A herd of 28–33 Japanese Black cows (Bos taurus) were allowed to graze on an experimental plot comprising monoculture swards of centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) (0.39 and 0.61 ha, respectively) for 3–5 days each month (from 0850 to 1600 hours) between May (late spring) and October (mid-autumn). On a monthly basis, the animals showed an increasing trend to select centipedegrass in preference to bahiagrass as the relative crude protein (CP) concentration of the former increased relative to the latter. On a daily basis, the animals showed a decreased selectivity for centipedegrass with the progression of grazing days, as centipedegrass sward lost both quantity and quality faster than bahiagrass sward under higher degrees of defoliation. Animals maintained similar bite rates on the two swards by modifying feeding station behavior as soon as they switched between the swards, i.e., they increased the number of bites per feeding station and decreased the number of feeding stations selected per unit grazing time soon after switching to centipedegrass, with the reverse process occurring soon after the switch to bahiagrass. The results show CP concentration to be a partial forage factor influencing animals’ choice between tropical grasses growing as patches. The results also demonstrate that animals have an ability to adapt their foraging behavior flexibly and rapidly to varying types of vegetation.  相似文献

Problems with parasitic infections are common in zoological gardens and circuses. In some animals it can lead to several disorders such as systemic disease, reproductive disorders (abortions and neonatal mortality), and even to death if severe illness is untreated. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of three common parasites in 74 animals from three zoos, and four circuses in Southern Italy. Antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, and Encephalitozoon cuniculi were detected in 51%, 12%, and 20% of animals, respectively. Co‐infections of T. gondii and N. caninum were reported in seven animals (9%) and co‐infection of T. gondii and E. cuniculi in one animal. T. gondii, N. caninum and E. cuniculi seroprevalence differed in type of diet (P ≤ 0.0001; P ≤ 0.037 and P ≤ 0.004, respectively). T. gondii and E. cuniculi seroprevalence also differed in animal families (P ≤ 0.0001) and according to type of housing (P ≤ 0.003), respectively. Statistical differences were not found in other characteristics (gender, age, country of birth, origin, and contact with cats or dogs). This is the first serological study focusing on protozoan and microsporidian parasites in zoo and circus animals from Southern Italy and the first detection of antibodies to E. cuniculi in camels in Europe.  相似文献

