Recent evidence on directional asymmetry (DA) in species of the paraphyletic assemblage “Lacertilia” indicates a possible biological significance of this phenomenon, and we tested its occurrence in Serpentes by examining bilateral morphological characters, such as the numbers of supralabial and infralabial scutes and the diameter of the eyes, on both sides of museum specimens of seven species: Coronella austriaca, Elaphe longissima, Hierophis viridiflavus, Natrix natrix, Natrix tessellata, Platyceps saharicus, and Vipera aspis. Significant DA (not antisymmetry) occurred in at least one sex of four species and in two characters: H. viridiflavus—the number of infralabial scutes in males; N. tessellata—the diameter of the eyes in males; P. saharicus—the number of infralabial scutes in males and the diameter of the eyes in females; and V. aspis—the number of infralabial scutes in the pooled sexes. In N. tessellata and P. saharicus the DA varied geographically. Rank correlation between the DA of different characters, positive or negative, was significant in one character pair in each of three species. In the largest sample (N. tessellata males from the Levant), tail injury correlated with morphological left-dominant asymmetry (a greater number on the left) of infralabial scutes. Four of ten morphologically left-dominant males, but only 1 of 37 symmetrical or right-dominant males, had an injured tail. The syndrome of morphological DA with functional handicap may be genotypical or phenotypical. Our results support three earlier conclusions: bilateral characters should be examined on both sides of an animal; asymmetry should be analyzed separately in each sex; and the accident proneness of left-handed Homo sapiens merits re-evaluation in view of the apparently wide-spread accident proneness in left-biased Sauropsida (exclusive of Aves).  相似文献

A classic example of a sexually selected trait, the deep fork tail of the barn swallow Hirundo rustica is now claimed to have evolved and be maintained mainly via aerodynamic advantage rather than sexually selected advantage. However, this aerodynamic advantage hypothesis does not clarify which flight habits select for/against deep fork tails, causing diversity of tail fork depth in hirundines. Here, by focusing on the genus Hirundo, we investigated whether the large variation in tail fork depth could be explained by the differential flight habits. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, we found that migrant species had deeper fork tails, but less colorful plumage, than the other species, indicating that migration favors a specific trait, deep fork tails. At the same time, tail fork depth but not plumage coloration decreased with increasing bill size – a proxy of prey size, suggesting that foraging on larger prey items favors shallower fork tails. Variation of tail fork depth in the genus Hirundo may be explained by differential flight habits, even without assuming sexual selection.  相似文献

The shape of the nucleus of blood heterophils was examined in 67 reptilian species. Two distinct forms of nucleus were found, either unlobed or lobed. In all species of Chelonia, Crocodylia and Serpentes examined the heterophil nucleus was unlobed whereas, in the Lacertilia, unlobed nuclei were found in the anguinomorph families Anguidae, Helodermatidae and Varanidae but lobed nuclei occurred in the heterophils of the scincomorph families Scincidae, Cordylida, Teiidae and Lacertidae and in the more primitive lacertilian families Iguanidae, Agamidae, Gekkonidae and Chamaeleonidae. These differences have been related to possible phylogenetic, morphological and haematological factors.  相似文献

Understanding why males of many species exhibit two or more sexual ornaments depends upon identifying both the information conveyed and the intended receiver(s) for each signal. Here we focus on identifying the intended receivers for two sexual signals exhibited by male red-backed fairy-wrens Malurus melanocephalus , extent of nuptial plumage and tail length. In doing so we test the multiple receiver hypothesis, which predicts that each trait is directed toward a different type of receiver (e.g., males vs females). Male red-backed fairy-wrens in nuptial plumage exhibit reversed sexual dimorphism for tail length in the breeding season, when their tails are significantly shorter than those of females or males in eclipse plumage. Using both aviary-based experiments and indices of mate choice and social dominance from a natural population, we found that extent of nuptial plumage and age primarily affected female mate choice and that shorter tails were primarily associated with male:male dominance signaling. The field and aviary studies combined are consistent with the multiple receiver hypothesis, in that each trait appears to be directed primarily to a different set of receivers (plumage for females and tail length for males), though each trait may also signal information to the other set of receivers as well. We propose that sexual selection may favor shorter tail lengths in male red-backed fairy-wrens through social competition mechanisms.  相似文献

