The effect of rectification and non-normal accommodation on the two-factor theory of alternating current stimulation is studied. Rectification with normal accommodation increases the required amplitude of the current, especially for high frequencies. Rectification with non-normal accommodation introduces two upper limits, one for very low and one for very high frequencies.  相似文献

Near work is associated with increased activity in the neck and shoulder muscles, but the underlying mechanism is still unknown. This study was designed to determine whether a dynamic change in focus, alternating between a nearby and a more distant visual target, produces a direct parallel change in trapezius muscle activity. Fourteen healthy controls and 12 patients with a history of visual and neck/shoulder symptoms performed a Near-Far visual task under three different viewing conditions; one neutral condition with no trial lenses, one condition with negative trial lenses to create increased accommodation, and one condition with positive trial lenses to create decreased accommodation. Eye lens accommodation and trapezius muscle activity were continuously recorded. The trapezius muscle activity was significantly higher during Near than during Far focusing periods for both groups within the neutral viewing condition, and there was a significant co-variation in time between accommodation and trapezius muscle activity within the neutral and positive viewing conditions for the control group. In conclusion, these results reveal a connection between Near focusing and increased muscle activity during dynamic changes in focus between a nearby and a far target. A direct link, from the accommodation/vergence system to the trapezius muscles cannot be ruled out, but the connection may also be explained by an increased need for eye-neck (head) stabilization when focusing on a nearby target as compared to a more distant target.  相似文献

Poor visual ergonomics is associated with visual and neck/shoulder discomfort, but the relation between visual demands and neck/shoulder muscle activity is unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate whether trapezius muscle activity was affected by: (i) eye-lens accommodation; (ii) incongruence between accommodation and convergence; and (iii) presence of neck/shoulder discomfort. Sixty-six participants (33 controls and 33 with neck pain) performed visually demanding near work under four different trial-lens conditions. Results showed that eye-lens accommodation per se did not affect trapezius muscle activity significantly. However, when incongruence between accommodation and convergence was present, a significant positive relationship between eye-lens accommodation and trapezius muscle activity was found. There were no significant group-differences. It was concluded that incongruence between accommodation and convergence is an important factor in the relation between visually demanding near work and trapezius muscle activity. The relatively low demands on accommodation and convergence in the present study imply that visually demanding near work may contribute to increased muscle activity, and over time to the development of near work related neck/shoulder discomfort.  相似文献

Vietnamese leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) were tested for their ability to focus on prey objects at various distances. Accommodation was continuously measured by infrared photoretinoscopy. All animals investigated during this study showed a surprisingly high precision of accommodation over a range of over 30 D. Measured accommodation matched the target distance accurately for distances between 3 and 17 cm. The turtles switched between independent and coupled accommodation in the two eyes. Independent accommodation was observed when the turtles inspected their environment visually without a defined object of interest. Coupled accommodation was only observed during binocular prey fixation. When a turtle aimed at a target, the symmetrical focus of both eyes persisted even if vision was totally blocked in one eye or altered by ophthalmic lenses. This suggests that the eyes were linked by internal neuronal mechanisms. The pupil of the eye responded clearly to changes in ambient light intensity. A strong decrease in pupil size was also observed when the eye was focused on a close target. In this case, the constriction of the pupil probably aids in the deformation of the eye lens during near-accommodation.  相似文献

Chameleons have a number of unusual, highly specialised visual features, including telescopic visual optics with a reduced lens power, wide separation of the eye's nodal point from the axis of rotation, a deep-pit fovea, rapid pre-calculated strikes for prey based on monocular depth judgements (including focus), and a complex pattern of partially independent alternating eye movements. The same set of features has been acquired independently by a teleost, the sandlance Limnichthyes fasciatus. Despite its underwater lifestyle, this fish displays visual behaviour and rapid strikes for prey that are remarkably similar to those of the chameleon [1]. In a direct comparison of the two species, we have revealed other, previously unsuspected, similarities, such as corneal accommodation, which was unknown in teleosts, as well as bringing together, for the first time, data collected from both species. The sandlance is the only teleost, among thousands studied, that has corneal refraction, corneal accommodation and reduced lens power, as well as sharing the other specialised optical features seen in chameleons. The independent eye movement pattern in the sandlance is also unusual and similar to that of the chameleon. The selection pressures that have produced this remarkable example of convergence may relate to common visual constraints in the life styles of these two phylogenetically disparate species.  相似文献

