The organisation of the coastal rocky fish community of Lebanon was investigated for the first time, using visual censuses. A total of 62 fish species were recorded between the surface and 32 m depth, 8 species being Red Sea migrants. Species richness and fish abundance were positively correlated first with substrate complexity and second with depth. The trophic structure of the community was dominated by diurnal zooplanktivores (Chromis chromis, Oblada melanura and Spicara smaris) and mesocarnivores 1 (Coris julis and Thalassoma pavo), and did not vary significantly with depth. The Lessepsian migrants represented 13% of the species richness and 19% of the total abundance of individuals. They dominated among herbivores, nocturnal zooplanktivores and macrocarnivores. The Lessepsian Siganus luridus and S. rivulatus (Siganidae), Pempheris vanicolensis (Pempheridae) and Sargocentron rubrum (Holocentridae) were now among the most common fish species on the Lebanese rocky coast. Lessepsian fish species displayed either similar ecological niches in the Red Sea and in the Levantine basin (P. vanicolensis, S. rubrum) or an enlargement of their depth distribution towards deeper waters in their new environment (S. luridus, S. rivulatus). This study will serve as a baseline for future studies as eastern Mediterranean communities are subjected to a steady increase in Red Sea migrant species.  相似文献

Information on the initial stages of dispersal and settlement are of great interest in understanding the dynamics of biological invasions and in designing management responses. A newly settled population of the Lessepsian rabbitfish migrant Siganus luridus, that arrived in Linosa Island (Sicily Strait) in 2000, offered a unique opportunity to examine the genetic variability of the early phase of invasion and the starting point to test genetic variation within and between colonist and source populations.Demographics and dynamic aspects of S. luridus in the Mediterranean were evaluated by using phylogeographic and demographic (coalescent) methods based on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial control region. Sequences from 95 S. luridus, 25 Siganus rivulatus, and one of Siganus (Lo) vulpinus and S. doliatus were used. Samples were collected in one locality in the Red Sea (Eilat) and three localities in the Mediterranean (Israel, Greece and Linosa, Italy). Data showed (for the first time in a Lessepsian migrant) a lowering of the genetic diversity of the invading population (Mediterranean) (haplotype diversity 0.879, nucleotide diversity 0.592) compared to the parental one (Red Sea) (haplotype diversity 0.978, nucleotide diversity 0.958).Within the Mediterranean populations, there was no pattern of regional separation and mitochondrial diversity appeared to be preserved during the Linosa colonization, with no traces of founder events. Such evidence agrees with the idea that Lessepsian migration involves many individuals from its earliest stages.  相似文献

The European green crab, Carcinus maenas, is an introduced marine predator established on the west coast of North America. We conducted laboratory experiments on the host specificity of a natural enemy of the green crab, the parasitic barnacle Sacculina carcini, to provide information on the safety of its use as a possible biological control agent. Four species of non-target, native California crabs (Hemigrapsus oregonensis, H. nudus, Pachygrapsus crassipes and Cancer magister) were exposed to infective larvae of S. carcini. Settlement by S. carcini on the four native species ranged from 33 to 53%, compared to 79% for green crabs. Overall, cyprid larvae tended to settle in higher numbers on individual green crabs than on either C. magister or H. oregonensis. However, for C. magister this difference was significant for soft-shelled, but not hard-shelled individuals. Up to 29% of the native crabs arrested early infections by melanizing the rootlets of the parasite. Most native and green crabs settled on by S. carcini became infected, especially when settled on by >3 cyprids. Infected green crabs died at more than twice the rate of uninfected green crabs. In contrast to green crabs, all infected native crabs died without producing an externa (reproductive sac). At high settlement intensities, infected native crabs frequently exhibited neurological symptoms (twitching, loss of movement) before death. These results indicate that use of S. carcini as a biological control agent could result in the death of native crabs. The magnitude of this effect would be proportional to the density of infected green crabs in the environment and the probability that cyprids would contact native crabs in the wild. Potential benefits of biological control should be assessed in relation to these potential non-target effects.  相似文献

