Parallel evolution in phenotype may result when closely related taxa are adapting in the face of similar ecological pressures. Here, we discuss possible parallelism in shell morphology in the context of the microgeographic phylogeography of two conchologically distinct sympatric hydrocenid snails inhabiting a limestone outcrop and its cave system, Georissa pyrrhoderma and Georissa silaburensis, respectively, at Mount Silabur in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Our results show a certain degree of morphological parallelism of a third, possibly new, cryptic Georissa species within the same cave that strongly diverged from its above-ground sister species, G. pyrrhoderma. We found that both sympatric cave species have shifted from a more sculptured, conical shell toward a broader, less sculptured form.  相似文献

We analyse the phylogeographical structure in the cave snail Georissa filiasaulae Haase & Schilthuizen, 2007 (Gastropoda: Hydrocenidae) and its above‐ground sister species G. saulae (van Benthem‐Jutting, 1966) at limestone outcrops in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Morphometric and 16S mitochondrial DNA data for some 220 individuals reveal strong morphological differentiation, despite ongoing unidirectional gene flow from the epigean into the hypogean environment, strong, small‐scale genetic structuring within the cave and underground dispersal between caves that were previously thought to be isolated. We discuss these results – which constitute the first phylogeographical analysis of a terrestrial cave snail – in the light of speciation in cave organisms and across ecotones in general. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 727–740.  相似文献

Neutral mutation and evolutionary progress The process and causes of regressive evolution are still under debate. Contrary to DARWIN'S original assumption, Neo-Darwinian proponents make selection responsible for reduction. Biologically functionless structures like eye and pigmentation in cave animals deliver excellent material to study this problem. Comparison of regressive (eye, pigmentation, aggression, dorsal light reaction) and constructive traits (gustatory equipment, egg yolk content, feeding behavior) in epigean and cave fish (Astyanax fasciatus, Characidae) reveal a high variability of the regressive features in the cave forms. Contrary to this, the constructive traits are characterized by a low variability in epigean and cave fish. This difference is attributed to the lack of selection on regressive structures. The existence of an intermediate cave population between epigean and true cave fish of A. fasciatus makes possible the study of evolutionary rates. It is shown that the regressive traits do not evolve more quickly than the constructive ones do. On the contrary, constructive traits like egg yolk content are even more rapid because they are of great biological value in the cave biotope. Especially energy economy is claimed by Neo-Darwinists to play a decisive role as a selective force. Comparison of the development of epi- and hypogean larvae of A. fasciatus shows that the formation of a smaller and less differentiated eye in the cave specimens has no effect on body growth. Furthermore, even behavioral traits like aggressiveness, schooling, dorsal light reaction, or negative phototaxis, which all are not performed in darkness by the epigean ancestor, become genetically reduced in the cave fish. The principles of regressive evolution, loss of selection and increase in variability, play a central role in evolution in general. When biota with empty niches are colonized, stabilizing selection relaxes from the special adaptations to the niche inhabited before by the invading species. Variability may arise in these and is permitted as long as fitness is guaranteed. Such processes characterize adaptive radiation. Examples are given by the species flocks on isolated islands or in chemically abnormal lakes like those of the East African Rift Valley. Only secondarily, on the basis of the arisen variability, does directional selection promote the newly developing species into different niches. The loss of stabilizing selection is an important factor for the evolutionary process to be open for evolutionary progress.  相似文献

Abstract The ecotone zone between epigean and hypogean environments has been delimited for two limestone caves using a new method proposed herein. The richness and the diversity of the ecotone, epigean and hypogean environments and their similarities have also been determined. The ecotones were delimited using a similarity matrix between the inner and outer sectors of each cave. The ecotone of Dona Rita's cave was estimated to be 12 m long and the ecotone of Retiro's cave 16 m. The richness (S) of arthropods in Dona Rita's cave was higher in the ecotone (S = 131), intermediate in the epigean environment (S = 75) and lower in the hypogean system (S = 45). The invertebrate diversity (H′) was lower in the hypogean environment (H′ = 2.89) and not statistically different between the epigean environment and the ecotone (H′ = 3.56 and H′ = 3.76, respectively). The richness in Retiro's cave was higher in the ecotone (S = 86), intermediate in the epigean environment (S = 39) and lower in the hypogean system (S = 12). The invertebrate diversity was lower in the hypogean environment (H′ = 0.48), intermediate in the ecotone (H′ = 3.02) and higher in the epigean region (H′ = 3.29). Species migration patterns, differential environmental barriers and determination of accidental versus trogloxenes/troglophylous species are topics that are primarily approached by establishing ecotone zones in caves. The aim of the present paper is to establish the delimitation of theses zones.  相似文献

