The aim of this work was to assess the effect of leaf thickness, leaf succulence (LS), specific leaf area (SLA), specific leaf mass (Ws) and leaf water content (LWC) on chlorophyll (Chl) meter values in six Amazonian tree species (Carapa guianensis, Ceiba pentandra, Cynometra spruceana, Pithecolobium inaequale, Scleronema micranthum and Swietenia macrophylla). We also tested the accuracy of a general calibration equation to convert Minolta Chl meter (SPAD-502) readings into absolute Chl content. On average, SPAD values (x) increased with fresh leaf thickness (FLT [μm] = 153.9 + 0.98 x, r 2 = 0.06**), dry leaf thickness (DLT [μm] = 49.50 + 1.28 x, r 2 = 0.16**), specific leaf mass (Ws [g (DM) m−2] = 6.73 + 1.31 x, r 2 = 0.43**), and leaf succulence (LS [g(FM)] m−2 = 94.2 + 1.58 x, r 2 = 0.19**). However, a negative relationship was found between SPAD values and either specific leaf area [SLA (m2 kg−1) = 35.1 − 0.37 x, r 2 = 0.38**] or the leaf water content (LWC [%]= 80.0 − 0.42 x, r 2 = 0.58**). Leaf Chl contents predicted by the general calibration equation significantly differed (p<0.01) from those estimated by species-specific calibration equations. We conclude that to improve the accuracy of the SPAD-502 leaf thickness and LWC should be taken into account when calibration equations are to be obtained to convert SPAD values into absolute Chl content.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters, growth, and pigment contents were determined during expansion of the fourth leaf of in vitro photoautotrophically cultured Nicotiana tabacum L. plants at three irradiances [photosynthetically active radiation (400–700 nm): low, LI 60 μmol m−2 s−1; middle, MI 180 μmol m−2 s−1; and high, HI 270 μmol m−2 s−1]. During leaf expansion, several symptoms usually accompanying leaf senescence appeared very early in HI and then in MI plants. Symptoms of senescence in developing leaves were: decreasing chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content and Chl a/b ratio, decreasing both maximum (FV/FM) and actual (ΦPS2) photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, and increasing non-photochemical quenching. Nevertheless, net photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate (P N) did not decrease consistently with decrease in Chl content, but exhibited a typical ontogenetic course with gradual increase. P N reached its maximum before full leaf expansion and then tended to decline. Thus excess irradiance during in vitro cultivation did not cause early start of leaf senescence, but impaired photosynthetic performance and Chl content in leaves and changed their typical ontogenetic course.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of Valeriana jatamansi plants, grown under nylon net shade or under different tree canopies, was saturated with photons at 1 000 mol m–2 s–1 photosynthetic photon-flux-density (PPFD), whereas open-grown plants were able to photosynthesise even at higher PPFD, e.g. of 2 000 mol m–2 s–1. Plants grown under net shade had higher total chlorophyll (Chl) content per unit area of leaf surface. However, Chl a/b ratio was maximal in open-grown plants, but remained unchanged in plants grown in nylon net shade and under different tree canopies. Sun-grown plants had thicker leaves (higher leaf mass per leaf area unit), higher wax content, and higher P N than shade grown plants. Thus V. jatamansi is able to acclimate to high PPFD and therefore this Himalayan species may be cultivated in open habitat to meet the ever-increasing industrial demand.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) in an adult oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) canopy were highest in the 9th leaf and progressively declined with leaf age. Larger leaf area (LA) and leaf dry mass (LDM) were recorded in middle leaves. P N showed a significant positive correlation with g s and a negative relationship with leaf mass per area (ALM). The oil palm leaf remains photosynthetically active for a longer time in the canopy which contributes significantly to larger dry matter production in general and greater fresh fruit bunch yields in particular.  相似文献

