The current distribution in a dielectric barrier discharge in atmospheric-pressure air at a natural humidity of 40–60% was studied experimentally with a time resolution of 200 ps. The experimental results are interpreted by means of numerically simulating the discharge electric circuit. The obtained results indicate that the discharge operating in the volumetric mode develops simultaneously over the entire transverse cross section of the discharge gap.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the structure of an ac surface discharge excited by a metal needle over a plane dielectric surface. A barrier corona discharge was ignited in atmospheric-pressure argon at frequencies of the applied sinusoidal voltage from 50 Hz to 30 kHz. In experiments, the area of a dielectric covered with the discharge plasma increased with applied voltage. The discharge structure in diffuse and streamer modes was recorded using a digital camera and a high-speed image tube operating in a frame mode. It is found that, in the positive and negative half-periods of the applied voltage, the structure of the surface discharge is substantially different. The statistical characteristics of the branching surface streamers in the positive and negative half-periods are determined as functions of the voltage frequency. The most intense lines in the emission spectrum of the barrier corona are determined for both half-periods. The correlation between the dynamics of the emission intensity and the dynamics of the discharge current and voltage is investigated.  相似文献

The properties of a surface barrier discharge in atmospheric-pressure air at different polarities of applied voltage were studied experimentally. The influence of the voltage polarity on the spatial structure of the discharge and the electric field in the discharge plasma was determined by means of spectroscopic measurements. It is found that the energy deposited in the discharge does not depend on the voltage polarity and that discharges of positive polarity are more homogenous and the electric fields in them are higher.  相似文献

Energy exchange between an electron beam and plasma during a beam-plasma discharge in a closed cavity excited by the electron beam is analyzed using computer simulations by the KARAT code. A method allowing one to analyze the beam-plasma interaction in the quasi-steady stage of the discharge is proposed. Qualitative characteristics of energy exchange (such as beam energy losses and the energy distributions of beam electrons and plasma particles leaving the discharge) both during spontaneous discharge excitation and in the presence of initial beam modulation by regular or noiselike signals are determined. The results obtained enable one to estimate the energy characteristics of a plasma processing reactor based on a beam-plasma discharge.  相似文献

Like other cnidarians, the freshwater organism Hydra is characterized by the possession of cnidocytes (stinging cells). Most cnidocytes are located on hydra tentacles, where they are organized along with sensory cells and ganglion cells into battery complexes. The function of the battery complexes is to integrate multiple types of stimuli for the regulation of cnidocyte discharge. The molecular mechanisms controlling the discharge of cnidocytes are not yet fully understood, but it is known that discharge depends on extracellular Ca2+ and that mechanically induced cnidocyte discharge can be enhanced by the presence of prey extracts and other chemicals. Experiments in this paper show that a PKD2 (polycystin 2) transient receptor potential (TRP) channel is expressed in hydra tentacles and bases. PKD2 (TRPP) channels belong to the TRP channel superfamily and are non-selective Ca2+ channels involved in the transduction of both mechanical and chemical stimuli in other organisms. Non-specific PKD2 channel inhibitors Neo (neomycin) and Gd3+ (gadolinium) inhibit both prey capture and cnidocyte discharge in hydra. The PKD2 activator Trip (triptolide) enhances cnidocyte discharge in both starved and satiated hydra and reduces the inhibition of cnidocyte discharge caused by Neo. PKD1 and 2 proteins are known to act together to transduce mechanical and chemical stimuli; in situ hybridization experiments show that a PKD1 gene is expressed in hydra tentacles and bases, suggesting that polycystins play a direct or indirect role in cnidocyte discharge.  相似文献

The results of the experimental studies of a spark discharge in the point-to-plane geometry in argon at a discharge current limited by a large ballast resistor are presented. A microstructure of a low-current spark discharge representing a formation consisting of a set of micron-size current filaments inside a spark current channel has been revealed.  相似文献

A model is developed for simulating a low-current moderate-pressure RF discharge with allowance for such characteristic discharge properties as the existence of two sheaths near both electrodes throughout the RF field period; the formation of an electron cloud at the sheath boundary that periodically fills the sheath and leaves it, depending on the phase of the applied RF voltage; the production by the sheath electrons of metastable gas particles that interact with the cloud electrons during subsequent field periods, followed by the excitation of metastable states to the emitting levels; the formation of a sheath in a low-current RF discharge due to the overlap of the secondary electron avalanches triggered by electron photoemission from the electrode surface; and the conditions under which the sheath electrons penetrate into the positive column and accumulate there, which makes, thereby making a low-current RF discharge similar to a non-self-sustained discharge. The parameters of the sheath in a low-current RF discharge are determined by the conditions under which the electron photoemission current from the electrode surface in the sheath is self-sustaining and, like the parameters of the positive discharge column, depend on the sort of gas, the gas pressure, the frequency of the applied RF field, and the interelectrode distance. The results of calculating the parameters of the sheath and column of a low-current RF discharge for nitrogen and helium at different pressures, as well as for different field frequencies and interelectrode distances, are presented and are compared with the experimental data.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of a pulsating discharge produced by a dc power source in subsonic and supersonic cold (T = 150–300 K) air flows at static air pressures in the flow of 40–760 Torr. Two modes of pulsating discharge were implemented experimentally: without and with (from one to five) intermediate breakdowns. The discharge pulsation frequency, the maximum attainable voltage across the discharge gap, the length of the plasma channel, and the electric field in the discharge plasma were studied as functions of the air flow velocity and discharge current.  相似文献

