Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae alates were collected from colonised winter cereals and maize in N.E. Spain and fed on young wheat plants for 7–10 days in the glasshouse. Then, aphids were killed and the plants on which aphids reproduced were kept in the glasshouse for 30–40 days. ELISA of infested plants was made using polyclonal and monoclonal antisera against PAV-, RPV- and MAV-like isolates. In autumn and spring, MAV serotypes were transmitted by S. avenae and R. padi , mainly in mixed infections with PAV serotypes. This possibly explains the high frequency of MAV-like isolates and their previously recorded year-to-year stability in maize, grain and forage winter cereals and cereal volunteers. PAV-like isolates were rarely transmitted by S. avenae and its spread thus depends almost exclusively on R. padi. These results confirm the importance of forage cereals and cereal volunteers as virus sources for winter cereal infection in the autumn, and the latter as a source of BYDV for maize in spring.  相似文献

In 1978, 1979 and 1980, counts were made of the numbers of cereal aphids on a maize crop near Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England. Maize plants were selected away from the edge of the crop and the number, morph, species and feeding site of the aphids were recorded. Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopalosiphum padi were found at densities that exceeded those found on small-grain cereals and grasses at the same time of the year. Sitobion avenae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae were found at relatively low densities, and Rhopalosiphum maidis and Metopolophium festucae were observed rarely. Unlike other species, the numbers of R. padi continued to increase throughout the summer and reached a peak in September/October; at this time of the year, R. padi constituted over 98% of the aphids found on maize. M. dirhodum and S. avenae were found mostly on the leaves whereas R. padi appeared to favour the cob until populations became too large to be supported. If the area of maize grown in the UK increases, the crop will probably play an important role in the life cycle of cereal aphids (especially R. padi ). It is suggested that further work should be carried out on the pest status of aphids on maize and on the role that maize may play in the ecology of cereal pests.  相似文献

This study investigated the impact of transgenic wheat expressing Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA), commonly known as snowdrop lectin, on three wheat aphids: Sitobion avenae (F.), Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). We compared the feeding behavior and the life-table parameters of aphids reared on GNA transgenic wheat (test group) and those aphids reared on untransformed wheat (control group). The results showed that the feeding behaviors of S. avenae and S. graminum on GNA transgenic wheat were affected. Compared with the control group, they had shorter initial probing period, longer total nonprobing period, shorter initial and total phloem sap ingestion phase (waveform E2), shorter duration of sustained ingestion (E (pd) > 10 min), and lower percentage of phloem phase of the total observation time. Moreover, S. graminum made more probes and had a longer total duration of extracellular stylet pathway (waveform C). The fecundity and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r(m)) of S. avenae and S. graminum on the transgenic wheat were lowered in the first and second generations, however, the survival and lifespan were not affected. The effects of the GNA expressing wheat on S. graminum and S. avenae were not significant in the third generation, suggesting rapid adaptation by the two aphid species. Despite the impact we found on S. avenae and S. graminum, transgenic GNA expressing wheat did not have any effects on R. padi.  相似文献

Yield loss in soft red winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L., caused by aphid-transmitted barley yellow dwarf virus (family Luteoviridae, genus Luteovirus, BYDV) was measured over a 2-yr period in central Missouri. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was the most common and economically important species, accounting for > 90% of the total aphids. Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), and Sitobion avenae (F.) made up the remainder of the aphids. Aphid numbers peaked at wheat stem elongation in 2003 with 771 R. padi per meter-row. In the 2003-2004 growing season, aphid numbers averaged seven aphids per meter-row in the fall and peaked at 18 aphids per meter-row at jointing. Wheat grain yield was reduced 17 and 13% in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Thousand kernel weights were reduced 10 and 5% in the untreated plots compared with the treated control in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Padi avenae virus was the predominate strain, accounting for 81 and 84% of the symptomatic plots that tested positive for BYDV in 2003 and 2004. Our results indicate that economic thresholds for R. padi are 16 aphids per meter-row in the fall and 164 aphids per meter-row at jointing.  相似文献

