Bird song is a complex behavior that requires the coordination of several motor systems. Sound is produced in the syrinx and then modified by the upper vocal tract. Movements of the hyoid skeleton have been shown in the northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) to be extensively involved in forming an oropharyngeal–esophageal cavity (OEC), which contributes a major resonance to the vocal tract transfer function. Here we report that a similar relationship exists between the volume of the OEC and the fundamental frequency in the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) whose song, unlike that of the cardinal, consists of a series of almost constant frequency notes. Cineradiography of singing sparrows shows that the oropharyngeal cavity and cranial end of the esophagus expand abruptly at the start of each note and maintain a relatively constant volume until the end of the note. Computation of the vocal tract transfer function suggests a major resonance of the OEC follows the fundamental frequency, making sound transmission more efficient. The presence of similar prominent song-related vocal tract motor patterns in two Oscine families suggests that the active control of the vocal tract resonance by varying the volume of the OEC may be widespread in songbirds. Men's voices contain acoustic cues to body size and hormonal status, which have been found to affect women's ratings of speaker size, masculinity and attractiveness. However, the extent to which these voice parameters mediate the relationship between speakers' fitness-related features and listener's judgments of their masculinity has not yet been investigated. 相似文献

Comparative analyses used to reconstruct the evolution of traits associated with the human language faculty, including its socio‐cognitive underpinnings, highlight the importance of evolutionary constraints limiting vocal learning in non‐human primates. After a brief overview of this field of research and the neural basis of primate vocalizations, we review studies that have addressed the genetic basis of usage and structure of ultrasonic communication in mice, with a focus on the gene FOXP2 involved in specific language impairments and neuroligin genes (NL‐3 and NL‐4) involved in autism spectrum disorders. Knockout of FoxP2 leads to reduced vocal behavior and eventually premature death. Introducing the human variant of FoxP2 protein into mice, in contrast, results in shifts in frequency and modulation of pup ultrasonic vocalizations. Knockout of NL‐3 and NL‐4 in mice diminishes social behavior and vocalizations. Although such studies may provide insights into the molecular and neural basis of social and communicative behavior, the structure of mouse vocalizations is largely innate, limiting the suitability of the mouse model to study human speech, a learned mode of production. Although knockout or replacement of single genes has perceptible effects on behavior, these genes are part of larger networks whose functions remain poorly understood. In humans, for instance, deficiencies in NL‐4 can lead to a broad spectrum of disorders, suggesting that further factors (experiential and/or genetic) contribute to the variation in clinical symptoms. The precise nature as well as the interaction of these factors is yet to be determined. 相似文献

Whereas low-frequency bellows (below 200 Hz) have been investigated in detail in both male and female domestic cattle (Bos taurus), male high-frequency bugle calls (over 800 Hz) have not been described so far in any large bovid species. In this study, high-frequency bugles and low-frequency bellows were recorded from three crossbred free-ranging domestic cattle bulls and analysed spectrographically. The maximum fundamental frequency of bellows was 113.6 Hz, whereas the maximum fundamental frequency of bugles was 958.4 Hz, ranging from 801 to 1125 Hz in different males. These amazingly high fundamental frequencies of bull bugles are comparable with those reported for Siberian wapiti Cervus elaphus sibiricus, but lower than reported values for some subspecies of North American wapiti Cervus canadensis. The similarity with both Siberian and North American wapiti was also observed in the production of bull biphonic bugles with two fundamental frequencies: the low and the high one. We suggest that bugles of domestic cattle bulls provide an excellent model for comparative research with cervid bugles concerning the mechanism of vocal production and the underlying anatomical and behavioural adaptations. 相似文献

Sex and individual recognition systems vary among species and can have various functions in different contexts. In order to determine the basis of identification by voice in the Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), the greeting calls of 32 individuals (18 males and 14 females) were recorded in May–June 2004 on the Kittiwake colony of Hornøya island (Barents sea) and analysed. On the basis of coefficient of variation calculations and discriminant analyses, we show (1) that calls are sexually dimorphic and that the dimorphism is mainly based on the value of the fundamental frequency, and (2) that calls are individually distinct, individuality being due to a complex of temporal and frequency parameters located in different parts of the signal. This coding strategy is discussed in the context of the colonial breeding habitat of the species. 相似文献

