The authors present the results of a comparative study of Sonne dysentery and of the intestinal coli infection 0124 and 0151; significant differences in their epidemiology shown were chiefly caused by a different degree of pathogenicity of the causative agents of these diseases. A low degree of escherichia pathogenicity, and, in this connection, dependence of the character of the infection manifestation on the dose of the causative agent indicated food factor of the infection spread to be necessary for the origination of the clinically expressed disease. Epidemiological observations and bacteriological data showed that in diseases of escherichia etiology only those persons who had clinical manifestations of the disease could serve as epidemiologically significant sources of infection. In this connection prophylaxis of the mentioned affection should be primarily based on the intensification of the general sanitary measures.  相似文献

The analysis of sporadic morbidity due to acute intestinal infections and toxicoinfections caused by potentially pathogenic microorganisms is presented. The hypothesis stating that different pathogenic agents have different levels of pathogenic potential at a given stage of their evolution is proposed. Microorganisms with a low level of pathogenicity potential are characterized by the prevalence of the syndrome of toxicoinfection and by the rarity or absence of the syndrome of an acute intestinal disease. The prevalence of the latter is characteristic of potentially pathogenic microbes with a high level of pathogenicity potential making them similar to complete parasites.  相似文献

A short history of the concept of natural focal infections is presented: the idea put forward by D. K. Zabolotny?, E. I. Pavlovski?'s teaching, 3 stages of its development. A number of fundamental questions and the modern content of the concept are considered. The natural foci of infections are a combination of surface, soil and/or water ecosystems, including the population of the causative agent of infection. In contrast to surface ecosystems, in soil and water ecosystems the hosts of the causative agents of sapronotic infections ae soil invertebrates and hydrobios, in which these agents may circulate in biocenotic trophic chains. The circulation of the causative agents in natural foci is a discrete process; the mechanisms and forms of the existence of pathogenic bacteria during seasonal and prolonged periods between epidemics is considered. Special attention is given to latent (nonculturable) forms of bacteria. The complex character of the status of the causative agents of natural focal infections is discussed.  相似文献

Data on molecular epidemiology of bacterial infections is summarized. The term definitions of "molecular epidemiology", "taxonomic species" are given, the limits and species structure of prokaryotes are described. The basic mechanisms of the prokaryotes variability in the epidemic process, as well as the possibilities and limitations of microbiological, molecular-biological and population--genetic typing methods, are characterized. The tactics of molecular-biological studies in analyzing the population structure on the global, regional and local levels is presented. The economic effectiveness of measures taken with due consideration of information on the clonal structure of causative agents of hospital infections is shown.  相似文献

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) is a causative agent of sepsis and meningitis in newborns and diseases in pregnant women and nonpregnant adults. Various approaches, including both nongenetic and genetic techniques, are currently used for the study of epidemiology of GBS infections. In the present paper the different methods of molecular epidemiology of GBS infections are reviewed, and several novel approaches are introduced. The advantages and disadvantages of molecular methods are discussed and compared with traditional serotyping technique. The possible use of the molecular approaches for identification of different genetic lineages in GBS as well as for identification and control of the epidemiologically actual clones is discussed.  相似文献

A complex method for the epizootological and epidemiological surveillance of a number of bacterial and viral infections on the territories inside and outside their natural foci has been developed. The investigation techniques are described and the data on the isolation rate of each causative agent in different geographical zones are presented. In the natural foci of plague and tularemia, as well as on the territories outside such foci, the causative agents of intestinal yersiniosis, pseudotuberculosis, salmonellosis, erysipeloid, staphylococci and streptococci, arena- and arboviruses have been isolated from the rodents and ectoparasites under study. The results of this investigation suggest that the method may be recommended for use in medical institutions dealing with the problems of infections originating from natural foci.  相似文献