Variations in leaf gas-exchange characteristics, leaf pigment content, and other important leaf traits were investigated in seven wild Oryza species, five hybrids, and five improved varieties. The significant variations were observed in photosynthetic pigment contents amongst different species of Oryza. The mean chlorophyll (Chl) content was higher in O. sativa (varieties and hybrids), while O. eichengeri showed the lowest Chl content. The mean carotenoid (Car) content in O. sativa (varieties and hybrids) was higher than in other wild rice species. O. eichengeri and O. barthii had significantly lower Car contents than other rice species. Significant differences were noticed in the rate of photosynthesis (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate (E), internal CO2 concentration (C i), specific leaf mass (SLM), and leaf thickness amongst different Oryza species. The mean P N was the highest in O. nivara followed by O. eichengeri. The mean P N was the lowest in O. glumaepatula, which was lower than that of cultivated varieties and hybrids of O. sativa. High rates of photosynthesis were observed in O. nivara (ACC. No. CR 100097), O. rufipogon (ACC.No. CR 100267), and O. nivara (ACC.No. CR 100008). The O. nivara and O. rufipogon genotypes with high P N might be used in rice improvement programmes for an increase of leaf photosynthesis in rice. Multiple correlations performed between different gas-exchange characteristics and other physiological traits revealed that the rate of photosynthesis was not dependent on the leaf pigment content or the leaf thickness. A strong positive correlation between P N and the P N/Ci ratio, which represents the carboxylation efficiency, indicated that the observed variation in P N was not based on pigment content or other leaf traits.  相似文献

Plants of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) were subjected to 7-d and 14-d waterlogging and sprayed with 10 and 100 mg 1-1 of gibberellic acid (GA3). Waterlogging decreased the leaf area (A), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), chlorophyll content (Chi) and temporarily the leaf water potential (Ψw) and increased stomatal diffusive resistance (rs) of both leaf surfaces. Application of GA3 increased A and Pn and significantly decreased the rs of both leaf surfaces but did not affect Ψw or Chl. Thus GA3 partially alleviated the effects of waterlogging on A, rs and Pn.  相似文献

Plant growth, contents of photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic gas exchange, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Heinong37] were investigated after it was inoculated with Sinorhizobium fredii USDA191 or treated with 5 mM (NH4)2SO4 (N5) and 30 mM (NH4)2SO4 (N30), respectively. In the plants following N5 fertilization, not only plant biomass, leaf area, and Chl content, but also net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), carboxylation efficiency (CE), maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem 2 (PS2), and quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) were markedly improved as compared with the control plants. There were also positive effects on plant growth and plant photosynthesis after rhizobia inoculation, but the effects were much less than those of N5 fertilization. For N30 plants there were no significant positive effects on plant growth and photosynthetic capacity. Plant biomass, P N, and g s were similar to those of N-limited (control) plants. ΦPS2 and photochemical quenching (qP) were obviously declined while content of carotenoids and non-photochemical quenching (qN) were significantly enhanced in N30 treated plants. This indicated that excess N supply may cause some negative effects on soybean plants.  相似文献

The spatial patterns of photosynthetic characteristics and leaf physical traits of 171 plants belonging to nine life-forms or functional groups (trees, shrubs, herbs, evergreen trees, deciduous trees, C3 and C4 herbaceous plants, leguminous and non-leguminous species) and their relationships with environmental factors in seven sites, Yangling, Yongshou, Tongchuan, Fuxian, Ansai, Mizhi and Shenmu, ranging from south to north in the Loess Plateau of China were studied. The results showed that the leaf light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax), photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), chlorophyll content (Chl), and leaf mass per area (LMA) of all the plants in the Loess Plateau varied significantly among three life-form groups, i.e., trees, shrubs and herbs, and two groups, i.e., evergreen trees and deciduous trees, but leaf nitrogen content differed little among different life-form groups. For the 171 plants in the Loess Plateau, leaf Pmax was positively correlated with PNUE. The leaf nitrogen content per unit area (Narea) was positively correlated but Chl was negatively correlated with the LMA. When controlling the LMA, the Narea was positively correlated with the Chl (partial r = 0.20, P < 0.05). With regard to relationships between photosynthetic characteristics and leaf physical traits, the Pmax was positively correlated with N area, while the PNUE was positively correlated with the Chl and negatively correlated with the Narea and LMA. For all the species in the Loess Plateau, the PNUE was negatively correlated with the latitude and annual solar radiation (ASR), but positively correlated with the mean annual rainfall (MAR) and mean annual temperature (MAT). With regard to the leaf physical traits, the leaf Chl was negatively correlated with the latitude and ASR, but positively correlated with the MAR and MAT. However, the Narea and LMA were positively correlated with the latitude and ASR, but negatively correlated with the MAR and MAT. In general, leaf Narea and LMA increased, while PNUE and Chl decreased with increases in the latitude and ASR and decreases in MAR and MAT. The effects of nitrogen (N) supply restriction on the CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) function of flag leaves were compared between two contrastive Japanese rice cultivars, a low-yield cultivar released one century ago, cv. Shirobeniya (SRB), and a recently improved high-yield cultivar, cv. Akenohoshi (AKN). Both cultivars were solution-cultured at four N supply levels from N4 (control) to N1 (the lowest). With a reduction in N-supply, contents of N (LNC), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO), and chlorophyll (Chl) in flag leaves decreased in both cultivars. In parallel with this, the net photosynthetic rate (P N), mesophyll conductance (g m), and stomatal conductance (g s) decreased. P N was more dominantly restricted by g m than g s. The values of P N, g m, and RuBPCO content were larger in AKN than SRB at the four N supply levels. The content of Chl greatly decreased with N deficiency, but the reduction in the maximum quantum yield of PS2 was relatively small. Quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) decreased with N deficiency, and its significant cultivar difference was observed between the two cultivars at N1: a high value was found in AKN. The content ratio of Chl/RuBPCO was also significantly low in AKN. The low Chl/RuBPCO is one of the reasons why AKN maintained a comparatively high P N and ΦPS2 at N deficiency. The adequate ratio of N distribution between Chl and RuBPCO is the important prerequisite for the efficient and sustainable photosynthesis in a flag leaf of rice plant under low N-input.  相似文献

