The crayfish Orconectes eupunctus, a species of special concern, appears to have been displaced from part of its former range in the Spring River drainage of Arkansas and Missouri by the invasive crayfish O. neglectus chaenodactylus. We conducted preliminary field experiments to determine whether Orconectes eupunctus were displaced from their former range and whether interspecific competition with O. neglectus chaenodactylus was responsible for the displacement. To determine whether Orconectes eupunctus were displaced from their former range by negative biotic interactions with other species we placed single adult male O. eupunctus in cages at two sites: an upstream site where O. eupunctus was formerly abundant and a downstream site where it is currently abundant. Orconectes neglectus chaenodactylus were additionally paired alongside O. eupunctus at the upstream site. We also conducted a field competition experiment with treatments consisting of (1) 3 O. eupunctus, (2) 6 O. eupunctus, and (3) 3 O. eupunctus and 3 O. neglectus chaenodactylus at a site where both species occur. In the first experiment, O. eupunctus gained significantly more weight at the downstream site than the upstream site during 2003, but not during 2002. At the upstream site, O. eupunctus showed significantly greater growth rates than O. neglectus chaenodactylus during 2002, but not during 2003. In the competition experiment, O. neglectus chaenodactylus did not significantly reduce the growth or survival of O. eupunctus. These results suggest that O. eupunctus have been displaced from their former range by biotic interactions, but interspecific competition between adult male O. eupunctus and O. neglectus chaenodactylus does not appear to be the mechanism responsible for this displacement. Further study is needed to investigate the disappearance of O. eupunctus. 相似文献

Aquatic organisms may use different mechanisms to locate an odour source, including odour-gated rheotaxis and chemotaxis. However, the effects of spatial and temporal information contained within odour signals in guiding orientation are under debate. In nature, turbulence and plume meandering give rise to signal intermittency, which organisms must overcome to locate an odour source successfully. In this study, crayfish were presented with odour plumes formed by a continuously released jet or a pulsed jet ranging from 0.5 to 3 Hz. Crayfish oriented significantly differently in pulsed odour plumes differed significantly from than in a continuously released jet plume. In a continuous odour plumes, crayfish walked faster, had more accurate heading and turning angles, and stopped less often. The results suggest that crayfish are able to orient in a pulsed odour plumes, but that the spatial and temporal complexity of a continuous released odour plume allowed them to be more successful to find the odour source. 相似文献

Evidence of a circadian clock mechanism was found in the cave crayfish Procambarus cavernicola. Analysis of motor activity recorded in this species during 12 consecutive days in either free running (constant darkness, DD or constant light, LL) or entrainment conditions (12 h of light alternated with 12 h of darkness, 12 : 12 LD) showed a well recognized circadian rhythm. In this rhythm however, the absence of synchronization by periodical external signals was notorious. The comparison between the motor circadian rhythm in cave crayfish and epigeous crayfish Procambarus clarkii (these last studied during juvenile and adult stages), evidenced strong similitude between the motor circadian rhythm of cave crayfish and juvenile epigeous crayfish. 相似文献

The invasive crayfish Procambarus clarkii is highly dispersed within lentic waters in northern and central Italy. It is a polytrophic predator, exerting a strong influence
on animal communities, including amphibians, fish, gastropods, and insect larvae. The indigenous species Austropotamobius italicus, inhabiting lotic waters, behaves as a generalist – but not opportunistic – species. The object of this study was to compare
the predatory pressure exercised by the two species on potential prey, i.e., anuran tadpoles, urodelan larvae, fish fry, larvae
of insects, and gastropods. Three main conclusions were drawn: (1) both species are skilled predators, adopting a sit-and-wait
strategy, (2) the two crayfish seemed to form a `search image' of familiar prey, as the result of either visual or chemical
perceptual changes, and (3) at least in the laboratory, P. clarkii readily switched to naive prey for it (tadpoles of Rana italica and larvae of Limnephilidae), unlike the less opportunistic A. italicus. These results furnish suggestions on the trophic preferences of the two crayfish species and provide a partial understanding
of the effects that the invasive species have on the community dynamics.

