The ultrastructural organization of the proboscis in Mesorhynchus terminostylis is distinctly different from that in other members of the Polycystididae in which it is currently classified. The sheath epithelium is formed by three belts, all with intra-epithelial nuclei. The apical belt of the bipartite cone epithelium has a single intrabulbar nucleus, and the basal belt possesses five insunk nucleiferous cell parts behind the bulb. Six types of glands surface through the epithelia; the three types emerging through the cone epithelium can be homologized with those described for Polycistis naegelii. Only uniciliary receptors are found in the epithelium. The musculature in the bulb has a very loose appearance, and the bulbar septum appears to be a bipartite basement membrane. The septum can be considered the basement membrane of the cone epithelium as if the contractile portion of the inner longitudinal muscles have invaded the epithelium and come to lie between the epithelial cells and the basement membrane. Thus the inner musculature of the bulb is entirely intraepithelial as is the case for Psammorhynchus tubulipenis and Cytocystis clitellatus. The systematic position of M. terminostylisremains uncertain but seems to lie between Psammorhynchus and Cytocystis on one hand and Koinocystididae and Polycystididae on the other.  相似文献

The epidermis of the land planarian Arthioposthia triangulatawas examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Thisinvestigation revealed that the flatworm was covered entirely withcilia and was especially densely populated on the ventral surface.In all regions the epidermis consisted of a one-layered columnarepithelium resting on a prominent basement membrane, but lacking aterminal web. Various secretions were found in the epidermistogether with epidermal rhabdoids. Below the basement membraneother secretory material was visible and this included thecytoplasmic lamellated granules and adenal rhabdites. The basementmembrane consisted of fibrils with a beaded appearance and thesewere arranged parallel to the epidermal layer but did not displaycross-banding. The secretory cells above and below the basementmembrane were compared and their products characterized on thebasis of shape, size and location. Their possible function isdiscussed.  相似文献

The epidermis of Friedmaniella sp. has been studied using light and electron microscopy. Three main morphological features characterize its cells, namely (1) DNA bodies in the nuclei, (2) an extensive Golgi apparatus with a well-developed system of transport vesicles, (3) clusters of centrioles mainly in the basal cytoplasm and axonemes and rootlets in the middle and apical cell parts. These peculiarities may indicate continuous physiological regeneration within the cell at the level of cell organelles. DNA bodies may prove to be a taxonomic feature distinguishing the Prolecithophora from other turbellarians.  相似文献

The phylogenetic significance of flatworm sperm morphology is discussed against the background of general spermatology. The modified type of spermatozoon of the Nemertodermatida, a group of primitive flatworms, indicates that the Platyhelminthes evolved from forms characterized by the primitive type of metazoan sperm and by the primitive mode of fertilization, implying the release of sperm freely into sea water.The occurrence of aberrant types of spermatozoa in most platyhelminths is obviously a consequence of early evolution of the internal mode of fertilization, which characterizes all true members of this group. It can be concluded, from the ultrastructure of these aberrant spermatozoa that higher metazoans cannot have evolved from seriated flatworms related to the recent Seriata (Proseriata and Tricladida). Even the seemingly primitive Acoela have such aberrant spermatozoa that evolution of higher metazoans from acoels related to the recent Acoela seems highly improbable.The ultrastructure of the spermatozoa of the parasitic groups of flatworms (Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda) is very similar to that found in the Kalyptorhynchia, a further indication that the parasitic groups are related to the rhabdocoel turbellarians.  相似文献

