Like many other gobies, male Isaza (Gymnogobius isaza) which are endemic to Lake Biwa, Japan, exclusively care for broods in nests. This goby may have an optimal range of brood size (i.e., an average clutch size of about 2000–3000 eggs) within which they may produce larger numbers of hatching young because much larger broods may be destroyed by fungal infection before hatching. This optimal brood size hypothesis (Takahashi et al. in J Ethol 22:153–159, 2004) predicts that (1) after spawning, both males and females will refuse additional spawning by other gravid females (second females) to keep brood sizes within optimal ranges, (2) larger fish will repel second females more successfully than will smaller fish, and thus, (3) both sexes prefer larger mates. To examine these predictions, we first observed Isaza’s aggressive behaviors in aquaria and investigated whether fish attacked and repelled second females that were introduced after spawning, and, if so, what were the sizes of fish that did so. Large fish, regardless of sex, aggressively prevented second females from entering the nest, but second females larger than the pairs displaced the pair females forcibly and spawned eggs into their clutches. Mate choice experiments showed that males preferred large females. Although females’ choice of large mates was not confirmed, many results may largely coincide with the predictions of the optimal brood size hypothesis. Thus, Isaza males’ choice of large mates will be advantageous for defending against brood parasitism by conspecific females and for achieving optimal clutch size.  相似文献

Male body size was tested for its influence on female mate choice, male-male competition and ability to defend broods in the river bullhead, Cottus gobio L., a polygynous fish with paternal care. Females presented with two potential mates of different sizes significantly preferred to spawn with the larger male. Males smaller than, or 1·5 times longer than, the female were rarely selected as mates. Larger males were more successful in defending their brood from conspecifics, which may explain female preference for them. Unmated large males displaced smaller guarding males from their nests and retained the acquired egg masses. Competition between males for nest sites with eggs can be accounted for by the preference of females for males already guarding eggs: by seizing a nest containing egg masses, a male will increase his chance of being chosen.  相似文献

We tested whether daily mortality rates (DMR) of smallmouth bass offspring were influenced by life interval, offspring density and growth, parental male attributes, and selected mortality factors during parental care in a regulated Virginia stream. Mortality averaged 9.5% per day (range 5.2–13.9%) and 94.1% total (range 80.9–99.5%) from egg deposition to the juvenile period (29–36 d) for individual broods. Offspring losses were primarily attributed to fungus (Saprolegnia parasitica) infection of eggs and to American eel, Anguilla rostrata, predation. DMR were significantly higher for the interval from swim-up of larvae to metamorphosis relative to earlier and later intervals. There was no significant autocorrelation of DMR among life intervals for individual broods, indicating that relative mortality rates were inconsistent among broods through time. DMR were also uncorrelated with the number of offspring per brood, offspring growth rates, and parental male attributes, except during egg and embryo intervals. Daily egg mortality was negatively related to male size and positively related to the number of eggs per nest, suggesting that density-dependent egg mortality may have been partially offset in nests of larger males. Larger males received more eggs, tended to maintain larger broods throughout parental care, and contributed a high proportion of the total number of juveniles reared. Parentage analyses of the paternally caring goby Rhinogobius sp. OR were performed using microsatellite DNA markers and examination of developmental stages of eggs collected from five nests with parental males in the wild. Four of five nests had egg masses with eggs at the same developmental stages from single females. In one nest, the egg mass with eggs at three different developmental stages originated from four females, and eggs of whole developmental stages were observed within the egg mass of each female. This observation suggests that in this goby embryonic stage is an inaccurate indicator of the number of mates.  相似文献

I studied the parental care behavior of the Madagascar paradise flycatcher Terpsiphone mutata in northwestern Madagascar. I especially focused on feeding, brooding and vigilance behaviors. Feeding rate did not differ between males and females, but females spent more time at the nest than males. Females dedicated their time to brooding, while males perched on the nest and were vigilant. Both parents changed the feeding rate in relation to brood size, so the feeding rate per nestling was not different among nests of different brood size. Duration of brooding by females increased with decreasing brood size, suggesting that the Royama effect, the pattern of lower feeding rate per nestling in larger broods, did not apply in this study. Males spent more time on vigilance than females. Anti-predator vigilance by males should be important for nestling survival given the high predation pressure typical of this population. In conclusion, males provide considerable parental care probably to minimize nestling starvation and to avoid nest predation. My results are not consistent with the general pattern of less parental effort by males in monogamous, sexually dimorphic species.  相似文献

