Net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance to CO2 andresidual conductance to CO2 were measured in the last six leaves(the sixth or flag leaf and the preceding five leaves) of Triticumaestivum L. cv. Kolibri plants grown in Mediterranean conditions.Recently fully expanded leaves of well-watered plants were alwaysused. Measurements were made at saturating photosynthetic photonflux density, and at ambient CO2 and O2 levels. The specificleaf area, total organic nitrogen content, some anatomical characteristics, and other parameters, were measured on the same leaves usedfor gas exchange experiments. A progressive xeromorphic adaptation in the leaf structure wasobserved with increasing leaf insertion levels. Furthermore, mesophyll cell volume per unit leaf area (Vmes/A) decreasedby 52·6% from the first leaf to the flag leaf. Mesophyllcell area per unit leaf area also decreased, but only by 24·5%.However, nitrogen content per unit mesophyll cell volume increasedby 50·6% from the first leaf to the flag leaf. This increasecould be associated to an observed higher number of chloroplastcross-sections per mm2 of mesophyll cell cross-sectional areain the flag leaf: values of 23000 in the first leaf and 48000in the flag leaf were obtained. Pn per unit leaf area remainedfairly constant at the different insertion levels: values of33·83±0·93 mg dm–2 h–1 and32·32±1·61 mg dm–2 h–1 wereobtained for the first leaf and the flag leaf, respectively.Residual conductance, however, decreased by 18·2% fromthe first leaf to the flag leaf. Stomatal conductance increasedby 41·7%. The steadiness in Pn per unit leaf area across the leaf insertionlevels could be mainly accounted for by an opposing effect betweena decrease in Vmes/A and a more closely packed arrangement ofphotosynthetic apparatus. Adaptative significance of structuralchanges with increasing leaf insertion levels and the steadinessin Pn per unit leaf area was studied. Key words: Photosynthesis, structure, wheat  相似文献

Plants of the biennial Arctium tomentosum were grown from seedto seed-set in an open field under three different treatments:control plants receiving full light intensity, plants with aleaf area reduced by 45 per cent, and shaded plants receivingonly 20 per cent of natural illumination. At various stagesof development the youngest fully expanded leaf of one plantin each treatment was exposed to 14CO2 for half an hour. Subsequentdistribution of labelled assimilates in various plant partswas determined after eight hours. In the first year, the mostdominant sink was the tap root irrespective of variation inassimilate supply. During the production of new vegetative growthin the second season, a larger amount of radioactive photosynthatewas recovered from above ground parts, especially during formationof lateral branches. Seed filling consumed 80–90 per centof labelled carbon exported from the exposed leaf. In the secondyear, the most pronounced difference between treatments wasin the degree of apical dominance, being highest in shaded plantsand lowest in the plants with cut leaves. Results from 14C experimentsagreed fairly well with a ‘partitioning coefficient’derived from a growth analysis of plants grown independentlyunder the same experimental conditions. Reasons for discrepanciesbetween the 14C results and the partitioning coefficient arediscussed. To better understand source-sink interactions, this work focusedon the influence of fruit number on leaf area and photosyntheticactivity in cantaloupe. To this end, flowers were removed over2 years on two Charentais cultivars to obtain single-fruit plantsand plants with an unrestricted fruit load (which set two tofive fruits and constituted control plants). At the whole plantscale, net photosynthesis was reduced by about 30% under highfruit load. At the leaf scale, a submodel of stomatal conductancewas fitted to the data and was included in a rectangular hyperbolamodel of leaf photosynthesis. Maximum leaf net photosynthesisaveraged 14.83 µmol CO2m-2s-1at 1000 µmol quantam-2s-1. Light use efficiency was not affected by fruit loadand equalled 0.040 mol CO2mol-1quanta. Leaf area of plants withunrestricted fruit load decreased after 24 days from pollination, while the leaf area of single-fruit plants was still increasing. The decrease was due to production of fewer new leaves per day, whereas the number of senescent leaves