Facultative diapause of Eotetranychus smithi appears to occur at the egg stage and is induced by temperatures ≤17.5 °C, independent of photoperiod. However, the effect of thermoperiod on the induction of diapause remains unclear. To answer this question, we exposed female E. smithi to various thermoperiods under constant light conditions. First, we found that the deposition order of eggs affected the incidence of diapause: the first eggs (exclusively males) tended to avert diapause compared with the second and third eggs (most of them are females), possibly because of the sex of the eggs. Next, the incidence of diapause of the second eggs decreased with shortening of the cryophase, which was associated with an increase of the average temperature, and it showed clear long‐day‐type thermoperiodic response curves. However, this species does not sense the ratio of day (thermophase) to night (cryophase) of a given thermoperiod. Short thermoperiods did not increase the incidence of diapause, but rather precluded the entry into diapause. We detected no sign of the involvement of the circadian system in diapause induction in the thermoperiodic Nanda–Hamner protocol. We conclude that diapause induction of E. smithi does not involve the circadian system, and thus does not show thermoperiodism. Diapause induction under the various thermoperiodic conditions tested in the present study appears to be derived from the temperature itself. E. smithi is an exceptional species that relies on temperature alone to induce diapause.  相似文献

Insects can increase their resistance to cold stress by prior exposure to non-lethal cold temperatures. Here, we investigated the supercooling capacity and survival of eggs, 3rd and 5th instar larvae, and pupae of Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) during CA, and responses to various pre-treatment protocols, including constant temperatures, thermoperiods, and RCH, RHH, RCH + RHH and RHH + RCH combined with thermoperiods. Only acclimated eggs demonstrated a significant decrease in SCP, from −20.7 ± 0.3 to −22.9 ± 0.3 °C, among all experimental groups compared to non-acclimated stages. Survival increased by 17.5% for eggs, 40.0% and 13.3% for 3rd and 5th instar larvae, and by 20.0% for pupae after CA. Compared to controls, survival of eggs under the conditions of thermoperiod (5:15 °C), thermoperiod (5:15 °C) + RHH, and thermoperiod (5:15, 10:20, and 15:25 °C) + RCH significantly increased. In addition, survival of 3rd and 5th instar larvae and pupae increased under the conditions of thermoperiod (5:15 °C) and thermoperiod (5:15 °C) + RCH, possibly due to the induction of heat shock proteins or cryoprotectants. However, the pre-treatments of thermoperiod + RCH + RHH and thermoperiod + RHH + RCH did not significantly enhance survival of any developmental stage. These adaptive responses may allow S. exigua to enhance supercooling capacity and survival in response to seasonal or unexpected diurnal decreases in environmental temperatures.  相似文献

A constant warm thermoperiod maintains ovarian quiescence in the lizard Lacerta vivipara, whereas a 4-month artificial hibernation rapidly induces synchronized vitellogenesis after transfer to warmth. The present study examined the possibility of a thermoperiodic regulation of the ovarian cycle and the formal properties of an internal temporal program. These questions were addressed using 24-hr thermoperiodic conditions that combined a long or a short thermophase (6 or 2 hr of basking) with a warm (19-21 degrees C), a cool (5-15 degrees C), or a cold (3-7 degrees C) cryophase. Lizards were exposed to the natural photocycle or to LD 12:12. Occurrence and timing of vitellogenesis completion were monitored using immunodetection of plasma vitellogenin and laparotomies. Cold remained stimulatory when given intermittently with a 24-hr periodicity. However, under long-thermophase conditions, lizards responded poorly to cool cryophases but fully to cold ones (72.7-100% vitellogenesis). Thus a certain amount of cold must be provided during each 24-hr cycle in order to be effective through the succession of thermocycles. Reduction of the daily heat input from 6 to 2 hr modulated the stimulating effects of cold cryophases: The median date for the beginning of vitellogenesis occurred 1 month earlier, but the number of responding females decreased from 100% to 40%. The thermoperiodic regulation of the ovarian cycle also relies upon a precise heat-cold balance per nycthemeral unit. This ensures the entrainment of an internal rhythm, since the timing of reproductive responses varies with the date of transfer from the inhibitory warm thermoperiod to the inducing thermoperiod (long thermophase, cold cryophase). At least half the females started vitellogenesis within 1-2 months after a late transfer (winter solstice) instead of 6 months after an early one (autumn equinox), and the median date for onset differed by 1 month between the two groups. However, autumn transfer was the only one to induce a group response in close agreement with the natural timing.  相似文献