The fecundity of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi during the first ten days of reproduction was measured on five wheats at three growth stages. The wheats were of UK and Iranian origin, but also involved both spring and winter wheats as well as hexaploid and tetraploid types. Aphids which had already been reared on the respective variety for at least one generation were transferred to the experimental plants. The tetraploid Emmer showed some resistance in comparison with the hexaploid UK varieties at later growth stages, whereas the Iranian variety Moghan 2 appeared relatively resistant only at the tillering stage. The other Iranian variety, Ommid, was resistant at all growth stages, and appears to be the most resistant hexaploid wheat variety to R. padi so far identified. Correlations of aphid fecundity with plant chemistry were attempted with total phenolic compounds, hydroxamic acids and amino acids. All three of these chemical groups have previously been reported as correlated with plant resistance to cereal aphids. Even just for the results at the tillering stage, no correlation could be found for phenolics or hydroxamic acids, but a multiple regression based on the levels of alanine, histidine and threonine accounted for over 95% of the variation in aphid fecundity at all 15 data points (5 wheats × 3 growth stages). Abstract:  The quality of two aphid species ( Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion avenae ) as food for the staphylinid generalist predator Tachyporus hypnorum was investigated. Fruit flies ( Drosophila melanogaster ) were used as prey for comparison. T. hypnorum has been reported to prey on aphids, to consume large quantities and to show a high preference for aphids. This study showed that compared with fruit flies aphids are not high-quality prey for neither adult females nor larvae of T. hypnorum . Larvae were less able to utilize aphids than adult females. Reproduction was affected by both aphid species; a diet of S. avenae reduced fecundity, and a diet of R. padi reduced egg hatching success and prolonged the time spent in the egg stage compared with a fruit fly diet. For the T. hypnorum larvae pure diets of both S. avenae and R. padi resulted in high larval mortality. Overall ranking of the three prey types based on several fitness parameters differed between larvae and adults. The adult fitness parameters gave rather conflicting rankings of all three prey types though the two aphid species were of approximately the same overall value, whereas the larval fitness parameters gave identical rankings: D. melanogaster  >  S. avenae  >  R. padi . In the larval stage survival was greatly reduced by both aphid diets, while this was not the case for the adult females.  相似文献

Three aphid species were compared with respect to ability of enhancing the nutritional quality of their host plants. Rhopalosiphum padi, which does not induce macroscopic changes in its host plants, was compared with Schizaphis graminum and Diuraphis noxia, both of which induce distinctive types of chlorotic lesions. Phloem sap samples were collected from severed stylets of feeding aphids and from exudates of cut leaves of plants uninfested or infested with each aphid species. Samples were analyzed for concentrations of individual amino acids.Compared to R. padi, S. graminum ingested phloem sap with a two-fold higher concentration of amino acids and a much higher proportion of essential amino acids. Similar differences between these two aphid species were observed on both wheat and barley. For each aphid species, the absolute concentrations of amino acids and the relative proportions of essential amino acids were similar between the two host plants. Effects of D. noxia were similar to those of S. graminum, though less dramatic. Exudates from leaves infested with each aphid species showed relative concentrations of individual amino acids that were similar to those in the corresponding stylet exudates. Based on comparison of stylet exudates and cut leaf exudates from infested and uninfested plants, R. padi seems to have little effect on amino acid composition of phloem. Changes in the phloem induced by both S. graminum and D. noxia appear to be systemic, affecting at least the whole leaf they are feeding on. The changes observed for D. noxia and for S. graminum are likely to be nutritionally advantageous for the aphids and are expected to affect the aphids' dependence on nutritional supplementation by intracellular symbionts (Buchnera).  相似文献

