ABSTRACT. The interaction of photoperiod and temperature in the regulation of the induction and termination of the larval diapause of the Southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera), was examined. A population originating from south-eastern Missouri had critical daylengths for diapause induction of about 15h 5min (ecological threshold) and llh (physiological threshold). The ecological threshold was more stable than was the physiological threshold at temperatures lower than 25°C. Above 25°C the diapause response was suppressed. The insect appears to measure photoperiods in a stationary manner since a stepwise increase or decrease in photoperiod did not affect the incidence of diapause. In the critical region of the photoperiodic response curve, a higher incidence of diapause was found among females than among males. Females entered diapause later than did males, but resumed active development earlier than males. The rate of diapause development was more temperature dependent than was the rate of diapause induction, yet it was also clearly under photoperiodic control. The temperature coefficient (Q10) for this process was about 4. Several other factors including sex-linkage, age, and geographic adaptations are involved in controlling the rate of diapause development, even more so than they are in controlling diapause induction. In the laboratory, the intensity of diapause declined gradually without larvae being exposed to non-diapause inducing conditions. Incubation of field-collected larvae revealed that their sensitivity to diapause maintaining photoperiods had ended by January. Three generations of selection of a Mississippi population of D. grandiosella at 30°C and LD 12:12 led to the production of an essentially diapause-free strain and a diapause strain.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers have differing effects on southwestern corn borer (SWCB). Diatraea grandiosella Dyar, densities and damage to field corn, Zea mays L. Nitrogen fertilization of corn is associated with an increase in number of stalks infested and girdled by corn borers, while addition of P has the opposite effect. When combinations of N and P were applied, there were no significant differences in SWCB infestation or damage from plots receiving no fertilizer. The effect of combinations of N and P on SWCB were intermediate to either element alone.
Résumé Nous avons étudié les corrélations entre l'utilisation d'engrais azotés et phosphatés d'une part, l'infestation et l'alimentation de D. grandiosella sur maïs en champs d'autre part. Les formules d'engrais comparées étaient: pas d'engrais, 90 et 179 kg N/ha sans P, 45 et 90 kg P/ha sans N, et les combinaisons de ces deux teneurs en N et P.La contamination était plus élevée dans les lots ayant reçu de l'azote que dans ceux traités sans N, mais la présence d'azote n'a pas réduit le décapage des tiges et la verse dus à l'alimentatin larvaire. A l'inverse, les lots n'ayant reçu que du phosphore avaient des pourcentages plus faibles de tiges contaminées par D. grandiosella et ainsi décapées et versées, que ceux qui n'avaient pas reçu P. Il n'a pas eu de différences significatives dans les contaminations ou les dégats entre les lots ayant reçu différentes combinaisons de N et P, et les effets de ces combinaisons sur l'insecte étaient intermédiaires à ceux de N et P seuls.

A juvenile hormone analogue (methoprene) affected the circadian system controlling the adult eclosion rhythm in Diatraea grandiosella. The effect of methroprene was compared with those of photoperiod, sex and temperature. The phase difference (ψ̃rl) between the rhythm and the light-dark cycle and its variance increased as the photoperiod increased. Males emerged earlier than females. Higher temperatures induced earlier eclosion and reduced the variance. A parallel phase advance was observed in papae treated topically with methoprene. At the higher dose tested, methoprene induced earlier eclosion. The effect of methoprene was both dose and age dependent, with earlier application more effective. A dosage of 3.0 μg was lethal, however, if applied in the first 2 days of pupal stage. Synthetic juvenile hormone I had less effect than methoprene. Methoprene accelerated adult differentiation and emergence in both sexes.  相似文献

During this century the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), has extended its range from subtropical Mexico into the United States, below 38° N latitude. This maize‐feeding insect is now found from Arizona east to Alabama and north to Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. The species has adapted to the shorter growing seasons, longer summer daylengths, and lower winter temperatures present in the southern US than are present in Mexico. Life history, morphological, and behavioral traits were compared for populations of D. grandiosella from southeastern Missouri and southcentral Mexico and revealed differentiation in a suite of characters, some of which show clear adaptation to a northern climate while others are obviously less adaptive. An electrophoretic comparison of enzymes from D. grandiosella from the central portion of its range in the US and from a population from southcentral Mexico indicated that considerable genetic differentiation has occurred. Quantitative genetic studies should be undertaken on the original and dispersed populations to differentiate between those characters that have been directly responsible for the adaptation of this insect to northern maize‐growing regions and those that have changed merely due to genetic correlations with characters undergoing selection. Data from such studies, together with available information about the dispersal of this insect, should provide insight into factors regulating the movement of tropical insects into temperate regions.  相似文献

