The application of low-cost adsorbents obtained from plant wastes as a replacement for costly conventional methods of removing heavy metal ions from wastewater has been reviewed. It is well known that cellulosic waste materials can be obtained and employed as cheap adsorbents and their performance to remove heavy metal ions can be affected upon chemical treatment. In general, chemically modified plant wastes exhibit higher adsorption capacities than unmodified forms. Numerous chemicals have been used for modifications which include mineral and organic acids, bases, oxidizing agent, organic compounds, etc. In this review, an extensive list of plant wastes as adsorbents including rice husks, spent grain, sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, fruit wastes, weeds and others has been compiled. Some of the treated adsorbents show good adsorption capacities for Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Ni.  相似文献

Biosorption is known as an effective way to clean‐up water from organic and inorganic contaminants and has also emerged as a promising technology to recover critical substances. Tannins are renewable materials, coming from multiple vegetable sources. A variety of biosorbents have been developed from tannins, including tannin resins, rigid foams, composites with mesoporous silica, cellulose, collagen, and magnetic adsorbents. These materials have shown an excellent ability to uptake heavy‐metal cations (Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Cr(III)), owning to the chelating ability provided by the plentiful adjacent hydroxyl groups. In addition, tannin‐adsorbents have shown exceptional ability to remove Cr(VI), and to uptake Au(III) and Pd(II) from strong acidic solutions, which has evident application in the recovery of precious metals from e‐wastes leaching. The fact that tannin‐adsorbents can reduce the oxidation state of these adsorbates to Cr(III) and to elemental species of Au and Pd is interesting. Adsorption of dyes, surfactants, pharmaceuticals and antimony is also feasible, but the removal of certain metalloid species, such as arsenic and phosphate, seems to be limited even after applying chemical modifications. This article presents a systematic review on the preparation of tannin‐adsorbents and their application in water decontamination and in the recovery of critical metals.  相似文献

Concentrations of pollutants vary in wastes from different sources. However, existing waste input‐output (WIO) models do not take these differing concentrations into account. This article proposes a new category of model, which we are calling a waste input‐output model at the substance level (WIOS model). The WIOS model considers variations in waste composition. These variations potentially affect the life cycle inventory of the waste treatment stage. The proposed model is expected to produce more accurate results than existing WIO models that do not consider variations in the composition of wastes. In addition, the proposed model provides a method to trace substances undergoing waste treatment. In this article, use of the WIOS model is illustrated by simulating the overall environmental loads of total organic carbon from wastewater treatment at a facility in Germany. The results show that variations in the composition of wastes entering treatment significantly affect the modeled estimates of total environmental loads caused by wastewater treatment. In addition, the results of the proposed model are different from results given by existing hybrid input‐output WIO models that do not consider variations in the composition of wastewater as it undergoes treatment.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the persistence of Escherichia coli O157 in contrasting organic wastes spread to land and to assess the potential environmental risk associated with the disposal of these wastes to land. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-seven organic wastes originating from slaughterhouses, wastewater treatment plants (raw and treated sewage), creameries and farms (bovine slurry), were inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 and incubated at 10 degrees C. Although pathogen numbers gradually declined in all the wastes, albeit at different rates even in the same waste type, E. coli O157:H7 was still viable in 77% of organic wastes tested after 2 months. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term storage of organic wastes led to a significant and gradual decline in E. coli O157:H7 numbers. Consequently, storage may be a useful means of reducing the pathogen load of wastes destined for land application. However, in most cases, long-term storage cannot be expected to completely eliminate E. coli O157:H7 from waste. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Our results indicate that current legislation may be insufficient to protect the environment from E. coli O157:H7 contamination from untreated wastes spread to land.  相似文献

Cesium is the major fission product of uranium, which widely exists in radioactive wastewater. Radiocesium has potential adverse effects on human health and ecological environment. Different methods such as chemical precipitation, coagulation/co-precipitation, solvent extraction, membrane process, chemical reduction, and adsorption have been used to remove radioactive cesium from aqueous solution. However, the development of innovative technologies capable of selectively removing radioactive cesium is still imperative yet challenging. This review focused on cesium removal using various separation technologies, including chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, membrane separation, and adsorption. The key restraints for cesium removal, as well as the recent progress of these methods have also been discussed. Particular attention has been paid to the adsorption methods, which has been highlighted by introducing the latest advances in inorganic adsorbents (such as metal hexacyanoferrates, clay minerals, carbon-based-adsorbents, and ammonium molybdophosphate), organic adsorbents (such as ion exchange resin, metal–organic frameworks and supramolecular/indicator grafting adsorbents), and biosorbents (such as agroforestry wastes and microbial biomass). Adsorption-based methods are high efficient in separation of cesium ions from aqueous streams, and adsorption of cesium ions has been investigated intensively and even used in practical applications, there is still considerable scope for improvement in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity.

