A tumor was found for the first time in a mussel Mytilus trossulus from a heavily polluted area of Nakhodka Bay, Sea of Japan. Tumor cells were found in the connective tissue of different organs and also in gill vessels and hemal sinuses of the visceral mass. They were both attached and diffuse. The tumor was at an advanced stage, replacing the normal connective tissue cells, and formed nodes. The tumor cells were polymorphic, with a high nucleocytoplasmic ratio, and had a prominent nucleolus. The size of their nuclei was three to five times that of the nuclei of agranular hemocytes. The mitotic activity of the tumor cells was more than an order of magnitude higher than in the normal cells: the mean mitotic index was 1.4 +/- 0.5%, ranging from 0.97 to 2.3% in different organs. The mitotic indices in the connective tissue cells of three normal mussels were 0, 0, and 0.12%. A significant proportion (up to 78%) of the mitotic cells were at metaphase. The frequency of abnormal mitoses was 17%. Metaphases with displaced (often multiple) chromosomes constituted 71% of abnormal mitoses; anaphases, 8%; and tri- and tetrapolar mitoses, 11%. The tumor described is similar to diffuse sarcomatoid diseases of mussels from other geographical regions.  相似文献

Our studies show that seawater from different sites in Nakhodka Bay has a deleterious effect on the development of the sea urchinStrongylocentrotus intermedius. As development proceeded to the pluteus I stage, the percentage of abnormal larvae maintained in water from Nakhodka, Novitskogo, and Vrangelya Bights increased markedly (66.7±2.2, 67.1±2.6, and 54.6±1.8%, respectively). These larvae developed more slowly, were smaller, and differed from those in the control in the intensity of color of their echinochrome granules. In water from Nakhodka and Novitskogo bights, larval survival rates were lower than in the control. This suggests that the water of Nakhodka Bay is heavily polluted, especially in its harbor areas.  相似文献

The morphology of gonads and development of offspring of the scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis sampled from six stations in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) were studied. The retardation of gametogenesis, oocytes resorption, autolysis of spermatozoa and their phagocytosis were observed in the gonads of the scallops from polluted sites. The number of hermaphrodites was about 6% against 0.3–0.4% in the scallop populations from clean areas. In the offspring development, a decrease in fertilisation success, diminution in percent of normal trochophores, D-veligers, veligers, and retardation of larval growth were recorded. The scallop populations inhabiting polluted areas of Peter the Great Bay seem to be incapable of normal reproduction. Development of offspring was a more sensitive index of disturbance of the reproductive function than morphology of scallop gonads. Analysis of the offspring development of common species of marine invertebrates is suggested to be used as a sensitive indicator of adverse environmental conditions. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The fouling of mooring facilities in Nakhodka Bay, Sea of Japan, has been studied. The main fouling communities have been distinguished dominated by green algae Enteromorpha linza and Ulva fenestrata, brown algae Laminaria japonica and Costaria costata, a hydroid Obelia longissima, a polychaete Pseudopotamilla occelata, cirripede barnacles Balanus crenatus and Semibalanus cariosus, a bivalve mollusk Mytilus trossulus, and an ascidian Halocynthia aurantium. The naturalization of some species-invaders in the fouling of mooring facilities in Nakhodka Bay has been registered, namely hydroids Laomedea flexuosa and Clytia languida, a polychaete Pseudopotamilla occelata, and a bryozoan Bowerbankia gracilis.  相似文献

The 525 strains of heterotrophic bacteria isolated from natural and cultured populations of the mussel Mytilus trossulus and the surrounding seawater were identified to a genus level on the basis of phenotypic analysis and the fatty acid composition of cell lipids. Gram-negative isolates were dominated by six genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae and by the genera Pseudoalteromonas, Vibrio, Photobacterium, Cytophaga/Flavobacterium/Bacteroides, Pseudomonas, and Moraxella. Gram-positive isolates were mainly represented by the genus Streptomyces. The taxonomic compositions of natural and cultured populations of the mussel M. trossulus in Peter the Great Bay were similar.  相似文献