and the size of individualleaves were not affected by the treatment. Under high fruitload, cultivar Galoubet developed a larger projected leaf areathan cultivar Talma. Thus it is concluded that: (1) large cantaloupefruits may divert a large amount of assimilates away from, andgrow at the expense of, the canopy; and (2) photosynthesis ofthe canopy was lowered because leaf area was reduced whereasphotosynthetic rate of leaves was not altered.Copyright 1998Annals of Botany Company. Microswards of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grownin controlled environments at 10/7, 18/13 and 26/21 °C day/nighttemperatures. The vertical distribution of leaves of differentages and their rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ were studied. Extending petioles carried the laminae of young leaves throughthe existing foliage. A final position was reached within 1/4to 1/3 of the time between unfolding and death. Newly unfoldedleaves had higher rates of 14CO2-uptake per leaf area than olderones at the same height in the canopy. At higher temperatures, the decrease with age was faster. However, the light-photosynthesisresponse of leaves which were removed from different heightsin the canopy varied much less with leaf age than did the ratesof 14CO2-uptake in situ. The comparison of the rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ with thelight-photosynthesis response curves suggests that young leavesreceive more light than older ones at the same height in thecanopy. This would imply that young white clover leaves havethe ability to reach canopy positions having a favourable lightenvironment. This ability may improve the chances of survivalof white clover in competition with other species. The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on theecophysiological responses (gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence,Rubisco activity, leaf area development) as well as on the growthand biomass production of two poplar clones (i.e. Populus trichocarpax P. deltoides clone Beaupré and P. x euramericana cloneRobusta) were examined under open top chamber conditions. Theelevated CO2 treatment (ambient + 350 µmol mol-1) stimulatedabove-ground biomass of clones Robusta and Beaupré afterthe first growing season by 55 and 38%, respectively. This increasedbiomass production under elevated CO2 was associated with asignificant increase in plant height, the latter being the resultof enhanced internode elongation rather than an increased productionof leaves or internodes. Both an increased leaf area index (LAI)and a stimulated net photosynthesis per unit leaf contributedto a significantly higher stem biomass per unit leaf area, andthus to the increased above-ground biomass production underthe elevated CO2 concentrations in both clones. The larger LAIwas caused by a larger individual leaf size and leaf growthrate; the number of leaves was not altered by the elevated CO2treatment. The higher net leaf photosynthesis was the resultof an increase in the photochemical (maximal chlorophyll fluorescenceFm and photochemical efficiency Fv/Fm) as well as in the biochemical(increased Rubisco activity) process capacities. No significantdifferences were found in dark respiration rate, neither betweenclones nor between treatments, but specific leaf area significantlydecreased under elevated CO2 conditions.Copyright 1995, 1999Academic Press Biomass, chlorophyll a fluorescence, elevated CO2, growth, Populus, poplar, photosynthesis, respiration, Rubisco  相似文献

Single, seed-grown plants of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv.Melle) were grown for 49 d from the early seedling stage ingrowth cabinets at a day/night temperature of 20/15 C, witha 12 h photoperiod, and a CO2 concentration of either 340 or680µI 1–1 CO2. Following complete acclimation tothe environmental regimes, leaf and whole plant CO2 effluxesand influxes were measured using infra-red gas analysis techniques.Elevated CO2 increased rates of photosynthesis of young, fullyexpanded leaves by 35–46% and of whole plants by morethan 50%. For both leaves and whole plants acclimation to 680µI–1 CO2 reduced rates of photosynthesis in bothCO2 regimes, compared with plants acclimated to 340µll–1. There was no significant effect of CO2 regime onrespiration rates of either leaves or whole plants, althoughleaves developed in elevated CO2 exhibited generally lower ratesthan those developed in 340µI I–1 CO2. Initially the seedling plants in elevated CO2 grew faster thantheir counterparts in 340µI I–1 CO2, but this effectquickly petered out and final plant weights differed by onlyc. 