The female gonad of Platyhelminthes shows a wide variability in its anatomical and cellular organization and submicroscopic structure, and some characteristics may be useful for elucidating the questioned monophyly of some taxa and reconstructing the phylogenetic tree of the group. The morphological characters of the female gonad have been subdivided into three levels: macroscopic, microscopic and ultrastructural, and some examples with potential phylogenetic value are presented for each level. Fine-structural features of female germ cells differentiating within the germaria of Otoplanella baltica and Notocaryoplanella glandulosa are documented and compared with those of other free-living platyhelminths having ectolecithal eggs.In these species, encompassed in the taxon Proseriata Lithophora, insemination of the germocytes occurs within the germaria. A sperm cell, that has penetrated a germocyte differs in special features from mature male germ cells found in the testes, in parts of the male genital system, or even in other regions of the organism. The hypothesis that dense bodies correspond to acrosomal material is supported.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis was performed on the genera and subgenera within the freshwater triclad family Dugesiidae, based on 19 terminal taxa and 17 morphological characters. The phylogenetic tree proposed has length of 27 steps and consistency index of 0.66. This phylogenetic hypothesis implies that the current genus Dugesia is paraphyletic and that its subgenera Girardia, Schmidiea and Dugesia S.S. should be elevated to the rank of genus. The genera Cura, Spathula and Neppia are presumed monophyletic by default because the database was unable to provide autapomorphies for any of these genera. The genera Dugesia S.S. and Neppia share sistergroup relationship. Several characters are discussed which were previously considered to be of phylogenetic importance but were not included in the present analysis. It is emphasized that sensory organs form potentially useful set of phylogenetic characters for the Dugesiidae.  相似文献

Early development in freshwater planarians is generally considered to be highly modified to the point of being unique. A careful examination by TEM, however, suggests that the primary epidermis (Skaer, 1965) is formed in a rather regular manner but is partially inverted with respect to the definitive body axes. After formation of the yolk cell syncytium, the blastomeres enclosed within it increase in number in the central area. Some of these blastomeres then move peripherally as a group and fuse to form another syncytium, the primordium of the primary epidermis. This primordium contacts the surface of the yolk-cell syncytium at the place where the primordium will subsequently flow out. The primordium spreads to the opposite pole through the spaces among the syncytial and non-syncytial yolk cell masses.  相似文献

Recent studies based on molecular data (18S rDNA and partial 28S rDNA) and morphology did not resolve a terminal polytomy within the Polyopisthocotylea. Here, we have used sequences from the full domain D2 of the 28S rDNA for 24 species (18 new sequences) with three phylogenetic methods, maximum parsimony, neighbour-joining and maximum likelihood, to infer the relationships among the Polyopisthocotylea. The analysis of the domain D2 of the 28S rDNA has been performed on two data sets. The first one, complete, included the Polystomatidae as the outgroup in order to infer general relationships, and the second one, reduced, excluded the Polystomatidae and the polyopisthocotylean parasites of chondrichthyans, but used the Mazocraeidae as the outgroup in order to resolve the relationships between the terminal groups. The topology found, sustained by high bootstrap and decay index value, is: (outgroup (Chimaericolidae (Mazocraeidae (Gastrocotylinea, other Polyopisthocotylea)))). The polyopisthocotylean parasites of chondrichthyans are the sister-group of the polyopisthocotylean parasites of teleosts. In the latter, the Mazocraeidae, essentially parasites of Clupeidae, have a basal position. The polytomy between Gastrocotylinea, Discocotylinea and Microcotylinea is partially resolved in this study for the first time: the Gastrocotylinea are the sister-group of an unresolved group including the Microcotylinea, Discocotylinea and Plectanocotylidae. Inclusion of the Plectanocotylidae in the suborder Mazocraeinea is rejected. Monophyly of the Microcotylinea and Plectanocotylidae is confirmed, but monophyly of the Discocotylinea is questioned by the exclusion of Diplozoon.  相似文献