Summary First clutches of double-brooded eastern phoebes Sayornis phoebe were manipulated (up two eggs, down 2 eggs or no change) to test for intraseasonal reproductive tradeoffs and to test whether size of first brood influenced food delivery rates to nestlings and nestling quality in second broods.Considering all nests from both broods, rate of feeding nestlings increased linearly with brood size but nestling mass per nest decreased with increasing brood size. High nestling weights in small broods may have resulted from parents delivering better quality food, but we did not test this.Among treatment groups in first broods, nestlings from decreased broods weighed more than those in control or increased broods. Treatment did not influence the likelihood that second nests would be attempted after successful first nests nor did it alter the interval between nests. Nestlings of parents that renested weighed more than those of parents that did not, regardless of treatment, suggesting that post-fledging care may preclude renesting. Mass of individual females did not change between broods, regardless of brood size. Clutch sizes of second attempts were not affected by manipulations of first broods but increasing first broods reduced the number of nestlings parents were able to raise to day 11 in their second broods. However, manipulation of first broods did not affect mean nestling mass per nest of nestlings that survived to day 11.In phoebes, parents of small first broods are able to raise nestlings in better condition. We predict that in harsh years, parents of small first broods would be more likely to renest. Parents of enlarged first broods sacrificed quality of offspring in second broods, which seems a reasonable strategy if nestlings from second broods have lower reproductive value.  相似文献

Traditionally, male parental effort and mate attraction effortare expected to be in conflict as they compete for the sameresource budget. However, the quality of care provided by themale may be of a direct benefit to females and may provide animportant mate choice cue. In a laboratory experiment, we examinedhow males modified their parental behavior with respect to matingopportunity by allowing male sand gobies to mate with a singlefemale either in a big or small nest (a constraint on futuremating potential). We then exposed half of these males to thevisual stimulus from additional females and recorded male eggfanning and nest building (two components of care), courtshipbehavior, and reproductive success through out the brood cycle.We found that males fanned longer and more frequently and didmore nest construction in the presence of females and in bignests. Males guarding large nests courted females more thandid males guarding small nests. All males consumed eggs duringthe brood cycle, but complete clutch cannibalism was most frequentwhen males were guarding small nests in the absence of females.The pattern of filial cannibalism that we observed suggeststhat males prematurely terminated care when their reproductivepotential was low, that is, when there was little nest spacefor additional mating and no mates present. We found no supportfor a trade-off between mate attraction and parental care. Indeed,taken together our results suggest that males may use parentalcare as a courtship strategy and that males who invest in mateattraction also have higher parental effort.  相似文献

Duration of paternal care in the burying beetle Nicrophorus orbicollis Say is highly variable. Both parents bury and defend mouse-sized vertebrate carcasses as food resources for their offspring, but males abandon their broods several days before females. Nests defended by single female parents were taken over by aggressive conspecifics in live of nine cases, whereas only six of 16 nests defended by both parents were taken over. In the event of a takeover, the intruding beetle replaced the resident beetle of the same sex, destroyed any eggs that were present, and paired with the remaining resident to produce a new clutch. Broods raised by usurpers following takeovers were less successful than broods raised by initial residents on unused carcasses. The majority of takeovers occurred 35 days after carcass burial. The occurrence of nest intrusions by conspecifics did not significantly influence duration of male parental care; when conspecific intruders were excluded from nests males remained with their broods (± S.E.) 11·2 ± 0·8 days ( n = 15), and when intruders were added to nests males remained with their broods 12·2 ± 0·6 days ( n = 8). Conflict for carcasses intensified in response to larger brood mass, but duration of male care was unaffected by brood mass. Overall. brood mass and the presence or absence of intruders explained only 5% of the variance associated with brood abandonment by males.  相似文献

Filial cannibalism has been described in many fish species with male parental care, and has typically been explained as a response to high energetic costs of brood defence and decreased feeding opportunities during the period of care. We investigated filial cannibalism in an insect, the assassin bug Rhinocoris tristis. In this species, males guard eggs of a number of females, cannibalizing some of their offspring within the brood. We monitored guarding males in both the field and the laboratory. Males typically ate eggs around the periphery of the brood, which were those most likely to have been parasitized by wasps. However, cannibalism persisted in the laboratory in the absence of parasites, and the number of cannibalized eggs was related to the length of care and overall brood size, suggesting that males use eggs as an alternative source of food. This conclusion was further supported by the fact that males in the field did not lose weight while guarding, despite being unable to forage efficiently while caring. Males were also observed to adopt broods, but in a laboratory experiment did not eat more eggs from adopted than from their own broods.  相似文献