The introduced crayfish, Orconectes virilis (Cambarinae; Hagen 1870), has become a serious invasive species in Arizona (USA), altering stream ecosystems and contributing to the decline of native species. But because it is native to the eastern US, and related crayfish including endangered species inhabit nearby states, introduction of a biological control agent presents a unique challenge. This represents a feasibility study, in which we explored bacteria, nematodes, and a virus as potential biological control agents for O. virilis while avoiding harm to native species. White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) from shrimp was found to be highly pathogenic and readily passed by cannibalistic behavior but not by water transmission. Potential activity of WSSV against representative non-target arthropods that may be found in the same ecosystems was also explored. 相似文献

The establishment and reinforcement of dominance status is thought to provide an individual with increased access to preferred resources, such as food, mates, and shelter. Resources within an environment vary based on their availability, abundance, and specific characteristics of the resource. Animals can exhibit preferences for resources by increasing the intensity of competition for access to the resource. We investigated the role that dominance has in acquiring and controlling resources within crayfish populations. Populations of 5 size‐matched crayfish were allowed to establish a social hierarchy in the presence of shelters of differing structure in 10 different trials. Crayfish agonistic interactions and the use and control of shelters were quantified from 96 h continuous video recordings. Shelter preference was defined by crayfish use of specific shelter types that were occupied for longer durations. Analysis of the social hierarchy demonstrated that crayfish have a linearity hierarchy in this context. In addition, it is clear that dominance rank had a significant impact on shelter use, shelter acquisition, and shelter eviction. Crayfish with lower average dominance ranks selected specific shelter types (smaller and fewer openings). Dominant crayfish used big shelters and were less likely to be evicted from shelters. These results demonstrate that dominance in crayfish serves a role in the acquisition of resources and is also important for the control of those resources. 相似文献

Because mating entails both costs and potential benefits to both sexes, males and females should be under selection to make optimal choices from among available potential mates. For example, in some cases, individuals may benefit by using information on potential mates' previous sexual histories to make mate choices. In such cases, the form and direction of these benefits may vary both between the sexes and based on the sexual history of the choosing individuals themselves. We investigated the effects of recent previous sexual history on the mate choice and mating behavior of both males and females of the crayfish Orconectes limosus. In one experiment, we found that opposite‐sex dyads comprising crayfish that had both mated 7–8 d previously with other conspecifics were significantly less likely to mate than dyads in which at least one crayfish was unmated. In a second experiment, we found that, when presented with a choice of tethered (but free to move) opposite‐sex conspecifics, only virgin females discriminated between males based on sexual history, showing a preference for virgin males over recently mated males. Mated females, mated males, and virgin males showed no preferences based on the sexual histories of potential mates. We discuss the implications of these inferences in the context of what was previously known about mating behavior and potential sperm limitation in crustaceans and other taxa. 相似文献

This laboratory study examined the effects of the specific serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine on growth following molting and on a range of behaviors in the crayfish Orconectes rusticus. For growth experiments, male Form I and Form II crayfish were weighed and measured and placed individually in water containing 0–500 μg/L of fluoxetine. They were held in fluoxetine or control water until they molted and were reweighed two weeks post-molt. In behavior experiments, juvenile and adult animals were held individually in 0, 2, 200, or 500 μg/L of fluoxetine for 10 days and tested in an open field arena to assess locomotion, thigmotaxis, sheltering, and habituation to a novel environment. Under our laboratory conditions, crayfish exposed to fluoxetine at 500 μg/L showed significantly enhanced growth: post-molt Form I animals had greater body weight and post-molt Form II animals had greater carapace length, relative to controls. In open field tests, juvenile crayfish exposed to 2 and 500 μg/L fluoxetine displayed significantly reduced locomotion compared to controls. The results indicate that crayfish growth and locomotion can be manipulated by short-term exposure to ambient fluoxetine, suggesting that this means of exposure may offer a useful and noninvasive way to examine drug effects in freely moving animals. However, effects were only observed at concentrations well above fluoxetine levels currently reported in the environment. This suggests that O. rusticus may be relatively resistant to this form of pharmaceutical pollution but whether effects would occur following long-term exposure to lower concentrations is unknown. 相似文献

