1. Three sibling species of mosquitoes of the Anopheles gambiae complex are found in the Senegal River Basin: An. melas Theobald, An. gambiae Giles and An. arabiensis Patton. 2. An. melas is restricted to the river delta and environs where saltwater breeding places are present. 3. An. gambiae and An. arabiensis are sympatric in the study area; An. arabiensis predominates in coastal zones where it breeds also during the dry season; An. gambiae predominates in inland areas where breeding is mostly restricted to the rainy season (July-September). 4. An. arabiensis is chromosomally polymorphic all over the study area, with much variation of inversion frequencies, particularly for the 2Ra arrangement. 5. Three species of the Anopheles gambiae complex were identified in Guinea Bissau (West Africa) by chromosomal analysis. They were An. melas, An. arabiensis and An. gambiae s.s. An melas was observed in coastal and insular zones of the study area as well as in areas where the rivers are tidal and brackish and bordered by mangroves. For this reason, the species occurs also in inland riverine localities such as Farim and Bissorà. An. arabiensis apparently occurs only in low numbers in a very limited inland area during the dry season. An gambiae s.s. was observed nearly everywhere in the study area. In the samples of An. melas three inversion polymorphisms occurred: one on the chromosomal arm 2R (2Rn) and two on the arm 3R (3Rc and 3Re). It was observed that the frequencies of the inverted arrangements 2Rn and 3Re were significantly higher in the islands as compared to the continental sampling localities. The An. arabiensis sample was characterized by the presence of three inversion polymorphisms: 2Ra, 2Rb and 3Ra. A very high degree of polymorphism was shown by the An. gambiae s.s. samples. Four inversion polymorphisms were observed (three on chromosomal arm 2R and one on arm 2L) with very different frequencies of the alternative arrangements in different zones of the study area. From these data it seemed possible to split the species into three populations, each of them apparently linked with a peculiar ecological situation. The first population, characterized by high frequencies of 2Rd arrangement, is present on the coastal zones and in the islands; the second one is present in the northern inland areas particularly during the dry season and it is characterized by high frequencies of 2Rb and 2La arrangements. The third population is present only in the inland zones and it is characterized by high frequencies of 2Rjb, 2Rjd and 2Rjbd arrangements.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to identify the major larval habitats of the Anopheles gambiae (Giles) complex in rural Gambia. Mosquito larvae and pupae were sampled along transects and in specific habitats in the central region of the country during the rainy seasons of 1996 and 1997. The sampling showed that the major breeding sites were located on the flooded alluvial soils bordering the river. The largest numbers of larvae were found during September, one month after the peak rains. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of specimens showed that Anopheles melas (Theobald) was the dominant species in the flooded areas (81.5%), followed by A. gambiae sensu stricto (Giles) (18.0%) and A. arabiensis (Patton) (0.5%). By sampling in specific habitats it was evident that A. arabiensis was mainly breeding in rain-fed rice fields along the edge of the alluvial soils. Anopheles melas and A. gambiae s.s. often coexisted but whereas A. melas were found in water with a salinity of up to 72% sea water (25.2 g NaCl l(-1)), A. gambiae s.s. only occurred in water with up to 30% sea water (10.5 g NaCl l(-1)). Anopheles melas larvae were found in association with plant communities dominated by sedges and grasses (Eleocharis sp., Paspalum sp., Sporobolus sp.) and sea-purslane Sesuvium portulacastrum (L.) and the presence of cattle hoof prints, whereas A. gambiae s.s. larvae mainly occurred in association with Paspalum sp. and Eleocharis sp. The study showed that even during the peak rainy season, breeding of the A. gambiae complex is almost entirely restricted to the extensive alluvial areas along the river.  相似文献