The intensity of adult diapause in Pyrrhocoris apterus was measured in two series of experiments as the duration of pre-oviposition period at a constant temperature of 25 degrees C after transfer from short (12L:12D) to long day conditions (18L:6D). Higher diapause intensity was induced with a thermoperiod than at constant temperatures. After the induction throughout larval instars 3-5 and during 4 weeks of adult life at short days and a thermoperiod of 25/15 degrees C the pre-oviposition period was 30+/-4 and 26+/-3 days. After induction at constant 25 degrees C the pre-oviposition period was 22+/-3 and 23+/-4 days, while after induction at constant 20 degrees C it was 17+/-4 and 19+/-4 days. Induction at a lower constant temperature of 20 degrees C was thus followed by a less intense diapause than the induction at a higher constant temperature of 25 degrees C. These counterintuitive results are discussed. The oxygen consumption rate measured at experimental temperatures prior to transfer from short to long days was higher at thermoperiodic conditions than at constant temperatures and it was similar at constant 20 and 25 degrees C. Thus, the oxygen consumption rate measured prior to the transfer was highest (indication of the least intense diapause) in the insects that showed later, after the transfer to long days, the longest pre-oviposition period (indication of the most intense diapause). Within the first two days after transfer to constant 25 degrees C, oxygen consumption rate measured at 25 degrees C decreased in the thermoperiodic insects, while it transiently increased in insects from constant 20 degrees C. Two days and later after the transfer, oxygen consumption rate was similar in all groups. Cold hardiness was not correlated with diapause intensity. The low lethal temperature in diapausing insects was correlated with the night temperature during diapause induction.  相似文献

To examine the relationship between cooling rate and cold hardiness in eggs of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, the survival rates and cryoprotectant levels of three embryonic developmental stages were measured at different cooling rates (from 0.05 to 0.8 degrees C min(-1)) in acclimated and non-acclimated eggs. Egg survival rate increased with decreasing cooling rate. The concentration of cryoprotectants (myo-inositol, trehalose, mannitol, glycerol, and sorbitol) increased in non-acclimated eggs, but varied significantly in response to different cooling rates in acclimated eggs. The acclimation process (5 degrees C for 3 days) did not increase eggs resistance to quick cooling ("plunge" cooling and 0.8 degrees C min(-1)). Earlier stage embryos were much more sensitive than later stage embryos to the same cooling rates. Time spent at subzero temperatures also had a strong influence on egg survival.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and thermoperiod on larval development and the induction of diapause were investigated in the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis. Developmental threshold temperatures characteristic of the first four larval instars were estimated under both thermoperiods and constant temperatures. Threshold values were similar under the two conditions, but the 4th-larval instar was shown to display a significantly lower developmental threshold temperature than was characteristic of the earlier instars. Although developmental times (days per instar) were not greatly affected by fluctuating temperature regimes, the quantity of growth (weight, head width) during the 4th and 5th (last) stadia was found to be much greater under thermoperiodic regimes than under comparable constant temperature conditions. By means of thermoperiodic regimes having identical mean temperatures but different cryophase durations, it was demonstrated that the induction of diapause is dependent on the duration of the cryophase rather than on the mean temperature of the thermoperiod. To be effective, the cryophase must be colder than the insect's thermoperiodic response threshold. It was also demonstrated that thermoperiodic responses that are readily produced under continuously dark rearing conditions are not manifested under continuous light.  相似文献

