The aim of the present research was to determine whether the recently identified and characterized new fibrous amphibole fluoro-edenite may induce a cytopathic response in cultured cells. The final goal was to gain suggestions on the potentiality of fluoro-edenite to be harmful to human beings. Epidemiological studies, in fact, have shown an excess of developing mesothelioma among residents in Biancavilla, a town in eastern Sicily located in the Etna volcanic area. Therefore, we treated human lung fibroblasts, human lung alveolar epithelial cancer cell line A549 and monocyte-macrophage cell line J774 with fluoro-edenite or crocidolite; the latter used as a highly toxic amphibole asbestos reference. Our results show that fluoro-edenite may induce functional modifications and affects some biochemical parameters in tested cell cultures in a concentration and time dependent manner. However, the observed functional modifications induced by fluoro-edenite are generally less dramatic than those induced by crocidolite and more evident on human lung alveolar epithelial cancer cell line A549 with respect to those obtained on human lung fibroblasts or monocyte-macrophage cell line J774. The sequence of the damage is hypothesised to be as follows: at increasing fluoro-edenite concentrations, and/or treatment times, the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production could trigger significant DNA damage in cell cultures, concomitantly with drop in cell metabolism and increase in lactic dehydrogenase release. In conclusion, according to our data, fluoro-edenite appears as a probable carcinogenic agent, responsible for the high incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma in Biancavilla.  相似文献

An increased standardised rate of mortality from pleural mesothelioma among the population of Biancavilla (Sicily, Italy) has been attributed to exposure to fluoro-edenite fibres. Our aim was to establish whether and how these fibres may induce pathological effects using an in vivo model. Lung tissue collected from 60 healthy sheep selected from six flocks habitually grazing near Biancavilla and from 10 control sheep was fixed formalin and paraffin-embedded; sections were stained with haematoxylin-eosin, Masson trichrome and Gomori argentic impregnation. Histochemical studies and immunohistochemical analysis for the localisation of TRAIL, DR5 and MMP13 were also performed. The lungs of exposed sheep exhibited fibrosis and loss of alveolar architecture with honeycombing of alveolar cavities. Fluoro-edenite fibres were detected close to the alveolar epithelium and interstitia. The parenchyma showed hyaline degeneration and strong PAS-positivity in the interstitium, proteoglycan alterations, reflecting a damaged basal membrane and an involvement of the interstitial matrix. MMP-13 was overexpressed, mainly in fibroblasts and epithelial cells, while positivity for TRAIL and DR5 was detected on alveolar surfaces and in the vascular stroma. The initial pathological event seems to involve first the alveoli and subsequently the interstitium, giving rise to classic honeycombing. The triggering event at the level of type I pneumocytes would damage the cytoplasmic membrane resulting in loss of cell elements and exposure of underlying capillaries, and eventually in a series of reactions including macrophage activation, possible release of growth factors and metaplasic reconstruction of lung alveoli. Immunopositivity for TRAIL and MMP-13 receptor suggests that apoptotic processes may also be activated by fluoro-edenite.  相似文献

We previously showed that apoptosis in the lungs of sheep exposed to fluoro-edenite fibres is induced via the receptor pathway. The present study was performed to gain further insights into the mechanisms of activation of programmed cell death induced by the fibres. Fluoro-edenite fibres are similar in size and morphology to some amphibolic asbestos fibres. They have been found in benmoreitic lavas, in the local stone quarry, in building materials and in road paving at Biancavilla, a town in eastern Sicily (Italy), where epidemiological surveys revealed a cluster of mortality from pleural mesothelioma. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis. Since fluoro-edenite has been shown to activate the apoptotic process, we set out to characterise the expression of apoptosis-regulating proteins in fluoro-edenite-exposed lung disease and sought to determine if apoptosis results from fluoro-edenite exposure. Lung tissue from apparently healthy sheep habitually grazing near Biancavilla was processed for immunohistochemical localisation of bcl-2 and bax. Results showed epithelial and interstitial bax overexpression, especially in cells directly in contact with the fibres, and negative bcl-2 immunoexpression. TUNEL-positive cells were detected in alveoli and connective tissue. The integrity of alveolar epithelium and alveolar apoptosis are critical determinants in the pathways that initiate fibrogenesis in the lung and fibroblastic foci are usually found close to abnormal or denuded alveolar epithelium. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that apoptosis is an important mechanism for removing cells with irreparable fluoro-edenite-induced genetic changes that predispose them to a neoplastic evolution.  相似文献

