Relative finger lengths, especially the second-to-fourth finger length ratio, have been proposed as useful markers for prenatal testosterone action. This claim partly depends on an association of relative finger lengths in adults with related sex differences in children and infants. This paper reports the results of a study using serial radiographs to test for both sex differences in the fingers of infants and children and for a relationship between sex differences in the children and infant finger and adult finger length ratios. This is the first study using long-term serial data to evaluate the validity of finger length ratios as markers. We found not only that sex differences in finger length ratios arise prior to puberty, but that sex differences in the fingers of children are highly correlated with adult finger length ratios. Our results strongly encourage the further use of finger length ratios as markers of perinatal testosterone action.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Home-use HIV tests have the potential to increase testing and may be used by sex partners to inform sexual decision-making. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an individual diagnosed with HIV using a home-use test with a sex partner. CASE PRESENTATION: We are conducting a randomized controlled trial of home self-testing for HIV using the OraQuick ADVANCE[REGISTERED SIGN] HIV-1/2 Antibody Test on oral fluids. In 2011, a 27-year-old, homeless, Latino man who has sex with men not enrolled in the trial (the case) reported receiving a reactive result from a diverted study kit. When interviewed by study staff, the case reported that, 11 months prior, he had unprotected anal sex with a trial subject without discussing HIV status. Afterwards, the subject asked the case if he would like to test, performed the test, and disclosed the reactive result. The case reported altering his behavior to decrease the risk of HIV transmission to subsequent partners and sought care two months later. CONCLUSIONS: This case demonstrates that home-use HIV tests will be used by sex partners to learn and disclose HIV status and inform sexual decision-making. It also highlights concerns regarding the absence of counseling and the potential for delayed entry into HIV care. Additional research must be done to determine under what circumstances home-use tests can be used to increase awareness of HIV status, how they impact linkage to care among persons newly diagnosed with HIV, and whether they can be safely used to increase the accuracy of serosorting.  相似文献

Molecular markers have been used to identify the sex of sampled individuals for several decades, but the time‐consuming development phase prevented their application in many systems. Recently, a growing number of papers have applied reduced‐representation sequencing (RRS) protocols to the identification of sex‐specific markers without the use of test crosses or prior genomic information. While such an approach has great advantages in terms of versatility and ease of use, the “shotgun sequencing” nature of RRS data sets leads to a high amount of missing data, which results in statistical challenges to the confident assignment of sex to individuals. In this issue of Molecular Ecology Resources, Stovall et al. (Molecular Ecology Resources, 18, 2018) provide a statistical framework to answer two questions: (1) how many individuals of one sex only must possess a genotype for this locus to be considered significantly sex‐specific? and (2) How many sex‐specific loci must an individual of unknown sex possess (in a given data set) to be confidently assigned a sex? The statistical pipeline introduced, and applied to samples of New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) to identify 90 sex‐specific loci, should be broadly applicable to a large number of species and constitutes a nice addition to the molecular ecology toolkit in the genomics era.  相似文献

Abstract

Empirical research has revealed a positive relationship between number of sex partners and involvement in antisocial behaviors. Most attempts to explain this association have taken an evolutionary perspective and argued that the same traits (e.g., impulsiveness, shortsightedness, and aggressiveness) that are related to a large number of sex partners are also related to criminal involvement However, there is also reason to believe that the covariation between sex partners and crime behaviors can be partially explained by a common genetic pathway, where genes that are related to sex partners are also related to antisocial conduct. We test this possibility by using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Specifically, we examine whether variants of the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1) are associated with number of sexual partners and with adult criminal behavior. The results of our analyses reveal two broad findings. First, and in line with prior research, we find that there is a strong positive association between sex partners and antisocial behavior. Second, DAT1 explains variation in both number of sexual partners and in criminal conduct for males. We speak to the implications of our findings.  相似文献

