Foragers use a variety of anti-predator behaviours to increase their safety from predators. While foraging, animals should alter usage within or between sites to balance the benefits of feeding with the costs of predation. I tested how the distribution of food abundance and predation danger interacts to explain spatial usage (i.e. distance from shore) by migratory western sandpipers ( Calidris mauri ) at Boundary Bay, British Columbia, Canada, during northward and southward migrations. At Boundary Bay there are opposing spatial gradients in the distribution of food abundance and safety from predators. Predation danger for sandpipers is high near the shoreline where there is approach cover for falcons and decreases with distance from shore. Food abundance for sandpipers declines as distance from the shoreline increases. Food and danger attributes at Boundary Bay also differ temporally, such that food abundance is higher during southward migration, and predation danger is higher during northward migration. The spatial usage by western sandpipers balances the tradeoff between the opposing spatial gradients in food and safety. For both migratory periods spatial usage of the mudflat by sandpipers is highest at distances from the shoreline where food abundance and predation danger are intermediate. During the northward migration sandpiper usage is highest between 150 and 500 m from the shoreline, and during the southward migration sandpiper usage is highest between 100 and 600 m from the shoreline. Despite temporal differences in food and danger attributes, spatial usage of the site by sandpipers does not differ between migratory periods. Understanding how the distribution of food abundance and predation danger interact to affect the within site usage by shorebirds has important implications for assessments of site quality.  相似文献

We investigated the seasonal occurrence, wet : dry : carbon: nitrogen weight ratios, population biomass, gastric pouchcontents, and rates of feeding, growth and respiration of thescyphomedusa Aurelia aurita in the central part of the InlandSea of Japan. Aurelia aurita medusae began to appear in January/Februaryas ephyrae, reached annual maximum body size in July/August,and disappeared, presumably due to death, by November. Initialslow growth in early spring was followed by a period of exponentialgrowth (mean growth rate: 0.069 d–1) between April andJuly. In the Ondo Strait, which is characterized by strong tidalmixing, the A. aurita population (mean carbon biomass: 66.0mg C m–3) overwhelmingly dominated the zooplankton-communitybiomass (mean biomass of micro- and mesozooplankton: 23.7 mgC m–3) between May and early August The gastric contentanalysis revealed that A. aurita ate almost all micro- and mesozooplankters,of which small copepods were most important. On the basis ofdigestion time for small copepods (60 min) and their abundancein the gastric pouch of field-collected A. aurita, we determinedthe weight specific feeding rates and clearance rates. The formerincreases linearly with increasing copepod abundance, but thelatter was relatively constant irrespective of the food supply. We also measured the respiration rates of A. aurita and expressedthem as functions of body weight and temperature. These physio-ecologicalparameters enabled us to construct the carbon budget of theA. aurita population typical of early summer in the Ondo Strait.Predicted population-feeding rate (6.07 mg C m–3 d–1)was higher than the population-food requirement for both metabolismand growth (4.55 mg C m–3 d–1), indicating thatfood supply was sufficient to sustain the observed growth rate. This feeding rate was equivalent to 26% of micro- and mesozooplanktonbiomass, a significant impact on zooplankton.  相似文献

We investigated the potential of acoustic technology for estimatingzooplankton distribution as part of an ongoing study of sockeyesalmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) production in three lakes of theFraser River system, British Columbia. Simultaneous acousticand zooplankton samples were obtained in 1 and 2 m depth incrementsfrom the surface to 30 m at mid-lake stations. We derived asignificant regression relationship (r2=0.71, n=79) betweenzooplankton biomass ranging between 5 and 220 mg m–3 andacoustic backscatter (V2). The ensuing regression model wasused to predict zooplankton biomass distribution from acousticdata collected along transects representing different lake areas.  相似文献

Ingestion and clearance rates, feeding behaviors and life historyvariables of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris were evaluatedover a range of food concentrations encountered in nature (0.01–3.0mm3 1–1 of Isochrysis galbana). Ingestion rates increasedand clearance rates decreased with increasing food concentration. No maximum feeding thresholds were observed over the range ofalgal concentrations offered. Weight-specific ingestion ratesdecreased with increasing body weight. Feeding behaviors suchas mandibular activity, abdominal claw rejections of cloggedfeeding structures and feeding appendage activity decreasedat a food level of 0.3 mm3 l–1 of l. galbana. Peniliaavirostris had very poor survivorship at extremely low (0.01mm3 l–1 and high (3.00 mm3 l–1) food levels. Mortalitywas hardly affected at food levels of 0.03–1.0 mm3 l–1Reproduction did not occur at food levels of  相似文献

