A series of cold fronts passing over the western Arabian Gulf from December 1988 to March 1989 produced the longest period of sustained low water temperatures ever recorded in a coral reef area. Sea water temperatures recorded on two reefs during this period provide new estimates of lower thermal limits for reef coral survival. Severe mortality of the corals Acropora pharaonis and Platygyra daedalea occurred at the northern site where minimum temperatures fell below 11.5°C on four consecutive days and mean daily temperatures were 13°C or less for more than 30 days. However, Porites compressa, the principal reef-former in this area, and various faviid corals initially showed only sub-lethal effects and appeared normal after six months. Corals were not damaged at the southern site, where minimum water temperature fell below 12.5°C for two consecutive days, but mean temperatures were 14°C or less for only 5 non-consecutive days.  相似文献

Blowfly larvae (Diptera: Calliphoridae) fulfil an important ecological function in the decomposition of animal remains. They are also used extensively in forensic entomology, predominantly to establish a minimum time since death, or a minimum post-mortem interval, using the larval length as a 'biological clock'. This study examined the larval growth rate of a forensically important fly species, Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) at temperatures of between 4 degrees C and 30 degrees C, under controlled laboratory conditions. The laboratory flies had been trapped initially in London, U.K. The minimum developmental temperature was estimated to be 1 degrees C and 4700 accumulated degree hours (ADH) were required for development from egg hatch to the point of pupariation. Lines fitted to the laboratory larval growth data were found to adequately explain the growth of larvae in the field. The nature of variation in growth rates from geographically isolated populations is discussed.  相似文献

Potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is an invasive insect pest damaging solanaceous crops. We measured the supercooling point (SCP) and survival at low temperature of different development stages to determine which would be capable of overwintering in the Korean climate and adapting to low temperatures. The SCP ranges from ?23.8°C of the egg to ?16.8 of fourth instar larvae (L4). After short periods of low temperature acclimation in L3 (third instar larva), L4 and prepupae, only the prepupal stage showed a significant lowered SCP from ?20.78 to ?22.37°C. When exposed to different subzero temperature for two hours the egg turned out to be the most cold tolerant stage showing LT50 of ?21.7°C followed by the pupal stage with ?15.89°C. One hundred percent mortality was observed when the larvae or adults were exposed to temperatures below ?15.1°C even for a period as short as 2 h. The results suggest that PTM pupae and egg would be the main overwintering stage in Korea where winter temperature does not drop below ?15°C.  相似文献

Sublingual and oesophageal temperatures were compared at various air temperatures in 16 subjects. In warm air (25-44 degrees C) sublingual temperatures stabilized within plus or minus 0-45 degrees C of oesophageal temperatures, but in air at room temperature (18-24 degrees C) they were sometimes as much as 1-1 degrees C below and in cold air (5-10 degrees C) as much as 4-4 degrees C below oesophageal readings. The sublingual-oesophageal temperature difference in cold air was greatly reduced by keeping the face warm, but it was not reduced in two patients breathing through tracheostomies and thereby eliminating cold air flow from the nose and pharynx. Parotid saliva temperature was low and saliva flow high during exposure, and cold saliva seemed to be mainly responsible for the erratic depression of sublingual temperature in the cold. These results indicate hazards in the casual use of sublingual temperatures, and indicate that external heat may have to be supplied to enable them to give reliable clinical assessments of body temperature.  相似文献

Background

The relationship between temperature and myocardial infarction has not been fully explained. In this study, we identified the threshold temperature and examined the relationship between temperature and emergency admissions due to MI in Korea.

Methods

Poisson generalized additive model analyses were used to assess the short-term effects of temperature (mean, maximum, minimum, diurnal) on MI emergency visits, after controlling for meteorological variable and air pollution (PM10, NO2). We defined the threshold temperature when the inflection point showed a statistically significant difference in the regression coefficients of the generalized additive models (GAMs) analysis. The analysis was performed on the following subgroups: geographical region, gender, age (<75 years or ≥75 years), and MI status (STEMI or non-STEMI).

Results

The threshold temperatures during heat exposure were for the maximum temperature as 25.5–31.5°C and for the mean temperature as 27.5–28.5°C. The threshold temperatures during cold exposure were for the minimum temperature as −2.5–1.5°C. Relative risks (RRs) of emergency visits above hot temperature thresholds ranged from 1.02 to 1.30 and those below cold temperature thresholds ranged from 1.01 to 1.05. We also observed increased RRs ranged from 1.02 to 1.65 of emergency visits when temperatures changes on a single day or on successive days.

