The feasibility of using fish (Labeo rohita) scales as low-cost biosorbent for the removal of hazardous Malachite Green (MG) dye from aqueous solutions was investigated. Employing a batch experimental setup, the effect of operational parameters such as biosorbent dose, initial solution pH, contact time, and temperature on the dye removal process was studied. The equilibrium biosorption data followed both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, whereas the experimental kinetic data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic study indicated spontaneous and endothermic nature of the biosorption process. The results suggest that fish scales could be used as an effective biosorbent for removal of MG dye from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The studies aimed at the feasibility of using Enteromorpha prolifera for the removal of ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were carried out for the biosorption of ciprofloxacin onto Enteromorpha prolifera. The factors affecting the biosorption process such as the initial concentration, dosage, pH and the contact time were studied. Enteromorpha prolifera exhibited a maximum biosorption capacity of 21.7 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model described the ciprofloxacin biosorption process with a good fitting. The optimum pH of ciprofloxacin adsorbed by Enteromorpha prolifera was 10. Biosorption equilibrium studies demonstrated that the biosorption followed Freundlich isotherm model, which implied a heterogeneous biosorption phenomenon.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to enhance the biosorption capacity of a waste biomass of Punica granatum L. peels (PGL) using various chemical modification agents. Among these agents, hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) indicated the best performance with regard to the improvement of lead(II) ions removal from aqueous solution. The characterization of HMDA-modified P. granatum L. peels (HMDA-PGL) was achieved by using elemental analysis, FT-IR, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and zeta potential measurement techniques. Based on FT-IR study, the chemical modification of P. granatum L. peels take place with its carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl, etc. groups and these groups are responsible for the biosorption of lead(II) ions onto modified biomass. Biosorption equilibrium and kinetic data fitted well the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. The highest biosorption capacity obtained from Langmuir isotherm model was 371.36 mg g?1. Biosorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in nature according to the thermodynamic results and it quickly reached the equilibrium within 60 minutes. The validity of kinetic models used in this study can be quantitatively tested by using a normalized standard deviation Δq(%).  相似文献

In this study, batch removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions by powdered Colocasia esculenta leaves was investigated. Batch experiments were conducted to study the effects of adsorption of Cr(VI) at different pH values, initial concentrations, agitation speeds, temperatures, and contact times. The biosorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis. The biosorptive capacity of the adsorbent was dependent on the pH of the chromium solution in which maximum removal was observed at pH 2. The adsorption equilibrium data were evaluated for various adsorption isotherm models, kinetic models, and thermodynamics. The equilibrium data fitted well with Freundlich and Halsey models. The adsorption capacity calculated was 47.62 mg/g at pH 2. The adsorption kinetic data were best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thus, Colocasia esculenta leaves can be considered as one of the efficient and cheap biosorbents for hexavalent chromium removal from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Biosorption of cadmium (II) ions from aqueous solution onto immobilized cells of Pycnoporus sanguineus (P. sanguineus) was investigated in a batch system. Equilibrium and kinetic studies were conducted by considering the effect of pH, initial cadmium (II) concentration, biomass loading and temperature. Results showed that the uptake of cadmium (II) ions increased with the increase of initial cadmium (II) concentration, pH and temperature. Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models were used to analyze the equilibrium data at different temperatures. Langmuir isotherm model described the experimental data well followed by Redlich-Peterson and Freundlich isotherm models. Biosorption kinetics data were fitted using pseudo-first, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion. It was found that the kinetics data fitted well the pseudo-second-order followed by intraparticle diffusion. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy (Delta G0), standard enthalpy (Delta H0) and standard entropy (Delta S0) were evaluated. The result showed that biosorption of cadmium (II) ions onto immobilized cells of P. sanguineus was spontaneous and endothermic nature.  相似文献

