Microscopic structures (petrofilaments) may develop during palynological laboratory processing procedures that are superficially similar to secondary wall thickenings and elaters. These filaments form from angular bodies that resemble fungal spores and resin bodies. The angular bodies are a type of hydrocarbon called asphaltene and extrude the filaments when compounds in the bodies react with solvents in the mounting medium. They may be misinterpreted as fossils and so are illustrated here for the first time in the published literature.  相似文献

An analysis of the elastic behavior of the lung perivascular interstitial space during interstitial fluid accumulation is presented. Fluid accumulation must deform the lung parenchyma and vascular walls that form the interstitial space boundaries. The deformations of these boundaries are predicted from previously published data on the elastic properties of the boundary materials. The analysis gives the relationships among the elastic properties of the boundaries, the compliance of the interstitium, the lung volume, and the lung elastic recoil pressure. Values of the interstitial compliance are predicted to decrease with increasing lung recoil pressure and are dependent on the lung pressure-volume history. At low recoil pressures over 70% of the interstitial compliance results from deformation of the parenchyma. As the recoil pressure increases, either with increasing lung volume or due to the lung pressure-volume history, the contributions of the parenchymal and vascular wall deformations become similar. The predictions are generally consistent with published data on interstitial compliance obtained from measurements of isolated lung weight gain during vascular fluid transudation. This correlation suggests that the elastic behavior of the interstitial space can be accounted for by the known elastic properties of the boundary materials.  相似文献

Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled at six stations in the Athabasca River near Ft. Mackay, Alberta, during the 1977 open water season. Fluctuating discharge of the river effected changes in the nature of the sediments as well as the abundance and composition of invertebrate communities. During most of the summer, coarse sand was dominated by chironomids of the Harnischia complex and an undescribed Orthocladiinae. Stoneflies and mayflies invaded the coarse sand in autumn when decreasing discharge led to greater stability of the substrate. The invertebrate fauna of silt and mud resembled that of similar substrates in lakes. Bedrock supported communities similar to those of stony streams. The average abundances of invertebrates on sand and mud were similar but estimates from mud were somewhat more variable. These results are discussed with respect to substrate stability and compared with published records from other large rivers.  相似文献

The cytologic features of a bronchial granular-cell tumor clinically mimicking a bronchogenic carcinoma are presented. Distinctive granular cells similar to the main cellular components of the surgical specimen were found in abundance in bronchial brushings and washings obtained during bronchoscopy. Our findings and conclusions confirm previously published studies. Granular-cell tumors of the bronchus can easily be diagnosed on cytologic examination if the entity is considered in the differential diagnosis of clinically suspected lung tumors.  相似文献

Female sexual arousal: genital anatomy and orgasm in intercourse   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In men and women sexual arousal culminates in orgasm, with female orgasm solely from sexual intercourse often regarded as a unique feature of human sexuality. However, orgasm from sexual intercourse occurs more reliably in men than in women, likely reflecting the different types of physical stimulation men and women require for orgasm. In men, orgasms are under strong selective pressure as orgasms are coupled with ejaculation and thus contribute to male reproductive success. By contrast, women's orgasms in intercourse are highly variable and are under little selective pressure as they are not a reproductive necessity. The proximal mechanisms producing variability in women's orgasms are little understood. In 1924 Marie Bonaparte proposed that a shorter distance between a woman's clitoris and her urethral meatus (CUMD) increased her likelihood of experiencing orgasm in intercourse. She based this on her published data that were never statistically analyzed. In 1940 Landis and colleagues published similar data suggesting the same relationship, but these data too were never fully analyzed. We analyzed raw data from these two studies and found that both demonstrate a strong inverse relationship between CUMD and orgasm during intercourse. Unresolved is whether this increased likelihood of orgasm with shorter CUMD reflects increased penile–clitoral contact during sexual intercourse or increased penile stimulation of internal aspects of the clitoris. CUMD likely reflects prenatal androgen exposure, with higher androgen levels producing larger distances. Thus these results suggest that women exposed to lower levels of prenatal androgens are more likely to experience orgasm during sexual intercourse.  相似文献