We analyse nestling sex ratio variation in the Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola to test for predictions from sex allocation theory that the brood sex ratio is close to parity. We also tested Fiala's (1980) prediction that there is no difference in sex ratio between broods affected and not affected by mortality, and whether a shift in primary sex ratios or simple differential mortality by sex underlies that difference. Furthermore, we explore additional analytical possibilities for inferring proximate mechanisms through simulation modelling. In the Aquatic Warbler, which is promiscuous, the overall sex ratio determined by molecular sexing of nestlings at 8–11 days of age did not deviate significantly from parity (proportion of females 0.509), nor did we find any predictive effect of brood size, maternal body mass, fat condition, wing and bill length, laying date, mean daily temperature, and multiple-male mating. However, extensive simulation suggested that the whole pattern of sex ratio variation is unlikely to arise purely by chance: (1) there is a diverging sex ratio between complete and partial broods, (2) large broods tended to be female-biased and small broods male-biased, and (3) low ambient temperature prior to the laying period seemed to increase the proportion of female offspring in complete broods. We conclude that most variation in nestling sex ratio is non-adaptive in nature, and results from variation in female nestlings mortality dependent on brood size and sex ratio.  相似文献

In this paper, I answer the following question: suppose that two individuals, C and D, have been in a long‐term committed relationship, and D now has dementia, while C is competent; if D agrees to have sex with C, is it permissible for C to have sex with D? Ultimately, I defend the view that, under certain conditions, D can give valid consent to sex with C, rendering sex between them permissible. Specifically, I argue that there is compelling reason to endorse the Prior Consent Thesis, which states the following: D, when competent, can give valid prior consent to sex with her competent partner (C) that will take place after she has dementia, assuming that D is the same person as she was when she gave prior consent, meaning that, if D, when competent, gave prior consent to sex with C, then C may permissibly have sex with D. In Section 2, I explain both the background and the existing literature on this issue. In Section 3, I outline relevant stipulations about the kinds of cases I will be examining. In Section 4, I defend the Prior Consent Thesis. And, in Section 5, I address objections to the Prior Consent Thesis.  相似文献

Tawny Owls Strix aluco have been reported to skew the sex ratio of their offspring towards males when facing food shortage during the nestling period (and vice versa), because female fitness is more compromised by food shortage during development than male fitness. To test the generality of these results we used a DNA marker technique to determine the sex ratio in broods of Tawny Owls in Danish deciduous woodland during two years of ample food supply (rodent population outbreak) and two years of poor food supply. Of 268 nestlings, 59% were males (95% CI: 53–65%). This proportion was higher than previously reported for the species (49% in Northumberland, UK, and 52% in Hungary), but consistent with Fisherian sex allocation, which predicts a male bias of c . 57% based on inferred differences in energy requirements of male and female chicks. Contrary to previous results, brood sex ratios were not correlated with the resource abundance during the breeding seasons, despite considerable variation in breeding frequency, brood size or hatching date across years. Brood sex ratios were unaffected by brood reduction prior to DNA sampling, and nestling mortality rates after DNA sampling were not related to gender. The inconsistency between the sex ratio allocation patterns in our study and previous investigations suggests that adaptive sex allocation strategies differ across populations. These differences may relate to reproductive constraints in our population, where reproductive decisions seem primarily to concern whether to lay eggs at all, rather than adjust the sex ratio to differences in starvation risk of nestlings.  相似文献

Sexing of in vitro produced ovine embryos by duplex PCR   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The aim of this article was to develop a fast and easy duplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, for sex determination of ovine in vitro produced embryos prior to implantation. We tested the approach with 107 samples of autosomal cells (oviductal sheep cells and male lamb fibroblasts), divided into three groups for each sex according to the number of cells employed (30, 5, 2, respectively). We then used the test on 21 embryos at blastocyst stage. On the same day the embryos were transferred in pairs into 11 recipient synchronized ewes. The PCR utilized two different sets of primers: the first pair recognized a bovine Y-chromosome-specific sequence (SRY), that showed 100% homology with the corresponding sequence of the ovine Y-chromosome and is amplified in males only. The second pair recognized the bovine 1.715 satellite DNA (SAT) which was amplified in all ovine samples but, when submitted to the GenBank database did not show homology with any of the reported ovine sequences. However, after sequencing, ovine amplification product showed 98% homology with the bovine specific satellite sequence. The autosomal samples were amplified with 85.0% efficiency and 91.2% accuracy, while amplification was successful with all 21 embryos (100% efficiency). Eight lambs were born and the sex as determined by PCR corresponded to the anatomical sex in seven (87.5% accuracy). These results confirm that this method can be applied in ovine breeding programs to manipulate sex ratio of offspring.  相似文献