The cold-hardening capacity of field-collected larvae from southeast Missouri and laboratory-reared larvae of the southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar, was examined. Supercooling points of non-diapause and diapause larvae collected from maize plants grown in Missouri (36°30 N lat.) were ca.-7.0°C. The hemolymph melting points of diapause field larvae (-0.8°C) were significantly lower than those of non-diapause larvae collected in July (-0.5°C). The supercooling points of hemolymph from non-diapause and diapause field larvae ranged randomly from-10° to-18°C. Supercooling points of non-diapause laboratory larvae increased from-13° to-10°C prior to pupation, whereas those of diapause larvae increased similarly before the onset of diapause, but then decreased during diapause to ca.-17°C. No change in supercooling points or capacity to survive in the presence of ice was observed in diapause laboratory larvae acclimated at 4°C for 63 days. Laboratory and field larvae began to freeze at ca.-1.5°C in the presence of ice, but survived to several degrees below their melting points. The high supercooling points of field larvae appeared to be due to the presence of an environmental ice-nucleator. Although data for laboratory larvae indicate sufficiently low supercooling points to permit winter survival in southeastern Missouri, considerable larval mortality occurs in the field due to inoculative freezing and the presence of an ice-nucleator.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Daily rhythms controlling oviposition, egg-hatching and adult eclosion in the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata Rondani, were investigated. Eggs were laid only during the photophase of a LD 12:12 cycle, in two peaks. Under continuous light, this oviposition was considerably attenuated but not made immediately arrhythmic. Egg-hatching and adult eclosion both commenced just before dawn. Some feature of the scotophase during or immediately after black-head formation apparently acts as a signal for hatching. Eclosion was controlled by light but its timing in the field was modified by temperature. The last 2–3 days of the pupal period constituted the most sensitive stage, and light signals received during this period determined the time of eclosion. Ecological advantages of these rhythms to the shootfly are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Because cats with pontile lesions exhibit an abnormal behavior that is under photoperiodic control, and because circadian rhythms are implicated in photoperiodic control mechanisms, an effort was made to detect circadian rhythms in the cat. Cats were isolated from all extraneous stimuli in soundproof chambers for extended periods of time. Photocells were used to monitor activity, eating and drinking in different LD cycles, in constant light at two intensities, and in constant dark. Freerunning circadian rhythms were found in the constant conditions, and entrained nocturnal patterns occurred in most of the LD cycles. The higher intensities of ambient illumination disrupted the freerunning rhythms. The freerunning rhythms were always greater than 24 h, ranging from 24.2 to 25 h. Measurements of food intake of cats living in a large colony room, obtained by weighing the food, revealed that a nocturnal pattern of entrainment was not present in the majority of the cats. Instead, most cats in the colony exhibited a random pattern of eating throughout the light and dark period of the LD cycle. However, the variation among the cats in the colony was considerable, extending from nocturnal to diurnal patterns of eating. A diurnal pattern of human activity was present in the colony and may account for the disruption of a basic nocturnal pattern. The presence of circadian rhythms in the cat leads us to consider the coincidence models for photoperiodic induction as possible explanations of the photoperiodic control of the lesion‐induced abnormal behavior.  相似文献

We examined melatonin profiles of ruin lizards in different seasons (spring, summer, and autumn) under light:dark (LD) and concomitant responses when transferred to continuous darkness (DD) to determine the degree to which previously reported seasonally dependent effects of pinealectomy on locomotor behavior are related to melatonin secretion. The amplitude of the melatonin rhythm and the amount of melatonin produced over 24 h varied with season. In spring, the amount of melatonin produced was greatest and the amplitude 4- 5 times that found in summer or autumn. The degree of self-sustainment of the melatonin rhythm when transferred to DD also varied with season. In DD, melatonin levels remained high but did not exhibit circadian variation in spring. In summer, the melatonin profile persisted virtually unchanged in DD, showing the existence of a circadian rhythm. Finally, in the fall there was no circadian variation in DD and levels remained low. These responses correspond closely to previously reported effects of pinealectomy on locomotor behavior where there is little or no effect of pinealectomy in spring or fall but a profound alteration of locomotor behavior in summer. These results suggest that the seasonally dependent effects of pinealectomy on locomotor behavior in ruin lizards are related to a seasonally mediated change in the degree of self-sustainment of some component of the circadian pace-making system of which melatonin plays some role.  相似文献

