The inner ear of Ichthyophis glutinosus is described with emphasis on the position of the sensory organs and the polarization of the hair cells. The hair cell polarization patterns of the maculae, cristae and papilla basilaris is similar to previous observations in other tetrapods. The papilla amphibiorum shows a simpler bidirectional polarization than described in other amphibians. The papilla neglecta, a sensory organ in the utriculus shows a unidirectional posteriorly directed polarization. A neglecta has not been found in the utriculus of anurans and urodeles previously.  相似文献

Quantitative details of the surface morphology of the hearing organ, the Papilla basilaris, as seen in the scanning electron microscope are described for the tufted duck Aythya fuligula and for comparison for the domestic chicken Gallus gallus domesticus, for which some published information is already available. As in the other avian species investigated to date, each papilla shows a unique constellation of features. The papilla of the tufted duck is 3.5 mm long in the unfixed state and contains 8,200 sensory hair cells. It shows systematic changes in its surface features along the length and across the width of the sensory epithelium. In general, its features and those of the chicken Papilla basilaris can be described as relatively primitive in comparison with other species. The tufted duck papilla does, however, show one feature that has so far been found to be well developed only in advanced papillae; the number of stereovilli per hair cell bundle is generally much higher on hair cells of the neural than those on the abneural side. This difference is only weakly developed in the chicken. It is clear that features considered to be evolutionarily advanced were acquired independently of one another during evolution and that each bird species can show a mosaic of primitive and advanced features. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Cactus spines reduce herbivory, direct water toward roots and reduce the impacts of high- and low-temperature extremes. Yet, shading of stems by spines reduces incident photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD), photosynthesis and growth. This study compared spinescence, PFD interception, stem temperature, Photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry and xanthophyll pigment composition for three species of cacti from the Mojave Desert, CA. The species vary in spinescence: Opuntia basilaris , which has no central or radial spines; Opuntia erinacea , which is densely covered with spines; and Opuntia phaeacantha , which has an intermediate coverage of spines. The role of spines was tested by removing spines from stems of O. erinacea . PFD interception was similar for both O. basilaris and O. phaeacantha , and about three times that for densely spined O. erinacea ; removal of spines increased incident PFD three-fold. There were no effects of spines on stem temperatures. Steady-state light-response curves of chlorophyll a fluorescence from PSII indicated that ΦPSII, photochemical quenching (qP) and electron flux within PSII were lower, and non-photochemical quenching was higher, for O. erinacea in comparison to the other two species with less spines. After 2 months, qP was higher and electron flux lower, and xanthophyll pigment pool size was higher, for stems from which spines had been removed compared with intact stems. These three species allocate different amounts of biomass to spines, resulting in species-specific PFD interception, PSII photochemistry and xanthophyll pigment pool size, which may help maintain rates of photosynthesis during the hot, dry Mojave Desert summer.  相似文献

The buccal glands of adults of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey Geotria australis consist of a pair of small, bean-shaped, hollow sacs, embedded within the basilaris muscle in the region below the eyes and to either side of the piston cartilage. Each gland, which is lined by a simple columnar epithelium and surrounded by an incomplete layer of skeletal muscle, discharges its contents into the oral cavity via a long, narrow duct. In downstream migrating young adults, the epithelial cells are low columnar, intermediate in electron density, and contain dark-staining inclusions and numerous lipid-like droplets. After saltwater acclimation, the epithelial cells become taller and the numbers of dark-staining inclusions increase whereas those of lipid-like droplets decline. By the end of the marine phase, the epithelium is more folded and now also contains dark and light cells. The ultrastructure of the epithelium shows the characteristics of both apocrine and merocrine secretion. Although intra-epithelial nerve endings were not observed, axons and occasional neurons are present in the lamina propria. Since the skeletal muscle capsule is also well innervated and contains neurons, a local feed-back mechanism may regulate the release of buccal gland fluid by monitoring the luminal pressure. Contractions of the skeletal muscle capsule and movements of the basilaris muscle during feeding would presumably assist the movement of secretion along the duct. The secretion possesses anticoagulating and haemolytic properties.  相似文献

Peroxisomal import receptors bind their cargo proteins in the cytosol and target them to docking and translocation machinery at the peroxisomal membrane (reviewed in ref. 1). The receptors release the cargo proteins into the peroxisomal lumen and, according to the model of cycling receptors, they are supposed to shuttle back to the cytosol. This shuttling of the receptors has been assigned to peroxins including the AAA peroxins Pex1p and Pex6p, as well as the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme Pex4p (reviewed in ref. 2). One possible target for Pex4p is the PTS1 receptor Pex5p, which has recently been shown to be ubiquitinated. Pex1p and Pex6p are both cytosolic and membrane-associated AAA ATPases of the peroxisomal protein import machinery, the exact function of which is still unknown. Here we demonstrate that the AAA peroxins mediate the ATP-dependent dislocation of the peroxisomal targeting signal-1 (PTS1) receptor from the peroxisomal membrane to the cytosol.  相似文献