The cold hardiness of arthropods is an important characteristic associated with overwintering success. Cold‐tolerant stages affect overwintering strategy, especially in arthropods that continuously feed on evergreen host plants in temperate regions. However, cold hardiness to mildly low temperature is rarely investigated. In the present study, we estimate the stage‐specific cold hardiness of a population of the spider mite Stigmaeopsis longus (Saito) (Acari: Tetranychidae) occurring on evergreen Sasa bamboo in a temperate area (Kochi City, southwestern Japan). Individuals of each stage developing under diapause‐inducing conditions (LD 10 : 14 h at 20 °C) are maintained at 4 °C (approximating the mean daily minimum temperature for December in Kochi City) for 30 days (eggs are cooled immediately, without short‐day development first). They are then returned to the initial conditions to assess survival rates. The survival rate of adult females (i.e. the diapausing stage) is high (99.5%), as is that of adult males and deutonymphs of both sexes (84.2–98.7% and 89.7–89.8%, respectively). The survival rate of mobile immature stages tends to increase toward adulthood in both sexes, whereas the survival rate of the eggs and quiescent stages is extremely low (16–23% and 0–20%, respectively). The poor cold hardiness of the eggs and quiescent stages presumably prevents the normal development of immature individuals during winter.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. For many species of insect, cold hardiness is an important trait that enables a population to develop in the next season and to extend its range. To elucidate the role of cold hardiness of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria L. in its outbreak and distribution areas, egg cold hardiness was examined in locusts derived from four locations from latitude 18°23'N to latitude 41°10'N in eastern China.
2. The supercooling points of eggs from different geographic populations did not differ significantly for the first development stage, with an average ± SE of −24.5 ± 0.51 °C, or for the second stage, −22.06 ± 0.68 °C, however there was a significant difference for the embryonic development phase among the four geographical populations. The egg supercooling point increased gradually from neonatal egg to old egg; eggs prior to hatching always had a much higher supercooling point.
3. Comparisons of the cold hardiness of four populations were carried out by validating the close correlation between latitude and the effects of cold on hatching, low lethal temperature (Ltemp50), and low lethal time (Ltime50). There were significant differences among the four populations; the northern population was more cold hardy than the southern population, and the two mid-latitude populations were intermediately cold hardy.
4. The cold hardiness of all populations was enhanced to various degrees by short-term cold acclimation at 0 °C and 5 °C. For most populations, a 2-day acclimation period seemed to be optimal.  相似文献

The effect of various combinations of photoperiod and temperature on the induction and termination of the mature larval diapause of a Missouri strain of the southwestern corn borer. Diatraea grandiosella, was examined. Larval exposure to regimes in which the low phase of a 30°:23°C thermoperiod coincided with a scotophase of 10 to 14 hr duration led to high incidence of diapause. Larval exposure to 30°:24°C, 33°:21°C, and 36°:18°C thermoperiods with half cycles of 12 hr in continuous darkness yielded a diapause incidence of 16%, 22%, and 59%, respectively, whereas exposure to a 30°:24°C thermoperiod in continuous illumination yielded a completely nondiapause generation. Larval exposure to one of a series of 36°:18°C thermoperiods in which the duration of the high phase was increased in 2 hr increments from 0 to 24 hr in continuous darkness showed that “short-day” thermoperiods yielded a high incidence of diapause. However, no clearly defined critical thermoperiod was observed. An examination of photoperiodic and thermoperiodic effects on diapause development showed that, in general, those combinations of temperature and light cycles which were diapause inductive also retarded diapause development. The relationship between seasonal photoperiods and thermoperiods in southeastern Missouri was examined.  相似文献

Meristems of many pear genotypes can be successfully cryopreserved following 1 week of cold acclimation, but an equal number do not survive the process or have very little regrowth. This study compared commonly used cold acclimation protocols to determine whether the cold acclimation technique used affected the cold hardiness of shoots or the regrowth of cryopreserved meristems. In vitro-grown pear (Pyrus L.) shoots were cold acclimated for up to 16 weeks, then either the shoot tips were tested for cold hardiness or the meristems were cryopreserved by controlled freezing. Cold acclimation consisted of alternating temperatures (22 degrees C with light/-1 degrees C darkness with various photo- and thermoperiods) or a constant temperature (4 degrees C with an 8-h photoperiod or darkness). Compared with nonacclimated controls, both alternating- and constant-temperature acclimation significantly improved postcryopreservation regrowth of P. cordata Desv. and P. pashia Buch. -Ham. ex D. Don meristems. Alternating-temperature acclimation combined with either an 8-h photoperiod or darkness was significantly better than constant-temperature acclimation. Alternating-temperature shoot acclimation for 2 to 5 weeks significantly increased postcryopreservation meristem regrowth, and recovery remained high for up to 15 weeks acclimation. Postcryopreservation meristem regrowth increased with 1 to 5 weeks of constant-temperature acclimation and then declined with longer acclimation. Shoot cold hardiness varied with the acclimation procedure. The LT(50) of shoots acclimated for 10 weeks with alternating temperatures was -25 degrees C; that with constant temperature was -14.7 degrees C; and that of the nonacclimated control was -10 degrees C. Less frequent transfer of cultures also improved acclimation of shoots. Shoots grown without transfer to fresh medium for 6-12 weeks had higher postcryopreservation recovery with shorter periods of acclimation than shoots with a 3-week transfer cycle.  相似文献

