Question: While it is well known that species richness depends on plot size, it is not generally recognised that the same must be true for constancy. Accordingly, many authors use varying plot sizes when classifying vegetation based on the comparison of constancies between groups of plots. We ask whether the constancy‐area relationship follows a general rule, how strong the effect of plot sizes is on constancies, and if it is possible to correct constancies for area. Location: For empirical evaluation, we use data from plant communities in the Czech Republic, Sweden and Russia. Methods: To assess the potential influence of differences in plot size on constancies, we develop a mathematical model. Then, we use series of nested plot species richness data from a wide range of community types (herbaceous and forest) to determine the parameters of the derived function and to test how much the shape of the constancy‐area relationship depends on taxa or vegetation types. Results: Generally, the constancy‐area relationship can be described by C (A)=1?(1?C0)(A/A0)^d, with C being constancy, A area, C0 known constancy on a specific area A0, and d a damping parameter accounting for spatial autocorrelation. As predicted by this function, constancies in plant communities always varied from values near 0% to near 100% if plot sizes were changed sufficiently. For the studied vegetation types, a two‐ to fourfold increase in plot size resulted in a change of conventional constancy classes, i.e. an increase of constancy by 20% or more. Conclusions: Vegetation classification, which largely relies on constancy values, irrespective of whether traditional or modern fidelity definitions are used, is strongly prone to distorting scale effects when relevés of different plot sizes are combined in studies. The constancy‐area functions presented allow an approximate transformation of constancies to other plot sizes but are flawed by idiosyncrasies in taxa and vegetation types. Thus, we conclude that the best solution for future surveys is to apply uniform plot sizes within a few a priori delimited formations and to determine diagnostic species only within these formations. Finally, we suggest that more detailed analyses of constancy‐area relationships can contribute to a better understanding of species‐area relationships because the latter are the summation of the first for all species. 相似文献

A program package is described in which vegetation data can be objectively classified and analysed. Classification is based on minimum entropy. Results show that in a comparison with TWINSPAN, improvements to the relevé sequence, in terms of community variation, can be obtained. Furthermore, TWINSPAN classifications are shown to be dependent on a particular relevé input sequence. 相似文献

Abstract. The vegetation class is generally accepted as the highest category in vegetation taxonomy. Vegetation classes, following the tradition, are defined mainly on the basis of character species. However, these are sometimes relatively rare and not always really representative of the ecological conditions of plant communities included in the class. In the present study the possibilities are discussed for a more comprehensive definition of the class, including spatial structure and environmental characteristics of the vegetation and the geographical distribution of character species. These include criteria with practical value, in particular for the understanding of vegetation in tropical areas. Some cases of well-known vegetation classes are discussed; in most of them the ranges of single character species and the range of the class as a whole largely coincide. 相似文献

Abstract. Sand dune vegetation along the coast of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Campeche was sampled by means of 1501 releves and the data were analyzed with classification and ordination programs. 36 community types were distinguished, which were grouped into 10 higher-order groups. The communities are described in a sequence reflecting the main vegetation zonation. Beach, embryo dune and foredune community groups include 12 community types, the sheltered zone includes 16 types and the fixed dunes 8 types. The ordination results reveal one main vegetation gradient corresponding to the increase in mean distance from the shoreline and elevation, and being covariant with species richness, mean vegetation cover and mean vegetation height. Additional differences are related to the geographical transition between the Gulf and Caribbean coastal vegetation and environmental conditions, mainly type of sand, occurring in the study area. Siliceous sand and a Gulf climate are characteristic for most of Tabasco, and calcareous sand and a Caribbean-type climate are characteristic for Campeche. Disturbance caused by coconut plantations, cattle grazing and tourism favours the invasion of ruderal species from waste places behind the dunes, which attain local dominance in the dunes described here. Consequently some separate community types had to be distinguished. The distribution of community types is analyzed in the context of the transitions between calcareous and siliceous substrates in the study area. 相似文献