The importance of rainfall for the development of Aedes vexans arabiensis populations, one of the potential vectors of Rift Valley Fever in West Africa, was demonstrated in a two-year follow-up study conducted in the Ferlo region of Senegal. In 2003, the rainy season began with heavy rains and, as a result, temporary ponds, the breeding places for mosquitoes, were flooded at their maximum level immediately. In such conditions, Aedes vexans arabiensis populations are abundant at the very beginning of the season, when the majority of eggs in quiescence are flooded. Females, hatching from eggs laid the year before, quickly lay eggs on the pond's wet soil, which will undergo dormancy as the water level goes down. Rainless periods longer than seven days, the time needed for embryogenesis, followed by significant rainfall, will result in the hatching of very large numbers of new eggs. Thus, several generations of adults may exist during the same rainy season. Because of potential vertical transmission of Rift Valley Fever virus in Aedes species, viral transmission and disease risk can appear as early as the beginning of the rainy season and if late rains occur, at the end of the season. This dynamic maximizes the virus' chance to persist from one year to another, thus facilitating endemisation of Rift Valley Fever in areas where Aedes vexans arabiensis exists.  相似文献

Growth in length, condition, and gonads of a food fish, Dormitator latifrons , were studied in the Chone River basin, Ecuador, in 1981. The river was bordered by floodplains in the upstream freshwater zone, and by mangrove swamps and shrimp farms in the downstream estuarine zone. The climate was marked by wet (January to April) and dry (May to December) seasons. During the dry season, an earth dam in the river prevented movement of water and fish between upstream and downstream zones. At the end of the dry season, most of the upstream floodplains were dry, and the main fish refuges were in downstream areas in deep pools in the river upstream. During the floods, fish migrated from downstream areas towards upstream floodplains. Growth rates and condition increased when water levels were high or salinity was low and decreased when water levels were low or salinity was high. Seasonal changes in gonads and abundance of juveniles indicated that reproduction occurred during the floods, but there was some reproduction in the dry season. Reproduction occurred in upstream and downstream zones and appeared to be stimulated by a complex of factors, including water levels, currents and salinity. The yield in flood plain sites was estimated as c. 115 kg ha−1 in 1981.  相似文献

Abstract. The name Anopheles bwambae is proposed for the taxon previously called species D of the An.gambiae complex. This sibling species is known only from the vicinity of Buranga hot springs in Bwamba County, Toro District, Uganda, where it breeds in brackish water from geothermal springs together with other halophilic mosquitoes (Ae.albocephalus, Ae.natwnius, Cx.tenagius). An.bwambae adults inhabit the Semliki Forest, where the natural hosts are unknown, but they also enter houses in nearby villages and bite human beings avidly. Plasmodium sporozoites and developing larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti were found in An.bwambae females, so it is assumed that this species of vector contributes locally to transmission of human malaria and filariasis (together with An.funestus, An.gambiae and An.arabiensis). The specific diagnosis of An.bwambae depends upon (i) the presence of fixed inversion 3La and polymorphic inversions 2R1 and 3Rb of the karyotype, as interpreted from ovarian polytene chromosomes, (ii) a fast fixed allozyme of super-oxide dismutase (Sod-105), (iii) female palpi with broader pale apical band and narrower dark sub-apical band than for other sibling species. Cytotaxonomically An.bwambae has the same X-chromosome banding pattern as An.quadriannulatus and An.melas; the latter also has autosomal inversion 3La and therefore appears to be the sister-species of An.bwambae. An identification key is given to the six named sibling species of the An.gambiae complex.  相似文献