Conclusions

We found a relationship between temperature and MI occurrence during both heat and cold exposure at the threshold temperature. Diurnal temperature or temperature change on successive days also increased MI risk.  相似文献

The occurrence of precocious egg development in forensically important calliphorid species has previously been reported; however, the frequency of occurrence in both wild and captive colonies, and the consequent effects on developmental studies and post-mortem interval (PMI) estimates, are largely unknown. A PMI estimate based on samples developed from precocious eggs could be extended by the entire period of embryogenesis, which at 22 °C would result in a significant error of around 24 h. This study examined the occurrence of precocious egg development in Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) wild-caught and captive-bred adults by investigating the presence of larvae in the adult female genital chamber and by monitoring hatching times of entire batches of eggs throughout embryogenesis, respectively. A total of 8.82% of gravid wild-caught females contained a larva in the genital tract (i.e. a precocious egg). This indicates that all specimens collected should be considered potentially precocious for the purpose of PMI estimation. Less than 2.55% of a batch of eggs laid by captive females were precocious; protocols for minimizing the effect of precocious eggs on developmental studies are suggested.  相似文献

The previous investigations show that the amount and activity of Rubisco appears the major limitation to effective C(4) photosynthesis at low temperatures. The chilling-tolerant and bioenergy feedstock species Miscanthus x giganteus (M. x giganteus) is exceptionally productive among C(4) grasses in cold climates. It is able to develop photosynthetically active leaves at temperatures 6 degrees C below the minimum for maize, and achieves a productivity even at 52 degrees N that exceeds that of the most productive C(3) crops at this latitude. This study investigates whether this unusual low temperature tolerance can be attributed to differences in the amount or kinetic properties of Rubisco relative to maize. An efficient protocol was developed to purify large amounts of functional Rubisco from C(4) leaves. The maximum carboxylation activities (V(max)), activation states, catalytic rates per active site (K(cat)) and activation energies (E(a)) of purified Rubisco and Rubisco in crude leaf extracts were determined for M. x giganteus grown at 14 degrees C and 25 degrees C, and maize grown at 25 degrees C. The sequences of M. x giganteus Rubisco small subunit mRNA are highly conserved, and 91% identical to those of maize. Although there were a few differences between the species in the translated protein sequences, there were no significant differences in the catalytic properties (V(max), K(cat), and E(a)) for purified Rubisco, nor was there any effect of growth temperature in M. x giganteus on these kinetic properties. Extracted activities were close to the observed rates of CO(2) assimilation by the leaves in vivo. On a leaf area basis the extracted activities and activation state of Rubisco did not differ significantly, either between the two species or between growth temperatures. The activation state of Rubisco in leaf extracts showed no significant difference between warm and cold-grown M. x giganteus. In total, these results suggest that the ability of M. x giganteus to be productive and maintain photosynthetically competent leaves at low temperature does not result from low temperature acclimation or adaptation of the catalytic properties of Rubisco.  相似文献

Two-day milk production figures for dairymen at Armidale (31° S Lat.) and Goulburn (35° S Lat.), Australia, were compared with minimum daily temperatures. Comparisons were made between production levels on days with temperatures above and below 0°C, and between days with varying intensities of cold: differences in production were minor. The infrequent, more prolonged periods of cold weather (cold being days on which the minimum temperature was below 0°C) were also associated with only very slight reductions in milk output; and the most pronounced decline in production was not attributable to low temperatures. Although short-term fluctuations in output were not related to low temperature events or low temperatures in combination with rain, thermal stress on plant growth during winter contributed to a seasonal downturn in production and below-average annual milk yields in areas with low winter temperatures.  相似文献

Short-term storage of second and third instars of the coccinellid Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timberlake can be achieved efficiently through utilization of temperatures below its thermal threshold of development. Survival, voracity and preimaginal development time were evaluated for larvae kept at 4 and 8°C for up to 5 weeks. Survival was close to 100% for the first two weeks of storage, but decreased drastically afterward and was 0% after 5 weeks. Storage at low temperatures did not diminish the voracity of larvae after storage. Development completely stopped during cold storage but resumed without significant effect after larvae were returned to 24°C. This study indicates for the first time that cold storage of C. maculata second and third instars is possible for a period of up to 2 weeks and provides a technique that could benefit biological control programs by increasing availability of beneficial insects.  相似文献

The tropical root weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.), has been a pest of citrus and ornamental plants since its introduction into Lake County, FL, in 1964. Since then, it has colonized the Florida peninsula to the south of its point of introduction but has not expanded its range to the north. A lower threshold for oviposition by D. abbreviatus was estimated as 14.9 degrees C. Eggs were highly susceptible to cold, with 95% mortality (LTime95) occurring in 4.2 d at 12 degrees C. Relative susceptibility of life stages to cold was eggs > pupae > larvae > adults. Archived weather data from Florida were examined to guide a mapping exercise using the lower developmental threshold for larvae (12 degrees C) and the lower threshold for oviposition (15 degrees C) as critical temperatures for mapping the distribution of D. abbreviatus and the potential for establishment of egg parasitoids. Probability maps using the last 10 yr of weather data examined the frequency of at least 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 d per winter when soil temperature was 相似文献