High variability in leaf gas exchange and related traits were found in 30 genotypes of field grown finger millet. The variability in carbon exchange rate per unit leaf area (P N) can be partly attributed to the differences in the stomatal conductance (gs) and area leaf mass (ALM). The P N was positively correlated with total dry matter (TDM). However, no relationship between P N and seed yield was found. The leaf area showed a positive and significant correlation with total biomass. None of the other gas-exchange traits had significant relationship either with TDM or with seed yield. The ALM showed a strong positive association with P N. However, it was not correlated with either total biomass or seed yield. As a result, the use of ALM as surrogate for P N for identifying high biomass producing genotypes only had a limited value. Hence selection for high P N would result in higher biomass producing types.  相似文献

Thirty-days-old plants of two cultivars of okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.), Sabzpari and Chinese-red, were subjected for 30 d to two water regimes (100 and 60 % field capacity). Leaf water potential and osmotic potential of both lines decreased significantly with the imposition of drought. Both the leaf pressure potential and osmotic adjustment were much lower in Chinese-red than those in Sabzpari. Chlorophyll (Chl) b content increased, whereas Chl a content remained unchanged and thus Chl a/b ratios were reduced in both lines. Drought stress also caused a significant reduction in net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), and water use efficiency (WUE) especially in cv. Sabzpari. The lines did not differ in intrinsic WUE (P Ngs) or intercellular/ambient CO2 ratio. Overall, the growth of two okra cultivars was positively correlated with P N, but not with g s or P N/E, and negatively correlated with osmotic adjustment.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) declined from upper leaves to the lower ones during dry and rainy seasons, indicating that long-term carbon budget should take into account P N variations for different leaf types. Relatively greater P N in the dry season suggested that this species is more able to maintain higher P N under drought, but the relatively higher E in the dry season might reduce water use efficiency (P N/E) for the species. Significant correlations between P N and g s indicated that g s may be the critical factor for P N variability in the desert region.  相似文献

The effects of shade on the growth, leaf photosynthetic characteristics, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters of Lycoris radiata var. radiata were determined under differing irradiances (15, 65, and 100% of full irradiance) within pots. The HI plants exhibited a typical decline in net photosynthetic rate (P N) during midday, which was not observed in MI- and LI plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in HI plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) value was higher and the minimal fluorescence (F0) was lower in the, and LI plants. Diurnal patterns of stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) were remarkably similar to those of P N at each shade treatments, and the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) had the opposite change trend. Under both shading conditions, the light saturation point, light compensation point and photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max) became lower than those under full sunlight, and it was the opposite for the apparent quantum yield (AQY). The higher the level of shade, the lower the integrated daytime carbon gain, stomatal and epidermis cell densities, specific leaf mass (SLM), bulb mass ratio (BMR), leaf thickness, and Chl a/b ratio. In contrast, contents of Chls per dry mass (DM), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), leaf length, leaf area and total leaf area per plant increased under the same shade levels to promote photon absorption and to compensate for the lower radiant energy. Therefore, when the integrated daytime carbon gain, leaf area and total leaf area per plant, which are the main factors determining the productivity of L. radiata var. radiata plant, were taken into account together, this species may be cultivated at about 60∼70% of ambient irradiance to promote its growth.  相似文献