Data from polytene chromosome studies on the Anopheles gambiae complex in Mali were reviewed. The banding pattern was successfully scored in 17,705 specimens from 76 sampling sites representing the main ecological strata of the country. Two members of the complex, namely An. arabiensis and An. gambiae, were found widespread and frequently sympatric, with the latter prevalent in most localities. Population genetic analysis of the inversion polymorphisms indicated the existence of panmictic conditions for An. arabiensis only, whereas the parallel study of An. gambiae supported its splitting into at least three reproductive units, characterized by different 2R chromosome arrangements, designated Bamako, Mopti and Savanna. The chromosomal evidence was consistent with the hypothesis of complete reproductive isolation between Bamako and Mopti. Partial isolation between these two taxa and Savanna was suggested by the scoring of hypothetical hybrid 2R heterokaryotypes in various samples, but the actual hybrid origin of these specimens was not confirmed. Different patterns of geographical and seasonal distribution were shown as follows. An. arabiensis prevails in arid savannas (Sahel and Northern Sudan savanna) out of the flooded or irrigated zones; it is able to withstand the most arid conditions of Saharan localities and its breeding might extend throughout the dry season. An. gambiae Savanna and Bamako prevail in relatively humid savannas (Southern Sudan savanna) and their breeding generally occurs only during the rainy season. The Savanna taxon was almost absent in flooded or irrigated zones and in riverine localities; the Bamako taxon is distributed along the upper river Niger and its tributaries. An. gambiae Mopti extends its range in all ecological zones present in Mali including the Sahel and predesertic areas, showing high relative frequencies up to absolute dominance in flooded or irrigated areas; its breeding is highly successful also during the dry season. Rainfall at the sampling sites was found to correlate positively with the frequency of Savanna and negatively with the frequency of Mopti. The remarkable ecological flexibility of the latter was found associated with wide seasonal and geographical variations in its 2R inversion polymorphism bc/u. Higher frequencies of the bc arrangement were recorded both in the Southern localities during the dry season and in the Northern more arid localities during the rainy season. The absence or scarcity of An. arabiensis and An. gambiae Savanna in most flooded or irrigated zones suggests their competitive exclusion by An. gambiae Mopti.  相似文献

A longitudinal entomological malaria survey was carried out in five zones of the town of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and in three neighbouring villages. The main vector is Anopheles gambiae s.l. with An. funestus having a role in some localities during the dry season. Pyrethrum spray catches were carried out once or twice per month to determine variations in vector density. Inoculation rates were estimated from the number of blood-fed vectors per man and from the sporozoite rates. Larval sampling was routinely carried out all over the urban area in order to map the larval breeding sites. Widely different degrees of malaria transmission were documented in the urban area mainly related to the spatial and temporal distribution of An. gambiae larval breeding sites. Higher inoculation rates, depending both on higher vector densities and sporozoite rates, were documented in the villages.  相似文献

In villages near Sanaga river, in the forest zone of south Cameroon, Anopheles nili Theobald is the main species of mosquito regularly found biting man inside houses. Its densities are related to the flow level of the river. It is also the main malaria vector in terms of intensity and seasonal duration of transmission. The yearly malaria inoculation rate due to An. nili alone is 104 infective bites/man, varying between 3 infective bites/man in October and 20 in March. Anopheles gambiae Giles is a less important vector in the area but reached its peak in the dry season, when the Sanaga river is at its lowest level. These observations underline the influence of local ecology on malaria transmission and the need for entomological studies in each situation.  相似文献

Malaria control has been directed towards regional actions where more detailed knowledge of local determinants of transmission is of primary importance. This is a short report on range distribution and biting indices for Anopheles darlingi and An. albitarsis during the dry and rainy season that follows river level variation in a savanna/alluvial forest malaria system area in the Northern Amazon Basin. Distribution range and adult biting indices were at their highest during the rainy season for both An. darlingi and An. albitarsis. During the rainy season the neighboring alluvial forest was extensively flooded. This coincided with highest rates in malaria transmission with case clustering near the river. As the river receded, anopheline distribution range and density decreased. This decrease in distribution and density corresponded to a malaria decrease in the near area. An exponential regression function was derived to permit estimations of An. darlingi distribution over specified distances. Anopheline spatio-temporal variations lead to uneven malaria case distribution and are of important implications for control strategies.  相似文献