Nest protection against intruders is an indispensable component of avian parental care. In species with biparental care, both mates should evolve nest defence behaviour to increase their reproductive success. In most host-parasite systems, host females are predicted to have more important roles in nest defence against brood parasites, because they typically are primarily responsible for clutch incubation. Male antiparasitic behaviour, on the other hand, is often underestimated or even not considered at all. Here we investigated sex-specific roles in four aspects of great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) nest defence against a brood parasite—the cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), namely (1) mobbing, (2) nest attendance/guarding, (3) nest checking and (4) egg ejection. Using dummy experiments, simulating brood parasitism and by video-monitoring of host nests we found that males took the key roles in cuckoo mobbing and nest guarding, while females were responsible for nest checking and egg ejection behaviours. Such partitioning of parental roles may provide a comprehensive clutch protection against brood parasitism.  相似文献

Synopsis Mating success of males and its correlates were investigated in a natural population of the polygynous fluvial sculpinCottus nozawae. Furthermore, the female mate preference of this species was examined experimentally under alternative conditions for mating in a stream. The mating success of individual males (the number of females with which a male mated) ranged between 0 and 8 with a mean of 2.41 in 1983 and 2.52 in 1989, in a population of which the sex ratio was about 1 : 2 in both years, skewed toward females. Mainly due to the excess of nests without egg masses and the few nests with one egg mass, the distribution of male mating success did not fit a Poisson distribution, indicating its non-randomness. Male mating success was not correlated either with the size of the nest rocks or with the male size, suggesting that these two variables are not determinants of mating success. The mate choice experiments demonstrated that females of this species more frequently chose smaller males as mates whose nests already contained eggs than large males without eggs. Additionally, an analysis of stomach contents of guarding males suggested that the parental males ate their own eggs during egg guarding (filial-cannibalism). Based on these results and on a comparison of reproductive characteristics with congeneric species, it is suggested that one of the most important determinants for female mate choice inCottus species may be whether or not parental males are filial egg cannibals.  相似文献

Abstract In many egg-laying animals, some females spread their clutch among several nests. The fitness effects of this reproductive tactic are obscure. Using mathematical modeling and field observations, we analyze an unexplored benefit of egg spreading in brood parasitic and other breeding systems: reduced time at risk for offspring. If a clutch takes many days to lay until incubation and embryo development starts after the last egg, by spreading her eggs a parasitic female can reduce offspring time in the vulnerable nest at risk of predation or other destruction. The model suggests that she can achieve much of this benefit by spreading her eggs among a few nests, even if her total clutch is large. Field data from goldeneye ducks Bucephala clangula show that egg spreading enables a fecund female to lay a clutch that is much larger than average without increasing offspring time at risk in a nest. This advantage increases with female condition (fecundity) and can markedly raise female reproductive success. These results help explain the puzzle of nesting parasites in some precocial birds, which lay eggs in the nests of other females before laying eggs in their own nest. Risk reduction by egg spreading may also play a role in the evolution of other breeding systems and taxa-for instance, polyandry with male parental care in some birds and fishes.  相似文献

The trade-off between parental care and feeding was studied in the male two-spotted goby (Gobiusculus flavescens F.). Two temperatures, 8.5 degrees C and 13.0 degrees C, were used, with five replicates at each temperature, in order to determine whether temperature influenced parental behaviour. In each replicate, two males and four females were introduced to an aquarium, where the males chose between two nests and courted the females. In each replicate, one male spawned. After spawning, the males guarded the eggs until hatching. The guarding males' behaviour was recorded with a video camera twice a day (15 min each time), once before and once after they were fed. The male's condition (c-factor) was calculated at the start of the experiment and after egg hatching. The eggs were spawned in an artificial nest (half of a PVC tube), and attached to the nest in a single layer. The areas with eggs (representing brood size) were marked after spawning and the fry counted after hatching (which was used to calculate area hatched). Numbers of prey eaten (plankton) and number of aggressive encounters between the guarding male and the other fishes were recorded. Time spent in the nest and time used on fertilisation, fanning and cleaning were estimated and related to egg age, brood size, hatching success, temperature and food availability (no food or food).The results showed that feeding (expected to influence future reproduction) decreased and parental expenditure (current reproduction) increased, as the eggs developed (became closer to independence). Parental expenditure was significantly higher at 13.0 degrees C than at 8.5 degrees C, presumably due to higher oxygen demands by the eggs, and a greater risk of egg-infections. The c-factor of the males guarding eggs decreased over time, in contrast to the non-guarding males' c-factor. Guarding males' aggressiveness decreased as the eggs got older, but increased just before hatching. A possible explanation for this could be the decreasing intrusion by the non-guarding male and females caused by high aggressive behaviour by the guarding male early in the brood cycle. The exploitation of the nest (percentage of total nest area covered by eggs) seemed to determine the amount of parental expenditure and loss of condition, while brood size (area of eggs) had no effect.  相似文献