选用经田间鉴定抗蚜性表现不同的10个小麦品种,在室内外较系统地研究了其对禾谷缢管蚜和麦长管蚜存活、生长发育和生殖的影响,分析了室内外试验结果的相关性.结果表明,小麦品种的抗生性并不能造成若蚜个体的直接死亡,但对若蚜发育历期、成蚜寿命和产仔数影响显著,差异均达极显著水平或显著水平.其中对两种蚜虫若蚜发育历期的影响室内外表现了较好的一致性,可作为小麦品种抗蚜性鉴定的主要指标;其次是对成蚜产仔数的影响,禾谷缢管蚜室内外试验结果比较的吻合性也较好  相似文献

测定麦蚜为害后对小麦产量和品质的影响,结果表朗:麦蚜为害后,可使小麦穗粒数减少18.60%,千粒重下降45.24%,机位数达到30.19%。为害性表现为小麦灌浆前期六于灌浆中后期。小麦灌浆后期,由于蚜虫的为害,面粉中的氨基酸总量和主要氨基酸含量、维生素B1和维生素C含量明显下降。  相似文献

This study was designed to categorize the resistance to the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), resistant hard red winter wheat, Halt, as compared with susceptible wheat, TAM 107, at four different growth stages. Antixenosis was expressed in Halt at growth stage Zadoks 30. Antibiosis in Halt affected fecundity, number of aphids produced per reproductive day, maximum number of nymphs produced in one day, and intrinsic rate of increase. Fecundity was lower on Halt than TAM 107, and more nymphs were produced on both varieties at growth stage 20 than 10 and 40. Fewer nymphs were produced per reproductive day and on maximum production days by aphids reared on Halt than by those reared on TAM 107. The intrinsic rate of increase of Russian wheat aphids reared on Halt was lower than aphids reared on TAM 107. Differences in plant height and plant dry weight did not occur. Chlorosis ratings showed greater damage at the earlier stages in Halt and TAM 107 and significantly more damage in TAM 107 than Halt at growth stages 10, 20, and 30. Leaf rolling occurred on infested plants of TAM 107 at growth stages 10, 20, and 30, but not growth stage 40. Halt plants did not exhibit leaf rolling. The presence of a significant level of tolerance could make Halt compatible with other integrated pest management programs. However, care should be taken with cultivars containing evidence of antixenosis or antibiosis that could cause selective pressure on the Russian wheat aphid, potentially causing biotypes to be produced.  相似文献

The impact of the leaf-chlorosis-eliciting Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), and the nonchlorosis-eliciting bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), feeding on D. noxia-susceptible and -resistant cereals was examined during the period (i.e., 3, 6, and 9 d after aphid infestation) that leaf chlorosis developed. After aphid number, leaf rolling and chlorosis ratings, and fresh leaf weight were recorded on each sampling date, total protein content, peroxidase, catalase, and polyphenol oxidase activities of each plant sample were determined spectrophotometrically. Although R. padi and D. noxia feeding caused significant increase of total protein content in comparison with the control cereal leaves, the difference in total protein content between R. padi and D. noxia-infested leaves was not significant. Although R. padi-feeding did not elicit any changes of peroxidase specific activity in any of the four cereals in comparison with the control leaves, D. noxia feeding elicited greater increases of peroxidase specific activity only on resistant 'Halt' wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and susceptible 'Morex' barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), but not on susceptible 'Arapahoe' and resistant 'Border' oat (Avena sativa L.). D. noxia-feeding elicited a ninefold increase in peroxidase specific activity on Morex barley and a threefold on Halt wheat 9 d after the initial infestation in comparison with control leaves. Furthermore, D. noxia feeding did not elicit any differential changes of catalase and polyphenol oxidase activities in comparison with either R. padi feeding or control leaves. The findings suggest that D. noxia feeding probably results in oxidative stress in plants. Moderate increase of peroxidase activity (approximately threefold) in resistant Halt compared with susceptible Arapahoe wheat might have contributed to its resistance to D. noxia, whereas the ninefold peroxidase activity increase may have possibly contributed to barley's susceptibility. Different enzymatic responses in wheat, barley, and oat to D. noxia and R. padi feeding indicate the cereals have different mechanisms of aphid resistance.  相似文献