High levels of heavy metals like copper ions in many industrial based effluents lead to serious environmental and health problems. Biosorption is a potential environmental biotechnology approach for biotreatment of aquatic sites polluted with heavy metal ions. Seaweeds have received great attention for their high bioremediation potential in recent years. However, the co-application of marine macroalgae for removal of heavy metals from wastewater is very limited. Thus, for the first time in literature, a coastal seaweed community composed of Chaetomorpha sp., Polysiphonia sp., Ulva sp. and Cystoseira sp. species was applied to remove copper ions from synthetic aqueous medium in this study. The biosorption experiments in batch mode were conducted to examine the effects of operating variables including pH, biosorbent amount, metal ion concentration and contact time on the biosorption process. The biosorption behavior of biosorbent was described by various equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic models. The biosorption of copper ions was strongly influenced by the operating parameters. The results indicated that the equilibrium data of biosorption were best modeled by Sips isotherm model. The values of mean free energy of biosorption computed from Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model and the standard Gibbs free energy change indicated a feasible, spontaneous and physical biotreatment system. The pseudo-second-order rate equation successfully defined the kinetic behavior of copper biosorption. The pore diffusion also played role in the control of biosorption process. The maximum copper uptake capacity of biosorbent was found to be greater than those of many other biosorbents. The obtained results revealed that this novel biosorbent could be a promising material for copper ion bioremediation implementations.  相似文献

In this study, a model synthetic azo dye (Basic red 46) bioremoval by Carpinus betulus sawdust as inexpensive, eco-friendly, and sustainable biosorbent from aqueous solution was examined in a batch biosorption system. The effective environmental parameters on the biosorption process, such as the value of pH, amount of biosorbent, initial dye concentration and contact time were optimized using classical test design. The possible dye-biosorbent interaction was determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The equilibrium, thermodynamic, and kinetic studies for the biosorption of Basic red 46 onto the sawdust biomass were performed. In addition, a single-stage batch dye biosorption system was also designed. The dye biosorption yield of biosorbent was significantly influenced by the change of operating variables. The experimental data were best described by the Freundlich isotherm model and both the pseudo-first-order kinetic and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamic research indicated that the biosorption of dye was feasible and spontaneous. Based on the Langmuir isotherm model, the biosorbent was found to have a maximum biosorption potential higher than many other biosorbents in the literature (264.915?mg g?1). Thus, this investigation presents a novel green option for the assessment of waste sawdust biomass as a cheap and effective biosorbent material.  相似文献

The biosorption data of hexavalent chromium by marine brown algae Cystoseira indica, which was chemically modified by crosslinking with epichlorohydrin (CB1, CB2), or oxidized by potassium permanganate (CB3), or only washed with distilled water (RB), has been used for kinetic studies based on fractional power, Elovich, pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order rate expressions. Five three parameter biosorption isotherm models, viz. Redlich–Peterson, Sips, Khan, Radke–Prausnitz and Toth are tested for their applicability apart from 6 two-parameter models. Non-linear curve fitting procedure was adopted for fitting the kinetic as well as equilibrium data in the kinetic and isotherm models and for the determination of parameters. The time-dependent Cr(VI) biosorption data were well-described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The intraparticle diffusion study revealed that film diffusion might be involved in Cr(VI) biosorption in the present case. Among the two-parameter models, the Langmuir model produces the best fit, while, among the three-parameter models, the best fit is produced by the Khan model, for the biosorption of Cr(VI) on all the four biosorbents studied.  相似文献

Biosorption is a promising alternative method to replace the existing conventional technique for Cr(VI) removal from the industrial effluent. In the present experimental design, the removal of Cr(VI) from the aqueous solution was studied by Aspergillus niger MSR4 under different environmental conditions in the batch systems. The optimum conditions of biosorption were determined by investigating pH (2.0) and temperature (27°C). The effects of parameters such as biomass dosage (g/L), initial Cr(VI) concentration (mg/L) and contact time (min) on Cr(VI) biosorption were analyzed using a three parameter Box–Behnken design (BBD). The experimental data well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm, in comparison to the other isotherm models tested. The results of the D-R isotherm model suggested that a chemical ion-exchange mechanism was involved in the biosorption process. The biosorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicates that the rate limiting step is chemisorption process. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic studies revealed the possible involvement of functional groups, such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino and carbonyl group in the biosorption process. The thermodynamic parameters for Cr(VI) biosorption were also calculated, and the negative ∆Gº values indicated the spontaneous nature of biosorption process.  相似文献