The data on the interaction of bacteria of the genus Bdellovibrio with the representatives of pathogenic Salmonella typhimurium are presented. Different types of such interaction are demonstrated: in a two-component system, in fluid media, in an agar layer and on the surface of a solid carrier. As shown for the first time, Bdellovibrio cells are capable of interacting not only with actively growing bacteria, but also with their noncultivable forms. The data obtained may serve as the basis for the study of possible practical use of such bacteria for controlling Gram-negative organisms, the causative agents of sapronotic infections.  相似文献

"Mikrob" Russian Research Anti-Plague Institute, Saratov Studies of the genomic evolution of pathogenic bacteria became a priority research trend of modern molecular genetics. Vibrio cholerae, whose pathogenic properties are conditioned by the presence of virulence blocks of differing phylogenetic origins in 2 chromosomes, turned out to be a unique model object for studies of evolutionary transformations of genomes that are causative agents of extra dangerous infections. The molecular-and-genetic mechanisms underlying the change of biovariants and the emergence of a cholera agent of a new serogroup are in the focus of attention. Finally, the possibility that the new V. cholerae pathogenic clone originated due to horizontal genetic transfers and recombination phenomena is under discussion in the survey.  相似文献

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) are an important cause of urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis and septicaemia in humans. Animals are recognized as a reservoir for human intestinal pathogenic E. coli, but whether animals are a source for human ExPEC is still a matter of debate. Pathologies caused by ExPEC are reported for many farm animals, especially for poultry, in which colibacillosis is responsible for huge losses within broiler chickens. Cases are also reported for companion animals. Commensal E. coli strains potentially carrying virulence factors involved in the development of human pathologies also colonize the intestinal tract of animals. This review focuses on the recent evidence of the zoonotic potential of ExPEC from animal origin and their potential direct or indirect transmission from animals to humans. As antimicrobials are commonly used for livestock production, infections due to antimicrobial-resistant ExPEC transferred from animals to humans could be even more difficult to treat. These findings, combined with the economic impact of ExPEC in the animal production industry, demonstrate the need for adapted measures to limit the prevalence of ExPEC in animal reservoirs while reducing the use of antimicrobials as much as possible.  相似文献

The theory of adaptive polymorphism predicts that species occupying broad ecological niches will be phenotypically and genotypically more varied than those occupying narrow niches. It is suggested that this theory has direct relevance to the epidemiology of microbial pathogens in that environmental pathogens inhabit a broader niche and should be expected to exhibit greater variation than pathogens that are obligate commensals. This proved to be the case when one obligate commensal, the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans, was compared with other Candida spp. and an environmental pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans. Further evidence of this relationship is derived from the literature. This observation adds further support to the theory of adaptive polymorphism, although the mechanisms of maintenance of polymorphism is asexually reproducing populations must be different from those in sexually reproducing populations. This observation may give important clues to the epidemiology of those infections for which it is not already known.  相似文献

The comparative study of the incidence of the pathogenicity markers (DNAase, RNAase, phosphatase and hemolytic activity) in shigellae and salmonellae, acknowledged as the causative agents of intestinal infections, and in opportunistic bacteria isolated from the feces of patients with acute intestinal diseases and healthy persons has been made. The study has revealed that DNAase and RNAase activity occurs most frequently in Shigella flexneri, in salmonellae and in opportunistic enterobacteria isolated from the intestinal contents of patients with acute intestinal diseases. In this respect they essentially differ from the same species of opportunistic enterobacteria isolated from healthy persons.  相似文献

