposed to BMI, when describing obesity‐related mortality risks.  相似文献

Objective: This study examined the effects of exercise on metabolic risk variables insulin, leptin, glucose, and triglycerides in overweight/obese postmenopausal women. Research Methods and Procedures: Sedentary women (n = 173) who were overweight or obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 or ≥24 kg/m2 with ≥33% body fat), 50 to 75 years of age, were randomized to 12 months of exercise (≥45 minutes of moderate‐intensity aerobic activity 5 d/wk) or to a stretching control group. Body composition (DXA) and visceral adiposity (computed tomography) were measured at baseline and 12 months. Insulin, glucose, triglycerides, and leptin were measured at baseline and 3 and 12 months. Insulin resistance was evaluated by the homeostasis model assessment formula. Differences from baseline to follow‐up were calculated and compared across groups. Results: Exercisers had a 4% decrease and controls had a 12% increase in insulin concentrations from baseline to 12 months (p = 0.0002). Over the same 12‐month period, leptin concentrations decreased by 7% among exercisers compared with remaining constant among controls (p = 0.03). Homeostasis model assessment scores decreased by 2% among exercisers and increased 14% among controls from baseline to 12 months (p = 0.0005). The exercise effect on insulin was modified by changes in total fat mass (trend, p = 0.03), such that the exercise intervention abolished increases in insulin concentrations associated with gains in total fat mass. Discussion: Regular moderate‐intensity exercise can be used to improve metabolic risk variables such as insulin and leptin in overweight/obese postmenopausal women. These results are promising for health care providers providing advice to postmenopausal women for lifestyle changes to reduce risk of insulin resistance, coronary heart disease, and diabetes.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether racial differences exist in the relationship of the abnormalities defining the metabolic syndrome (MS) to regional adiposity and fat cell size (FCS) in obese postmenopausal women. Research Methods and Procedures: We determined the relationship of metabolic variables associated with the MS to regional body composition and abdominal (ABD) and gluteal (GLT) FCS in 25 white (CAU) and 25 African‐American (AF‐AMER) older women matched for age (58 ± 5 years; mean ± SD) and BMI (35 ± 4 kg/m2). Results: MS was present in 36% of the AF‐AMER and 57% of the CAU women. There were no differences in total body, trunk, gluteofemoral fat mass or regional FCS, but AF‐AMER women had 22% lower visceral fat, 24% higher insulin, and 31% lower triglyceride levels than CAU women (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis with body fat, visceral ABD fat area, and FCS as independent variables showed that GLT FCS was independently correlated with 2‐hour insulin (r = 0.56), triglyceride (r = 0.62), and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = ?0.72) levels in AF‐AMER women but not in CAU women, where only systolic blood pressure correlated with subcutaneous ABD fat area (r = 0.57) (p < 0.05). Discussion: The associations between GLT FCS and metabolic dysfunction in obese AF‐AMER but not CAU women suggest that central obesity is a less valid predictor of the MS in obese postmenopausal AF‐AMER women than in CAU women and that GLT FCS may be a more sensitive indicator of risk for the MS in AF‐AMER women.  相似文献

Objective: To examine associations between eating frequency (EF) and body fatness in pre‐ and postmenopausal women, after excluding potential low‐energy reporters. Research Methods and Procedures: In this cross‐sectional study of 220 free‐living women, 64 pre‐ and 50 postmenopausal non‐low‐energy‐reporting women were further analyzed (age, 24 to 74 years; BMI, 18.5 to 38.6 kg/m2). Anthropometric and body composition measurements (DXA) were performed in all study participants. EF, energy, and macronutrient intake were assessed by 3‐day food record. Physical activity level and energy expenditure were assessed by self‐reported questionnaire. Results: No association between EF and adiposity indices was detected in premenopausal women. In contrast, EF was positively correlated with percentage body fat in postmenopausal women (r = 0.30, p = 0.03). EF was positively correlated with total energy intake in both groups and with total energy expenditure in premenopausal women only (r = 0.34, p = 0.02). Multivariate analysis revealed that, in postmenopausal women, EF was a significant predictor of body fatness (standardized β = 0.41, p = 0.01). Discussion: Frequent eating was not found to be related to adiposity in premenopausal women, but it was associated with increased body fat in postmenopausal women. Possible explanations could be that the frequent eating is not associated with a physically active lifestyle in postmenopausal women or that frequent eating predisposes women after menopause to a higher energy intake by increasing food stimuli and rendering it more difficult for them to control energy balance.  相似文献