Chromosome studies on samples of the Anopheles gambiae complex were carried out in a village of the rice-growing area of the Rusizi Valley (Burundi). A large predominance of An. arabiensis was observed throughout the year. Anopheles gambiae was also present but represented about 4% only of the indoor resting An. gambiae s.l. The finding of human blood-fed specimens in animal shelters suggests partial exophily. Abdominal appearance observations indicated a gonotrophic dissociation during the dry season. Both An. arabiensis and An. gambiae showed a low degree of inversion polymorphism, in agreement with the general picture shown in East Africa. The most frequent karyotypes are typical of wet savannas.  相似文献

ovement of mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex (mixed wild populations of An.arabiensis, An.gambiae and An.melas ) between three neighbouring rural villages in The Gambia was investigated by mark-release-recapture. A total of 12,872 mosquitoes were collected in bednets, marked with a magenta fluorescent powder and released over a 15-day period in one of the villages. A further 15,507 mosquitoes were collected in exit traps, marked with a yellow powder and released over the same period. Mosquitoes were captured daily in all three villages using pyrethrum spray catches, as well as bednet and exit trap catches. The catching period extended for 6 days after the last day of release.
Of the mosquitoes released, 372 (1.3%) were recaptured 2–21 days later. Of these recaptures, 272 were caught in the release village, and 98 were caught in other villages situated 1–1.4 km away. The 'movement index' between villages was calculated as 17.2% (12.2–22.4% confidence limits) for mosquitoes released after feeding and 20.1% (14.7–25.3%) for those released unfed.
These results suggest that movement of mosquitoes between neighbouring villages in The Gambia seriously affects the entomological evaluation of pyrethroid-impregnated bednet programmes in areas where treated and untreated villages are interspersed.  相似文献

Adult females of Anopheles gambiae s.1. were collected by pyrethrum spray catch in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso, formerly Upper Volta) and in four neighbouring villages. The collections have been carried out mostly during the 1984 rainy season. Monthly collections in some sampling sites allowed a preliminary longitudinal study. By analysis of nurse cell polytene chromosomes in adult females, An. gambiae s.str. and An. arabiensis were identified in the study area. Both species showed polymorphisms for various paracentric inversions. In all samples of An. arabiensis the frequencies of the alternative karyotypes were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting panmictic conditions. Conversely, An. gambiae s.str. showed a different situation, since most of its samples had strong deficiency of certain expected heterokaryotypes. This same phenomenon was already observed in Mali, leading to the splitting of gambiae s.str. into different chromosomal forms, partially or totally reproductively isolated from each other. Each chromosomal form is characterized by different chromosomal polymorphisms. Two of these forms, Mopti and Savanna, were detected in the study area. Mopti chromosomal form is apparently associated with the presence of permanent waters (i.e. the "barrages" north of the town), while Savanna is usually found in situations where breeding places are mainly dependent from rain (e.g. in villages far from "barrages" or at the town's center).  相似文献

A longitudinal entomological study was carried out from 1999 to 2001 in Lena, a humid savannah village in the western region of Burkina Faso in order to establish malaria vector bionomics and the dynamics of malaria transmission. In the first year, malaria transmission was mainly due to An. gambiae s.s., but during the two later years was due to An. funestus, which were observed in high frequency towards the end of the rainy season. PCR identification of samples of An. gambiae s.1. showed 93% to be An. gambiae s.s. and 7% An. arabiensis. An. funestus constituting more than 60% of the vectors were identified in PCR as An. funestus s.s. The persistence of intense vectorial activity in this village was probably due to the road building in a swampy area creating a semi-permanent swamp that provided large sites for larval mosquitoes. These swampy sites seemed to be more favorable for An. funestus than for An. gambiae s.s. Thus, land development must be monitored and subjected to planning to minimize vector proliferation. Such a system of planning could lead to the restriction or even elimination of the swamp that is the source of larvae developing in the heart of the village.  相似文献

1. Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. funestus Giles were identified as vectors of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in the Mwea-Tebere irrigation scheme, Kenya. An. arabiensis was the only member of the An. gambiae complex identified from chromosome characteristics. Other Anopheles species found included An. pharoensis Theobald, An. rufipes Gough and An. coustani Laveran. Survival rates per gonotrophic cycle for An. arabiensis averaged 0.37 during the short rains (October-November), 0.49 during the dry season (February) and 0.78 during the long rains (May-June). Vectorial capacities were correspondingly low due to low survival rates and a high degree of zoophily. The average duration of infective life for P. falciparum was 0.2 days for both An. arabiensis and An. funestus. In contrast, entomological inoculation rates were comparatively high: 6-8 infective bites/man/month. An. pharoensis averaged 110 bites/man/night during the short rains; 1/999 (0.1%) was positive by ELISA for P. falciparum circumsporozoite antigen, but the ELISA evidence is not conclusive for vector incrimination. In correspondence with clinical observations, the transmission of P. malariae and P. ovale is unlikely due to the low vector survival rates. The observed anomaly between low vectorial capacities and high entomological inoculation rates demonstrates the importance of accurately estimating vector sporozoite rates to monitor unstable malaria transmission in irrigated areas.  相似文献

The distribution and variation of Asanada spp. in Nigeria is described. Three forms are recognized and their relationship with other African populations of Asanada is discussed. An account of the biology of A. sokotrana in Nigeria is given. During the rainy season the species is characteristically found in deserted mounds of Trinervetermes spp. but disappears from this habitat in the dry season, presumably retreating into the soil. Egg-laying and brooding take place at the latter end of the dry season and the young appear at the beginning of the rains. Males live for only one year but some females live for longer than this. The anopheline vectors and malaria transmission were investigated in the Middle West of Madagascar, in the village of Ambohimena (at the altitude of 940 meters) during two years (August 1996 to July 1998). This village is located outside the vector control area, where yearly DDT house spraying campaigns have been conducted between 1993 and 1998. Collection of mosquitoes was mainly based on all night man billing collections (650 man-nights), pyrethrum spray catches (224 bedrooms) and direct collections in outdoor resting places (140 toilets, 61 pigsties, 33 holes, 19 sheds, 79 sisal hedges, 70 cart shelters). Blood fed anophelines allowed analysis of the origin of blood with an ELISA method. Presence of circum-sporozoite protein was assessed with another ELISA method. The total number of collected anophelines was 14,280. Two malaria vectors were identified: Anopheles funestus Giles, 1900 and An. arabiensis Patton, 1902. An. funestus was the most abundant mosquito, especially during the hot rainy season. Two peaks of abundance were observed (in December and April). Endophagic rate (for mosquitoes aggressive for man) of 35.3%, an endophilic rate (for resting mosquitoes) of 78.0% and an anthropophilic rate (for indoor resting mosquitoes) of 64.0% were calculated. The average parity rate was relatively low (61.2%). The Plasmodium falciparum immunological sporozoite rate was 0.20%. An. funestus presented a higher vectorial capacity during the first round of rice cultivation (January) than during the second round (April-May). An. arabiensis was mostly abundant in December and January at the beginning of the rainy season. This species was exophagic (endophagic rate = 27.5%) and zoophilic (anthropophilic rate = 7.8%). The sporozoitic index was determined as zero (number of examined mosquitoes = 871). In this village, An. arabiensis presented only marginal importance for malaria transmission. Malaria transmission occurred from December to April. Annual entomological inoculation rate, only due to An. funestus, was 8.96 during the first year, and 3.17 during the second year. In this area where transmission is moderately stable, we suggest an extension of vector imagocidal control activities up to the western fringes of the Highlands.  相似文献