In this review the data on the ecology of pathogenic Yersinia in soil ecosystems, based on prolonged observations, were analyzed and summarized. In contrast to saprophytic species, ubiquitously spread in nature, pathogenic representatives of the genus Yersinia occurred only in the soil of natural foci and of these, Y. pestis were found only in the soil of burrows of the main carriers. The complex of abiotic and biotic factors (temperature, humidity, chemical composition, interactions in biocenosis) which determined the possibility of the existence of Yersinia in the soil environment and the preservation of their pathogenic properties was considered. Special attention was paid to their geno-phenotypic variability as the main factor of the adaptation of the causative agents of plague, pseudotuberculosis and intestinal yersiniosis in the environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal and urinary tract pathogenic infections are aggravating the incidence and progression of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection into Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) more especially in the developing countries. This study was conducted to assess the common gastrointestinal and urinary infections among HIV/AIDS patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Ghana between April and December 2008. FINDINGS: This work reports on gastrointestinal and urinary tract pathogenic infections among 500 HIV seropositive and 300 HIV seronegative patients. There was a 35% (175/500) prevalence of intestinal parasites among HIV seropositive patients compared to 4.3% (13/300) in HIV seronegative patients. Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium accounted for 19% (95/500) and 14% (70/500) respectively, while Schistosoma mansoni, Strongyloides stercoralis and hookworm together accounted for 2% (10/500) of intestinal parasitic infections among the HIV seropositive patients. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in urinary parasitic infection between HIV seropositive 1% (2/500) and seronegative patients 0.7% (2/300). Most, 60 (86%) out of 70, of the urinary tract infection among the HIV seropositive patients was due to bacteria with E. coli being the most predominant isolate, 28 (47%) out of 60. There was no significant difference in infections based on age and gender. CONCLUSION: G. lamblia and Cryptosporidium were the most common gastrointestinal parasites detected while bacteria accounted for majority of the urinary tract infections among the HIV seropositive patients at the hospital.  相似文献

In many epidemiological models of microparasitic infections it is assumed that the infection process is governed by the mass-action principle, i.e. that the infection rate per host and per parasite is a constant. Furthermore, the parasite-induced host mortality (parasite virulence) and the reproduction rate of the parasite are often assumed to be independent of the infecting parasite dose. However, there is empirical evidence against those three assumptions: the infection rate per host is often found to be a sigmoidal rather than a linear function of the parasite dose to which it is exposed; and the lifespan of infected hosts as well as the reproduction rate of the parasite are often negatively correlated with the parasite dose. Here, we incorporate dose dependences into the standard modelling framework for microparasitic infections, and draw conclusions on the resulting dynamics. Our model displays an Allee effect that is characterized by an invasion threshold for the parasite. Furthermore, in contrast to standard epidemiological models a parasite strain needs to have a basic reproductive rate that is substantially greater than 1 to establish an infection. Thus, the conditions for successful invasion of the parasite are more restrictive than in mass-action infection models. The analysis further suggests that negative correlations of the parasite dose with host lifespan and the parasite reproduction rate helps the parasite to overcome the invasion constraints of the Allee-type dynamics.  相似文献

Chelonid herpesvirus (ChHV) and mycoplasmal infections cause similar clinical signs in terrestrial tortoises and may be the most important causative agents of rhinitis-stomatitis complex, a common disease in captive tortoises worldwide. Currently, diagnosis of ChHV and Mycoplasma spp. infections is most often based on serologic testing. However, serologic results only detect past exposure, and the specificity of these tests can be reduced due to antigenic cross-reactions with other pathogens. Molecular-based techniques could help to define the causative agent and to better manage infected tortoises. Using polymerase chain reaction, we analyzed 63 tortoises (59 spur-thighed tortoise, Testudo graeca; three Greek tortoise, Testudo ibera; and one Russian tortoise, Agryonemys horsfieldii) with clinical signs of rhinitis-stomatitis complex to identify the causative agent. Molecular evidence of ChHV type I (24%), type II (3%), and Mycoplasma agassizii (6%) infections, as well as coinfection of Mycoplasma-ChHV and both types of ChHV, were detected. Both ChHV and M. agassizii are considered pathogenic in captive tortoises and both are a threat to wild populations. However, neither agent was detected from most of the symptomatic tortoises we evaluated, indicating that other agents could be involved in the rhinitis-stomatitis complex.  相似文献