Synopsis FourStegastes species were visually censused to determine seasonality and size of juvelines at settlement as well as their survival and growth rates. The census was performed weekly from September 1987 to March 1991 in southwest Puerto Rico. All species had a settlement pulse during September–October. The threespot damselfish,S. planifrons, appeared to have the strongest site fidelity, longest survivorship and slowest growth of the four species. The cocoa damselfish,S. variabilis, and the bicolor damselfish,S. partitus, had similar patterns of site fidelity, life expectancy and growth rates, but these two species differed in being the most and least abundant, respectively. The beaugregory,S. leucostictus, occurred second in abundance but included the least number of new settlers. This species displayed poor site fidelity, a characteristic which probably influenced calculations indicating poor survivorship, life expectancy and growth relative to its congeners. Similarities and differences in these characteristics, as well as in the habitat preferences displayed by these four fishes, may contribute to their abilities to coexist in the same area.  相似文献

Degraded reefs with a high abundance of macroalgae usually also have low densities of coral recruits. Few studies, however, have examined whether these algae affect coral larval settlement. This study demonstrates, experimentally, that larvae of the Caribbean coral Favia fragrum can settle on the green alga Halimeda opuntia even when another substrate more suitable for settlement is present. Larval settlement onto experimental substrates was quantified under three treatments: rubble only, rubble plus plastic algal mimic, and rubble plus live H. opuntia. Similar total larval settlement was observed in all treatments. No larvae settled on the algal mimic, but total settlement was similar on the rubble in the first two treatments, showing that the rubble alone offered sufficient substrate for high settlement success. About half the larvae in the live algal treatment settled on H. opuntia instead of on the rubble, showing that larvae did not reject this substrate as they did the algal mimic. This result raises the possibility that corals will settle on some macroalgae when their abundance is high. Most macroalgae, including H. opuntia, are ephemeral substrates unsuitable for post-settlement survival. Such unexpected settlement may therefore have significant consequences for coral recruitment success on algal-dominated reefs.  相似文献

Age and growth of Lessepsian rabbitfish from the eastern Mediterranean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rabbitfish are currently an important component of the eastern Mediterranean inshore fishery. This study estimates age and calculates growth of Siganus rivulatus and S. luridus from the Lebanese coastal waters based on otolith analysis and compares results with available data from different geographical locations. Annual periodicity of alternating zones was confirmed for S. rivulatus, in which one opaque and one translucent zone were observed to deposit each year, but not for S. luridus. Both species appear to have a maximum lifespan of 6 years. The von Bertalanffy growth functions were Lt = 318.9(1 ? e?0.225(t+1.307)) for S. rivulatus and Lt = 274.9(1 ? e?0.330(t+1.039)) for S. luridus and length–weight relationships were estimated as for S. rivulatus and for S. luridus. The rabbitfish catches of the Lebanese fishery consist mainly of individuals which have not reached their first maturity. Rabbitfish from the eastern Mediterranean coastal waters appear to grow rapidly most of the year and are thus able to maintain relatively important population size despite intensive fishing pressure.  相似文献

Aspects of the life cycle of the hydroid Sertularia cupressina were monitored over a period of 2 y using settlement panels. The reproductive period, determined by the presence of acrocysts and larval settlement, was November to January. Recently settled hydroids were more abundant on horizontal upward facing surfaces than on horizontal downward facing or vertical surfaces. The spatial dispersal of settlers was random. S. cupressina was a conspicuous and persistent component of fouling communities developing on both upward facing and vertical panels over 2 y. Following settlement in winter 1979–80, hydrocauli reached their greatest height between November 1980 and April 1981, but fouling and breakage of stems occurred during spring 1981. Regeneration from the tips of broken stems and from hydrorhizae occurred in June and July 1981.  相似文献