A comparative lightmicroscopical study of the male atrial system of the Polycystididae is presented. Firstly, the different glandular structures associated with the male atrial system are compared. This has lead to the recognition of eight different types of glandular vesicles, four of which are considered prostate, the other four accessory. Secondly, the different hard structures that can be found in the male atrium are discussed and compared. These hard structures can consist of numerous hard spines (armed cirrus), but mostly the hard structure is a single- or double-walled tubiform stylet, or a plate-shaped stylet. Different types of stylets can be recognised, some of which are associated with a prostate vesicle and therefore considered prostate stylets. Using the criteria of position and conjunction, conjectures of homologies are put forward. These primary homologies are compared with homology assessments found in earlier literature.  相似文献

The results of the isolation of repetitive DNA elements in the genome of Dugesia etrusca, a species of the Dugesia gonocephala group, are reported. These sequences, about 1.4 kb long, represent only a part of longer interspersed genomic units (De1 family) and appear to be limited to the genome of some planarians of this group, as indicated by a Southern blot analysis performed in different species and populations. The genomic relationships among different species and populations of the D. gonocephala group are discussed in relation to the results obtained in the present work. The copulatory organ of Haplopharynx quadristimulus Ax, 1971 (Carolina form, Rieger, 1977) consists of a proximal prostatic vesicle and a distal stylet apparatus comprising a central tubular stylet and four to five peripheral accessory spines. By electron microscopy it could be seen that the stylet and spines were intracellular specializations. The copulatory organ can be interpreted as a specialization of an epithelial canal extending from the testes to the body wall. In the complex stylet apparatus, the epithelium was differentiated into six cell types. The stylet, which was formed in a matrix syncytium next to the prostatic vesicle, extended into the lumen of the stylet canal. The interior of the stylet apparatus contained one group of cells that had thick ciliary rootlets and another that had rootlet-like ribbons.The cells that contain the rootlets enveloped bundles of longitudinally arranged muscles. The accessory spines were formed in cells which lay peripheral to the muscle bundles. The spines, stylet, rootlet-like ribbons, and rootlets had similar patterns of periodic cross striations. The similarity in striation patterns suggests that the accessory spines and stylet are composed of modified ciliary rootlets.  相似文献

The existence of the platyhelminth clade Adiaphanida—an assemblage comprising the well‐studied order Tricladida as well as two lesser known taxa, Prolecithophora and the obligate parasitic Fecampiida—is among the more surprising results of flatworm molecular systematics. Each of these three clades is itself largely well‐defined from a morphological point of view, although Adiaphanida at large, despite its strong support in molecular phylogenetic analyses, lacks known morphological synapomorphies. However, one taxon, the genus Genostoma, a parasite of the leptostracan crustacean Nebalia, rests uneasily within its current classification within the fecampiid family Genostomatidae; ultrastructural investigations on this taxon have uncovered a spermatogenesis reminiscent of Kalyptorhynchia, and a dorsal syncytium resembling the neodermatan tegument. Here, we provide molecular sequence data (nearly complete 18S and 28S rRNA) from a representative of Genostoma, with which we test hypotheses on the phylogenetic position of this taxon within Platyhelminthes, expanding upon a recently published phylum‐wide analysis, and applying novel alignment algorithms and substitution models. These analyses unequivocally position Genostoma as the sister group of Prolecithophora. However, even in taxon‐rich analyses, support for the position of the root of Adiaphanida is lacking, highlighting the need for new data types to study the phylogeny of this clade. Interestingly, our analyses also do not recover the monophyly of several taxa previously proposed, notably Continenticola within Tricladida and Protomonotresidae within Prolecithophora. In light of this phylogeny and the distinctive morphology (especially, spermatogenesis) of Genostoma, we advocate for a redefinition of the family Genostomatidae, outside of both Fecampiida and Prolecithophora, to encompass the members of this unique genus of parasites. Within Fecampiida, the family Piscinquilinidae fam. nov. is erected to accommodate the vertebrate‐parasitic Piscinquilinus, formerly Genostomatidae.  相似文献