Allozyme variability was assessed, using starch gel electrophoresis, at 15 polymorphic loci in two samples of the Pacific mussel Mytilus trossulus collected from local populations in heavily (Golden Horn Bay) and slightly polluted areas (Sukhoputnaya Bay) of Peter the Great Bay. Significant differences between samples were found in the genotypic frequencies at nine loci and in allele frequencies, at six loci. The results are suggestive of the differential survival of individuals having different genotypes and alleles at some of the surveyed loci under conditions of pollution. Our data are not in conflict with the hypothesis of the adaptive significance of allozyme polymorphism.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a histological study of the internal organs of the plaicePleuronectes obscurus from a polluted part of Amurskii Bay, Sea of Japan. A variety of histomorphological alterations were found in the gills and liver, while the kidney and spleen were affected to a lesser degree. The most frequent lesions in gills were edemas of gill lamellae, epithelial detachments, fusions of the secondary lamellae, hypertrophies and hyperplasias of respiratory cells, pigment accumulations, the presence of parasites, increased quantities of mucous cells, lymphocyte infiltrations, and disturbances of blood circulation. Characteristic morphological changes in the liver were lipid and hydropic dystrophy, pigment accumulation, and the presence of regenerative and necrotic foci. Telangiectasia, globate filaments, and xenomas were found in the gills ofP. obscurus for the first time. These morphological alterations appear to be a result of the chronic effect of pollution in Amurskii Bay.  相似文献

Allozyme variability in 16 polymorphic loci in two size cohorts of large (30.0 ± 6.3 mm) and small (9.8 ± 2.3 mm) spat of the mussel Mytilus trossulus (Gould) coinhabiting the intertidal zone in Brazhnikov Bay (Amursky Bay, Sea of Japan) was studied 1988–1989. It was determined that the size cohorts compared were highly similar genetically; Nei's minimum distances were 0.014 and 0.016 in 1988 and in 1989. However, statistically significant differences in allele frequencies were found at 2 loci, both in 1988 and in 1989. The loci differing by allele frequencies in 1988 did not coincide with those in 1989. Significant differences by heterozygosity between the cohorts were found only at the Idg-1 and Est-3 loci, 1988; and at the Aat-1, 6-Fgd, Est-3 loci, 1989; but the average heterozygosity was not significantly different in the cohorts for both years. A deficiency of heterozygotes (Dg) was observed almost at all loci in both cohorts. The mean Dg values were significantly higher in the cohort of small size individuals. Since the environmental conditions for both cohorts were similar, the allozyme differences between them were not a result of natural selection. A possible cause of the allozyme and size differences among the mussel cohorts is the gap in the settling time of larvae, which entails the formation of two size cohorts of mussels. Such a gap was caused by protraction of spawning period of M. trossulus and by the formation of segregate larval pools from various mussel populations differing in allele frequencies.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of three hydrochemical surveys performed in October 2000 and May and July 2001 and microbiological monitoring performed in June, July, and August 2001 in Vostok Bay (Sea of Japan), which is a favorite recreation area for the inhabitants of Primorye and the Russian Far East. It is shown that at the height of recreation occurs during late summer, as determined by the concentration of water-dissolved oxygen, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), the concentration of detergents, and the number of colony-forming enterobacteria in 1 ml of water. However, in autumn, especially by October, the anthropogenic pressure decreases and the quality of the water environment in the bay improves.  相似文献

We studied the karyotype of the frog sculpinMyoxocephalus stelleri Tilesius (Cottidae) from Peter the Great Bay: 2n=40; NF=46. In the series of two-armed chromosomes, there is a pair of large submetacentric ones, while there are two pairs of large subtelocentric chromosomes in the one-armed series. Ag-NOR staining revealed nucleolus organizer regions in the short arms of two pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes that differed in size. We found neither differences between male and female karyotypes nor variability of any type. The karyotype ofM. stelleri is compared with that of the short-spined sea scorpionM. scorpius.  相似文献