To effectively monitor the atmospheric quality of small-scale areas, it is necessary to optimize the locations of the monitoring sites. This study combined geographic parameters extraction by GIS with fuzzy matter-element analysis. Geographic coordinates were extracted by GIS and transformed into rectangular coordinates. These coordinates were input into the Gaussian plume model to calculate the pollutant concentration at each site. Fuzzy matter-element analysis, which is used to solve incompatible problems, was used to select the locations of sites. The matter element matrices were established according to the concentration parameters. The comprehensive correlation functions KA (xj) and KB (xj), which reflect the degree of correlation among monitoring indices, were solved for each site, and a scatter diagram of the sites was drawn to determine the final positions of the sites based on the functions. The sites could be classified and ultimately selected by the scatter diagram. An actual case was tested, and the results showed that 5 positions can be used for monitoring, and the locations conformed to the technical standard. In the results of this paper, the hierarchical clustering method was used to improve the methods. The sites were classified into 5 types, and 7 locations were selected. Five of the 7 locations were completely identical to the sites determined by fuzzy matter-element analysis. The selections according to these two methods are similar, and these methods can be used in combination. In contrast to traditional methods, this study monitors the isolated point pollutant source within a small range, which can reduce the cost of monitoring.  相似文献

Linking environmental computer simulation models and geographic information systems (GIS) is now a common practice to scale up simulations of complex ecosystem processes for decision support. Unfortunately, several important issues of upscaling using GIS are rarely considered; in particular scale dependency of models, availability of input data, support of input and validation data, and uncertainty in prediction including error propagation from the GIS. We linked the biogeochemical Forest‐DNDC model to a GIS database to predict growth of Eucalyptus globulus plantations at two different scales (~0.045 ha plot?1 scale and ~100 ha grid?1 scale) across Victoria, in south‐eastern Australia. Results showed that Forest‐DNDC was not scale dependent across the range of scales investigated. Reduced availability of input data at the larger scale may introduce severe prediction errors, but did not require adjustment of the model in this study. Differences in the support of input and validation data led to an underestimation of predictive precision but an overestimation of prediction accuracy. Increasing data support, produced a high level of prediction accuracy (?e%), but a medium level of predictive precision (r2=0.474, ME=0.318) after statistical validation. GIS error contribution could be detected but was not readily or reliably quantified. In a regional case study for 2653 ha of E. globulus plantations, the linked model GIS system estimated a total standing biomass of 95 260 t C for mid‐2003 and a net CO2 balance of ?45 671 t CO2‐C yr?1 for the entire year of 2002. This study showed that regional predictions of forest growth and carbon sequestration can be produced with greater confidence after a comprehensive assessment of upscaling issues.  相似文献

Question: Can GIS and GPS technology be used to quantify the hydrological regime of different plant communities on turloughs (groundwater dependent calcareous wetlands)? Location: Skealoghan turlough, County Mayo, Ireland. Methods: Plant communities were mapped and digitised with GIS software and a digital elevation model of the site was constructed from differential GPS data. Together with records of water level fluctuations on the site from May 2001 to May 2004, these data were used to calculate hydrological variables for each plant community. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to identify groups of plant communities with similar hydrological regimes. Results: 15 plant communities were mapped at Skea loghan, with the Cirsio‐Molinietum and Ranunculo‐Potentilletum anserinae being the dominant phytosociological associations. Skealoghan is subject to large temporal and spatial variation in its hydrological regime and fluctuations in water level are intrinsically linked to rainfall. The spatial variation in flooding can be linked to the vegetation zones. Conclusions: GIS and DGPS technology can be used to quantify the hydrological regime of different plant communities on turloughs. Since the hydrological regime is a major environmental factor controlling the vegetation composition of the site, the maintenance of natural flooding regimes is a vital component for the conservation and management of the diverse vegetation mosaic at Skealoghan turlough.  相似文献

