A stabilized hybrid form of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the Spanish sparrow (P. hispaniolensis) is known as Passer italiae from the Italian Peninsula and a few Mediterranean islands. The growing attention for the Italian hybrid sparrow and increasing knowledge on its biology and genetic constitution greatly contrast the complete lack of knowledge of the long‐known phenotypical hybrid sparrow populations from North Africa. Our study provides new data on the breeding biology and variation of mitochondrial DNA in three Algerian populations of house sparrows, Spanish sparrows, and phenotypical hybrids. In two field seasons, the two species occupied different breeding habitats: Spanish sparrows were only found in rural areas outside the cities and bred in open‐cup nests built in large jujube bushes. In contrast, house sparrows bred only in the town centers and occupied nesting holes in walls of buildings. Phenotypical hybrids were always associated with house sparrow populations. House sparrows and phenotypical hybrids started breeding mid of March, and most pairs had three successive clutches, whereas Spanish sparrows started breeding almost one month later and had only two successive clutches. Mitochondrial introgression is strongly asymmetric because about 75% of the rural Spanish sparrow population carried house sparrow haplotypes. In contrast, populations of the Italian hybrid form, P. italiae, were genetically least diverse among all study populations and showed a near‐fixation of house sparrow haplotypes that elsewhere were extremely rare or that were even unique for the Italian Peninsula. Such differences between mitochondrial gene pools of Italian and North African hybrid sparrow populations provide first evidence that different demographic histories have shaped the extant genetic diversity observed on both continents.  相似文献

A kidney from the budgerigar (budgie, parakeet; Melopsittacus undulatus) is composed of cortical reptilian-type nephrons (without loops of Henle) and mammalian-type nephrons (with loops) grouped together in medullary cones. The loop of the mammalian-type nephrons has a descending segment composed of thin and highly interdigitated cells. These thin limb cells have few mitochondria (15% of cell volume), undetectable Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity, and virtually no basolateral surface amplification. Prior to the hairpin turn, the descending limb thickens, but the cells continue to lack basolateral amplification. Cells just prior to and within the hairpin turn resemble cells of the entire ascending limb. These cells are thick (there is no thin ascending segment in the avian loop), with extensive infoldings of the basolateral membrane surrounding numerous mitochondria (45% of cell volume). The area of basolateral membrane is 25 times that of the apical membrane. The basolateral membrane (but not the apical membrane) is enriched in Na+,K(+)-ATPase activity. The structure of the avian mammalian-type nephron (as epitomized by the budgie nephron) and the fact that NaCl accounts for over 90% of the osmotic activity of avian urine leads to the conclusion that the countercurrent multiplier of the avian kidney functions by active NaCl transport from the entire ascending limb. No explanation is offered for the transport specializations found in the thick descending segment of the loop, just prior to the hairpin turn.  相似文献

We characterized 14 polymorphic microsatellite loci in the house sparrow Passer domesticus. Four loci were isolated from house sparrow genomic libraries and 10 loci were identified by testing 100 loci that had been originally isolated in other passerine species. Loci were characterized in 37–54 unrelated sparrows from British and Norwegian populations. Each locus displayed between two and 31 alleles, with the observed heterozygosity ranging between 0.30 and 0.91.  相似文献