The microstructure of otoliths was used to examine the relationship among timing of parturition, duration of planktonic stage, and temporal patterns of settlement in young-of-the-year (YOY) Sebastes inermis collected during the settlement seasons of 1998–2001 in a seagrass bed at the northwestern coast of Japan. Parturition occurred in winter, predominantly around the new and full moons, and parturition dates were distributed mainly from early January to late February. In the 4 years YOY S. inermis settled into distinctive groups at early spring, synchronized mainly to a semi-lunar cycle at new and full moon phases; except for 1998, in which settlement occurred around the first and third quarter moons. In all years settlers extruded earlier in the parturition season encompassed the first settlement groups that appeared in the bed and vice versa. Planktonic period ranged from 53 to 113 days, and its mean values varied significantly among settlement groups and years. Mean size at settlement showed less variability among settled groups and between years (range: 18–26mm total length), which suggested an ideal size for settling and active migration. On the basis of our findings we discuss the extent to which the 'tidal control', 'settlement linkage', and 'competent size' hypotheses explain the temporal pattern of settlement.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of settlement and abundance of older life stages were examined for three species of damselfish in the genus Dascyllus by monitoring natural colonization of standard amounts of initially empty juvenile microhabitat (anemones for D. trimaculatus; branching coral for D. flavicaudus and D. aruanus) transplanted to a series of sites within lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia. Large spatial differences in larval colonization were observed, which were temporally consistent but different among the species. At the whole-island scale, D. trimaculatus settled primarily on the northern shore, while settlement of the other two species was greatest at the southern end. The three species also showed different patterns of settlement within lagoons: D. aruanus settled mainly nearer to shore, D. flavicaudus primarily on offshore lagoon portions and D. trimaculatus colonized equally across the lagoons. Among sites around the island, the relative abundance of older juveniles after 10 months was a curvilinear function of the relative abundance of settlers for two species (D. trimaculatus and D. flavicaudus). There was no relationship between patterns of settlement and abundance of older juveniles for D. aruanus, although juvenile abundance was inversely related to that of juvenile D. flavicaudus. At the within-lagoon scale, settlement mirrored almost exactly the relative abundance of older lifestages of D. trimaculatus and D. flavicaudus, whereas there was just a qualitative match for D. aruanus. A competition experiment revealed that juvenile D. flavicaudus had a greater effect on population growth of D. aruanus than vice versa, and this mechanism helped explain why the modification of settlement patterns was greatest in D. aruanus. Interspecific variation in abundance of older stages was shaped to differing extents by both patterns of larval delivery and subsequent density-dependent processes involving competition for shelter space. The effects of soil-nutrient environment, plant genotype, and the interaction between the two on the resistance of the willow, Salix sericea, to insect species in a diverse herbivore community was measured. We found that soil-nutrient environment influenced plant growth and the abundance of most herbivores of S. sericea. However, environmental effects on herbivore abundance were often modified by plant genetics; the abundance of four of seven herbivores exhibited significant genotypeby-environment interaction effects. Pure genotype effects were mostly small and non-significant. The effects of fertilization differed among herbivores. Several herbivores were more abundant on fertilized plants, one was less abundant, and the abundance of others did not change. We found that feeding guild was a poor predictor of herbivore response. Finally we found significant phenotypic and genetic correlations among growth rate, internode length, and the abundances of several herbivores.  相似文献

The safety of biological control is a contentious issue. We suggest that constructing and analyzing food webs may be a valuable addition to standard biological control research techniques, as they offer a means of assessing the post-release safety of control agents. Using preliminary data to demonstrate the value of food webs in biocontrol programs, we quantified the extent to which a key agent has infiltrated natural communities in Australia and, potentially, impacted on non-target species. Using these data, we also demonstrate how food webs can be used to generate testable hypotheses regarding indirect interactions between introduced agents and non-target species. We developed food webs in communities invaded to varying degrees by an exotic weed, bitou bush, Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata, and a key biocontrol agent for this weed in Australia, the tephritid fly, Mesoclanis polana. Three food webs were constructed during springtime showing the interactions between plants, seed-feeding insects and their parasitoids. One food web was constructed in a plot of native Australian vegetation that was free of bitou bush (‘bitou-free’), another in a plot of Australian vegetation surrounded by an invasion of bitou bush (‘bitou-threatened’) and a third from a plot infested with a monoculture of bitou bush (‘bitou-infested’). The bitou-free web contained 36 species, the bitou-threatened plot 9 species and the bitou-infested web contained 6 species. One native Australian herbivore attacked the seeds of bitou bush. M. polana, a seed-feeding fly, was heavily attacked by native parasitoids, these being more abundant than the parasitoids feeding on the native seed feeders. A surprising result is that none of the three species of native parasitoids reared from M. polana were reared from any of the native herbivores. The food webs revealed how a highly host-specific biocontrol agent, such as M. polana has the potential to change community structure by increasing the abundance of native parasitoids. The webs also suggest that indirect interactions between M. polana and native non-target species are possible, these been mediated by shared parasitoids. The experiments necessary to determine the presence of these interactions are outlined.  相似文献