Rat carrageenin-induced pleurisy was used to clarify the role of prostaglandin H synthase (PGHS)-2 in acute inflammation. Intrapleural injection of 0.2 ml of 2% λ-carrageenin induced accumulation of exudate and infiltration of leukocytes into the pleural cavity. When PGHS-1 and -2 proteins in the pleural exudate cells were analyzed by Western blot analysis, PGHS-2 was detectable from 1 hr after carrageenin injection. Its level rose sharply, remained high from 3 to 7 hr after injection, and then fell to near the detection limit. PGHS-1 was also detected, but kept almost the same level throughout the course of the pleurisy. Levels of prostaglandin (PG) E2 and thromboxane (TX) B2 in the exudate increased from hour 3 to hour 7, and then declined. Thus, the changes of the level of PGE2 were closely paralleled those of PGHS-2.The selective PGHS-2 inhibitors NS-398, nimesulide and SC-58125 suppressed the inflammatory reaction and caused a marked decrease in the level of PGE2 but not in those of TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF. These results suggest that the PGHS-2 expressed in the pleural exudate cells may be involved in PGE2 formation at the site of inflammation.  相似文献

Abstract

The Bioregenerative Life Support program CAB (Controllo Ambientale Biorigenerativo) is a key element of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) Medicine & Biotechnology scientific program, set forth in the ASI Activity Plan 2006–2008. The CAB program started in October 2006, under the prime partnership of Thales Alenia Space Italia, with a feasibility study of a controlled biological system, allowing the regeneration of resources and the production of food for life support in long duration missions. Main constituents of the CAB program are: (a) Higher plants as basic elements for food and oxygen production, CO2 regeneration and water purification via the photosynthetic and leaf transpiration processes, and (b) biological & physico-chemical systems for environmental control, monitoring, power & data distribution, etc. The sectors of technological and scientific concern are practically all the ones typical for life support systems in the frame of long duration human missions; i.e., food production, in particular via the cultivation of higher plants, and food management; air regeneration (production of O2, removal of CO2, trace gas control); water regeneration (urine processing, gray water processing, potable water management); solid waste processing; resources allocation and storage; control of environmental conditions (Thermal-hygrometric, light, pressure, radiation, etc).  相似文献

This study evaluates the effectiveness of community production and respiration measurements as monitoring tools for environmental impact evaluations and compares these data to community structural data.In Prickly Pear Creek, Montana, production and respiration rates were determined for periphyton communities in control, impact and recovery reaches using colonized granite substrates and sealed plexiglas chambers. Values for gross primary productivity (GPP), community respiration (CR24), ash-free dry mass (AFDM) and chlorophyll a content (Chla) were obtained for each granite slab. Of these, AFDM, Chla and CR24 were statistically significant among sites (P0.01). Although mean values for GPP appeared to differ among reaches, statistical differences could not be inferred because of large variances associated with this measure. These data indicate that inherent variability may limit the use of community function measures in routine environmental monitoring. However, production/respiration methods provide valuable data about emergent properties of aquatic communities that cannot be derived from routine population censuses.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the potential suitability of forest stands of the Mt. Baek-un region in South Korea as habitats for Kirengeshoma koreana by determining essential biotic and abiotic environmental factors using MaxEnt. Presence data were collected from 16 plots in the study area, and a forest stand map was used to assess the potential suitability of the plot as habitat for the species. The topographic site characteristics were analyzed using GIS, and the terrain relief conditions were measured using the topographic position index. The site environmental factors that significantly influenced the potential suitability of the forest stands as habitats for K. koreana were chosen using MaxEnt. The results indicated that landform types, soil depth, and water and light availability at the forest floor were the factors that most strongly influenced K. koreana habitat suitability. These significant environmental factors were assessed to determine the forest stand sites that were most suitable as potential habitats for the species in the study area.  相似文献