Previous histological evaluations of chick kidneys indicated nephrons continue to develop from embryonic foci for up to 6 weeks after hatching. The present study was conducted using an in vivo alcian blue staining technique to quantify posthatch changes in glomerular numbers and sizes in female domestic fowl at 1, 3, 5, 9, 12, 21, and 30 weeks of age. Changes in glomerular size distributions reflect changes in the heterogeneous nephron populations of avian kidneys. Foci of embryonic tissue were observed at the periphery of renal lobules up to 12 weeks of age. Glomerular numbers increased from 69,800/kidney at 1 week to 586,000/kidney at 12 weeks, with no further significant increase up to 30 weeks (599,000/kidney). The increase in glomerular number per gram kidney weight remained constant as kidney mass increased up to 12 weeks of age, after which the number of glomeruli per gram kidney weight declined significantly as kidney size increased without further addition of new nephrons. Glomerular size distribution profiles were constructed using eleven circumference categories. The peak number of glomeruli fell within the 0.11-0.14 mm category at 1 and 3 weeks; within the 0.15-0.18 mm category at 5, 9, and 12 weeks; and within the 0.19-0.22 mm category at 21 and 30 weeks. One and 3-week-old chicks had no glomeruli within the largest (greater than or equal to 0.35 mm circumference) size categories, and 9-12-week-old birds had significantly fewer glomeruli in these categories than 21-30-week-old birds. These results demonstrate that posthatch renal maturation in domestic fowl involves the ongoing formation of new nephrons up to 12 weeks of age, with subsequent kidney growth (12-30 weeks of age) accomplished by enlargement of existing nephrons (nephron hypertrophy). The cumulative evidence indicates that nephrons destined to develop loops of Henle (mammalian-type) develop first, with shorter (reptilian-type) nephrons developing later as the kidneys enlarge.  相似文献

Under different environmental conditions, hybridization between the same species might result in different patterns of genetic admixture. Particularly, species pairs with large distribution ranges and long evolutionary history may have experienced several independent hybridization events over time in different zones of overlap. In birds, the diverse hybrid populations of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the Spanish sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis) provide a striking example. Throughout their range of sympatry, these two species do not regularly interbreed; however, a stabilized hybrid form (Passer italiae) exists on the Italian Peninsula and on several Mediterranean islands. The spatial distribution pattern on the Eurasian continent strongly contrasts the situation in North Africa, where house sparrows and Spanish sparrows occur in close vicinity of phenotypically intermediate populations across a broad mosaic hybrid zone. In this study, we investigate patterns of divergence and admixture among the two parental species, stabilized and nonstabilized hybrid populations in Italy and Algeria based on a mitochondrial marker, a sex chromosomal marker, and 12 microsatellite loci. In Algeria, despite strong spatial and temporal separation of urban early‐breeding house sparrows and hybrids and rural late‐breeding Spanish sparrows, we found strong genetic admixture of mitochondrial and nuclear markers across all study populations and phenotypes. That pattern of admixture in the North African hybrid zone is strikingly different from i) the Iberian area of sympatry where we observed only weak asymmetrical introgression of Spanish sparrow nuclear alleles into local house sparrow populations and ii) the very homogenous Italian sparrow population where the mitogenome of one parent (P. domesticus) and the Z‐chromosomal marker of the other parent (P. hispaniolensis) are fixed. The North African sparrow hybrids provide a further example of enhanced hybridization along with recent urbanization and anthropogenic land‐use changes in a mosaic landscape.  相似文献

The intraspecific mean length of medullary cones in avian kidneys is analogous to medullary thickness in the mammalian kidney. Hence, relative medullary thickness (based upon kidney volume) can be calculated for birds as was done in mammals years ago. Comparative figures are given for 26 species from nine avian orders. The organizational pattern of cortex and medulla in the bird kidney is reviewed, and a simplified diagram of this relationship is presented. With some exceptions, urine concentrating ability and relative medullary thickness are directly proportional in mammals. Contrarily, no similar trend was evident in birds when current information on water economy was compared to relative medullary thickness in various species. There are a number of factors (such as the respective functional roles of reptilian and mammalian-type nephrons, interspecific variations in ion transport, etc.) which require study before the significance of relative thickness in the avian medulla can be evaluated more thoroughly.  相似文献

Gene transfer may occur following hybridization between closely related species if hybrids are viable and able to breed with individuals of one or both of the parental species. House (Passer domesticus) and tree sparrows (P. montanus) occasionally hybridize and produce viable offspring. Previously, we concluded that male tree × house sparrow hybrids are most probably fertile based on the observation of a male F1 hybrid feeding the nestlings with a female house sparrow in two consecutive clutches. However, recent DNA analyses based on blood samples revealed that all nestlings (4) in the first clutch were sired by a neighbouring house sparrow male, whereas nestlings in the second clutch (2) were not blood sampled and most probably died before fledging. This indicates that extensive extra-pair fertilization confounded our previous conclusion, and indicates that social partnership and attending behaviour can be imprecise measures of paternity.  相似文献