The conflict between mating and foraging is one of the many tradeoffs associated with reproduction. The relative attraction to sex pheromone and food stimuli by male virile crayfish (Orconectes virilis) were tested using two experiments. In the first experiment, the responses by males to pheromone and food stimuli alone were assessed. In the second experiment, males were exposed to both pheromone and food stimuli in a choice maze. To determine the effects of feeding motivation, the males in the choice experiment were fed either one day or seven days prior to observation. Male crayfish exhibited similar responses to the pheromone and food stimuli individually. Males exhibited a preference for the pheromone stimulus over the food stimulus in the choice trials, and that preference that was not influenced by starvation. 相似文献

Contest outcomes are usually determined by differences in resource‐holding potential, the social histories of the combatants, and perceptions of resource value. One aspect of gaining an advantage is the residency effect. Prior occupancy of a particular place can affect the knowledge and motivation of the resident. There could be a tactical advantage in knowing the terrain or an increased willingness to fight to maintain control of a familiar area. In this study, we evaluated the importance of shelter residency effects relative to size differences between rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) as potential competitors for access to shelter. The intensity of any residency effects was manipulated by altering the number of shelters in the arena. Our results suggest that any residency effect is very weak in this system, and if present, may often be masked by the strong and pervasive influence on contest outcome of the relative body sizes of the contestants. We also found that both shelter number and crayfish size asymmetries had strong, independent effects on levels of aggression. Dominance, but not residency status, was a factor in shelter use. 相似文献

A total of 300 samples was collected from February 1985 to August 1986 in a medium order Ozark Mountain stream. Physical habitat measurements of temperature, mean water column velocity, depth, and substrate character were recorded for each of the 25 monthly samples along with length and sex of all individuals of Orconectes neglectus (Faxon). Analysis of habitat utilization and suitability (or preference) was conducted using exponential polynomial models of hydraulic stress models. There appeared to be equal preference for depth over the range measured. Both substrate and velocity preference curves were bimodal with each mode designating certain crayfish size classes. Young-of-the-year were found primarily in cobbled, high velocity areas while adults were found in low velocity, macrophyte beds. Utilization curves for laminar sublayer thichness also reflected size-dependent phenomena where young-of-the-year were found in thin sublayer areas and adults were found primarily in thick sublayers. When separated by time and size, adults were found to occupy higher velocity, cobbled habitats during at least two months. This time period corresponded with the time of egg-bearing and further analysis yielded a time-dependent habitat suitability surface which accounted for this movement pattern. We suggest that the application of these suitability surfaces, which reflect habitat changes during the annual life cycle, will produce more accurate predictions of density and will allow better habitat management decisions under various regulated flow scenarios. 相似文献

The presence of phenotypic behavioral correlations and their connection to fitness consequences of organisms have received considerable debate within the literature. Yet, little work has been carried out to connect any behavioral correlates found within a set of laboratory studies to natural behavior observed under complex environmental conditions. To help fill this gap, individual crayfish, collected from the same local population, completed five different behavioral assays in a laboratory setting in a random order. These data were used to reveal any possible correlations for behavioral scores across all of the laboratory tests. Subsequently, these same individuals were placed into the field and video recorded for 24 hr. A separate set of field behaviors, related to the laboratory assays, were quantified from the field videos. The normalized laboratory and field behaviors were used in three stepwise statistical analyses. First, normalized data were loaded into a PCA to generate a priori hypotheses on potential behavioral correlates. These hypotheses were subsequently tested using general multiple linear regression. Finally, structural equation modeling was performed to elucidate any behavioral modules from the laboratory assays that correlated with behavioral patterns present from the fieldwork. Three laboratory‐based behavioral modules were connected to three separate field assays: exploration–avoidance, bold–shy, and aggressiveness. Yet, some behaviors exhibited in the laboratory assays were uncorrelated with any behaviors found in the field and vice versa. Results from this study provide evidence that although many different behavioral correlates may exist within laboratory settings, these same modules may not translate directly into predicting behavior under natural settings. 相似文献