Synopsis To better understand patterns of fish assemblage composition in Wisconsin streams in relation to major environmental gradients, I carried out multivariate direct gradient analysis (canonical correspondence analysis) of two large independent datasets on fish species abundance in Wisconsin streams. Analysis of the two datasets yielded similar results, suggesting that observed patterns and relationships were real. Stream sites were distributed along fish species-environment gradients, but segregation into distinct stream temperature and geographic groups was also evident. The strongest gradient in both datasets was related to summer water temperature patterns, and encompassed a transition from small, coldwater streams dominated by salmonids, cottids, certain cyprinids, and few other species, to both small and large, warmwater streams dominated by a high diversity of different cyprinids, catostomids, ictalurids, centrarchids, and percids. A second gradient in both datasets was complex but largely geographic. Within it, sites from each of the four ecoregions that occupy Wisconsin formed fairly discrete groups. The strongest differences were between sites in the two southern Wisconsin ecoregions, the Driftless Area and the Southeastern Wisconsin Till Plains, that were dominated by certain cyprinids, ictalurids, and centrarchids, and sites in the two northern Wisconsin ecoregions, the North Central Hardwood Forests and the Northern Lakes and Forests, that were dominated by a different set of cyprinids and ictalurids, plus some petromyzontids, salmonids, catostomids, and percids. Sites from the Driftless Area that were mostly higher-gradient (steep stream slope) and had many riffle-dwelling species could also be distinguished from sites in the Southeastern Wisconsin Till Plains that were mostly lower-gradient and had many pool-dwelling species. The patterns of fish assemblage composition among sites and the associated fish species-environment relationships that were revealed by the analyses provided a framework for developing an ecologically meaningful hierarchical classification of Wisconsin stream sites based on stream thermal regime, ecoregion, stream size, and stream gradient. 相似文献

The exotic annual forb Cotula coronopifolia has locally invaded salt marsh communities naturally dominated by Spergularia marina along large parts of the Iberian coastline. While the floristic composition of C. coronopifolia dominated communities on the Atlantic coast of northern Portugal has already been described, this information was missing
for the southern part of the country. We carried out a phytosociological study at 21 sites along the south-western and southern
coast of mainland Portugal to determine the ecology and syntaxonomical status of these communities, and to compare them to
the Atlantic ones. Plant communities co-dominated by C. coronopifolia and S. marina were generally found in the sub-halophilous inner part of salt marshes. They occupied gaps within taller perennial vegetation
(Juncus maritimus formations), such as small pools temporarily inundated with brackish waters. Southern communities differed from the northern
ones by the high abundance of Triglochin barrelieri and the absence of salt-intolerant species that are present in the Atlantic communities. This difference may result from
the drier summer climate in southern regions, leading to intense water evaporation and thus, more saline conditions. We propose
to classify the Mediterranean communities in a new association, the Cotulo coronopifoliae–Triglochinetum barrelieri. High abundance of Limonium diffusum further allowed the distinction of a new subassociation limonietosum diffusi for the southernmost part of Portugal. Results show that invasive exotic plants can form new phytosociological associations
with a characteristic species composition, but that these community types, despite being dominated by the same invader, still

Abstract: The progress in the floristic study of the circumpolar Arctic since the 1940s is summarized and a new floristic division of this region is presented. The treeless areas of the North Atlantic and North Pacific with an oceanic climate, absence of permafrost and a very high proportion of boreal taxa are excluded from the Arctic proper. It is argued that the Arctic deserves the status of a floristic region. The tundra zone and some oceanic areas are divided into subzones according to their flora and vegetation. Two groups of subzones are recognized: the Arctic group (including the Arctic tundras proper and the High Arctic) and the Hypoarctic group. The Arctic phytochorion is floristically divided into sectors: 6 provinces and 20 subprovinces reflecting the regional features of each sector in connection with flora history, physiography and continentality-oceanity of the climate. Each sector is described and differentiated by a set of differential and co-differential species. The peculiarities of the Arctic flora are manifest in different ways in the various sectors, and endemism is not the universal criterion for subdivision. 相似文献

Abstract. Within the framework of the Dutch ‘Network Ecological Monitoring’, a large set of new permanent plots has been established to monitor selected plant communities throughout The Netherlands for studying the effects of environmental changes on species composition of semi‐natural communities. This national programme will also make use of pre‐existing permanent plots. These plots reflect the long and comprehensive history of research using permanent plots in The Netherlands, where the first permanent plots were established in the early 1930s. To enhance the usefulness of preexisting permanent plots, a comprehensive permanent plot database was compiled. This database was derived from the Dutch National Vegetation Database, that was established for the recent vegetation classification of The Netherlands. This was supplemented with information from various organizations and a number of individual researchers. Currently, the permanent plot database contains ca. 6000 permanent plots. More than 2500 of these plots have been sampled at least 5, and ca. 1500 plots at least 10. Most of the plots are from grasslands, followed by forests and dune systems. This database not only provides insight into vegetation succession, fluctuations within plant communities over time, and the effects of changes of the environment on the vegetation but, indirectly, italso offers the possibility of studying the long‐term behaviour of individual plant species (e.g. establishment, competition, longevity). For the Network Ecological Monitoring a selection of these (historical) plots will be added to the new network of permanent plots in The Netherlands, thus supplying information of past vegetation conditions. 相似文献

