Is there a second fragrance gene in rice?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Aromatic rice is highly prized by most rice consumers, and many countries cultivate traditional and improved aromatic varieties. 2-Acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP) is the major aromatic compound in rice, and is believed to accumulate because of an eight-base-pair (8-bp) deletion in an allele at the fragrance locus. In this study, 2AP was quantified and the presence or absence of the fragrance allele ( fgr ) was determined in 464 samples of traditional varieties of rice from the T.T. Chang Genetic Resources Centre at the International Rice Research Institute. It was shown that a number of aromatic varieties, primarily from South and South-East Asia, do not carry the 8-bp deletion, but 2AP was identified in both raw and cooked rice of these varieties. We suggest that the 8-bp deletion in fgr is not the only cause of aroma, and at least one other mutation drives the accumulation of 2AP. The amount of 2AP in most uniform fgr genotypes was not significantly different from that in aromatic n fgr genotypes, but several fgr genotypes, primarily from South Asia, reproducibly accumulated exceptionally large amounts of 2AP. We suggest that the mutation leading to 2AP in aromatic n fgr varieties possibly originated several times and, through either domestication or evolution, the fgr gene and other alleles leading to 2AP have combined in South Asia, leading to several highly aromatic traditional varieties. The identification of multiple mutations for 2AP will enable rice breeding programmes to select actively for multiple genetic sources of 2AP, leading to the development of highly aromatic and, consequently, high-quality varieties of rice.  相似文献

It was found that in the Graafian oocytes of laboratory mice Mus musculus the population of electron-dense bodies contains two patterns of structures. One of these, designated as cortical granules, originated from the Golgi complex and was surrounded by a membrane. The other was discovered as cristae-containing mitochondrial derivatives lacked an outer membrane. It was found that the mitochondrial derivatives underwent progressive condensation and transformed into electron-dense bodies similar to germinal bodies of metazoan animals. Based on examination of Graafian follicle oocytes from 5 female individuals, about 15% of electron-dense bodies were cortical granules. However, about 85% of electron-dense bodies were condensing mitochondrial derivatives transforming into electron-dense bodies.  相似文献

The reaction of Xenopus hemoglobin with oxygen and carbon monoxide has been reinvestigated over the pH range 8.5-6.0, in the absence and presence of organic phosphates (2,3-diphosphoglycerate or inositol hexakisphosphate), to establish if the tetramer can be stabilized in a T-quaternary state by protons and polyphosphate; the equilibrium and kinetic data indicate that Xenopus hemoglobin does exhibit a Root effect. These new results are discussed with reference to those reported by Bridges et al. [(1985) Resp. Physiol. 61, 125-136] on Xenopus blood and, more generally, to the molecular definition and the structural basis of the Root effect as an extreme form of the Bohr effect.  相似文献

Much recent literature focuses on whether ontogenetic information can be used as a direct criterion for determining the polarity of character trasformations in systematic analysis. This paper reviews the relevant literature and concludes that the ontogenetic criterion is dependent on parsimony rather than the sequence observed during ontogeny. It is not, therefore, based on the discredited arguments of recapitulation. From the perspective of phyologenetic systematics the ontogenetic criterion is a valid means of polarizing character transformations that represents a special case of a broader methodology involving parsimony. The alternative perspective perspective of patttern cladistics holds that polarity should be contained within the data and not imposed upon it. Thus, ontogeny is not required to polarize characters, but ontogenetic information can generate unequivocal character interpretations in terms of the relative generality of related attributes, and in the sense that absence precedes presence. Furthermore, ontogeny is central to systematics, providing empirical evidence of character transformation, information on the whole life cycle and an escape from systematics being teleologically related to phylogenetic inference and the theory of evolution.  相似文献

Copper is an essential metal in living organisms; thus, the maintenance of adequate copper levels is of vital importance and is highly regulated. Dysfunction of copper metabolism leading to its excess or deficiency results in severe ailments. Two examples of illnesses related to alterations in copper metabolism are Menkes and Wilson diseases. Several proteins are involved in the maintenance of copper homeostasis, including copper transporters and metal chaperones. In the last several years, the beta-amyloid-precursor protein (beta-APP) and the prion protein (PrP(C)), which are related to the neurodegenerative disorders Alzheimer and prion diseases respectively, have been associated with copper metabolism. Both proteins bind copper through copper-binding domains that also have been shown to reduce copper in vitro. Moreover, this ability to reduce copper is associated with a neuroprotective effect exerted by the copper-binding domain of both proteins against copper in vivo. In addition to a functional link between copper and beta-APP or PrP(C), evidence suggests that copper has a role in Alzheimer and prion diseases. Here, we review the evidence that supports both, the role of beta-APP and PrP(C), in copper metabolism and the putative role of copper in neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

Electrophoretic data from both sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels (SDS-PAGE) and acid-urea gels reveal a protein in purified murine mammary tumor virus (MuMTV) which co-migrates with purified chick skeletal muscle actin. 125I-labeling of intact and disrupted virus preparations shows that the actin-like protein is not artifactually adsorbed to the outside of virions during isolation. Quantitative SDS- PAGE and examination of negatively stained preparations show that the actin cannot be accounted for by a contaminating population of virus- free vesicles. The ultrastructure of mammary epithelial cells and of Rous sarcoma virus-transformed chick embryo fibroblasts shows that virus extrusion is associated with filament-containing cellular processes. In particular, MuMTV is released from the ends of long microvilli which contain a bundle of 6-8-nm microfilaments and share other structural features with intestinal microvilli. We suggest that virus nucleoids require an interaction with host cell contractile proteins for their extrusion from the cell.  相似文献

