Synopsis Leptocephali were collected in June 1981 and July 1989 over the continental shelf and slope of the Florida west coast. Tarpon larvae ranged 5.5–24.4 mm standard length (SL) and were the second most abundant leptocephalus species. Sagittae examined with compound microscopes and scanning electron microscopy had increments that were presumed to be formed daily. Increment counts made using the two microscopic techniques were not significantly different. Estimated ages ranged 2–25 days with a growth rate (± standard error) of 0.92 ± 0.04 mm d–1 The least squares linear regression equation SL = 2.78 + 0.92 (age in days) best described the relationship between estimated age and length. Adult tarpon appear to undergo a substantial spawning migration from inshore areas frequented during spring and summer to offshore spawning grounds. Spawning occurs during May, June, and July, although the spawning season may be of greater duration.  相似文献

Synopsis Sagittal otoliths from 50 king mackerel 2.9–13.0 mm SL and 72 Spanish mackerel 2.8–22.0 mm SL collected off the southeast U.S. were examined whole at 400 × using a compound microscope-video system. Otoliths of both species had visible, presumably daily, growth increments as well as finer subdaily increments. Otolith growth was directly proportional to growth in standard length for king (r2 = 0.91) and Spanish mackerel (r2 = 0.86). Spanish mackerel were estimated to be 3–15 d old with a mean absolute growth rate (SL/number of growth increments) and 95% confidence interval of 1.15 ± 0.07 mm · d–1. The least squares linear equation: SL = –1.30 + 1.31 (age in days), with r2 = 0.67 and p < 0.001, described the relationship between length and age. There was a significant positive relationship between absolute growth rate and fish length. King mackerel were estimated to be 3–15 d old with a mean absolute growth rate of 0.89 ± 0.06 mm d–1. The least squares linear equation: SL = 0.37 + 0.82 (age in days), with r2 = 0.77 and p < 0.001, best described the relationship between length and age. The relationship between growth rate and fish length was not significant. The growth rate of king mackerel was slightly higher for fish from the Mississippi River plume than from all other locations combined, while Spanish mackerel growth rates were not significantly different.  相似文献

Synopsis A total of 4181 stomachs of yellowfin tuna,Thunnus albacares (22–164 cm FL), mainly caught by gillnets in the period from July 1984 to June 1986 were analyzed. Food consumption of yellowfin tuna in nature was determined using the values of the average stomach content, incorporating laboratory measurements of gastric evacuation rates in a feeding model. The diet of yellowfin tuna around Sri Lanka comprised a variety of macro zooplanktonic and nektonic organisms. Juveniles < 39 cm FL, are planktivores. Tuna > 40 cm FL gradually increase their consumption of fishes with increasing size. Among fish speciesAuxis sp. are the most important. The daily food consumption of juvenile yellowfin tuna (22–59 cm FL) range from 1.8 g to 136.2 g, increasing to about 284.7 g to 551.9 g for the medium size tuna (60–99 cm FL). The adult tuna (100–>130 em FL) consume around 513 g to 538.8 g of prey per day. Daily ration estimates increase from 2.1% to 5.5% of body weight with increasing size up to 70 cm FL, beyond which it decreases. The predatory pressure of yellowfin tuna on commercially important fishes and other species is discussed.  相似文献