Nonstationary processes in atmospheric-pressure glow discharge manifest themselves in spontaneous transitions from the normal glow discharge into a spark. In the experiments, both so-called completed transitions in which a highly conductive constricted channel arises and incomplete transitions accompanied by the formation of a diffuse channel are observed. A model of the positive column of a discharge in air is elaborated that allows one to interpret specific features of the discharge both in the stationary stage and during its transition into a spark and makes it possible to calculate the characteristic oscillatory current waveforms for completed transitions into a spark and aperiodic ones for incomplete transitions. The calculated parameters of the positive column in the glow discharge mode agree well with experiment. Data on the densities of the most abundant species generated in the discharge (such as atomic oxygen, metastable nitrogen molecules, ozone, nitrogen oxides, and negative oxygen ions) are presented.  相似文献

The parameters of the plasma of a microwave electrode discharge in hydrogen at pressures of 1–8 torr and incident powers of 20–80 W are measured by the so-called “relative intensity” method. The method allows one to determine the electron density and electric field in plasma by measuring the relative intensities of the Hα, Hβ, and 763.5-nm Ar line emission and calculating the electron-impact rate constants from the homogeneous Boltzmann equation. The measurements show that there are regions in the discharge where the electron density is higher (a bright electrode sheath) and lower (a spherical region) than the critical density for the frequency 2.45 GHz (ncr~7×1010 cm?3). Inside the spherical region, the electric field varies slightly over the radius and the electron density increases as the discharge boundary is approached. The observed discharge structure can be attributed to the presence of a self-sustained discharge zone (electrode sheath); a non-self-sustained discharge zone (spherical region); and a decaying plasma region, which is separated from the active discharge zone by an electric double layer.  相似文献

A physical model of a copper vapor laser pumped by a pulse-periodic inductive (electrodeless) discharge is considered. The feasibility of efficient laser pumping by an inductive discharge and reaching high output parameters comparable to those of conventional copper vapor lasers pumped by a longitudinal electrode discharge is demonstrated. The design and physical features of an inductive copper vapor laser with an annular working volume are discussed.  相似文献

A new type of beam discharge, i.e., beam discharge with a distributed virtual cathode (VC) is proposed and considered by numerical simulation. The discharge is established during counter motion of high-current electron beams in a gas-filled equipotential cavity and is characterized by a state of hot dense electron plasma of primary electrons. The discharge temporal dynamics is studied. It is shown that the VC lifetime depends linearly from this sum in a wide range of the sum of beam currents, from the boundary current of two-beam instability to the critical current of Pierce instability. Generation of nonlinear electrostatic structures shaped as phase bubbles in the discharge is detected, and their dynamics is studied. The parameters are determined, at which the multiple coexistence of phase bubbles and their coalescence during collisions is observed.  相似文献

Results of two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of a surface glow discharge operating at pressures of 0.2–0.5 Torr in a nitrogen flow propagating with a velocity of 1000 m/s in the presence of external ionization are presented. The effect of the external ionization rate on discharge operation is analyzed. The current-voltage characteristics of the discharge are calculated for different intensities of external ionization in both the presence and absence of secondary electron emission from the cathode. The discharge structure and plasma parameters in the vicinity of the loaded electrode are considered. It is shown that, when the discharge operates at the expense of secondary emission from the cathode, the discharge current and cathode sheath configuration are insensitive to external ionization. It is also demonstrated that, even at a high rate of external ionization, the discharge operates due to secondary emission from the cathode.  相似文献

A one-dimensional hydrodynamic model of a dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) in pure chlorine is developed, and the properties of the discharge are modeled. The discharge is excited in an 8-mm-long discharge gap between 2-mm-thick dielectric quartz layers covering metal electrodes. The DBD spatiotemporal characteristics at gas pressures of 15–100 Torr are modeled for the case in which a 100-kHz harmonic voltage with an amplitude of 8 kV is applied to the electrodes. The average power density deposited in the discharge over one voltage period is 2.5–5.8 W/cm3. It is shown that ions and electrons absorb about 95 and 5% of the discharge power, respectively. In this case, from 67 to 97% of the power absorbed by electrons is spent on the dissociation and ionization of Cl2 molecules. Two phases can be distinguished in the discharge dynamics: the active (multispike) phase, which follows the breakdown of the discharge gap, and the passive phase. The active phase is characterized by the presence of multiple current spikes, a relatively high current, small surface charge density on the dielectrics, and large voltage drop across the discharge gap. The passive phase (with no current spikes) is characterized by a low current, large surface charge density on the dielectrics, and small voltage drop across the discharge gap. The peak current density in the spikes at all pressures is about 4 mA/cm2. In the multispike phase, there are distinct space charge sheaths with thicknesses of 1.5–1.8 mm and a mean electron energy of 4.3–7 eV and the central region of quasineutral plasma with a weak electric field and a mean electron energy of 0.8–3 eV. The degree of ionization of chlorine molecules in the discharge is ~0.02% at a pressure of 15 Torr and ~0.01% at 100 Torr. The DBD plasma is electronegative due to the fast attachment of electrons to chlorine atoms: e + Cl2 → Cl + Cl. The most abundant charged particles are Cl 2 + and Cl? ions, and the degree of ionization during current spikes in the active phase is (4.1–5.5) × 10–7. The mechanism of discharge sustainment is analyzed. The appearance of a series of current spikes in the active phase of the discharge is explained.  相似文献