Escherichia coli strains are able to cause intestinal (enteritis, diarrhoeal diseases) and extraintestinal (urinary tract infections, sepsis, meningitis) infections. Most pathogenic E. coli strains produce specific fimbrial adhesins, which represent essential colonization factors: intestinal E. coli strains very often carry transferable plasmids with gene clusters specific for fimbrial adhesins, like K88 and K99, or colonization factor antigens (CFA) I and II. In contrast, the fimbrial gene clusters of extraintestinal E. coli strains, such as P, S, or F1C fimbriae, are located on the chromosomes. The fimbrial adhesin complexes consist of major and minor subunit proteins. Their binding specificity can generally be assayed in hemagglutination tests. In the case of fimbrial adhesins of intestinal E. coli strains, the major subunit proteins preferentially represent the hemagglutinating adhesins, whereas minor subunit proteins are the hemagglutinins of extraintestinal E. coli strains. Recently "alternative" adhesin proteins were identified, which have the capacity to bind to eukaryotic structures different from the receptors of the erythrocytes. Fimbrial adhesins are not constitutively expressed but are stringently regulated on the molecular level. Extraintestinal E. coli wild-type strains normally carry three or more fimbrial adhesin determinants, which have the capacity to influence the expression of one another (cross talk). Furthermore the fimbrial gene clusters undergo phase variation, which seems to be important for their contribution to pathogenesis of E. coli.  相似文献

Molecular epidemiology of Yersinia enterocolitica infections   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Yersinia enterocolitica is an important food-borne pathogen that can cause yersiniosis in humans and animals. The epidemiology of Y. enterocolitica infections is complex and remains poorly understood. Most cases of yersiniosis occur sporadically without an apparent source. The main sources of human infection are assumed to be pork and pork products, as pigs are a major reservoir of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica. However, no clear evidence shows that such a transmission route exists. Using PCR, the detection rate of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica in raw pork products is high, which reinforces the assumption that these products are a transmission link between pigs and humans. Several different DNA-based methods have been used to characterize Y. enterocolitica strains. However, the high genetic similarity between strains and the predominating genotypes within the bio- and serotype have limited the benefit of these methods in epidemiological studies. Similar DNA patterns have been obtained among human and pig strains of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica, corroborating the view that pigs are an important source of human yersiniosis. Indistinguishable genotypes have also been found between human strains and dog, cat, sheep and wild rodent strains, indicating that these animals are other possible infection sources for humans.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of the prevalence, intensity and effects of soil-transmitted helminth and protozoan infections was undertaken among patients at the Buea Hospital Annex located in Buea sub-division of Cameroon. Stool samples from 356 subjects (174 males and 182 females) were collected and processed using standard concentration methods. Our results showed that 31.0% of subjects were infected with intestinal helminths and the prevalence was higher in females (32.4%) than in males (30.5%). A significantly higher prevalence was observed in rural (47.2%) than in urban areas (21.0%); significance < 0.1%. Prevalence was highest among those aged between 6 and 12 years (41.4%). The total prevalence of intestinal helminth infections were 19.3% for Ascaris lumbricoides, 14.0% for hookworm and 11.8% for Trichuris trichiura. The intensity of infection was unevenly distributed, with very heavy loads concentrated in a few individuals. Data also showed that 28.1% (100/356) of the subjects were infected with protozoans. Females showed a higher prevalence (28.6%; 52/182) than males (20.7%; 36/174). Also, there was a significantly higher prevalence in rural (34.0%; 49/144) than urban areas (18.4%; 39/212); significance < 0.1%. The age group 6-12 years again had a higher prevalence (37.1%; 26/70). The total prevalence of intestinal protozoans was: Entamoeba histolytica (24.4%), Entamoeba coli (11.2%) and Giardia lamblia (0.6%). These relatively heavy prevalences in patients may be reduced by appropriate medication and maintaining strict personal hygiene. Health education, clean water supply, good sewage management and a congenial environment will all help to minimize infection.  相似文献