A large population of a previously unreported jellyfish occurred across the northern Gulf of Mexico (USA) from May through September of 2000. The jellyfish, identified as Phyllorhiza punctata by von Lendenfeld (1884), is not indigenous to the Gulf of Mexico or to the Atlantic Basin. Current theory states that this invasive species was introduced into the Atlantic from the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal about 45 years ago, and several confirmed reports indicated that a cryptic population may have existed in the northern Gulf since 1993. However, mesoscale hydrographic anomalies in spring 2000 may have directly transported the population from the Caribbean Sea where populations of P. punctata have been reported previously in Puerto Rico. We undertook a rapid-response sampling program from June through September to obtain ecological information regarding P. punctata in the highly productive northern Gulf waters. Jellyfish bell diameter increased by about 50% (from an average of 32 ± 12 to 45 ± 6 cm) as animals invaded nearshore waters during July. As the summer progressed, a net westerly distribution shift followed nearshore currents to an accumulation point near the mouth of Lake Borgne, Louisiana, in the far western Mississippi Sound. In the Lake Borgne aggregation, we estimated 5.37 × 106 medusae over an area of about 150 km2. All of the medusae appeared to lack the symbiotic algae that are present in all other described populations, and therefore must have depended solely on planktivory for their nutrition. Clearance rates estimated from ambient zooplankton, gut contents and published digestion times ranged from < 1 m3 d–1 for adult copepods to over 90 m3 d–1 for fish eggs. Based on these clearance rates, the central core of this aggregation (30 km2) was being turned over at least once per day with even higher turn-over in very concentrated `super-swarms'. Clogging of shrimp nets was the greatest economic impact, and perhaps contributed to millions of dollars in economic losses. The indirect effect of predation on eggs and larvae of commercially important finfish and shellfish remained intangible in the determination of economic effects. In 2001, P. punctata has recurred along southern Louisiana and has apparently spread into the coastal and lagoonal waters of the Florida east coast.  相似文献

The present study uses stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon (δ15Nandδ13C) as trophic indicators for Atlantic bluefin tuna larvae (BFT) (6–10 mm standard length) in the highly contrasting environmental conditions of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and the Balearic Sea (MED). These regions are differentiated by their temperature regime and relative productivity, with the GOM being significantly warmer and more productive. MED BFT larvae showed the highest δ15N signatures, implying an elevated trophic position above the underlying microzooplankton baseline. Ontogenetic dietary shifts were observed in the BFT larvae from the GOM and MED which indicates early life trophodynamics differences between these spawning habitats. Significant trophic differences between the GOM and MED larvae were observed in relation to δ15N signatures in favour of the MED larvae, which may have important implications in their growth during their early life stages. These low δ15N levels in the zooplankton from the GOM may be an indication of a shifting isotopic baseline in pelagic food webs due to diatrophic inputs by cyanobacteria. Lack of enrichment for δ15N in BFT larvae compared to zooplankton implies an alternative grazing pathway from the traditional food chain of phytoplankton—zooplankton—larval fish. Results provide insight for a comparative characterization of the trophic pathways variability of the two main spawning grounds for BFT larvae.  相似文献

A diversion of Mississippi River water into Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, USA by way of the Bonnet Carre Spillway has been proposed as a restoration technique to help offset regional wetland loss. An experimental diversion of Mississippi River water into Lake Pontchartrain was carried out in April 1994 to monitor the fate of nutrients and sediments in the spillway and Lake Pontchartrain. Approximately 6.4×108 m3 of Mississippi River water was diverted into Lake Pontchartrain over 42 days. As water passed through the Bonnet Carre Spillway, there were reductions in total suspended sediment concentrations of 82–83%, nitrite+nitrate (NOx) of 28–42%, in total nitrogen (TN) of 26–30%, and in total phosphorus (TP) of 50–59%. 3.9±1.1 cm of accretion was measured in the spillway. Nutrient concentrations at the freshwater plume edge in Lake Pontchartrain compared to the Mississippi River were lower for NOx (44–81%), TN (37–57%), and TP (40–70%), and generally higher for organic nitrogen (−7–57%). The Si:N ratio generally increased and the N:P ratio decreased from the river to the plume edge. Nutrient stoichiometric ratios indicate water at the plume edge was not silicate limited, suggesting conditions favoring diatomic phytoplankton.  相似文献