There is very little quantitative experimental information onfeeding in chaetognaths and ctenophores because of the difficultyof obtaining undamaged specimens. As important plankton predators,a knowledge of their daily rations as a function of food concentrationis vital to ecosystem models of water column trophodynamics. At specified food concentrations, three ctenophore species alwaysingested higher specific daily rations than three species ofchaetognaths. Food consumption of ctenophores increased linearlythroughout the food concentration range (exceeding 106 µgC/m3 Although food consumption of chaetognaths reached an upperlimit at very high food concentrations, it seemed unlikely thatsatiation would occur under environmental conditions. Below10,000 food items/m3 chaetognaths were unable to obtain l% oftheir specific daily ration, although the few environmentalstudies based on gut contents suggest substantial feeding evenbelow this concentration. The apparent threshold may reflectthe environmental patch density necessary for feeding to begin. At high food concentrations daily rations of newly-hatched ctenophoresand chaetognaths can exceed well over 10 times their body carbon. In ctenophores even adults can consume these extremely largerations although chaetognaths follow the more usual pattern, where ration decreases throughout life. Gut residence time offood (where single items were ingested) increased with age andsize of food item selected in Sagitta hispida from one to twohours, levelling off after animals reached 6 mm. Mnemiopsismccradyi maintained a uniform digestion time of one hour asit grew, except for a brief period when it first selected larger-sizedfood. In older animals of both species, multiple ingestion becamemore common, where gut residence time was directly proportionalto number of food items consumed, ranging up to 5 hours forfive or more food items. Chaetognaths showed more variabilityof gut residence time than did ctenophores. It was concludedthat these animals are much better at catching food in the environmentthan laboratory experiments would suggest.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer Ascomorpha ovalis feeds on large dinoflagellates(e.g. Ceratium sp., Peridinium sp.) and is able to extract theircell contents by means of its virgate mastax. This paper presentsthe results of experiments on the feeding behaviour of laboratory-culturedAscomorpha with Cerarium furcoides as food algae. Ascomorphaare three times larger than their prey Ceratium (by volume),but with regard to total length, their prey was even 20% larger.Ascomorpha showed a hyperbolic functional response curve witha plateau of the feeding rate at 8 Ceratium cells animal–1dar–1 when concentrations of Ceratium were >100 cellsml–1. The mean handling time (time for capturing and extractingone Ceratium cell) was 3 min. The shape of the functional responsewas better described by a curvilinear model than by a rectilinearmodel. However, handling times cannot be responsible for this, since they were too short to set limits on ingestion rates. At low food concentrations, encounter rates with prey seemedto limit the feeding rates of Ascomorpha, whereas at mediumto high food concentrations, Satiation effects (lower attackrates) seemed to set limits on the feeding rates. Ascomorphashowed a significant decrease in the exploitation of singleCeratium cells at high prey concentrations. This decrease couldbe explained by a saturation effect in which the partly filledguts of Ascomorpha did not permit the total extraction of thecontents of a Ceratium cell.  相似文献

A zooplankton community in the Polar Frontal Zone north of SouthGeorgia was sampled for 5 days in February 1994. Feeding ofvarious copepodite stages of six copepod species was assessedby a series of gut fluorescence/gut evacuation experiments.Feeding periodicity was compared to vertical distribution andmigration patterns, as revealed by Longhurst Hardy PlanktonRecorder (LHPR) and ring net catches. Despite chlorophyll alevels reaching only 0.8 mg m–3 and daily carbon rationsbased on phytoplankton intake being low, feeding of all thecopepods was restricted mainly to the 8 h night-time perid.During the daytime, the epipelagic community was verticallydispersed within the top 100 m. At night, upward migration bymost species led to a convergence of almost all zooplanktersin the upper half of the surface mixed layer. However, large-amplitudevertical migrations which crossed the thermocline were performedonly by Metridia lucens and Pleuromamma robusta. Although feedingby both migrants and non-migrants was mainly at night, therewas no diel signal in gut evacuation rate. The gut evacuationrates of the nine copepod species and stages differed significantly(5-fold) and were negatively related to the extent of theirdiel vertical migration. The long gut-passage times of the migratoryspecies, M.lucens and P.robusta, would have allowed them timeto defaecate some of the food eaten near the surface at depth, contributing to an active carbon transfer out of the mixed layer. However, their scarcity at this site meant that their grazingcomprised only -<1.4% of total copepod ingestion, so theircombined gut flux is likely to have been negligible (-0.4 mgcarbon day–1).  相似文献