The development period from birth to adult of virginoparae of the turnip aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach), at 14 constant, 15 alternating and 15 natural temperature regimes were modelled to determine mathematical functions for simulating aphid development under a wide range of natural conditions. The day-degree model, the logistic equation, and the Wang model were used to describe the relationships between temperature and development rate at constant and alternating temperatures. The three models were then used with a Weibull function describing the distribution of development times, to simulate the development of individuals of cohorts at natural temperature regimes. Comparison of the observed with simulated distributions of adult emergence indicates that all three models can simulate the development of L. erysimi equally well when temperature does not go below 6 degrees C (the notional low temperature threshold of the day-degree model) or above 30 degrees C. When accumulation of temperatures below 6 degrees C becomes substantial, only the logistic curve offers accurate simulations; the other two models give falsely longer durations of development. When accumulation of temperatures above 30 degrees C becomes substantial, the logistic curve and the Wang model offer more accurate simulations than the day-degree model, which tends to produce shorter durations of development. Further analysis of the data reveals that development rate of this aphid at a given unfavourable high temperature may vary with time. Methods for accurately simulating the development time of L. erysimi in the field are suggested. The significance of modelling insect development at low and high temperatures by non-linear models is discussed.  相似文献

The developmental rate under low temperatures and cold tolerance were investigated in embryos of the blowfly Lucilia sericata. The larvae of this species are now widely used in maggot debridement therapy. Embryonic development was dependent on temperature, with a lower developmental threshold of 9.0 °C. The duration of the egg stage at a rearing temperature of 25 °C was 14 h, and a low temperature of 12.5 °C successfully prolonged this period to 66 h. Embryonic stages differed markedly in their cold tolerance; young embryos were less tolerant to cold than old ones. Late embryonic stages are suitable for cold storage at 5 °C and the storage for 72 h did not decrease the hatching rate by more than 50%. In the mass‐rearing process required for maggot debridement therapy, either of these two simple protocols would be beneficial.  相似文献

Irreversible damage caused by cold shock has been assumed to occur when boar semen is exposed to temperatures below 15 degrees C. Identification of the lower critical temperature at which extended boar semen undergoes cold shock, however, has yet to be defined. The aims of this study were to 1) identify the cold-shock critical temperature and time on extended boar semen as assessed by sperm motility and morphology, and 2) determine the effects on fertility of using extended porcine semen exposed to this critical temperature and time. For Objective 1, ejaculates from 18 boars were collected, analyzed and extended in Androhep to 50 x 10(6) sperm/mL. Doses (4 x 10(9) sperm) from each ejaculate were exposed to 5 storage temperatures (8, 10, 12, 14 and 17 degrees C). Sperm motility and morphology (including acrosomes) were assessed following collection and at 12-h intervals for 48-h. Decreases in sperm motility occurred within the first 12-h at all temperatures. Sample motility dropped below 70% within 12-h in the 8 degrees C group and by 48-h in the 10 degrees C group. Sample motility was > 75% in the 12, 14 and 17 degrees C (control) groups throughout the trial. The percentage of morphologically abnormal sperm cells, including acrosomes, did not change within or between treatment groups over the 48-h storage period. In Objective 2, boar ejaculates (n = 9) were handled as in the first objective and were equally divided into treated (12 degrees C for < or = 60-h) and control (17 degrees C for < or = 60-h) groups. Using a timed, double insemination technique, 135 sows were bred by AI using either 12 degrees C (n = 74) or 17 degrees C (n = 61) extended, stored semen. No differences were observed in the farrowing rate (93 vs 95%), total offspring born (11.58 vs 11.61) or number live born (10.68 vs 10.63) between 12 and 17 degrees C groups, respectively. The results demonstrate that acceptable fertility can be obtained with Androhep extended boar semen exposed to temperatures as low as 12 degrees C for up to 60-h, and that cold shock appears to occur in vitro when extended boar semen is exposed to storage temperatures below 12 degrees C.  相似文献

Growth at low positive temperatures and induced phenotypic resistance to extreme cold temperature (freezing/thawing cycles) of Enterococcus faecalis were investigated. The effect of low temperatures on the specific growth rates was studied; use of Arrhenius profile and Ratkovsky 'square-root' model allowed determination of the 'temperature characteristic' (μ≅ 13 800 cal mol-1), the critical temperature (Tcrit≅ 17.9C) and the notional minimum growth temperature (To≅ 3.6C). Preincubation of Ent. faecalis cells at low temperatures (8–16C) during periods corresponding to their generation time resulted in an increased ability of the bacterial cells to withstand short periods of freezing/thawing (-20C/+37C) challenge. Moreover, the increase of the incubation period at low positive temperature led to a higher degree of adaptation.  相似文献