Organismal performance changes over ontogeny as the musculoskeletal systems underlying animal behavior grow in relative size and shape. As performance is a determinant of feeding ecology, ontogenetic changes in the former can influence the latter. The horn shark Heterodontus francisci consumes hard-shelled benthic invertebrates, which may be problematic for younger animals with lower performance capacities. Scaling of feeding biomechanics was investigated in H. francisci (n=16, 19–59 cm standard length (SL)) to determine the biomechanical basis of allometric changes in feeding performance and whether this performance capacity constrains hard-prey consumption over ontogeny. Positive allometry of anterior (8–163 N) and posterior (15–382 N) theoretical bite force was attributed to positive allometry of cross-sectional area in two jaw adducting muscles and mechanical advantage at the posterior bite point (0.79–1.26). Mechanical advantage for anterior biting scaled isometrically (0.52). Fracture forces for purple sea urchins Strongylocentrotus purpuratus consumed by H. francisci ranged from 24 to 430 N. Comparison of these fracture forces to the bite force of H. francisci suggests that H. francisci is unable to consume hard prey early in its life history, but can consume the majority of S. purpuratus by the time it reaches maximum size. Despite this constraint, positive allometry of biting performance appears to facilitate an earlier entry into the durophagous niche than would an isometric ontogenetic trajectory. The posterior gape of H. francisci is significantly smaller than the urchins capable of being crushed by its posterior bite force. Thus, the high posterior bite forces of H. francisci cannot be fully utilized while consuming prey of similar toughness and size to S. purpuratus, and its potential trophic niche is primarily determined by anterior biting capacity.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out using a trade-off framework to determine the rules of sward selection, in relation to gastrointestinal parasite dispersion, used by mammalian herbivores, and the effect of level of feeding motivation and parasitic status on these rules. Twenty-four sheep divided into four animal treatment groups resulting from two levels of feeding motivation (high and moderate) and two parasitic states (parasitised with Ostertagia circumcincta and non-parasitised) were presented with pairs of experimental swards which varied in N content (high and low), sward height (tall and short) and level of contamination with faeces and thus parasites (contaminated and non-contaminated). The selection for tall swards outweighed both the selection for N-rich swards and the avoidance of faecal contaminated swards. The selection for N-rich swards could not completely overcome faecal avoidance. Parasitism in animals with a moderate feeding motivation reduced their bite rates and grazing depths, thereby probably reducing the rate of ingestion of parasitic larvae. In contrast, highly feeding-motivated animals (including those parasitised) increased their bite rates and grazing depths, thereby increasing the rate of ingestion of parasites. The inclusion of parasite distributions, both in the environment and within herbivore host populations, is likely to advance optimal foraging theory by enhancing its predictive power. Antimicrobial resistance is a global emergency which needs one health approach to address. The present study was conducted to detect the prevalence of beta-lactamase and biofilm-producing Klebsiella strains in rectal swabs (n = 624) collected from healthy dogs, cats, sheep and goats reared as companion or household animals in India. The dogs and cats were frequently exposed to third- or fourth-generation cephalosporins for therapy. The sheep and goats were occasionally exposed to antibiotics and had environmental exposure. Phenotypical ESBL (n = 93) and ACBL (n = 88)-producing Klebsiella were isolated significantly more (P < 0·05) from companion animals than household animals. Majority of the Klebsiella possessed blaCTX-M-15. The sequences blaCTX-M-15.2, blaCTX-M-197 and blaCTX-M-225 are reported first time from the companion animals. All ACBL-producing isolates possessed blaAmpC. The present study detected 65·8% of Klebsiella strains as biofilm producers possessing the studied biofilm associated genes. The isolates showed phenotypical resistance against chloramphenicol, tetracycline, doxycycline, co-trimoxazole, ampicillin, cefotaxime/clavulanic acid. The present study showed that companion and household animals (dogs, cats, sheep, goats) may act as a carrier of ESBL/biofilm-producing, multi-drug resistant, high-risk clonal lineage of Klebsiella.  相似文献

Butyrophilin (BTN1A1) and milk fat globule epidermal growth factor (EGF) 8 (MFG-E8) genes are both milk fat globule membrane proteins. BTN1A1 plays a key role in the secretion of milk lipid and production which has effects on performance traits, while the MFG-E8 is vital for the development of the mammary gland and phagocytic clearance of apoptotic cells. Therefore, BTN1A1 and MFG-E8 gene are candidate genes for quantitative traits in mammalian animals with respect to milk performance traits. The objective of this study is to investigate variations in goat BTN1A1 and MFG-E8 gene and analyze their associations with growth trait and milk performance. In this study, the goat BTN1A1 gene showed a novel single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP): XM_001494179:g.8659C>T, resulting in a missense mutation: CTT (Leu)>TTT (Phe) at position 377 aa of the BTN1A1 (526 aa); the goat MFG-E8 gene showed four novel SNPs: NC_007319: g.843delA, 6417delC, 14892T>C and 14996A>C, only the 14892T>C result in a synonymous mutation. The associations between genotypes and production traits were analyzed. Significant statistical results implied that HinfI locus of BTN1A1 gene is associated with milk fat yield (P = 0.004), total solid (P = 0.002), solid-non fat (P = 0.018) and first milk yield (P = 0.030). The DA and EcoRV loci of MFG-E8 gene are associated with milk fat yield (DA locus: P = 0.000; EcoRV locus: P = 0.033) and total solid (DA locus: P = 0.002; EcoRV locus: P = 0.015) in the Xinong Saanen dairy goat.  相似文献

