Pulmonary carbon monoxide (CO) excretion rates (VeCO) were 50% greater, on average, in Bolivian squirrel monkeys (BoSMs) which exhibit a unique fasting hyperbilirubinemia (FH), than in fasted control Brazilian squirrel monkeys (BrSMs). Since the catabolism of heme produces equimolar amounts of CO and bilirubin, the increased VeCOs are consistent with concurrent increases in endogenous bilirubin production rates. Tin-protoporphyrin, a competitive inhibitor of heme oxygenase, significantly decreased both the VeCO and serum bilirubin level in fasted BoSMs. Overproduction of bilirubin may be responsible in part for the marked FH in BoSMs. 相似文献

Bolivian squirrel monkeys, unlike those of Brazilian origin, exhibit a marked fasting hyperbilirubinemia (FH) similar to that observed in Gilbert's syndrome in man. Since no delays in the hepatic clearance of sulfobromophthalein or indocyanine green are present, the Bolivian monkey appears to be similar to Gilbert's type I syndrome. FH can be significantly decreased by either phenobarbital or tin-protoporphyrin pretreatment. Nicotinic acid-induced hyperbilirubinemia and delayed tolbutamide clearance were not observed as in the human syndrome. 相似文献

Median corpuscular fragility of erythrocytes does not differ significantly between fed and fasted Bolivian and Brazilian squirrel monkeys and are similar to values reported in humans and rhesus monkeys. This report further confirms that the fasting hyperbilirubinemia present only in Bolivian squirrel monkeys with a Gilbert-like syndrome is not due to an increased fragility of erythrocytes and should be classified as a nonhemolytic hyperbilirubinemia. 相似文献

Serial measurements of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) were used to describe the ovarian cycle of the Bolivian squirrel monkey. Group-caged, sexually mature female squirrel monkeys, housed with males, were sampled daily between 0900 and 1100 hr. Sampling was carried out during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons, for periods of 19–20 days from September 1981 to May 1982. Seasonal differences in serum concentrations of E2 and P were found with low levels of E2 and P and an absence of preovulatory surges of E2 during the nonbreeding season. This pattern was also observed in some animals during the breeding season. An abrupt increase in serum P concentrations in December appeared to signal the onset of cycling. Cycling animals had well-defined peaks of E2 (450–9,500 pg/ml) followed by increasing levels of P, which were >200 ng/ml in some animals. After the breeding season, E2 and P levels returned to their initially low levels. Levels of both steroids in cycling animals were higher than those reported for other primates and for previous measurements made in squirrel monkeys. Cycle length based on time interval between consecutive E2 peaks varied from 6–12 days. 相似文献

The time between administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and follicle aspiration was analyzed for alterations in [3H]uridine incorporation [as an indicator of relative synthesis of ribonucleic acid (RNA)] of oocytes from squirrel monkeys and humans. There was a significant decline in both the uptake and incorporation of [3H]uridine in squirrel monkey oocytes by 36 hr following hCG administration to the animals, as compared with 16 hr after hCG. Similarly, RNA synthesis diminished in oocytes collected 35 hr after hCG in humans, as compared with 12 hr after hCG. This reduction in RNA synthesis of maturing oocytes is similar to that of other mammalian species. This provides evidence for an increased interval between hCG administration and follicle aspiration in order to recover mature oocytes for in vitro fertilization studies. 相似文献

This study was planned to evaluate the poor reproductive performance of aged squirrel monkeys in a self-sustaining breeding colony. Two groups of monkeys aged 6–8 years (Group 1), and >12 years (Group 2) were evaluated. During the midbreeding season, daily blood samples were obtained for a period of 35 days from 10 animals in each group. Blood samples were assayed for serum estradiol (E), progesterone (P), and bioassayable luteinizing hormone (bio-LH) concentrations and the data were analyzed by ANOVA (analysis of variance). Bio-LH surges were less frequent in the aged breeders (Group 2). Total P output during periovulatory period (day ?;3 to day + 3) and the total P output during the luteal phases of the estrus cycles were significantly lower in aged squirrel monkeys (Group 2, P < 0.003). Although E peaks occurred less frequently in Group 2, they had higher concentrations as compared to Group 1 (P < 0.003). Cumulative periovulatory and luteal phase E levels did not differ between the two groups. The reduction in P output in aged squirrel monkeys may interfere with proper implantation, thus contributing to the lower pregnancy rate observed in this age group. The decreased frequency of bio-LH surges indicated less frequent ovulations in the aged animals which may further impair reproduction with aging. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