How urbanization affects animal populations is in the focus of current ecological research. Existing theory of this topic suggests that the cities' more constant food supplies and lower predation pressure lead to a high proportion of weak competitors in urban populations. To evaluate this hypothesis, we tested whether competitive performance differs between differently urbanized populations of house sparrows Passer domesticus. We previously showed that wild urban sparrows are smaller and leaner than rural conspecifics, and this difference persists for months under identical captive conditions. Here we compared several aspects of their competitiveness (fighting, scrambling and searching for food) in captive mixed flocks of urban and rural birds. We found that sparrows exhibited consistent individual differences in competitiveness, but these differences were not related either to the degree of urbanization of their original habitats or to their body mass. Moreover, the variance in competitive abilities also did not differ between birds from more and less urbanized habitats. Thus our results did not support the hypothesis that urbanization shifts population structure towards an over‐abundance of weak competitors in house sparrows. We discuss possible explanations why sparrow populations may not differ in competitiveness despite the smaller body mass of urban birds.  相似文献

The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is showing population declines in many parts of Europe, with recent declines being particularly severe in urban areas. To date, relatively little is known about the species’ habitat associations within urbanized landscapes. We report here an investigation of the habitat associations of house sparrows using a survey of 1223 stratified randomly selected 500 × 500-m squares within urbanized landscapes of the UK, defined as at least 25% ‘human cover’. The densities of chirping male house sparrows and of all house sparrows were analysed separately to obtain insights into breeding habitat requirements and general habitat associations, respectively. Multi-model inference showed that residential areas (houses, flats), allotments (areas used for small-scale horticulture) and farm buildings were key predictors of house sparrow density and chirping male density. Separate analyses on landscapes of differing human cover showed similar results. Within residential areas, the increase of house sparrow density with habitat area (on a log scale) was approximately threefold greater when private gardens were present than when they were absent. The model predicted a rapid decline in house sparrow abundance when only a small area of private gardens is converted to continuous housing. Allotments and residential areas with gardens are likely to be under pressure due to increased demand for housing, specifically from the infilling of green space within urban areas. It would seem to be imperative that any action plan to protect urban house sparrow populations should include specific protection of such key habitats. Summary Perch-hopping activity patterns of pinealectomized and normal house sparrows,Passer domesticus, were examined by power spectral analysis and by analysis of daily totals. Power spectral analysis strengthened our previous conclusion that circadian periodicity is absent from the activity of pinealectomized birds kept in constant conditions. The spectral analyses also revealed that obvious ultradian rhythms are not present in sparrow perching activity. Pinealectomy had no effect on the daily activity totals.  相似文献

Immune system components differ in their functions and costs, and immune defense profiles are likely to vary among species with differing ecologies. We compared adaptive immune defenses in two closely related species that have contrasting inflammatory immune responses, the widespread and abundant house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the less abundant tree sparrow (Passer montanus). We found that the house sparrow, which we have previously shown mounts weaker inflammatory responses, exhibits stronger adaptive immune defenses, including antibody responses, natural antibody titers, and specific T-cell memory, than the tree sparrow. Conversely, tree sparrows, which mount strong inflammatory responses, also mount stronger nonspecific inflammatory T-cell responses but weaker specific adaptive responses. Prevalence of avian malaria parasite infections, which are controlled by adaptive immune defenses, was higher in the geographically restricted tree sparrow than in the ubiquitous house sparrow. Together these data describe distinct immune defense profiles between two closely related species that differ greatly in numbers and distributions. We suggest that these immunological differences could affect fitness in ways that contribute to the contrasting abundances of the two species in North American and Western Europe.  相似文献