The invertebrate species index (ISI) is a new biotic index to assess stream health in southeast Queensland, Australia, using benthic macroinvertebrates. The index aims to refine stream monitoring, in particular for eutrophication, as nutrient input is a major stressor of streams in the region. Biotic indices previously used for the region were based on sensitivity scores for macroinvertebrate families and orders, and were valid for all streams across the continent. The ISI is based on species level and tailored to the specific traits of southeast Queensland, thus yielding an increased level of detection of biological change. This will improve monitoring of environmental impact on a regional and local scale. The ISI is a site-specific index calculated as the weighted average (WA) of species’ sensitivity scores (S10), with a species-specific indicator weight (W) and the abundance (A) of each species used as weights. S10 scores for 203 species of benthic macroinvertebrates ranging from 10 (species most sensitive to pollution) to 1 (tolerant of excessive pollution) were derived by means of WA regression and calibration using site scores representing an environmental impact gradient. W measures the indicator strength of the species, and was derived from the weighted standard deviation of the S10. The initial site scores for the WA modeling were derived using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to ordinate the sites along a gradient associated with 12 abiotic variables. The data on benthic macroinvertebrates are based on 212 quantitative samples collected in wadeable freshwater streams in southeast Queensland. Two major stream types, (1) small creeks, mainly of uplands and (2) larger streams and rivers of lowlands, were recognised for the region, and for both types the ISI range representing reference condition was established. These reference conditions can be used to establish ecological quality ratios by comparing observed to expected indices and to define ecological quality classes. The ISI is the first biotic index for streams in Australia that uses sensitivity scores and indicator weights for macroinvertebrate species. There is a growing trend in Australia to identify stream macroinvertebrates to species level and to study their specific traits and ecological requirements. The reasons for this are manifold; assessing and monitoring stream health is only one of them. For most regions of Australia, no common ground exists, so far, on how to use species data for stream health assessment. The new biotic index fills this gap for southeast Queensland in providing a standard for the use of species level data in stream health assessment.  相似文献

Bioremediation is a popular method in degrading diesel fuel contaminants from soil. Bioremediation can be enhanced by estimating the effect of important environmental parameters on microbial activity. Respirometry was used to develop empirical models describing the effects of temperature, moisture, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentration on microbial activity in a diesel-contaminated soil from Wyoming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) data were analyzed using a base equation where its coefficient values were functions of each parameter. Two physiologically different groups of microorganisms were identified from the results under different operating temperatures. The empirical correlations were combined into one model and this model was tested against a hydrocarbon-contaminated soil collected from a site in Egypt with similar history of contamination. The predicted CO2 evolution agreed well with the actual data obtained from the Egyptian soil samples, showing a sound predicting power of the empirical model for petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation. Overall, the empirical correlations developed from the respirometric data provide a method to describe microbial activity in diesel-contaminated soils.  相似文献

As part of a program to select maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) genotypes for resistance to low winter temperatures, we examined variation in photosystem II activity by chlorophyll fluorescence. Populations and families within populations from contrasting climates were tested during two consecutive winters through two progeny trials, one located at a continental and xeric site and one at a mesic site with Atlantic influence. We also obtained the LT50, or the temperature that causes 50% damage, by controlled freezing and the subsequent analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence in needles and stems that were collected from populations at the continental trial site. P. pinaster showed sensitivity to winter stress at the continental site, during the colder winter. The combination of low temperatures, high solar irradiation and low precipitation caused sustained decreases in maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), quantum yield of non-cyclic electron transport (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (qP). The variation in photochemical parameters was larger among families than among populations, and population differences appeared only under the harshest conditions at the continental site. As expected, the environmental effects (winter and site) on the photochemical parameters were much larger than the genotypic effects (population or family). LT50 was closely related to the minimum winter temperatures of the population''s range. The dark-adapted Fv/Fm ratio discriminated clearly between interior and coastal populations.In conclusion, variations in Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, qP and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) in response to winter stress were primarily due to the differences between the winter conditions and the sites and secondarily due to the differences among families and their interactions with the environment. Populations from continental climates showed higher frost tolerance (LT50) than coastal populations that typically experience mild winters. Therefore, LT50, as estimated by Fv/Fm, is a reliable indicator of frost tolerance among P. pinaster populations.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for studying the neighbourhood (dispersal) movement of pest insects that overcomes the major problems associated with release/recapture experiments. The method has been developed using the carrot fly, Psila rosae (Fab.) (Diptera: Psilidae), as the experimental insect. It involves building up a large population of insects in an area free of other host plants, and then, as the insects disperse in the spring, monitoring the fall‐off in numbers of insects with increasing distance. Estimates of the fall‐off in numbers of the carrot fly were obtained by using sticky traps to monitor changes in fly numbers in 11 small plots of carrots drilled 130–1300 m away from the site at which the flies emerged (emergence site) in the spring. A strong linear relationship (r2 = 0.96) was obtained between the log10 numbers of flies caught in each plot and the log10 distance the plot was from the emergence site. Few flies were caught more than 1 km from the emergence site. A linear relationship (r2 = 0.86) was also obtained between the date when 50% of the flies were caught in each plot and the distance the plot was from the emergence site. The date of 50% capture was delayed by 1 day for each 100 m the given plot was away from the emergence site. This suggests that when carrot flies move to find new crops, the population moves about 100 m day?1. About one million flies would have to be released in conventional release/recapture experiments to obtain data as robust as those collected using the current method. The major breakthrough of this method is that dispersal can be estimated for an insect species that, although a major pest of field crops of carrots and parsnips, is exceptionally difficult to rear, even in relatively small numbers, under controlled‐environment conditions.  相似文献

