The rising and setting of the sun marks a transition between starkly contrasting environmental conditions for vegetative life.
Given these differing diurnal and nocturnal environmental factors and the inherent regularity of the transition between the
two, it is perhaps unsurprising that plants have developed an internal timing mechanism (known as a circadian clock) to allow
modulation of gene expression and metabolism in response to external cues. Entrainment of the circadian clock, primarily via
the detection of changes in light and temperature, maintains synchronization between the surrounding environment and the endogenous
clock mechanism. In this review, recent advances in our understanding of the molecular workings of the plant circadian clock
are discussed as are the input pathways necessary for entrainment of the clock machinery. 相似文献

The circadian clock is an important regulator of growth and development that has evolved to help organisms to anticipate the predictably occurring events on the planet, such as light–dark transitions, and adapt growth and development to these. This review looks back in history on how knowledge about the endogenous biological clock has been acquired over the centuries, with a focus on discoveries in plants. Key findings at the physiological, genetic and molecular level are described and the role of the circadian clock in important molecular processes is reviewed. 相似文献

Life occurs in an ever-changing environment. Some of the most striking and predictable changes are the daily rhythms of light and temperature. To cope with these rhythmic changes, plants use an endogenous circadian clock to adjust their growth and physiology to anticipate daily environmental changes. Most studies of circadian functions in plants have been performed under continuous conditions. However, in the natural environment, diurnal outputs result from complex interactions of endogenous circadian rhythms and external cues. Accumulated studies using the hypocotyl as a model for plant growth have shown that both light signalling and circadian clock mutants have growth defects, suggesting strong interactions between hypocotyl elongation, light signalling and the circadian clock. Here, we review evidence suggesting that light, plant hormones and the circadian clock all interact to control diurnal patterns of plant growth. 相似文献

The prokaryotes known as cyanobacteria possess an endogenous 24h biological (circadian) clock that provides temporal coordination for physiological processes. Although the cyanobacterial clock has the same fundamental properties as circadian clocks in eukaryotes, its components are non-homologous to those of animals, plants or fungi. Moreover, its mechanism is likely to be very different from that depicted in eukaryotic clock models. The picture that is emerging for the timing mechanism in cyanobacteria is of a multiprotein, multimeric, molecular machine composed of proteins whose domains exhibit twists on common themes. Signal transduction into and out of the clock core appears to occur via histidine protein kinase-based phosphorylation relays. 相似文献

The plant circadian clock is involved in the regulation of numerous processes. It serves as a timekeeper to ensure that the onset of key developmental events coincides with the appropriate conditions. Although internal oscillating clock mechanisms likely evolved in response to the earth's predictable day and night cycles, organisms must integrate a range of external and internal cues to adjust development and physiology. Here we introduce three different clock outputs to illustrate the complexity of clock control. Clock-regulated diurnal growth is altered by environmental stimuli. The complexity of the photoperiodic flowering pathway highlights numerous nodes through which plants may integrate information to modulate the timing of flowering. Comparative analyses among ecotypes that differ in flowering response reveal additional environmental cues and molecular processes that have developed to influence flowering. We also explore the process of cold acclimation, where circadian inputs, light quality, and stress responses converge to improve freezing tolerance in anticipation of colder temperatures. 相似文献

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been used as an experimental model organism for circadian rhythm research for more than 30 yr. Some of the physiological rhythms of this alga are well established, and several clock mutants have been isolated. The cloning of clock genes from these mutant strains by positional cloning is under way and should give new insights into the mechanism of the circadian clock. In a spectacular space experiment, the question of the existence of an endogenous clock vs. an exogenous mechanism has been studied in this organism. With the emergence of molecular analysis of circadian rhythms in plants in 1985, a circadian gene expression pattern of several nuclear and chloroplast genes was detected. Evidence is now accumulating that shows circadian control at the translational level. In addition, the gating of the cell cycle by the circadian clock has been analyzed. This review focuses on the different aspects of circadian rhythm research in C. reinhardtii over the past 30 yr. The suitability of Chlamydomonas as a model system in chronobiology research and the adaptive significance of the observed rhythms will be discussed. 相似文献

The Lemna genus is a group of monocotyledonous plants with tiny, floating bodies. Lemna gibba G3 and L. paucicostata 6746 were once intensively analyzed for physiological timing systems of photoperiodic flowering and circadian rhythms since they showed obligatory and sensitive photoperiodic responses of a long-day and a short-day plant, respectively. We attempted to approach the divergence of biological timing systems at the molecular level using these plants. We first employed molecular techniques to study their circadian clock systems. We developed a convenient bioluminescent reporter system to monitor the circadian rhythms of Lemna plants. As in Arabidopsis, the Arabidopsis CCA1 promoter produced circadian expression in Lemna plants, though the phases and the sustainability of bioluminescence rhythms were somewhat diverged between them. Lemna homologs of the Arabidopsis clock-related genes LHY/CCA1, GI, ELF3 and PRRs were then isolated as candidates for clock-related genes in these plants. These genes showed rhythmic expression profiles that were basically similar to those of Arabidopsis under light-dark conditions. Results from co-transfection assays using the bioluminescence reporter and overexpression effectors suggested that the LHY and GI homologs of Lemna can function in the circadian clock system like the counterparts of Arabidopsis. All these results suggested that the frame of the circadian clock appeared to be conserved not only between the two Lemna plants but also between monocotyledons and dicotyledons. However, divergence of gene numbers and expression profiles for LHY/CCA1 homologs were found between Lemna, rice and Arabidopsis, suggesting that some modification of clock-related components occurred through their evolution. 相似文献