Objective: A number of candidate genes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity in humans. This study examines associations between longitudinal changes in body mass and composition and the presence of polymorphisms in the β‐3 adrenergic receptor, tumor necrosis factor‐α, leptin, and leptin receptor (Lepr) in a cohort of Australian women. Research Methods and Procedures: Healthy white Australian women (n = 335) were randomly selected from the Barwon region of Victoria and underwent baseline anthropometry and double‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry for assessment of body mass and adiposity. These measurements were repeated again at 2‐year follow‐up. Genomic DNA was extracted and used for polymerase chain reaction‐based genotyping of all polymorphisms. Results: The Pro1019Pro Lepr polymorphism was associated with longitudinal increases in body weight (p = 0.02), fat mass (p = 0.05), and body mass index (p = 0.01) in this study, and individuals homozygous for the A allele at this locus had a greater propensity to gain body fat over time. The largest effects on body composition seemed to be in individuals already obese at baseline. Changes in body weight, fat mass, percent body fat, and body mass index over a 2‐year period were not associated with genetic variation in the β‐3 adrenergic receptor (Trp64Arg), tumor necrosis factor‐α promoter, or leptin genes in non‐obese or obese women. Discussion: These results suggest that a Lepr polymorphism is involved in the regulation of body mass and adiposity in obese Australian white women, which may have implications for the treatment of obesity in this population.  相似文献

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is higher among African Americans (AA) vs. European Americans (EA), is highest at middle age, and is related to obesity. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the association of adiposity (percent body fat (%fat)) with indexes of insulin sensitivity (SI) and β‐cell function would differ with ethnicity and age. Subjects were 168 healthy, normoglycemic AA and EA girls and women aged 7–12 years, 18–32 years, and 40–70 years. An intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was used to assess indexes of insulin secretion and action: SI, acute C‐peptide secretion (X0); basal, first‐phase, second‐phase, and total β‐cell responsivity to glucose (PhiB, Phi1, Phi2, and PhiTOT, respectively); and the disposition index (DI = SI × PhiTOT). %Fat was assessed with dual energy X‐ray absorptiometrys. Adiposity was significantly associated with SI among EA (?0.57, P < 0.001) but not AA (?0.20, P = 0.09). Adiposity appeared stimulatory to β‐cell function in the two groups of younger subjects and in EA, but inhibitory in postmenopausal women, particularly AA postmenopausal women. Among AA postmenopausal women, %fat was inversely associated with Phi1 (r = ?0.57, P < 0.05) and PhiTOT (r = ?0.68, P < 0.01). These results suggest that the impact of adiposity on insulin secretion and action differs with age and ethnicity.  相似文献