We examined the distribution, abundance and density of the kelp gull, at Admiralty Bay during three austral summers from 2002/03 to 2004/05 and compared our results with previously published data. All ice free areas within the bay were surveyed, and nests were individually marked with a hand-held GPS receiver and subsequently plotted on a geographical chart using ArcView (ESRI 2001). Statistical analysis demonstrated that the means are similar for all time periods, suggesting that the population of kelp gulls has remained unchanged in Admiralty Bay since summer of 1978/79 (Jablonski 1986).  相似文献

Previous studies indicate most free-living avian species in both extreme and temperate environments seasonally modulate the adrenocortical responses to acute stress, and those breeding in harsh environments always express reduced adrenocortical responses, which may allow them to obtain maximal reproductive success. However, recent investigations showing a human commensal species, house sparrows (Passer domesticus), expressed similar corticosterone (CORT) responses in both benign and harsh environments. In this study, focusing on another human commensal species, Eurasian tree sparrows (P. montanus), we examined the adrenocortical response to acute stress in lowland populations, among the early and late breeding, the prebasic molt, and the wintering stages, and compared them with previously published data from populations on the Tibetan Plateau. Our results show: (1) similar to highland Eurasian tree sparrows, lowland populations show no differences in baseline CORT levels among life history stages, and the stress-induced CORT (maximal CORT, total and corrected integrated CORT) levels are lower during the early breeding and the prebasic molt stages than those in the late breeding and the wintering stages; (2) highland Eurasian tree sparrows show stronger adrenocortical responses during the prebasic molt stage than lowland populations, whereas there are no differences between the early and the breeding stages (except for maximal CORT). Our results suggest that Eurasian tree sparrows from both harsh and benign environments have similar patterns of adrenocortical responses in the breeding stage, whereas they are different in the prebasic molt stage. In highland birds, the increased maximal CORT levels during the late breeding and the small increases in adrenocortical responses during the prebasic molt are interesting but remain unexplained.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the efficiency of utilization of radiant energy by phytoplankton photosynthesis in a tropical embayment followed the same pattern as that of primary production. showing that incident radiation did not limit phytoplankton production. Peak values in primary production and photosynthetic efficiency coincided with periods of nutrient enrichment caused either by upwelling during the southwest monsoon or by run-off during the northeast, monsoon. A world-wide comparison of published data on photosynthetic efficiencies in different latitudes showed that higher efficiency is achieved in the tropics, where the values are similar to those observed on phytoplankton cultures. Based on the maximum efficiency of photosynthesis attained, three regimes can be recognized in tropical waters: 1) regions of upwelling with a maximum of 6%,. 2) coastal bays with 0.7%, 3) oceanic regions with 0.24%.  相似文献

Evidence that conserved developmental gene-regulatory networks can change as a unit during deutersostome evolution emerges from a study published in BMC Biology. This shows that genes consistently expressed in anterior brain patterning in hemichordates and chordates are expressed in a similar spatial pattern in another deuterostome, an asteroid echinoderm (sea star), but in a completely different developmental context (the animal-vegetal axis). This observation has implications for hypotheses on the type of development present in the deuterostome common ancestor.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Estimating reproductive success for birds with precocial young can be difficult because chicks leave nests soon after hatching and individuals or broods can be difficult to track. Researchers often turn to estimating survival during the prefledging period and, though effective, mark-recapture based approaches are not always feasible due to cost, time, and animal welfare concerns. Using a threatened population of Piping Plovers ( Charadrius melodus ) that breeds along the Missouri River, we present an approach for estimating chick survival during the prefledging period using long-term (1993–2005), count-based, age-class data. We used a modified catch-curve analysis, and data collected during three 5-day sampling periods near the middle of the breeding season. The approach has several ecological and statistical assumptions and our analyses were designed to minimize the probability of violating those assumptions. For example, limiting the sampling periods to only 5 days gave reasonable assurance that population size was stable during the sampling period. Annual daily survival estimates ranged from 0.825 (SD = 0.03) to 0.931 (0.02) depending on year and sampling period, with these estimates assuming constant survival during the prefledging period and no change in the age structure of the population. The average probability of survival to fledging ranged from 0.126 to 0.188. Our results are similar to other published estimates for this species in similar habitats. This method of estimating chick survival may be useful for a variety of precocial bird species when mark-recapture methods are not feasible and only count-based age class data are available.  相似文献