A 12-hr dark period, at a temperature high enough to permit time measurement to occur, is necessary for maximal induction of larval diapause in the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis. In the present study, induction of diapause only occurred in a periodic environment. This was in the form of certain (1) light-dark (LD) cycles at a constant temperature; (2) thermoperiods in constant darkness (DD), but not constant illumination (LL); and (3) LD cycles with concurrent thermoperiods. A light-break experiment protocol, in which the pulses systematically scan the cold and warm phases of a thermoperiod in DD, is discussed as a way of helping clarify how seasonal time measurement is effected in Ostrinia.  相似文献

The effects of thermoperiods on diapause induction under continuous darkness (DD), continuous light (LL), and an L12:D12 photoperiod were investigated in the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a short‐day species. Diapause could be induced by thermoperiod under both LL and DD; however, in the range of 24–30 °C, lower incidences of diapause were observed under LL than under DD. The critical cryophase was found to be dependent on the mean temperature of the thermoperiod applied. Although the thermoperiodic response pattern was similar under LL and DD, the incidence of diapause was higher under LL when the duration of the cryophase did not exceed 12 h. In contrast, when the duration of the cryophase was longer than 12 h, the incidence of diapause under LL was lower or equal to that under DD. When a thermoperiod of 24 °C (cryophase) and 28 °C (thermophase) was applied, the incidence of diapause was higher under LL than under DD, regardless of the duration of the cryophase. Thermoperiodic responses under a photoperiod of L12:D12 and under DD further revealed that induction of diapause was strongly influenced by the photophase temperature. Moreover, the incidence of diapause was lower when the thermophase coincided with the photophase than when the cryophase coincided with the photophase.  相似文献

Cold hardiness of eggs and neonate larvae of the yellow-spotted longicorn beetle, Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) was examined using six geographical populations in Japan. Particular attention was paid to cold hardiness of eggs and neonate larvae of the subtropical population (Ishigaki), because the east Japan populations are considered to have been introduced from a subtropical area, and the overwintering stage in the east Japan populations is incidentally shifted from the original mature larval stage to the egg or neonate larval stages. When the eggs were exposed to low temperatures for 1 h, the decrease in hatchability became significant at –12°C in the southernmost two populations (Ishigaki and Naze), and at –16°C in the northern populations. After 1 h exposure to –20°C, few eggs could hatch in the Ishigaki population, whereas 27–55% of the eggs survived in the northern populations. Pre-chilling of the eggs at 10°C for 10 days enhanced the cold hardiness in all populations. This effect was particularly distinct in the subtropical population; the eggs of the Ishigaki population became as cold hardy as those of the northern populations after acclimation. These results suggest that the subtropical population is capable of establishing itself in east Japan, where the winter is cold.  相似文献

The interaction of thermoperiod and photoperiod in their influence on the reproductive maturation of females and on the induction of the maternal effect determining larval diapause of the progeny of the blowfly, Calliphora vicina, was first investigated under laboratory conditions. Under the combination of a day length of 12 h with a thermoperiod (the alternation of 12 h long periods with temperatures of 10 and 20°C) the reproductive maturation of females was faster than at the corresponding mean constant temperature of 15°C. Under the “natural” thermoperiod, when the period with a temperature of 10°C coincided with “night-time” (the dark phase of the diurnal light-dark cycle) the maturation of females was slower than that under the “inverted” thermoperiod, when the period with a temperature of 10°C coincided with “day-time” (the light phase of the diurnal light-dark cycle). The proportion of diapausing individuals was maximal in the progeny of females kept at 20°C and decreased with the increase in temperature. Under thermoperiods (the alternations of 12 h long periods with temperatures of 20 and 26°C) the proportion of diapausing progeny was lower than that under the corresponding mean constant temperature of 23°C, but under the inverted thermoperiod with a high night temperature this effect was much stronger. In combination with the results of our previous studies, these data support the hypothesis that the effects of “night” and “day” temperatures are substantially different only when the thermal response interacts with a strong photoperiodic response.  相似文献