Activated carbons were prepared from the agricultural solid wastes, silk cotton hull, coconut tree sawdust, sago waste, maize cob and banana pith and used to eliminate heavy metals and dyes from aqueous solution. Adsorption of all dyes and metal ions required a very short time and gave quantitative removal. Experimental results show all carbons were effective for the removal of pollutants from water. Since all agricultural solid wastes used in this investigation are freely, abundantly and locally available, the resulting carbons are expected to be economically viable for wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Literature highlights harmful effects of pesticides and untreated wastewater use on farmers' health but none of the studies explore the magnitude of deleterious health effects simultaneously. The objective of the study is to quantify pesticide and untreated wastewater induced health symptoms among vegetable growers and to investigate which one is a bigger culprit. A sample of 830 vegetable growers was selected by stratified random sampling from three major vegetable growing districts of Pakistan's Punjab. A two stage estimation technique is employed to estimate unbiased health effects of vegetable growers after controlling for pesticide endogeneity. The results demonstrate that both untreated wastewater and pesticide quantities are responsible for acute symptoms, but comparison of their scaled coefficients indicates that wastewater is twofold responsible for acute symptoms than pesticide. To minimize these negative effects, a policy of untreated disposal of wastewater in peri-urban areas for crop production needs to be re-designed. The installation of a treatment plant by collecting pollution premium from untreated wastewater emitters seems to be the most sustainable and practically viable option. It is also observed that pesticide is contributing to farmers' acute symptoms; hence, awareness campaigns about judicious and safe use of pesticides may help to mitigate acute symptoms.  相似文献

Agricultural and food-industry residues constitute a major proportion (almost 30%) of worldwide agricultural production. These wastes mainly comprise lignocellulosic materials, fruit and vegetable wastes, sugar-industry wastes as well as animal and fisheries refuse and byproducts. Agro-residues are rich in many bioactive and nutraceutical compounds, such as polyphenolics, carotenoids and dietary fiber among others. Agro residues are a major valuable biomass and present potential solutions to problems of animal nutrition and the worldwide supply of protein and calories, if appropriate technologies can be used for their valorization by nutrient enrichment. Technologies available for protein enrichment of these wastes include solid substrate fermentation, ensiling, and high solid or slurry processes. Technologies to be developed for the reprocessing of these wastes need to take account of the peculiarities of individual wastes and the environment in which they are generated, reprocessed, and used. In particular, such technologies need to deliver products that are safe, not just for animal feed use, but also from the perspective of human feeding. This review focuses on the major current applications of solid-state fermentation in relation to the feed sector.  相似文献

The current review paper deals with critical evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption equilibrium uptakes of heavy metals, dyes and other organic pollutants from the wastewater using low-cost adsorbents, activated carbon derived from agricultural waste, industrial wastes and other important adsorbent materials. Present review paper focus the spontaneity of adsorption processes when the thermodynamic parameters were assessed with the compensation effects of standard enthalpy change (ΔHo) and standard entropy change (ΔSo) with temperature. This paper also investigates the spontaneity of adsorption on the basis of thermodynamic criteria of spontaneity and the temperature range to predict feasibility of the adsorption processes.  相似文献

Methane derived from anaerobic treatment of organic wastes has a great potential to be an alternative fuel. Abundant biomass from various industries could be a source for biomethane production where combination of waste treatment and energy production would be an advantage. This article summarizes the importance of the microbial population, with a focus on the methanogenic archaea, on the anaerobic fermentative biomethane production from biomass. Types of major wastewaters that could be the source for biomethane generation such as brewery wastewater, palm oil mill effluent, dairy wastes, cheese whey and dairy wastewater, pulp and paper wastewaters and olive oil mill wastewaters in relevance to their dominant methanogenic population are fully discussed in this article.  相似文献