The published information on the use of enzymes belonging to a large family of peroxidases of plant and fungal origin as the catalysts of lignin and its model compound oxidation by hydrogen peroxide are reviewed. The structures and the mechanism of the catalytic action of these enzymes are comparatively considered. The enzymes have similar structures; however, the enzymes of plant origin have higher stabilities and pH optima. It was concluded that further studies of the effect of the functional nature, polymolecular properties, and regularities of the redox conversions during the catalytic oxidation of plant lignins by plant peroxidases are promising.  相似文献

Fish respiration rates that are presumed to represent standard metabolic rates (SMR) may sometimes include an unspecified energy expenditure associated with activity and digestion. This situation may introduce a bias in bioenergetics models because standard metabolism, digestion, and activity may not be affected by the same environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to (1) develop a SMR model for juvenile yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill), that represent the minimum energy expenditure required to maintain life and (2) compare the results of this study with published perch metabolic rates and bioenergetics models. SMR was estimated for yellow perch over a range of body␣mass (4.4–24.7 g) and water temperature (12–20°C). The intercept of the relationship between fish respiration and swimming velocity obtained during forced swimming experiments was used to determine SMR. SMR estimated by the present study were comparable to values presented by two published studies on Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis L. However, estimated SMR were 4.1–20.9 times lower than values of a third respirometry study and predictions of bioenergetics models for perch. The present study suggests that published SMR models may sometimes include a significant fraction of energy expenditures (39.2–75.9%) associated with digestion and activity. This may complicate the implementation and the interpretation of fish bioenergetics models. The present study indicates that the intercept of respiration-velocity relationships and long-term respiration rates during starvation experiments may provide similar and reliable SMR values.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopy revealed a series of structural changes that occur in the fat body of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, during the fifth, i.e. the final, larval stadium. At each developmental stage studied, the cells of the fat body were homogeneous in structure. We found no evidence suggesting the presence of more than one type of fat body cell. Our structural data are consistent with published observations on biochemical activities of M. sexta fat body at particular developmental stages. Specific points of agreement include: (a) acquisition of Golgi complex (GC) and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) concomitant with the time of major protein production; (b) loss of many cellular organelles (such as GC and RER) as protein production drastically decreases; (c) accumulation of protein granules and urate granules after the onset of wandering (i.e. during the pre-pupal period); (d) accumulation of lipid and glycogen throughout the feeding period. In addition we found that (a) the plasma membrane reticular system (PMRS) developed during the period when protein secretion was great; (b) the PMRS was lost abruptly at the onset of wandering; and (c) the nucleus changed in shape from being roughly spherical to elliptoid in the pre-pupal stage. We found that the structure of M. sexta fat body is similar to that published for other Lepidoptera. However, it differs from that of Heliothis zea in that regional differences are not obviously apparent.  相似文献

Genomic and genetic methods allow investigation of how frequently the same genes are used by different populations during adaptive evolution, yielding insights into the predictability of evolution at the genetic level. We estimated the probability of gene reuse in parallel and convergent phenotypic evolution in nature using data from published studies. The estimates are surprisingly high, with mean probabilities of 0.32 for genetic mapping studies and 0.55 for candidate gene studies. The probability declines with increasing age of the common ancestor of compared taxa, from about 0.8 for young nodes to 0.1–0.4 for the oldest nodes in our study. Probability of gene reuse is higher when populations begin from the same ancestor (genetic parallelism) than when they begin from divergent ancestors (genetic convergence). Our estimates are broadly consistent with genomic estimates of gene reuse during repeated adaptation to similar environments, but most genomic studies lack data on phenotypic traits affected. Frequent reuse of the same genes during repeated phenotypic evolution suggests that strong biases and constraints affect adaptive evolution, resulting in changes at a relatively small subset of available genes. Declines in the probability of gene reuse with increasing age suggest that these biases diverge with time.  相似文献

