1. Seasonal variation in microhabitat use and activity of 14 giant kokopu Galaxias argenteus, a drift‐feeding galaxiid fish, was compared using radiotelemetry. 2. During winter giant kokopu predominantly used low velocities and intermediate depths by night and day. Activity recorded during 24 and 72 h periods indicated that fish were consistently active at night and inactive during the day. Activity data corresponded with point‐in‐time habitat use data, both of which indicated that fish were concealed amongst cover during the day and used open water habitats at night. 3. During summer, giant kokopu used higher water velocities, shallower depths and coarser substrata, particularly at night but also occasionally during the day relative to winter. Giant kokopu were active by both day and night in summer, although periods of activity were less defined and less predictable than during winter. 4. Adults used predictable home reaches at base‐flow, with most individuals repeatedly using of one or two cover locations within their ‘home’ reach. Reaches used by fish were relatively short (rarely exceeding 26 m) irrespective of season and always included a single pool‐riffle sequence. 5. Diel and seasonal behaviour of giant kokopu was generally comparable with that exhibited by other drift feeding fish species in small temperate streams. However, the nocturnal activity of giant kokopu contrasts with activity patterns in various salmonids, indicating that the impact of predation by different drift feeding fish may vary considerably.  相似文献

A study was carried out in the Mlali river in south-central Tanzania with two aims. First, to determine microhabitat availability in two sites (A and B) with respect to water depth, water velocity and dominant substratum type. Second, to assess microhabitat use by Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host snail of intestinal schistosomiasis and to investigate whether these snails show preferences for certain microhabitats. The two sites differed significantly with respect to width, water depth, water velocity and substratum composition. It is suggested that the absence of B. pfeifferi from site B is mainly associated with the high water velocities at that site, where 62% of the measurements exceeded30 cm s-1. In site A, the microhabitat use by 327 B. pfeifferi snails was assessed by means of direct observation. No significant relationships were found between snail size and the habitat variables investigated, indicating that snail size appeared to be of no importance in spatial microhabitat selection. B. pfeifferi snails showed statistically significant preferences for shallow water (depth: 2–7 cm) and the preferred water velocities ranged between 12 and 21 cm s-1 with an estimated optimum at13.3 cm s-1. The identification and analysis of the guild structure of vertebrate assemblages has played a fundamental role in the understanding of the underlying mechanisms responsible for their community organization and structuring. This approach generally has not been undertaken for temperate water intertidal fish assemblages. In central Chile, fishes are important components of the intertidal community, but no studies attempting to understand their organization and structuring have been done. In the present study, the diets of 13 of the most abundant species which inhabit tidepools in the rocky intertidal zone of central Chile were determined. A total of 660 fishes was collected at 5 sites: Los Molles, Con-Cón, Quintay, El Tabo, and Las Cruces. Dietary overlap between all species pairs was calculated and a phenogram of dietary similarity was constructed and analyzed using a bootstrapping technique to objectively determine guild membership. The results showed that the intertidal fish assemblage of central Chile can be divided into three feeding guilds: two guilds consisting of carnivorous species and one guild of omnivorous and herbivorous species. The possible causes and implications of the resulting guild structure and the potential effects of predation by these fishes on other components of the intertidal community are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we review the temporal patterns of variation of rocky intertidal resident fish assemblages and discuss possible mechanisms that may explain these patterns. These assemblages tend to be highly resilient and stable on an inter-annual basis, but tend to undergo marked seasonal fluctuations, as different species recruit and reach different phases of their life cycles. Larval supply is usually not a limiting factor suggesting that post-recruitment deterministic mechanisms exert a strong influence on assemblage organization. At methodological level, it is argued that traditional destructive sampling techniques should be avoided whenever possible. It is proposed that a deeper understanding of these assemblages requires more detailed information on intraspecific interactions between members of each constituent species, and information on the interactions between limited numbers of species for which mutually influences are particularly strong. It is argued that size, topography and biotic cover of a pool may provide a limited number of favourable sites for fishes of a given species and class size so that intraspecific competition, and possibly predation of the individuals less able to get access to best sites, may explain to a considerable extent the inter-annual stability and resilience of these assemblages.  相似文献