Objective: To compare estimates of total and truncal fatness from eight‐electrode bioelectrical impedance analysis equipment (BIA8) with those from DXA in centrally obese women. The secondary aim was to examine BMI and waist circumference (WC) as proxy measures for percentage total body fat (%TBF) and truncal body fat percentage (tr%BF). Research Methods and Procedures: This was a cross‐sectional study of 136 women (age, 48.1 ± 7.7 years; BMI, 30.4 ± 2.9 kg/m2; %TBFDXA, 46.0 ± 3.7%; WC, 104 ± 8 cm). Fatness was measured by DXA and Tanita BC‐418 equipment (Tanita Corp., Tokyo, Japan). Agreement among methods was assessed by Bland‐Altman plots, and regression analysis was used to evaluate anthropometric measures as proxies for total and abdominal fatness. Results: The percentage of overweight subjects was 41.9%, whereas 55.9% of the subjects were obese, as defined by BMI, and all subjects had a WC exceeding the World Health Organization cut‐off point for abdominal obesity. Compared with DXA, the BIA8 equipment significantly underestimated total %BF (?5.0; ?3.6 to ?8.5 [mean; 95% confidence interval]), fat mass (?3.6; ?3.9 to ?3.2), and tr%BF (?8.5; ?9.1 to ?7.9). The discrepancies between the methods increased with increasing adiposity for both %TBF and tr%BF (both p < 0.001). Variation in BMI explained 28% of the variation in %TBFDXA and 51% of %TBFBIA8. Using WC as a proxy for truncal adiposity, it explained only 18% of tr%BFDXA variance and 27% of tr%BFBIA8 variance. The corresponding figures for truncal fat mass were 49% and 35%, respectively. No significant age effects were observed in any of the regressions. Discussion: BIA8 underestimated both total and truncal fatness, compared with DXA, with higher dispersion for tr%BF than %TBF. The discrepancies increased with degree of adiposity, suggesting that the accuracy of BIA is negatively affected by obesity.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the familial resemblance of 7‐year changes in body mass and adiposity among Canadian families. Research Methods and Procedures: The sample consisted of 655 women and 660 men from 521 families who participated in the Canada Fitness Survey in 1981 and the follow‐up Campbell's Survey in 1988. Indicators of baseline and 7‐year changes in body mass and adiposity included body mass (kilograms), body mass index (BMI; kilograms per square meter), sum of five skinfolds (SF5; millimeters), and waist circumference (WC; millimeters). The data were adjusted for the effects of age and sex, and the change scores were adjusted for baseline levels. A familial correlation model was used to determine the heritability of each phenotype using maximum likelihood techniques. Results: Significant familial resemblance was observed at baseline and for 7‐year changes in all phenotypes. At baseline, moderate heritabilities were observed [body mass: heritability coefficient (h2) = 56%; BMI, h2 = 39%; SF5, h2 = 41%; and WC, h2 = 39%], whereas values were attenuated for each change score except for WC (Δbody mass, h2 = 23%; ΔBMI, h2 = 14%; ΔSF5, h2 = 12%; and ΔWC, h2 = 45%). Discussion: Changes in body mass and adiposity significantly aggregate within families over 7 years. However, baseline values are characterized by higher heritability levels except WC. The significant heritabilities observed for change scores suggest that lifestyle, transient environmental factors, and possibly age‐related gene effects are important determinants of changes in body mass and adiposity.  相似文献

Objective: To assess in women whether age‐related increases in adiposity are dependent on exercise, and, contrariwise, whether exercise‐related declines in adiposity are dependent on age. Research Methods and Procedures: Cross‐sectional analyses were conducted of 41, 582 female runners. Results: Age affected the relationships between vigorous exercise and adiposity. The decline in BMI per kilometer per week run was linear in 18 to 23 year olds and became increasingly non‐linear (convex) with age. Waist, hip, and chest circumferences declined significantly with running distance across all age groups, but the declines were significantly greater in older than younger women, particularly among shorter distance runners. The relationships between body circumferences and running distance became increasingly convex in older women. Conversely, vigorous exercise diminished the apparent increase in adiposity with age. The increase in average BMI with age was greatest in women who ran <8 km/wk, intermediate in women who ran 8 to 15 km/wk or 16 to 31 km/wk, and least in those who averaged over 32 km/wk. Before age 45, waist circumference rose for those who ran 0 to 7 km/wk, showed no significant relationship to age for those who ran 8 to 39 km/wk, and declined in those who ran 40 to 55 and 56 km/wk and more. Age related‐increases in hip and chest circumferences before 45 years old were significantly less in women who ran longer weekly distances. Discussion: These cross‐sectional associations are consistent with the hypothesis that exercise may mitigate age‐related increases in adiposity and that age affects exercise‐induced reductions in adiposity (although causality remains to be determined experimentally).  相似文献