The semilunar eclosion of the intertidal chironomid Clunio is controlled by a semilunar timing of pupation in combination with a daily timing of emergence. This results in reproductive activities of a laboratory population every 15 days at a distinct time of day (in nature mostly in correlation with the afternoon low water time on days with spring tides). The entrainment of the timing processes has been tested under various periods of the daily light-dark cycle in order to check the circadian organization of the timing mechanisms as suggested for the perception of the semilunar zeitgeber situation (a distinct phase relationship between the 24 h light-dark cycle and the 12.4 h tidal cycle recurring after every 15th light-dark cycle, named semimonthly zeitgeber cycle) as well as for the daily zeitgeber (the 24 h light-dark cycle). With respect to the semilunar timing, a strong entrainment was only possible in semimonthly zeitgeber cycles with light-dark cycle periods close to the 24-h day (light-dark cycles of 10:10 to 14:14). This limited circadian range of entrainment of an endogenous circasemilunar long-term rhythm (syn. oscillator) conforms with the hypothesis for a circadian clock component as an intrinsic part of the semilunar zeitgeber perception.The range of entrainment for the daily timing was obviously wider which may be discussed either in relation to a multioscillatory circadian organization of the midges or in relation to different coupling characteristics of one circadian oscillator during semilunar and daily timing.  相似文献

Three isolates of Beauveria bassiana were evaluated under laboratory conditions for pathogenicity against the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis. Dose-mortality regressions and nonparametric statistical analyses revealed significant differences in pathogenicity between isolates and across O. nubilalis instars. First instars were found to be the most susceptible of the five larval stages. Little difference was noted for instars 2, 3, and 5 within any of the three B. bassiana isolates. Fourth instar larvae were found to be the most tolerant in all cases.  相似文献

Excessive sucrose intake, known as fructose toxicity, leads to fatty liver, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. Circadian disorders also contribute to metabolic syndrome. Here, we investigated the effect of excessive sucrose intake on circadian rhythms of the small intestine, the main location of sucrose absorption, to elucidate a mechanism of sucrose-induced abnormal lipid metabolism. Male Wistar rats were fed control starch or high-sucrose diets for 4 weeks. High-sucrose diet-induced fatty liver and hypertriglyceridemia in rats. Amplitudes of PER1/2 expression oscillations in the small intestine were reduced by excessive sucrose, while gene expression of GLUT5 and gluconeogenic enzymes was enhanced. These changes would contribute to interfering in lipid homeostasis as well as adaptive responses to control fructose toxicity in rats.  相似文献

A Clock polymorphism T to C situated in the 3' untranslated region (3'-UTR) has been associated with human diurnal preference. At first, Clock 3111C had been reported as a marker for evening preference. However these data are controversial, and data both corroborating and denying them have been reported. This study hypothesizes that differences in Clock genotypes could be observed if extreme morning-type subjects were compared with extreme evening-type subjects, and the T3111C and T257G polymorphisms were studied. The possible relationship between both polymorphisms and delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS) was also investigated. An interesting and almost complete linkage disequilibrium between the polymorphisms T257G in the 5' UTR region and the T3111C in the 3' UTR region of the Clock gene is described. Almost always, a G in position 257 corresponds to a C in position 3111, and a T in position 257 corresponds to a T in position 3111. The possibility of an interaction of these two regions in the Clock messenger RNA structure that could affect gene expression was analyzed using computer software. The analyses did not reveal an interaction between those two regions, and it is unlikely that this full allele correspondence affects Clock gene expression. These results show that there is no association between either polymorphism T3111C or T257G in the Clock gene with diurnal preference or delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS). These controversial data could result from the possible effects of latitude and clock genes interaction on circadian phenotypes.  相似文献

The in vivo incubation period of Beauveria bassiana mycosis of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, was found to vary in response to temperature of incubation, level of initial exposure (dose), and the age of the host larvae. Incubation temperature was found to be the dominant factor affecting disease development within each of the host instars examined, while dose produced significant effects only in the early instars. A nonlinear regression model was used to construct three-dimensional stimulus-response surfaces for each host instar. This model has provided reasonable predictions of the disease incubation period when used within the temperature regimes found throughout New York State.  相似文献