In vitro binding studies with isolated bovine lens vimentin and avian erythrocyte membranes reveal the existence of two functionally distinct sets of intermediate filament attachment sites. One population of such receptors is located along the nuclear envelope and comprises polypeptides recognizing the carboxy-terminal tail domain of vimentin. Vimentin associates with these nuclear surface receptors in a cooperative manner and forms extensive 10-nm filaments in a concentration-dependent fashion. Conversely, the plasma membrane contains binding sites that interact in a noncooperative, saturable fashion with vimentin, recognizing its amino-terminal head domain. The functional dichotomy of the vimentin-binding sites under in vitro conditions may reflect a vectorial assembly process whereby 10-nm filaments, although structurally apolar, acquire polar features brought about by the differential attachment to specific receptors arranged along the plasma membrane and the nuclear envelope. 相似文献

Acoustic signals play an important role in the lives of birds. Almost all avian species produce vocal signals in a variety
of contexts either in the form of calls or songs or both. In the present study different types of vocal signals of the tropical
avian speciesPycnonotus cafer were characterized on the basis of their physical characteristics and context of production. This species used six types
of vocal signals: contact signals, roosting signals, alarm signals, twittering signals, distress signals and begging signals.
Two types of alarm signals are produced based on predation pressure. These signals are dissimilar in all physical characteristics
except for dominant frequency. Although alarm signal type I and roosting signals are phonetically similar, they have completely
different sonogram characteristics. 相似文献

Vocal individuality has been used as a monitoring tool, and two criteria are a prerequisite: high variation among individuals and low variation within individuals, and vocal consistency within and across seasons. We examined individual variation in the territorial hoot calls of the tawny owl (Strix aluco) to discriminate between males and to assess a possible conservation technique that would allow for monitoring individuals within a study area. The territorial calls were recorded from five males in the Naejang Mountain National Park in South Korea during the breeding season in 2015 and 2016 and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively to determine the amount of variation within and between individuals. Our results showed that the territorial calls were specific to individuals within a population and that the acoustic distances between males living in the same territory during the two years were the smallest for the four nesting sites. Our results suggest that territorial calls of the tawny owls are individually identifiable over two years and that this acoustic technique can be useful for monitoring individual site fidelity. 相似文献

Significant additive genetic variance often occurs for male advertisement traits in spite of the directional selection imposed by female choice, a problem generally known in evolutionary biology as the lek paradox. One hypothesis, which has limited support from recent studies, for the resolution of this paradox is the role of genotype x environment interaction in which no one genotype exhibits the superior performance in all environments--a crossover of reaction norms. However, these studies have not characterized the actual variation of reaction norms present in natural populations, and the extent to which crossover maintains genetic variance remains unknown. Here, we present a study of genotype x environment interaction for the male calling song in populations of Achroia grisella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae; lesser waxmoth). We report significant variance among reaction norms for male calling song in two North American populations of A. grisella as measured along temperature, food availability, and density gradients, and there is a relatively high incidence of crossover of the temperature reaction norms. This range of reaction norm variants and their crossover may reflect the co-occurrence of plastic and canalized genotypes, and we argue that the different responses of these variants along environmental gradients may contribute toward the maintenance of genetic variance for male song. 相似文献

Like humans, songbirds are one of the few animal groups that learn vocalization. Vocal
learning requires coordination of auditory input and vocal output using auditory feedback
to guide one’s own vocalizations during a specific developmental stage known as the
critical period. Songbirds are good animal models for understand the neural basis of vocal
learning, a complex form of imitation, because they have many parallels to humans with
regard to the features of vocal behavior and neural circuits dedicated to vocal learning.
In this review, we will summarize the behavioral, neural, and genetic traits of birdsong.
We will also discuss how studies of birdsong can help us understand how the development of
neural circuits for vocal learning and production is driven by sensory input (auditory
information) and motor output (vocalization). 相似文献