Population dynamics and the effects of intraspecific competition on limpet growth and maintenance of bare patches were investigated for the intertidal limpet Cellana ornata (Dillwyn) at a boulder-dominated site and on a rocky platform near Kaikoura (South Island), New Zealand. Distribution and abundance patterns of C. ornata were described in relation to other biota and tidal height. C. ornata occurred almost exclusively in patches devoid of macroalgae, particularly in the mid-tidal zone. Both adult and juvenile limpets were most abundant on the tops of boulders, where their numbers were positively correlated with barnacle cover, which averaged 77%. The size structure and growth patterns of C. ornata were different between populations. Mark-recapture studies showed that the slopes of annual growth increments regressed on initial sizes were similar at both sites but that the annual increments on the platform were about 6 mm greater than on boulders. Growth virtually ceased at 27 mm for limpets at the barnacle-dominated boulder site and at 40 mm at the platform site. Recruiting cohorts had 20% survival on boulders and 37% on the platform during their first year. The largest size classes at both sites had around 57% annual survival. To test the effects of varying limpet densities on the growth and mortality of limpets and the maintenance of bare patches, densities of C. ornata were experimentally increased at both sites. Beyond a density of 4 per 0.25 m2, sizes and survival of limpets were reduced at both sites, but the effect was more pronounced at the boulder site. Limpets at the boulder site were more effective at maintaining bare space than those on the reef platform. Enclosing limpets in plots with and without barnacles showed that C. ornata and a co-occurring species (Cellana denticulata (Martyn)) grazed more effectively and had greater growth in cleared plots. Overall, there was considerable variation in the demographics of C. ornata between populations driven by site-specific characteristics.  相似文献

1. Within‐species phenotypic variation is hugely variable and may play a role in determining the range of habitats a species can exploit. Our study addressed two main questions: 1. does phenotypic variation allow some species (i.e. habitat‐generalists) to use heterogeneous habitats and 2. are habitat‐generalists more variable than species occupying relatively homogeneous environments (i.e. habitat‐specialists)? 2. We examined the morphology of the common bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus), a habitat‐generalist eleotrid fish found in lakes and rivers throughout New Zealand. We also compared the level of morphological variability in common bullies with that in the closely related redfin bully (Gobiomorphus huttoni), a habitat‐specialist of moderate‐ and fast‐flowing rivers. 3. Common and redfin bullies were collected from the South Island of New Zealand. A series of body and fin measurements were made, and cephalic dorsal head pores of the mechanosensory lateral‐line system were counted. The pores and associated canal neuromasts are important for prey detection and predator avoidance in other species, particularly, in turbulent conditions where the effectiveness of superficial neuromasts may be compromised. 4. The common bully had more dorsal head pores in fish from rivers than in those from lakes. This pattern was apparent only in adults, suggesting that selective pressures associated with adult habitat, be it rivers or lakes, are responsible. 5. As expected, there was greater phenotypic variability in the generalist common bully than in the specialist redfin bully, particularly with regard to the sensory pores, suggesting their importance for survival in turbulence. 6. We identified habitat‐related patterns in phenotypic variability in a generalist species and demonstrated a link between phenotypic variability and habitat breadth. Variation in the common bully may explain its ability to occupy a range of habitats.  相似文献

Seasonal microhabitat selection by sympatric young Atlantic salmon and brown trout was studied by diving. Both species, especially Atlantic salmon, showed seasonal variation with respect to surface and mean water velocities and depth. This variation is partly attributed to varying water flows and water temperatures. In winter the fish sought shelter in the substratum. A spatial variation in habitat use along the river due to different habitat availabilities was observed. Both species occupied habitats within the ranges of the microhabitat variables, rather than selecting narrow optima. It is hypothesized that the genetic basis allows a certain range to the behavioural response. Microhabitat segregation between the two species was pronounced, with brown trout inhabiting the more slow-flowing and partly more shallow stream areas. Atlantic salmon tolerated a wider range of water velocities and depths. Habitat suitability curves were produced from both species. It is suggested that habitat suitability curves that are based on observations of fish occupancy of habitat at median or base flow may not be suitable in habitat simulation models, where available habitat is projected at substantially greater water flows.  相似文献

Aggressive interactions, foraging behaviour and microhabitat use were observed among four sympatric stream fishes inhabiting the water column: ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis), white-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis), masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and Japanese dace (Tribolodon hakonensis), each species being categorised into five body-size classes (species-size groups; SSG's). Aggressive interactions were observed between most pairs of SSG's, an almost linear dominance order being apparent throughout the three-month study period. Ayu were relatively subordinate in June, but became the second most dominant in July and the most dominant in August, as a consequence of a reversal in dominance order with salmon. In contrast, smaller-sized dace, which continually suffered from intra- and interspecific aggression, occupied the most subordinate ranks throughout the study period. Intensive aggression was observed among various SSG's, exhibiting same microhabitat propensity throughout the three months. The direction and frequency of aggressive interactions varied month by month due to a reversal in dominance order between ayu and masu salmon, and/or changes in density, body size and resource use of the component members. Opponent selectivity was higher within SSG's, where resource use was assumed to be highly overlapping, rather than among SSG's throughout the study period. Correlation analysis indicated that opponent selectivity in aggressive interactions among SSG's was positively correlated with similarity in microhabitat selectivity in June, but not in other months or with that in foraging habits, suggesting that intensive aggressive behaviour reflected overlapping habitat use among assemblage members during a certain period.  相似文献