Classical theories suggest that the surface area of the crystalline lens changes during accommodation while the lens volume remains constant. Our recent work challenged this view by showing that the lens volume decreases as the lens flattens during unaccommodation. In this paper we investigate 1) the magnitude of changes in the surface of the in vitro isolated cow lens during simulated accommodation, as well as that of human lens models, determined from lateral photographs and the application of the first theorem of Pappus; and 2) the velocity of the equatorial diameter recovery of prestretched cow and rabbit lenses by using a custom-built software-controlled stretching apparatus synchronized to a digital camera. Our results showed that the in vitro cow lens surface changed in an unexpected manner during accommodation depending on how much tension was applied to flatten the lens. In this case, the anterior surface initially collapsed with a reduction in surface followed by an increase in surface, when the stretching was applied. In the human lens model, the surface increased when the lens unaccommodated. The lens volume always decreases as the lens flattens. An explanation for the unexpected surface change is presented and discussed. Furthermore, we determined that the changes in lens volume, as reflected by the speed of the equatorial diameter recovery in in vitro cow and rabbit lenses during simulated accommodation, occurred within a physiologically relevant time frame (200 ms), implying a rapid movement of fluid to and from the lens during accommodation.  相似文献

The barostat is considered the gold standard for evaluation of proximal gastric motility especially for the accommodation response to a meal. The procedure is invasive because it involves the introduction of an intragastric catheter and bag and is not always well tolerated. Moreover, the barostat bag itself may influence motility. Nowadays magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is able to measure several aspects of gastric motility noninvasively. To evaluate whether the accommodation response of the stomach, observed with the barostat, is present during MRI and whether the barostat interferes with gastric physiology, gastric accommodation, motility, and emptying were studied twice in 14 healthy subjects with MRI using three-dimensional volume scans and two-dimensional dynamic scans once in the presence of a barostat bag and once when the barostat bag was not present. Fasting and postprandial intragastric volumes were significantly higher in the experiment with barostat vs. without barostat (fasting: 350 +/- 132 ml vs. 37 +/- 21 ml, P < 0.0001; postprandial: 852 +/- 126 ml vs. 361 +/- 62 ml, P < 0.0001). No significant differences were found in gastric emptying (88 +/- 41 vs. 97 +/- 40 ml/h, not significant) and contraction frequency between both experiments. The accommodation response observed in the presence of the barostat bag was not observed in the absence of the barostat bag. In conclusion, the presence of an intragastric barostat bag does not interfere with gastric emptying or motility, but the accommodation response measured with the barostat in situ is not observed without the barostat bag in situ. Gastric accommodation is a nonphysiological barostat-induced phenomenon.  相似文献

This paper considers what concept of accommodation is necessary to identify and address discrimination, disadvantages and disparities in such a way that the plurality of religious people with their beliefs, values and practices may be justly accommodated in healthcare. It evaluates threats to the possibility of such accommodation pertaining by considering what beliefs and practices might increase the risk of unjust discrimination against and disadvantage for religious people, whether as individuals or as groups; and the risk of disparities between the care provided to religious people. The claim is that there is an important cluster of risks that are political in kind and emergent within philosophical bioethics. While not amounting (yet) to a trend, they are sufficiently threatening to a just civic life for patients and healthcare staff as to warrant scrutiny. After an Introductory Section 1, Section 2 evaluates a criticism of ‘accommodation’ and the apparently additional health-related requirements that those of religious faith demand, when compared with other people. It does so by comparing Lori Beaman's idea of agonism with that of a distinct and somewhat complementary approach in Jonathan Chaplin's political philosophy, before examining the role of established religion in setting the conditions for the accommodation of religion and belief in healthcare. Section 3 examines risks to such accommodation by engaging critically with three health-related instantiations of political philosophy that differ radically from both Beaman and Chaplin. A concluding Section 4 focusses on appropriate modes of communicating about religious and other beliefs in healthcare.  相似文献