10%. Since the total area of expanded and unexpanded laminaewas unaffected by CO2 regime, specific leaf area was persistently13–40% lower in elevated CO2 while, similarly, root/shootratio was also reduced throughout the experiment. Elevated CO2reduced tissue nitrogen contents of expanded leaves, but hadno effect on the nitrogen contents of unexpanded leaves, sheathsor roots. The lack of a pronounced effect of elevated CO2 on plant growthwas primarily due to the fact that CO2 concentration did notinfluence tiller (branch) numbers. In the absence of an effecton tiller numbers, any possible weight increment was restrictedto the c. 2.5 leaves of each tiller. The reason for the lackof an effect on tillering is not known. To examine the effects of a doubled atmospheric CO2 concentrationand other aspects of global climate change on a common CAM speciesnative to the Sonoran Desert, Agave deserti was grown under370 and 750 µmol CO2 mol–1 air and gas exchangewas measured under various environmental conditions. Doublingthe CO2 concentration increased daily net CO2 uptake by 49%throughout the 17 months and decreased daily transpiration by24%, leading to a 110% increase in water-use efficiency. Underthe doubled CO2 concentration, the activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) was 11% lower, phosphoenolpyruvatecarboxylase was 34% lower, and the activated:total ratio forRubisco was 25% greater than under the current CO2 concentration.Less leaf epicuticular wax occurred on plants under the doubledCO2 concentration, which decreased the reflectance of photosyntheticphoton flux (PPF); the chlorophyll content per unit leaf areawas also less. The enhancement of daily net CO2 uptake by doublingthe CO2 concentration increased when the PPF was decreased below25 mol m–2 d–1 when water was withheld, and whenday/night temperatures were below 17/12 C. More leaves, eachwith a greater surface area, were produced per plant under thedoubled CO2 concentration. The combination of increased totalleaf surface area and increased daily net CO2 uptake led toan 88% stimulation of dry mass accumulation under the doubledCO2 concentration. A rising atmospheric CO2 concentration, togetherwith accompanying changes in temperature, precipitation, andPPF, should increase growth and productivity of native populationsof A. deserti. Leaves from in vitro and greenhouse cultured plants of Malusdomestica (Borkh.) cv. Mark were subjected to 4 h of darkness;4 h of 1 M mannitol induced water stress; 1 h of 10–4M to 10–7 M cis-trans abscisic acid (ABA) treatment; 1h of 0.12% atmospheric CO2. Stomatal closure was determinedby microscopic examination of leaf imprints. In all treatments, less than 5% of the stomata from leaves of in vitro culturedplants were closed. The diameter of open stomata on leaves fromin vitro culture remained at 8 µm. In contrast, an averageof 96% of the stomata on leaves of greenhouse grown plants wereclosed after 4 h in darkness; 56% after 4 h of mannitol inducedwater stress; 90% after 1 h of 10–4 M ABA treatment; 61%after 1 h in an atmosphere of 0.12% CO2. Stomata of in vitroapple leaves did not seem to have a closure mechanism, but acquiredone during acclimatization to the greenhouse environment. Thelack of stomatal closure in in vitro plants was the main causeof rapid water loss during transfer to low relative humidity.  相似文献

In order to study the effects of inorganic phosphate (P1) starvationon C4plants, 3-week-old maize plants (Zea maysL cv. Brulouis)were grown in a growth chamber on a nutrient solution withoutP1 over 22 d During the first 2 weeks, Pi-starved plants grewas well as control plants The Pi concentration in the planttissue decreased rapidly with time, which suggests that normalbiomass production can be maintained at the expense of internalP1 In addition, photosynthetic CO2 assimilation measured 4-6h after dawn was not affected, but the concentration of glucose, sucrose, and starch in leaves was much higher than in the controls14CO2 pulse-chase experiments earned out on the ninth day oftreatment showed that 14CO2 assimilation was perturbed duringthis initial period, resulting in a larger flow of carbon toboth starch and sucrose At the beginning of the third week ofP1 starvation (15 d after treatment) 14C incorporation intosucrose stayed high relative to controls but this was not thecase for starch At the end of the third week of P1-deficiency,shoot growth was considerably reduced and fresh weight was onlyone-third of that of the control plants. The P1 concentrationof both the leaf and root tissues was less than 1.0 µmolg–1 FW compared to 20-25µmol g1 FW in the controls.Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation was reduced and the leaf concentrationof sucrose and starch, which had begun to decrease after theend of the second week of P1 limitation, became lower than inthe controls. These results obtained on maize plants show thatphotosynthesis and carbon partitioning between sucrose and starchwere strongly affected by P1 deficiency, similar to C3 species. We studied the responses of Xanthium occidentale (Bertol.) (cockleburor Noogoora burr), a noxious weed, to atmospheric CO2 enrichmentand nitrate-N concentrations in the root zone ranging from 0.5to 25 mM. CO2 enrichment (1500 cm3 m–3) increased dry-matterproduction to about the same extent (18 per cent) at all levelsof supplied N: most of the increment in dry matter was distributedequally between leaves and roots so that there was little effecton shoot-to-root dry-weight ratios. Growth was stimulated greatlyby N and plateaued at 12 mM supplied N. Shoot-to-root dry-weightand total N ratios increased with increasing N supply. CO2 enrichmenthad no effect on the total amount of N accumulated by plants, but increased the N-use efficiency of leaves. Enriched plantshad lower concentrations and quantities of N in their leavesthan controls, and therefore lower shoot-to-root total N ratios.Little free NO3 accumulated in organs of control or enrichedplants. NO3 was the major form of N in xylem sap fromdetopped plants at low supplied NO3-N, but amino N was equalin importance at high supplied NO3-N in control and enrichedplants. Concentrations of NO3 were lower in the xylemsap of CO2 enriched plants. It was concluded that the betterN-use efficiency of CO2 enriched plants could result in increasedgrowth of X. occidentale in regions of marginal soil fertilityas atmospheric levels of CO2 increase. Inoculating Proctor barley leaves with Erysiphe graminis decreasedrates of photosynthesis, after an initial lag period, and increasedrespiration. Increasing the area inoculated progressively decreased ratesof photosynthesis, but the effects cannot be attributed to asimple loss of leaf area. When less than 30 per cent of a leafwas inoculated, decreases were equivalent to area losses greaterthan those inoculated; when more than 30 per cent was inoculatedthe photo-synthetic losses were equivalent to area losses lessthan those inoculated. Although the relative effects of E. graminis on photosynthesisand respiration were of the same order, the absolute effectson photosynthesis were greater than those on respiration. Inoculating30 per cent of a leaf decreased photosynthesis by 5–6mg CO2/dm2/hr from 12.9 in the uninoculated controls to 7.3.Respiration increased by 0.6 mg CO2/dm/hr, from 1.7 to 2.3-  相似文献

Agrostis capillaris L.5, Festuca vivipara L. and Poaalpina L.were grown in outdoor open-top chambers at either ambient (340 3µmol mol–1) or elevated (6804µmol mol–1)concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) for periodsfrom 79–189 d. Photosynthetic capacity of source leaves of plants grown atboth ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations was measured atsaturating light and 5% CO2. Dark respiration of leaves wasmeasured using a liquid phase oxygen electrode with the buffersolution in equilibrium with air (21% O2, 0.034% CO2). Photo-syntheticcapacity of P. alpina was reduced by growth at 680 µmolmol–1 CO2 by 105 d, and that of F. vivipara was reducedat 65 d and 189 d after CO2 enrichment began, suggesting down-regulationor acclimation. Dark respiration of successive leaf blades ofall three species was unaltered by growth at 680 relative to340 µmol mol–1 CO2. In F. vivipara, leaf respirationrate was markedly lower at 189 d than at either 0 d or 65 d,irrespective of growth CO2 concentration. There was a significantlylower total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) concentrationin the leaf blades and leaf sheaths of A. capillaris grown at680µmol