Tettigoniids use hearing for mate finding and the avoidance of predators (mainly bats). Using intracellular recordings, we
studied the response properties of auditory receptor cells of Neoconocephalus bivocatus to different sound frequencies, with a special focus on the frequency ranges representative of male calls and bat cries.
We found several response properties that may represent adaptations for hearing in both contexts. Receptor cells with characteristic
frequencies close to the dominant frequency of the communication signal were more broadly tuned, thus extending their range
of high sensitivity. This increases the number of cells responding to the dominant frequency of the male call at low signal
amplitudes, which should improve long distance call localization. Many cells tuned to audio frequencies had intermediate thresholds
for ultrasound. As a consequence, a large number of receptors should be recruited at intermediate amplitudes of bat cries.
This collective response of many receptors may function to emphasize predator information in the sensory system, and correlates
with the amplitude range at which ultrasound elicits evasive behavior in tettigoniids. We compare our results with spectral
processing in crickets, and discuss that both groups evolved different adaptations for the perceptual tasks of mate and predator
detection. 相似文献

The embryonic chicken digestive tract consists of endodermal epithelium and mesenchyme derived from splanchnic mesoderm. Interactions between these two tissues are important for the establishment of regionality and the subsequent differentiation of digestive organs. In the present study we obtained a monoclonal antibody that reacted with mucus-associated antigen and named it the MA antibody. From 6 days of incubation, this antibody reacted with the esophageal, proventricular and gizzard epithelia. In the proventriculus, the MA antigen was expressed in luminal epithelial cells, while pepsinogen-producing gland cells became MA antigen-negative. The intestinal goblet cells, which secrete mucus, became positive to the antibody from day 13 of incubation. When the esophageal, proventricular or gizzard epithelium of a 6 day embryo was associated and cultivated with the proventricular mesenchyme, the luminal epithelial cells remained reactive to the MA antibody while gland cells were negative or only weakly positive. If the small-intestinal epithelium was cultivated with the proventricular or gizzard mesenchyme, the antigen was detected on the apical surface of the epithelium, suggesting that the expression of the MA antigen was induced by mesenchymal influences in the small-intestinal epithelium. These results suggest that spatio-temporally regulated expression of the MA antigen is controlled by the epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. 相似文献

The high-resolution solution structure of a monomeric circular permuted (cp) variant of the potent HIV-inactivating protein cyanovirin-N (CV-N) was determined by NMR. Comparison with the wild-type (wt) structure revealed that the observed loss in stability of cpCV-N compared to the wt protein is due to less favorable packing of several residues at the pseudo twofold axis that are responsible for holding the two halves of the molecule together. In particular, the N and C-terminal amino acid residues exhibit conformational flexibility, resulting in fewer and less favorable contacts between them. The important hydrophobic and hydrogen-bonding network between residues W49, D89, H90, Y100 and E101 that was observed in wt CV-N is no longer present. For instance, Y100 and E101 are flexible and the tryptophan side-chain is in a different conformation compared to the wt protein. The stability loss amounts to approximately 2kcal/mol and the mobility of the protein is evident by fast amide proton exchange throughout the chain. Mutation of the single proline residue to glycine (P52G) did not substantially affect the stability of the protein, in contrast to the finding for wtCV-N. The binding of high-mannose type oligosaccharides to cpCV-N was also investigated. Similar to wtCV-N, two carbohydrate-binding sites were identified on the protein and the Man alpha1-->2Man linked moieties on the sugar were delineated as binding epitopes. Unlike in wtCV-N, the binding sites on cpCV-N are structurally similar and exhibit comparable binding affinities for the respective sugars. On the basis of the studies presented here and previous results on high-mannose binding to wtCV-N, we discuss a model for the interaction between gp120 and CV-N. 相似文献

A three-dimensional model of the cellulose-binding domain of the rye-grass pollen allergen Lol pI built by homology modeling is proposed as a structural scaffold for expansins and other expansin-related proteins. A groove and an extended strip of aromatic and polar residues presumably account for the cellulose-binding properties of the protein domain. Two of the four predicted T-cell epitopes readily exposed on the surface of the cellulose-binding domain match with previously reported IgE-binding regions. A close structural relationship occurs between the cellulose-binding and allergenic properties. 相似文献