Diurnal variation in net photosynthetic rate (P N) of three-year-old plants of Ginkgo biloba was studied under open, O (receiving full sunlight), net-shade, NS (40 % of photosynthetically active radiation, PAR), or greenhouse, G (25 % PAR) conditions. In all three conditions, P N was higher in morning along with stomatal conductance (g s), and intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), while leaf temperature and vapour pressure deficit were low. The O-plants exhibited a typical decline in P N during midday, which was not observed in NS-plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in O-plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and photosystem 2 (PS2) yield (PS2) values were higher in the NS- and G-plants. On the contrary, stomatal density and index, chlorophyll a/b ratio, leaf thickness, and density of mesophyll cells were greater in O-plants. Further, higher P N throughout the day along with higher relative growth rate under NS as compared to O and G suggested the better efficiency of Ginkgo plants under NS conditions. Therefore, this plant species could be grown at 40 % irradiance to meet the ever-increasing demand of leaf and also to increase its export potential.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and growth characteristics of Parthenocissus quinquefolia were measured under differing soil water availability within a pot. Decreased soil moisture significantly reduced the leaf relative water content (RWC) and the above- and below-ground biomass. However, more biomass was allocated to the root than to the leaf. Net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) were also significantly decreased but water use efficiency (WUE) was increased. Midday depressions in P N and g s were not evident for the well-irrigated plants. With the lower water availability, midday reductions in P N and g s were much more marked and the duration of the depression was longer. Additionally, the P N-irradiance response curves also indicated that water supply affected photosynthesis capacity. The growth and photosynthetic response of P. quinquefolia to water supply indicated that this species could resilient to water availabilities and adapt to Hunshandak conditions very well.  相似文献

Leaf gas exchange characteristics were measured in twenty woody species that differ in succession status ranging from pioneer species (PS) to late succession species (LS) in a Brazilian rain-reforestation ecosystem. Photon-saturated photosynthetic rate, calculated per either a leaf area (P NA) or a dry mass (P NM) basis, differed among species. P NA and P NM were highest in PS and lowest in LS. Variation among species was 3-fold (from 7 to 23 mol m–2 s–1) for P NA, and 5-fold (from 50 to 275 mol kg–2 s–1) for P NM. The highest P NA (23 mol m–2 s–1) and P NM (275 mol kg–2 s–1) values were recorded in PS Croton urucurana, while the lowest P NA (7 mol m–2 s–1) and P NM (50 mol kg–2 s–1) values were recorded in LS Aspidosperma cylindrocarpon. A considerable overlap was recorded between PS and LS in values of stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration rate (E), and leaf mass to area ratio (ALM). However, C. urucurana also showed highest g s and E. P NM was highly correlated with ALM in both PS and LS (r=–0.75 and –0.90, respectively). The high values of instantaneous transpiration efficiency (ITE) and intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) were also observed in the PS when compared with the LS.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (PN), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPC) activity, chlorophyll (Chl) content and biomass production were estimated at monthly intervals inChukrasia tabularis, Dolichandrone atrovirens, Eugenia jambolana, Gmelina arborea, Lannea coromandelica, Terminalia arjuna andTerminalia bellerica from September 1990 to August 1991. The leaves of all the seven tree species showed significantly higher PN during summer than in winter and these rates differed from one species to the other. A positive correlation was found between PN of different tree species and their Chl content or biomass production. There was no significant correlation between ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity and PN when these were expressed on leaf area basis.  相似文献

Under constant salinity we analysed the leaf characteristics of Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. in combination with gas exchange and carbon isotopic composition to estimate leaf water-use efficiency (WUE) and potential nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE). NaCl was not added to the control plants and the others were maintained at salinities of 15 and 30 ‰ (S0, S15, and S30, respectively). Leaf succulence, sodium (Na), nitrogen (N), and chlorophyll (Chl) contents increased under salinity. Salinity had a negative impact on net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) at high and moderated irradiances. Potential NUE declined significantly (p<0.05) with salinity by 37 and 58 % at S15 and S30, respectively, compared to S0 plants. Conversely, compared to S0 plants, P N/g s increased under saline conditions by 12 % (S15) and 50 % (S30). Thus, WUE inferred from P N/g s was consistent with salinity improved short-term WUE. Long-term leaf WUE was also enhanced by salinity as suggested by significantly increased leaf δ13C with salinity. Improved WUE under salinity explains the eco-physiological success of mangrove species under increasing salinity. Conversely, decline in NUE may pose a problem for L. racemosa under hyper-saline environments regardless of N availability.  相似文献