mol–1 CO2. TNC of roots of A. capillariswas unaltered by CO2 treatment. TNC concentration was increasedin both leaves and sheaths of P. alpina and F. vivipara after105 d and 65 d growth, respectively. A 4-fold increase in thewater-soluble fraction (fructan) in P. alpina and in all carbohydratefractions in F. vivipara accounted for the increased TNC content. In F. vivipara the relationship between leaf photosyn-theticcapacity and leaf carbohydrate concentration was such that therewas a strong positive correlation between photosynthetic capacityand total leaf N concentration (expressed on a per unit structuraldry weight basis), and total nitrogen concentration of successivemature leaves reduced with time. Multiple regression of leafphotosynthetic capacity upon leaf nitrogen and carbohydrateconcentrations further confirmed that leaf photosynthetic capacitywas mainly determined by leaf N concentration. In P. alpina, leaf photosynthetic capacity was mainly determined by leaf CHOconcentration. Thus there is evidence for down-regulation ofphotosynthetic capacity in P. alpina resulting from increasedcarbohydrate accumulation in source leaves. Leaf dark respiration and total N concentration were positivelycorrelated in P. alpina and F. vivipara. Leaf dark respirationand soluble carbohydrate concentration of source leaves werepositively correlated in A. capillaris. Changes in source leafphotosynthetic capacity and carbohydrate concentration of plantsgrown at ambient or elevated CO2 are discussed in relation toplant growth, nutrient relations and availability of sinks forcarbon. Rates of net photosynthesis of the flag leaves of 15 genotypesof wheat and related species were measured throughout theirlife, using intact leaves on plants grown in the field. At thestage when rates were maximal, they were in general highestfor the diploid species, intermediate for the tetraploidspeciesand lowest for Triticum aestivum (means of 38, 32 and 28 mgCO2 dm–2 h–1 respectively). Rates were stronglynegatively correlated with leaf area, leaf width and the meanplan area per mesophyll cell and positvely correlated with stomatalfrequency and number of veins per mm of leaf width. The differencesamong species in these attributes were mainly related to ploidylevel. It was not possible to determine the relative importanceof each anatomical feature, though the changes in stomatal frequencyhad only slight effects on stomatal conductance and the observeddifferences in rates of photosynthesis were much greater thanwould be expected from those in stomatal conductance alone. There was genetic variation in rates of light dependent oxygenevolution of isolated protoplasts and intact chloroplasts butno difference attributable to ploidy. The mean rate, 91 µmolO2 mg–1 chlorophyll h–1, equivalent to 3.9 mg CO2mg-1chlorophyll h-1 was considerably less than the rate of photosynthesisin comparable intact leaves, which was 7.2 mg CO2 mg–1chlorophyll h–1. The total above-ground dry matter yields were least for thewild diploids T. urartu and T. thauodar and the wild tetraploidT. dicoccoides, but the other wild diploids produced as muchdry matter as the hexaploids. The prospects of exploiting differences in photosynthetic ratein the breeding of higher yielding varieties are discussed. Single clonal plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L) grownfrom explants in a Perlite rooting medium, and dependent fornitrogen on N2 fixation in root nodules, were grown for severalweeks in controlled environments which provided two regimesof CO2, and temperature 23/18 °C day/night temperaturesat 680 µmol mol–1 CO2, (C680), and 20/15 °Cday/night temperatures at 340 µmol mol–1 CO2 (C340)After 3–4 weeks of growth, when the plants were acclimatedto the environmental regimes, leaf and whole-plant photosynthesisand respiration were measured using conventional infra-red gasanalysis techniques Elevated CO2 and temperature increased ratesof photosynthesis of young, fully expanded leaves at the growthirradiance by 17–29%, despite decreased stomatal conductancesand transpiration rates Water use efficiency (mol CO2 mol H2O–1)was also significantly increased Plants acclimated to elevatedCO2, and temperature exhibited rates of leaf photosynthesisvery similar to those of C340 leaves ‘instantaneously’exposed to the C680 regime However, leaves developed in theC680 regime photosynthesised less rapidly