The controls of seedling emergence and survival determine the potential distribution of adult plants and, thereby, plant community structure. Seed availability, competition from established neighbors, and seedling predation may all limit seedling recruitment. In this field experiment, we followed the emergence and survival of seedlings of three perennial forbs, Achillea millefolium, Hypericum perforatum, and Monarda fistulosa, in old-fields in southeastern Michigan, USA. As adults, all three have aromatic foliage that may deter herbivory, but seedlings may be more susceptible than adults. To establish the relative importance of potential controls on seedling numbers, we manipulated seed availability through seed additions, the influence of competitors by neighbor-removals, and the influence of insect herbivores with insecticide in a fully factorial field experiment. Seed addition and insecticide never affected seedling emergence for any species. Competition from established neighbors controlled seedling emergence for all three species and decreased Achillea survival. Insecticide significantly increased Monarda seedling survival in competition plots, significantly increased Hypericum survival in open plots, and had no effect on Achillea. Notably, insecticide increased survival of the native Monarda fistulosa more than the two introduced species. While neighbors strongly reduced emergence and survival of all three species, herbivores acted on a species-specific basis. These results suggest the differential effects of insects may contribute more to the seedling species composition and abundance patterns than the less-selective influence of competition.  相似文献

Many native plant communities are replaced by exotic monocultures that may be successional stages or persistent community types. We surveyed a stand of Sapium sebiferum (Chinese Tallow Tree) that replaced tallgrass prairie in Texas and performed experiments with seeds and seedlings to determine the contributions of recruitment limitation and natural enemy release to allowing such a forest type to persist or to allowing native species to reduce Sapium dominance. The stand was dominated by Sapium, especially for mature trees (>99) and annual seed input (97) but less so for saplings (80). Field sown Sapium seeds had lower germination and survival rates than Celtis seeds. Together with the extreme dominance of Sapium in seed rain this suggests that native species are currently recruitment limited in this stand by seed supply but not by germination, early growth or survival. To investigate whether Sapium may benefit from low herbivory or diseases, we transplanted Sapium and Celtis seedlings into the forest and manipulated foliar fungal diseases and insect herbivores with sprays. As predicted, insect herbivores caused greater damage to Celtis seedlings than to Sapiumseedlings. However, suppression of insect herbivores caused significantly greater increases in survivorship of Sapium seedlings compared to Celtis seedlings. This suggests that herbivores in the understory of this Sapiumforest may significantly reduce Sapiumseedling success. Such a pattern of strong herbivore impact on seedlings growing near adult conspecifics was unexpected for this invasive species. However, even with insects and fungi suppressed, Sapium seedling performance was poor in this forest. Our results point towards Sapium as a successional species in a forest that will eventually be dominated by native trees that are currently recruitment limited but outperform Sapium in the understory.  相似文献