The accommodation of Muslim religious practices is an increasingly salient political issue across Western Europe. Hitherto, most research has focused on how states accommodate Muslim religious practices, and sociological scholarship on workplace accommodation is still extremely scarce. This article fills the gap in the extant literature by presenting a qualitative analysis of over 300 requests for religious accommodation in the workplace in Belgium. The authors contend that turning the spotlight from state to workplace accommodation of Muslim religious practices allows the discovery of different answers to the “hows” and the “whys” of minority religious accommodation. Different than state accommodation, workplace accommodation is characterized by three “i”s: it is granted or refused on the basis of instrumental argumentations; it is regulated informally and resolved internally. This article proposes an institutionalist framework adapted to the world of work to explain the specific features of workplace religious accommodation of Muslim religious practices.  相似文献

The effect of ethylene on petiole growth of the Fringed Waterlily (Nymphoides peltata (S.G. Gmelin) O. Kuntze) changes during leaf ontogeny. During early development (before expansion of laminae), ethylene causes an increase in both cell number and cell size; later in development, promotion of rapid cell expansion is the dominant effect. The early effects may contribute to the accommodation of new leaves to water columns of different depth. The later effects on cell expansion only are shown to contribute to the rapid accommodation of floating leaves when changes in water level submerge the laminae. This kind of accommodation results from an interaction between accumulated ethylene, which increases wall extensibility, and the tension in petioles due to natural buoyancy which, it is suggested, supplements the driving force for cell expansion. Cell age (position) within a petiole and age of the whole petiole influence the growth response to ethylene alone and the amount of extra growth produced by applying tension when ethylene is present. In young petioles, apical cells are highly sensitive to ethylene and tension causes little further growth; older cells in both immature and mature petioles show little response to ethylene unless the petiole is under tension. Young (but not mature) petioles respond slowly to applied tension even in the absence of ethylene. It is concluded that as cells age the driving force for expansion limits increasingly their capacity to respond to the wall-loosening effects of ethylene. Dual sensitivity to ethylene and buoyant tension facilitates rapid accommodation responses but sensitivity of young petioles to tension alone may exclude Nymphoides from habitats where current velocity is appreciable.  相似文献

During accommodation, mammalian lenses change shape from a rounder configuration (near focusing) to a flatter one (distance focusing). Thus the lens must have the capacity to change its volume, capsular surface area, or both. Because lens topology is similar to a torus, we developed an approach that allows volume determination from the lens cross-sectional area (CSA). The CSA was obtained from photographs taken perpendicularly to the lenticular anterior-posterior (A-P) axis and computed with software. We calculated the volume of isolated bovine lenses in conditions simulating accommodation by forcing shape changes with a custom-built stretching device in which the ciliary body-zonulae-lens complex (CB-Z-L) was placed. Two measurements were taken (CSA and center of mass) to calculate volume. Mechanically stretching the CB-Z-L increased the equatorial length and decreased the A-P length, CSA, and lens volume. The control parameters were restored when the lenses were stretched and relaxed in an aqueous physiological solution, but not when submerged in oil, a condition with which fluid leaves the lens and does not reenter. This suggests that changes in lens CSA previously observed in humans could have resulted from fluid movement out of the lens. Thus accommodation may involve changes not only in capsular surface but also in volume. Furthermore, we calculated theoretical volume changes during accommodation in models of human lenses using published structural parameters. In conclusion, we suggest that impediments to fluid flow between the aquaporin-rich lens fibers and the lens surface could contribute to the aging-related loss of accommodative power. lens volume calculation; intralenticular fluid movement; presbyopia; mammalian lens  相似文献

Organisms exposed to a combination of weak, parallel static and alternating magnetic fields show a distinct response when the frequency of the alternating component is formally equal to the cyclotron frequencies for Ca2+ or other biologically important ions. It is impossible to explain the observable phenomenon through a magnetoinduced drift of the ions, as the Lorentz force is too small to change ionic movements. In similar conditions, a resonance-like response arises when the alternating field is tuned to the Larmor frequency for nuclear-spin magnetic moments. The mechanism of these phenomena is also still unclear. In this communication, arguments are presented whereby both types of effect can be treated in a unified context, for which the existence of ion-specific magnetic dipoles must be postulated.  相似文献