Lumazine synthase catalyzes the penultimate step in the synthesis of riboflavin in plants, fungi, and microorganisms. The enzyme displays two quaternary structures, the pentameric forms in yeast and fungi and the 60-meric icosahedral capsids in plants and bacteria. To elucidate the structural features that might be responsible for differences in assembly, we have determined the crystal structures of lumazine synthase, complexed with the inhibitor 5-nitroso-6-ribitylamino-2,4-pyrimidinedione, from spinach and the fungus Magnaporthe grisea to 3.3 and 3.1 A resolution, respectively. The overall structure of the subunit and the mode of inhibitor binding are very similar in these enzyme species. The core of the subunit consists of a four-stranded parallel beta-sheet sandwiched between two helices on one side and three helices on the other. The packing of the five subunits in the pentameric M. grisea lumazine synthase is very similar to the packing in the pentameric substructures in the icosahedral capsid of the plant enzyme. Two structural features can be correlated to the differences in assembly. In the plant enzyme, the N-terminal beta-strand interacts with the beta-sheet of the adjacent subunit, thus extending the sheet from four to five strands. In fungal lumazine synthase, an insertion of two residues after strand beta1 results in a completely different orientation of this part of the polypeptide chain and this conformational difference prevents proper packing of the subunits at the trimer interface in the icosahedron. In the spinach enzyme, the beta-hairpin connecting helices alpha4 and alpha5 participates in the packing at the trimer interface of the icosahedron. Another insertion of two residues at this position of the polypeptide chain in the fungal enzyme disrupts the hydrogen bonding in the hairpin, and the resulting change in conformation of this loop also interferes with proper intrasubunit contacts at the trimer interface. 相似文献

Although membrane-associated glycolysis has been observed in a variety of cell types, the mechanism of localization of glycolytic enzymes to the plasma membrane is not known. We hypothesized that caveolin-1 (CAV-1) serves as a scaffolding protein for glycolytic enzymes and may play a role in the organization of cell metabolism. To test this hypothesis, we over-expressed CAV-1 in cultured A7r5 (rat aorta vascular smooth muscle; VSM) cells. Confocal immunofluorescence microscopy was used to study the distribution of phosphofructokinase (PFK) and CAV-1 in the transfected cells. Areas of interest (AOI) were analyzed in a central Z-plane across the cell transversing the perinuclear region. To quantify any shift in PFK localization resulting from CAV-1 over-expression, we calculated a periphery to center (PC) index by taking the average of the two outer AOIs from each membrane region and dividing by the central one or two AOIs. We found the PC index to be 1.92 +/- 0.57 (mean +/- SEM, N = 8) for transfected cells and 0.59 +/- 0.05 (mean +/- SEM, N = 11) for control cells. Colocalization analysis demonstrated that the percentage of PFK associated with CAV-1 increased in transfected cells compared to control cells. The localization of aldolase (ALD) was also shifted towards the plasma membrane (and colocalized with PFK) in CAV-1 over-expressing cells. These results demonstrate that CAV-1 creates binding sites for PFK and ALD that may be of higher affinity than those binding sites localized in the cytoplasm. We conclude that CAV-1 functions as a scaffolding protein for PFK, ALD and perhaps other glycolytic enzymes, either through direct interaction or accessory proteins, thus contributing to compartmented metabolism in vascular smooth muscle. 相似文献