The temperature regime of the intertidal microhabitat of two species of co-existing amphibious stichaeoid fishes, Anoplarchus purpurescens and Pholis ornata, were compared with experimentally determined tolerances to elevated temperatures. Studies of the critical thermal maxima of the two species revealed only slight differences in temperature tolerance but exposure to a cycled pattern of high temperatures sharply differentiated the resistance times of the two species with P. ornata capable of tolerating greater cumulative exposure to thermal stress when administered in a cycled program of temperature fluctuations with peak temperature at 27 °C. While the experimentally determined temperature tolerances exceeded those measured in the field, the greater tolerance of P. ornata may facilitate habitation of intertidal mudflats during summer months.  相似文献

Local populations within a species can become isolated by stochastic or adaptive processes, though it is most commonly the former that we quantify. Using presumably neutral markers we can assess the time‐dependent process of genetic drift, and thereby quantify patterns of differentiation in support of the effective management of diversity. However, adaptive differences can be overlooked in these studies, and these are the very characteristics that we hope to conserve by managing neutral diversity. In this study, we used 16 hypothetically neutral microsatellite markers to investigate the genetic structure of the roundnose grenadier in the North Atlantic. We found that one locus was a clear outlier under directional selection, with FST values much greater than at the remaining loci. Differentiation between populations at this locus was related to depth, suggesting directional selection, presumably acting on a linked locus. Considering only the loci identified as neutral, there remained significant population structure over the region of the North Atlantic studied. In addition to a weak pattern of isolation by distance, we identified a putative barrier to gene flow between sample sites either side of the Charlie‐Gibbs Fracture Zone, which marks the location where the sub‐polar front crosses the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge. This may reflect a boundary across which larvae are differentially distributed in separate current systems to some extent, promoting differentiation by drift. Structure due to both drift and apparent selection should be considered in management policy.  相似文献

Geographic variability in the physiological attributes of widely distributed species can be a result of phenotypic plasticity or can reflect evolutionary responses to a particular habitat. In the field, we assessed thermal variability in low and high intertidal pools and the distribution of resident fish species Scartichthys viridis and transitory Girella laevifrons along this vertical intertidal gradient at three localities along the Chilean coast: Antofagasta (the northernmost and warmest habitat), Carrizal Bajo (central coast) and Las Cruces (the southernmost and coldest habitat). In the laboratory, we evaluated the thermal sensitivity of fish captured from each locality. The response to temperature was estimated as the frequency of opercular movements and as thermal selectivity in a gradient; the former being a indirect indicator of energy costs in a particular environment and the latter revealing differential occupation of habitat. Seawater temperature in intertidal pools was greatest at Antofagasta, and within each site was greatest in high intertidal pools. The two intertidal fish species showed opposite patterns of local distribution, with S. viridis primarily inhabiting the lower sectors of the intertidal zone, and G. laevifrons occupying the higher sectors of the intertidal zone. This pattern was consistent for all three localities. Locality was found to be a very important factor determining the frequency of opercular movement and thermal selectivity of both S. viridis and G. laevifrons. Our results suggest that S. viridis and G. laevifrons respond according to: (1) the thermal history of the habitat from which they came, and (2) the immediate physical conditions of their habitat. These results suggest local adaptation rather than plasticity in thermoregulatory and energetic mechanisms.  相似文献

Mechanisms of speciation in cichlid fish were investigated by analyzing population genetic models of sexual selection on sex-determining genes associated with color polymorphisms. The models are based on a combination of laboratory experiments and field observations on the ecology, male and female mating behavior, and inheritance of sex-determination and color polymorphisms. The models explain why sex-reversal genes that change males into females tend to be X-linked and associated with novel colors, using the hypothesis of restricted recombination on the sex chromosomes, as suggested by previous theory on the evolution of recombination. The models reveal multiple pathways for rapid sympatric speciation through the origin of novel color morphs with strong assortative mating that incorporate both sex-reversal and suppressor genes. Despite the lack of geographic isolation or ecological differentiation, the new species coexists with the ancestral species either temporarily or indefinitely. These results may help to explain different patterns and rates of speciation among groups of cichlids, in particular the explosive diversification of rock-dwelling haplochromine cichlids.  相似文献