We examined the extent of movements of juvenile Florida pompano, Trachinotus carolinus, and gulf kingfish, Menticirrhus littoralis, along an open ocean beach. Fishes were collected by seine at three sites along Masonboro Island and Carolina Beach, NC between 7 June and 7 July 1995. All specimens 40 mm standard length (SL) were tagged with coded wire tags and released at the capture sites. Between 7 July and 9 August and on 15–16 September Masonboro Island and northern Carolina Beach were surveyed for tagged fish. A controlled tag mortality/retention study was conducted for both species. Overall, 1569 Florida pompano (40–135 mm SL) were tagged. Sixty-one (3.9%) of these were recaptured, and only eight moved away from the original tagging sites. The largest movements by two Florida pompano were 2.1 and 10.5 km. Many fish remained at their original tagging sites for 21–27 days. Of 488 gulf kingfish (36–158 mm SL) tagged, 16 (3.3%) were recaptured. Gulf kingfish also exhibited little movement away from tagging sites during the study, with individuals remaining at original tagging sites up to 21 days. Stock size estimates for Florida pompano ranged from 3354 to 4670 among the tagging sites, with densities ranging from 1.9 to 2.6 fish m–2. The remarkable site fidelity exhibited by these two species suggests that resources were not limiting or that predation pressure was not high enough to cause large scale movements during the study. This implies that local disturbances could impact behavior or survival of juvenile fishes in the surf zone.  相似文献

A population of the Hawaiian coral-reef goby, Asterropteryx semipunctata, was sampled over a 12-month period to determine basic demographics and reproductive parameters. The sexes did not differ in median length or weight, although the largest males were considerably longer and heavier than the largest females. Overall adult sex ratio was 1:1; monthly sex ratios did not differ from unity except in June, when there was a significant female bias. Minimum age at maturity (17.5–19mm SL) was estimated to be 4.5–5 months after hatching. Nearly all fish over 22mm SL were mature. Mature females were found in all months of the year, and females that showed evidence of recent or imminent spawning were collected in every month except December. Gonadal analyses indicated a peak in breeding during the summer (May–July) and minimal spawning during the winter (January–February). Between 20% and 30% of females showed evidence of having spawned within the 24-h period prior to collection; therefore, it was estimated that females spawned, on average, at least once every five days and perhaps as frequently as every three days. Mean batch fecundity was 708 eggs (± 418), and was not well predicted by standard length, body weight, or somatic condition. Relative batch fecundity (mean = 1.44 oocytes mg–1 somatic wet weight) varied seasonally, with higher values in spring and summer (April–July) than in fall and winter (September–January). Reproductive parameters are compared and contrasted with those of other gobiid fishes to elucidate general differences between temperate and tropical species.  相似文献

The rotifer Synchaeta pectinata dominated gut content of first feeding Mirogrex larvae (7 mm, 10 days age) and was a selected prey of neuston-caught larvae up to 15 mm TL. A negative L-value (linear index of selection) applied to predation on nauplii and copepodites by 7 and 8 mm larvae; nevertheless, caloric intake was dominated by copepods in 8–10 mm larvae. Neuston-caught larvae 13–20 mm TL fed selectively on Cladocera, especially Bosmina, and on the rotifer Asplanchna spp.Growth, estimated from otolith ring counts and from analysis of size distribution data, ranged from 3 to 7 mm mo–1, with higher rates for early spawned larvae. When consumption as estimated from gut content, was compared to amounts of food required for growth, it appeared that the smallest larvae were underfed, while 13–16 mm fish obtained rations close to sufficiency.Rotifer standing stock biomass in Lake Kinneret has decreased in recent years, especially in winter, the spawning period of Mirogrex. Postulated causes are predation by an increasingly large population of Mirogrex larvae, and decrease of external supply. Larval distribution appeared to be linked to S. pectinata abundance; highest densities of both organisms occurred in the area of inflow from the Jordan and Golan streams. Larval food enrichment of inflow water by fish pond drainage might have caused observed increases in Mirogrex stock size since 1960.  相似文献