Understanding the functional response of species is important in comprehending the species’ population dynamics and the functioning of multi-species assemblages. A Type II functional response, where instantaneous intake rate increases asymptotically with sward biomass, is thought to be common in grazers. However, at tall, dense swards, food intake might decline due to mechanical limitations or if animals selectively forage on the most nutritious parts of a sward, leading to a Type IV functional response, especially for smaller herbivores. We tested the predictions that bite mass, cropping time, swallowing time and searching time increase, and bite rate decreases with increasing grass biomass for different-sized Canada geese (Branta canadensis) foraging on grass swards. Bite mass indeed showed an increasing asymptotic relationship with grass biomass. At high biomass, difficulties in handling long leaves and in locating bites were responsible for increasing cropping, swallowing, and searching times. Constant bite mass and decreasing bite rate caused the intake rate to decrease at high sward biomass after reaching an optimum, leading to a Type IV functional response. Grazer body mass affected maximum bite mass and intake rate, but did not change the shape of the functional response. As grass nutrient contents are usually highest in short swards, this Type IV functional response in geese leads to an intake rate that is maximised in these swards. The lower grass biomass at which intake rate was maximised allows resource partitioning between different-sized grazers. We argue that this Type IV functional response is of more importance than previously thought.  相似文献

The study was conducted to quantify the concordance of antibiotic resistance and ERIC-PCR DNA fingerprint pattern in Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from farmers and their broilers of 95 broiler farms in Songkhla province, Thailand. Four hundred and fifty-seven and 460 E. coli isolates from both groups produced 35 patterns of antibiotics resistance. Mono-resistance to doxycycline (23.2%) in isolates from farmers and multiple resistance to doxycycline, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin (17.8%) were the most common finding in broilers. Twenty-seven farms had 44 within-farm concordant patterns of resistance. From simulation, the frequency of concordance was significantly higher than concordance by chance alone (P < 0.05). Out of these 44 matched sets, only four had the same DNA fingerprint pattern. Concordance by DNA pattern was also not associated with phenotypic resistance. Clonal spread is therefore not a good explanation of the concordance in this population. Other mechanisms need further analysis.  相似文献

Aims

We investigated the legacy effects of a previous ley’s legume proportion on the performance of a following grass crop in a rotation.

Methods

In April 2015, a pure Lolium multiflorum L. crop was sown after the removal of legume containing swards (0–100% legumes), and was harvested four times over the following one-year period (3 times in 2015 and once the following April 2016). Labeled 15N fertilizer (50 kg N ha−1) was applied during the 2nd and 3rd re-growth periods to determine N fluxes.

Results

Across the one-year period, a significant legume-legacy induced increase in biomass yield of L. multiflorum was observed over the entire range of previous legume proportions when compared against the non-legume ley, the effect being 2.15 and 1.73 t ha−1 (P ≤ 0.001 each) in swards with 50% and 100% previous legume proportion, respectively, or up to +31%. The legume-legacy effect on biomass yield was most pronounced at the 1st harvest (June) and persisted into the 2nd harvest in August (P ≤ 0.05 both, over the entire range of previous legume proportion), though was no longer evident at the 3rd harvest (September). Importantly, the legume-legacy effect returned in the 4th harvest in April (P ≤ 0.05). Examining the source of N contributing to N yield confirmed that more N was derived from the soil at harvest 1 and 2 for previous legume containing leys (P ≤ 0.001) compared to those which contained no legumes, with a significant increase still seen for legume mixtures at harvest 3 (P ≤ 0.01).

Conclusions

The results demonstrate a sustained soil-transferred performance-enhancing legacy effect on a following crop in a rotation, with previous legume proportions of 50% having a comparable effect compared with that of a previous legume monoculture.

The effects of enterocin (Ent) M and sage extract applied separately and in combination were investigated. EntM (E 50 μL/animal/day in water) and sage extract (S 10 μL/animal/day in water) were applied individually and in combination (E+S) to rabbits during 21 days of treatment. The rabbits’ growth was not significantly influenced by the additives. Lower feed conversion (FC) was noted in the experimental groups compared with controls, with the lowest data detected in E. The antimicrobial activity of EntM was noted (in E+S: lactic acid bacteria—P < 0.01; in E, E+S: enterococci, enterobacteria—P > 0.05; in E: clostridia—P > 0.05). The most significant changes in fermentation between weaned and older rabbits were noted in amylolytic activity at day 21 (E P < 0.05; E + S P < 0.05); prolonged reduction effect of sage extract on amylolytic activity was observed. The activity of cellulase, pectinase and xylanase was higher in older than in younger animals. Decrease in lactic acid and volatile fatty acids was noted during EntM administration, with significant effect on propionic acid concentration (E P < 0.05; E+S P < 0.001). The sage extract reduced propionic acid (S P < 0.001) and butyric acid levels (S P < 0.05) and increased the concentrations of butyric, iso-valeric, valeric, caproic acids and lactic acid (P < 0.001). It seems to be that EntM and sage supplementation may improve the economy of rabbit farms (increased FC) and the health status of rabbits (reduction of spoilage microbiota, enhanced enzymatic activities in caecum).