鸣禽鸟的基本发声中枢——丘间复合体背内侧核(nucleus dorsalis medialis of the intercollicular complex,DM)对叫声的调控模式是诱发单次叫声。应用电生理与声学分析相结合的方法研究鸣禽鸟燕雀(Fringilla montifringilla)DM核团对声音调控的模式。经语图和频谱图分析,结果显示:燕雀左侧DM诱发单次叫声的声长和主能量区的带宽分别为右侧DM诱发叫声的2倍和1.7~3.1倍,提示燕雀DM对叫声声长和声强的调控能力,均呈明显的左侧优势。这与高级发声中枢(high vocal center,HVC)和古纹状体粗核(nucleus robustus archistriatalis,RA)等发声控制核团在控声模式中具有左侧优势的特征相似,从而为鸣禽发声控制通路高、低级中枢具有内源投射关系提供了声学上的证据。  相似文献

Handedness has been shown to be related to a number of systematic asymmetries in body dimensions, dermatoglyphic patterns and cerebral morphology. The aim here was to compare linear and angular tooth crown asymmetries of the permanent molars in healthy right-handed and left-handed subjects. The material comprised 27 children with recorded concordant left-side dominance of hand, eye and foot. The controls were an age- and sex-matched group with right side dominance. The material is based on the Collaborative Perinatal Project where detailed medical records and the dentitions, including accurate dental impressions, of over two thousand American children were examined in the USA in the sixties. Machine vision technique was used to obtain accurate three-dimensional information from the occlusal surfaces of the first permanent upper and lower molars. The directional asymmetry values of angular measurements of mandibular first molars showed evidence of asymmetry of opposite direction between the two examined groups. The results indicate that occlusal morphology of first permanent molars may be affected by handedness, and this tendency is most evident in the angular measurements of the mandibular molars. Fluctuating asymmetry did not differ significantly between the examined groups.  相似文献

Adult male zebra finches underwent unilateral denervation of the syrinx or unilateral lesion of the forebrain nucleus HVC known to be important for song control. Disruptive effects on song were greater after right-side than after left-side operations. After denervation of the right half of the syrinx, the fundamental frequencies of all syllables within a song converged on a value near 500 Hz, and nearly all syllables were altered in type. In contrast, the syllables produced after denervation of the left side of the syrinx largely maintained their preoperative frequencies, and fewer syllables changed in type. Unlike nerve sections, HVC lesions did not result in strikingly lateralized effects on syllable phonology; however, HVC lesions did affect the temporal patterning of a bird's song, whereas nerve sections did not, and changes in temporal patterning were more marked after right than after left HVC lesions. Right-side dominance for zebra finch song control is the reverse of that described in other songbird species with lateral asymmetry for vocal communication. We suggest that the need for a dominant side is more important than the side of dominance.  相似文献

Recent work on birds suggests that certain morphological differences between the sexes may have evolved as an indirect consequence of sexual selection because they offset the cost of bearing extravagant ornaments used for fighting or mate attraction. For example, long-tailed male sunbirds and widowbirds also have longer wings than females, perhaps to compensate for the aerodynamic costs of tail elaboration. We used comparative data from 57 species to investigate whether this link between sexual dimorphism in wing and tail length is widespread among long-tailed birds. We found that within long-tailed families, variation in the extent of tail dimorphism was associated with corresponding variation in wing dimorphism. One nonfunctional explanation of this result is simply that the growth of wings and tails is controlled by a common developmental mechanism, such that long-tailed individuals inevitably grow long wings as well. However, this hypothesis cannot account for a second pattern in our data set: as predicted by aerodynamic theory, we found that, comparing across long-tailed families, sexual dimorphism in wing length varied with tail shape as well as with sex differences in tail length. Thus, wing dimorphism was generally greater in species with aerodynamically costly graduated tails than in birds with cheaper, streamer-shaped tails. This result was not caused by confounding phylogenetic effects, because it persisted when phylogeny was controlled for, using an independent comparisons method. Our findings therefore confirm that certain aspects of sexual dimorphism may sometimes have evolved through selection for traits that reduce the costs of elaborate sexually selected characters. We suggest that future work aimed at understanding sexual selection by investigating patterns of sexual dimorphism should attempt to differentiate between the direct and indirect consequences of sexual selection.  相似文献