The amplifier hypothesis states that selection could favour the evolution of traits in signallers that improve the ability of receivers to extract honest information from other signals or cues. We provide a formal definition of amplifiers based on the receiver's mechanisms of signal perception and we present a game-theoretical model in which males advertise their quality and females use sequential-sampling tactics to choose among prospective mates. The main effect of an amplifier on the female mating strategy is to increase her mating threshold, making the female more selective as the effectiveness of the amplifier increases. The effects of the amplifier on male advertising strategy depends both on the context and on the types of the amplifier involved. We consider two different contexts for the evolution of amplifiers (when the effect of amplifiers is on signals and when it is on cues) and two types of amplifiers (the ‘neutral amplifier’, when it improves quality assessment without altering male attractiveness, and the ‘attractive amplifier’, when it improves both quality assessment and male attractiveness). The game-theoretical model provides two main results. First, neutral and attractive amplifiers represent, respectively, a conditional and an unconditional signalling strategy. In fact, at the equilibrium, neutral amplifiers are displayed only by males whose advertising level lays above the female acceptance threshold, whereas attractive amplifiers are displayed by all signalling males, independent of their quality. Second, amplifiers of signals increase the differences in advertising levels between amplifying and not-amplifying males, but they decrease the differences within each group, so that the system converges towards an ‘all-or-nothing’ signalling strategy. By applying concepts from information theory, we show that the increase in information transfer at the perception level due to the amplifier of signals is contrasted by a decrease in information transfer at the emitter level due to the increased stereotypy of male advertising strategy.  相似文献

The very young embryo of a flowering plant is not an idealsystem in which to study the effects of auxin. Conversely, auxin isusually not considered as a major component of developmental processesin early embryogenesis. However, recent findings from both experimentalstudies in Brassica and analyses of developmental mutants inArabidopsis make it worthwhile to examine critically thepossibility that auxin may have a role in early embryogenesis. In thisreview, we will focus on specific processes, such as formation of anapical-basal axis of polarity and the initiation of the primary rootmeristem. To provide a conceptual framework in which to discuss possibleeffects of auxin, we will first briefly summarise essential features ofearly embryogenesis in Arabidopsis. This will be followed by anevaluation of relevant data suggesting a role for auxin in axisformation and root meristem initiation. Finally, we will discuss a fewexperimental approaches that we believe are necessary to examine whetheror not auxin plays a role in fundamental processes of earlyembryogenesis.  相似文献

The metabolic demand for docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3, DHA) is increased during pregnancy because of the extra needs of the fetus, expanded maternal cell mass and placenta. In Western countries maternal dietary DHA intake in pregnancy is low and it is not clear whether adaptive metabolic mechanisms, such as increased DHA synthesis from precursor fatty acids, are capable of meeting the increased DHA need in pregnancy. Consequently randomized controlled trials are important to determine whether additional dietary DHA in pregnancy modifies maternal or infant health outcomes. The available randomized comparisons of DHA supplements vs placebo have assessed outcomes as diverse as maternal depression, infant visual acuity and development, and infant growth and allergy. The outcomes of these trials have not been conclusive because they have often been limited by small sample size. On the other hand, large-scale trials assessing marine oil supplementation with large doses indicate that DHA supplementation in pregnancy is safe.  相似文献

Conservation biology is special to the extent that it fills useful roles in the scientific and conservation fields that are not being filled by practitioners of other disciplines. The emergence of the “new conservation biology” in the late 1970's and its blossoming in the 1980's and 1990's reflect, to a large degree, a failure of traditional academic ecology and the natural resource disciplines to address modern conservation problems adequately. Yet, to be successful conservation biology, as an interdisciplinary field, must build on the strengths of other disciplines both basic and applied. The new conservation biology grew out of concern over extinction of species, although the field has expanded to include issues about management of several levels of biological organization. I examine four controversial questions of importance to conservation biologists today: 1) are there any robust principles of conservation biology? 2) Is advocacy an appropriate activity of conservation biologists? 3) Are we educating conservation biologists properly? 4) Is conservation biology distinct from other biological and resource management disciplines? I answer three of these questions with a tentative “yes” and one (3) with a regretful “in most cases, no.” I see a need for broader Training for students of conservation biology, more emphasis on collecting basic field data, compelling applications of conservation biology to real problems, increased influence on policy, and expansion of the international scope of the discipline. If all these occur, conservation biology will by truly special.  相似文献

Concerns have been raised that posterior probabilities on phylogenetic trees can be unreliable when the true tree is unresolved or has very short internal branches, because existing methods for Bayesian phylogenetic analysis do not explicitly evaluate unresolved trees. Two recent papers have proposed that evaluating only resolved trees results in a "star tree paradox": when the true tree is unresolved or close to it, posterior probabilities were predicted to become increasingly unpredictable as sequence length grows, resulting in inflated confidence in one resolved tree or another and an increasing risk of false-positive inferences. Here we show that this is not the case; existing Bayesian methods do not lead to an inflation of statistical confidence, provided the evolutionary model is correct and uninformative priors are assumed. Posterior probabilities do not become increasingly unpredictable with increasing sequence length, and they exhibit conservative type I error rates, leading to a low rate of false-positive inferences. With infinite data, posterior probabilities give equal support for all resolved trees, and the rate of false inferences falls to zero. We conclude that there is no star tree paradox caused by not sampling unresolved trees.  相似文献