From the mid-1990s, a network of surveillance and prevention of atmospheric contamination has been running to control the levels of airborne pollution in urban and industrial (petrochemical) areas of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain). Airborne concentrations of SO2, NO2, O3, H2S, and CO, as well as PM10, are routinely analyzed and used to establish the air quality. However, only single substances, rather than the global incidence of all contaminants as a whole, are taken into account. Moreover, specific data from the population are not considered. In the present study, a modified version of a previously developed fuzzy-based risk evaluation technique was developed. The method was fed with real monitoring data, instead of theoretical results from modeling. Hazard (air levels) and Exposure parameters (location sensitivity and population density) were used to create fuzzy sets and, subsequently, to generate a risk map. This tool was subsequently applied to the case-study of the petrochemical area of Tarragona by means of generating risk maps. The combination of geographic information system (GIS) and fuzzy logic tools proved to be successful as a help for stakeholders involved in the decision-making process.  相似文献

To examine the method for estimating the spatial patterns of soil respiration (Rs) in agricultural ecosystems using remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS), Rs rates were measured at 53 sites during the peak growing season of maize in three counties in North China. Through Pearson''s correlation analysis, leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content, aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, and soil total nitrogen content were selected as the factors that affected spatial variability in Rs during the peak growing season of maize. The use of a structural equation modeling approach revealed that only LAI and SOC content directly affected Rs. Meanwhile, other factors indirectly affected Rs through LAI and SOC content. When three greenness vegetation indices were extracted from an optical image of an environmental and disaster mitigation satellite in China, enhanced vegetation index (EVI) showed the best correlation with LAI and was thus used as a proxy for LAI to estimate Rs at the regional scale. The spatial distribution of SOC content was obtained by extrapolating the SOC content at the plot scale based on the kriging interpolation method in GIS. When data were pooled for 38 plots, a first-order exponential analysis indicated that approximately 73% of the spatial variability in Rs during the peak growing season of maize can be explained by EVI and SOC content. Further test analysis based on independent data from 15 plots showed that the simple exponential model had acceptable accuracy in estimating the spatial patterns of Rs in maize fields on the basis of remotely sensed EVI and GIS-interpolated SOC content, with R2 of 0.69 and root-mean-square error of 0.51 µmol CO2 m−2 s−1. The conclusions from this study provide valuable information for estimates of Rs during the peak growing season of maize in three counties in North China.  相似文献

The hypothesis that auxin and gibberellic acid (GA3) control the differentiation of primary phloem fibers is confirmed for the stem of Coleus blumei Benth. Indoleacetic acid (IAA) alone sufficed to cause the differentiation of a few primary phloem fibers. In long term experiments auxin induced a considerable number of fibers in mature internodes. GA3 by itself did not exert any effect on fiber differentiation. Combinatiosn of IAA with GA3 completely replaced the role of the leaves in primary phloem fiber differentiation qualitatively and quantitatively. Although the combined effect of the two growth hormones diminished considerably with increasing distance from the source of induction, auxin with GA3 or IAA alone induced fibers in a few internodes below the application site. When various combinations of both hormones were applied, high concentrations of IAA stimulated rapid differentiation of fibers with thick secondary walls, while high levels of GA3 resulted in long fibers with thin walls. The size of the primary phloem fibers correlated with the dimensions of the differentiating internode, thereby providing evidence that both growth regulators figure in the control of stem extension. High IAA/low GA3 concentrations have an inhibitory effect on internode elongation, whereas low IAA/high GA3 concentrations promote maximal stem elongation.  相似文献