Perceptive performance and feeding behavior of calanoid copepods   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The goal of this study was to determine variables associatedwith calanoid feeding behavior, and thus, to improve our understandingof the basics of calanoid feeding rates. These variables includedperiods and frequency of appendage motion, rates of cell clearance, distance at which a copepod first reacts to a cell which iseventually captured, and rate of water flow through the areacovered by the motions of a copepod's feeding appendages. Theeffects of these variables on feeding rates were determinedfor copepodids and adult females of the calanoid copepod Eucalanuspileatus at phytoplankton concentrations covering the rangeencountered by this species on the south-eastern shelf of theUSA. Our results indicate that the distance at which E.pileatusperceives phytoplankton cells increases {small tilde}2-foldas food concentrations decrease from 1.0 to 0.1 mm3 l–1.These results lead us to hypothesize that this is due to increasedsensitivity of chemosensors on the copepods' feeding appendages. This 2-fold increase in perceptive distance amounts to a near4-fold increase in perceived volume which is close to the 6-foldincrease in volume swept clear (VSC) from 1.0 to 0.1 mm3 l–1of Thalassiosira weissflogii. We assume that the increases inVSC by planktonic copepods, when food levels are below satiation, are largely a function of the sensory performance of the individualcopepod.  相似文献

The daytime vertical distribution of Sagiita crassa in TokyoBay was examined from February 13, 1988 to February 20, 1989.High densities of larger-size chaetognaths were found near thesea bottom, whereas the smaller animals tended to inhabit theupper layers. This feature of distribution is discussed in relationto the distribution of their main food organisms, e g. Pseudodiaptomusmarinus, Acartia omoru, Centropages abdomialis and Oithona davisae. The two periods of replacement of two morphs were confirmedby the variation only in mean body length of this chaetognath, unlike the previous authors who made additional morphologicalobservations. It was hypothesized that S.crassa has at leastfive generations Two generations, including mostly the largerforms, had higher growth rates than the generation consistingmainly of the small form. Yearly respiration of S.crassa was8.2 g C mAbstract. Yearly production of this animal wasestimated to be 3.8 g C m. A feeding estimate revealedthat chaetognaths require a prey production of 13.1 g C myear1. The impact of this chaetognath on the prey populationin Tokyo Bay and the propriety of an estimated value of annualproduction of S crassa is discussed.  相似文献

The tetraammonium salt of the K+ binding fluorescent dye benzofuranisophthalate (PBFI) was used to investigate the influence ofpotassium nutrition (0.1–2.1 mol m–3) on apoplasticK+ inVicia faba leaves by means of ratio imaging. As a referencethe infiltration-centrifugation method was used. Both methodsreflected the influence of K+ supply on apoplastic K+ concentration. The abaxial leaf side revealed significantly higher K+ concentrations(20-25 mol m–3) than the adaxial side (5–8 mol m–3).Application of CCCP led to an immediate increase in apoplasticK+ demonstrating the reliability of the PBFI method. Zooplankton tolerant to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) could beindirectly affected by UVR through interactions with UV-sensitivespecies in the same ecosystem. In Lake Giles, Pennsylvania,USA, the calanoid copepod Leptodiaptomus minutus is more UVRtolerant than the cohabiting species Daphnia catawba and Cyclopsscutifer. We asked whether L. minutus is affected by UV-inducedmortality of a food competitor (D. catawba) or a predator ofits nauplii (C. scutifer). We conducted two in situ enclosureexperiments with six treatments: L. minutus alone, L . minutus+ Daphnia and L. minutus + Cyclops in the presence and absenceof UVR. There were few differences in survival among treatmentsin Experiment 1, which had enhanced food and a cumulative UVR(320 nm) dose of 9.3 kJ m–2. In Experiment 2, which hadambient food and a UVR (320 nm) dose of 20.0 kJ m–2, L.minutus survival and reproduction were higher in the +UVR comparedto –UVR, regardless of competitors or predators. Chlorophylla (Chl a) in Experiment 2 was higher in the +UVR than –UVR.While interactions between zooplankton species of differingUVR tolerances are potentially important, these results insteaddemonstrate that the beneficial UVR effect on L. minutus isindependent of concurrent detrimental UVR effects on competitorsand predators. Further research on the phytoplankton communityis necessary to determine whether UVR alleviates bacterial competition, increases nutrient availability or affects phytoplankton byother mechanisms.  相似文献