Parental investment theory states that an individual will trade‐off present and future reproductive potential to maximize lifetime reproductive success. Only when parental care is costly in terms of reduced future reproductive potential should individuals be sensitive to changes in the value of current offspring and adjust their care. Here, we examine temporal variation in parental care decision‐making in bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), in which care is provided by males called ‘parentals’. Previous research has shown that parentals that nest early in the breeding season are in higher energetic condition than those that nest later, and early nesting males appear not to pay an opportunity cost to their care in terms of reduced future reproductive potential. Early nesting males also may have higher paternity in their broods than later nesting males. To examine the parental care decisions made by early and mid‐season nesting parentals, we experimentally reduced males’ perceived paternity by swapping eggs between nests. We found that experimental males that nested early in the breeding season adjusted their brood defence behaviour similarly to control males, which had sham egg swaps performed. Conversely, experimental males that nested mid‐season significantly decreased their brood defence behaviour after the manipulation as compared with control males. Thus, unlike mid‐season nesting males, early nesting males appear relatively insensitive to changes in brood value (paternity), possibly because early nesting males pay little cost in terms of reduced future reproductive potential to providing full care or because these males have a predisposition to high paternity.  相似文献

Conspecific brood parasitism (CBP), an alternative reproductive tactic where some females lay eggs in the nests of other females of the same species, occurs in many animals with egg care. It is particularly common in waterfowl, for reasons that are debated. Many waterfowl females nest near their birthplace, making it likely that some local females are relatives. We analyse brood parasitism in a Hudson Bay population of common eiders, testing predictions from two alternative hypotheses on the role of relatedness in CBP. Some models predict host-parasite relatedness, others predict that parasites avoid close relatives as hosts. To distinguish between the alternatives, we use a novel approach, where the relatedness of host-parasite pairs is tested against the spatial population trend in pairwise relatedness. We estimate parasitism, nest take-over and relatedness with protein fingerprinting and bandsharing analysis of egg albumen, nondestructively sampled from each new egg in the nest throughout the laying period. The results refute the hypothesis that parasites avoid laying eggs in the nests of related hosts, and corroborate the alternative of host-parasite relatedness. With an estimated r of 0.12-0.14, females laying eggs in the same nest are on average closer kin than nesting neighbour females. Absence of a population trend in female pairwise relatedness vs. distance implies that host-parasite relatedness is not only an effect of strong natal philopatry: some additional form of kin bias is also involved.  相似文献

In a population of moorhens (Gallinula chloropus), at least27% of netting females laid one or more eggs in a neighbor'snest Females laid parasitically under three conditions: 56%of parasitic eggs were from nesting females that preceded layinga dutch in their own nest by a parasitic laying bout, 19% werefrom females whose nests were depredated before clutch completionand that laid the following egg parasiticaDy, and 25% were froma small number of females without territories, "non-nesting"parasites, that each laid a series of parasitic eggs. Clutchsizes varied greatly between females, but nesting females eachlaid a consistent clutch size both within and between seasonsfor a given mate and territory. Nesting females that employeda dual strategy of brood parasitism and parental care producedextra eggs that they laid in the nests of neighbors before layinga dutch in their own nests. Two out of ten females whose dutchesI experimentally removed during the laying period were successfullyinduced to lay their next egg in the nest of a neighbor. Nestingfemales that laid parasitically selected their hosts opportunisticallyfrom among the nests dosest to their territories. An experimentin which parasitic eggs were removed and hosts left to rearonly their own young showed that parasites did not choose hoststhat were better parents than pairs with contemporary neststhat were not parasitized. Females that only laid parasiticaDywithin a given season timed their parasitic laying bouts poorlyand achieved no reproductive success. Parasitic young rarelyfledged, and the mean seasonal reproductive success of nestingbrood parasites did not differ from that of nonparasitic females.However, the variance in reproductive success of nesting broodparasites was significantly higher than that of nonparasiticfemales.  相似文献