When introduced into new regions, invading organisms leave many native pathogens behind and also encounter evolutionarily novel disease threats. In the presence of predominantly novel pathogens that have not co-evolved to avoid inducing a strong host immune response, costly and potentially dangerous defenses such as the systemic inflammatory response could become more harmful than protective to the host. We therefore hypothesized that introduced populations exhibiting dampened inflammatory responses will tend to be more invasive. To provide initial data to assess this hypothesis, we measured metabolic, locomotor, and reproductive responses to inflammatory challenges in North American populations of the highly invasive house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and its less-invasive relative, the tree sparrow (Passer montanus). In the house sparrow, there was no effect of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) challenge on metabolic rate, and there were no detectable differences in locomotor activity between lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-injected birds and saline-injected controls. In contrast, tree sparrows injected with PHA had metabolic rates 20–25% lower than controls, and LPS injection resulted in a 35% drop in locomotor activity. In a common garden captive breeding experiment, there was no effect of killed-bacteria injections on reproduction in the house sparrow, while tree sparrows challenged with bacteria decreased egg production by 40% compared to saline-injected controls. These results provide some of the first data correlating variation in immune defenses with invasion success in introduced-vertebrate populations.  相似文献

In this study, assortative mating for different morphological traits was studied in a captive population of house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Males were larger than females. Assortative mating was found for tail length, wing length and general body size. Males with larger badge size mated with females with longer tails. The strongest assortative mating occurred for tail length (r=0.77), and this assortative mating remained significant after controlling for wing length, mass and tarsus length, suggesting that it was not an artefact of assortative mating for body size. The possibility of sexual selection for tail length in the house sparrow is discussed.  相似文献

Conspecific brood parasitism (CP) is a facultative breeding tactic whereby females lay their eggs in the nests of conspecifics. In some species, potential hosts have evolved the ability to identify and reject foreign eggs from their nest. Previous studies suggest that the ubiquitous house sparrow Passer domesticus in Spain and South Africa employs both CP and egg rejection, while a population in China does not. Given the species’ invasive range expansions, the house sparrow represents a potentially excellent global model system for parasitic egg rejection across variable ecological conditions. We examined the responses of house sparrows to experimental parasitism at three geographically distinct locations (in Israel, North America, and New Zealand) to provide a robust test of how general the findings of the previous studies are. In all three geographic regions egg rejection rates were negligible and not statistically different from background rates of disappearance of control eggs, suggesting that the house sparrow is not a suitable model species for egg rejection experiments on a global scale.  相似文献

Summary Fluoxetine, a specific serotonergic reuptake blocker and indirect agonist, and 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine, a serotonergic neurotoxin, affect the free-running locomotor rhythms of house sparrows,Passer domesticus. Both compounds caused phase-shifts in the circadian system that times locomotor activity of the birds. The magnitude and direction of the phase-shifts were dependent on the circadian phase of the drug administration, suggesting that serotonergic activity can modulate the circadian pacemaker of the house sparrow.Abbreviations 5HT serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptamine - 5,6-DHT 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine - DMI desmethylimipramine - SCN suprachiasmatic nuclei - CT circadian time - CAP compound action potential This paper is dedicated to Professor Colin S. In isolated, nonperfused chicken proximal tubules from both loopless reptilian-type and long-looped mammalian-type nephrons, resting intracellular pH (pHi), measured with pH-sensitive fluorescent dye 2',7'-bis(2-carboxyethyl)-5,6-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF), was approximately 7.1 under control HCO3- conditions [20 mM N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N'-2-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES)/5 mM HCO3(-)-buffered medium with pH 7.4 at 37 degrees C] and was reduced to approximately 6.8 in response to NH4Cl pulse. The rate of recovery of pHi (dpHi/dt) from this level to the resting level in proximal tubules from both nephron types was (1) significantly reduced by the removal of Na+ or both Na+ and Cl- from the bath, and (2) unaffected by the removal of Cl- from the bath or the presence of a high K+ concentration or Ba2+ in the bath. In proximal tubules from long-looped mammalian-type, but not loopless reptilian-type, nephrons, dpHi/dt was significantly reduced by the addition of either 5-(N-ethyl-N-isopropyl) amiloride (EIPA) or 4,4'-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2'disulfonate (DIDS) to the bath. These data suggest that a Na+/H+ exchanger and most likely a Na(+)-dependent Cl-/HCO3- exchanger are involved in basolateral regulation of pHi in mammalian-type nephrons whereas none of the commonly identified basolateral acid-base transporters appear to be involved in regulation of pHi in reptilian-type nephrons.  相似文献