Colonies of the cosmopolitan urochordate Botryllus schlosseri that share one or both alleles at a single allorecognition locus (Fu/HC) and come into tissue contacts, may fuse and form a mixed entity, a chimera. Botryllus populations worldwide exhibit unprecedented extensive polymorphism at this locus, a result that restricts fusions to kin encounters. This study aims to compare spatiotemporal configurations in source and introduced B. schlosseri populations, residing on natural and man-made substrata, respectively. By using four microsatellite loci, we tested genetic consanguinity of colonies settled naturally along spatial vectors on both, natural (native populations) and man-made (introduced) substrates. Four populations were studied. Results revealed that B. schlosseri colonies, on both substrate types, assemble in groups of relatives that share similar microsatellite profiles. We suggest that this pattern of settlement promotes the formation of chimeras, which evoke conflicting interactions: cooperation between different somatic cell lines that constitute the colonial soma and competition between germ cells that inhabit the chimera gonads. Under natural conditions, the chimera may allow genetic flexibility that depends on joint genomic fitness of its partners. This is probably one of the life history characteristics that led to the worldwide distribution success of this species.  相似文献

To understand how plant communities are structured by herbivory it is essential to investigate the roles of different herbivores and the responses of a variety of plant species in different habitats. We examined the effects of mammalian herbivores on survival and growth of transplanted seedlings of two native trees (Eucalyptus albens and Callitris glaucophylla), and one native grass (Themeda australis) in white box (E. albens) woodlands in eastern Australia over 3 years. Herbivores were manipulated using four fencing treatments that successively excluded livestock, macropods, and rabbits from woodland and grassland (cleared pasture). Survival was highest in the absence of mammalian herbivores and in woodlands, and patterns differed among plant species. Survival of T. australis was low, especially in grasslands, and mortality by overgrowth was common in ungrazed treatments. All plant species were taller in fenced plots, and differences between treatments were greater in grassland. Rabbits and livestock had the greatest influence on C. glaucophylla, while T. australis and E. albens were most affected by livestock and macropods. We used field data to parameterize stage-classified matrix models to predict escape from herbivory (escape height >100 cm) for tree species. Reduced herbivory increased the proportion of individuals reaching escape height after 15 years. Rate of escape was greater in grassland, and this faster growth appeared to counteract much of the negative impact of herbivores. While T. australis was unable to escape herbivory, larger, ungrazed individuals were more likely to flower and therefore contribute to the maintenance of the population. Our results show that habitat and herbivore species strongly influence the effect of herbivory on vegetation.  相似文献

It has been proposed that seaweed secondary metabolites, e.g. brown algal phlorotannins, may have an ecologically important function as a chemical defence against epiphytes, by acting against colonisation of epiphytic organisms. We tested whether the low epiphytic abundance on the invasive brown seaweed Fucus evanescens, compared to the congeneric F. vesiculosus, is due to a more effective chemical defence against epiphyte colonisation. A field survey of the distribution of the common fouling organism Balanus improvisus (Cirripedia) showed that the abundance was consistently lower on F. evanescens than on F. vesiculosus. However, contrary to expectations, results from experimental studies indicated that F. vesiculosus has a more effective anti-settlement defence than F. evanescens. In settlement experiments with intact fronds of the two Fucus species, both species deterred settlement by barnacle larvae, but settlement was lower on F. vesiculosus both in choice and no-choice experiments. Phlorotannins from F. vesiculosus also had a stronger negative effect on larval settlement and were active at a lower concentration than those from F. evanescens. The results show that Fucus phlorotannins have the potential to inhibit settlement of invertebrate larvae, but that settlement inhibition cannot explain the lower abundance of the barnacle Balanus improvisus on F. evanescens compared to F. vesiculosus. Assessment of barnacle survival in the laboratory and in the field showed that this pattern could instead be attributed to a higher mortality of newly settled barnacles. Observation suggests that the increased mortality was due to detachment of young barnacles from the seaweed surface. This shows that the antifouling mechanism of F. evanescens acts on post-settlement stages of B. improvisus.  相似文献

