In this brief paper, the author reports on a meeting on copper research (2nd International Meeting on Copper Homeostasis and its Disorders: Molecular and Cellular Aspects) recently held in Ravello, Italy (17–21 September 1999). Aimed at elucidating the diverse roles played by copper ions in biology and medicine, as they are currently intensely investigated worldwide, the meeting has been organized around a number of major topics from prominent areas of copper research. These included the molecular and cellular basis of copper transport, molecular advances in Menkes and Wilson's diseases, the involvement of copper in neurodegenerative diseases, the structure and function of copper metalloproteins.  相似文献

A study of industry’s use of LCA has been performed as a special analysis of the Business Environmental Barometer (B.E.B.). The B.E.B. is an international questionnaire survey on industry’s environmental management practices (LCA included), repeated every two years. The first round in 1993 included the Nordic countries. The 1997 round will include eight European countries. This analysis intends to describe industry’s LCA use as such (e.g. active industrial sectors, applications, changes over time) and differences between companies working with LCA and those not working with LCA. The survey indicates that industry is in the process of internalising LCA knowledge, although most companies are still in the learning phase. LCA companies have more developed environmental management systems than non-LCA companies. A company’s LCA use seems to be a competitor-driven activity, judging from LCA distribution among industrial sectors.  相似文献

We are delighted to announce an international symposium on stem cell research to be held in Shanghai on November 6-9, 2007. This meeting is co-organized by Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and several other research institutions in China, together with the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). This is the first time ISSCR co-organizes a meeting with other organizations. ISSCR will organize a delegacy of 8-10 members to participate the symposium.[第一段]  相似文献

The main aims of the international meeting “Immunotherapy of Cancer: Challenges and Needs” were to review the state of the art of cancer immunotherapy and to identify critical issues which deserve special attention for promoting progress of research in this field, with a particular focus on the perspectives of clinical research. Novel concepts and strategies for identifying, monitoring and predicting effective responses to cancer immunotherapy protocols were presented, focused on the use of adjuvants (CpG oligonucleotides) or cytokines (IFN-alpha) to enhance the efficacy of cancer vaccines. Moreover, the possible advantages of using different types of dendritic cells (for active immunization strategies) or T cells (for adoptive immunotherapy protocols) were debated. A consensus was achieved on the need for enhancing the efficacy of cancer vaccines or adoptive cell immunotherapy by combining these strategies with other anti-cancer treatments, including chemotherapy. Finally, initiatives for promoting clinical research by establishing a strategic cooperation in the field of cancer immunotherapy based on the active participation of all the relevant actors, including public institutions responsible of Public Health, National Cancer Institutes, industry, representatives of regulatory bodies, and patients’ organizations were proposed.  相似文献

October 11-15 October 2008, Jinan University, Guangdong, China Limnology, although showing progress overall, still has many handicaps: there is a lack of understanding of process and functions, of animal and plant diversity, of taxonomy in some climatic regions like the tropics-subtropics, and the teaching of the discipline is lagging so far behind that in many countries that span several climatic zones,  相似文献

Ancestors have often played an important role in the exercise of politics in Indonesia. However, from a situation in which they were highly influential and present in ritual, as well as in the everyday lives of both commoners and kings, ancestors and traditional lifestyles have been increasingly marginalised through the impact of secular politics and Islamist movements. An era of political reformation began after the fall of Indonesia's former political regime, Orde Baru. Reform meant the decentralisation of political power, and this led to a revival of local traditions. This article takes this revival of tradition as a framework to understand meetings that took place with ancestors at local pilgrimage sites on West Java. It is concluded that meetings of this kind are not simply about fulfilling personal goals, but they also show features of resistance and subversion in relation to the dominant political and religious leadership in Indonesia.  相似文献

Founded on ground-breaking discoveries such as the operon model by Jacob and Monod more than 50 years ago, molecular microbiology is now one of the most vibrant disciplines of the life sciences. The first Mol Micro Meeting Würzburg ('M3W') hosted more than 160 scientists from 14 countries to exchange their latest ideas in this field of research. Divided into the four main sessions Gene Regulation, Pathogenesis, Microbial Cell Biology and Signalling, the conference provided insight into current advances and future goals and challenges.  相似文献