Crayfish are aggressive animals that compete to acquire resources such as shelters, food, and mates. Shelters are a primary resource that crayfish use for protection from conspecifics and predators. Despite the importance of this resource, no field research has been performed that studies the acquisition and control of this resource. The present study examines shelter use in a natural habitat and the impact that shelter ownership has on the intensity and outcome of agonistic encounters. A stationary underwater camera was used to observe crayfish, Orconectes rusticus, shelter use and agonistic interactions in a natural lake environment. These shelters were formed naturally in iron outcroppings found on the limestone and detritus benthos. Crayfish activity and shelter use was found to be dependent upon a circadian cycle with most of the shelter use occurring during the morning to early afternoon (05:00–13:00 hours). Agonistic encounters in the presence of shelters resulted in short, low intensity interactions. Interestingly, fight outcomes were not significantly affected by shelter ownership, but were primarily determined by size differential of combatants. This outcome may be due to the prevalence of shelters within this habitat. Contrary to laboratory studies, these results indicate that shelter ownership may not be an important factor in determining resource‐holding potential in some habitats. 相似文献

Homing ability of the cricket Gryllus campestriswas experimentally studied in the field after passive and active displacements. Whatever the weather conditions and the nature of the displacement, crickets (18/18) home directly when they are located between 5 and 15 cm from their burrow by performing real-time orientation. When moved by the experimenter between 15 and 55 cm away from home, some crickets (26/43) can retrieve their burrow by systematic searching only after winding inward trips but they get lost (0/18) beyond 55 cm. After self-generated movements between 5 and 85 cm away from home, crickets (33/35) return to their burrow under blue sky, but they cannot home as well under overcast sky (22/34 from 5 to 65 cm and 0/5 beyond). The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, native to northeastern Mexico and southcentral USA, is today the dominant macroinvertebrate in several European countries. While the first introduction of this species into Spain is well-documented, little is known about its pathways of invasion and the reason for its rapid spread in several European countries. Study of the biology of the species has revealed a number of properties that makes this crayfish a successful invader. Procambarus clarkii exhibits properties characteristic of an r-selected species, including early maturity at small body size, rapid growth rates, large numbers of offspring at a given parental size, and relatively short life spans. It is also plastic in its life cycle, able to disperse widely in the habitat and to tolerate environmental extremes. It displays generalist and opportunistic feeding habits, consuming macrophytes and preying on amphibians. Procambarus clarkii can also replace indigenous crayfish by a combination of mechanisms, including competitive exclusion and transmission of the fungus-like Aphanomyces astaci, responsible for the crayfish plague. Finally, this species shows a wide behavioral flexibility when coping with new types of predators. The results of these studies, combined with the increasing information available in the scientific literature on this and other crayfish species, will help us understand invasions in this taxon and make predictions about the identity of future crayfish invaders. 相似文献

为筛选可用于淡水龙虾养殖群体物种分类的分子标记,对安徽省某水产养殖有限公司采集的淡水龙虾样本进行了线粒体COⅠ、16S rDNA、D-loop、Cyt b及12S rDNA基因的测序分析,并与GenBank中30个滑螯虾属(Cherax)物种的相应基因序列比对,同时,进行上述5种分子标记在种内个体间、属内种间、科内属间和目内科间的同源性变异范围比对分析。结果显示,本研究所采集淡水龙虾样本与四脊滑螯虾(C. quadricarinatus)的相似性最高,其中,1 113 bp的Cyt b相似性100%,COⅠ、16S r DNA及12S rDNA相似性都在99%以上;在以克氏原螯虾(Procambarus clarkii)为外类群构建的邻接系统发育树中,本研究样本与四脊滑螯虾聚为一支,然后与其他物种聚合构成系统树,确定本研究采集的淡水龙虾样本为四脊滑螯虾;通过同源性变异范围比对分析,在淡水龙虾养殖群体的分子分类工作中,16S rDNA、Cyt b及12S rDNA比COⅠ和D-loop这2种分子标记具有较强优势。本研究结果可为今后淡水龙虾养殖场中物种的分类鉴定工作提供参考。 相似文献