The feasibility for the removal of Acid Blue25 (AB25) by Bengal gram fruit shell (BGFS), an agricultural by-product, has been investigated as an alternative for high-cost adsorbents. The impact of various experimental parameters such as dose, different dye concentration, solution pH, and temperature on the removal of Acid Blue25 (AB25) has been studied under the batch mode of operation. pH is a significant impact on the sorption of AB25 onto BGFS. The maximum removal of AB25 was achieved at a pH of 2 (83.84%). The optimum dose of biosorbent was selected as 200 mg for the removal of AB25 onto BGFS. Kinetic studies reveal that equilibrium reached within 180 minutes. Biosorption kinetics has been described by Lagergren equation and biosorption isotherms by classical Langmuir and Freundlich models. Equilibrium data were found to fit well with the Langmuir and Freundlich models, and the maximum monolayer biosorption capacity was 29.41 mg g?1 of AB25 onto BGFS. The kinetic studies indicated that the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model fitted the experimental data well. In addition, thermodynamic parameters have been calculated. The biosorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature with negative values of ΔG° (?1.6031 to ?0.1089 kJ mol?1) and ΔH° (?16.7920 kJ mol?1). The negative ΔG° indicates the feasibility of physical biosorption process. The results indicate that BGFS could be used as an eco-friendly and cost-effective biosorbent for the removal of AB25 from aqueous solution.  相似文献

Biosorption of Acid Blue 40 (AB40) onto cone biomass of Thuja orientalis was studied with variation in the parameters of pH, contact time, biosorbent and dye concentration and temperature to estimate the equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The AB40 biosorption was fast and the equilibrium was attained within 50 min. Equilibrium data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model in the studied concentration range of AB40 and at various temperatures. Maximum biosorption capacity (q(max)) for AB40 was 2.05 x 10(-4)mol g(-1) or 97.06 mg g(-1) at 20 degrees C. The changes of Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy of biosorption were also evaluated for the biosorption of AB40 onto T. orientalis. The results indicate that the biosorption was spontaneous and exothermic. Kinetics of biosorption of AB40 was analyzed and rate constants were also derived and the results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model agrees very well with the experimental data.  相似文献

The biosorption of cadmium ions onto entrapped Trametes versicolor mycelia has been studied in a batch system. The maximum experimental biosorption capacities for entrapped live and dead fungal mycelia of T. versicolor were found as 102.3 +/- 3.2 mg Cd(II) g(-1) and 120.6 +/- 3.8 mg Cd(II) g(-1), respectively. Biosorption equilibrium was established in about 1 h and biosorption was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich biosorption isotherms. The change in the biosorption capacity with time was found to fit the pseudo-second-order equation. Since the biosorption capacities were relatively high for both entrapped live and dead forms, those fungal forms could be considered as suitable biosorbents for the removal of cadmium in wastewater-treatment systems. The biosorbents were reused in three consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles without a significant loss in the biosorption capacity.  相似文献

The performances of nine biosorbents derived from dead fungal biomass were investigated for their ability to remove Reactive Black 5 from aqueous solution. The biosorption data for removal of Reactive Black 5 were readily modeled using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Kinetic analysis based on both pseudo-second-order and Weber-Morris models indicated intraparticle diffusion was the rate limiting step for biosorption of Reactive Black 5 on to the biosorbents. Sorption capacities of the biosorbents were not correlated with the initial biosorption rates. Sensitivity analysis of the factors affecting biosorption examined by an artificial neural network model showed that pH was the most important parameter, explaining 22%, followed by nitrogen content of biosorbents (16%), initial dye concentration (15%) and carbon content of biosorbents (10%). The biosorption capacities were not proportional to surface areas of the sorbents, but were instead influenced by their chemical element composition. The main functional groups contributing to dye sorption were amine, carboxylic, and alcohol moieties. The data further suggest that differences in carbon and nitrogen contents of biosorbents may be used as a selection index for identifying effective biosorbents from dead fungal biomass.  相似文献

Cadmium can enter water, soil, and food chain in amounts harmful to human health by industrial wastes. The use of intact and NaOH-treated dried algal tissues (Hydrodictyon reticulatum), a major ecosystem bio-component, for Cd removal from aqueous solutions was characterized. Cadmium biosorption was found to be dependent on solution pH, bioadsorbent dose, the interaction between pH and dose, contact time, and initial Cd concentration. The experimental results indicated that the biosorption performance of alkaline-treated algal tissues was better than that of intact tissues. The maximum biosorption capacities were 7.40 and 12.74 mg g?1 for intact and alkaline-treated bioadsorbents, respectively, at optimum operating conditions. Biosorption reaches equilibrium after 24 and 240 minutes of contact, respectively, for alkaline-treated and intact bioadsorbents. Cadmium biosorption was best fitted to Langmuir isotherm model (R2 ≈ 0.99) and the kinetic study obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which suggests chemisorption as the rate-limiting step in the biosorption process. Alkaline-treated algal tissues can be used as a new material of low-cost bioadsorbent for continuous flow rate treatment systems.  相似文献