A phylogenetic reconstruction of the monogenean family Tetraonchidae was carried out by methods of parsimony-based cladistics. The analysis included 20 species of tetraonchids and two out-groups (Sundanonchus tomanorum and Dactylogyrus amphibothrium) and was based on 34 morphofunctional characters. Software PAUP 4.0 and Winclada were used for the phylogenetic reconstructions. Obtained results allow proposing a preliminary phylogenetic hypothesis of the family Tetraonchidae along with the discussion of host-parasite association. According to the current taxonomic view, the family Tetraonchidae included two genera. Cladistic analysis showed a monophyly of the family and the genus Tetraonchus Diesing, 1858. Two representative of the former genus, Tetraoncus monenteron and T. borealis, parasitize the pikes (Esocoformes: Esocidae) and the grayling (Salmonidae: Thymallinae) respectively. The genus Salmonchus Spassky et Roytman, 1958 has a complicated structure and its intrageneric relationships were not completely resolved; in general, the analysis allows to recognise several species groups: Salmonchus oncorhynchi--the parasite of the Oncorhynchus masou smolt living during the first year of life in fresh water; four species (S. variabilis, S. gussevi, S. grumosus, S. alaskensis) inhabiting specifically the whitefishes (Salmonidae: Coregoninae); all reminder of Salmonchus species occurring on the salmons (Salmonidae: Salmoninae). The bootstrap test gives a support only for the following clades: family Tetraonchidae (75%), genus Tetraonchus (88%); a group of Salmonchus species associated with the whitefishes (93%) and grouping of four species (S. huhonis, S. pseudolenoki, S. skrjabini and S. lenoki) from the lenoks (Brachymystax) and taimens (Hucho) (61%).  相似文献

Anoplodiera voluta Westblad, Seritia elegans (Westblad) and Wahlia macrostylifera Westblad are species of the family Umagillidae living in the intestine of the holothurian Parastichopus tremulus. In all three species, part of the epidermis is unciliated, but unlike unciliated epidermis in the major parasitic flat-worm groups, it is cellular and has intraepithelial nuclei. The surface of the unciliated cells in A. voluta is convex with the cells separated by lateral gaps. The cells have two distinct regions: the basal, organelle-rich part and the apical part which contains few identifiable organelles except vesicles. In W. macrostylifera the unciliated cells have a flat surface and, between them, narrower gaps that in some cases widen to paracellular compartments below the cell surface. Apically the cells contain electron-dense vesicles, often in contact with the surface. S. elegans has unciliated cells separated by gaps. In all these species, apical vesicles indicate secretory activity. Comparison of the epidermis of these three species with the neodermis of the major parasitic flatworm groups within the Neodermata does not support a close relationship of the three to the Neodermata.  相似文献

The homology of pharynges within the mostly pharynx‐less Acoela has been a matter of discussion for decades and even the basic question of whether a pharynx is a primitive trait within the Acoela and homologous to the pharynx of platyhelminth turbellarians is open. By using fluorescence staining of musculature, as well as conventional histological techniques and transmission electron microscopy, the present study sets focus on the mouth and pharynx (where present) of seven species of Acoela within Paratomellidae, Solenofilomorphidae, Hofsteniidae, Proporidae, and Convolutidae, as well as one species of Nemertodermatida and Catenulida, respectively. It is shown that among the investigated families of acoels there is a great variability in muscle systems associated with the mouth and pharynx and that pharynx histology and ultrastructural characters are widely diverse. There are no close similarities between the acoel pharynges and the catenulid pharynx but there is a general resemblance of the musculature associated with the mouth in the representatives of Paratomellidae and Nemertodermatida. On the basis of the profound differences in pharynx morphology, three major conclusions are drawn: 1) the pharynges as present in Recent acoels are not homologous to the pharynx simplex characteristic for Catenulida and Macrostomida within the Platyhelminthes; 2) the different muscular pharynx types of acoels are not homologous between higher taxa and thus a single acoel‐type pharynx simplex cannot be defined; 3) the presence of a muscular pharynx most likely does not represent the ancestral state.