Breast carcinoma (BC) is a prevalent malignant tumour occurring in women. Many studies have indicated the role of human papilloma virus type 16 (HPV16) in the pathogenesis of BC; however, the correlations of HPV16 infection with the clinicopathologic features of BC and the expressions of c-erbB-2 and bcl-2 have not yet been elucidated. In this study, HPV16 was detected by amplifying the HPV16 E6 gene by the polymerase chain reaction method, and the expressions of c-erbB-2 and bcl-2 in 40 BCs and 20 normal breast tissue samples, obtained from Shaanxi Province, were examined using the streptavidin-peroxidase method with monoclonal antibodies specific to c-erbB-2 and bcl-2. The infection rate of HPV16 E6 and the positive expression rate of c-erbB-2 were significantly higher in the BCs than in the normal tissues (HPV16 E6: 60% vs. 5%; c-erbB-2: 42.5% vs. 5%, P < 0.05). However, the positive expression rate of bcl-2 was significantly lower in the BCs than in the normal tissues (67.5% vs. 95%, P < 0.05). The infection rate of HPV16 did not correlate with any of the pathological features observed (P > 0.05). HPV16 infection correlated with bcl-2 expression (P = 0.015) but not with c-erbB-2 expression (P = 0.747) in the BCs. Interestingly, HPV16 infection correlated with bcl-2 expression in grade I BCs (P = 0.018) but not in grade II–III BCs (P = 0.633). Our data suggest that HPV16 infection is correlated with bcl-2 expression in BCs.  相似文献

The ability to transport water through tall stems hydraulically limits stomatal conductance (gs), thereby constraining photosynthesis and growth. However, some plants are able to minimize this height‐related decrease in gs, regardless of path length. We hypothesized that kudzu (Pueraria lobata) prevents strong declines in gs with height through appreciable structural and hydraulic compensative alterations. We observed only a 12% decline in maximum gs along 15‐m‐long stems and were able to model this empirical trend. Increasing resistance with transport distance was not compensated by increasing sapwood‐to‐leaf‐area ratio. Compensating for increasing leaf area by adjusting the driving force would require water potential reaching ?1.9 MPa, far below the wilting point (?1.2 MPa). The negative effect of stem length was compensated for by decreasing petiole hydraulic resistance and by increasing stem sapwood area and water storage, with capacitive discharge representing 8–12% of the water flux. In addition, large lateral (petiole, leaves) relative to axial hydraulic resistance helped improve water flow distribution to top leaves. These results indicate that gs of distal leaves can be similar to that of basal leaves, provided that resistance is highest in petioles, and sufficient amounts of water storage can be used to subsidize the transpiration stream.  相似文献

The levels of selected neuroregulatory proteins that inhibit or promote apoptotic cell death were measured in the striatum of piglets subjected to precisely controlled 1 h hypoxic insult followed by 0, 2 and 4 h recovery and compared to sham operated animals. The anti-apoptotic proteins: there were increases in Survivin at 0 (157%, P = 0.031) and 4 h (171%, P = 0.033), in Bcl-XL at 0 (138%, P = 0.028) and 4 h (143%, P = 0.007), in VEGF at 4 h (185%, P = 0.019) and Hsp27 at 2 h (144%, P = 0.05) and 4 h (143%, P = 0.05). The pro-apoptotic proteins: caspases-1 and 7 increased at 4 h (135%, P = 0.05) and (129%, P = 0.038), respectively. Bim increased after 4 h (115%, P = 0.028), Apoptosis Inducing Factor after 2 h (127%, P = 0.048) and Calpain after 4 h (143% of control, P = 0.04). Hypoxia causes increase in levels of both anti- and pro-apoptotic proteins. Their relative activity determines the outcome in terms of cell damage and neuronal deficit.  相似文献