A set of spectrometers that allow simultaneous measurements of the spectra of pulsed X-ray and electron emission from a micropinch discharge in a wide energy range (1.5?C500 keV) is described. The experimental results of the study of electron and X-ray spectra of micropinch discharge plasma are discussed. The mechanism for the formation of hard X-rays is caused by acceleration processes in micropinch discharge plasma.  相似文献

With the proper stabilization of a negative corona, it is possible to increase the threshold current at which the corona discharge in the point-plane gap in air transforms into a spark. Then, in the current range corresponding to the transition region between the corona discharge and the spark, a new type of discharge arises—an atmospheric-pressure diffuse glow discharge. The transformation of the negative corona into a glow discharge and then into a spark is accompanied by the rearrangement of the discharge structure. The experiments show that, as the corona current increases, the radial current profile at the anode shrinks and the glow diameter near the anode increases. The radial profiles of the current and the corona glow during the transition to a glow discharge are measured. The longitudinal structure of the corona is computed using a 1.5-dimensional model that, unlike the other available models, includes gas ionization in the drift region of the corona. The experimental data are used to determine the effective cross section of the current channel at the anode. The radial glow profile near the anode is calculated using the measured current profile and assuming that the field profile is parabolic.  相似文献

The excitation of oscillations in a discharge with negative differential conductivity is studied experimentally. The possibility is demonstrated of amplifying oscillations in the cathode dark space at frequencies close to the electron plasma frequency of the positive-column plasma. The phase velocities of waves at these frequencies are determined. When the waves pass from the cathode dark space to the discharge positive column, their phase velocities decrease; the closer the frequency is to the electron plasma frequency, the more pronounced the decrease in the phase velocity. As the intensity of oscillations increases, the discharge becomes non-steady-state. This is confirmed by the time evolution of the current-voltage characteristic. The shape of the current-voltage characteristic, its splitting, and the rate at which it varies depend on the input RF power. The decrease in the cathode dark space indicates that the ionization processes in the discharge are strongly influenced by electron plasma oscillations excited due to the collective interaction of the electron beam formed at the cathode with the discharge plasma. It is these processes that determine the maximum values of both the frequency of the excited oscillations and the power that can be withdrawn from the discharge.  相似文献

A surface discharge in a system where metal electrodes in the form of a series of parallel strips are positioned on the dielectric surface is studied. Analytical formulas for calculating the spatial distribution of the potential and the electric field in a discharge cell are derived. It is shown that the geometry of the metal electrodes should be taken into account (along with physical and chemical characteristics of the dielectric, the voltage applied to the electrodes, and other parameters of the system) for generation of the electric field with optimal configuration in the discharge cell. The obtained results are also applicable for analysis of discharge cells with a coplanar barrier discharge where metal electrodes are positioned in the dielectric at small depths. The results are of interest since a barrier discharge is one of the efficient methods for generating non-equilibrium plasma at high pressures for a variety of technological applications.  相似文献

Results from experimental studies of an electric discharge operating between a solid anode and an electrolytic cathode in a wide pressure range are presented. Specific features of the discharge ignition and discharge shape and peculiarities the structure of cathode spots on the electrolyte surface and anode spots on the surface of the solid electrode are revealed. The dependences of the current density on the electrolytic cathode and metal anode on the total current are measured, and the spatial distribution of the electric field is determined. A transition of a glow discharge into a multichannel discharge is investigated. The experimental data on the frequency and amplitude of the current and voltage pulsations are presented. Requirements for the maintenance of an electric discharge with an electrolytic cathode are formulated using the obtained experimental results.  相似文献

The discharge of nematocytes, the stinging cells of Coelenterata, is a poorly understood phenomenon. In particular, little is known about the chemical stimuli that trigger the discharge. In this paper, we show that thiols are able to initiate the nematocyst discharge in isolated nematocytes. Among the thiols tested, reduced glutathione and cysteine were found to be the most effective. The effect of glutathione was likely two-fold: it formed mixed disulfides with membrane thiols, as shown by the ability of the mercapto-blocking reagent iodoacetamide to abolish its action; and it bound to the membrane through the glutamate moiety, as demonstrated by competitive experiments with free glutamate. Glutathione triggered the discharge at concentrations higher than those sufficient to activate the feeding response of Coelenterates. However, our results demonstrate for the first time that the modification of membrane thiols by selective agents may be a key event in the discharge of nematocytes.  相似文献