The life history of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was monitored on transgenic and untransformed (soft white winter wheat plants that were infected with Barley yellow dwarf virus (BLDV), noninfected, or challenged with virus-free aphids under laboratory conditions. Two transgenic soft white winter wheat genotypes (103.1J and 126.02) derived from the parental variety Lambert and expressing the barley yellow dwarf virus coat protein gene, and two untransformed varieties, virus-susceptible Lambert and virus-tolerant Caldwell, were tested. B. padi nymphal development was significantly longer on the transgenic genotypes infected with BYDV, compared with noninfected transgenic plants. In contrast, nymphal development on Lambert was significantly shorter on BYDV-infected than on noninfected plants. Nymphal development on noninfected Lambert was significantly longer than on noninfected transgenics. No significant difference in nymphal development period was detected between virus-infected and noninfected Caldwell. Aphid total fecundity, length of reproductive period, and intrinsic rate of increase were significantly reduced on BYDV-infected transgenic plants compared with BYDV-infected Lambert. In contrast, reproductive period, total adult fecundity, and intrinsic rate of increase on noninfected Lambert were significantly reduced compared with noninfected transgenics. Transgenic plants infected with BYDV were inferior hosts for R. padi compared with infected Lambert. However, noninfected transgenics were superior hosts for aphids than noninfected Lambert. Moderate resistance to BYDV, as indicated by a significantly lower virus titer, was detected in the transgenic genotypes compared with the untransformed ones. Results show for the first time that transgenic virus resistance in wheat can indirectly influence R. padi life history.  相似文献

Some cereal seedlings exhibit antibiotic and antixenotic resistance to the aphids Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), because the seedlings contain hydroxamic acids or gramine. The association between tolerance to aphids and aphid antibiosis was investigated for three cereals, Dollarbird wheat Vulcan wheat and Yagan barley. The dry biomass gained by the aphids and the simultaneous reduction in the biomass of the plants (biomass conversion ratio) quantified tolerance. Biomass production and the density dependence of biomass production by the aphids quantified antibiosis more effectively than fecundity. Vulcan wheat, which has more hydroxamic acid than Dollarbird wheat showed the highest level of antibiosis, and the barley was not antibiotic for either aphid. The biomass conversion ratio was a constant; the biomass of an infested plant was reduced by 3 mg for each mg of aphid biomass gained, regardless of aphid species, plant cultivar, or aphid density. The three plants showed no differential tolerance to the aphids, and therefore tolerance is not associated with antibiosis in this case.  相似文献

Some barley yellow-dwarf (BYD) viruses isolated from cereal crops in Great Britain were transmitted by Rhopalosiphum padi , L. and others were not. Sitobion fragariae (Walker), S. avenae (Fabricius), and Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) all transmitted viruses of both types, but they usually transmitted those of which Rhopalosiphum was a vector less readily than did R. padi. The transmissibility of a virus by a given aphid species was not affected by transmission with another, less efficient, vector species. Neomyzus circumflexus (Buckt.) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) transmitted the few viruses with which they were tested.
A few R. padi acquired virus from infected leaves during 30 min. feeding and inoculated healthy seedlings during 15 min. feeding, but the minimum total time taken to acquire and transmit was 10 hr. and 32 hr. were needed for about half the aphids that were able to acquire and transmit virus to do so. This may indicate the existence of a short latent period of the virus in the vector, although the evidence is not conclusive. The times spent on infected plants influenced the results more than those spent on healthy ones; many transmissions occurred with short feeding times on healthy plants so long as the time spent on infected leaves was long, but the reverse was not true. Nymphs of R. padi that moulted after they left infected plants on which they fed long enough to become infective, infected slightly fewer plants than adults fed for the same times.  相似文献