Combined parallel static and alternating magnetic fields cause a rapid change in the ionic current flowing through an aqueous glutamic acid solution when the alternating field frequency is equal to the cyclotron frequency. The current peak is 20-30% of the background direct current. The peak is observed with slow sweep in the alternating magnetic field frequency from 1 Hz-10 Hz. Only one resonance peak in the current is observed in this frequency range. The frequency corresponding to the peak is directly proportional to the static magnetic field. Varying ionic composition of outher medium and applying specific agents the role of fast and slow systems of entering currents in the accommodation of cats ventricular fibres has been studied. In potential region close to the level of resting potential (membrane depolarization no larger than 20-30mv), accomodation mainly depends on fast sodium currents. It is inhibited with a rise of this current (akonitin 0.1--1 mg) and, on the contrary, it increases when it gets weaker (novacain 2--5 mM). In the region of more positive potentials (membrane depolarization more than by 30 mv) the accommodation is mainly determined by the slow NA--Ca-systems of channels. The agents which strengthen NA--Ca--current (Si2+--5mM, Ca2+--10mM, Ba2+--0.1 mM) reduce the accommodation in the activation region of the Na--Ca--system. The agents which weaken the slow current (Mn2+--3 mM, isoptin--2+5 mg/l, inderal--2 mg/l) produce an opposite effect.  相似文献

Conformational transitions of alternating copoly(l-leucyl-l-lysine) and copoly(l-leucyl-l-ornithine) in organic solvents and in alcohol-water mixtures were determined by c.d. measurements and the results compared with those from random copoly(Leu48.3, Lys51.7). As reported previously16,17, in salt-free water these alternating copolymers undergo a conformational transition from a disordered to β-structure when the pH is raised or when various salts are added, whereas random copolymers adopt an α-helix conformation under similar conditions. However, both alternating copolymers reveal a tendency to form α-helix in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and in alcohol-water mixtures at neutral pH, as does the random copolymer. The alcohol concentration at which the α-helix can be induced is dependent on the kind of alcohol, the α-helix promoting power follows the the series: 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol > isopropanol > ethanol > methanol. In addition, these alternating copolymers in methanol-water mixtures below 50% (by volume) methanol form the β-structure when the pH is raised. On the other hand, above 60% methanol the fraction of α-helix already formed at neutral pH is enhanced at higher pH-values.  相似文献

The above effect was studied in 65 subjects with normal vision (mean age 20 years) in investigations in which the following factors were successively changed: distance of optokinetic stimuli from the eyes; this distance and angular velocity of stimuli; distance and frequency of stimuli or finally distance and accommodation level. The angular velocity of the pursuit nystagmus phase was found to be by far the highest and simultaneously the closest to the angular velocity of optokinetic stimuli when the latter are 1.5m from the eyes. With shorter distances, the velocity of the pursuit movements lags steadily behind that of stimulus velocity. This change is conditioned by changes in OKN amplitude since its frequency as a whole does not change. Even though the accommodation level significantly affects the velocity of the pursuit nystagmus phase, the dependence on the distance of optokinetic stimuli from the eyes persists even after atropinization. The interpretation of these findings must take into account sepcifically the demands on accommodation, convergence, and on visual attention which are increased with shorter distances.  相似文献

Summary We have investigated the role of changes in corneal radius of curvature in effecting accommodation in the bird's eye. It was found that in natural accommodation (measured by IR photoretinoscopy) changes of corneal radius of curvature (measured by IR photokeratometry) play an important role in both the chick and the pigeon. In the adult pigeon the cornea is indeed responsible for the largest part of natural accommodation (up to approx. 9 D). In this animal the corneal diameter (as seen from the optical axis of the eye) decreases in accommodation which can be taken to explain the change of corneal radius of curvature. In the chicken, corneal accommodation is combined with other mechanisms (total accommodative range 15–17 D, corneal accommodation about 8 D). The chicken's cornea is aspherical within the pupil area leading to large measurement variation in photokeratometry if the Purkinje images are not symmetrical to the pupillary axis.Abbreviation IR infrared  相似文献