Capybaras are rodent widely distributed in South America, which inhabit lakeside areas including ecological parks and urban sites. Due to anthropological interaction, monitoring zoonotic pathogens in wildlife is essential for One Health. We investigated faecal samples from capybaras living in an urban area in Rio Branco (Acre, Brazil) for the presence diarrhoeagenic E. coli. Virulence factors from shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) were screened by PCR. We detected at least one virulence factor in 81% of the animals, being classified as STEC and EHEC pathotypes. The presence of zoonotic E. coli in capybaras is a warning due to the highly frequent anthropological interactions with wild animals in this area. Our findings highlight the importance of investigating wild animals as carriers of zoonotic E. coli, requiring further investigations into wildlife surveillance and epidemiological monitoring.  相似文献

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is one of the most common viruses infecting humans and animals. Cellular adhesion is increased in HSV and plays a role in pathogenesis of inflammatory response during this viral infection. In our study, we studied a potential role of glycyrrhizin in disrupting cellular adhesion in HSV. We isolated rat cerebral capillary vessel endothelial cells (CCECs) and polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and evaluated intercellular adhesion between these cells by micropipette aspiration technique. The adhesion force and stress between CCEC and PMN were significantly (P < 0.01) increased in HSV infection. Glycyrrhizin perfusion significantly (P < 0.01) reduced adhesion force and stress between CCEC and PMN. In conclusion, glycyrrhizin may attenuate inflammatory responses in HSV by inhibition of adhesion between CCEC and PMN.  相似文献

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars varied in their resistance to different populations of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, called HG Types. The rhg1 locus on linkage group G was necessary for resistance to all HG types. However, the loci for resistance to H. glycines HG Type 1.3- (race 14) and HG Type 1.2.5- (race 2) of the soybean cyst nematode have varied in their reported locations. The aims were to compare the inheritance of resistance to three nematode HG Types in a population segregating for resistance to SCN and to identify the underlying quantitative trait loci (QTL). ‘Hartwig’, a soybean cultivar resistant to most SCN HG Types, was crossed with the susceptible cultivar ‘Flyer’. A total of 92 F5-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs; or inbred lines) and 144 molecular markers were used for map development. The rhg1 associated QTL found in earlier studies were confirmed and shown to underlie resistance to all three HG Types in RILs (Satt309; HG Type 0, P = 0.0001 R 2 = 22%; Satt275; HG Type 1.3, P = 0.001, R 2 = 14%) and near isogeneic lines (NILs; or iso-lines; Satt309; HG Type 1.2.5-, P = 0.001 R 2 = 24%). A new QTL underlying resistance to HG Type 1.2.5- was detected on LG D2 (Satt574; P = 0.001, R 2 = 11%) among 14 RILs resistant to the other HG types. The locus was confirmed in a small NIL population consisting of 60 plants of ten genotypes (P = 0.04). This QTL (cqSCN-005) is located in an interval previously associated with resistance to both SDS leaf scorch from ‘Pyramid’ and ‘Ripley’ (cqSDS-001) and SCN HG Type 1.3- from Hartwig and Pyramid. The QTL detected will allow marker assisted selection for multigenic resistance to complex nematode populations in combination with sudden death syndrome resistance (SDS) and other agronomic traits.  相似文献