Sex differences have been identified in a variety of circadian rhythms, including free-running rhythms, light-induced phase shifts, sleep patterns, hormonal fluctuations, and rates of reentrainment. In the precocial, diurnal rodent Octodon degus, sex differences have been found in length of free-running rhythm (tau), phase response curves, rates of reentrainment, and in the use of social cues to facilitate reentrainment. Although gonadal hormones primarily organize circadian rhythms during early development, adult gonadal hormones have activational properties on various aspects of circadian rhythms in a number of species examined. Gonadectomy of adult female O. degus did not influence tau, phase angle of entrainment, or activity patterns in previous experiments. The present experiment examined the role of gonadal hormones in adult male degus' circadian wheel-running rhythms. We predicted that male gonadal hormones would have an activational effect on some aspects of circadian rhythms, particularly those in which we see sex differences. Phase angles of entrainment, tau, length of the active period (alpha), maximum and mean activity levels, and activity amplitude were examined for intact and castrated males housed in LD 12:12. Responses to light pulses while housed in constant darkness (DD) were also compared. Castration had no significant effect on tau or light-induced phase shifts. However, castration significantly increased phase angle of entrainment and decreased activity levels. The data indicate that adult gonadal steroids are not responsible for the sex differences in endogenous circadian mechanisms of O. degus (tau, PRC), although they influence activity level and phase angle of entrainment. This is most likely due to masking properties of testosterone, similar to the activity-increasing effects of estrogen during estrus in O. degus females.  相似文献

The present study evaluated effects of green light emitting diode (LED) spectra on oxidative stress and circadian rhythms in goldfish exposed to various concentrations (0.25 and 0.5 mg/L) of NH3, under a white fluorescent bulb (control; simulated natural period) and green LED light. We measured mRNA expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) and mRNA expression of circadian rhythms (period 2), in addition to levels of plasma hydrogen peroxide, cortisol and melatonin. Damage to nuclear DNA was assessed using the comet assay. All stress indicators and melatonin were significantly lower in the green LED group than in the control group. With an increase in the concentration of ammonia, the observed effects became even more significant and generally increased with time. Comparatively, damage to the nuclear DNA was greater in the 0.5 mg/L NH3 group, and lower in the green LED group. The Period 2 mRNA expression reduced as increasing ammonia treatment but increased as green LED exposed. We have suggested that Green LED reduced levels of oxidative stress, which suggests an antioxidant effect against NH3 toxicity. Additionally, ammonia is affected the circadian rhythms and the green LED wavelength is able to regulate effectively the circadian rhythm.  相似文献

The locomotor activity of the millipede Glyphiulus cavernicolus (Spirostreptida), which occupies the deeper recesses of a cave, was monitored in light-dark (LD) cycles (12h light and 12h darkness), constant darkness (DD), and constant light (LL) conditions. These millipedes live inside the cave and are apparently never exposed to any periodic factors of the environment such as light-dark, temperature, and humidity cycles. The activity of a considerable fraction of these millipedes was found to show circadian rhythm, which entrained to a 12:12 LD cycle with maximum activity during the dark phase of the LD cycle. Under constant darkness (DD), 56.5% of the millipedes (n = 23) showed circadian rhythms, with average free-running period of 25.7h ± 3.3h (mean ± SD, range 22.3h to 35.0h). The remaining 43.5% of the millipedes, however, did not show any clear-cut rhythm. Under DD conditions following an exposure to LD cycles, 66.7% (n = 9) showed faint circadian rhythm, with average free-running period of 24.0h ± 0.8h (mean ± SD, range 22.9h to 25.2h). Under constant light (LL) conditions, only 2 millipedes of 11 showed free-running rhythms, with average period length of 33.3h ± 1.3h. The results suggest that these cave-dwelling millipedes still possess the capacity to measure time and respond to light and dark situations. ABSTRACT. Eclosion in Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) occurs near dawn. The rhythm of eclosion persists in both darkness and constant light of high intensity (490μW cm-2) with a period close to 24h. The sensitivity to light of the circadian clock controlling eclosion varies greatly according to the stage of the life cycle. During larval life the free running rhythm in darkness can be phase shifted by light pulses of 100μW cm-2 intensity, with the transition from a Type 1 phase response curve to a Type 0, occurring with pulses of between 1 and 8h. Extending the last light period of LD to 24 h followed by constant darkness resets the phase of the rhythm by 12h, a transition from constant light to constant darkness initiates rhythmicity in flies made arrhythmic by being reared from eggs collected from adults maintained in constant light. After pupariation, the rhythm is relatively insensitive to light. Rhythmicity is sometimes induced by a transition from constant light to constant darkness, but the phase of the rhythm is not shifted by extending the last light period of LD before entering constant darkness. Repeated LD cycles applied after pupariation initiate and entrain the rhythm.  相似文献