One of the most intriguing questions in evolutionary biology is the degree to which behavior is a necessary consequence of morphology. We explore this issue by examining phototactic behavior in epigean (eyed surface-dwelling) and troglomorphic (blind cave) forms of the teleost Astyanax fasciatus whose eyes were modified during embryogenesis by removing one or both lens vesicles from the epigean form or by transplanting the lens vesicle from an epigean fish into the optic cup of a blind cave form. Lens removal results in eye degeneration and blindness in adult epigean fish, whereas lens transplantation stimulates growth of the eye, inducing the development of optic tissues in the normally eyeless adult cave fish. Photoresponsiveness was examined by placing fish in an aquarium with one half illuminated and the other half dark and scoring their presence in the illuminated or dark half. Both the eyeless epigean fish and cave fish with induced eyes are indifferent to the illumination whereas the surface forms are scotophilic, suggesting that optic development and phototactic behavior are decoupled.  相似文献

Body shape of four distinct populations of Ancistrus cryptophthalmus from different caves in the São Domingos karst area and the local epigean (surface) Ancistrus species were compared using geometric morphometrics. Angélica and Bezerra catfishes were closer to each other and successively to the studied sample of epigean catfishes than to Passa Três and São Vicente I catfishes. Greater similarity between catfishes from the Angélica‐Bezerra cave system to epigean catfishes than to other cave catfishes may represent a plesiomorphic feature. On the other hand, the present analyses allowed the distinction between Passa Três and São Vicente I catfishes, which inhabited the same cave system. Topographic isolation due to the presence of several waterfalls interposed between the stream reaches where these catfishes live may explain such morphological differentiation. Also, the presence of a waterfall downstream of the reach where the Angélica sample was obtained may have contributed to the partial isolation of these catfishes from those living in Bezerra Cave. Differences in population sizes probably influenced the degrees of morphological differentiation observed among the cave populations. The mosaic distribution of character states indicated that the four populations of A. cryptophthalmus have evolved rather independently, but the continuous variation suggests a recent connection between these populations, perhaps with a limited gene flow. Considering other features such as reduction of eyes and pigmentation, and changes in body shape, a separate species status for the epigean and hypogean Ancistrus species from the São Domingos karst area has been maintained.  相似文献

The early morphogenesis of the lens and the expression of the γs-crystallin gene was studied in epigean Astyanax fasciatus and its cave-dwelling derivative. At early stages, the lens of the cave fish develops in a way that is similar to the epigean form. Later, the developmental timing is delayed and growth ceases in the cave-fish lens. With the beginning of cytodifferentiation, the development of the lens breaks down. Crystallin lens fibres are not produced at any time and the γs-crystallin gene, which is transcribed during a limited period in the lens of epigean fishes, is not active in cave specimens. This study confirms earlier immunofluorescence observations that demonstrated the lack of crystallin proteins in the cave-fish lens, but is in contrast to results on the blind mole rat, which showed a persistence of functioning crystallins in the degenerated lens of this species. The significance of developmental constraints in regressive evolution is discussed.  相似文献

The genetic structure of populations of two hypogean Somali cyprinid species was compared by analysing genetic variation at 30 allozyme loci. The two species, Phreatichthys andruzzii and Barbopsis devecchii , are of particular interest, representing two different steps in adaptation to cave life, as indicated by several morphological features including eye regression. Phreatichthys is completely anophthalmic, while Barbopsis shows a highly variable microphthalmia. Results showed a close relationship between Phreatichthys and Barbopsis , suggesting their origin from a common epigean ancestor. Population structure of the two species differs and levels of gene flow are much higher between the Barbopsis populations than between the Phreatichthys populations. Two possible scenarios leading to the current situation are hypothesized.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Caves are often assumed to be predator-free environments for cave fishes. This has been proposed to be a potential benefit of colonising these otherwise harsh environments. In order to test this hypothesis, the predator–prey interaction of a belostomatid (predator) and a cave fish (prey) occurring in the Cueva del Azufre (Tabasco, Mexico) was investigated with two separate experiments.
2. In one experiment, individual Belostoma were given a chance to prey on a cave fish, the cave form of the Atlantic molly ( Poecilia mexicana ), to estimate feeding rates and size-specific prey preferences of the predator. In the other experiment, population density of Belostoma was estimated using a mark–recapture analysis in one of the cave chambers.
3. Belostomatids were found to heavily prey on cave mollies and to exhibit a prey preference for large fish. The mark–recapture analysis revealed a high population density of the heteropterans in the cave.
4. The absence of predators in caves is not a general habitat feature for cave fishes. None the less predation regimes differ strikingly between epigean and hypogean habitats. The prey preference of Belostoma indicates that cave-dwelling P. mexicana experience size-specific predation pressure comparable with surface populations, which may have implications for life-history evolution in this cave fish.  相似文献