To assess diurnal fluctuations of serum androgens and cortisol in adult male Bolivian squirrel monkeys, these steroids were measured at predetermined times (0300, 0900, and 2300 hours) during two separate 24-hour periods in the breeding season (January 1983 and late November 1983). A significant diurnal change in serum cortisol was noted, with a nadir of 99.9 ± 11.9 μg/dl (x? ± SEM) at 2300 hours and a peak of 168.9 ± 7.8 μg/dl at 0900 hours. Conversely, a nadir in serum testosterone was noted at 0900 hours (117 ± 26.5 ng/ml) increasing to a peak of 328.5 ± 57.9 ng/ml at 0300 hours. Serum androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone followed a pattern similar to testosterone, with a serum androstenedione (176.4 ± 34.9 ng/ml) and dehydroepiandrosterone (11.7 + 1.8 ng/ml) nadir at 0900 hours and a plasma androstenedione (494.5 ± 55.4 ng/ml) and dehydroepiandrosterone (32.5 ± 4.1 ng/ml) peak at 0300 hours. Parallel changes of testosterone, androstenedione, and dehydroepiandrosterone suggest a significant contribution of all three androgens from a common site, the testes. In contrast to old world primates and humans, serum androstenedione levels exceeded serum testosterone levels in this species. 相似文献

Six infant squirrel monkeys were reared in social isolation. They responded differentially to playbacks of two species-specific alarm calls. The reaction to the alarm peep, the warning call to bird predators, was a prompt flight to the mother surrogate and essentially resembled the respective behavior of mother-reared infants. The responses to yapping, the alarm call to terrestrial predators, were less clear-cut and habituated soon. However, when yapping was played back in connection with the presentation of a reference object, both subjects tested in this way clearly avoided the object and preferred contact with the mother surrogate while they thoroughly explored an object presented with a control tone. From this it can be concluded that the perception of both alarm calls is innate. In addition, the method of behavior-contingent playback of vocalizations simulates the learning process by which the visual perception of terrestrial predators of the habitat is acquired. 相似文献

Serum IgG and IgM levels were measured in domestically bred squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) ranging in age from 0 days to 42 months, as well as in adult squirrel monkeys from the wild estimated to be 60 months or older. The results indicated that the transplacental transfer of IgG occurs in the squirrel monkey but the transferability is lower in the squirrel monkey than in the cynomolgus monkey. Many mammals coincide their reproductive activities with factors such as ambient temperature, rainfall, and food availability. In primates that invest immediate food intake into reproduction, the periods of maximum fruit production often coincide with the peak of lactation (to maximize maternal survival) or the occurrence of weaning (to maximize infant survival). This study investigates the relationship between reproductive periods and the availability of ripe fruit in the habitat of a population of wild squirrel monkeys (Saimiri collinsi) in Amazonian Brazil. We combine data from several years (2002–2003; 2011–2015) during which we followed the monkeys and quantified the occurrence of matings, gestations, births, and the number of lactating females. We also collected rainfall and plant phenological data for 24 months. Our results confirm that reproductive events are highly seasonal in S. collinsi. The period of weaning corresponded to the peak in the abundance of ripe fruits consumed by the monkeys. This indicates that the period of infant nutritional independence is optimally timed to coincide with periods of greater food production in this habitat. We suggest that seasonal breeding in these primates does not necessarily reduce maternal energetic stress, but likely improves infant survivorship. 相似文献