Summary Thirteen species of antarctic asteroids were collected in McMurdo Sound during the austral spring and summer of 1984–1985 and 1985–1986. Variability in the energetic composition of the body wall, pyloric cecum, and gonad was directly related to differences in levels of protein, carbohydrate, lipid and ash in these tissue types. Reproductive output was generally similar between males and females when expressed in gravimetric units. When considered in energy units, females generally had greater reproductive output than males. Reproductive output values of antarctic asteroids were similar to published values for temperate, tropical, and subpolar species. In a given year, the majority of antarctic asteroids have the greatest energy resources in the body wall, a tissue representing a long-term energy investment. Lesser amounts of energy are devoted to annual nutrient storage (pyloric ceca) and reproduction (gonads).  相似文献

Phylogeny and substitution rates of angiosperm actin genes   总被引:13,自引:1,他引:12  
Forty-four actin genes from five angiosperm species were PCR-amplified, cloned, and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis of 34 of these actins, along with those previously published, indicates that angiosperm actin genes are monophyletic and underwent several duplications during evolution. Orthologues have been identified between Solanaceae species, as well as between Solanaceae species and soybean. These sequences were used to calculate nucleotide substitution rates. The synonymous rate (6.96 x 10(-9) substitutions/site/year) is similar to that of other nuclear protein-coding genes, but the nonsynonymous rate (0.19 x 10(-9) substitutions/site/year) is 6-19 times higher than that of mammalian actin genes. Relative rate tests indicate that actin genes are evolving at similar rates in monocots and in dicots. Evidence is also presented that some members of the maize actin multigene family have been involved in gene conversion events, that the potato genome contains 24 +/- 12 actin genes, and that potato and tomato diverged 11.6 +/- 3.6 MYA.   相似文献

Beyond its role as a response to starvation, autophagy has been increasingly implicated as part of the normal mechanisms regulating growth and remodeling of various cells and tissues during development. In recently published work we demonstrate that autophagy promotes synaptic development of the Drosophila larval neuromuscular junction (NMJ). We find that autophagy acts by downregulating an E3 ubiquitin ligase, Highwire (Hiw), which limits NMJ growth via a MAPKKK pathway. A similar role for autophagy in the synaptic remodeling that occurs during learning and memory remains an intriguing possibility.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to estimate the former below- and aboveground biomass during the Last Pleniglacial (22,000 cal yr BP) and during the Holocene climatic optimum, the Atlantic Period (7,000 cal yr BP). Vegetation distributions and soil conditions during these periods were reconstructed according to published literature. Using the present-day bio-masses of similar (but not identical) vegetation and soil types as analogues, estimates of the terrestrial biomass were made for 22,000 and 7,000 cal yr BP. Biomass was low during the Pleniglacial, representing only 5.0 to 12.5 Gt. This reflects weak soil development under cold climatic conditions, combined with soil erosion due to severe frost and strong wind. The results are compared with other biomass reconstructions for the Pleniglacial. The values for terrestrial biomass of the Pleniglacial presented in this paper are much lower than the results of the various studies for this time slice. These differences are likely to be related to the method applied. Biomass was high during the Holocene climatic optimum around 7,000 cal yr BP, representing 261 to 325 Gt compared to 232 to 273 Gt in the present potential situation and 165 to 197 Gt in the present-day real situation. This reflects intensive soil development under warm and moist conditions during the climatic optimum of the Holocene. These results demonstrate the fluctuation of C-content in terrestrial ecosystems since the Last Glacial Maximum on the European continent.  相似文献