The gene for Batten disease (CLN3) has been mapped to human chromosome 16 by demonstration of linkage to the haptoglobin locus, and its localization has been further refined using a panel of DNA markers. The aim of this work was to refine the genetic and physical mapping of this disease locus. Genetic linkage analysis was carried out in a larger group of families by using markers for five linked loci. Multipoint analysis indicated a most likely location for CLN3 in the interval between D16S67 and D16S148 (Z = 12.5). Physical mapping of linked markers was carried out using somatic cell hybrid analysis and in situ hybridization. A mouse/human hybrid cell panel containing various segments of chromosome 16 has been constructed. The relative order and physical location of breakpoints in the proximal portion of 16p were determined. Physical mapping in this panel of the markers for the loci flanking CLN3 positioned them to the bands 16p12.1----16p12.3. Fluorescent in situ hybridization of metaphase chromosomes by using these markers positioned them to the region 16p11.2-16p12.1. These results localize CLN3 to an interval of about 2 cM in the region 16p12.  相似文献

Phylogeny, neoteny and growth of the cranial base in hominoids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study tests the hypothesis that there is a general pattern in the growth of the cranial base of Homo sapiens that is 'essentially neotenous' [Gould, 1977]. Juvenile and adult crania of Homo sapiens, Gorilla gorilla, Pan troglodytes and Pongo pygmaeus were studied and the cross-sectional growth curves for 10 measurements made on the cranial base (as viewed in norma basilaris) were compared. The results of this study suggest that relatively simple modifications to the timing or pattern of growth are insufficient to explain the observed morphological differences between the cranial base of modern Homo sapiens and the great apes.  相似文献

Summary Guinea pigs were given horseradish peroxidase intracardially. Examination of the cochlear capillaries 2 to 10 min after the injection revealed that the capillaries of the vascular stria are permeable to the peroxidase whereas the capillaries of the basilar membrane, the spiral ligament, and the spiral prominence are impermeable.

Summary We have used homologous recombination to disrupt the gene which codes for p34 and p31, two polypeptides related to a cAMP-binding protein (CABP1) in Dictyostelium discoideum. By screening a total of 80 independent transformants by Southern blotting, four mutants have been isolated. Two of these mutants were analyzed in detail. Our results indicate that, while a null allele has not been obtained, both mutants express drastically reduced levels of truncated p34 and p31. Phenotypic analysis has demonstrated that both of them grow significantly more slowly than wild-type controls when bacteria are used as a food source. Interestingly, this growth defect is not seen when the cells are cultured axenically. In addition, the mutants possess an altered developmental profile. They complete development approximately 3 h later than wild-type controls. These results indicate that p34 and p3l play roles in both growth and development in this organism.  相似文献

The gross morphology of the cochlear ducts of approximatelyhalf (150) of the living genera of lizards and a third (130)of the living genera of snakes have been studied. The differencesin the structure of the cochlear duct are related to both theacoustical capacities and the taxonomic relationships of certainlizards and snakes. The cochlear duct of lizards consists offairly well joined lagenar and limbic portions. By contrast,the cochlear duct of snakes consists of a lagenar sac somewhatconstricted from the limbus. Each family of lizards has a morphologicallycharacteristic cochlear duct, but taxonomic relationships areindicated by certain anatomical similarities. The cochlear ductof snakes is more primitive than that of lizards, and, unlikelizards, does not exhibit marked specializations of its variousparts. Differences in morphology of the cochlear duct in snakesare much more related to habitat than family. The limbus andpapilla basilaris of snakes regardless of family, are most elongatedin bin rowing species, are only moderately elongated or ovoidin terrestrial species, and are small or reduced in certainarboreal and aquatic species.  相似文献