The distinct patterns of stratification in the North Channeland stratified region of the western Irish Sea influence theseasonal abundance of phytoplankton. The 3–4 month productionseason in the stratified region was characterized by productionand biomass peaks in the spring (up to 2378 mg C m2 day–1and 178.4 mg chlorophyll m–2) and autumn (up to 1280 mgC m–2 day–1 and 101.9 mg chlorophyll m–2).Phytoplankton in the North Channel exhibited a short, late productionseason with a single summer (June/July) peak in production (4483mg Cm–2 day–1) and biomass (–160.6 mg chlorophyllm–2). These differences have little influence on copepoddynamics. Both regions supported recurrent annual cycles ofcopepod abundance with similar seasonal maxima (182.8–241.8103ind. m–2) and dominant species (Pseudocalanus elongatusand Acartia clausi). Specific rates of population increase inthe spring were 0.071 and 0.048 day1 for the North Channel andstratified region, respectively. Increased copepod abundancein the stratified region coincided with the spring bloom, andwas significantly correlated with chlorophyll standing stock.Increased copepod abundance preceded the summer production peakin the North Channel. This increase was not correlated withchlorophyll standing crop, suggesting that a food resource otherthan phytoplankton may be responsible for the onset of copepodproduction prior to the spring bloom. Hetero-trophic microplanktonas an alternative food source, and advection of copepods fromthe stratified region, are proposed as possible explanationsfor copepod abundance increasing in advance of the summer peakin primary production.  相似文献

Primary production, and bacterial production as measured byincorporation of [3H-methyl]thymidineinto ice cold TCA insolublematerial were investigated during 1984 in Lake Kvernavatnet, west Norway. Primary production averaged 222 mg C m–2day–1 and bacterial production averaged 163 mg C m–2day–1. The bacterial production in the euphotic pelagiczonecontributed -60% of the total pelagic bacterial production. The zooplankton was dominated byDaphnia longispina. From growthexperiments with animals fed only natural food in coarse filteredlake water, the population daily growth increments were calculated. The average production of D.longispina was 151 mg C m–2day–1 during the period investigated. The estimated primaryproduction was too low to sustain both the bacterial productionand the zooplankton food requirements. These results imply thatthe carbon cycle of the lake is dependent on the supply of allochtonousmaterial, or that the current methods for measuring productionrates in aquatic environments are systematical erratic.  相似文献

The number, size (mm3 pellet –1) and total volume of fecalpellets produced (mm3 h–1) by Boeckella titicacae increasedwith concentration of Chlorella and natural seston in threedifferent lakewaters from Bahia de Puno and Lago Grande of LakeTiticaca and nearby Laguna Arapa. The three lakewaters differedin the size and number of fecal pellets produced at seston concentrations>0.5 mg dry wt l–1. However, the total volume of fecalpellets egested varied little. Large-sized food (>10 µg)resulted in larger pellets but smaller total fecal production.Food concentration had parallel effects on the production offeces and on feeding rates. Both fecal production and feedingincreased linearly with food concentration with saturation between5 and 7.5 x 105 Chlorella ml–1 (3.7–5.6 mg dry wtl–1). Varied responses in fecal production when fed differentsize fractions of lake seston suggest Boeckella has a complexand flexible feeding behavior. Feeding preferences of B.titicacaeand B.occidentalis (Ivlev index) for two seston size fractionsare generally reflected by fecal production.  相似文献