Abstract A cohort of Diplodus sargus, a coastal marine fish abundant in the Mediterranean Sea, has been surveyed from its settlement following the pelagic larval stage up to 4 months of age, when the juveniles are moving to adult habitats in order to assess selective processes. We followed the mortality by looking at the decrease in population abundance and, simultaneously, the genetic structure using allozymes and the growth associated with each genotype to test for a relationship between genotype and phenotype. The recruitment survey demonstrated that 80% of individuals arrived within a single night and that they show very similar age providing a discrete pulse of new recruits that we followed for changes in survival and allele frequencies. After 4 months, there was a total mortality of 80.8%, with the disappearance of 181 of 224 fish that initially colonized the rocky barrier. The decrease in number followed a logarithmic model with a maximum decrease in the early period (first 30 days). The model derived from the 4 months of data demonstrates that most of the mortality in the cohort occurs over the first 120 days following settlement and the model predicted a final abundance of 10 individuals after 1 year. Within the same period of 4 months, we observed significant decrease in multilocus heterozygosity. Such a decrease in heterozygosity partly resulted from a purge of the Pgm-80* allele. Together with this major change in a natural population, an aquarium experiment demonstrated that individuals with Pgm-80* alleles show significantly lower growth than other new recruits. We propose that the decrease in frequency of Pgm-80* in the natural environment is the result of targeted predation that eliminates smaller individuals and therefore individuals bearing Pgm-80*. The potential metabolic effect as well as a scenario that could lead to the maintenance of polymorphism is discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Aerial and aquatic VO2 measurements of Acanthoclinus fuscus and Forsterygion sp. showed that A. fuscus weighing up to 25 g obtained oxygen from air and water at similar rates, whereas the ratio of aerial to aquatic VO2 for F. sp. was mass dependent. The Q10 for aquatic respiration of A. fuscus and F. sp. was found to be 2.3 and 2.5, respectively. Aerial VO2 measurements showed that A. fuscus could continue to increase its aerial VO2 up to at least 25° C. In contrast the aerial VO2 of F. sp. increased only between 5° C and 15° C and decreased between 20 and 25° C. The Pcrits of both A. fuscus and F. sp. were found to be about 35 torr. Bullia digitalis is an intertidal whelk that lives on sandy beaches in South Africa. It is highly variable in shell colour, with individuals varying from white to dark brown. This paper describes shell colour variation of B. digitalis at seven sites, along a 230 km coastline east of the Cape Peninsula. Seven colour forms were found: striped, violet, banded violet, banded brown, orange, pale yellow and white. These forms are probably genetically determined morphs. The striped form is the most common at all sites, constituting 53–62% of each sample. The violet is the second most common morph. Its frequencies are remarkably stable at 15–17%. The striped form blends well into the sandy environment and may therefore be of considerable cryptic value in concealing B. digitalis from predators. The violet form is highly conspicuous. Its stable frequency throughout the study area may represent a genetic balance that is not relevant to any visual advantages of the violet colour.  相似文献

Juvenile salmonid fish readily form dominance hierarchies when faced with limited resources. While these social interactions may result in profound behavioural and physiological stress, it is unknown if this social stress is evident at the level of the cellular stress response—specifically, the induction of stress or heat shock proteins (Hsps). Thus, the goal of our study was to determine if Hsps are induced during hierarchy formation in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). To this end, we measured levels of three Hsps, Hsp70, Hsc (heat shock cognate)70 and Hsp90 in the white muscle, liver and brain of trout that had been interacting for 36 h, 72 h or 6 days. Our data indicate that Hsps are induced in both dominant and subordinate fish in a time- and tissue-specific manner. In further mechanistic experiments on fasted and cortisol-treated fish, we demonstrated that high plasma cortisol does not affect Hsp induction in trout white muscle or liver, but both conditions may be part of the mechanism for Hsp induction with social stress in the brain. We conclude that the behavioural and physiological stress experienced by juvenile rainbow trout in dominance hierarchies can be extended to the induction of Hsps.  相似文献

The evolutionary outcome of interspecific hybridization, i.e. collapse of species into a hybrid swarm, persistence or even divergence with reinforcement, depends on the balance between gene flow and selection against hybrids. If female mating preferences are open-ended but sign-inversed between species, they can theoretically be a source of such selection. Cichlid fish in African lakes have sustained high rates of speciation despite evidence for widespread hybridization, and sexual selection by female choice has been proposed as important in the origin and maintenance of species boundaries. However, it had never been tested whether hybridizing species have open-ended preference rules. Here we report the first experimental test using Pundamilia pundamilia, Pundamilia nyererei and their hybrids in three-way choice experiments. Hybrid males are phenotypically intermediate. Wild-caught females of both species have strong preferences for conspecific over heterospecific males. Their responses to F1 hybrid males are intermediate, but more similar to responses to conspecifics in one species and more similar to responses to heterospecifics in the other. We suggest that their mate choice mechanism may predispose haplochromine cichlids to maintain and perhaps undergo phenotypic diversification despite hybridization, and that species differences in female preference functions may predict the potential for adaptive trait transfer between hybridizing species.  相似文献