than C340 leaves whenboth were exposed to a normal CO2, and temperature environmentIn measurements where irradiance was varied, the enhancementof photosynthesis in elevated CO2 at 23 °C increased graduallyfrom approx 10 % at 100 µmol m–1 s–1 to >27 % at 1170 µmol m–2 s–1 In parallel, wateruse efficiency increased by 20–40 % at 315 µmolm–2 s–1 In parallel, water use efficiency increasedby 20–40 % at 315 µmol m–2 s–1 In parallel, water use efficiency increased by 20–40 % at 315 µmolm–2 s–1 In parallel, water use efficiency increasedby 20–40 % at 315 µmol m–2 s–1 to approx100 % at the highest irradiance Elevated CO2, and temperatureincreased whole-plant photosynthesis by > 40 %, when expressedin terms of shoot surface area or shoot weight No effects ofelevated CO2 and temperature on rate of tissue respiration, either during growth or measurement, were established for singleleaves or for whole plants Dependence on N2, fixation in rootnodules appeared to have no detrimental effect on photosyntheticperformance in elevated CO2, and temperature Trifolium repens, white clover, photosynthesis, respiration, elevated CO2, elevated temperature, water use efficiency, N2 fixation  相似文献

Parallel to the increase in atmospheric CO2 from 278 µmolmol–1 in AD 1750 to the current ambient level of 348 µmolmol–1, there have been overall decreases in leaf nitrogencontent and stomatal density from 144% and 121%, respectively,in AD 1750 to 100% today of herbarium specimens of 14 trees, shrubs, and herbs collected over the last 240 years in Catalonia,a Mediterranean climate area. These decreases were steeper duringthe initial slower increases in CO2 atmospheric levels as comparedwith the relatively faster CO2 increases in recent years. Thedeclines in leaf N content and stomatal density have also beenreported in experimental studies on leaves of plants grown underenriched CO2 environments. Meanwhile, the stomatal index andoverall carbon and sulphur leaf contents have not changed significantly.Leaf S content was higher in the 1940s samples coinciding withthe burning of increased quantities of sulphur-rich coal. Consequently, the epidermal cell density has decreased parallel to the stomataldensity and the C/N ratio of leaves has increased, implyingpossible important consequences on herbivores, decomposers, and ecosystems. An overall decrease in the specific leaf area(SLA) from 184% in the 18th century to 100% today has also beenfound, as would be expected under CO2 enrichment, but whichmight also be an artifact of prolonged storage. Pascopyrum smithii (C3) andBouteloua gracilis (C4) are importantforage grasses native to the Colorado shortgrass steppe. Thisstudy investigated photosynthetic responses of these grassesto long-term CO2enrichment and temperature in relation to leafnonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) and [N]. Glasshouse-grown seedlingswere transferred to growth chambers and grown for 49 d at twoCO2concentrations (380 and 750 µmol mol-1) at 20 and 35°C, and two additional temperatures (25 and 30 °C) at750 µmol mol-1CO2. Leaf CO2exchange rate (CER) was measuredat a plant's respective growth temperature and at two CO2concentrationsof approx. 380 and 700 µmol mol-1. Long-term CO2enrichmentstimulated CER in both species, although the response was greaterin the C3,P. smithii . Doubling the [CO2] from 380 to 750 µmolmol-1stimulated CER ofP. smithii slightly more in plants grownand measured at 30 °C compared to plants grown at 20, 25or 35 °C. CO2-enriched plants sometimes exhibited lowerCER when compared to ambient-grown controls measured at thesame [CO2], indicating photosynthetic acclimation to CO2growthregime. InP. smithii , such reductions in CER were associatedwith increases in TNC and specific leaf mass, reductions inleaf [N] and, in one instance, a reduction in leaf conductancecompared to controls. InB. gracilis , photosynthetic acclimationwas observed more often, but significant changes in leaf metabolitelevels from growth at different [CO2] were generally less evident.Temperatures considered optimal for growth (C3: 20 °C; C4:35 °C) sometimes led to CO2-induced accumulations of TNCin both species, with starch accumulating in the leaves of bothspecies, and fructans accumulating only inP. smithii. Photosynthesisof both species is likely to be enhanced in future CO2-enrichedand warmer environments, although responses will