Pulmonary vasoconstriction and vascularmedial hypertrophy greatly contribute to the elevated pulmonaryvascular resistance in patients with pulmonary hypertension. A rise incytosolic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]cyt)in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC) triggers vasoconstriction and stimulates cell growth. Membrane potential (Em) regulates[Ca2+]cyt by governing Ca2+influx through voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. Thusintracellular Ca2+ may serve as a shared signaltransduction element that leads to pulmonary vasoconstriction andvascular remodeling. In PASMC, activity of voltage-gated K+(Kv) channels regulates resting Em. In thisstudy, we investigated whether changes of Kv currents[IK(V)], Em, and[Ca2+]cyt affect cell growth by comparingthese parameters in proliferating and growth-arrested PASMC. Serumdeprivation induced growth arrest of PASMC, whereas chelation ofextracellular Ca2+ abolished PASMC growth. Resting[Ca2+]cyt was significantly higher, andresting Em was more depolarized, inproliferating PASMC than in growth-arrested cells. Consistently, wholecell IK(V) was significantly attenuated in PASMCduring proliferation. Furthermore, Emdepolarization significantly increased resting[Ca2+]cyt and augmented agonist-mediatedrises in [Ca2+]cyt in the absence ofextracellular Ca2+. These results demonstrate that reducedIK(V), depolarized Em, and elevated [Ca2+]cyt may play a criticalrole in stimulating PASMC proliferation. Pulmonary vascular medialhypertrophy in patients with pulmonary hypertension may be partlycaused by a membrane depolarization-mediated increase in[Ca2+]cyt in PASMC.

Abstract. The North American mid‐continent population of Lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens L.) has increased by ca. 7% per year, largely as a result of geese feeding on agricultural crops in winter and on migration. We describe the long‐term effects of increasing numbers of geese at an arctic breeding ground (La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba) on intertidal salt‐marsh vegetation. Between 1985 and 1999 goose grubbing caused considerable loss of graminoid vegetation along transects in intertidal marshes. Loss of vegetation led to bare sediment with a plant cover of less than 2%. Changes in vegetation could not be described by simple linear, geometric or exponential functions; most losses occurred between 1988 and 1990 and losses were staggered in time between individual transects, some of which had all vegetation removed. Between 1979 and 1999 the standing crop in July in remaining intact heavily‐grazed swards of Puccinellia phry‐ganodes and Carex subspathacea fell from 40–60 g m‐2 to 20–30 g m‐2. Intense grazing on remaining patches of sward has restricted growth of these clonal forage plants and hypersalinity of bare sediments has precluded re‐establishment of vegetation. Between 1989 and 1993 numbers of faecal droppings in grazed plots reached maximum values of 15–22 droppings m‐2 wk‐1. Since then peak values have remained at less than 13 droppings m‐2 wk‐1. The loss of vegetation and changes in soil conditions have resulted in the establishment of an alternative stable state (hypersaline bare sediment).  相似文献