It is often difficult to accurately assess the long-term effects of invaders because of a lack of data and the changing nature of ecosystems. However, available historical information can be used to make comparisons with current conditions and generate hypotheses that can be tested experimentally. This approach was used to examine changes in the bivalve community of Mission Bay, San Diego, California, USA. A 20-year dataset on subtidal bivalves shows a marked increase in abundance of the exotic mussel Musculista senhousia, and concomitant declines in species richness and the abundance of the native Solen rostriformis. Currently, Musculista also dominates the tidal creeks of a remnant salt marsh and an adjacent restored marsh, and is 100 times more abundant than any native bivalve species. A comparison of the bivalves now present in the remnant marsh creek to the community present 35 years ago demonstrates that while Musculista increased in abundance, the native Chione fluctifraga disappeared from the creek. In the same time frame, two other natives, Macoma nasuta and C. undatella, appeared in the system. Experiments demonstrate that the growth and survivorship of the surface-dwelling, suspension-feeding Chione spp. significantly decrease in the presence of Musculista, whereas the deeper-dwelling, deposit-feeding Macoma nasuta shows no such inhibition. Viewing these results in the broader context of physical change within the wetland explains some patterns of observed change and suggests effects due at least in part to Musculista, but also demonstrates the complexities associated with assessing long-term patterns in systems affected by multiple factors. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effects of the abundance of acorns of the oak, Quercus crispula, on the population dynamics of three rodent species (Apodemus speciosus, A. argenteus, and Clethrionomys rufocanus) were analyzed using time series data (1992–2006). The data were obtained in a forest in northern Hokkaido, Japan, by live trapping rodents and directly counting acorns on the ground. Apodemus speciosus generally increased in abundance following acorn masting. However, the clear effect of acorn abundance was not detected for the other two rodent species. Acorns of Q. crispula contain tannins, which potentially have detrimental effects on herbivores. Apodemus speciosus may reduce the damage caused by acorn tannins with tannin-binding salivary proteins and tannase-producing bacteria, whereas such physiological tolerance to tannins is not known in the other two rodent species. The differences in the effects of acorns between the three species may be due to differences in their physiological tolerance to tannins.  相似文献

Settlement of fish to seagrass with low leaf densities was investigated by a field experiment in Botany Bay, NSW. Artificial seagrass units (ASU) were used to simulate isolated seagrass habitats of 0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 leaves m-2. A total of 369 fish of 21 species settled in the experimental units during a 6 week period. The labrid, Achoerodus viridis, made up almost 70% of these individuals. The abundance of recently settled A. viridis increased greatly between 0 and 25 leaves m -2, At more than 25 leaves m-2, A. viridis settled in approximately equal numbers. Patterns of settlement for all other species combined were similar to those for A. viridis. During the experiment, an epiphytic alga. Giffordia mitchellae, colonized and grew on the ASU. The alga increased the structure associated with the experimental units. Treatment leaf densities could thus be regarded only as relative measures of shelter. At low leaf densities, fish settlement increased with increasing algal cover; at higher leaf densities, the opposite occurred. The rapid increase in abundance of recently settled fish over a relatively narrow range of leaf densities above zero implies that small increases in shelter can have large effects on settlement of larval fish.  相似文献

Total Hg concentrations were determined in muscle tissue of some fishes with different feeding habits (12 fish species) obtained from the main fishing locations along the Alexandria coast, a region particularly impacted by historic industrial Hg activities. Health risks to human via dietary intake of the edible portion of fish were assessed by the target hazard quotients (THQs). Mercury maximum concentrations corresponding to fish muscle tissue were found in L. mormyrus, S. rivulatus, and S. luridus (3.56, 2.94, and 1.35 μg g?1 wet weight, respectively). Thence most of these three species bass (75% of L. mormyrus, 76% of S. rivulatus, and 54% of S. luridus) were greater than a 0.47 μg g?1 threshold corresponding to a 1 meal per month consumption limit. M. cephalus, S. aurita, S. chrysotaenia, B. boops, and A. djedaba bass (100%) were less than a 0.12 μg g?1 threshold corresponding to a 4 meals per month safe consumption limit. Mercury THQs values, ranging from 0.11–1.76, were of concern. In particular, the health risk was mainly ascribed to consumption of S. rivulatus (1.72) and L. mormyrus (1.76), although also the TEQs values caused by consuming S. luridus (0.64) were rather high, being close to 1.  相似文献