In this study, a low-cost biosorbent, dead mushroom biomass (DMB) granules, was used for investigating the optimum conditions of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II) biosorption from aqueous solutions. Various physicochemical parameters, such as initial metal ion concentration, equilibrium time, pH value, agitation speed, particles diameter, and adsorbent dosage, were studied. Five mathematical models describing the biosorption equilibrium and isotherm constants were tested to find the maximum uptake capacities: Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, and Khan models. The best fit to the Pb(II) and Ni(II) biosorption results was obtained by Langmuir model with maximum uptake capacities of 44.67 and 29.17 mg/g for these two ions, respectively, whereas for Cu(II), the corresponding value was 31.65 mg/g obtained with Khan model. The kinetic study demonstrated that the optimum agitation speed was 400 rpm, at which the best removal efficiency and/or minimum surface mass transfer resistance (MSMTR) was achieved. A pseudo-second-order rate kinetic model gave the best fit to the experimental data (R2 = 0.99), resulting in MSMTR values of 4.69× 10?5, 4.45× 10?6, and 1.12× 10?6 m/s for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Ni(II), respectively. The thermodynamic study showed that the biosorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature.  相似文献

The performance of native and heat-treated anaerobic granular sludge in removing of malachite green (MG) from aqueous solution was investigated with different conditions, such as pH, ionic strength, initial concentration and temperature. The maximum biosorption was both observed at pH 5.0 on the native and heat-treated anaerobic granular sludge. The ionic strength had negative effect on MG removal. Kinetic studies showed that the biosorption process followed pseudo-second-order and qe for native and heat-treated anaerobic granular sludge is 61.73 and 59.17 mg/g at initial concentration 150 mg/L, respectively. Intraparticle diffusion model could well illuminate adsorption process and faster adsorption rate of native anaerobic granular sludge than heat-treated anaerobic granular sludge. The equilibrium data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich model, and well fitted Langmuir model. The negative values of ΔG° and ΔH° suggested that the interaction of MG adsorbed by native and heat-treated anaerobic granular sludge was spontaneous and exothermic. Desorption studies revealed that MG could be well removed from anaerobic granular sludge by 1% (v/v) of HCl–alcohol solution.  相似文献

This paper provided information on the use of linear sweep anodic stripping voltammetry for evaluating the process of copper biosorption onto Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This technique was suited to determine the concentration of free copper ion on site on the mercaptoethane sulfonate modified gold electrode surface without any pretreatment. It was in favor of the study of kinetic process as the fast changing kinetic data characteristic just after the beginning of biosorption could be accurately depicted. Based on the electrochemical results, the kinetics and equilibrium of biosorption were systematically examined. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used to correlate the kinetic experimental data and the kinetic parameters were evaluated. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied to describe the biosorption equilibrium. It was found that the Langmuir isotherm fitted the experimental data better than the Freundlich isotherm. Maximum adsorption capacity of copper ion onto Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 0.9355 μmol mg−1 (about 59.4417 mg g−1).  相似文献

The biosorption characteristics of Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions from aqueous solution using the lichen (Parmelina tiliaceae) biomass were investigated. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as a function of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, and temperature. Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherm of the metal ions by P. tiliaceae biomass. Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich isotherm. The monolayer biosorption capacity of P. tiliaceae biomass for Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions was found to be 75.8 mg/g and 52.1mg/g, respectively. From the D-R isotherm model, the mean free energy was calculated as 12.7 kJ/mol for Pb(II) biosorption and 10.5 kJ/mol for Cr(III) biosorption, indicating that the biosorption of both metal ions was taken place by chemical ion-exchange. The calculated thermodynamic parameters (delta G degrees , delta H degrees and delta S degrees ) showed that the biosorption of Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions onto P. tiliaceae biomass was feasible, spontaneous and exothermic under examined conditions. Experimental data were also tested in terms of biosorption kinetics using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The results showed that the biosorption processes of both metal ions followed well pseudo-second-order kinetics.  相似文献