Response of two Antarctic bryophytes to stratospheric ozone depletion   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We report a study which measured changes to the radiative environment arising from stratospheric O3 depletion at Rothera Point on the western Antarctic Peninsula (67°S, 68°W) and subsequent associations between these changes and the pigmentation and maximum quantum yield of photochemistry (Fv/Fm) of two Antarctic bryophytes, the liverwort Cephaloziella varians and the moss Sanionia uncinata. We found a strong relationship between O3 column depth and the ratio of UV‐B to PAR irradiance (FUV‐B/FPAR) recorded at ground level. Weaker, but significant, associations were also found between O3 column depth and noon irradiances and daily doses of unweighted and biologically effective UV‐B radiation received at ground level. Regression analyses indicated that FUV‐B/FPAR and daily dose of unweighted UV‐B were best predictors for concentrations of total carotenoids and UV‐B screening pigments extracted from bryophyte tissues. Concentrations of these pigments were loosely but significantly positively associated with O3‐dependent irradiance parameters. HPLC analyses of carotenoids also suggested that both species increased the synthesis of neoxanthin during periods of O3 depletion. Violaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and b,bββ‐carotene concentrations were also apparently influenced by O3 reduction, but not consistently across both bryophyte species. Concentrations of chlorophylls a and b were apparently unaffected by O3 depletion. No direct associations between Fv/Fm and O3‐dependent irradiance parameters were found. However stepwise multiple regression analyses suggested that the production of UV‐B screening pigments conferred protection from elevated FUV‐B/FPAR on Fv/Fm in both species and that carotenoids conferred protection on Fv/Fm in Sanionia. Our data suggest that changes to the radiative environment associated with stratospheric O3 depletion influence the pigmentation of two Antarctic bryophytes, but that Fv/Fm is unaffected, at least in part because of rapid synthesis of protective pigments.  相似文献

Objective: Retinol binding protein‐4 (RBP4) has been reported to impair insulin sensitivity throughout the body. We investigated the relationship between serum RBP4 levels and adiposity indices as well as metabolic risk variables. Research Methods and Procedure: We recruited a total of 102 healthy women 21 to 67 years old. We assessed body composition by computed tomography and divided the study population into four groups based on body weight and visceral fat area (non‐obese without visceral adiposity, non‐obese with visceral adiposity, obese without visceral adiposity, and obese with visceral adiposity). Serum RBP4 levels were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: Despite similar levels of total body fat, non‐obese women had lower systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), low‐density lipoprotein (LDL)‐cholesterol levels, insulin resistance indices, and RBP4 levels than non‐obese women with visceral adiposity and had higher high‐density lipoprotein‐cholesterol levels. Similarly, obese women without visceral adiposity had lower blood pressure, total cholesterol, TG levels, insulin resistance indices, and RBP4 levels than obese women with visceral adiposity. In addition, despite having increased body fat, obese women without visceral adiposity had lower TGs, insulin resistance indices, and serum RBP4 levels than non‐obese women with visceral adiposity. By step‐wise multiple regression analysis, visceral fat areas and LDL‐cholesterol levels independently affected RBP4 levels. Discussion: We determined that serum RBP4 levels are independently associated with visceral fat and LDL‐cholesterol levels. These results suggest that, irrespective of body weight, visceral obesity is an independent predictor of serum RBP4 levels, and RBP4 may represent a link between visceral obesity and cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