Heavy metals contamination in water has been an issue to the environment and human health. The persisting contamination level has been observed and concerned by the public due to continuous deterioration of water quality. On the other hand, conventional treatment system could not completely remove the toxic metals in the water, thus alternative purification methods using inexpensive materials were endeavor to improve the current treatment process. Wide ranges of low cost adsorbents were used to remove heavy metal in aqueous solution and wastewater. The low cost adsorbents were usually collected from agricultural waste, seafood waste, food waste, industrial by-product and soil. These adsorbents are readily available in a copious amount. Besides, the pretreatment are not complicated to be conducted on the raw products, which is economically sound for an alternative treatment. The previous studies have provided much evidence of low cost adsorbents’ efficiency in removing metal ions from aqueous solution or wastewater. In this review, several low cost adsorbents in the recent literature have been studied. The maximum adsorption capacity, affecting factors such as pH, contact times, temperature, initial concentration and modified materials were revised and summarized in this review for further reference. Comparisons of the adsorbent between the modified and natural products were also demonstrated to provide a clear understanding on the kinetic uptake of the selected adsorbents. Some of the natural adsorbents appeared as good heavy metal removal, while some were not and require further modifications and improvements to enhance the adsorption capacity. SWOT analysis (strength, weakness, opportunities, threat) was also performed on the low cost adsorbents to identify the advantages of using low cost adsorbents and solve the weaknesses encountered by the utilization of low cost materials. This tool helps to determine the potential quality of low cost materials in the application for water and wastewater treatment.  相似文献

In this study, heavy metal phyto-accumulation potential of selected cultivars of two leafy vegetables on irrigation with municipal wastewater and human health risks were investigated. Municipal wastewater chemistry was recorded significantly different from groundwater control and led to the two-fold high enrichment of soil heavy metal contents (Ni, 19.46; Pb, 23.94; Co, 4.68; Cd, 1.4 in mg/kg, respectively). The biodegradability and toxicity of low concentrations of oily wastewater (bilgewater) were tested under simulated sanitary wastewater treatment conditions. This was done to establish the feasibility of a combined shipboard oily and nonoily wastewater treatment system. The biodegradability of oily wastewater was determined by proxy; 14C-labeled dodecane, toluene, and phenanthrene (representing alkane, aromatic, and polyaromatic compounds, respectively) were mineralized in petroleum fuels and lubricants. We found that low concentrations of oily wastewater components were mineralized, even in the presence of more abundant substrates (such as synthetic graywater, containing vegetable oil, detergent, gelatin, and starch). The toxic effects of diesel fuel and several other components of oily wastewater (such as surfactants and a synthetic lubricant) on a na?ve wastewater assemblage was also tested. In concentrations much higher than would be expected under normal shipboard conditions, we found no evidence of toxic effects of the bilgewater compounds tested. Thus, a combined shipboard bilgewater and sanitary wastewater system might be feasible.  相似文献

The present research work deals with the production of activated carbons by chemical activation and pyrolysis of sewage sludges. The adsorbent properties of these sewage sludges based activated carbons were studied by liquid-phase adsorption tests. Dyes removal from colored wastewater being a possible application for sludge based adsorbents, methylene blue and saphranine removing from solution was studied. Pure and binary adsorption assays were performed in batch and fixed bed systems. In all cases studied, the adsorbents produced from sewage sludges were able to adsorb both the compounds considered here. Nevertheless, time required for reaching equilibrium, adsorptive capacity and fixed bed characteristic parameters were different for these two compounds. Methylene blue adsorption occurred faster than that of saphranine, and it was preferably adsorbed when treating binary solutions. It could be concluded that the sewage sludge-based activated carbons may be promising for dyes removal from aqueous streams.  相似文献

Biological wastes (sawdust, rice husk, coirpith and charcoal) and a naturally occurring mineral (vermiculite) have been tested for their effectiveness in removing Cr from tannery effluent through batch and column experiments. The adsorption capacities of the substrates were also evaluated using isotherm tests and computing distribution co-efficient. The sawdust exhibited a higher adsorption capacity (k = 1482 mgkg(-1)), followed by coirpith (k = 159 mgkg(-1)). The biosorbent and mineral vermiculite in columns were found very effective in removing Cr from tannery effluent. About 94% removal of Cr was achieved by a column of coirpith, and equally (93%) by a column containing a mixture of coirpith and vermiculite. This study showed that biological wastes are potential adsorbents of Cr, which could be successfully used to reduce the Cr concentrations in tannery effluent.  相似文献

Rapid urbanization has no doubt provided prosperity to inhabitants but on the other hand, it has caused severe environmental problems, particularly soil and water pollution. This research was done to determine the magnitude of metal and metalloid contamination at two sites in soil and a potential vegetable crop, sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) irrigated with wastewater in the region of Sargodha, Pakistan. The results demonstrated that the metal and metalloid levels in the soil samples were relatively below the respective maximum permissible limits of various metals analyzed. Transfer factor for metal contents was greater at site-II than that observed at site-I. Health risk was also worked out due to the inhabitants' intake of L. cylindrica irrigated with municipal wastewater. At both sites, the health risk index was greater than 1 due to Mn, Mo, Pb, Cd, Cu and As, and Ni at site-1 and Zn at site-II, whereas less than 1 due to Fe, Se, and Co. It was concluded that the dietary intake of L. cylindrica was not free of risk for inhabitants around the sampling sites. To reduce the health risk effects, it is suggested to treat the industrial wastes properly and phyto-extract the overload of heavy metals and metalloids from polluted sites. But with increase in vegetable consumption by the community the situation could worsen in the future.  相似文献