It has been proposed that blue–green egg colouration in certain avian species has evolved as a signal of female and egg quality to males, affecting their investment in the brood according to the differential allocation scenario. A recent experiment has successfully manipulated male investment by placing dummy eggs simulating the extremes in the blue–green natural reflectance. Here we have substituted one egg in certain pied flycatcher clutches with a single deep‐blue (blue) or light‐blue (pale) dummy egg and used other clutches as controls. Blue dummy eggs reflected more in the blue–green part of the spectrum than natural and pale dummy eggs, which were similar in reflectance. Nestlings in nests with one blue dummy egg during laying and incubation attained a significantly higher mass and condition than those in nests with one pale dummy egg or in control broods, when controlling for phenology, brood size and blue–green chroma of the clutch. Only a shift in parental investment can have induced this highly significant effect. Preference for deeply coloured clutches associated with high‐quality females and their maternal effects may explain stimulation by a single supernormal stimulus emanating from multiple objects like clutches.  相似文献

Subsocial burrower bugs (Heteroptera: Cydnidae) provide unique opportunities to investigate evolutionary ecological questions regarding parental provisioning and family dynamics. Observations and marked nutlet‐setting experiments in the field showed that Adomerus triguttulus females progressively delivered mint nutlets into nests harbouring nymphs under the litter. More than one female often attended nymphs, but not eggs, in a nest in the field. The number of nymphs aggregating in a nest with a single female was usually smaller than that in a nest with two females, suggesting the joining of different families and facultative joint parental care. There was a positive correlation between the number of nutlets delivered and the number of nymphs in a nest. The number of attendant females also affected the amount of provisioning; more nutlets were found for second‐instar broods with more females. The effect of brood size on provisioning was confirmed for families under laboratory rearing. Maternal provisioning also varied with the developmental stage of offspring; second‐instar broods received more nutlets than first‐instar broods, with a temporal decrease in provisioning during the moulting of nymphs. Considering the growing evidence of food solicitation signals of young in subsocial insects, the observed finely tuned supply of food by the female could be induced by begging signals from the nymphs.  相似文献

Theory suggests that males that are larger than their competitors may have increased mating success, due to both greater competitive ability and increased attractiveness to females. We examined how male mating success varies with male size in the tessellated darter Etheostoma olmstedi. Previous work has shown that large males tend to move around and breed in vacant breeding sites, and consequently provide less care for their eggs, while smaller individuals can be allopaternal, caring for the eggs of other males as well as for their own. We studied female egg deposition in a natural breeding population using artificial breeding sites and in the laboratory, where female choice of spawning site was restricted to two breeding sites tended by two males of different sizes. In both the field and the laboratory, nests tended by larger males were more likely to receive new eggs. Additionally, the mean size of males associated with a nest was positively correlated with both the maximum coverage of eggs at the nest and the number of times new eggs were deposited. We discuss how the increased mating success of larger males, despite their decreased parental care, may help explain allopaternal care in this species [Current Zoology 56 (1): 1-5, 2010].  相似文献

Providing parental care is costly for the parent, but generally beneficial for the young whose survival, growth and reproductive value can be increased. Selection should strongly favour an optimal distribution of parental resources, depending on the relationship between the costs and benefits for parents and their offspring. Parental care is characterized by trade offs in investment, for example between egg size and number of young or providing resources at the egg stage versus the post-hatching stage. Females of the spider Stegodyphus lineatus (Eresidae) produce a single small brood with small eggs and provide the young with regurgitated fluid and later, with their body contents via matriphagy. We asked whether females adjust the investment of resources differentially into eggs, regurgitation feeding and matriphagy, and how maternal investment affects the size of the young at dispersal. We followed the growth of young of broods in the lab and in the field and manipulated brood size in order to determine the pattern of resource allocation. We found that brood size was positively correlated with body mass: larger females had larger broods. Females provided 95% of their body mass to the young, allocating more resources to regurgitation than to matriphagy. Females provided regurgitated food to the young according to the brood size, providing less food when the brood was reduced. Maternal resources had a large influence on offspring mass at dispersal, which is likely to affect their future fitness. The study shows the importance of the female's body mass and her resource allocation decisions for her reproductive outcome.  相似文献