The influence of short day and low temperature on cold acclimation of A. crispa (Ait.) Pursh, A. glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. and A. rubra Bong, was investigated. Two clones of each species originating from in vitro propagation were exposed to three daylength/temperature treatments. Periodically plantlets were exposed to controlled freezing temperature in order to evaluate their level of frost hardiness.
Short day (SD) and cold temperature (CT) and long day (LD) and cold temperature (CT) were the most effective treatments for the development of frost hardiness in shoots and roots of the three species tested. Short day (SD) and warm temperature (WT) induced a significant increase in hardiness in shoots of all three species. However, this treatment did not trigger root hardening. A. crispa was found to be the hardiest species followed by A. glutinosa and A. rubra . Intraspecific variation was observed between the two A. glutinosa clones. A glutinosa clone AG8, a Russian provenance, showed a greater freezing resistance than A. glutinosa clone AG2, a German provenance.  相似文献

In vitro-grown saskatoon berry (Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt.) plantlets were exposed to various hormonal treatments, dormancy-inducing and cold acclimation conditions to determine if this in vitro system would be viable for dormancy/hardiness studies in woody plants. Low temperature induced significant hardiness levels in plantlets to ?27°C after 6 weeks at 4°C but did not approach liquid nitrogen levels of fully hardened, field-grown buds. Control plantlets were consistently killed at ?5°C throughout this period. Significant hardiness was attained under both short and long day/low temperature conditions; however, hardiness was reduced under continuous light or dark treatments. A pre-exposure to the typical short photoperiod regime of woody plants did not significantly increase the rate of acclimation in these plantlets. The presence/absence of phytohormones in the media have a pronounced influence on the ability of plantlets to cold acclimate. Hormone-free media increased hardiness to ?10.5°C after 2 weeks in treatment. Addition of abscisic acid (ABA) increased cold hardiness levels (?12°C) while addition of benzylaminopurine (BAP) to this hormone-free media decreased hardiness to ?5.3°C. A combination of BAP and ABA treatments produced LT50 values intermediate between individual applications of either hormone. Conversely, α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) could not counteract the ABA-induced hardiness. ABA treatments alone were not able to harden plantlets to the extent attained under low temperature acclimation conditions. Further, ABA could not maintain the hardiness levels of cold-acclimating treatments and plantlets de-acclimated to ?9°C in BAP + ABA media. Subculturing in itself significantly elevated cold hardiness in plantlets to ?9°C on BAP + NAA media within 3 days after subculture and thereafter plantlets dehardened to ?5°C. While tissue culture has value in specific cases, caution should be taken when using tissue-cultured plantlets as a system to evaluate environmental regulation of cold acclimation in woody plants, in part, due to the influence of phytohormones in the media.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of thermoperiods on diapause induction in continuous darkness or under a 12 : 12 h LD photoperiod were investigated in the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly, a typical short‐day species. The diapause response curves both at different constant temperatures and at the thermocycle of format CT x: (24 ? x) h (16 : 28 °C) under continuously dark rearing conditions showed that the incidence of diapause depended mainly on whether or not the mean temperature was ≤20 °C or >20 °C. If the mean temperature was ≤20 °C, all individuals entered diapause; if >20 °C, the incidence of diapause declined gradually with increasing mean temperatures. The thermocycle (CT 12 : 12 h) with a series of different cryophases (8–22 °C) and thermophases (24–32 °C) under continuous darkness demonstrated a cryophase response threshold temperature of approximately 19 °C and a thermophase response threshold temperature of approximately 31 °C. Thermoperiodic amplitude (temperature difference between cryophase and thermophase) was shown to have a significant influence on diapause induction at the mean temperatures of 22, 23 and 24 °C, but not at ≥25 °C. Thermoperiodic responses under LD 12 : 12 h clearly showed that the incidence of diapause was influenced strongly by the photophase temperature. The thermoperiod under LD 12 : 12 h induced a much lower incidence of diapause than the thermoperiod with the same temperature in continuous darkness. The ecological significance of thermoperiodic induction of diapause in this species is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Root fatty acid composition, photosynthesis, leaf water potentials, stomatal resistances, leaf specific weights, and root: shoot ratios of soybean were measured in two temperature regimes. Groups of soybean plants were grown in controlled chambers of the Duke University Phytotron under two thermoperiods. One group of the plants was grown from seed for 3 weeks in either 29/23°C or 17/11°C thermoperiods, and another group was grown for 2 weeks in 29/23°C and then transferred to the 17/11°C thermoperiod where it remained for 8 days. Broccoli was also grown in either 29/23°C or 17/11°C thermoperiods. Soybean roots contained more unsaturated fatty acids than broccoli roots, although broccoli roots showed a larger increase in unsaturation than soybean roots with decreased temperature. The fatty acid unsaturation in the roots of soybean began to increase rapidly after the temperature regime was changed. The increase was in the new roots produced in the cold regime rather than in the pre-existing roots. The soybean leaf water and osmotic potentials decreased about 0.4 MPa, beginning one day after the transfer from 29/23°C to 17/11°C, but recovered significantly after 8 d. Plants grown at 17/11 °C had lower rates of photosynthesis and adaxial stomatal resistances, but higher root: shoot ratios and specific leaf weights compared to plants grown at 29/23°C. Plants grown and maintained at 29/23°C showed a steady increase in photosynthetic rates over the 8-d experimental period, whether rates were measured in 1 mol m?3 or 9 mol m?3 oxygen. Plants transferred to 17/11°C however maintained constant rates of photosynthesis at 1 mol m?3 O2, whereas at 9 mol m?3 rates declined for 2 d then were constant for the remaining 6 d of the experimental period. These results suggest that changes in membrane fatty acid unsaturation is an important aspect of plant acclimation to chilling temperatures in terms of maintaining root permeability and water uptake. However, the degree of unsaturation is not a good indicator of differences in chilling tolerance among species. The apparent acclimation of photorespiration to a constant percentage of photosynthesis suggests a role of photorespiration in the plant.  相似文献