In this study, hard shell of apricot stones was selected from agricultural solid wastes to prepare effective and low cost adsorbent for the gold separation from gold-plating wastewater. Different adsorption parameters like adsorbent dose, particle size of activated carbon, pH and agitation speed of mixing on the gold adsorption were studied. The results showed that under the optimum operating conditions, more than 98% of gold was adsorbed onto activated carbon after only 3 h. The equilibrium adsorption data were well described by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Isotherms have been used to obtain thermodynamic parameters. Gold desorption studies were performed with aqueous solution mixture of sodium hydroxide and organic solvents at ambient temperatures. Quantitative recovery of gold ions is possible by this method. As hard shell of apricot stones is a discarded as waste from agricultural and food industries, the prepared activated carbon is expected to be an economical product for gold ion recovery from wastewater.  相似文献

The presence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in aquatic environments is a cause of concern, due to their toxicity, possible ecological impact and adverse effects in man. The release of these pollutants into receiving water bodies occurs primarily through the discharge of untreated wastewater and industrial effluents. Consequently, there is a need to remediate wastewater containing these compounds before its discharge. In this review, the occurrence of PFAAs in water streams is reviewed, with the aim of providing in-depth information on the harmful effects arising through exposure to these pollutants by both man and the environment. One viable strategy for the removal of PFAAs from wastewaters is adsorption. This technique is discussed in relation to a number of conventional adsorbents and they are compared with the behaviour of a more effective adsorbent, namely, carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In particular, various functionalization strategies can increase the efficiency of CNTs for the removal of PFAAs. Sorption of PFAAs onto CNTs demonstrates good removal efficiencies and equilibrium is attained faster than with conventional adsorbents. This is attributed to the inherent properties of CNTs, such as large surface area/porosity, and the ease with which new functional groups are introduced onto the walls of the tubes. The adsorption mechanism of PFAAs is primarily enhanced through electrostatic interactions; however, other intermolecular forces, such as hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions and ion-exchange, also play a role. This review aims at providing information on the occurrence and fate of PFAAs and the interactions involved in their removal from aqueous solutions by CNTs.  相似文献

Insect proteins have been proposed for human and animal food production. Safeguarding the health status of insects in mass rearing allows to obtain high-quality products and to avoid severe economic losses due to entomopathogens. Therefore, new strategies for preserving insect health must be implemented. Modulation of the insect immune system through the diet is one such strategy. We evaluated gene expression of two antimicrobial peptides (one defensin and one cecropin) in Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) reared on different diets. Analyses were performed on prepupae and 10-day-old larvae reared on cereal- and municipal organic waste-based diets and on only prepupae reared on a cereal-based diet supplemented with sunflower, corn, or soybean oil. The inclusion of sunflower oil at different points in the cereal-based diet was also evaluated. Moreover, diet-driven differences in the inhibitory activity of the hemolymph were tested against Escherichia coli DH5α and Micrococcus yunnanensis HI55 using diffusion assays in solid media. Results showed that a municipal organic waste-based diet produced a significant overexpression of antimicrobial peptides only in prepupae. Inclusion of vegetable oils caused an upregulation of at least one peptide, except for the corn oil. Higher expression of both genes was observed when sunflower oil was added 5 days before pupation. All hemolymph samples showed an inhibitory activity against bacteria colonies. Our results suggest that municipal organic waste-based diet and vegetable oil-added diet may successfully impact the immune system of H. illucens. Such alternatives may also exist for other species of economic interest.  相似文献

In life support systems, such as the MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support Alternative) project, developed by the European Space Agency, the aim is to understand and assemble artificial ecosystems for ensuring human subsistence in space. Fibrobacter succinogenes, an anaerobic bacterium, was used for the degradation of vegetable wastes produced in higher plants chambers, but the process does not allow the monitoring of biomass concentration and degradation rates. This study proposes a growth and a degradation monitoring technique using pressure measurements. First, volatile fatty acids (VFA) production was compared with biomass growth and with CO2 production. The experiments were carried out in batch and fed-batch processes on glucose and on vegetables. The results have shown that a link could be established between VFA production, degradation rate and gas pressure measurements. Thus, the pressure could be used both as a relevant variable for online evaluation of biomass growth and of degradation of complex vegetable wastes.  相似文献