Aim  To investigate molecular phylogenetic divergence and historical biogeography of the cave-dwelling pseudoscorpion genus Protochelifer.
Location  Caves and nearby epigean habitats in southern Australia were sampled from western Victoria, Naracoorte Caves, Flinders Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Nullarbor Plain and south-west Western Australia.
Methods  Allozyme electrophoresis (57 individuals) and a 569-base-pair section of the mtDNA COI gene (22 individuals) were used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among four cave species and three epigean species from 13 locations.
Results  Phylogenetic reconstruction using the allozyme and mtDNA sequence data revealed a similar topology, showing recent speciation of several Protochelifer populations in caves from Naracoorte to the Nullarbor Plain. Naracoorte Caves contained a single species, Protochelifer naracoortensis , found in four separate caves, while all other cave species appear to be restricted to single caves.
Main conclusions  At a local scale, as indicated by the four Naracoorte caves, dispersal is thought to occur via micro- and mesocaverns, and possibly by phoresy using insect or bat vectors. With current data we are unable to determine if cavernicolous species of Protochelifer have arisen from a single cave colonization event followed by phoretic dispersal on bats to other caves, or multiple cave-invasion events from independent epigean ancestors. Genetic heterogeneity among Protochelifer populations from Nullarbor caves suggest that P. cavernarum , the only species presently recorded from this region, is likely to constitute a species complex requiring further study to fully resolve its relationships.  相似文献

Food restriction is one of the major and most common constraints that subterranean animals face in their biotope. Cave-dwelling organisms thus have to cope with fasting periods that can extend from a month to a year. However, adaptive fasting resistance previously found in subterranean fauna has only been highlighted by direct comparisons with phylogenetically distant epigean organisms, which could severely impact conclusions. Here we report physiological and metabolic responses to 42 days of fasting followed by 10 days of refeeding in two populations (one subterranean and one epigean) of Calotriton asper. In the fed state (control), the hypogean population exhibited a hypometabolism together with higher glycogen (+ 25% in liver and muscles) and triglyceride stores (+ 50% in muscles). During the fasting period, cave individuals exhibited a 20% decrease in VO2 whereas epigean individuals experienced no significant change. In addition, the energetic reserves always remained higher in the hypogean population. According to phylogenic and biogeographic data, cave colonization by this species dates back to less than 10,000 years, suggesting a rapid selection of adaptive traits related to fasting. This study strongly suggests that cave colonization induces a decrease in metabolism together with a higher capacity to accumulate energy reserves and therefore to withstand unpredictable fasting periods.  相似文献

The genus Anthrobia Tellkampf, 1844 is revised and expanded to include two epigean species, Anthrobia acuminata ( Emerton, 1913 ) comb. nov., and A. whiteleyae sp. nov., and two troglobites, the type species A. monmouthia Tellkampf, 1844 , and A. coylei sp. nov. The female of A. acuminata is described for the first time. All four Anthrobia species were added to a phylogenetic analysis of erigonine genera. Analysis of this matrix results in a single most parsimonious tree (length = 915, CI = 0.23, RI = 0.58; uninformative characters excluded: length = 911, CI = 0.23), which places Anthrobia sister to Diplocentria Hull, 1911. Troglobitic Anthrobia and epigean Anthrobia are both monophyletic. In comparison to the epigean species, troglobitic Anthrobia exhibit the following putative adaptations to cave life: loss of eyes, elongation of the legs, and reduction of the tracheal system. The reliability of phylogenetic results indicating monophyly of cave Anthrobia are discussed in light of the fact that potentially cave adaptive synapomorphies support this relationship.  相似文献

The earliest gene duplications in the evolution of the intermediate filament proteins created the ancestors of acidic keratins, basic keratins, nonepithelial intermediate filament proteins, and lamins. Biochemistry and function of cytoplasmic intermediate filaments differ greatly from those of lamins. Cytoplasmic intermediate filament proteins have a different cellular location than lamins, form different types of supramolecular structures, and are missing a protein segment found in lamins; but the data presented here indicate that the cytoplasmic intermediate filaments do not have a common ancestor separate from the ancestor of lamins. In the non-epithelial intermediate filament branch, the ancestor of neurofilament proteins and the common ancestor of desmin, vimentin, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) diverged first. By evolutionary criteria, the intermediate filament protein recently discovered in neuronal cells does not belong to the neurofilament family but is more closely related to desmin, vimentin, and GFAP. Sequences of different sub-domains yield different evolutionary trees, possibly indicating existence of sub- domain-specific functions.   相似文献