The breeding cycle, recruitment, population dynamics, growth and production ofScrobicularia plana were studied at one station in the Bidasoa estuary (SE of the Biscay Bay, Spain) during a period of 3 or 4 years. To complete this study, the reproduction for a period of 1 year was analysed at two other sites of the estuary. At none of the stations important differences in spawning activity were observed between the different years. The animals reproduced for the first time when they reached the age of two years. The histological data and the recruitment analysis showed only one spawning period between June and mid-September, with a peak in July-August. This breeding pattern differs from those shown by other southern European populations. The recruitment of spat (0.25–0.50 mm) occurred from June–July to October–December in different years. The population showed different annual patterns of density and population structure, depending on recruitment success. Growth was most rapid in spring and summer. The bivalves reached a mean length of 21.8 mm at the age of approximately 16 months; in the following year they grew to 30 mm. The growth during the life span fitted the theoretical growth equation of Von Bertalanffy. Annual production was in the range of 59.0–83.4 g AFDW m–2 year–1. The P/B ratios of the population varied between 0.84 and 1.48 (1.06 ± 1.36; ¯x ± 95% C.I.).  相似文献

Diaphus theta is one of the most common myctophid fish species in the subarctic and transitional waters of the North Pacific. The growth of larval and juvenile D. theta was investigated using sagittal otolith increment analysis of specimens caught in transitional waters of the western North Pacific. Samples taken over a 24-h period demonstrated that otoliths exhibited daily growth cycles, allowing accurate determination of age. Calcification of the incremental zone of otoliths took place only at night, suggesting that the formation cycle of the increment of juvenile D. theta was different from that of shallow-water fishes and would be related to their diel vertical migration. The relationships between standard length (SL) and daily growth increment (D) were expressed as linear equations: SL = 2.65 + 0.141D (r 2 = 0.942) for larvae of 5.1–9.6 mm SL and SL = 3.54 + 0.129D (r 2 = 0.933) for juveniles of 13.7–27.6 mm SL. The growth rates were 0.14 mm d−1 in larvae and 0.13 mm d−1 in juveniles; this is slow compared with tropical or subtropical mycto-phid species, in which growth occurs at about twice these rates. The larval period, including the metamorphic stage, was long compared with species at lower latitudes and was estimated to be 71 days. The slow growth rate and long period of larval stage of D. theta would be the life history pattern of high-latitudinal species adapted to a low-temperature habitat. The food, feeding habits and growth of 0+ Alestes nurse (Rüppel) from the Blue Nile near Khartoum, was investigated. 0+ A. nurse were observed to change their food from phytoplankton and small zooplankton during their pre-metamorphosis stages, to larger zooplankton (Daphnia spp., Chydorus sp.) and insects (larvae, pupae and imagines) during their post-metamorphosis stage.Their growth in length and weight was characterized by two distinct stanzas; during the first stanza, the fish increased in total length at a rate of 0.196 mm mm–1 wk–1, and in wet weight at a rate of 0.430 g g–1 wk–1. These rates were reduced during the second stanza to 0.046 mm mm–1 and 0.080 g g–1 wk–1, respectively. The calculated value of the exponent b in their length-weight relationship suggested that their growth was allometric.  相似文献

Synopsis Plankton hauls captured 682 milkfish larvae (2.1–12.3 mm) in the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon and Coral Sea during 1979–1986. Larvae were present from November to March, and absent in April, July and October. We analyzed concentration, abundance and size-frequency data and concluded that spawning took place in the Coral Sea or at the outer edge of the continental shelf, apparently following an adult spawning migration of at least 50 km. Larvae then moved inshore to at least our most inshore routine sampling site near midshelf. Some larvae may have remained for a period in the lee of reefs along the shelf edge. Larvae apparently occupied the upper few metres of the water column, thereby becoming susceptible to shoreward movement in the wind-driven surface layer. Movement from spawning sites to midshelf probably required active maintenance of vertical position by larvae which enabled passive movement with favourable currents, and perhaps horizontal swimming. By the time larvae reach midshelf, continued inshore movement by horizontal swimming alone is possible.  相似文献