Cold hardiness and biochemical changes were investigated in winter and summer pupae of the cabbage armyworm Mamestra brassicae at the diapause and post-diapause stages under temperature acclimation. Diapause pupae were successively acclimated to 25, 20 and then 10 degrees C (warm-acclimated group). Pupae at the diapause and post-diapause stages were successively acclimated to 5, 0, -5 and then -10 degrees C (cold-acclimated groups). Supercooling point values in winter and summer pupae remained constant regardless of the diapause stages and acclimated temperatures. Warm-acclimated pupae at the diapause stage did not survive the subzero temperature exposure, whereas, cold-acclimated pupae achieved cold hardiness to various degrees. Winter pupae were more cold hardy than summer pupae, and pupae at the post-diapause stage were more cold hardy than those at the diapause stage. Trehalose contents in winter pupae rose under cold acclimation. Summer pupae accumulated far lower trehalose contents than winter pupae, with the maximal level occurring in winter pupae at the post-diapause stage. Glycogen content remained at a high level in diapause pupae after warm acclimation, whereas it decreased after cold acclimation. Alanine, the main free amino acid in haemolymph after cold acclimation, increased at lower temperatures in both diapause and post-diapause pupae, but the increase was greater in the diapause pupae. These results suggest that cold hardiness is more fully developed in winter pupae than in summer pupae, and cold acclimation provides higher cold hardiness in winter pupae at the post-diapause stage than at the diapause stage.  相似文献

We investigated the daily rhythm of the response to noradrenaline injections in Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus sungorus) at neutral ambient temperature, under long photoperiod (L:D 12:12) and after four weeks of acclimation to cold (10ºC) and short photoperiod (L:D 8:16). Animals were injected with noradrenaline (0.6 mg/kg) every four hours. Body temperature and gross motor activity were measured with MiniMitter transmitters implanted into abdominal cavity. Additionally, we measured body weight and food intake prior to, and after acclimation. After four weeks of acclimation, the experiment was performed under LD cycle and then repeated during one-day of constant light (LL) and constant darkness (DD). In animals acclimated to L:D 12:12 and ambient temperature of 25ºC, noradrenaline injections caused short-lasting increase in body temperature followed by marked decrease. There was no significant difference in the magnitude of the reaction between light and dark phase of the day. After acclimation to cold and L:D 8:16, under LD conditions, we recorded significant differences between the responses to the noradrenaline injections during light and dark phase of the day. Post-injection increase was higher during the day than during the night while following noradrenaline-induced hypothermia was much more pronounced in darkness. In experiments performed after acclimation to cold and short photoperiod but during one day of LL and DD regimes, these differences were attenuated. Data presented here indicate that in cold acclimated hamsters, the response to exogenous noradrenaline depends on the time of injection and it exhibits clear daily rhythm. The rhythmicity is altered under LL and DD regimes. It seems that post-injection increase in body temperature elicits following hypothermia. This hypothermia might be of a great ecological importance. Reasonable lowering of body temperature would be a protective mechanism, allowing for energy charge restoration.  相似文献