We compared infestation levels of cereal aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) in spring-seeded wheat and barley grown with and without preplant tillage for 8 site yr in eastern South Dakota. Crop residue covered approximately 25% of the soil surface with preplant tillage, whereas without preplant tillage 50% or more of surface residue was conserved. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) comprised nearly 90% of all cereal aphids sampled, and R. maidis (Fitch), Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and Sitobion avenae (F.) collectively comprised the remainder. R. padi routinely infested lower parts of tillers and were generally concealed by surface residue in plots with no preplant tillage. Across 7 site yr, R. padi were more abundant in plots with no preplant tillage than with preplant tillage (272.6 +/- 54.4 versus 170.1 +/- 37.2 aphid days per 25 tillers). However, in comparisons at individual site years, R. padi were greater in no-preplant tillage plots only once. For all cereal-aphid species combined, infestations were greater in plots with no preplant tillage for 1 of 8 site yr, but did not differ with tillage when compared across all site years. Cereal aphids were never more abundant in plots with preplant tillage. Our results show that conservation tillage leads to greater infestations of R. padi in spring small grains, as increased surface residue provides a favorable microhabitat for this aphid.  相似文献

采用麦穗浸渍法在室内测定了麦长管蚜Macrosiphumavenae(Fabricius)和禾谷缢管蚜Rhopalosiphumpadi(L .)对吡虫啉可湿性粉剂和乳油的敏感度。结果表明 ,禾谷缢管蚜对吡虫啉的敏感度是麦长管蚜的 3~ 4倍 (基于LC50 的比较 )。在北京、河南、江苏、湖北、四川等地同浓度的吡虫啉对禾谷缢管蚜的防治效果要好于麦长管蚜 (特别是在低浓度时尤为明显 )。依据我国不同省份小麦穗蚜的优势种不同 ,建议用吡虫啉防治小麦穗蚜时 ,在南方麦区 ,禾谷缢管蚜为优势种的麦田 ,吡虫啉用药量为 15~ 3 0g(a.i) hm2 ;北方麦区 ,以麦长管蚜为优势种的麦田 ,吡虫啉的用药量应大于 3 0g(a.i) hm2 。  相似文献

Leaf extracts of barley yellow dwarf virus-infected and healthy spring wheat (cv. Highbury) plants at three growth stages were analysed by gas liquid chromatog-raphy to determine their free amino acid content. Eleven free amino acids were identified. Virus infection increased the total amino acid content of sampled leaves at each growth stage but more so at the later stages. Alanine and glutamine were consistently present in greater amounts in infected than in healthy leaves at all three growth stages.  相似文献

Abstract:  Superoxide dismutase and catalase activity was found in the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.). Among the aphid morphs studied, the highest activity of the antioxidant enzymes was noted for winged adults (alatae) and the lowest for wingless (apterae) ones. Higher activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase was observed in the polyphagous species R. padi that alternates between woody host plants and grasses. On some ocassions, activity of superoxide dismutase in cereal aphids was increased by twofold, when aphids were exposed to toxic plant o -dihydroxyphenols. An opposite tendency was observed in case of activity of the catalase that was strongly reduced within body of phenolics-treated insects. Among the plant allelochemicals studied, caffeic acid showed the strongest effect on the activity of the antioxidant enzymes of the cereal aphids. The experiments carried out indicate that antioxidant enzymes might play an important role in interactions between cereal aphids and their host plants.  相似文献

Artificial aphid diets have been previously developed for the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The ability to rear aphids on an artificial diet allows for selectively adding or subtracting compounds from an aphid's food source to determine the effect on fecundity and longevity. Five diets previously developed for the green peach aphid and the pea aphid were tested for their suitability for rearing soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura. The best diet, originally developed for the green peach aphid and based on the amino acid profile of young potato plants, allowed 12 generations of soybean aphids to develop. For all diets tested, aphid fecundity, and longevity were greatly reduced in comparison with aphids reared on soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., plants or on detached soybean leaves. In addition, mean developmental time was significantly longer for aphids reared on artificial diets.  相似文献