Synopsis Feeding and growth rates of 1–3 wk old herring larvae from four different stocks were compared in laboratory experiments (8°C). For most of the larval groups, feeding rate was saturated at nauplii (Acartia tonsa, nauplii stages 3–5) densities over 301–1 (5 g d.w. 1–1). Specific growth rate increased asymptotically with nauplii density, and reached about 6% d–1 at densities over 120 nauplii 1–1. The growth rates attained in the laboratory were similar to field measured growth rates of similarly aged herring larvae at comparable food densities. Since food particles were homogenously distributed in the laboratory tanks, patches of dense plankton concentrations are, thus, apparently not necessary for larval growth and survival in the sea. Growth efficiency differed between larval groups, with large sized larvae being the most efficient in transforming ingested matter into growth. The difference probably relates to different sizes rather than to the different geographical origins of the larvae.  相似文献

To ascertain the feeding habits of benthic juvenile yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus, the gut contents of 599 specimens (15–41 mm in standard length, SL), collected on a tidal mudflat in the Tama River estuary throughout the diel cycle, were examined. The major prey items changed from harpacticoid copepods to errant and sedentary polychaetes at ca. 20 mm SL. Prey width increased with fish size. Fish of 26–28 mm SL fed mainly from sunset to morning, with highest feeding intensity during twilight hours and/or high tide. Based on the gut evacuation rate estimated from a forced feeding experiment in the laboratory and data for the diel change of mean gut-content volume in the field, the daily ration of juvenile yellowfin goby (26–28 mm SL) was calculated to be 13.8 mm3 fish−1 day−1. This volume is approximately equivalent to 3.9 individuals of the errant polychaete Ceratonereis erythraeensis (9.7 mm in body length, BL) or 8.1 individuals of the sedentary polychaete Prionospio japonica (14.8 mm BL), both species occurring abundantly on the mudflat during the study.  相似文献

Larvae of the caddisTrichostegia minor (Curtis) were collected from four woodland pools in The Netherlands, three of which are temporary, from August 1986 till June 1987. Eggs and larvae of this species proved to be very well adapted to drought, freezing, strongly fluctuating pH and alkalinity levels and prolonged oxygen deficit. The life cycle ofT.minor in a small woodland marsh overgrown byCalla palustris took one year. Adult flight period started at the end of May. Oviposition took place independent of water. Hatching of the eggs started in September and was probably induced by immersion. During the larval stage from September until May, 5 instars could be distinguished by the size of the head capsule. Growth of instars I, II and III during autumn was moderate. Most larvae overwintered as instar III or IV. Possibly there was a larval diapause during winter. In spring rapid growth to instar V took place prior to pupation. Growth rate, expressed as the increase of mean individual dry weight was highest from March to April (2.05±0.75% DW.m–2.d–1). In extremely shallow water growth in spring was initially more rapid compared to growth in deeper water. During winter the growth rate decreased to 0.038±0.071% DW.m–2.d–1. Net annual production based on the changes of momentary biomass was 183.2±31.7 mg DW.m–2.y–1 or 177.2±31.3 mg AFDW.m–2.y–1. Production loss during the winter season was 75.1±10.8 mg DW.m–2.y–1 or 72.3±10.6 mg AFDW.m–2.y–1.  相似文献

Synopsis Age and growth in length and dry weight of cohorts of wild Pacific herring larvae, Clupea harengus pallasi, were measured using successive modes in the length-frequencies of the catches and the number of rings in the otoliths. Average linear rates of growth in length ranged from 0.36–0.41 mm d–1, and average exponential rates of growth in dry weight ranged from 0.063–0.084 d–1. Length-date and dry weight-age curves were best described using one-cycle and two-cycle Gompertz functions, respectively. Weight-length relationship were, therefore, curvilinear on double logarithmic plots and were best described by a non-linear allometric function. Average rates of otolith ring deposition were 0.90, 1.09 and 0.73–1.26d–1. Rings were deposited daily from the day of complete yolk absorption in the first two cohorts, but interrupted ring deposition was observed over the first 27 d of the third cohort. Relatively low water temperatures, <9° C, coincided with the interruption and may have caused it.  相似文献