Summary Nine potent and selective substance P receptor antagonists (NK1 -) were analyzed with respect to their conformational space, with the aim to suggest probable conformations adopted at the receptor site and superposition rules for each structure (pharmacophore mapping). Key atoms within the ligands as well as receptor site points were considered in order to identify acceptable solutions (DISCO program). The results obtained allowed the suggestion or probable peptidic pharmacophores based on the structure of 1 (FK888). This knowledge was used to search commercial databases. The number and diversity of known retrieved NK1 antagonists allowed a general evaluation of the proposed pharmacophores. Moreover, a search in our proprietary database detected a short peptide with modest affinity but high selectivity for the NK1 receptor. The combination of molecular modeling with database searches is useful in a strategy aiming to develop new NK1 antagonists starting from existing knowledge.  相似文献

A database of terminal restriction fragments (tRFs) of the 16S rRNA gene was set up utilizing 13 restriction enzymes and 17,327 GenBank sequences. A computer program, termed TReFID, was developed to allow identification of any of these 17,327 sequences by means of polygons generated from the specific tRFs of each bacterium. The TReFID program complements and exceeds in its data content the Web-based phylogenetic assignment tool recently described by A. D. Kent, D. J. Smith, B. J. Benson, and E. W. Triplett (Appl. Environ. Microb. 69:6768-6766, 2003). The method to identify bacteria is different, as is the region of the 16S rRNA gene employed in the present program. For the present communication the software of the tRF profiles has also been extended to allow screening for genes coding for N2 fixation (nifH) and denitrification (nosZ) in any bacterium or environmental sample. A number of controls were performed to test the reliability of the TReFID program. Furthermore, the TReFID program has been shown to permit the analysis of the bacterial population structure of bacteria by means of their 16S rRNA, nifH, and nosZ gene content in an environmental habitat, as exemplified for a sample from a forest soil. The use of the TReFID program reveals that noncultured denitrifying and dinitrogen-fixing bacteria might play a more dominant role in soils than believed hitherto.  相似文献

Purpose

Cotton yarns spun from natural fibers are widely used in the apparel industry. Most of waste cotton goods are now disposed by incineration or landfill, which brings resource and environmental challenges to the society. Using the waste cotton to spin yarns is an alternative way to forward a more sustainable future. In this research, two scenarios for the environmental impacts of yarns spun from corresponding fibers are investigated, including recycled cotton fibers and virgin cotton fibers.

Methods

The life cycle assessment (LCA) has been conducted according to the collected data from on-site investigation of typical production factories. The life cycle for the recycled cotton yarn production is divided into five stages, i.e., raw material acquisition, transportation, breaking, mixing, and spinning. The life cycle of virgin cotton yarn production is been divided into four stages, i.e., raw material acquisition, transportation, mixing, and spinning. The functional unit is 1000 kg produced yarns which are used for weaving into the fabrics. Notable impacts on climate change, fossil depletion, water depletion, and human toxicity were observed.

Results

The life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) results show that environmental impacts of recycled cotton yarns are far less than those of virgin cotton yarns, except for climate change and water depletion. The reason is that the land occupation and irrigation water have great impact on environmental impacts of cotton cultivation. In spinning, the electricity is the key factor whose environmental impacts account for the most in the virgin cotton yarn scenario, while the electricity and water consumptions are the key factors for the recycled cotton yarn scenario in the life cycle of yarn production. The sensitivity analysis indicates that improving energy efficiency can significantly reduce environmental burdens for both the two scenarios. The uncertainty distribution of water depletion, human toxicity, fossil depletion, and climate change of the two scenarios were determined with a 90% confidence interval.

Conclusions

The LCIA results reveal recycled cotton yarn is a viable alternative to relieve resource and environmental pressure. About 0.5 ha of agricultural land can be saved, 6600 kg CO2 eq can be reduced, and 2783 m3 irrigation water can be saved by using 1000 kg of the recycled cotton yarns. It can be concluded that the recycled cotton fibers can be served as a substitute for virgin cotton fibers to reduce agricultural land and avoid environmental impacts generated from the cotton planting.