Dominant and subordinate individuals in a group may benefit from the stability of the social dominance organisation, avoiding excessive waste of time and energy in aggressive interactions and reducing injury risks. Nevertheless, the likely evolutionary incentive for individuals to become, and furthermore to stay, dominant may destabilise such dominance hierarchies. In this context, the relative importance of fixed (e.g. sex, morphological size) and fluctuating (e.g. body condition, mating status, reproductive success, social unit size) traits influencing the establishment and preservation of dominance relationships could play a key role in group structure. We investigated the relative role of fixed and fluctuating traits on social status in Dark-bellied Brent Geese Branta bernicla bernicla which form large fairly unstable groups both within and across winters. We compared individual dominance scores of ringed Brent Geese during four consecutive winters. Brent Geese conserved their dominance score within a given winter irrespective of their age but were generally unable to conserve it across consecutive winters. As winter dominance scores correlated best with social unit size, dominance status thus appeared to be mostly a by-product of a fluctuating trait: breeding success in the previous summer. When we considered only adults that had the same social unit size during two consecutive winters, we observed a significant preservation of dominance scores. This result suggests that a fixed trait such as sex or morphological size may still play a role in setting dominance status.  相似文献

To test whether quantitative traits are under directional or homogenizing selection, it is common practice to compare population differentiation estimates at molecular markers (F(ST)) and quantitative traits (Q(ST)). If the trait is neutral and its determinism is additive, then theory predicts that Q(ST) = F(ST), while Q(ST) > F(ST) is predicted under directional selection for different local optima, and Q(ST) < F(ST) is predicted under homogenizing selection. However, nonadditive effects can alter these predictions. Here, we investigate the influence of dominance on the relation between Q(ST) and F(ST) for neutral traits. Using analytical results and computer simulations, we show that dominance generally deflates Q(ST) relative to F(ST). Under inbreeding, the effect of dominance vanishes, and we show that for selfing species, a better estimate of Q(ST) is obtained from selfed families than from half-sib families. We also compare several sampling designs and find that it is always best to sample many populations (>20) with few families (five) rather than few populations with many families. Provided that estimates of Q(ST) are derived from individuals originating from many populations, we conclude that the pattern Q(ST) > F(ST), and hence the inference of directional selection for different local optima, is robust to the effect of nonadditive gene actions.  相似文献

Congenital morphological differences between injured and intact individuals in a population may reflect adaptations to avoid injury, to survive injury, or both. We explore the possible occurrence of such adaptations, analysing the relationship between tail state (original, O; regenerated, R) and morphology (20 scale characters) in 23 taxa of Lacertidae. In some taxa, such as Acanthodactylus opheodurus , morphologies of O and R lizards differed significantly. In these, usually O individuals were morphologically typical (modal), while R individuals were extreme; in others, the contrary occurred. Indices of pattern similarity detected fewer differences between O and R lizards than those based on absolute values. We developed unbiased estimates of classification rates of discriminant analysis. The order of inclusion of characters in the discriminant functions of males and females of the same species differed more than the order for the same sex in other species. Some morphological differences between O and R lizards seem adaptive or linked by pleiotropy to adaptive traits. Congenital morphological differences between O and R lizards are probably more frequent than detected because we show that age and geographical heterogeneity of our samples are confounding factors to O–R differences. A previous experimental study of great snipe, Gallinago media, has reported an effect on male mating success of the amount of white in their tails. That result is one of a very limited set of existing experimental results supporting a female mate preference for a morphological trait in animals. However, a later observational study did not find any correlation between amount of white and male mating success. If females sample a limited number of males, their preferences need not result in strong relationships between mating success and trait values in males, possibly explaining the failure to find the predicted correlation. Yet, females of lekking species are thought to have ample opportunities for mate sampling. To resolve these contrasting results, we present in this paper (1) a larger correlational study (several leks during 10 years) showing no relationship between male mating success and whiteness of tails (measured in several ways), and most importantly (2) evidence that individual females do not mate predominantly with males with very white tails among those males that each female samples. These results show that females do not prefer males with whiter tails as mates, within the contemporary natural variation in the trait. They also show that there is no sexual selection of the trait at present. This does not necessarily imply that white tails are not a sexually selected adaptation in males, but the mechanisms are likely to have been different from direct mate choice of whiter tails per se. High vocal center (HVC) can produce single sound with one or two syllables by the single-type vocal control pattern in songbirds ruddy bunting (Emberiza rutila). It obviously shows left-side dominance in controlling double syllables, principal frequency (PF) and increasing sound intensity of the evoked calls. Meanwhile, the complex-type control pattern can produce complex calls with multisyllable, and also shows significant left-side dominance in controlling the number of syllables, tone changing and sound intensity. These indicate that left-side HVC controls higher frequency and complicated sentence structure. The basic vocal center, dorsomedial nucleus of the intercollicular complex (DM), controls the monosyllable sound in songbirds, and shows left-side dominance in controlling both the number of syllable and sound intensity. These results not only provide some direct evidence for left-side dominance in high vocal center, but also indicate that there is some internal connection between the high and basic vocal centers in songbirds.  相似文献