The enzyme inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) is responsible for the rate-limiting step in guanine nucleotide biosynthesis. Because it is up-regulated in rapidly proliferating cells, human type II IMPDH is actively targeted for immunosuppressive, anticancer, and antiviral chemotherapy. The enzyme employs a random-in ordered-out kinetic mechanism where substrate or cofactor can bind first but product is only released after the cofactor leaves. Due to structural and kinetic differences between mammalian and microbial enzymes, most drugs that are successful in the inhibition of mammalian IMPDH are far less effective against the microbial forms of the enzyme. It is possible that with greater knowledge of the structural mechanism of the microbial enzymes, an effective and selective inhibitor of microbial IMPDH will be developed for use as a drug against multi-drug resistant bacteria and protists. The high-resolution crystal structures of four different complexes of IMPDH from the protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas foetus have been solved: with its substrate IMP, IMP and the inhibitor mycophenolic acid (MPA), the product XMP with MPA, and XMP with the cofactor NAD(+). In addition, a potassium ion has been located at the dimer interface. A structural model for the kinetic mechanism is proposed. 相似文献

Carbohydrate chains of cancer glycoprotein antigens contain major outer changes dictated by tissue-specific regulation of glycosyltransferase genes, the availability of sugar nucleotides, and competition between enzymes for acceptor intermediates during glycan elongation. However, it is evident from recent studies with recombinant mucin probes that the final glycosylation profiles of mucin glycoproteins are mainly determined by the cellular repertoire of glycosyltransferases. Hence, we examined various cancer cell lines for the levels of fucosyl-, beta-galactosyl, beta-N-acetylgalactosaminyl-, sialyl-, and sulfotransferase activities that generate the outer ends of the oligosaccharide chains. We have identified glycosyltransferases activities at the levels that would give rise to O-glycan chains as reported by others in breast cancer cell lines, T47D, ZR75-1, MCF-7, and MDA-MB-231. Most breast cancer cells express Gal-3-O-sulfotransferase specific for T-hapten Gal beta1-->3GalNAc alpha-, whereas the enzyme from colon cancer cells exhibits a vast preference for the Gal beta1,4GlcNAc terminal unit in O-glycans. We also studied ovarian cancer cells SW626 and PA-1 and hepatic cancer cells HepG2. Our studies show that alpha1,2-L-fucosyl-T, alpha(2,3) sialyl-T, and 3-O-Sulfo-T capable of acting on the mucin core 2 tetrasaccharide, Gal beta1,4GlcNAc beta1,6(Gal beta1,3)GalNAc alpha-, can also act on the Globo H antigen backbone, Gal beta1,3GalNAc beta1,3Gal alpha-, suggesting the existence of unique carbohydrate moieties in certain cancer-associated glycolipids. Briefly, our study indicates the following: (i) 3'-Sulfo-T-hapten has an apparent relationship to the tumorigenic potential of breast cancer cells; (ii) the 3'-sulfo Lewis(x), the 3-O-sulfo-Globo unit, and the 3-fucosylchitobiose core could be uniquely associated with colon cancer cells; (iii) synthesis of a polylactosamine chain and T-hapten are favorable in ovarian cancer cells due to negligible sialyltransferase activities; and (iv) a 6'-sialyl LacNAc unit and 3'-sialyl T-hapten appear to be prevalent structures in hepatic cancer cell glycans. Thus, it is apparent that different cancer cells are expressing unique glycan epitopes, which could be novel targets for cancer diagnosis and treatment. 相似文献

Advertisement calls of green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea) have two spectral peaks centered at about 1 kHz and 3 kHz. Addition of a component of intermediate frequency (1.8 kHz) to a synthetic call reduced its attractiveness to females relative to an alternative lacking this component. This mid-frequency suppression occurred over a 20-dB range of playback levels. Addition of other intermediate frequencies had weak effects on preferences at some playback levels, in some localities, and at lower-than-normal temperatures. These effects correlate well with the response properties of a population of low-frequency-tuned auditory neurons innervating the amphibian papilla. Males of a closely related species (H. gratiosa) produce calls with emphasized frequencies within the range of suppression in H. cinerea; however, suppression also occurred in localities well outside the area of geographical overlap with this species. Thus, previous speculation that mid-frequency suppression evolved to enhance species discrimination is probably incorrect. This phenomenon is more likely to reflect a general sensory bias in anurans and other vertebrates, tone-on-tone inhibition. Such negative biases, and other inhibitory mechanisms, almost certainly play an important role in the evolution of communication systems but have received far less attention than positive biases that enhance signal attractiveness. 相似文献