sometimes beattenuated by acclimation. Seeds of apple cv. Golden Delicious were germinated and cultivatedin the greenhouse until the third leaf emerged. Respirationofgerminating seeds or photosynthesis of the first leaves wasmeasured by infra-red gas analysis and porometry, respectively. To study the role of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC),the dominant carboxylase in the carbon economy, its CO2 refixationpotentialwas related to the amount of CO2 lost in respiration. With arange of 0.2 (dry seeds) to 18 (cotyledons) µmol CO2 h–1g–1 PEPC activity resembled or exceeded the amount ofC02 lost in respiration before the third leaf developed. Itis concludedthat PEPC largely contributes to economize the carbonmetabolism of apple seedlings before they become photosyntheticallycompetent. Respiratory Loss of Recently Assimilated Carbon in Wheat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A series of experiments was undertaken to assess the amountof respiration associated with the growth of wheat at differentstages. Plants (or in some cases just the flag leaf) were labelledwith 14CO2 and the amount of 14CO2 respired during the subsequent48 or 72 h was measured. The evolution of 14C, expressed asa percentage of the amount initially assimilated (referred toas the R/A value) was used as a measure of the overall efficiencyof dry matter production. Respiratory 14CO2 evolution from labelledplants was most rapid in the first 12 h after labelling, thereafterdeclining rapidly. Evolution was also more rapid following labellingsat the end of the light period (dusk) than at the beginningof it (dawn). The R/A values were greatest (42 and 50 per centrespectively for dawn- and dusk-labelled plants) for young plantsand least (13 and 28 per cent respectively) for plants duringmid grain filling. When flag leaves, as distinct from wholeplants, were labelled, R/A values were lower still (9 and 21per cent respectively), indicating that flag leaf assimilatewas used efficiently in grain production. The calculated minimum R/A for the formation of grain material(10 per cent protein, 90 per cent starch) was 6.2 per cent. That the experimentally determined values were greater thanthis is attributed to the turnover of carbon in enzymes, toother maintenance processes, and possibly to the operation ofthe pentose phosphate pathway of glucose oxidation. R/A valueswere lower in those plants labelled at the beginning than thoseat the end of the photoperiod. This was considered to be a consequenceof refixation of respiratory 14CO2 during the light. The higherR/A values found for young plants were considered to be a consequenceof the greater percentage of 14C translocated to the roots (rootsbeing unable to refix respired CO2) and of greater turnoverof enzymes associated with more active metabolism. Effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment to a level above 600 parts10–6 on leaf and canopy gas exchange characteristics wereinvestigated in Trifolium repens, using an open system for gasexchange measurement. The cuvettes of the system served as growthchambers, allowing continuous measurement in a semi-controlledenvironment of ±350 and ±600 parts 10–6CO2, respectively. Carbon balance data were compared with cropyield and effects on the canopy level were compared with measuredleaf responses of photosynthesis and stomatal behaviour. Photosyntheticstimulation by high CO2 was stronger at the canopy level (103%on average) than for leaves (90% in full light), as a consequenceof accelerated foliage area development. The latter increasedabsolute water consumption by 16%, despite strong stomatal closure. The overall result was a 63% improvement in canopy water useefficiency (WUE), while leaf WVE increased almost 3-fold insaturating light. The stomatal response was such that, whilethe internal CO2 concentration in the leaf, ch increased withrising atmospherical CO2 concentration, ca, ci/ca was somewhatdecreased. Total canopy resistance, Rc, was generally lowerat high CO2 levels, despite higher leaf resistance. Higher canopyCO2 loss at night and faster light extinction in a larger-sizedhigh CO2 canopy were major drawbacks which prevented a furtherincrease in dry matter production (the harvest index was increasedby a factor 1.83). Key words: CO2 enrichment, canopy CO2 exchange, carbon balance, water use efficiency, leaf and canopy resistance  相似文献