Eleven sharksuckers,Echeneis naucrates, in the Oita Ecological Aquarium spawned from 2 June to 3 December 1974. The spawning behavior began as soon as the lights were turned off. Just before a female spawned, it was driven toward the surface of the water by a group of males. The spawned eggs were pelagic and 2.6 mm in diameter. Approximately 500 eggs were spawned each day. Seventy larvae were hatched on 15 July, and 26 of them were reared until 1 September. We observed the behavior of their larvae and juvenile stages, from the hatching to the attaching phases. The caudal fins of the larvae expanded as they grew. They swam near the bottom with their caudal fins folded. When the sucking disk began to form on the back of a larva’s pectoral fin, it stood still with its caudal fin bent on bottom. After the formation of the sucking disk, a larva would lie on its stomach or back. Some quickly-growing specimens began to stick to the walls, pipes, or plates when they attained 55 mm SL, 35 days after hatching.  相似文献

A total of 4589 leptocephali of the congrid eel, Ariosoma balearicum, were examined from 17 cruises in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Myomere counts made on 915 of these indicated there were two ranges of number of myomeres that appear to be associated with separate spawning populations. Those with the higher range (high count: 128–137) were consistently 70–100mm in length in the Sargasso Sea from February to April and 20–80mm in length in the northern Sargasso Sea and Gulf Stream from September to October. Those with the lower range (low count: 120–130) were rare in the northern and eastern Sargasso Sea where they had consistently greater lengths than high count leptocephali and were most abundant in the Florida Current and Providence Channel. The geographic distributions of size and myomere ranges in relation to hydrography provide strong support for the hypothesis that high count eels found along the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) migrate across the Florida Current to spawn in the northwest Sargasso Sea. This migratory pattern is similar to those of Anguilla rostrata and Conger oceanicus, which use the southern Sargasso Sea for development as larvae. However, the distribution of high count leptocephali suggests that they use the entire Sargasso Sea gyre as a development area as larvae before crossing the Florida Current and recruiting to the SAB. The low count eels inhabiting the Bahamas appear to spawn near the banks and their abundance in the Providence Channel and southwest Sargasso Sea suggests most are retained close to the Bahamas. These two distinct styles of spawning, distribution and recruitment of larvae are hypothesized to be related to the different hydrographic regimes of the two juvenile habitats and the resulting constraints on growth and recruitment of larvae. Vertebral and myomere counts reported from other areas suggest there are distinct populations in other regions of the North Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

To be able to estimate the cumulative carbon budget at broader scales, it is essential to understand net ecosystem exchanges (NEE) of carbon and water in various ages and types of ecosystems. Using eddy-covariance (EC) in Douglas-fir dominated forests in the Wind River Valley, Washington, USA, we measured NEE of carbon, water, and energy from July through September in a 40-year-old stand (40YR) in 1998, a 20-year-old stand (20YR) in 1999, and a 450-year-old stand (450YR) during both years. All three stands were net carbon sinks during the dry, warm summers, with mean net daily accumulation of –0.30 g C m–2 d–1, –2.76 g C m–2 d–1, and –0.38 g C m–2 d–1, respectively, in the 20YR, 40YR, and 450YR (average of 1998, 1999) stands; but for individual years, the 450YR stand was a carbon source in 1998 (0.51 g C m–2 d–1) and a sink in 1999 (–1.26 g C m–2 d–1). The interannual differences for the summer months were apparent for cumulative carbon exchange at the 450YR stand, which had 46.9 g C m–2 loss in 1998 and 115.9 g C m–2 gain in 1999. As predicted, the 40YR stand assimilated the most carbon and lost the least amount of water to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration.  相似文献