The first, or Roman type, contains Saimiri boliviensis of upper Amazonia south of the Rio Marañón-Amazonas, with two subspecies of which S. boliviensis peruviensis is described as new. The second group, or Gothic type, contains three species: Saimiri sciureus with four subspecies distributed over much of tropical South America, Saimiri ustus of Brazil between the south bank Amazonian Rios Purús and Xingu, and S. oerstedi isolated on a Pacific coastal area straddling Costa Rica and Panamá. The geographic range of S. sciureus overlaps parts of those of S. ustus and S. boliviensis. Incomplete karyotypic data indicate that the diploid number of chromosomes for the genus is 44. Geographic variation is characterized by reduction from seven to six or five paired acrocentric autosomes through pericentric inversion with reciprocal increase in number of paired submetacentric or subtelocentric autosomes. Geographic distribution, behavior, sexual dimorphism including dichromatism, and hybridization are discussed. Ventral guide hairs for orientation of subprecocial newborn toward the maternal mammae are described. Distinguishing characters of species and subspecies are provided in a key. This study was designed to measure the effects of variations in the length of pretreatment with a GnRH agonist, leuprolide acetate (LA), on subsequent follicular development and ovulation. The hypothesis was that the duration of LA suppression of pituitary function does not adversely affect ovarian response to standardized ovulation induction protocols in squirrel monkeys. The first phase determined the dose and duration of LA needed to achieve a hypogonadal state. One of two groups received daily subcutaneous injections of 50 μg of LA. The other received a single injection of 175 μg of a depot suspension of LA. Sera were assayed for estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P). E2 and P levels increased 2‐ to 5‐fold with peak levels on days 4 and 7, respectively. Suppression of steroid levels took 10 to 15 days in the LA‐treated group. Depot‐LA did not effectively suppress steroid production. After suppression, females receiving daily LA received five daily injections of hMG to stimulate follicular development. E2 and P increased in these animals. These results suggest that cycling squirrel monkeys have P‐secreting capacity throughout the cycle. This may explain how the squirrel monkey is able to accommodate both a short (4–5 day) luteal phase of their 9 day cycle and implantation from 5 to 7 days after ovulation. A second study compared exogenous follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to endogenous gonadotropins released as a response to LA in ovulation induction. Steroid production and hCG‐induced ovulation were assessed. LA treatment was compared to a standard ovulation induction protocol by using a randomized cross‐over measures design. There were no differences in E2 and P levels in response to dosages of either LA or hMG. The ovulatory response following LA treatment was not significantly greater than that using FSH. The number of animals with unovulated, large follicles was greater on the FSH protocol (12/18) compared to the LA protocol (3/18). Thus, a single injection of a depot preparation of LA is sufficient to stimulate follicular development and ovulation when followed by an hCG injection. Based on this observation and the data on unovulated large follicles, it is suggested that the ovary responds more readily to endogenous gonadotropins released by LA than to exogenous FSH. Am. J. Adult, laboratory-bred squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) previously infected with either Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis or L. b. panamensis were challenge infected with blood-form trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi (Brazil strain). Monkeys previously infected with T. cruzi were challenged with stationary phase promastigote forms of L. b. braziliensis. Monkeys were examined during the course of challenge for evidence of infection, electrocardiographic alterations and parasite-specific antibody responses. T. cruzi epimastigotes were cultured from the blood of monkeys up to 3 months after challenge with this parasite. Unulcerated cutaneous lesions appeared and persisted in monkeys challenged with L. b. braziliensis. The formation of satellite lesions was observed in one monkey. Increased QRS intervals were not observed in T. cruzi challenged monkeys without prior cardiac irregularities and QRS left axis shifts were observed in only two of these monkeys. Elevated titers of parasite binding IgM and IgG specific for both T. cruzi and L. braziliensis were observed in all monkeys following challenge. These results indicate that prior infection with T. cruzi or L. braziliensis does not protect against heterologous challenge infection with these organisms. However, prior infection with Leishmania parasites may provide some protection against chagasic cardiopathies. 相似文献