An ultrastructural study of the sex pheromone gland of female adult sugarcane borers suggests that pheromone is not produced during the first 2 hr after emergence but reaches a peak 48 hr after emergence. The sex pheromone gland is composed of two cell types and a number of structural changes observed to occur in the cells of the sex pheromone gland prior to pheromone production are described.  相似文献

The effect of sex hormones on orofacial pain modulation is poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of hormonal changes as a result of pregnancy, as well as that of the kappa (kappa) opioid receptor antagonist on female rats' sensitivity to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) formalin test. Initially, female rats at estrus and pregnant females on day 19 of pregnancy received a 50 microl formalin (1.5%) injection in the right TMJ. The pregnant females showed a reduction in nociceptive responses to the TMJ formalin test when compared with those at estrus. Then, the selective kappa-opioid receptor antagonist nor-Binaltorphimine (nor-BNI), was co-administered with the formalin. Next, additional groups received the kappa (200 microg) receptor antagonist or 0.9% NaCl 24 hours prior to the periarticular injection of formalin. Co-administration of nor-BNI with formalin into the TMJ region had no significant effect. The pre-injection of selective kappa-opioid receptor antagonist, nor-BNI, significantly enhanced the nociceptive behavioral responses in pregnant females. When applied in the contralateral TMJ, nor-BNI did not affect the magnitude of the nociceptive response induced by formalin. It can be concluded that: 1) The increase of the sex hormone levels, as result of pregnancy, induces a reduction of nociceptive behavioral responses to the TMJ formalin test; 2) the peripheral kappa opioid receptor activation, by endogenous opioid agonists release, is involved in the antinociception to TMJ formalin test, induced by pregnancy.  相似文献

We used a longitudinal design to test whether parental experience differentially affects the development of prolactin responses to infant cues in men and women. Couples provided two blood samples at three tests, one test just before their babies were born, and two tests during the early postnatal period (n=21). Nine couples repeated the tests near the birth of their second babies. In the 30 min between the two samples, couples listened to recorded infant cries at the prenatal test and held their baby (fathers) or a doll (mothers) at the postnatal tests. Blood samples were analyzed for prolactin concentrations. Prolactin values were then related to sex and parity differences as well as to questionnaire data concerning emotional responses to infant cries and previous infant contact. We found that (1) prior to the birth of both the first and second babies, women's prolactin concentrations increased after exposure to infant stimuli, whereas men's prolactin concentrations decreased; postnatal sex differences varied with parity; (2) women's prolactin reactivity did not change significantly with parental experience; (3) the same men's prolactin concentrations decreased after holding their first newborns but increased after holding their second newborns; this change was not gradual or permanent; (4) men reporting concern after hearing recorded infant cries showed a different postnatal pattern of prolactin change after holding their babies than men not reporting concern; and (5) men who had little contact with their babies just prior to testing had a more positive prolactin response than men who had recently held their babies for longer periods. Although parental experience appears to affect men's prolactin responses, differences in reactivity were also related to patterns of recent infant contact and individual differences in responses to infant cues.  相似文献

Effects of gonadal steroids on conspecific odor preference for either (1) sexually active male or active female, (2) sexually active or gonadectomized (gdx) males, (3) sexually active or gdx females, and (4) gdx males or gdx females were determined in male and female rats in a three-chamber apparatus. For the first test, gdx females were made sexually active by treatments with estradiol benzoate (EB) and progesterone (P), and sexually active males were selected by prior screening. Sexually active males and females preferred opposite-sex odor over same-sex odor. Odor of sexually active opposite-sex conspecifics was preferred over that of inactive ones. Immediately after the completion of the first test, sexually active males were gdx and females were left without hormonal treatment. Second and third tests were carried out 2 and 5 weeks after the first test. In the second test, gdx males preferred odor of sexually active males rather than that of receptive females (male-directed preference); in the third test, both males and females showed no preference when tested with four stimulus pairs. The final tests were carried out in gdx males with EB and P, and gdx females with 2-week exposure to testosterone (T). Males with EB and P showed a male-directed preference again, whereas T-treated females kept their own female preference. Injection of EB alone to gdx males did not induce any preference. The present study clearly demonstrated sex difference in conspecific odor preference. Although both male and female preferences depend on their circulating sex steroids, the direction of male preference is more susceptible to their hormonal states, compared to that of females.  相似文献

The alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys temminckii, exhibits type II temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), wherein females are produced at high and low incubation temperatures. This TSD pattern is well studied at constant temperatures, but little work has focused on sex ratios in natural nests that experience daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations. We monitored nesting activity of reintroduced Macrochelys temminckii at Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge in 2010–2011. Nests located prior to predation were excavated to determine clutch size and the eggs were reburied with a temperature data logger to collect nest temperatures. Overall, 24% of nests were protected with wire mesh prior to predation, and the average clutch size in intact nests was 22.4 eggs. Nest predation rates in the study population will likely approach 100% if nest protection efforts do not continue. Temperature profiles were used to compare estimated sex ratios using two methods—mean nest temperature during middle third of incubation and the degree-day model—to actual sex ratios in naturally incubated Macrochelys temminckii nests. The sex ratio in all 2010 recruits was female-biased (91.8% female); 2011 nests did not produce any hatchlings, likely the result of severe drought. The predicted sex ratios based on mean nest temperature and the degree-day model matched actual sex ratios in the warmer nests (0% male), but the degree-day model estimate proved more accurate in the cooler nest. A strongly skewed population sex ratio could become a threat to this reintroduced population if the strongly female-biased sex ratio in 2010 reflects a long-term trend.  相似文献

We tested the role of sex chromosome complement and gonadal hormones in sex differences in several different paradigms measuring nociception and opioid analgesia using "four core genotypes" C57BL/6J mice. The genotypes include XX and XY gonadal males, and XX and XY gonadal females. Adult mice were gonadectomized and tested 3-4 weeks later, so that differences between sexes (mice with testes vs. ovaries) were attributable mainly to organizational effects of gonadal hormones, whereas differences between XX and XY mice were attributable to their complement of sex chromosomes. In Experiment 1 (hotplate test of acute morphine analgesia), XX mice of both gonadal sexes had significantly shorter hotplate baseline latencies prior to morphine than XY mice. In Experiment 2 (test of development of tolerance to morphine), mice were injected twice daily with 10 mg/kg morphine or saline for 6 days. Saline or the competitive NMDA antagonist CPP (3-(2-carboxypiperazin-4yl) propyl-1-phosphonic acid) (10 mg/kg) was co-injected. On day 7, mice were tested for hotplate latencies before and after administration of a challenge dose of morphine (10 mg/kg). XX mice showed shorter hotplate latencies than XY mice at baseline, and the XX-XY difference was greater following morphine. In Experiment 3, mice were injected with morphine (10 mg/kg) or saline, 15 min before intraplantar injection of formalin (5%/25 microl). XX mice licked their hindpaw more than XY mice within 5 min of formalin injection. The results indicate that X- or Y-linked genes have direct effects, not mediated by gonadal secretions, on sex differences in two different types of acute nociception.  相似文献

To determine HIV prevalence and associated risk factors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. We conducted a cross-sectional RDS survey of MSM in Abidjan from October 2011 to February 2012. Eligibility criteria included age ≥ 18 years and having had oral or anal sex with another man in the last 12 months. Weighted data analysis was conducted with RDSAT and SAS. We enrolled 603 participants, of whom 601 (99.7%) completed the questionnaire and 581 (96.7%) consented to HIV testing. HIV population prevalence was estimated as 18.0% (95% CI: 13.0-23.1); 86.4% (95% CI: 75.1-94.9) of HIV-positive MSM were unaware of their serostatus. In multivariable analysis, adjusting for age, education, and income, HIV infection was associated with unprotected sex at last sex with a woman, more than two male anal sex partners in last 12 months, inconsistent condom use during anal sex with a man, self-perceived risk of HIV, history of forced sex, history of physical abuse due to MSM status, and not receiving last HIV test result prior to study. HIV prevalence among MSM in Abidjan is more than four times as high as that of general population men. MSM engage in high-risk sexual behavior and most HIV-positive MSM are unaware of their serostatus. Greater access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment services targeted to MSM is necessary.  相似文献