The behavior of the human crystalline lens during accommodation is analytically studied. The lens is modeled as a closed axisymmetrical membrane shell of varying thickness enclosing an incompressible liquid. To simulate zonular tension associated with lenticular accommodation, an axisymmetrical radial force or displacement is imposed around the shell equator. Two second-order, simultaneous, nonlinear governing differential equations are derived. Numerical results, obtained from the investigation of human lens profiles of three independently published MRI images and a drawing of a microphotograph, demonstrate that when zonular traction within the physiological force range of the ciliary muscle is exerted, both central lens thickness and central optical power increase. Qualitatively, these increases are independent of lens shape. However, the magnitude of these changes is dependent on the initial profile of the lens and is enhanced by the "natural" variation in capsular thickness. Only when a pulling force significantly exceeds the force capacity of the ciliary muscle does the lens flatten and its central thickness and optical power decrease.  相似文献

Reduced feed intake and hence lower growth rates commonly occur when the environment of the pig changes, e.g. at weaning and when pigs are moved from growing accommodation to finishing accommodation. It is hypothesised that if environmental factors, such as feeder type, remain the same in the weaning and finishing accommodation this ‘growth check’ may be reduced. A total of 640 pigs in 32 pens of 20 pigs per pen were used to investigate the effects of two feeder types and changing or not changing the feeder type at 10 weeks of age on growth performance and behaviour in the periods from 4 to 10, 10 to finish (22) and from 4 to finish (22) weeks of age, respectively. The two feeder types tested were a ‘wet and dry’ single-space (S) feeder and a ‘dry’ multi-space feeder (M).In the period 4–10 weeks of age feeder type had no significant effect on growth performance though pigs on the ‘dry’ multi-space feeder tended to exhibit significantly better feed efficiency from 4 to 7 weeks of age. In the first week after changing accommodation the growth rate of pigs on all treatments was depressed (compared to the last 3 weeks of the grower period) and was reduced a further 60 g/day when the feeder type was changed. However, the “feeder” effect was transitory and had no effect on overall finisher performance except for pigs changed from a ‘dry’ multi-space feeder to ‘wet and dry’ single-spaced feeder. These animals had significantly faster growth rate over the finisher phase (P<0.05, 886 g/day) and between 4 weeks of age and finish (P<0.05, 730 g/day) than pigs on all other treatments. Feeder treatment had no significant effect on feed intake or feed efficiency in the finisher period or overall from wean to finish. Similarly, the treatments had no effect on the variation in growth rate. Behavioural observations showed that the average number of pigs at the feeder during the finishing period was significantly higher when feed was offered from treatment M–S (1.19 (freq/30 s), P<0.001). In conclusion, the present results suggest that, a change in feeder type, from a ‘dry’ multi-space feeder in growing accommodation to a ‘wet and dry’ single-space feeder in finishing accommodation appears to stimulate improved growth performance in the early finishing period and overall from weaning to finish.  相似文献

The timing of songs during vocal interactions in male passerines is an important component in territorial signalling as it can reflect information on the singer's state or possibly its quality. Using interactive playback, I investigated effects of song alternation and song overlapping on the nocturnal singing behaviour of nightingales, Luscinia megarhynchos. Subjects timed their songs differently depending on whether the playback songs overlapped their songs or alternated with them. During overlapping treatments, subjects sang at higher rates and interrupted more songs than during alternating treatments. In addition, during alternating treatments subjects sang at higher rates when they had been exposed to the overlapping treatment than when the alternating treatment was the first treatment they had received. These latter responses indicate that timing of songs is not just an immediate effect such as to avoid signal masking but that prior experience with a rival influences the way an individual uses its song. The results thus suggest that not only song overlapping but also the timing of songs during alternating singing carries important information. Individual differences in response suggest further that state (e.g. arousal or motivation) or possibly quality of a territorial male is important for decisions on how it responds vocally.