Mediterranean hay meadow communities: diversity and dynamics in mountain areas throughout the Iberian Central Range (Spain) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper reports a phytosociological study on managed hay meadow communities in the main mountains of the Spanish Central Range. Multivariate techniques (Cluster analysis and CA-ordination) were applied in the classification of the relevés and ordination of vegetation units and species. Clusters were related to the following associations: Agrostio castellanae–Arrhenatheretum bulbosi, Festuco amplae–Cynosuretum cristati, and F. amplae–Agrostietum castellanae. The scattergram suggested that the dynamic patterns between communities are associated with soil nutrient content and moisture. We propose a new subassociation: F. amplae–A. castellanae gaudinietosum fragilis that includes Salmantincensean Agrostis castellana communities growing in regions with lower supramediterranean thermotype. 相似文献

Abstract. A syntaxonomic study of the major plant communities in neotropical North American deserts (Sonoran, Mojave and Baja California Deserts) is presented. The field method of the Braun-Blanquet approach was combined with a numerical syntaxonomical analysis (cluster analysis and principal coordinate ordination). 21 associations are described for the first time: Ambrosio chenopodifoliae-Larreetum tridentatae, Acamptopappo sphaerocephali-Larreetum tridentatae, Hymenocleo monogyrae-Baccharidetum glutinosae, Bergerocacto emoryi-Agavetum shawii, Burseretum hindsianomicrophyllae, Cercidio microphylli-Carnegieetum giganteae, Bursero microphyllae-Cyrtocarpetum edulis, Hymenocleo salsolae-Daleetum spinosae, Echinocereo engelmannii-Agavetum deserti, Euphorbio californicae-Fouquierietum diguetii, Fouquierio splendentis-Larreetum tridentatae, Agavo cerulatae-Idrietum columnaris, Mascagnio macropterae-Lysilometum candidae, Maytenetum phyllanthoidis, Opuntio basilaris-Larreetum tridentatae, Prosopidetum torreyanae, Roso minutifoliae-Aesculetum parryi, Opuntio taponae-Agavetum subcerulatae, Tidestromio oblongifoliae-Atriplicetum hymenelytrae, Eurotio lanatae-Larreetum tridentatae and Yucco validae-Fouquierietum diguetii. As vegetation science develops its formalized methodology increased in importance. At the beginning of the century traditional European schools of phytosociology applied an intuitive classification and ordering scheme to establish vegetation units. The introduction of computer-supported data analysis into vegetation science accelerated the formalization. The present paper presents a formal outline for phytosociology and community analysis. In this scheme we distinguish different data states which are connected by active data handling. Data sampling and subsequent analysis can be understood as filtering processes, making theoretical assumptions in vegetation science very important. Abstract. The vegetation of anthropogenically disturbed sites on the Chukotka Peninsula was investigated in 1986 and 1990. 102 sites had been bulldozed free of vegetation and soil between 2 and 20 yr ago and revegetated. Anthropogenic vegetation differs considerably from natural tundra. The total plant cover decreases, lichens are absent, moss composition changes, and graminoids predominate. A floristic classification was developed in order to describe the diversity of anthropogenic communities formed on these sites. Four associations were distinguished, all belonging to the alliance Poion glaucomalacanthae. An additional alliance characterized by Alopecurus alpinus is suggested for colder sites, but it has not yet been described. There is a correspondence of associations to substrate types. The association Phippsietum algidae was found only on loam substrate. The Artemisietum glomeratae and Saxifragetum punctatae are connected with rubble or gravel. The graminoid association Arctagrostietum arundinaceae is generally widespread in disturbed habitats and occurs on a variety of substrate types. 相似文献

A survey of syntaxa of vegetation of North American boreal forests (class Vaccinio-Piceetea) is presented. This phytosociological survey, carried out combining the Braun-Blanquet method with numerical syntaxonomical analyses (cluster and correspondence analysis), describes the associations of the North American boreal forests, which have several species, varieties or vicariant species in common with their Eurasian counterparts, and can be placed in the class Vaccinio-Piceetea. By means of tabular and multivariate analyses, 2084 North American relevés were compared with 3273 relevés from European, Japanese and Korean boreal forest, to describe and typify 4 orders, 10 alliances and 37 associations. Diagnostic tables, ordination, clustering, and climatic, edaphic and biogeographical data were used to show floristic affinities among these syntaxa and interpret their distribution areas. Syntaxa were briefly characterized by their floristic composition, physiognomy, succession, zonation, and biogeographical distribution. 相似文献