Abstract. Differential responses of the mosquitoes Anopheles arabiensis and An. gambiae sensu stricto to house-spraying with DDT or lambda-cyhalothrin were evaluated in relation to chromosomal inversion polymorphism, feeding and resting behaviour of these malaria vectors in Tanzania. Blood-fed mosquitoes from pit traps outdoors, exit traps on windows and indoor-resting catches were identified cytogenetically and the chromosomal inversion frequencies compared between samples and species. Their outdoor-resting behaviour was assessed by a mark–release–recapture experiment and by determining the proportion of freshly blood-fed individuals in exit traps. The source of bloodmeals was analysed by an ELISA method. Endophagic females of An. arabiensis were more likely than those of An. gambiae to exit from a house on the night of blood-feeding. Only in one out of three villages was there evidence that chromosomally distinct individuals within a species had different preferences for resting sites. There were indications, but not conclusive evidence, that mosquitoes caught indoors or outdoors had a tendency to return to the same type of resting site. In villages sprayed with either insecticide, the mean age of the vector populations was greatly reduced, compared with those in the unsprayed villages. An. arabiensis females exited from DDT sprayed houses after blood-feeding, whereas with lambda-cyhalothrin those exiting were mostly unfed and there was a decline in the human blood index. The excitorepellency of DDT was perceived as a disadvantage, whereas lambda-cyhalothrin apparently had more impact on malaria transmission by An. arabiensis.  相似文献

Arthropods were collected by insecticidal tree fogging on the understorey tree species Rinorea beniensis Engler (Violaceae) in Budongo Forest, a seasonal rain forest in Uganda. Eight trees were fogged in adjacent plots of primary, selectively logged and swamp forest during the wet season and again in the dry season. In all forest types, Psocoptera, parasitoid Hymenoptera, and especially Formicidae and Auchenorrhyncha were more abundant during the dry season, while Ensifera, Heteroptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Coleoptera were more abundant during the wet season. Seasonal change in arthropod composition was very low in the swamp forest located near a stream, where permanent water supply is crucial for the development of the distinct swamp vegetation, with comparatively constant microclimatic conditions all over the year. Seasonal change increased in the primary forest, and shows most significant changes of athropod abundance between dry and wet season in the selectively logged forest which also had the highest heterogeneity in forest structures. Especially small and soft bodied arthropods probably accumulate along a humidity gradient in the dense canopies of Rinorea during the dry season, when the forest floor outside the swamp forest is dry. This effect, which is also strongest in the selectively logged forest, leads to a much higher density of canopy dwelling arthropods during the dry season.  相似文献

Parity and age composition for Anopheles darlingi and Anopheles albitarsis in the northern Amazon Basin, Brazil, were investigated. Anopheline ovaries and ovarioles were examined in order to determine whether hourly and seasonal parity status for the vectors An. albitarsis and An. darlingi would vary in two different landscapes (forest and savanna/forest) where malaria is endemic in the northern Amazon Basin. A total of 1,199 anophelines (535 An. darlingi and 664 An. albitarsis) was dissected for parity status, ovariole dilatations, and follicular stages. The total number of nulliparous and parous females for both species varied by time of collection, locality, and season. During the rainy season for the first two h of collection, more nulliparous An. albitarsis and An. darlingi females were collected in the first hour (18:00-19:00), but during the second hour (19:00-20:00) more parous females of both species were captured. During the dry season in Copaíbas, more parous females of An. albitarsis were observed in the first hour while more nulliparous females were observed in the second hour. Nulliparous and parous females of both species for both hours were not significantly different at Road 19 in the dry season. This location was characterized by a forest malaria pattern of transmission with higher numbers of parous females and population stability in the dry season. In Copaíbas, the density and parity of An. darlingi increased during the rainy season, and it could be classified as an alluvial malaria pattern of transmission. For Copaíbas, control measures would be more successful if adopted at the transition from dry to rainy season. Further investigation on longitudinal spatio-temporal change in longevity and survival rates would help us to clarify differences in vector competence for An. darlingi and An. albitarsis and add to the understanding of differences regarding prevailing landscapes in malaria epidemiology in the northern Amazon Basin.  相似文献