A mutant strain of Pyropia yezoensis, strain E, was isolated from the free‐living conchocelis of a pure strain (NA) treated with ethyl methane sulfonate. The incremental quantities of young strain E blades were higher than those of NA after 14 d of cultivation, indicating that young blades of mutant strain E released more archeospores. The mean length and weight of large E blades were both over three times greater than those of NA after 4 weeks of cultivation. The photosynthetic parameters (Fv/Fm, Y[I], Y[II], and O2 evolution rate) and pigment contents (including phycoerythrin and phycocyanin) of strain E blades were higher than those of NA (P < 0.05). The cellular respiratory rate of strain E blades was lower than that of NA (P < 0.05). In order to investigate the causes of changes in strain E blades, total RNA in strain E and NA blades were sequenced using the Illumina Hiseq platform. Compared with NA, 1,549 unigenes were selected in strain E including 657 up‐regulated and 892 down‐regulated genes. According to the physiology measurement and differentially expressed genes analysis, cell respiration in strain E might decrease, whereas anabolic‐like photosynthesis and protein biosynthesis might increase compared with NA. This means substance accumulation might be greater than decomposition in strain E. This might explain why strain E blades showed improved growth compared with NA. In addition, several genes related to stress resistance were up‐regulated in strain E indicating that strain E might have a higher stress resistance. The sequencing dataset may be conducive to Pyropia yezoensis molecular breeding research.  相似文献

Blanco R.E., Rinderknecht, A. & Lecuona, G. 2011: The bite force of the largest fossil rodent (Hystricognathi, Caviomorpha, Dinomyidae). Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 157–163. An exceptionally well‐preserved skull of the largest fossil rodent Josephoartigasia monesi allows the first analysis of the bite mechanics of this group of South American giant rodents. In this study, we reconstructed the main anatomical features of the skull of this Pliocene rodent, relating them to the bite force at incisors. Bite force was estimated using three different techniques. Two methods suggest that bite forces at incisors of around 1000 N were possible for these mammals. However, the incisors seem to be stronger than expected for this bite force implying that the bite forces may have been greater than 3000 N. We consider three hypotheses: allometric effects, teeth digging or defence against predators, to explain our results. □Bite force, Dinomyidae, incisors, largest rodent, Pliocene.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis thatage-associated decline in muscle function is related to a change inmyosin ATPase activity. Single, glycerinated semimembranosus fibersfrom young (8-12 mo) and aged (32-37 mo) Fischer 344 × Brown Norway male rats were analyzed simultaneously for force andmyosin ATPase activity over a range of Ca2+ concentrations.Maximal force generation was ~20% lower in fibers from aged animals(P = 0.02), but myosin ATPase activity was not different between fibers from young and aged rats: 686 ± 46 (n = 30) and 697 ± 46 µM/s (n = 33) (P = 0.89). The apparent rate constant for thedissociation of strong-binding myosin from actin was calculated to be~30% greater in fibers from aged animals (P = 0.03),indicating that the lower force produced by fibers from aged animals isdue to a greater flux of myosin heads from the strong-binding state tothe weak-binding state during contraction. This is in agreement withour previous electron paramagnetic resonance experiments that showed areduced fraction of myosin heads in the strong-binding state during amaximal isometric contraction in fibers from older rats.

A herd of 28–31 Japanese Black (Bos taurus) cows were allowed to graze an experimental plot comprising monoculture swards of centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides; CG; preferred grass; 0.30 ha) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum; BG; less preferred grass; 0.22 ha) for five consecutive days (09:00–16:00 h) in two seasons (summer and autumn), under a substantial travel cost between the two grasses and a trade-off between the forage preference and some abiotic factors. The two swards were apart from each other and connected by an alley of about 80 m. The CG comprised low (CGL) and high (CGH) availability areas (0.15 ha each). The animals grazed mainly the CGH and CGL, which were in the distance and lacked water and shade, in the morning when the air temperature was relatively low. Then, in the afternoon, they shifted the major grazing area to the BG with water, shade, and close proximity to the barn where they camped. On a daily basis, the animals consistently showed preference for the CGH except one case, switching 6–14 times between the BG and CG. The results demonstrate that animals, even when the preferred species is of lower accessibility and in a less favorable abiotic environment, switch between the preferred and less preferred species and eat mixed diets to show a partial preference. They cope with increased travel costs and trade-offs between forage preference and abiotic environment by reducing switching frequency between the species and shifting target species over the course of the day. Further studies are warranted to test how these mechanisms are successful in maintaining the preference under increased distances and trade-offs.  相似文献