Mobile genetic elements constitute a remarkably diverse group of nonessential selfish genes that provide no apparent function to the host. These selfish genes have been implicated in host extinction, speciation and architecture of genetic systems. Homing endonucleases, encoded by the open reading frames embedded in introns or inteins of mobile genetic elements, possess double-stranded DNA-specific endonuclease activity. They inflict sequence-specific double-strand breaks at or near the homing site in intron- or intein-less allele. Subsequently, through nonreciprocal exchange the insertion sequence (intron or intein) is transferred from an intein- or intron-containing allele to an intein- or intron-less allele. The components of host double-strand break repair pathway are thought to finish the “homing” process. Several lines of evidence suggest that homing endonucleases are capable of promoting transposition into ectopic sites within or across genomes for their survival as well as dispersal in natural populations. The occurrence of inteins at high frequencies serves as instructive models for understanding the mechanistic aspects of the process of homing and its evolution. This review focuses on genetic, biochemical, structural, and phylogenetic aspects of homing endonucleases, and their comparison with restriction endonucleases. 相似文献

胚胎着床过程中,母体面的蜕膜内有绒毛外滋养层细胞、免疫细胞和蜕膜细胞组成的相互影响、相互制约的网络状免疫微环境。其淋巴细胞中,大颗粒淋巴细胞(NK)的比例高达45%,且处于特定的功能状态。机体淋巴细胞通过其表面的归巢受体与组织中高内皮小静脉(HEV)的内皮细胞结合而归巢到淋巴结或相关淋巴组织,完成淋巴细胞的再循环。目前认为选择素CD62L和CD44是最主要的淋巴细胞归巢受体,除了参与上述过程外,还在淋巴细胞活化及炎症反应过程中发挥重要作用。以往对蜕膜中细胞组分及表型变化的研究较多,而对着床过程中母体特别是蜕膜局部淋巴细胞归巢特点的研究较少,对淋巴细胞归巢受体在着床过程中的作用、动态变化及表达特点则未见报道。本文以着床期小鼠为动物模型,采用免疫荧光标记、多参数流式细胞术分析技术,对CD62L和CD44在着床期外周血淋巴细胞(PBLC)及子宫内膜/蜕膜细胞(EC/DC)中的研究发现:CD62L、CD44在着床期PBLC中均呈高表达,无明显动态变化(Fig.1);在EC/DC中,CD62L呈低表达,并于妊娠第一天(D1)呈一过性降低,D2~D5无明显变化(Fig.2);CD44在EC/DC中仍呈高表达,但于D3开始呈动态下降;至D5降至最低(Fig.3)。即:着床过程对外用血整体淋巴细胞归巢机制不 相似文献

甲壳动物的血细胞参与多种免疫反应,能够激活酚氧化酶原,产生抗菌肽或进行血细胞的封装、吞噬等. 本研究在克氏原螯虾血细胞中发现一种造血激素astakine,是与脊椎动物细胞因子前动力蛋白prokineticin同源的基因,命名为PcAst,该基因的开放阅读框为357 bp,编码118个氨基酸,具有保守的半胱氨酸残基. 半定量PCR结果显示,该基因只在血细胞中表达. 实时荧光定量PCR结果显示,在金黄色葡萄球菌和鳗弧菌刺激后,其mRNA表达量大幅上调. 白斑综合征病毒刺激后,该基因也呈持续上调表达趋势. 为进一步研究其功能,重组表达了PcAst蛋白,并对其蛋白水平表达模式进行了分析. 所有结果表明,该基因可能参与鳌虾血细胞的固有免疫应答反应,在抗细菌和抗病毒中起重要作用. 相似文献