Social, locomotor, and object play were studied in a colony of five male and five female peer-reared spotted hyenas during 12 1-hr tests while the animals were 13-19 months of age. Animals were tested in both same-sex and mixed-sex groups and were stimulated to play by the introduction of fresh straw and sawdust bedding. Each test was videotaped and the frequency of each type of play was determined by a time sampling procedure. Females played more frequently than males, however, the category of play which was elevated depended upon the social context during testing. In same-sex tests the frequency of vigorous social play displayed by females markedly exceeded that by males, but no comparable sex difference appeared in mixed-sex tests. Females engaged in locomotor play more frequently than males in mixed-sex tests, but no comparable sex difference appeared in same-sex tests. No sex difference in object play was observed. Two male and two female hyenas were gonadectomized prior to the initiation of the present sequence of tests. The results suggest that gonadectomy during the prepubertal period does not affect the frequency of play behavior. However, the small sample sizes preclude any conclusive determination of the effects of these gonadectomies on play.  相似文献

This study examined three aspects of protogynous sex change in Lythrypnus dalli (Gobiidae): (1) social influences on the rate of sex change, (2) the sequence of behavioural changes, and (3) neuroendocrine changes. Social groups consisted of either four females, or four females with a male who was subsequently removed. Sex change occurred most rapidly in male- removed groups when the sex changer was larger than other females. Sex changers in female only groups and sex changers not larger than other females in male-removed groups changed sex at similar rates. These differences may be explained by two factors that affect dominance: prior knowledge of the social group and greater size. Sex changers were dominant to other females prior to male removal, and larger sex changers increased displacement rates three-fold immediately after male removal. Sex changers in the other groups did not show this increase in displacements. This early establishment of dominance accounts for the overall difference in the rate of sex change. Prior to spawning, however, all sex changers increased displacements and performed male-typical displays. Arginine vasotocin-immunoreactive forebrain cells of sex changers were similar in size to field-collected males, and larger than field-collected females. Previously nesting males also changed sex in male-only groups, but at slow rates. These data are combined with those of existing studies to generate an integrative model of sex change in this goby. Male rats were injected with methadone HCl (METH) at 5 mg/kg s.c. for 4 days prior to mating with drug-free females. Offspring resulting from these matings were compared with offspring of drug-free males. The progeny of METH-treated males gained less weight after weaning and had lighter thymuses as adults (but not in infancy). Gonadal weights did not differ in infancy or adulthood, and adrenal weights were heavier in female offspring in adulthood. In adulthood METH offspring were significantly different from controls on all behavioural tests used (open field activity, activity cage activity, passive avoidance latencies, shuttle box avoidances, and rotarod latencies), with the differences frequently affected by test order, days of testing, or sex of offspring. The effects in progeny of METH-treated males in the absence of differences in litter size or neonatal mortality indicate that paternal drug ingestion prior to mating can produce physiological and behavioural changes in progeny that are not dependent on detectable effects on early viability or growth.  相似文献

All current standardized methods of age determination using the os pubis were tested by blind assessment of a skeletal sample with documented ages (from the Todd collection; N = 96). No demographic data (sex, age, race, age composition) were known to the assessors prior to completion of the test. Results showed the Todd method to be more reliable than more recent component techniques and that all systems tended to underage. Therefore, modifications were made of the Todd system to eliminate this and other deficiencies, and a second test using a new sample was conducted (N = 109). The age distribution determined by the revised Todd method did not significantly differ from the actual age distribution of the second sample. Error due to race was nonsignificant. Biological stages of pubic metamorphosis are described and possible evolutionary specializations of the hominid symphysis are discussed. Revised standards for age determination are presented.  相似文献