Two series of aviary experiments with white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) are reported. The first series attempts to mimic foraging choices between microhabitats. The second series examines foraging choices made within a single artificial patch, a design intended to resemble dietary selection. In all experiments subjects chose between a constant food reward and a variable reward, the mean of which equalled the constant reward. Each experiment allowed the bird to feed at an overall rate greater than that minimally required for daily energy balance. In both series of experiments, the birds usually preferred the constant reward. Results of the first series do not differ significantly from previously reported preferences of dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), birds weighing 10 g less than the white-crowned sparrows.  相似文献

Summary The impact of endophytic fungus-infected seeds on seed predators is poorly understood. In this multiple trophic level investigation, seed preference experiments were conducted to determine whether five species of passerines (dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis; American tree sparrows, Spizella arborea; song sparrows, Melospiza melodia; chipping sparrows, Spizella pusilla; and house sparrows, Passer domesticus) recognize and preferentially consume noninfected (NI) over infected (I) seeds of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). We predicted that the birds would refrain from eating I seeds because those seeds contain high concentrations of fungal alkaloids. When given a choice of NI fescue seeds and control seeds (millet), all bird species showed a significant preference for millet. However, individuals of all species consumed some NI seeds. When given a choice of NI and I fescue seeds, all species except the chippig sparrow ate significatly more NI than I fescue seed and the chipping sparrow showed the same trend. Thus, birds were able to distinguish between the two seed types and preferred NI seeds in choice tests. Additional experiments investigated weight changes in dark-eyed juncos fed diets containing different proportions of millet, NI, and I fescue seed. Significant differences in weight loss were observed for the various diets. Juncos showed greater weight loss when the proportion of fescue seed, especially the proportion of I seed, in their diet was greater. The potential significance of the finding that abundant grass seeds are made unavailable to predators by fungal infection is discussed in relation to foraging and competition in avian communities.  相似文献

Invasive species often display different patterns of parasite burden and virulence compared to their native counterparts. These differences may be the result of variability in host-parasite co-evolutionary relationships, the occurrence of novel host-parasite encounters, or possibly innate differences in physiological responses to infection between invasive and native hosts. Here we examine the adaptive, humoral immune responses of a resistant, native bird and a susceptible, invasive bird to an arbovirus (Buggy Creek virus; Togaviridae: Alphavirus) and its ectoparasitic arthropod vector (the swallow bug; Oeciacus vicarius). Swallow bugs parasitize the native, colonially nesting cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and the introduced house sparrow (Passer domesticus) that occupies nests in cliff swallow colonies. We measured levels of BCRV-specific and swallow bug-specific IgY levels before nesting (prior to swallow bug exposure) and after nesting (after swallow bug exposure) in house sparrows and cliff swallows in western Nebraska. Levels of BCRV-specific IgY increased significantly following nesting in the house sparrow but not in the cliff swallow. Additionally, house sparrows displayed consistently higher levels of swallow bug-specific antibodies both before and after nesting compared to cliff swallows. The higher levels of BCRV and swallow bug specific antibodies detected in house sparrows may be reflective of significant differences in both antiviral and anti-ectoparasite immune responses that exist between these two avian species. To our knowledge, this is the first study to compare the macro- and microparasite-specific immune responses of an invasive and a native avian host exposed to the same parasites.  相似文献