PX domains have been recently found to act as phosphoinositide binding modules. In the yeast SNARE protein Vam7p, the PX domain binds to PtdIns(3)P and is required for vacuolar targeting. To gain insight into how PX domains function, the solution structure of the ligand-free Vam7p PX domain has been determined by NMR spectroscopy. The Vam7p PX domain has the same overall alpha/beta fold observed in the structures of the ligand-free p47(phox) PX domain and the PtdIns(3)P-bound p40(phox) PX domain, exhibiting several similarities and differences with these two PX domains. Most striking is the similarity between the Vam7p and p40(phox) PX domains in a subset of secondary structure elements despite the low level of sequence identity between them, suggesting that these elements form a conserved core in the PX domain fold. These similarities and the observation that a putative PtdIns(3)P binding site is already formed in the apo Vam7p PX domains suggest that ligand binding does not induce major conformational changes, contrary to what was previously thought. The proposed ligand binding site of the Vam7p PX domain includes basic side chains from the conserved structural core that also participate in PtdIns(3)P binding to the p40(phox) PX domain, and basic side chains from a variable loop that probably inserts into the membrane. These results indicate that PX domains contain a combination of conserved and variable features that allow them to have a common function and at the same time exhibit distinct specificities, mechanisms of regulation, or modes of interaction with effector molecules.  相似文献

调查发现北京地区现分布蜻蜓目均翅亚目昆虫 3科 1 0种 ,其中科的蓝纹与二色异痣为优势种 ,分布最为广泛 ,通过主成分分析 ,湿地内的浮水层植物盖度、挺水层植物盖度、周围植被盖度及沉水层植物盖度是影响它们分布的最主要生态因子 ,各因子的贡献率分别为 3 0 49,2 4 1 4,1 7 45和1 5 2 6%。色科黑色和透顶单脉色主要分布于北京西南部地区及北部山区水流较快、水体较浅、污染度较小的水域。长叶异痣、七条和白扇主要分布在河流和水库湖泊的边缘地带 ,数量相对较少。烟翅绿色、红痣绿色及白狭扇仅在山区发现 ,分布范围较为狭窄。  相似文献

The size and shape of the basicranium (seen in norma basilaris) in Homo, Gorilla, Pan, Pongo, and Australopithecus have been studied by recording the relative disposition of midline and bilateral bony landmarks. Fifteen linear measurements and two angles were used to relate the landmarks. The relatively longer and narrower cranial base of Gorilla, Pan, and Pongo is clearly contrasted with the wider, shorter cranial base in Homo sapiens. When the same observations were made on two “robust” and two “gracile” australopithecine crania, marked differences were found between the taxa. In the two “robust” specimens, the foramen magnum is located relatively further forward, and the axis of the petrous temporal bone is aligned more nearly with the coronal plane than in the two “gracile” crania. The implications of this apparent parallelism in basicranial morphology between Homo sapiens and the “robust” australopithecines are discussed.  相似文献

Although considerable information has emerged on the molecular properties of the p36 target protein its function as well as the possible implications of its tyrosine phosphorylation have remained elusive. Here we show that all sequence segments of p36 published so far can be aligned by homology along the complete sequence of lipocortin, which has been reported recently. This alignment extends beyond multiple Geisow motifs, thought to indicate a sequence principle implicated in Ca2+ and/or lipid binding. While the latter properties are already established for p36 one may expect them also for lipocortin, an inhibitor of phospholipase A2 activity. The process of endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) involved in the degradation of misfolded N-linked glycoproteins utilizes Cdc48p which extracts misfolded glycoproteins from the lumen to the cytosol to present them for deglycosylation and degradation. Pkc1p has been identified as a component of the ERAD pathway, because deletion of the pkc1 gene impairs ERAD and causes accumulation of CPY* in the lumen of the ER, most probably because of the mislocalization of Cdc48p. In addition, we show that Cdc48p interacts in the cytosol with the deglycosylation enzyme, PNGase, only when Cdc48p is associated with a misfolded glycoprotein.  相似文献

Among the human genome, p53 is one of the first tumor suppressor genes to be discovered. It has a wide range of functions covering cell cycle control, apoptosis, genome integrity maintenance, metabolism, fertility, cellular reprogramming and autophagy. Although different possible underlying mechanisms for p53 regulation have been proposed for decades, none of them is conclusive. While much literature focuses on the importance of individual post-translational modifications, further explorations indicate a new layer of p53 coordination through the interplay of the modifications, which builds up a complex 'network'. This review focuses on the necessity, characteristics and mechanisms of the crosstalk among post-translational modifications and its effects on the precise and selective behavior of p53.  相似文献

MDg3 is a family of mobile dispersed genetic elements represented by 15 copies in the haploid genome of D. melanogaster and flanked, like other similar elements, by the regions of homology. In the present work, these regions of mdg3 have been sequenced. The existence of perfect direct repeats 268 base pairs long has been demonstrated. Inverted repeats are located on the gene distal side of them. It is possible to construct a perfect 8 b.p. palindrome or a slightly mismatched 18 b.p. palindrome. The inverted repeats are flanked by two short 5 b.p. direct repeats.  相似文献