Two large-scale surveys of body temperatures in elderly people living at home were carried out in the winter of 1972. Most of the homes visited were cold with room temperatures below the minimum recommended by the Department of Health. Deep body temperatures below 35·5°C were found in 10% of those studied, and the difference between the skin temperature and the core temperature was also reduced in this group. Such individuals are at risk of developing hypothermia since they show evidence of some degree of thermoregulatory failure. Further research is needed, but meanwhile there are practical measures that could be taken to reduce the risk of hypothermia in the elderly.  相似文献

Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner), is classified as a freeze-intolerant organism and one of the most cold-tolerant stored-product pests. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between mortality at low temperatures after minimum exposure and the supercooling point (SCP) for laboratory-reared P. interpunctella at different stages of development. This relationship also was analyzed for field-collected, cold-acclimated fifth instars. Mean SCP of laboratory-reared larvae (i.e., feeding stage) was consistently above approximately -16 degrees C. Mean SCP of laboratory-reared pupae and adults (i.e., nonfeeding stages) and field-collected, cold-acclimated fifth instars was consistently below approximately -21 degrees CP seemed to be the boundary between survival and death for larvae. However, it seemed that a 1-min exposure was not sufficient to cause larval mortality at the SCP. Alternatively, for both pupae and adults, the SCP seemed not to play an important role in their survival at low temperatures, with significant mortality observed at temperatures higher than the mean SCP. Adults were the most susceptible to low temperatures with no survival occurring at -20 degrees C, > 3 degrees C above its mean SCP. Results of this investigation demonstrate that P. interpunctella has a different response to low temperatures depending on stage of development and cold acclimation. Classifying P. interpunctella only as a freeze-intolerant organism disregards the occurrence of prefreeze mortality in this species. Therefore, a reclassification of this species (e.g., chill tolerant or chill susceptible) based on the extent of prefreeze mortality and the temperature and time of exposure at which it occurs is suggested.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. Overwintering survivorship of pupae of the mimosa webworm, Homadaula anisocentra Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), was examined in several urban habitats in central Iowa during the winters of 1981–82, 1982–83 and 1983–84.
2. Survivorship and supercooling point temperatures were determined throughout the winters. Corroborative laboratory studies were conducted during the winter of 1982–83.
3. Minimum ambient temperatures that equalled or were below the supercooling point of the insect, at any time, were lethal.
4. Prolonged cold exposure below 0°C and above the supercooling point resulted in high mortality levels. To quantify this relationship, a concept of minimum-temperature exposure was developed by tabulating the number of degrees that the daily minimum temperature was below 0°C for a given sampling period.
5. Some mimosa webworm pupae were found to overwinter in highly protected sites (2.5–5.0°C warmer than the ambient air temperatures) in the urban environment, resulting in less minimum-temperature exposure and reducing the probability of reaching the lethal supercooling point temperature.  相似文献

Activities of prevalent protein phosphatases decreased by nearly 95% and those of individual protein kinases were differentially reduced at low temperature. Inhibition of phosphatase activity at temperatures below 12°C resulted in marked hyperphosphorylation of a 58-kDa protein (PP58). The temperature threshold for hyperphosphorylation of PP58 coincided with the known threshold for cold-induced calcium influx. Since calcium influx is triggered by several environmental stresses, we propose that the observed direct effects of cold on the phosphorylation of specific proteins enable cells to couple a shared calcium signal to a cold-specific transduction pathway.  相似文献

Bioconversion of 16-dehydropregnenolone acetate (16-DPA) to androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione (ADD), an intermediate for the production of female sex hormones, by mixed culture of Pseudomonas diminuta MTCC 3361 and Comamonas acidovorans MTCC 3362 is reported. Various physicochemical parameters for the bioconversion of 16-DPA to ADD have been optimized in shake flask cultures. Nutrient broth inoculated with actively growing co-culture proved ideal for bacterial growth and bioconversion. A temperature range of 35-40 degrees C was most suitable; higher or lower temperatures adversely affected the bioconversion. Dimethylformamide below 2% concentration was the most suitable carrier solvent. Maximum conversion was recorded at 0.5 mg mL(-1) 16-DPA. A pH of 5.0 yielded a peak conversion of 62 mol % in 120 h incubation period. Addition of 9alpha-hydroxylase inhibitors failed to prevent further breakdown of ADD to nonsteroidal products. 16-DPA conversion in a 5 L fermenter followed a similar trend.  相似文献