Dominance hierarchies play an important role in avoidance and/or solving conflicts in gregarious species. In dabbling ducks (Anas species), dominance allows for feeding‐site monopolization in winter quarters where resources are generally limited. In addition, male social rank should theoretically favour access to mates. Dominance rank can be associated with morphological traits, and is often correlated with aggressiveness, a behavioural trait generally related to high testosterone levels. In this study, we investigated the existence of a winter group structure based on dominance relationships and tested for a linear hierarchy, in three species of captive male dabbling ducks (mallard Anas platyrhynchos, pintail A. acuta and wigeon A. penelope). We then analysed the relationship between dominance ranks, morphological parameters and testosterone levels measured in early (Oct.) and mid‐winter (Dec./Jan.). We found that the three male groups of the three species exhibited a linear hierarchy. Testosterone levels differed during winter and between species. Morphologic measurements, body mass and body condition were not correlated with individual dominance ranks, whereas dominant males had higher testosterone levels than subordinates. The slopes of the relationships were similar between species and winter period, but the y‐intercepts differed between species and between early and mid‐winter phases. The linear hierarchy found in the three species indicates that dominance relationships strongly structure dabbling duck groups in winter. Lack of correlation between rank and morphological characters, but correlation of rank with testosterone levels suggests that social rank is more dependent on behavioural traits such as aggressive behaviour. The differences between species and winter periods are discussed in relation to migration and wintering phenology.  相似文献

Biodiversity and ecosystem function are often correlated, but there are multiple hypotheses about the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Ecosystem functions such as primary or secondary production may be maximized by species richness, evenness in species abundances, or the presence or dominance of species with certain traits. Here, we combine surveys of natural fish communities (conducted in July and August 2016) with morphological trait data to examine relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function (quantified as fish community biomass) across 14 subtidal eelgrass meadows in the Northeast Pacific (54°N, 130°W). We employ both taxonomic and functional trait measures of diversity to investigate whether ecosystem function is best predicted by species diversity (complementarity hypothesis) or by the presence or dominance of species with particular trait values (selection or dominance hypotheses). After controlling for environmental variation, we find that fish community biomass is maximized when taxonomic richness and functional evenness are low, and in communities dominated by species with particular trait values, specifically those associated with benthic habitats and prey capture. While previous work on fish communities has found that species richness is often positively correlated with ecosystem function, our results instead highlight the capacity for regionally prevalent and locally dominant species to drive ecosystem function in moderately diverse communities. We discuss these alternate links between community composition and ecosystem function and consider their divergent implications for ecosystem valuation and conservation prioritization.  相似文献

Many studies have focused on tail ornamentation in birds, but not all tail shapes have been studied in depth. Graduated and pin tails have received less attention than forked tails, despite being more likely, in terms of aerodynamic theory, to be honest signals. We report morphological variation in live specimens of two sexually dimorphic passerines from the same site with different tail shapes: graduated (Cape sugarbird Promerops cafer ) and pin (orange-breasted sunbird Antobaphes violacea ). Coefficients of variation (CVs) were calculated for all morphological traits, both non-ornamental (range 1.91–5.72) and ornamental (range 5.83–21.71). Males and females did not differ in CV for any non-ornamental trait. Ornamental traits in males of both species were significantly more variable than all non-ornamental traits. Cape sugarbird ornamental traits were significantly more variable than those of orange-breasted sunbirds. The high levels of variation in graduated tails relative to pintails suggest that these traits have been driven mainly by sexual selection.