Morphological adaptations of cave-dwelling organisms including different groups of Coleoptera have fascinated researchers since a long time. Nevertheless, very few detailed documentations of the anatomy of cave beetles using modern techniques are available. In this study, we describe and illustrate external and internal cephalic features of free-living and cave-dwelling trechine carabid beetles using digital microscopy, SEM, micro-CT, and computer-based 3D reconstruction. Morphological characteristics found in three selected species with different habitat preferences are compared. The following derived features distinguish a troglobite species (Sinaphaenops wangorum Ueno et Ran 1998) from a species living in the entrance of caves (Trechiotes perroti Jeannel 1954) and from a fully epigean species (Bembidion sp.): (1) the optic lobes are completely missing; (2) the head capsule, mouth parts, and antennae are distinctly elongated; (3) some muscle attachment areas are shifted; and (4) an additional dilator of the pharynx is present. Despite of conspicuous differences likely related with subterranean habits, the link of some cephalic features to this specific habitat preference remains uncertain.  相似文献

The group density of four species of cave fishes (Caecobarbus geertsi, Barbopsis devecchii, Astyanax gen. and Uegitglanis zammaranoi) and of two taxonomically related epigean species (Barbus conchonius and Hyphessobricon scholzei) was measured tridimensionally in an experimental aquarium, using a video recorder and a mirror inclined at 45° placed on top of the aquarium. The experiments were conducted in dim red light. The illumination was continuous in the case of cave fishes. For the epigean forms a 12/12 LD cycle was superimposed using dim achromatic sources. The relative positions of individuals within their own specific group were registered hourly during a week (168 h). Results show that in cave forms, the mean density of groups falls within the theoretical limits of random distribution values in all cases, whereas epigean species display a non-random aggregation tendency.  相似文献

We studied the locomotor rhythmicity in heptapterine catfishes, genus Taunayia, under free-running conditions (DD) and LD cycles (12:12). Taunayia sp., anophthalmic and depigmented undescribed species from a cave in northeastern Brazil, is the fourth Brazilian troglobitic catfish studied with focus on circadian rhythms. Weak free-running rhythmicity, with absence of significant circadian components, was observed for this species when compared to the epigean, eyed relatives. On the other hand, the studied troglobitic catfishes in general presented significant circadian rhythms under LD cycles, with activity peaks in the night phase probably corresponding to nocturnal activity pattern inherited from their epigean ancestors. However, no residual oscillations were observed after transition from LD to DD. This indicates masking of activity by light-dark cycles. Regression of circadian rhythmicity in the stable, permanently dark subterranean habitat was also observed for other cave fishes. Such regression corroborates the notion that circadian rhythmicity is mainly selected in the epigean environment by ecological factors, namely daily cycles of light and/or temperature.  相似文献

The remarkably discontinuous distribution of the cave shrimp genus Troglocaris in South France, West Balkans, and West Caucasus has long been considered a biogeographic enigma. To solve it, its phylogeny was reconstructed by analyzing sequences from two mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase I and 16S rRNA) and one nuclear gene (28S rRNA) using maximum likelihood, parsimony and Bayesian inference. The genus was found to be polyphyletic because the French taxon T. inermis had no direct common ancestry with other Troglocaris taxa but was sister to the epigean freshwater atyid Dugastella valentina. All other Troglocaris species constituted a well-supported monophylum, the second cave shrimp genus Spelaeocaris nested within. The monophylum had a well-defined structure: (1) a clade restricted to the Dinaric area of the Western Balkans containing the type species T. anophthalmus along with some unnamed species, and (2) a geographically mixed clade split between the Caucasian T. kutaissiana species complex on one, and T. hercegovinensis, S. pretneri, plus an unnamed taxon on the other side. It was surprising to find the dichotomy between the Caucasian and one of the West-Balkan lineages so low in the phylogenetic hierarchy of the genus. Taking into account molecular rates of other decapods, we tentatively dated this split at 6-11 Myr. This time is in agreement with the brackish and freshwater phase of the Paratethys thus allowing for a freshwater common ancestor of Caucasian and Dinaric cave shrimps. This would weaken the marine relicts hypothesis that has often been invoked to explain the distribution of freshwater cave species with close marine relatives.  相似文献

DARWIN's statement, that rudimentary parts of organisms are apt to be highly variable, is also true for the regressive structures of cavernicolous animals. On the other hand, adaptive traits develop under cave conditions, the variability of which is lowered rather than increased, compared to that of their precursors in the epigean population. These differences in the genetically controlled variability of constructive and degenerative features indicate action and nonaction of natural selection.  相似文献