Measures of obesity, especially central adiposity, have been associated with reduced lung function. However, previous studies may have been affected by confounding by physical activity and fitness. This study aimed to examine the relationship among body fatness, fat distribution, and lung function, adjusted for physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and aerobic fitness (VO2max), in a cohort of British white adults with a family history of type 2 diabetes. A total of 320 adults (mean age 40.4 ± 6.0 years) attended for anthropometric and VO2max testing, and had ambulatory heart rate monitoring for 4 days to determine PAEE. Spirometry was used to measure forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). The tests were repeated 12 months later, and a cross‐sectional analysis using linear regression with repeated measures was performed. Measures of obesity (BMI, waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), body fat percentage (BF%)) were associated with lower lung function in men and women (P < 0.01), while waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) was associated with lower lung function in men only (P < 0.001). Associations remained after adjusting for age, smoking status, height, PAEE, and VO2max. The estimated difference in mean FEV1 and FVC per unit increase in the exposure measures were consistently stronger in men compared to women (P for interaction <0.001). Obesity is inversely associated with lung function in adults, but central fat distribution appears to have a stronger relationship with respiratory mechanics in men than in women. These associations were independent of the degree of physical activity and aerobic fitness in this cohort.  相似文献

Objective: Abdominal fat and myocyte triglyceride levels relate negatively to insulin sensitivity, but their interrelationships are inadequately characterized in the overweight. Using recent methods for measuring intramyocyte triglyceride, these relationships were studied in men with a broad range of adiposity. Research Methods and Procedures: Myocyte triglyceride content (1H‐magnetic resonance spectroscopy of soleus and tibialis anterior muscles and biochemical assessment of vastus lateralis biopsies), regional fat distribution (DXA and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging), serum lipids, insulin action (euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp), and substrate oxidation rates (indirect calorimetry) were measured in 39 nondiabetic men (35.1 ± 7.8 years) with a broad range of adiposity (BMI 28.6 ± 4.1 kg/m2, range 20.1 to 37.6 kg/m2). Results: Relationships between insulin‐stimulated glucose disposal and regional body fat depots appeared more appropriately described by nonlinear than linear models. When the group was subdivided using median total body fat as the cut‐point, insulin‐stimulated glucose disposal correlated negatively to all regional body fat measures (all p ≤ 0.004), serum triglycerides and free fatty acids (p < 0.02), and both soleus intramyocellular lipid (p = 0.003) and vastus lateralis triglyceride (p = 0.04) in the normal/less overweight group. In contrast, only visceral abdominal fat showed significant negative correlation with insulin‐stimulated glucose disposal in more overweight men (r = ?0.576, p = 0.01), some of whom surprisingly had lower than expected myocyte lipid levels. These findings persisted when the group was subdivided using different cut‐points or measures of adiposity. Discussion: Interrelationships among body fat depots, myocyte triglyceride, serum lipids, and insulin action are generally absent with increased adiposity. However, visceral abdominal fat, which corresponds less closely to total adiposity, remains an important predictor of insulin resistance in men with both normal and increased adiposity.  相似文献

Temporal trends in growth of the rusty parrotfish Scarus ferrugineus were studied on a southern Red Sea fringing reef that experiences seasonal changes in environmental conditions and benthic algal resources. Length increment data from tagging and recapture were compared among periods and sexes and modelled using GROTAG, a von Bertalanffy growth model. The growth pattern of S. ferrugineus was highly seasonal with a maximum occurring between April and June and a minimum between December and March. Body condition followed the seasonal variation in growth, increasing from April to June and decreasing from December to March. The season of maximum growth coincided with high irradiation, temperature increases and peak abundance of the primary food source, the epilithic algal community. There was a decline in growth rate during summer (July to October) associated with a combination of extreme temperatures and lowered food availability. There were strong sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and life‐history traits. Terminal‐phase (TP) males achieved larger asymptotic lengths than initial‐phase individuals (IP) (L 34·55 v. 25·12 cm) with growth coefficients (K) of 0·26 and 0·38. The TPs were growing four times as fast as IPs of similar size. Three individuals changed from IP to TP while at liberty and grew eight times faster than IPs of similar size, suggesting that sex change in S. ferrugineus is accompanied by a surge in growth rate. The SSD in S. ferrugineus thus coincided with fast growth that started during sex change and continued into the TP. Faster growth during sex change suggests that the cost associated with sex change is limited.  相似文献