Both predicted (incubator) and measured (in situ) 14C-assimilationrates were studied from February to November 1981 at three stationsin Boknafjorden, a deep silled fjord of western Norway. Sampleswere taken from different light depths within the euphotic zone.A high degree of conformity was found between the two approaches.Daily values of carbon assimilation integrated over the euphoticzone varied between 0.05 and 1.4 g C m–2. Yearly primaryproduction varied between stations from 82 to 112 g C m–2(120–148 g C m–2 when based on average light conditions). The light-saturation curve parameters B and PBmax ranged from0.0056 to 0.0537 mg C mg Chla–1 h–1 µE–1m2 and from 0.7 to 8.5 mg C mg Chla–1 h–2 (in situassimilation numbers ranged from 0.9 to 9.3 mg C mg Chla–1h–1) respectively, which compare well with those publishedfrom the northwestern side of the Atlantic. The overall importanceof light in controlling photosynthesis throughout the year wasrevealed by the light utilization index , estimated to be 0.43mg C mg Chla–1 E–1 m2. The maximum quantum yieldwas encountered on August 17, with 0.089 mol CE–1. Chla/Cratios above and below 0.010 were found to be typical for shade-and light-adapted cells respectively. Assimilation numbers andgrowth rates were linearly related only when considering light-adaptedcells. Consistent with the findings of this study, the applicabilityof IK, B and PBmax as indicators of light-shade adaptation propertiesshould be questioned. Maximum growth rates were encounteredduring an autumn bloom of the dinoflagellate Gyrodinium aureolum(1.0 doublings day–1), while 0.7–0.8 doublings day–1were found for a winter bloom (water temperature of 2°C)of the diatom Skeletonema costatum. No unambiguous temperatureeffect on assimilation number and growth of phytoplankton couldbe recognized in Boknafjorden. A tendency towards increasedassimilation numbers coinciding with increased water columnstability was revealed. The highest PBmax values were oftenencountered at almost undetectable nutrient concentrations. At least during summer this could be attributed to recyclingof nutrients by macro- and/or microzooplankton, responsiblefor a greater part of the primary production now being grazeddown. This study supports the convention that the depth of theeuphotic zone may extend considerably below the 1% light depth.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and feeding of pelagic chaetognathsat 5°S, 160°W in the Central Equatorial Pacific wereinvestigated using a series of 0–500 m vertical haulswith a VMPS net over a 24 h period between 6 and 7 October 1990.The total number of individuals per haul was between 370 and688. Fourteen species in four genera were found at this station. The most abundant species was Sagitta enflata which comprised32.4–61.1% of the individuals collected from the 0–500m layer. Mesopelagic species made up 9.3–15.1% of thetotal number of individuals. Sagitta enflata and Pterosagittadraco were found in the upper part of the thermocline both byday and at night. The fraction of the population containingfood items (FCF) of S.enflata in the 0–50 m layer variedbetween 4.8 and 12.5% (mean 10.8%) and feeding activity washighest between sunrise and noon. The percentages of Copepoda,Foraminifera, crustacean larvae, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Ostracoda, fish and unidentified material in the gut of S.enflata were51.9,6.7,3.8,2.9,1.9,1.9 and 30.9%, respectively. Sagitta enflataconsumed food organisms which were mainly between 0.5 and 1.0mm in length. The daily feeding rate of S.enflata was 1.81 preyper individual, which was equivalent to 8.06 mg C m–2day–1. AN ENERGY BUDGET FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN ABALONE HALIOTIS MIDAE LINNAEUS   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Existing data on feeding, growth rate, fecundity, absorptionefficiency, respiration and excretion rates in the South Africanabalone Haliotis midae Linnaeus are converted to energy equivalentsand utilised to compile individual energy budgets. About 63%of the energy content of the food consumed (C) is lost as faeces(F) and a further 32% expended on respiration (R). Energy lossesin the form of ammonia excretion are negligible, accountingfor less than 1% of consumption. Some 5% of energy intake, or13% of absorbed ration (Ab) is thus available for growth andreproductive output (Pg & Pr). In juveniles (<100mm)this is all allocated towards somatic growth, while in adultsan increasing proportion of production is expended on reproductiveoutput. Although feeding, respiration and excretion rates allincrease with temperature the proportions of energy allocatedto the various components of the energy budget appear to beconsistent. Population energy budgets are calculated from densityand size distribution surveys at two study sites. At MarcusIsland, on the Cape west coast, the population has a standingstock of 82 g (wet flesh weight) m–2,.consumes about 3260KJm–2y–1 algae and has a P/B ratio of 0.46, whereasat Cape Hangklip, on the Cape south coast, the population biomassis_133gm–2, consumes 8613KJm–2y–1 and hasa P/B ratio of 0.70. These figures indicate that a high proportionof kelp bed primary production is directly consumed by grazingabalone in areas where populations have not been reduced byhuman exploitation (Received 16 March 1987;  相似文献

Tracer amounts of atmospheric [13N]-Iabelled ammonia gas, wereabsorbed by leaves of Lupinus albus and Helianthus annuus inboth the light and the dark. Exogenous [13N]-ammonia was onlyabsorbed in the dark when the feeding occurred shortly aftera period of illumination and the tissue was not depleted ofits carbohydrate reserves (e.g. starch). Incorporation of the[13N]-ammonia appeared to occur via the leaf glutamine synthetase/glutamatesynthase (GS/GOGAT) cycle since 2.0 mol m–3 MSX, an inhibitorof the GS reduced uptake in both the light and dark. Photosyntheticincorporation of 11CO2 was not affected by this treatment Therate of movement of [13N]-assimilates in the petiole of attachedleaves of Helianthus and Lupinus was similar to that of the11Cl-photo assimilates. Export of both [13N] and [11C]-Iabelledassimilates from the leaf and movement in the petiole in boththe light and the dark was inhibited by source leaf anoxia (i.e.nitrogen gas). Translocation was re-established at the samerate when the feed leaf was exposed to gas containing more than2% O2 which permitted dark respiration to proceed. After aninitial feeding of either 11CO2 or [13N]-ammonia at ambient(21%) O2 exposure of the source leaf to 2% O2, or 50% O2 didnot alter the rates of translocation, indicating that changesin photosynthetic activity in the source leaf due to photorespiratoryactivity need not markedly alter, at least during the shortperiod, the loading and translocation of either [11C ] or [13N]-labelledleaf products.