Eight polymorphic loci were surveyed in three samples of the gastropodTegula rustica collected in a clean area of Peter the Great Bay and in three samples from a heavily polluted area of the bay. Macrospatial, microspatial, and temporal differences in allele frequencies and heterozygosity were found at some of the loci; however, the genetic similarity among the samples was very high. It is concluded that allozyme variability at the surveyed loci ofT. rustica cannot be used in pollution monitoring of Peter the Great Bay.  相似文献

The taxonomic composition of marine mycelial fungi was determined in the interstitial habitats of the Vostok Bay littoral (Peter the Great Bay, the Sea of Japan). A total of 39 species of ascomycetes and anamorphic fungi were detected and identified. The predominant species of the intertidal zone were Corollospora maritima, C. lacera, Carbosphaerella leptosphaerioides, Arenariomyces trifurcatus (Ascomycota), Alternaria alternata, Scolecobasidium arenarium, and Zalerion maritimum (anamorphic fungi). The complete list of species of obligately marine ascomycetes and anamorphic fungi from the interstitial habitats of the Vostok Bay littoral is presented for the first time  相似文献

The fine structure of the gametes in six sea urchin species of the Sea of Japan was studied. The sperm in Strongylocentrotus nudus, S. intermedius, Echinocardium cordatum, Scaphechinus mirabilis, Sc. griseus and Echinarachnius parma are species-specific. The conical head and symmetrically disposed ring-shape mitochondrion are common to regular sea urchin sperm cells. S. nudus is characterized by the bulb-shaped head of the sperm; S. intermedius, by a bullet-shaped one. The sperm spearhead and small amount of post-acrosome material are common to irregular sea urchins; the sperm width: length ratio varies for different species, with the highest for Sc. mirabilis. The sperm of Sc. griseus is characterized by two lipid drops in the middle part of sperm. Asymmetrical mitochondrion disposal is usual for E. parma. Actin filaments are found in the postacrosome material in the sperm of heart-shaped sea urchins. The differences in the fine structure of sperm in cosmopolitan species Ech. cordatum inhabiting the Sea of Japan and coastal areas of the Northeast Atlantic may bear record to the complex existence of species Ech. cordatum. The fine structure of sperm is unique for each of the studied families, Strongylocentrotidae, Scutellidae, and Loveniidae. The eggs of all the species are characterized by vitelline and jelly-like membranes. The vitelline membrane is formed by cytoplasm protrusions; the area between them is filled with fibrillar material. The jelly-like membrane is formed by fibrillar material associated with apical parts of microvilli of the vitelline membrane. The irregular sea urchins Sc. griseus, Sc. mirabilis and E. parma are characterized by chromatophores situated in the jelly-like membrane, with the highest abundance in Sc. mirabilis.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of sperm in seven species of bivalves, the representatives of six families, Arcidae (Anadara broughtonii, Arca boucardi), Anomiidae (Pododesmus macrochisma), Tellinidae (Macoma tokyoensis), Ostreidae (Crassostrea gigas), Myidae (Mya japonica) and Trapezidae (Trapezium liratum) is described. All the studied sperm were typical tail sperm, adapted to external insemination, which, however, had a specific structure. Differences were revealed in the form of head, acrosome structure and number of mitochondria. The studied species of the above families had their specific morphology, the Arcidae species had a bullet- or barrel-shaped head with four or five mitochondria in the middle part; the Anomiidae had conic head, the acrosome with periacrosome material and four mitochondria (a basic feature of sperm is the axial core entering periacrosome material and consisting of bundle of actin filaments); the Myidae had a curved conic head and four mitochondria; in the Tellinidae the head was bullet-shaped, the periacrosome material contained a fibril component and four mitochondria; the Trapezidae had sperm of a conic form with spherical acrosome. The spherical sperm of C. gigas were similar to sperm of Saccostrea commercialis and Crassostrea virginica, but with some distinctions in the acrosome substructure. The morphology of sperm testified to the correct attribution of the Crassostreidae family as a synonym to the Ostreidae family.  相似文献
